After all you put me through You'd think I'd despise you But in the end I wanna thank you 'cause you made that much stronger
Well I thought I knew you, thinkin' that you were true Guess I, I couldn't trust called your bluff time is up 'Cause I've had enough You were there by my side, always down for the ride But your joy ride just came down in flames 'Cause your greed sold me out in shame, mhm
After all of the stealing and cheating you probably think that I hold resentment for you But uh uh, oh no, you're wrong 'Cause if it wasn't for all that you tried to do, I wouldn't know Just how capable I am to pull through So I wanna say thank you 'Cause it
Chorus: Makes me that much stronger Makes me work a little bit harder It makes me that much wiser So thanks for making me a fighter Made me learn a little bit faster Made my skin a little bit thicker Makes me that much smarter So thanks for making me a fighter
Never saw it coming, all of your backstabbing Just so you could cash in on a good thing before I'd realize your game I heard you're goin' round playin', the victim now But don't even begin feeling I'm the one to blame 'Cause you dug your own grave After all of the fights and the lies 'cause you're wanting to haunt me But that won't work anymore, no more, no no It's over 'Cause if it wasn't for all of your torture I wouldn't know how to be this way now and never back down So I wanna say thank you 'Cause it
How could this man I thought I knew Turn out to be unjust so cruel Could only see the good in you Pretended to not to see the truth You tried to hide your lies, disguise yourself Through living in denial But in the end you'll see YOU-WON'T-STOP-ME
I am a fighter and I I ain't goin' stop There is no turning back I've had enough
Thought I would forget, thought I I remember Cause I remember I remember ......x2
Chorus....

Try to be best ‘Cause you’re only a man And a man’s gotta learn to take it
Try to believe Though the going gets rough That you gotta hang tough to make it
History repeats itself Try and you’ll succeed
Never doubt that you’re the one And you can have your dreams!
You’re the best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down You’re the Best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down You’re the Best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ow-own
Fight ‘til the end Cause your life will depend On the strength that you have inside you
Ah you gotta be proud starin’ out in the cloud When the odds in the game defy you
Try your best to win them all and one day time will tell when you’re the one that’s standing there you’ll reach the final bell!
You’re the best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down You’re the Best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down You’re the Best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you dow-ow-ow-ho-how-ho-own
INSPIRING GUITAR SOLO
Fight ‘til you drop never stop can’t give up Til you reach the top (FIGHT!) you’re the best in town (FIGHT!) Listen to that sound A little bit of all you got Can never bring you down
You’re the best! Around! Nothing’s gonna ever keep you down You’re the Best! Around!

still a lingering sense there that rave culcha was an actual, not just a musical 'revolution' (his word). which i think kind of destabilizes things. and also: how is shoegazey retreat from thatcherite/majorite reality any worse/more apolitical than people necking ecstasy in volume?
― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Saturday, 8 December 2007 13:06 (eighteen years ago)
Well ravers were getting into some serious rucks with the rozzers, and there was no legislation passed specifically to outlaw shoegazing, but I take yr point.
― Noodle Vague, Saturday, 8 December 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)
Anglophiles would probably argue that British indie rock of the '80s and '90s failed to find success here because of the conservatism of American radio. But maybe the failure of U.K. indie, shoegaze and Britpop comes down to these genres' gradual divorce from black music. Fetishizing the guitar sounds of the '60s, they forgot about its rhythmic base and impulse toward sonic hybridity.
While I agree with most of what Reynolds says about the records themselves, I think he's building a foundation for the rest of his argument out a convenient coincidence more than anything else. Post-91 or 92, how much black British music actually translated into US success? Surely it was the US rock hangover from grunge that preventing most Brit bands from becoming a success in the States (that and most of them being rubbish).
Meanwhile, I suppose, the US had its own black music that was sweeping away all its path, so it's hardly surprising there wasn't much room for jungle or garage, whatever Reynolds claims.
― Matt DC, Saturday, 8 December 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, it's not like Pavement et al weren't "divorced from black music" too.
― Noodle Vague, Saturday, 8 December 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)
The letters in response to the article are painful, and particularly the "Editor's Choice" ones. Get one spellcheck...and, yeah, I know it's "just the internet" or whatever, but, show some simple consideration for the people who will end up reading your letter, and at least make an effort to write in complete sentences.
― dell, Sunday, 9 December 2007 11:36 (eighteen years ago)
i admire SR's cojones in a way, zinging the anglophiles... trying to think of an equivalent, like a detroit-born music critic resident in london writing about how shitty techno is and how lame british dance music fans are for falling for it.
― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Sunday, 9 December 2007 11:48 (eighteen years ago)
Everett True: Triumphant. Epic. Grandiose. Fantastic. Soaring violins which sound like they'd die for one taste of your love. A voice that sounds like it was forged in the depths of orgasm. Drums that rattle at the very foundations of lust itself. Lyrics that dissect love with such gentle brutality that they nearly start me yearning for female company again. A tune that bears an uncanny resemblance to The Fun Boy Three's lachrymose "Tunnel of Love" - but, what the hell, if you're gonna steal, do it blatantly. "12 Reasons..." has been My Life Story's show-stopping final number for close on two years, and in no way does this dissapoint. Single of the summer.

― Dom Passantino, Thursday, 10 January 2008 10:43 (eighteen years ago)
Seriously, Swells taste redefines "lol 90s". Rage Against the Machine, Daphne and Celeste, Dandy Warhols, Asian Dub Foundation... I can only assume he also wrote articles praising Zubaz and Ethan Hawke's performance in "Reality Bites".
― Dom Passantino, Thursday, 10 January 2008 10:44 (eighteen years ago)
Still, he had the courage of his comicly misguided convictions, at least. You couldn't exactly say that about Mark Beaumont.
― Neil S, Thursday, 10 January 2008 10:45 (eighteen years ago)

OK i'm just basing this on Mika right now but will Adele even have a #1 single? at least Lily Allen didn't release 'Smile' until later Summer so people weren't able to include her in the New Year predictathon. and Kate Nash's and Scouting For Girls success, tho freakishly rapid, feels relatively organic still (or at least just comes from traditional airplay route more than anything else).

Good article! Apart from the "always burning since the world's been turning" bit, which is a bit clunky, like.

Nice article, Dom! I'd go so far as to say that it constitutes a stunning return to form.
Seriously, though, you've got some great writing chops, cheers.

KELLY BROOK SHOWS US HER FRUITY SIDE
AND REVEALS HOW SHE STAYS COOL IN BED – DESPITE LOOKING SO HOT! Curvy Kelly Brook bares her true colours in bed and uncovers how she stays looking so fresh and full of zing.
Looking fun, fruity and full of vitality, Kelly reveals her biggest bedroom secret - the latest range of high-tech beds from Silentnight called PocketZing™.
The new mattresses filled with pro-biotic microcapsules called Purotex®, work on the same principle as the pro-biotic yoghurt drinks, by putting friendly bacteria into the fabric of the mattress - helping you feel full of zing in the mornings!
Created by a team of sleep experts at Silentnight, its pocket spring system guarantees to support your body no matter what your shape or size and its unique Breathable Airflow Border allows air to pass through the mattress, to ensure you keep cool - no matter how hot you look in bed.
Kelly Brook comments: “Having such a busy schedule means I’m constantly on the go and don’t always have the time to look after my body in the way I’d like. Having a bed with pro-biotic qualities means it’s doing my body good while I sleep – you can’t ask for more than that from a bed!”
“I’m not known for being a morning person, but I’m hoping that will change with my new bed! Let’s face it, everyone could do with a bit of zing in the mornings… couldn’t they?”
PocketZing™ is currently available nationally via Dreams or at www.silentnight.co.uk Prices start from £949.
