RZA: RAEKWON'S ALBUM AFTER WU TANG'S // Aug 22, 2007
Raekwon's "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx II" album will be right behind the Wu Clan's LP "The 8 Diagrams", so RZA in an interview.

"That shit is fire. Some shit you gotta age in a barrel. Word, we rocked for a whole year on that. That shit started to come first, but it's time for the Wu, 'cause it's not always about individuals."

"Son, no words," he added about co-producing with Dr. Dre. "He's a master. What can I say that we don't know? It's just pure energy."

am0n, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

not saying i believe every word some anonymous 'insider' says, but u mad if you think Aftermath isn't gonna shit the bed and never release that album.

"u misinformed" doesn't have the same ring to it

am0n, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

That Ice Water album is pretty bad. Better than U-God's crew, worse than Ghostface's.

paulhw, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

the track titles on it are beyond generic

am0n, Wednesday, 19 September 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, it's the worsr kind of faceless tough guy (+ occasionally drinks on in the club guy & back in the day guy) rapping over really , really forgettable synth n strings beats.

paulhw, Thursday, 20 September 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

eight months pass...

Rae and Cap in the house tonight with Slick Rick and Ghost on the guest list.

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 19 June 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

When I saw him play recently, he prematurely cut short his autograph signing session at the merch table because he had to take a shit. He was like 'Yo, I gotta take a shit'

That's what I'd say too, I guess.

rizzx, Friday, 20 June 2008 10:51 (seventeen years ago)

Jill Scott, Immortal Technique, Melle Mel, Big Noyd, Spoonie Gee in the house as well. Interesting night.

But it's not crap. Admittedly, it falls short of his attempt to rekindle the old Cuban Linx flame, but it's still miles ahead of most other hip-hop. FWIW, I think Raekwon is rapping better than any other Wu member nowadays.

brightscreamer, Monday, 2 February 2009 02:22 (sixteen years ago)

serious q, what makes u think either of these trax is going to be on the album (which is never going to come out btw). he's released like 20 mixtapes of potential cuban linx 2 material

cos like, people say that a lot of hip hop fans dont pay for shit and only like to get music for free but they dont know they pain of having to have to get through mix cd after mix cd in search of a few good songs.

p-noid (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 2 February 2009 10:59 (sixteen years ago)

criminology 2 is great and his verse on the q-tip rmx is incredible as well - dude still has it (even liked that track that leaked way back when that was supposedly cb2 - the one that had ghost spitting really nasty sex shit on it)

Raekwon's good, but his flow seems a little stilted to me. Also, half the time I have no idea what the fuck he's talking about. Nevertheless, Cuban Linx is one of the greatest hiphop albums of all time.

Jesus Christ, Attorney at Law (res), Monday, 2 February 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)

the former and latter halves of that post seem to be at odds.

crackers is biters (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 2 February 2009 16:58 (sixteen years ago)

Well, the production is fucking amazing.

Jesus Christ, Attorney at Law (res), Monday, 2 February 2009 17:01 (sixteen years ago)

That was RZA at his prime, and to this day I have not heard another producer whose beats can compare to those in terms of cinematics, atmosphere, and innovation.

Jesus Christ, Attorney at Law (res), Monday, 2 February 2009 17:03 (sixteen years ago)

will we get chapter 2 of this?

eman, Monday, 2 February 2009 17:13 (sixteen years ago)

Gee, who knew The Rza made totally awesome beats in the 90s that can be described as cinematic? This is boring. But not boring like most other hip-hop. We're miles ahead here

The eMo City Don (surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally), Monday, 2 February 2009 17:32 (sixteen years ago)

most hiphop sucks compared to that stuff. most hiphop sucked compared to it in the 90s as well. what is your point, exactly?

Jesus Christ, Attorney at Law (res), Monday, 2 February 2009 17:38 (sixteen years ago)

ive not heard raekwons 2nd album in ages, and have only heard bits and pieces of his american cream team/ice water projects, but im surprised people dont get pissy at him like they do about nas in terms of dropping off, not rhyme-wise (cos he hasnt), but album/song-wise.

p-noid (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 2 February 2009 18:24 (sixteen years ago)

This kind of bullshit is exactly why I don't like either Cuban Linx disc. Too many goddamn skits and intros and outros. A lot of the Wu albums have that problem, but Cuban Linx always seems particularly overloaded with bullshit filler to me.

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Monday, 7 September 2009 18:22 (sixteen years ago)

yeah it's really a hassle to have to get up from the couch and move the needle to the next track on your turntable - if only i had this on mp3 and could hit some kind of "skip button"

k3vin k., Monday, 7 September 2009 18:38 (sixteen years ago)

The whole point, though, is that the stuff is a waste of time...I mean, is there anyone who listens to the skits and enjoys them over and over? Do the artists record them because they're pining for the lost days of radio drama? I mean, what is the point of skits on hip-hop albums? What do they add to the package?

neither good nor bad, just a kid like you (unperson), Monday, 7 September 2009 18:45 (sixteen years ago)

all the skits on cuban linx 1 are classic

butthurt (deej), Monday, 7 September 2009 18:51 (sixteen years ago)

I think skits can occasionally be entertaining if they're well thought out, like on the first Gravediggaz album ("360 questions for the Gravediggaz!"), but I hate the ones that sound like the rappers were just talking bullshit between takes in the studio. They remind me of the improvised dramas me and me friends used to tape on cassette when were younger; sure, for those involved they were hilarious to listen, but they must've been absolutely boring for anyone not in the joke. Except that our home tapes never got a million-wide audience.

^^^this. But Wu-Tang are pretty much the only folk who can do entertaining skits and I wish they didn't fucking exist. However, complaining about skits in 2009 is pretty futile. You'd think rappers would have got the fucking point already, non?

I don't think anyone's noted how short most of the tracks are...? Which is not a bad thing at all, imho, I like the way it keeps things flowing. You get a little intro, a taste of the beat, a couple of verses and then they're out. All business, no bullshit (unlike the 8 Diagrams, where everything seemed to drag on interminably with repeated choruses and whatnot)

It's amazingly focused, and Raekwon is sharp as ever, but listening to Ghost's inferior Ghostdini Raekwon sounds stunted. Normally I let form shape my response to content, but Raekwon's tales about the game are...rote. He's also humorless, which I'm killing myself for not noticing before.

Raekwon is totally humorless but I don't see why that's a problem? this album's great, I'm gonna be rockin it a lot during the rainy months, methinks

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

I'm just spoiled after years of Ghostface riches.

lihaperäpukamat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 22:01 (sixteen years ago)

i always thought that was the thing abt raekwon--he's so low key and egoless and almost blank, and then he serves up these incredible guest spots to ghostface and other guys that you can kind of forget about him. but then you remember he's such a ridiculously good rapper and you're like damn i could listen to this guy forever.

i guess it's like most guys want to be larger than life personalities and he just wants to disappear into the woodwork.

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 20 October 2009 22:05 (sixteen years ago)

I really don't like Ghostdeini, aside from a couple tracks. Dirty sex rap Ghost and thug-lover Ghost don't do much for me.

So wait, Alfred, are you saying the inferior Ghostface album is causing you to cool on the Raekwon disc? Am I reading you right?

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 22:06 (sixteen years ago)

He's saying even this inferior Ghost joint is making Rae seem lacking in personality, I think?

im Haus der Lols (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

I've only listened to Ghostdini once so far but my initial impression of it is pretty positive - a lot of the beats have the sheen of new R&B but they're still kinda crusty underneath and there's lots of good hooks. Lyrically "Guest House" is Ghost in top form, great storytelling there. the Stapleton Sex song is a little much (and I can dig sex raps as long as there's some humor in it - I'm a big Too $hort/Kool Keith/2 Live Crew fan). I don't think its his best but its an interesting entry in his catalog, I like that he's willing to branch out and do this kind of silly concept album and there's a bunch of ideas in it that work well.

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 20 October 2009 22:10 (sixteen years ago)

"Ghost House" is prime Ghost, and "Stapleton Sex" and "Stay" contain two of the warmest sex raps I've heard in months. Too often the R&B samples/guests carry the album though.

It's not entirely fair to hold the Chef responsible for what he isn't, but he sounds so one-dimensional next to Ghost.

each digging as deep as they can and dredging up the most fucked-up images they can

this is a gross mischaracterization of the album. i guess i've always just treated it as performance--it'd be like calling out 40 year old metal dudes for still writing about satan or something--sure you can do it but then YOU look like the not-fun one.

lihaperäpukamat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:22 (sixteen years ago)

don't make me come down there Alfred

a full circle lol (J0hn D.), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:30 (sixteen years ago)

Now look what you did.

Point is, I think that blog linked is making a pretty ridiculous argument as to why the album doesn't succeed. Thinking Rae sounds "one-dimensional" or boring, totally fair criticism, even if I think its far wide of the mark. But this dismissive "lol old dudes shouldn't be thuggin" is ridiculous.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:36 (sixteen years ago)

What's that Scott Fitzgerald quote in which he addresses critics about his choice of material – i.e writing about the rich? "My god, it was my material, and all I had to work with!" I agree, but tone – the attitude towards the material – that makes the difference.

lihaperäpukamat (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

And the question of tone is a fair criticism, I just don't know that I'm hearing the same thing you are. I'm mainly railing against that blog post linked above, not specifically you Alfred.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, i kinda like the age aspect of it...sales are down...the walls keep closing in....these kids on the corner keep getting younger and you're still out grindin....it's way cinematic IMO

plus everyone feels like that, just in life

could it be that it was all so shipley? (M@tt He1ges0n), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 15:45 (sixteen years ago)

its the Donald Goines/Iceberg Slim/Chester Himes school of ghetto storytelling, which often come from old guys who are looking back on their life in "the game" or whatever and still struggling to survive. it may be humorless, and it may be really grim, but no it doesn't bother me. That strangled 2yo line that that's cited int he blog is a striking, classic Ghostface image for ex.

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Wednesday, 21 October 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

Plus, if your point is "oh these old dudes aren't REALLY out there selling drugs and getting in shootouts"...well...they never really were! it was always art, it was always storytelling and poetry, it was always mental cinema...like i'm not saying rae never sold drugs or shot a gun, but by time wu was blowing up and they are touring and shit, it's not like he's holding down some corner...that lifestyle was gone WAY before he did even the first cuban links...

so who cares? it's art and it either works or it doesn't...i think it does, remarkably so....

raekwon doesnt have anything much new to say, ditto ghostface, but rae doesnt sound as fierce as he once did. whereas ghost on this album weirdly seems to have refound his fire. but raekwons basically been rewriting the same verse for several years now. im just happy he managed to make a decent album with it this time. even though i dont really feel the need to keep listening to it much. its solid rather than remarkable. im glad its there, just dont need to pull it out all the time. shitty artwork too.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 22 October 2009 09:48 (sixteen years ago)

don't think ghost ever lost his fire

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)

Nope. Like I've said on other friends, he's the only one of the Wu whose range keeps expanding.

yeah. RZA's lost the plot in a big way, for ex.

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

method man's been dropping some good verses as of late IMO, he shines on this album

GZA never fails to fascinate me, he's evolved into his own, weird hermetically sealed style of wordplay....i remember reading that he doesn't even listen to music really anymore, he says he just likes to have the windows down and listen to the wind...it's kinda cool how much he's totally just gone down his own wormhole and lost touch with everything else that's going on in hip hop.

hotel coral essex (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:42 (sixteen years ago)

Meth's still turning out good verses but I totally don't need to hear a whole album of him

Jesus, the Czar of Czars (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)

This year's Meth and Red album had some good moments.

& other try hard shitfests (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 22 October 2009 17:46 (sixteen years ago)

ghost never 'lost' his fire as such, but pretty much since bulletproof wallets, ive found his albums totally predictable, if solid.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Thursday, 22 October 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

i hate posting shit that sounds like a youtube comment. i gotta admit i never actually got wu tang. i never got it at all, or i thought they weren't worth getting, and i was sitting in my room listening to blueprint, and if i listened to old new york rap i wanted it to sound like reasonable doubt or it was written, not cuban linx, which i probably only copped cause i saw nas was on it, with the weakest fucking verse on the cd. i played it a few times and i couldn't even HEAR the raps, man. it wasn't like reasonable doubt, right? it wasn't even like tragedy or cormega. the fuck these dudes talking about? the fuck are wallabees? who the fuck drives a montero? then i was like, shit, listen to this, man, fuck, raekwon... fly like cashmere, last year my team caught bodies in grassmere hit a store owner named mike livonia... i don't to describe to yall how cuban linx sounds, right? and ghost... i really dug that shit. cuban linx 2... that's the only thing i've been listening to on the train every morning. so fuckin good. i heard some dudes on the radio like, "raekwon all right, he's the kind of rapper you can't really ever quote him line for line, like that," nah, i know every line on the cd, quotable as mega or nas, maybe more. i love jada and styles on this too. that's it.

dylannn, Thursday, 22 October 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

I know a lot of Rae's lines but they aren't really "quotable" in the sense that none of them are punchlines/one liners, they're all part of a bigger story

this is the shit. first rap reference to toyota cressida. hearing az verses to me is still a real experience, how he can take some pedestrian shit and not be too flashy and just make it sound airtight and perfect. i remember talking to ethan back in the day about like nas and mega, about formal constraints making rappers like az what they are-- i forget the bulk of the conversation. but, whatever, this is supposed to be about raekwon. but it's going to be about az. when i hear him rap, shit, dude missed his shot and he should be retired, living in the south of france, but he fucked up or he never got his shot, but he's so fucking good.

when i play this shit, it's the first time i've ever gotten reactionary on some, "man, how niggas trippin on fucking GUCCI MANE??? shit, yall need to get on that real shit. RAEKWON THE CHEF, AZ BABY" then i realize that's crazy.

yah this is on point
what did u think of the blaq poet record that came out? hes super one dimensional & obv not as great a lyricist as rae or az but i thought blaqprint had a refreshing purity of roughneck headknocking raps

call all destroyer, Friday, 23 October 2009 02:20 (sixteen years ago)

tons of xps: cad, j/v/c, et al, I think you are missing the point. It isn't at all that old dudes shouldn't be thuggin'. It's not even that OB4CL2 is one-dimensional (which it is, to an almost ridiculous point), so much as that Raekwon is capable of so much more. He takes one aspect of OB4CL's many-doored universe and discards the rest, leaving a depthless, disappointing husk. The fact that the one dimension Rae focuses on is the most one wearying possible makes OB4CL2 an even harder pill to swallow.

There's also the other point Soderberg makes about the hardass-ification modern East Coast rap in general, which has gotten insular and repellant to non-hardcore fans of the style over the past five years or so. I do think he underrates Beanie Sigel and D-Block. The important point that he misses is that Beans and Styles do that type of straight up no-nonsense thug-rap BETTER than Rae & Ghost. I very much prefer Beanie's new album to OB4CL2.

a warhol done painted my sister nell (The Reverend), Friday, 23 October 2009 10:31 (sixteen years ago)

deej, there's a local rap show here, on the radio, i mean, and i'm guaranteed to hear at least one track off blaqprint per week. to be honest, not into it at all. i hope blaq poet isn't reading this, but i'd love to hear some fresher sounding raps, kind of a waste of a cd of premo beats.

dylannn, Sunday, 25 October 2009 22:14 (sixteen years ago)

"hardass-ification modern East Coast rap in general." / "occasionally, the sheer ugliness of the details boils over and the Wu's veteran status."

i think i didn't really 36 chambers or whatever for the opposite reason that this guy doesn't really dig cuban linx 2. i like my raps in a mode of social realism, filthy and detailed, even if it slips into hyperbole. i fuck with late period jada and styles a lot more when they say USED TO MOVE THEM BROWN RECTANGLES instead of clothing it all in metaphor and shit.

i don't like metaphors. i love rae and i love ghost, but i think styles and jada have the best verses on cuban linx 2. it's a hard contrast between jada and styles on 'broken safety' and rae's verse, even if he does the same stuff, coke prices and guns, etc.

yeah yeah ok, I hear a few mediocre wu-tang albums, I stop paying attention for a couple years, then BLAM they hit like they never went away, what else is new

everybody's talking lyrics and very little about how grimy the album is, that's the main draw for me, I'd still dig this if it were a full album of raekwon chinese takeout food order raps, it's all head bobs and thousand yard stares from over here son

I know RZA only produced a handful of tracks, but the best parts sound like they were pieced together from submerged equipment & tapes he lost in the basement flood of 1996

I asked this on some other thread but never got an answer

what the hell kind of name is Raekwon, anyway? where does that come from? I can get that Rae is probably an abbreviation of Corey, and his last name is woods but... it's just such a weird name for a rapper, and I've never seen it discussed anywhere.

the weirdest thing to me about is this is a guy in a group with tons of nicknames/aliases, many of which are not too hard to parse and have a clear backstory, but Rae's name doesn't even get a mention in the Wu-Tang Manual (unlike his "Chef" nickname)

I've always though it comes from some '70s kung fu movie, like the name of the group. Like, maybe there's a character called "Ray Kwan" in one of them or something?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 26 October 2016 06:44 (nine years ago)

Kwon is a korean name. Don't think you'll find it in kung-fu movies.

Οὖτις, Thursday, 27 October 2016 17:12 (nine years ago)

although I guess it coulda been Ray Quan

but still this seems like a stretch

Οὖτις, Thursday, 27 October 2016 17:13 (nine years ago)

Plenty of dudes named Ray Kwan living in Hong Kong...

Tuomas, Thursday, 27 October 2016 17:24 (nine years ago)

yeah this was always my way of thinking, it was kwan but maybe it was transliterated as "kwon" in 70s movie subtitles

nice to see that naming kids Raekwon had a big spike around 1996, seems appropriate. I'd like to see the numbers on babies named Ol' Dirty Bastard.

Al Moon Faced Poon (Moodles), Thursday, 27 October 2016 17:35 (nine years ago)

if you google it, he says it's his 5% Nation name, though doesn't explain beyond that. Also, his middle name is Quontrell

aha!

Οὖτις, Thursday, 27 October 2016 20:01 (nine years ago)

haha that's so obvious doh!

harold melvin and the bluetones (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 27 October 2016 20:03 (nine years ago)

So his full name is Corey Quontrell Woods, seems like the mystery is solved indeed.

What's the vocal sample in the beginning of Kiss the Ring? Before the song kicks in and it goes Elton John there's a male vocal bit that I recognize, maybe from another Rae or Wu track but I'm spacing.

Raekwon has a free show this Saturday in Prospect Park where he'll be celebrating the 30th anniversary of Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… "with special guests joining throughout the night." Opens with a DJ set by Scram Jones, this is part of Lyricist Lounge.
