Raekwon's good, but his flow seems a little stilted to me. Also, half the time I have no idea what the fuck he's talking about. Nevertheless, Cuban Linx is one of the greatest hiphop albums of all time.

This kind of bullshit is exactly why I don't like either Cuban Linx disc. Too many goddamn skits and intros and outros. A lot of the Wu albums have that problem, but Cuban Linx always seems particularly overloaded with bullshit filler to me.

I think skits can occasionally be entertaining if they're well thought out, like on the first Gravediggaz album ("360 questions for the Gravediggaz!"), but I hate the ones that sound like the rappers were just talking bullshit between takes in the studio. They remind me of the improvised dramas me and me friends used to tape on cassette when were younger; sure, for those involved they were hilarious to listen, but they must've been absolutely boring for anyone not in the joke. Except that our home tapes never got a million-wide audience.

I don't think anyone's noted how short most of the tracks are...? Which is not a bad thing at all, imho, I like the way it keeps things flowing. You get a little intro, a taste of the beat, a couple of verses and then they're out. All business, no bullshit (unlike the 8 Diagrams, where everything seemed to drag on interminably with repeated choruses and whatnot)

also some of the between song banter is megalolz ("gonna go Ricky Retardo on that nigga")

It's amazingly focused, and Raekwon is sharp as ever, but listening to Ghost's inferior Ghostdini Raekwon sounds stunted. Normally I let form shape my response to content, but Raekwon's tales about the game are...rote. He's also humorless, which I'm killing myself for not noticing before.

i always thought that was the thing abt raekwon--he's so low key and egoless and almost blank, and then he serves up these incredible guest spots to ghostface and other guys that you can kind of forget about him. but then you remember he's such a ridiculously good rapper and you're like damn i could listen to this guy forever.

i guess it's like most guys want to be larger than life personalities and he just wants to disappear into the woodwork.

I really don't like Ghostdeini, aside from a couple tracks. Dirty sex rap Ghost and thug-lover Ghost don't do much for me.

I've only listened to Ghostdini once so far but my initial impression of it is pretty positive - a lot of the beats have the sheen of new R&B but they're still kinda crusty underneath and there's lots of good hooks. Lyrically "Guest House" is Ghost in top form, great storytelling there. the Stapleton Sex song is a little much (and I can dig sex raps as long as there's some humor in it - I'm a big Too $hort/Kool Keith/2 Live Crew fan). I don't think its his best but its an interesting entry in his catalog, I like that he's willing to branch out and do this kind of silly concept album and there's a bunch of ideas in it that work well.

"Ghost House" is prime Ghost, and "Stapleton Sex" and "Stay" contain two of the warmest sex raps I've heard in months. Too often the R&B samples/guests carry the album though.

It's not entirely fair to hold the Chef responsible for what he isn't, but he sounds so one-dimensional next to Ghost.

Point is, I think that blog linked is making a pretty ridiculous argument as to why the album doesn't succeed. Thinking Rae sounds "one-dimensional" or boring, totally fair criticism, even if I think its far wide of the mark. But this dismissive "lol old dudes shouldn't be thuggin" is ridiculous.

What's that Scott Fitzgerald quote in which he addresses critics about his choice of material – i.e writing about the rich? "My god, it was my material, and all I had to work with!" I agree, but tone – the attitude towards the material – that makes the difference.

And the question of tone is a fair criticism, I just don't know that I'm hearing the same thing you are. I'm mainly railing against that blog post linked above, not specifically you Alfred.

raekwon doesnt have anything much new to say, ditto ghostface, but rae doesnt sound as fierce as he once did. whereas ghost on this album weirdly seems to have refound his fire. but raekwons basically been rewriting the same verse for several years now. im just happy he managed to make a decent album with it this time. even though i dont really feel the need to keep listening to it much. its solid rather than remarkable. im glad its there, just dont need to pull it out all the time. shitty artwork too.

I know a lot of Rae's lines but they aren't really "quotable" in the sense that none of them are punchlines/one liners, they're all part of a bigger story

this is the shit. first rap reference to toyota cressida. hearing az verses to me is still a real experience, how he can take some pedestrian shit and not be too flashy and just make it sound airtight and perfect. i remember talking to ethan back in the day about like nas and mega, about formal constraints making rappers like az what they are-- i forget the bulk of the conversation. but, whatever, this is supposed to be about raekwon. but it's going to be about az. when i hear him rap, shit, dude missed his shot and he should be retired, living in the south of france, but he fucked up or he never got his shot, but he's so fucking good.

when i play this shit, it's the first time i've ever gotten reactionary on some, "man, how niggas trippin on fucking GUCCI MANE??? shit, yall need to get on that real shit. RAEKWON THE CHEF, AZ BABY" then i realize that's crazy.

tons of xps: cad, j/v/c, et al, I think you are missing the point. It isn't at all that old dudes shouldn't be thuggin'. It's not even that OB4CL2 is one-dimensional (which it is, to an almost ridiculous point), so much as that Raekwon is capable of so much more. He takes one aspect of OB4CL's many-doored universe and discards the rest, leaving a depthless, disappointing husk. The fact that the one dimension Rae focuses on is the most one wearying possible makes OB4CL2 an even harder pill to swallow.

There's also the other point Soderberg makes about the hardass-ification modern East Coast rap in general, which has gotten insular and repellant to non-hardcore fans of the style over the past five years or so. I do think he underrates Beanie Sigel and D-Block. The important point that he misses is that Beans and Styles do that type of straight up no-nonsense thug-rap BETTER than Rae & Ghost. I very much prefer Beanie's new album to OB4CL2.

i don't like metaphors. i love rae and i love ghost, but i think styles and jada have the best verses on cuban linx 2. it's a hard contrast between jada and styles on 'broken safety' and rae's verse, even if he does the same stuff, coke prices and guns, etc.

"ason jones" is one of the best songs out this year

I've always though it comes from some '70s kung fu movie, like the name of the group. Like, maybe there's a character called "Ray Kwan" in one of them or something?

Kwon is a korean name. Don't think you'll find it in kung-fu movies.

although I guess it coulda been Ray Quan

but still this seems like a stretch

yeah this was always my way of thinking, it was kwan but maybe it was transliterated as "kwon" in 70s movie subtitles

if you google it, he says it's his 5% Nation name, though doesn't explain beyond that. Also, his middle name is Quontrell

What's the vocal sample in the beginning of Kiss the Ring? Before the song kicks in and it goes Elton John there's a male vocal bit that I recognize, maybe from another Rae or Wu track but I'm spacing.
