Reeeeally good album. He's finally making stuff as good as what he made in the early Libertines days. That first Babyshambles record was brutal.
And, despite ripping off The Kinks for the first single ("Delivery") it's a pretty good single, I think.
Some really great lyrics on this record too, but I'm not going to quote any.

I've never actually listened to Babyshambles outside of a song or two, and I think I only had the Libertines album when Pete Doherty was still in the band. What's a good starting point for listening, the first Babyshambles album or this one?
― mh, Monday, 1 October 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)
i wish i could recommend you something without some shitfaced-hipster giving me his bullshit business, but. . . the libertines' 'up the bracket' (including the "what a waster single"), the "fuck forever" single by babyshambles, and the new babyshambles album. this is the best rock music this decade. these small brains are flipping their shit only because it's uncool to like rock music, these years. it's a new form of rockism; this popist bullshit.
i wish these shitfucks would just enjoy music they happen to enjoy. that's what i do. i don't care if it's rock, or ambient, or dance, or what the hell ever. these people here, are sickening. going out of their way, wasting their time, and giving me this. . . jesus fucking christ. some people really don't deserve music.

The annoying thing is that about 60% of this record is really good, but threads like this discourage me from trying to explain why (and I'm not a big Pete fan). So it becomes another dead letter thread. And yes, this is thanks to one-liners that sound like they're terribly meta-clever and knowingly cutting, but are ultimately a touch joyless and immature. Call it the Dom Passantino syndrome.

I've heard a few tracks off it. The best that can be said, in my opinion, is that Stephen Street did a good production job in making Doherty's songs slightly less anaemic than on his previous outings.
― Neil S, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)
If you're going to go into it with the attitude that there's "no way it could be listenable", than obviously you're going to hate it, you idiot.
If, however, you knew nothing about the band or the lead singer, and it was "pitchfork approved" so that you knew it was okay for you to like it, you'd be all over it, because it's a GOOD FUCKING ALBUM.

― max r, Thursday, 4 October 2007 12:37 (eighteen years ago)
see, this simply isn't true and never has been. so many times i arrive at a record expecting to hate it and leave 40 minutes later thinking "crikey, how 'bout that? it wasn't half bad". how else could i have admitted on this very board that james blunt's latest single is not at all terrible?
as to the libertines/babyshambles, the former meant nothing to me at the time (i suspect) since i wasn't in the uk when they "exploded" onto the scene. up the bracket was half a decent album though, and the second album about a third of a good album.
as such, the forthcoming libertines "best of" (yes, a "best of", after two albums), is a six out of 10 thanks to 'up the bracket', 'time for heroes', 'don't look back into the sun', 'can't stand me now', 'what a waster', 'what became of the likely lads' and seven slices of awful filler.
the new babyshambles single is not awful. about this, i was pleasantly surprised. as far as i can work out, pete's not actually got a guitartist who knows how to write and play, so i'm approaching the new album with genuine intrigue.
― CharlieNo4, Thursday, 4 October 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

― CharlieNo4, Thursday, 4 October 2007 13:26 (eighteen years ago)
I don't hate Pete Doherty any more.
I don't understand why you'd think of him as a fake Romantic, he's a straight Romantic. And because we're clever and wise we see right through Romantics, we chuckle knowingly at their archaic schtick, we think about Jim Morrison and we get all embarrassed cos it's mostly like looking at ourselves when we were 16. But it's a legitimate approach to making art, I think. Legitimate and fragile. More than most aesthetics this one relies on empathy, and if you don't got that empathy then you get all grossed out and make with the zings. But occasionally most of us feel a bit Pete Doherty, I think, and when yr having one of those days then you can appreciate him for the all-too-infrequently great songwriter that he is. Half a dozen brilliant songs and a bunch of by-the-numbers genre pieces is still more than lots of people manage. So I just wait for the odd track to creep up on me and slyly imbed itself.
― Noodle Vague, Thursday, 4 October 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but to me, that remark is ignorant, especially saying "There is NO way ANY of this will be listenable". Oh, you're so right ! Not one note on the whole album will be tolerable in any way ! Great point !
Hope that clears it up.
― Erock Zombie, Thursday, 4 October 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)
i listened to the song "delivery" it sounds fine. like the 101ers, or some dudes that love the kinks, no crime in that...
but you know i saw some band from sheffield called the hipshakes that no one likes that kind of sound like the oblivions that were just as good as this probably better live, damn those dudes threw down hard....but this isn't bad, it's just weird that this band got so much hype.

Maybe Dom's the supplier.

I've been to enough shit gigs by bands I actually like, so this is just crazy enough to work. Also I'd like to place a fiver on Dom entering the Priory by April next year.

word has it that these stadium gigs are less than half full and the atmosphere has been rubbish.
great news all round, fingers crossed he continues his path of getting older, fatter and more rubbish, and avoids the livefastdieyoung route to fake genius

^^^had half off the seating taped off last night, plus the arena had the back wall pulled forward halfway.
Babyshambles: I just don't get it man. I really don't get it. The live show ends with a karaoke singalong to "Fuck Forever" with a bouncing ball on the lyrics, and the bouncing ball is the union jack. And the only place I've ever seen circular representations of the Union Jack before are on the badges of BNP candidates. Just sayin'

I was (I think) one of the first people to review the Libertines in print. They had a union jack on the bass drum (I dunno if they always did, that was the only time I saw them) and I wrote something to the effect of "wtf is that about, it looks stupid" which got taken out, presumably for not being partisan enough

What's weird is that they wave the Union Jack around, but it's about ENGLISHNESS not BRITISHNESS. Doherty's the Henman Hill of rock.
― Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 10:12 (eighteen years ago)
sometimes I wonder if I'd hate this band if I were English, and then I realize that I don't give a shit

So you're just sayin' a circular representation of the British flag makes Pete Doherty fascist?
