i'm going with animal farm, though ilately i love monica more than ever.

Zeno, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 21:37 (eighteen years ago)

"Village Green"

W4LTER, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 21:46 (eighteen years ago)

always had a sentimental attachment to walter. the song, not the poster above me.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

This is really difficult, but I ended up voting for "Village Green".

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

"walter" was prob the most influntial track from the record, u can hear it echoes on many other acts songs..

Zeno, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

"Big Sky" just over "Picture Book," "Wicked Annabella" and the title track. Very tough.

da croupier, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Village Green, easily.

Alba, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

'Do You Remember Walter?'

zeus, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

Monica

dan selzer, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

"Animal Farm" by a million miles. Ray really opens up and sings on that one like I've rarely heard him sing anywhere else.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

"Do You Remember Walter", easily.

Euler, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

otm about "animal", and the powerfull ,dramatic production of it...goody

Zeno, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

I heart The Kinks, especially the Powerman album, but I'm still not convinced by this one. Apart from the title track, the songs always seemed a little sketchy and under-developed to me. (Although maybe that's the point.) I do love "Sitting by the Riverside", though. And rather this than "Arthur."

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

This was really hard. I went with my first choice, Starstruck, but it really could be almost any track...

James, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

I can't vote on this because I can't make up my mind. It's somewhere between "Village Green" (we all mean the second side cut, right? not the quasi-chant at the beginning of the album), "Picture Book," "People Taking..." "Starstruck" and "Animal Farm."

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

I've never noticed it before, but I have a version of this album missing tracks 5,6, 7 and 8.

Bob Six, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

Picture Book. We Are... a close second.

altho I think I am alone in preferring Face to Face, with this tied with Something Else.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

no wait what am I thinking "All of My Friends Were There"! Forgot that was on this album arrrgh change my vote!

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

you who made your choice "easily" are nuts. this is one of the most perfectly consistent albums ever made. i will probably end up going with the first track on side 1 or the last track on side 2, but even that choice has me pulling my hair out. those are all-time faves for me, whereas "monica" is a more recent fave. i also recently got into "last of the steam powered trains," which was a really slow grower for me (like, it took years). i used to rank this album behind both "face to face" and "something else," but the more time passes, the more this one keeps creeping up on me.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'm never buying a 'Castle' record again; they seem to have taken 4 tracks off and added "Days" as compensation.

Village Green, with Phenomenal Cat close behind.

Bob Six, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

"I've never noticed it before, but I have a version of this album missing tracks 5,6, 7 and 8."

the european version is missing some tracks i think.

Zeno, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

"you who made your choice "easily" are nuts"

"thiiis world is big and wide and half insane..

Zeno, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:36 (eighteen years ago)

It's a consistent album but consistently I think "Do You Remember Walter" is the highlight. For me "easily" meant "it's an easy choice for me" not "it's miles above the rest".

Euler, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:37 (eighteen years ago)

i still think you're nuts :)

not because you love "walter." but because you are capable of making an easy choice. though, strangely, walter has always been one of my least favorite songs here. it's uncharacteristically condescending towards an ordinary bloke.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

My ranking of the whole thing:

"Animal Farm" – 2:57
"Big Sky" – 2:49
"All of My Friends Were There" – 2:23
"Sitting by the Riverside" – 2:21
"Picture Book" – 2:34
"Do You Remember Walter?" – 2:23
"Starstruck" – 2:18
"Johnny Thunder" – 2:28
"People Take Pictures of Each Other" – 2:10
"The Village Green Preservation Society" – 2:45
"Monica" – 2:13
"Phenomenal Cat" – 2:34
"Wicked Annabella" – 2:40
"Village Green" – 2:08
"Last of the Steam-Powered Trains" – 4:03

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

it's uncharacteristically condescending towards an ordinary bloke.

I always thought it was more of a Chuck & Buck thing.

da croupier, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

this is really hard

ciderpress, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

See, I don't think the point is to be condescending toward Walter, but rather it's the big punch line about how memories of people remain. Walter doesn't get a chance to respond, and so I end up wondering if there was a Walter at all, or if he's just a construct of the narrator's memory, a way of hating himself for his own choices.

Euler, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

strangely, walter has always been one of my least favorite songs here. it's uncharacteristically condescending towards an ordinary bloke.

it's about him! (the "narrator") it's a really well-written piece of projection.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

(x-post)
interesting take. of course walter can't respond, because there's on evidence the narrator has the slightest clue where walter is or what he might be doing. he's just kind of smugly assuming that he's abandoned all his childhood dreams (and we are presumably meant to infer that the narrator hasn't). but, hmmm, if it's the narrator arguing with his inner self over his own dreams and memories, that might make it a very different song.

fact checking cuz, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 22:56 (eighteen years ago)

look at that, i got xpwned!

s1ocki, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

I have the 3- or 4-CD Village Green. never listen to it. never listen to the Kinks except for the early stuff like "Where Have All the Good Times Gone." think this is overrated album. but kind of love some of it and had excellent LSD experience listening to it in a farmhouse in Kentucky some years ago. my vote was for "Johnny Thunder."

whisperineddhurt, Tuesday, 2 October 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

I've never noticed it before, but I have a version of this album missing tracks 5,6, 7 and 8.

It probably has "Days" and "Mr. Songbird" instead then.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for it! better yet --> the video!!

Eisbaer, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 03:42 (eighteen years ago)

'animal farm' over 'village green', 'big sky','walter' and 'village pres..'

gman, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 04:00 (eighteen years ago)

Nothing beats Big Sky off this by miles.

Bimble, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

prolly Animal Farm, but i have a soft spot for Monica. and Walter's pretty great too. so's the rest of it. If we lived in a Castle and counted 'Days' then that would trounce everyting

Stormy Davis, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 04:48 (eighteen years ago)

no idea how anyone could profess to love the kinks yet not this album (and arthur!!)

J.D., Wednesday, 3 October 2007 05:01 (eighteen years ago)

Quite difficult choice.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 05:37 (eighteen years ago)

had excellent LSD experience listening to it in a farmhouse in Kentucky some years ago. my vote was for "Johnny Thunder."

There should be a thread on what's the best music you've ever heard on LSD; my bet is that it wouldn't be the classic psychedelic albums that most people might expect - but more idiosyncratic albums like this.

That said, acid's blown your mind dude - Johnny Thunder is pants.

Bob Six, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 07:27 (eighteen years ago)

This album blows my mind.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 08:24 (eighteen years ago)

It is out there. My second choice, matter of fact.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 3 October 2007 12:17 (eighteen years ago)

Wicked Annabella, 'cause it's scary!

I'm surprised, and surprised that no-one else was.

That's probly my fav. It pops into my head all of the time. I hate people who think that just b/c they have a digital camera they've suddenly been appointed documenter(documentarian?) of every goddamn social event.

Also, did anyone else notice this?:

Title track is easily my least favourite.

I like these:
"Last of the Steam-Powered Trains" – 4:03 1
"Monica" – 2:13 1
"People Take Pictures of Each Other" – 2:10 1

more than these:
The Village Green Preservation Society" – 2:45 11
"Big Sky" – 2:49 8
"Animal Farm" – 2:57 7

iatee, Monday, 15 February 2010 17:22 (fifteen years ago)

"People Take Pictures of Each Other" – 2:10 1

Disgraceful. I've always liked the Fiddler On the Roof vibe of this song.

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 14:53 (fifteen years ago)

I never reckoned much on this album back in the day, as it was supposed to be all about British Village Life as such.

Yet, line two is "God bless Donald Duck" which is USA, so I got the impression the whole album was sarcasm. Which put me off.

Eventually, I got a nice copy of the mono album (the opening track has an edge warp, which just about plays OK if the turntable is in a good mood), and enjoyed it more.

Then, "People take pictures" was on some ad, and it prompted me to dig it out again. (That track wouls have been a hit single, reckons I)

Then I managed to get the 10CD Kinks boxset for £25 or suchlike (see pollthread)

Mark G, Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

I think Ray Davies what knew about 'British Village Life' would probably have fitted on the back of a postage stamp. Unless Muswell Hill counts as a village.

Tom D (Tom D.), Tuesday, 16 February 2010 15:27 (fifteen years ago)

seven years pass...

Would have voted for either 'Big Sky' or 'Animal Farm', with 'Monica' and 'People Take Pictures of Each Other' being the two I like but don't love as much as the rest of the album. Superb record though, easily one of the finest albums to come out of the UK in 1968.

brimstead, Wednesday, 8 November 2017 23:18 (eight years ago)

I love the instrumental break on 'Last of the Steam Powered Trains', and I was surprised to learn that 'Village Green' was recorded a couple of years before the album but yet they didn't do anything with it until '68.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Wednesday, 8 November 2017 23:27 (eight years ago)

I love this album. Definitely one of the best 60s pop albums (up there with Pet Sounds, Revolver...).
The flow of fantastic melodies is unstoppable and the sound is warmer and fuller than on their previous output.
I'm surprised by the winner of the poll, though.
It's a good and fun song but nowhere near many of the other tracks.
I would have said "Animal Farm" or "Village Green".

AlXTC from Paris, Thursday, 9 November 2017 10:43 (eight years ago)

"Walter", definitely.

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Thursday, 9 November 2017 10:50 (eight years ago)

Also, "King Kong" from that time is such a prelude to T-Rex !

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Thursday, 9 November 2017 14:43 (eight years ago)

honestly think this is one of the best albums ever made. hard to pick a favorite but "Animal Farm" bounced around in my head for a very very long time.

bodak horseman (voodoo chili), Thursday, 9 November 2017 16:08 (eight years ago)

They were on fire from 1966-1971 ... they had an excellent singles discography from 'You Still Want Me' onwards, of course (their cover of 'Long Tall Sally' is a bit meh) but I love pretty much almost everything they put out 1966-1971.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Friday, 10 November 2017 07:21 (eight years ago)

The six albums from Kink Kontroversy to Lola are a fantastic run. Who has done better than that besides Frank Sinatra in the 1950s?

Josefa, Friday, 10 November 2017 07:41 (eight years ago)

impossible to choose, really, but i'd have gone with "walter" which always makes me melancholy. prob my favorite album of the decade.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Friday, 10 November 2017 08:31 (eight years ago)

Yeah they were incredible during that period. I must say I don't know much about their post Lola albums.
As for the Village Green album, I thought there might be something lacking for all its perfect pop : there's not really an emotional song, like "Waterloo Sunset" or "Don't Talk" or "God Only Knows" for Pet Sounds or "For No One" for Revolver, for instance.
It's mostly all pure upbeat pop. "Village Green" might be close to that kind of emotional song but it's not exactly that. There's more distance (in the songwriting and the arrangements).

AlXTC from Paris, Friday, 10 November 2017 09:03 (eight years ago)

AIXTC - some versions of this album include 'Days', which should be that emotional song you're looking for.

I have this album in mono and stereo edition, all on one disc, which has the original tracks as well as additions like Days. Lots of greatness.

I could go with the winner of the poll, but Last of the Steam-Powered Trains is another of my favourites here.
(But if Days would be eligible, it'd be Days!)

Valentijn, Friday, 10 November 2017 11:02 (eight years ago)

The fact that 'Days' (one of my favourite songs of all time) isn't on the album yet the album is still incredible says a lot about how strong the songwriting is.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Friday, 10 November 2017 15:04 (eight years ago)

the Kink Kronikles compilation that covers this period is insanely good as well, and includes a lot of the awesome singles that weren't on the albums

The Percy soundtrack, though...

I mean, it's not awful, but it's hardly on the level of the records that came before and after.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 10 November 2017 15:22 (eight years ago)

Wikip has Percy coming after "Lola" i.e. it's the last Pye album

Mark G, Friday, 10 November 2017 15:32 (eight years ago)

Percy did have one great song on it though. I think it's called "God's Children". Given that it's a soundtrack and they did do the excellent Muswell Hillbillies the next year I guess I can forgive them for it.

frogbs, Friday, 10 November 2017 15:35 (eight years ago)

wait, not the next year. the same year. though MH was clearly a different sound that doesn't really jive with the Pye era. it's probably the only great album they did outside it.

frogbs, Friday, 10 November 2017 15:36 (eight years ago)

"The Way Loved Used to Be", "Moments" and "Dreams" are all excellent too, re: Percy soundtrack

Terry Micawber (Tom D.), Friday, 10 November 2017 16:13 (eight years ago)

Those three and "God's Children" are better than most of "Muswell Hillbillies".

the Kink Kronikles compilation that covers this period is insanely good as well

and the great lost kinks album, which came out a year later and is every bit as good, compiling b-sides, unreleased miscellany, etc., from the same insanely good era.

fact checking cuz, Friday, 10 November 2017 18:54 (eight years ago)

I'd say The Kinks and Small Faces are my two favourite '60s bands from the UK. Just so much great music, a lot of which has still not been overplayed to death.

Gholdfish Killah (Turrican), Friday, 10 November 2017 19:03 (eight years ago)

frogbs, Wednesday, 15 August 2018 20:36 (seven years ago)

From what I've read, there's maybe 1-2 unreleased songs. Here's one of them:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOBjwkaW-T0

It sounds like this was recorded in 1973, as was (supposedly) the other unreleased song. I think they re-recorded some of the VGPS stuff then, to be used as part of a Preservation production. Most of the "unreleased" material on this set is in the form of backing tracks, alternate mixes, and radio/tv appearances.

This also has some Ray solo 2010 live recordings, for some reason. So basically, this is pretty barrel-scrapey, but comes with all sorts of vinyl doodads and posters and things.

I always think that Wicked Annabella gets very Beatlesque at the end, in an I Am The Walrus/Yer Blues kinda way, until I remember that the Kinks were contemporaries of the Beatles, and that Village Green probably predates some of the Beatles stuff it reminds me of...

The production on "Arthur" is far from perfect.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 August 2023 20:13 (two years ago)

Kinks records in general not known for their immaculate production tho tbh.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 August 2023 20:15 (two years ago)

To say the least.

Blecch on Blecch (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 17 August 2023 20:17 (two years ago)

Far from peefecy indeed but so much better compared to Village
Xxpost

*perfect*

actually think Muswell Hillbillies is the worst produced Kinks LP

VGPS doesn't sound good but I think that fits the pastoral/return to simpler times theme of the album

frogbs, Thursday, 17 August 2023 20:22 (two years ago)

totally agree

out-of-print LaserDisc edition (sleeve), Thursday, 17 August 2023 20:25 (two years ago)

Is hard to pick a worst one!

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 August 2023 20:51 (two years ago)

imo there's a difference between albums that sound grungey and lo-fi and those where you suspect the engineer or producer actually fucked something up and Muswell crosses that line. I actually looked up my copy on Discogs and there are a bunch of comments about whether or not Dynaflex pressings just suck along with responses that say "no it actually just sounds like that"

frogbs, Thursday, 17 August 2023 20:59 (two years ago)

I think it was the first one they recorded at Konk Studios?

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 August 2023 21:02 (two years ago)

... strike that, "Preservation Act" was the first Konk album.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 August 2023 21:04 (two years ago)

xps I dunno, VGPS sounds fine to me in the sense that it's not unlike most British rock LP's I listen to from the '60s (a tube recording, usually mixed to mono with tons of compression). There is the stereo mix, but the band was focused more on the mono mix and that's what I listen to. I haven't heard the stereo mix in ages because I had an immediate preference for the mono mix.

Arthur is the first album where they really focused on the stereo mix, and it shows - it's an excellent stereo mix. (There is a mono mix, but IIRC it's just a fold down for promos.)

birdistheword, Thursday, 17 August 2023 21:09 (two years ago)

I think the mix on Village Green Preservation Society might suffer from the era of switching from mono to stereo. The mono version of the record sounds fine, except for the songs recorded late in the process like "Big Sky", which have a cramped feel from trying to cram in too many separate sounds. Meanwhile, the stereo mix has a lot of eccentric decisions about panning that would get smoothed out only a year later, as "the rules" of stereo sound were codified.
Apparently "Johnny Thunder" is the only multi-track tape still left from the sessions; there seem to be at least two later remixes, as this one does not sound like the one I have on the deluxe reissue, but see how you feel about the sound on this:

actually think Muswell Hillbillies is the worst produced Kinks LP

Ray insisted they record with vintage microphones for that dusty feeling.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 17 August 2023 21:14 (two years ago)

Yeah, and it reminds me of S.F. Sorrow just in terms of sonics; it’s definitely of its time. It sounds like there were a few bounce-downs from one 4-track to another, resulting in a lack of top end most noticeably on the drums. I know the Beatles used that technique too without it sounding like VGPS, but they were exponentially more concerned with, and involved in, the production of their records than anyone in the Kinks, Ray included.

Production always seemed to be an afterthought with Ray, and I can’t think of another band of their era that would’ve benefited more from an outside producer. The only Kinks record where the production stands out (in a good way) is Give The People What They Want, which was apparently the blueprint for Albini’s approach to miking drums.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 17 August 2023 22:04 (two years ago)

Reminds me that I am thinking of ponying up and Patreoning Andrew Hickey for the SF Sorrow bonus episode.

Blecch on Blecch (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 17 August 2023 22:08 (two years ago)

The Beatles were allowed as much time and money as they wanted to record their music, that certainly was not the case for the Kinks.

Monthly Python (Tom D.), Thursday, 17 August 2023 22:13 (two years ago)

That’s a good point, but other bands of roughly the Kinks’ stature at the time — say, the Zombies, or Manfred Mann — made much clearer-sounding records than VGPS.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Thursday, 17 August 2023 22:20 (two years ago)

I blame Shel Talmy

(I love this record and have never noticed anything weird sounding abt it)

(original US stereo LP version with the killer "Wicked Annabella")

can't really compare anyone to the Beatles, particularly when it comes to records made before 1968 or so, they kinda all sound shitty but that may or may not be part of the charm

frogbs, Thursday, 17 August 2023 22:33 (two years ago)

yeah all those early Beatles albums should all be remixed by Steve Wilson

brimstead, Thursday, 17 August 2023 22:35 (two years ago)

honestly I wouldn't mind seeing him give it a go

frogbs, Thursday, 17 August 2023 22:36 (two years ago)

Somebody should check to see what he’s posted about this on social media.

Blecch on Blecch (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 17 August 2023 22:43 (two years ago)

haha probably something about the mic placement

so otm, as are the preceding posts re: production. this has always bothered me, even though i've learned to love the records dearly in my own way. it's a shame, such a shame

budo jeru, Thursday, 17 August 2023 23:11 (two years ago)

I got the ridiculously big "Muswell/Showbiz" box for ridiculously cheap from the official kinks website.

I don't hear any production issues, although there must have been some as "Rays Remixes" are all over it.

Mark G, Friday, 18 August 2023 05:55 (two years ago)

VGPS is definitely a murky sounding album. They did all their early albums at Pye (Downtown, In the Summertime). When they switched studios for Lola Vs Powerman.... holy shit, what a quantum leap in sound quality.

Totally agree that VGPS shares sonics with SF Sorrow (done at Abbey Road, though...)

Reeves Gabrels' Funko Pop (majorairbro), Friday, 18 August 2023 08:44 (two years ago)

(done at Abbey Road, though...)

And produced by Norman Smith! Leaving aside his Beatles track record, Sorrow doesn’t even have the clarity of Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 18 August 2023 12:04 (two years ago)

Oh Ray, what would you say?
