Who are the least intelligent musicians?

I was influenced to start this thread after finally getting hold of the "Live Forever" movie. The Gallaghers are supposedly ace there and, well, Noel is great and actually contributes a lot of sensible comments. But Liam appears as even more stupid than I thought he is. I mean, like that part when he was confronted with being androgynous and doesn't have a "fooking" clue about what that word means.

So, who are the stupidest musicians ever? Obviously, Liam Gallagher is a very serious contender.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:04 (eighteen years ago)

Drummer of Gay Dad.

ian, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:07 (eighteen years ago)

I would nominate most of the bands from "The Decline of Western Civilization: The metal years"...

swinburningforyou, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:09 (eighteen years ago)

Drummer of Rough Cutt, going by his interview segment on the b-side of that Hear'n'Aid charity single from the 80s sometime.

Matt #2, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

to add to what i said, i don't mean ozzy, alice cooper, kiss necessarily, but bands like London and Lizzy Borden

It was the fearful night of December 8th.
He was returning home from the studio late.
He had perseptively known that it wouldn't be nice.
Because in 1980, he paid the price.

John Lennon died. [X6]

With a Smith & Wesson 38,
John Lennon's life was no longer a debate.
He should have stayed at home,
He should have never cared,
And the man who took his life declared,

He said I just shot John Lennon.
He said I just shot John Lennon.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.

Ah, ah ah ah, ah...

I just shot John Lennon.
He said I just shot John Lennon.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.
What a sad and sorry and sickening sight.
What a sad and sorry and sickening night.

Ah, ah ah ah, ah...

Who will save the war child baby?
Who controls the key?
The web we weave is thick and sordid,
Fine by me.

At times of war we're all the losers,
There's no victory.
We shoot to kill and kill your lover,
Fine by me.

War child, victim of political pride.
Plant the seed, territorial greed.
Mind the war child,
We should mind the war child.

I spent last winter in New York,
And came upon a man.
He was sleeping on the streets and homeless,
He said, "I fought in Vietnam."

Beneath his shirt he wore the mark,
He bore the mark with pride.
A two inch deep incision carved,
Into his side.

War child, victim of political pride.
Plant the seed, territorial greed.
Mind the war child,
We should mind the war child.

Who's the loser now? Who's the loser now?
We're all the losers now. We're all the losers now.

War child. [X2]

I would like to state my vision,
Life was so unfair.
We live in our secure surroundings,
And people die out there.

Bosnia was so unkind.
Sarajevo changed my mind.
And we all call out in despair.
All the love we need isn't there.
And we all sing songs in our room.
Sarajevo erects another doom.

Sarajevo, Sarajevo, Sarajevo, Sarajevo.
Bosnia was so unkind.
Sarajevo, Sarajevo, Saraje-
Bosnia was so unkind.

Sure things would change if we really wanted them to.
No fear for children anymore.
There are babies in their beds,
Terror in their heads,
Love for the love of life.

When do the saints go marching in? [X4]
Walk on tip toe...

We'd better think about the things we say
We'd better think about the games we play
The world went round, around and round

We'd better think about the consequences
We'd better think about the global senses
The time went out, the time went out

What about Chernobyl?
What about radiation?
We don't know, we don't know

What about deprivation?
Gluttony, the human nation?
We don't know, we don't know
For me love is all, for me love is all
For me love is all, for me love is all

Time is ticking out

Looks like we screwed up the ozone layer
I wonder if the politicians care
And time went out, and time went out

What about our children then?
Is there nothing left for them?
We don't know, we don't know
For me love is all, for me love is all
For me love is all, for me love is all
Ahh they need oxygen, ahh they need oxygen
For me love is all, for me love is all
For me love is all, for me love is all

Time is ticking out yeah
The time is ticking out

What's great about Dolores is that no matter how stupid your parody is, the real lyrics are funnier.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

There is a strong case for her being objectively the worst lyricist of all time.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, I'd have to agree. Mitigating factor: no whale hearbeats

Joe threw another tantrum
He could not to be understood
He cries like baby Samson
His English is not good

Joe's boss of the kitchen
But on the outside he knows
Low man on the totem's
Wearing giveaway clothes

Joe he fights the good fight
He wears a white uniform
The waiters are all artists
Out chasing unicorns

Joe works fourteen hours
After ten he starts to booze
He gets very sentimental
Oh he sings the buddah blues
He sings the buddah blues
My name Joe my name Joe
There is a king in Thailand
And he plays the jazz drum
He has a fine and healthy son
Oh no I'm not the one
My name Joe
On the wall by the time clock
Joe's beaming from a photograph
Someone drew across his face
The waiters began to laugh

Joe picked up a hatchet
And he tenderized the wall
And when he got through
Time clock wasn't punching anymore

The waiters ran for cover
The maitre d' began to lisp
The drunkard in the corner
Said his lettuce was not crisp

Owner called immigration
Said there's someone you should know
He's an illegal alien
And I think his name is Joe
Oh I know his name is Joe
My name Joe my name Joe
There is a king in Thailand
And he plays the jazz drum
He has a fine and healthy son
Oh no I'm not the one
My name Joe
Came the man from immigration
Said I've got a job to do
Easy questions easy answers
Just point me to the kitchen crew

He asked Leroy from Harlem
He asked Cisco from Mexico
He asked the white trash from Tennessee
That all said my name Joe

My name Joe my name Joe
The maitre d' he sputtered
The kitchen crew they roared
And while they were arguing
Joe slipped out the back door

On the beach Joe tries to listen
To the heartbeat of a whale
How it echoes his own heartbeat
And the distance he has sailed
Oh the distance he has sailed
My name Joe my name Joe
There is a king in Thailand
And he plays the jazz drum
He has a fine and healthy son
Oh no I'm not the one
My name Joe

yeah, thats true, but that doesn't necessarily make her stupid, does it? and gene simmons, he might be a dick, but he doesn't strike me as particularly dumb either.

Phil Anselmo, on the other hand...

Geir actually OTM!

DW: Ricky Gervais told me there's a story that Liam thinks Spinal Tap are a real band. Is that true?

NG: Yeah, he thought they were real people. We went to see them play in Carnegie Hall. Before they played, they came on as three folk singers from the film A Mighty Wind. We were laughing and he said: 'This is shit'. We said: 'No, those three are in Spinal Tap. You do know they are American actors?' 'They're not even a real band?' 'They're not even English! One of them is married to Jamie Lee Curtis.' 'I'm not fuckin' 'avin that,' he says, and walks off right up the middle of Carnegie Hall. He's never watched Spinal Tap since. He'd seen the film and loved it and thought they were a real band.

swinburningforyou, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, liam comes across pretty thick, there. but, i don't believe that he's really so stupid at all. i think that he just has a warped sense of what a cool way to project yourself onto the media is, that's all. beneath that, he's probably not so dim.

Glenn Danzig. I seriously love the guys music, but when he opens his mouth, if it isn't for singing, it isn't worth listening to.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 02:53 (eighteen years ago)

right about danzig. if it weren't for things that i've read that he's said in interviews and such, i'd probably love his music. but, i just can't get past what a turd he is. (me not being able to get past what a turd danzig is and to the music is my own personal, stupid hang-up, i know).

andi, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

Good call on Danzig. Also, Paul Stanley. He's so...vacant? He reminds me of Miss America contestants, like talking and thinking are chores for him.

VegemiteGrrrl, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

I think part of the dilemma here is that the genuinely dim don't seek the spotlight- they live in fear of being put on the spot. So we're stuck combing through those with enough savvy to garner attention, yet look asinine in the process. We're cataloging the drug-addled, the willfully ignorant, and those with delusions of wisdom. Do those count as lack of intelligence? I dunno.

Mr. Snrub, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:57 (eighteen years ago)

Bob Stinson a good example, but he ends up being more of an idiot-savant than conventionally unintelligent. Also, because he was an instrumentalist and not a vocalist/lyricist, he hasn't left us with any looseleaf poetry to stare agape at.

Lyrics ought not be a criteria though. For instance, the dude from the Offspring is one of the worst lyricists I've ever heard - yet, isn't he like a biophysicist or brain surgeon or something?

Conversely, Dylan - a stone cold genius - has written some howlers that could almost pass for O'Riordianesque

WTF ILX

I wish my friends were as "dumb" as millionaire poets instead of being the "smart" guys playing Halo 3 and complaining that they haven't found the right job to go with the degree they got from a liberal arts college six years ago.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 07:47 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think becoming a millionaire rapper automatically means you're super intelligent (you could just have smart background people) though, or do you think all successful musicians are smart?

Tuomas, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 07:51 (eighteen years ago)

I think Kanye and 50 Cent specifically are pretty fucking smart guys

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 07:54 (eighteen years ago)

But fuck it. Yes. If you're a successful rapper, you have to be smart.

Anyone who is a successful rapper who has a background steeped in some sort of underground (mixtapes, battles, myspace, car-trunk hustle, self-run label) has to, by definition, be good with words to get heard. To be deft enough with the language to keep people engaged, to surprise a jaded audience, to paint vivid pictures that make people relate to you.

How's an idiot going to do any of those things?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 08:01 (eighteen years ago)

yes yes 50 cent & kanye are clever & very good businessmen. i think calling either of them "poets" though is one fuck of a stretch.

zappi, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 08:05 (eighteen years ago)

Especially the part where they attempt to procure an emotional response by working rhyming words into rhythmic patterns.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 08:16 (eighteen years ago)

rikki rocket is pretty smart

chaki, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 08:28 (eighteen years ago)

But you could also say that an idiot couldn't possibly develop the dexterity and coordination necessary for being a skilled guitar/bass/drums player, not to mention having the perseverance and discipline necessary for practicing for years and reaching that level of ability, and yet, many idiots do manage to do that.

Being skilled at one thing doesn't mean you're not an idiot in general.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 08:31 (eighteen years ago)

Dolores O'Riordan attempts to procure an emotional response by working rhyming words into rhythmic patterns too. doesn't make her a "poet" either.

Talking about stupid pop stars is fun in the same way that talking about thick/ugly footballers is, and I'm not sure 50 Cent really needs someone coming in all Capn Save-A-Millionaire-Rapper.

By all reports the answer to this is actually Rihanna.

Mark G, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

Rihanna comes across a bit humourless in TV interviews, I don't know if that's cos she's not bright or what.

But to reiterate my pleas for Dolores: not only did she write those lyrics, but she was proud enough of them to record them and put them out there for the world to enjoy. If Alexander Pope was alive he could write a whole new Dunciad just for rock stars, and I know who'd be the Muse.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 10:20 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, wow, I remember the collective jaw dropping when that Cranberries album came out.

Not only did it hold itself up to ridicue, but you look back at songs that go "Oh my dreams, are never quite what it seems" and realise they weren't meant as simplicity of emotion, more plain simple.

Jack Burton, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

Dee Dee? Naah, watch the "End of the Century" film, he's pretty damn smart in that one.

Mark G, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I said I didn't necessarily believe it myself. I just threw it out there because he had that reputation. They didn't want him speaking in interviews because he wasn't helping to dispel the notion that the Ramones were just a bunch of pinheads (I think they mentioned that in the film).

Jack Burton, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

Matt #2, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 12:46 (eighteen years ago)

What's sad about Britney is that she seems to think of herself as a self-styled provocateur like Madonna, when she had a lot of people helping her get set up in that role. It's the same sort of "born on third base, thinks he hit a homer" situation that make GWB look dumb. Rappers can seem kinda dumb in their self-aggrandizing, but most of them bootstrapped themselves at least half way. The bragging is a bit more justified. When the privileged go on about the hard knocks they've endured, and the insights they've gained from their petty struggles, the ungratefulness sure comes across like stupidity.

bendy, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 12:48 (eighteen years ago)

Being an asshole (i.e. G. Simmons, G. Danzig) and being stupid are two different things. Now, being a stupid asshole (Liam Gallagher).... that's something else entirely.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

Dee Dee was a drug addict, that automatically erases a few IQ points if you do it long enough. He often seems very perceptive in "Please Kill Me". Granted, with all the junkie hi-jinks in that book, he didn't have to try too hard. Now Johnny Thunders always seemed a bit dim. There again, it could be the all the chemicals sloshing around his bloodstream.

I think Dee Dee and the reat of the Ramones, like Iggy, were smart guys playing dumb.

leavethecapital, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

Dee Dee wrote the funniest of their lyrics, didn't he? Dumb people aren't funny.

He just restates the obvious without any glimmer of insight or any indication that he's thought about what he's saying. When Noel Gallagher comes off as more witty, there's a problem.

Sara Sara Sara, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 15:39 (eighteen years ago)

provocateur like Madonna, when she had a lot of people helping her get set up in that role.

So? And Madonna didn't?

xhuxk, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

When the privileged go on about the hard knocks they've endured, and the insights they've gained from their petty struggles, the ungratefulness sure comes across like stupidity.

And how doesn't that include at least, like, 95 percent of rock stars who ever existed? How is Britney unique in this?

xhuxk, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

OTM xhuxk

and i've always thought of Noel Gallagher as pretty smart, and fairly witty anyway. Doesn't mean he doesn't have some truly cringe inducing songs

swinburningforyou, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 15:47 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't seen that Who doc, but I have to totally disagree about Eddie Vedder. He's come across quite well-spoken and intelligent in many of his interviews, even if his politics can get a little annoying.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 15:50 (eighteen years ago)

There's a story in Our Band Could Be Your Life about a Mudhoney interview. Mark Arm says, "unless you're omniscient, you're going to be prejudiced of something." Dan Peters replies, "But even Amish people are prejudiced." Dan didn't do many interviews after that (although Arm doesn't acquit himself with the "prejudiced of something" line).

GG Allin seemed pretty dim. His "poetry" makes the case even more than his song lyrics and stage presence.

mike a, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

Nas seems smart, but his "Rockefeller had AIDS, that was the end of his chapter" is just ignorant.

mike a, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

dave gahan

He says a lot of sensible stuff in the documentaries on the new re-releases. Doesn't seem extremely stupid to me although obviously heroin isn't healthy.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

I seem to remember a vague rumor about some punk band's drummer being illiterate, but I can't remember who it was about: Replacements? Mudhoney? (not necessarily one of those two)

StanM, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

Vivien Trimble of Luscious Jackson
I don't know about Vivian, but Gabby used to tend bar at the Radio Bar and she always seemed pretty bright.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

So? And Madonna didn't?
I'm sure both have big staffs. But I get the vibe that until recently, Spears just sort of read a script and acted it out. Whereas Madonna was writing and acting her script, co-producing at times. I feel like Spears wasn't in charge of her image in the same way as Madonna. And that she's trying to do that now, and it's not exactly working out.

I've got no idea how much pop stars' "controversal" moves get market researched and pre-approved for press consumption. Maybe I'm just reciting a PR-approved storyline in both of these cases.

But yeah, the petty struggle thing applies to almost anyone who's had the spotlight. I hope Barbara Walters interviews Axl Rose if Chinese Democracy ever sees the light of day.

bendy, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Madonna has also been co-writing most of her material.

And "It Used To Be My Playground", written with Shep Pettibone, has a lot of melodic and harmonic similarities with her 80s ballads written with Pat Leonard, so she must have provided something and isn't credited only to make her appear more of an artistic contributor than she is.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Rihanna comes across a bit humourless in TV interviews, I don't know if that's cos she's not bright or what

i read somewhere, but i genuinely can't remember where, that yeh, she's far from smart. i can't help feeling it was some popworld type who said so.

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

I interviewed Rihanna and she seemed bright and funny enough to me.

I think judging people's intelligence from random interview clips isn't fair. People are misquoted or clipped out of context all the time - plus most normal people get nervous and jittery when they're interviewed on camera and they say some weird shit. On the other hand, people who get interviewed all the fucking time are bound to say something stupid eventually. Doesn't make 'em dumb, or any dumber than the rest of us anyway. Also sarcasm & attempted jokes often fall flat on the page/screen - which is what I would imagine that Mudhoney Amish thing is. People trying to be bad ass also come off as dumb.

fritz, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

good, i'd far rather think of her as bright and funny! i shall remember what you said, fritz, and forget the bit i've already half-forgotten :)

grimly fiendish, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

Especially the part where they attempt to procure an emotional response by working rhyming words into rhythmic patterns.

There’s been a lot of talk about your 15-string bass, which is an extremely impressive-looking instrument. Did Ibanez approach you with the idea of making it?

I actually approached them with the idea because I already played 5 strings. So I figured that when you have a 5-string bass or something, each string is just 3 strings and that would make it 15 strings – 3 on each. I talked to them and they said that they didn’t think anybody has ever done that in the history of music. So I thought, “Well, make me one then!” So they put it together and made me one. I can’t wait. I’ve got to try and fit it in somewhere. Everyone’s asking about it, so I’m going to have to play it on the next Korn album.

How did it feel the first time you sat down with the 15-string?

When I sat down with it, it was really like powerful and heavy. I don’t know. It just sounds so mean. At the same time, you can make it sound pretty, too. It’s kind of weird. I might have a mean-pretty song!

Avril doesn't seem to bright

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

Madonna has also been co-writing most of her material.

Again, so? Madonna's obviously a pretty smart cookie, but this obviously has absolutely zilch to do with how smart performers are. (Some performers would seem a lot smarter if they used more outside writers.)

I had thought about nominating GG Allin myself. (Billy Milano, too, though I honestly have no idea how smart or dumb he really is. He could be a genius, for all I know. And I'm not even sure I could cite anymore whatever used to convince me he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed. Is "dumb" and "dumbass" the same thing?)

xhuxk, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

I can't make my mind up if she's irritated, or thick, or whatever in this clip:

Avril Lavigne on Popworld

Alex Zane is a prick though, maybe that's got something to do with it.

don't get me started on pete doherty again, please!
i almost linked to that video of him queuing for an oasis album earlier, actually.
he's a bit of an immature fuck-up, obviously, but i don't think it means that he's actually very unintelligent or anything. . .
i'll start holding back on pete, now.

andi, Thursday, 22 November 2007 12:13 (eighteen years ago)

Pete Doherty is a great songwriter, which suggests there must be something there inside his head after all.

The same thing applies with Michael Jackson, who might otherwise also seem a contender.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 22 November 2007 13:31 (eighteen years ago)

He isn't a great songwriter Geir, your standards are slipping!

Tom D., Thursday, 22 November 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

that's mostly just a matter of taste. i really feel "fuck forever" is an undeniably great song, though.

Don't know that he was "dumb", but Euronymous's IQ probably didn't fluctuate much after death

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Thursday, 22 November 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

Euronymous didn't seem very stupid to me (His brother was in my high school class, so I'm not totally ignorant here). Varg Vikernes doesn't seem particularly bright though.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 23 November 2007 00:55 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno, I think Euronymous tended to miss "irony" judging from some interviews--but then again, I never met the guy, so I can't judge for sure.

Varg Vikernes is now just nothing more than a media whore.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 23 November 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

Satanists are taking themselves way too seriously to be able to understand irony.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 23 November 2007 01:01 (eighteen years ago)

Billy Milano, on the other hand...

God yeah, he is a thick piece of shit. Check out what he said on metal sludge about Scott Ian.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 23 November 2007 01:08 (eighteen years ago)

His comments about Serj Tankyan a few years back were also humorous.

His comments kind of damaged my viewpoint of Speak English or Die, as the lyrics no longer felt like tongue-in-cheek political incorrectness. But I still love it anyway.

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Friday, 23 November 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

Surely a band with Phil Anselmo and Billy Milano will happen one day.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 23 November 2007 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

They'd have to hire two additional stage hands just to hand them the mics while they stumble around on stage, intoxicated...
