early days yet, info-wise

StanM, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 10:21 (seventeen years ago)

03/03/2008, apparently.

StanM, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 10:23 (seventeen years ago)

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

ledge, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 11:49 (seventeen years ago)

Perhaps this will be the folk album they have always had it in them to make

Telephone thing, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 17:06 (seventeen years ago)

lol

I think all their albums are secretly folk, but you don't notice since they're using the wrong instruments.

StanM, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

It will be full of bleeps and blips. Reviewers will give it an above-average review for being intelligent, while yearning for the old days when Autechre used to write tunes. Thom Yorke will base his 2009 solo album on it.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 4 December 2007 23:42 (seventeen years ago)

Autechre will discover the true meaning of atonality when they construct bloops and beeps that follow an inotation nearer to that of pure (natural) intervals, which is closely tied traditionally to tonal feeling, the sense of key. To the untrained ear you wont know what the fuck you are listening to, but it is really folk of the orient applied to synthetic sound. Imagine an autecherean gamelan.

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 03:45 (seventeen years ago)

Album title sounds like an Onion parody of an Ae album title.

Disappointed they seemed to give up on their thing of having one or two "companion" EPs per LP.

Oh shit, why am I even bothering to look foraward to this? (I mean, I am, a LOT, but I know it's going to be yet another shove further up the rectal passage of DSP egowank)

the next grozart, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 11:48 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I'm confused by the fact that there are still fans of this band.
I mean they let you download max/msp yourself and try it for 30 days.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

Could you come up with this patch in 30 days!? (Hey maybe you could, I dunno, it's all Greek to me.)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/72/Autechremax.jpg

ledge, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

Also, anyone can play guitar.

ledge, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

does that patch sound like anything anybody wants to pay to listen to, is the more important question, or at least I thought so

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

I'm perfectly willing to buy this, btw, if it's awesome, I don't hate the players, I hate the game.

if you count EPs + LPs this is autechre's 18th solo release

03/03/08 => 3x3+8 => 9+8 = 17

coincidence? i think not.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

quaristice = quarantine + armistice

autechre's response to "the rising"

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 18:37 (seventeen years ago)

the max/msp argument is pretty dumb. i mean, there's any number of ways to generate algorithmic music (with max/msp even), and lots of it doesn't sound at all like autechre (who, as far as i understand it, only partially incorporate generative stuff in their compositions).

jermainetwo, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

the first thing i thought was solstice which is twice a year, but they've munged it to be quarterly or maybe it was recorded around four solstice points over the past two years. how long has it been since the last lp?

xpost, exactly, you can do algorithmic composition by splicing analog tape if you want

tricky, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 19:04 (seventeen years ago)

Some lizard part of my brain is conditioned to associate Autechre with potential brain-busting new hotness, but the rational part says that's all in the past.

nah they are still awes

chaki, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 19:40 (seventeen years ago)

Trayce, did your bf pull the trick yet? Im listening to the first track supposedly - Anterior - it's 11:25. It might be real I dunno. I don't have time to listen atm, I gotta study for finals.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

but it does sound like they are going back to their roots a bit.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 14 December 2007 02:40 (seventeen years ago)

I don't have time to listen atm, I gotta study for finals.

Next time someone asks me to define Autechre I will say this.

Autumn Almanac, Friday, 14 December 2007 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

Anterior - I hope this isn't real. That is the chintziest melody EVER. I guess it improves at around 6:33 w/the more detailed interplay of pulses, but I dunno. I hope this is fake

Lowell N. Behold'n, Friday, 14 December 2007 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

Well the tracklist put forth on this site doesn't mention any "Anterior." Note the number of 9s that appear in the song names.

Leee, Friday, 14 December 2007 06:03 (seventeen years ago)

I'm afraid its nowt to do with me! Unless R's been up to shit I dont know about.

Trayce, Friday, 14 December 2007 06:28 (seventeen years ago)

This Anterior track (which is quite long, and I wouldnt ezpect it to be so long with the amount of tracks supposed to be on the album) seems "chinzy" in the sense that it is lacking all the modulation expected from the sounds I'm hearing. But compared to Vi Scose Poise of confield, maybe it isn't lacking as much as I think. Overall, it sounds like IDM my friend makes so I don't think it's real. And it doesn't have any epic quality to it.

CaptainLorax, Friday, 14 December 2007 08:33 (seventeen years ago)

The first half of "quaristice" sounds related to either "square" or "four", and 9 is a square number. Or, it's a double album, 9 is twice 4.5, and 4.5 is (the midpoint of) the interstice between four (and five). Or or, I'm making complete rubbish up. Yeah, that last one.

(Why have none of my IDM nerd internet pals who've been so excited about the last few while I've been going "eh" said anything about this? Are ae finally over even among the DSP-spotting community?)

Remember that show from The Wire in which three tracks were played?

It's gone now but the internets don't forget.

The promo copies are watermarked hence traceable to the source, so i wouldn't expect leaks anytime soon.

Brakhage, Sunday, 27 January 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

^ Thanks for the link.

I'm a little disappointed, though, at least upon first listen. Only the final track really grabbed me. All three seemed drenched in reverb, which normally I don't mind, and certainly isn't foreign to Autechre's music, but seemed out of place here. I guess those who were put off by their algorithm-centric compositions from the past decade or so might like this, as it's more stripped down and less wacked out. The problem is that they didn't really replace that space with anything compelling.

Z S, Sunday, 27 January 2008 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

slightly off topic, but does anyone have that internet dj mix autechre did a few years ago? heard a bit of it at the time and remember it being incredible.

Crackle Box, Monday, 28 January 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

hmm, google reveals they did lots of mixes a couple of years ago, the one i heard had miuzi weighs a ton on it.

That was my first reaction as well … though to give them a break, I usually have to hear what they do with a very high bitrate to really get all the sonic details, and it also takes me a year to 'get' what they're doing – I didn't appreciate Untilted until recently.

This kind of judgment on first listening to lowbitrate samples is what the group itself is anxious to avoid I'd imagine.

True. When I was listening to it I kept daydreaming about the DJ saying "Whoops, somehow I was sitting on the reverb button! This is what the songs really sound like, sorry!", and then playing them again. I'll still give it a fair shot when it comes out. I probably need to revisit Untilted. I only gave it about a month before I gave up.

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

i'm really liking those tracks in the Wire stream, the reverb stuff sounds great on them, kind of dubby. the stream made me more excited about the album.

Mark Clemente, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

Limited edition double CD eh? Sold! (For £30! And to think I laughed at those Radiohead fans shelling out £40 for the box set.)

judging from bleep samples, "perlence" is their response to dubstep

jermainetwo, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

and "chenc9" could be the tuss.

jermainetwo, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)

It's weird - it's like they're taking a step back (reintroduction of apparent simplicity and melody) and one forward (order in the chaos they'd built up until now) at the same time - if that makes any sense. Think I'm going to like this, but then I like pretty much everything they've done.

StanM, Tuesday, 29 January 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

Here I was ready to write them off. Based on the Beeb and Wire exclusives, I'm excited that they've finally ditched the super-compressed Draft sound.

the last three autechre albums have taken ages to sink in for me, but that's not necessarily a bad thing and once i lived with them long enough they were/are very rewarding listens especially untilted. the first listen to this reminded me of parts of chiastic slide a bit.

tricky, Saturday, 2 February 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

They essentially slag off the limited edition release in their Clash interview http://www.clashmusic.com/feature/autechre-quaristice;

It makes no odds to me. Actually, it does; I’d prefer (people) to download it than buy it physically. It fits our agenda much better that way. Our plan has never been to produce CDs - it’s always been about making music. If there’s a way of charging for it and getting the content to people, then we’ll adopt whichever is the most transparent. The actual product is the FLAC file – but I don’t object to those who want to own something that they can hold”

Kiff, Sunday, 10 February 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)

i don't see how they're addressing the ltd 2cd release, just the usual physical format vs. digital file debate...

"fwZe" is so sweet, I love their new short attention span policy

Drew Daniel, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

yeah after three albums in a row mostly featuring 5-7 minute long gradually evolving tracks, just fausting together 60 minutes worth of snippets seems like a good way to go

the board recording mp3 of the 2005 glasgow show is great. basically the same set I saw in SF at mezzanine, far more straightforward & clubby than anything they put on albums (though the acid numbers on this new one come close)

Milton Parker, Monday, 11 February 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)

ledge - thanks for the upload.

To those still hoping for a return to the old Autechre sound:

I have just settled down and listened to Incunabula and Amber and realized, in retrospect, how cheesy they were, and how contrasted our newer ideas are. Even though I might still think we're still banging out big riffs and big beats and whatever sort of cinematic, cheesy moments, you just realize that you're too close.

I tend to agree with his assessment, although I'm sure many people would think him loony for saying such a thing.

Z S, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)

skimmed thru this on bleep. first track is nice, simm begins really well but loses it a bit for me. the only other thing i like is bnc castl - the temptation to stick a massive kickdrum under it is proving great.

cool.

Still figuring out this album. May take some time. One thought: bnc castl reminds me of Are People People - the insane Adrian Sherwood "mix" of People are People by Depeche Mode.

there's a mix for MAH on Radio 1 tuesday night too.

I only listened to the first hour or two, which was pretty much solid hip-hip/electro. Tuned in a while later to hear the somewhat obscure early Depeche Mode b-side "Now This Is Fun", which they also played on their 2005 webcast.

If whatever I've downloaded here is the new Autechre album, I'm very happy with it - but doesn't it sound different from everything else? Here I was, waiting for another bunch of ever-randomising clunkjams and here is something that's actually a lot of fun!

the next grozart, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

haha, their myspace site looks totally fucked, but because it's autechre i can't tell if it's intentional or just normal myspace bullshit.

Jordan, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 23:26 (seventeen years ago)

So the london gig was night was in a fucking car park. Roofed but a bit short on walls, only about half a dozen coats were in the cloakroom, it was so cold. And the bar didn't take cash, you had to buy tokens... which were sold in blocks of £10 minimum. Massive cuntitude. And no re-entry, which scuppered my plan of nipping out to a local boozer till they came on at 12.30am.

ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:10 (seventeen years ago)

were they any good, though?

toby, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:16 (seventeen years ago)

The Guardian wasn't very impressed with their Newcastle show: http://music.guardian.co.uk/live/story/0,,2261916,00.html

onimo, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:18 (seventeen years ago)

They weren't as headfucky as that review suggests. If you've seen them any time over the last ten years then they were pretty much the same, which is fine if you like that kind of thing. And I do. Really excellent rhythms, it felt like they'd invented half a dozen on the spot, never heard before and never to be heard again. Weird noises and screeches yes, but they rarely destroyed the groove. And definite old-skool ae melodies, strings and glockenspiels, bubbling underneath. Virtually all new as far as I could tell, only recognised a couple of melodic snippets from Quaristice.

Did start to feel a leeeedle bit samey about halfway through though.

ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:23 (seventeen years ago)

LOLs at ADM talk in Guardian review. Welcome to the 90s son.

Also LOLs at "their own music is scrambled and mashed-up beyond recognition. Vaguely danceable rhythms are suddenly destroyed by sonic screeches" coz everyone there was wanting the straight four to the floor of their last few LPs I guess.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:26 (seventeen years ago)

Ooops, IDM not ADM. Dunno what ADM is--Autistic Dance Music I suppose.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:27 (seventeen years ago)

ah but live cough idm cough, even ae, always has been more four to the floor and danceable than the records (which always led me to wonder exactly what records they were playing and how could i get them. never did figure it out.)

Support from Rob Hall (standard IDM dj set, see above) and SND, who played... just beats. No melodies. Virtually devoid of interesting rhythms, even. It reminded me of the standard complaints about ae - cold, abstract - but this lacked any of their complexity, it was totally transparent. Didn't do it for me at all.

ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

A good gig I think - I was entirely sober and yet completely lost track of time - seemed to last about five minutes, and I don't think I fell asleep. The wall of bass did get a bit much at times - submerged almost everything else. And yes, quite chilly. And a lot of people there could have done with a more recent bath or change of clothes.

Kaliova, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:39 (seventeen years ago)

toby, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

"ah but live cough idm cough, even ae, always has been more four to the floor and danceable than the records."

Not when I've seen 'em really.

Raw Patrick, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:44 (seventeen years ago)

no wai! i set my alarm for an hour later 'cause i needed a bit more sleep after the gig, or i'd have heard that, and probably would have freaked me right out. now i'll have to install realplayer, hmph.

xp. well maybe not four to the floor as such, but more consistent and more danceable. imho i guess.

ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 13:54 (seventeen years ago)

The .ram file isn't actually what was broadcast, it's an extended version of the interview - the bit on the radio was shorter but had vox pops from last night etc.

toby, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)

"Tell us some of the more unusual sound effects you've used and what happens to them next"

"No"

koogs, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Not when I've seen 'em really.

There was a fair bit to get down to when I saw them circa the last album, and the new one has some straight passages of electro-y stuff that I don't think people could consider onjectionably undanceable. Also not being a dick but I can't think of when Dave Simpson has ever expressed an interest in dance music (but I don't maintain davesimpson.xls or owt)

DJ Mencap, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

The first part of that extended version is awful, just clueless and irrelevant questions. She can't even pronounce the album names right!

xp to koogs yeah that was lol.

ledge, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 14:25 (seventeen years ago)

If anyone wants to Listen Again to the short-form Ae interview on the Today prog itself, it starts around 7:42am (i.e. 1h42m into the clip).

Definitely more enjoyable than listening to them in the dark.

I liked bits of the limited edition CD all right, some of the pieces sound better when allowed to wander all over the place to their natural improv endings instead of being clipped off. but there's a lot of overlap & the obvious point of this whole casually-edited pile-of-tracks project is to force us to do our own editing

this band has always made such beautiful albums that I love listening to all the way through, but I shouldn't have even bothered with the physical version of this one, it's inherently an ipod project

Milton Parker, Monday, 12 May 2008 20:03 (seventeen years ago)

First track The Plc ccc up on bleep now.

nice & minimal, that first remix

StanM, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:44 (seventeen years ago)

4 days later, 4 tracks downloaded (33 minutes) and at the moment, IMHO:

new remixes >>> versions disc >>> original album

StanM, Thursday, 22 May 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm listening to the new remixes most too. Track 3 very very dark. A poster noted on WATMM that the first track PLC ccc is a chopped and screwed version of the Quaristice track.

Unfortunately most of the other posters there are sulking that they are not getting a live soundboard recording that they feel they as fans are entitled to, and as a result trashing this release in a fit of pique. Knobbers.

This is great, far less oblique but still very mindfuckingly them. Insiduous and great. Hussar!

I like that... insidious. I could usually hang with the dissonant nervous freaky shit from the last couple of records that would clear out any room, but this is different than that. It's oogy. It makes me feel unwell.

kenan, Thursday, 22 May 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

That's praise, btw.

kenan, Thursday, 22 May 2008 20:23 (seventeen years ago)

This almost seems like too many tracks to deal with. Tracing sonic similarities, trying to figure out likes and dislikes... I feel like I'm studying for an exam.

ledge, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

But yes, more like Perlence Suns plz.

ledge, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:54 (seventeen years ago)

I also <3 <3 <3 Altichyre off Versions, that is some seriously affecting minimalism.

4

and should be averaging around 35 mins each, Perlence subrange 6-36 is going to be interesting as the longest track they've released.

there's also a japan itunes store exclusive ep that came out last month.

Trayce, Friday, 23 May 2008 11:33 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't posted on there for years because I lost my password, so now I just occasionally lurk, and get riled by the fanboys.

There are folk on there that seem to take it as a personal insult that one of their favourite bands are releasing a large amount of new material, extremely cheaply, that they are under no obligation to purchase.

I am using your worlds, Friday, 23 May 2008 12:42 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

can someone give me the lowdown on what autechre has done since the first 20 quaristice tracks were released. remixes/eps whatever. i listened to quaristice once or twice and decided not to buy it but my curiosity is making me want to give them a listen again. maybe the album is more complex/rewarding/emotional than I thought. [insert some other adjective that I meant to say]

CaptainLorax, Monday, 7 July 2008 01:50 (sixteen years ago)

they've been writing a concept album about you called lorax45%-hhy

also, they've taken up residence under your bed. THE ALBUM IS COMING FRROM INSIDE THE HOUSE

latebloomer, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:03 (sixteen years ago)

no
I heard there was remixes and new stuff

CaptainLorax, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:33 (sixteen years ago)

what songs?

CaptainLorax, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:33 (sixteen years ago)

they put out 13 tracks (in high-res .mp3 and .flac formats, downloadable from bleep.com) that are mostly (lengthly, one track is approx. 59 minutes and very minimal) variations of the album tracks 'perlence' and '901010>>|-|'. There is a radical remix of the track 'the Plc', which is a highlight. It is also the first track that was released.

the regular album tracks are far more succinct and already contain most of the highlights. the only worthwhile track on the limited, 2xCD deluxe edition was an extended (and more developed) version of The Plc.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Monday, 7 July 2008 07:01 (sixteen years ago)

six months pass...

Out of any 2008 release that I spent a good chunk of time listening to, Quaristice is the one that completely dropped off the face of the Earth for me. And it was true for others, apparently - while 1678 other albums were mentioned in the 2008 Pazz+Jop list, Autechre makes no appearance.

Anyone still listening to this? What's the diagnosis (time of death, etc)?

the maximum value that ZS obtains given its constraint is 8 (Z S), Saturday, 24 January 2009 02:09 (sixteen years ago)

while 1678 other albums were mentioned in the 2008 Pazz+Jop list, Autechre makes no appearance.

Funny, I noticed this as well and almost noted it in the P&J thread.

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:14 (sixteen years ago)

I'm not a big Autechre fan, so haven't listened to this one more than, say, twice. Both times were the week I bought it, probably.

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:14 (sixteen years ago)

I kinda forgot about it too

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 24 January 2009 03:17 (sixteen years ago)

Well, one thing to remember P&J is a collection of top 10s. I can see how none of these 500 people thought it was one of the 10 best albums of the year, even those who liked it.

Mark, Saturday, 24 January 2009 04:21 (sixteen years ago)

I listened to a few tracks off it tonight on iTunes, still sounds just fine...?

ilxor, Saturday, 24 January 2009 05:29 (sixteen years ago)

but doesn't Pazz&Jop and other "best of year X" lists for that matter tend to favor albums that come out closer to the end of the year?

personally, I have listened to this album (and for that matter the new Squarepusher album) a lot this year (Itunes sez 11 times for Quaristice), and dug both records. But a certain number of folks that would have had more loyalty/interest say 5 years ago are just not noticing how truly strong these albums are.

Neotropical pygmy squirrel, Saturday, 24 January 2009 07:03 (sixteen years ago)

I listened to this album more times than it deserved. 901010 |-| etc. is a worthwhile track. and the opening wafts. otherwise it's garbage.

Lowell N. Behold'n, Saturday, 24 January 2009 08:08 (sixteen years ago)

I gave the album a good few listens and it didn't blow me away (tho' I certainly wouldn't say it's 'garbage') but then I basically overwhelmed myself by getting the album and the bonus disc and all the digital EPs and the Japanese bonus track - 45 tracks in total. Too much to take in. 'Altichyre' off the bonus disc is boooooootiful though.
