WORST album on this list of “The 25 Best Albums Of High School” (1994-May 1998)” I found while rooting around my parents' house over the holidays

This was written in my senior memory book.

I grew up in gulf coast florida, about an hour from any of the big towns. The only other person I knew who taped 120 Minutes every sunday was a girl who went to the other high school that I had a crush on.

I owned or listened to at least half of these (my high school years: 96-00), and still like a lot of them (Tales From The Punchbowl, so underrated as Primus albums go). My personal least favorite of the ones I know is Dr. Octagonecologist, although I think John Henry is the weakest of TMBG's first 6 or so albums. If I heard them all, worst might be, I dunno, maybe One Hot Minute?

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 21 December 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)

"The only other person I knew who taped 120 Minutes every sunday was a girl who went to the other high school that I had a crush on."

You were in love with two high schools? People from Florida are weird.

This thread makes me wish I could turn this one into a poll.

jaymc, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Now's the time on ILX where we admit thinking TMBG were awesome in junior high

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)

Nine Inch Nails – The Downward Spiral
Tool – Aenima
Korn – Korn
Gravediggaz – 6 Feet Deep
Porno for Pyros – Good God’s Urge

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)

this is a pretty solid list, for the most part!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I'll vote NIN. That angst for angst's sake shit always sounded so contrived.

nicky lo-fi, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm... Hard call between Porno For Pyros, RAtM and Atari Teenage Riot…

I eat cannibals, Friday, 21 December 2007 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

That list has Florida written all over it.

(I do not mean that as a dig at the state of Florida, more just a description.)

nabisco, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

There are a lot of great albums here and also a lot of bad ones, but the choice is easy: PRIMUS. worst = Primus, practically by definition

NoTimeBeforeTime, Friday, 21 December 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

I would say Korn or Porno For Pyros but that's based on my unilateral hatred of both bands, not actually having heard the records. I'm guessing the PFP is the worse of the two on an objective level...

Nate Carson, Friday, 21 December 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Wyclef is the worst.

Lolpez, Friday, 21 December 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

I still like that Porno For Pyros album though the 2nd album is better.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 21 December 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

Korn is the worst one obv.

Geir Hongro, Friday, 21 December 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

One Hot Minute is the most perfect failure. It's a terrible album, but its also by far the worst Red Hot Chili Peppers album. No matter how easy it is to hate Korn, they've done a lot worse than that album.

contenderizer, Friday, 21 December 2007 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

The worst of RHCP is better than the best of Korn though (plus I don't agree with "One Hot Minute" being their worst)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 21 December 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

Porno for Pyros was crushingly disappointing even while I was living off 90's alt-rock, so I give it to that.

bnw, Friday, 21 December 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

this is pretty damn close to what i listened to in high school

latebloomer, Friday, 21 December 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

I listened to Dig Your Own Hole the other day and it was AWESOME

latebloomer, Friday, 21 December 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

In order of awfulness:

1.) Porno for Pyros – Good God’s Urge
2.) Red Hot Chili Peppers – One Hot Minute
3.) Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – Orange
4.) Primus – Tales From The Punchbowl
5.) Pearl Jam – Vitalogy
6.) Korn – Korn

Alex in SF, Friday, 21 December 2007 23:05 (eighteen years ago)

I'm scared and sad that I've actually heard at least parts of all but two of these records.

Alex in SF, Friday, 21 December 2007 23:07 (eighteen years ago)

that's not that scary. and not even very sad.

scott seward, Friday, 21 December 2007 23:13 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, most of them are okay. and were fairly popular/ubiquitous/etc.

scott seward, Friday, 21 December 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

otm.

latebloomer, Friday, 21 December 2007 23:17 (eighteen years ago)

I still at least halfway like at least 10 of those records.

contenderizer, Friday, 21 December 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

i unabashedly love at least 3 on there

latebloomer, Friday, 21 December 2007 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

There are definitely some awesome albums. I still listen to Good God's Urge, Downward Spiral, 6 feet Deep, King for a Day..., Nirvana Unplugged, Aenima, and Vitalogy.

Even some of the bands that I don't like (Primus, Korn, Ween) were OKAY. That Red Hot Chili Peppers album sucks a fucking dick though.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 22 December 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

I'm thinking Korn or the Chili Peppers with the Chili Peppers getting my vote.

steampig67, Saturday, 22 December 2007 00:51 (eighteen years ago)

that's not that scary. and not even very sad.

Yeah, what he said. You grow up with what you grow up with and you stick with what you enjoy as you do. Most of what I listened to in high school I don't touch at all now but I'm not going to pretend I didn't listen!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 22 December 2007 01:06 (eighteen years ago)

i might listen to orange if i had a copy. i liked that album. i would listen to a downward spiral but i sold my vinyl on ebay. i couldn't resist!

scott seward, Saturday, 22 December 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

Ned, I'm going to pretend I didn't listen! In fact I'm going to start by posting a list of all the albums I didn't listen to and then comment that I listened. . . oh wait that's a bad plan.

Anyway I think the fact that these albums were so ubiquitous is more what I find sad and scary (although that's probably not the set of words.) I was probably going out of my way NOT to listen to the radio or MTV when most of these were popular and yet I've still managed to hear so many of these.

I'm trying to work out what this would mean (wrt this list) but I've never been to Florida.

Thanks BIG HOOS. While I am ashamed at some of the more bonehead choices on there (I voted for Porno For Pyros, by the way), I do at least take a little bit of pride that it's eclectic, even if it was Spin-magazine-fed version of eclectic.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

Even as a 28-year-old man and professional music snob, I will STILL go to bat for Korn's first album. There's some really forward-thinking stuff on there. Alice Cooper once described it as an album that took really ugly sounds and made them beautiful, which I think is accurate (and also the same reason that people listen to Animal Collective, Grizzly Bear and Battles)

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 02:24 (eighteen years ago)

What year did you graduate, LB? And what are your 5 favorite albums of 2007?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

Some stats:
--I still own 23 of these albums. (I got rid of all my Pearl Jam because when the fuck am I going to want to listen to Pearl Jam? I sold my Korn to get a Korn CD out of my CD collection after a girl saw it on the eye-level "K" section of my CD racks and said "KORN!?" But I burned the CD and still listen to it like once a year)

--I would say I "unabashedly love" 14 of these albums

--I would say I still "like" 8 of them (Primus, TMBG, RATM, Chili Peppers, Mike Watt [all of whom have albums I DO unabashedly love that didn;t come out between 94 and 98], plus Pearl Jam, Atari Teenage Riot and Tool)... tho I probably haven't actually heard any of these albums since high school

--I would say "barf" to that Porno For Pyros album.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 02:42 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I think that while One Hot Minute is kind of crappy, it DOES have some pretty great stuff on it and is REALLY underrated. But I mean, it's also an album that I loved when I was 15, so blah blah memories.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

dude you're gonna regret getting rid of that pearl jam in about 12 to 18 months. trust me. 30th birthday looming does weird things to a man.

strongohulkington, Saturday, 22 December 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

Well, it's not like I can't get a new Pearl Jam record on Amazon for 79 cents.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

When this poll closes, I'm going to do an updated 94-98 top 25 to celebrate my 10 year anniversary!

But it's probably just going to be all rap records. And Mellow Gold will still probably be No. 1.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 02:48 (eighteen years ago)

i'm just gonna take yr word on porno for pyros, since assumption of suckiness is why i never bought a pfp album.

when i was in hs (11 years before you whippersnapper) i at one point did this whole stupid thing where i went through all my records and rated every song individually on a 1-10 scale, then added up the totals to rank the albums. i wish i still had that list (lost along with everything else on my apple iie floppy discs), but i remember purple rain was no. 1, which i don't feel bad about. i imagine there were a few clash albums in the top 10, probably some ramones, replacements, regatta de blanc, rum, sodomy and the lash, most likely the first big country record. mostly stuff i still like i guess.

tipsy mothra, Saturday, 22 December 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

(nb not all those albums came out while i was in high school. of stuff contemporaneous to 83-87 there would have been r.e.m., springsteen, psychocandy, billy idol...)

started HS in '96 (failed 9th grade due to being distracted by severe depression).

graduated in 2001.

my favorites for 2007? this is rough, but i'd say:

Baroness - Red Album
Melt-Banana - Bambi's Dilemma
The Angelic Process - Weighing Souls With Sand
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver
Pylon - Gyrate Plus reissue

latebloomer, Saturday, 22 December 2007 06:59 (eighteen years ago)

i also really liked the new Pig Destroyer and Pissed Jeans

latebloomer, Saturday, 22 December 2007 06:59 (eighteen years ago)

I really wish I made/kept lists like this when I was that age. I think the first year I made a year end list was '98 (when I was 16) and I can remember most of what was on that, but I'd love to have something like this representing all of high school.

I honestly remember that band being critically championed in 1994/1995 before they totally blew it in 96.

Am I remembering wrong? I can't be the only person who will go to bat for that record, can I?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 09:39 (eighteen years ago)

I never actually fell for Korn, but when their first record came out, I knew a bunch of people who got into it. I remember actually sitting down with my best friend and talking him out of liking it. I kinda wish someone had done that for me with regard to my Primus affinity.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 22 December 2007 11:17 (eighteen years ago)

One funny thing about the list is the number of less-"famous" records by bands that have other records better regarded today, e.g. Faith No More, Primus, Nirvana, RHCP. That's not a judgment on my part on the quality of those records, because I don't know many of them. I didn't love a lot of those earlier records enough to buy these (and I went to hs a few years earlier). I'm surprised to see the second Porno for Pyros record on the list; I suspect it would be what I'd vote for if I heard it, based on their first record (which was such a disappointment to me). I also don't see what's so Florida about the list; when I lived there (earlier, in a suburb of a biggish city) it was all hair metal and top 40 r&b (in other words awesome but not Spin alt-rock).

latebloomer, Saturday, 22 December 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

kingkongvsgodzilla, Saturday, 22 December 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

One funny thing about the list is the number of less-"famous" records by bands that have other records better regarded today

It's almost as if I was desperately holding on to a ton of bands who made better albums that blew my mind in junior high school.

I mean what else WAS there in '96/'97 for someone super into Faith No More/RHCP/Primus/Janes Addiction/Nin/RATM in '93/'94?

--Records by these same bands
--Rap records that have the same aggression/ecelecticism
--Electronic albums you could mosh to

It's not like I was going to listen to Jeff Buckley or something.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 22 December 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Every one of these albums were heavily hyped by CMJ (which I read religiously in high school). I put more than a few of their Korn tracks on mix tapes.

And I feel for you, dude. I have a heavy overlap in both the time I spent in high school and the albums I woulda listed up there.

The two genres that would have broadened my list from the same time, that you don't have on there, would have been skapunk and industrial (beyond NIN). The reason I saw the Boredoms set at Lollapalooza was because they were on directly before the Mighty Mighty Bosstones and I wanted to be right up front.

And I remember seriously caring that Gravity Kills and Filter were ripping off Stabbing Westward.

Thank God I had a jazz douchebag phase so that I could reconnect with music.

I think the saddest friends I had in high school were NIN obsessives who got so desperate during the five years between Downward Spiral and The Fragile that they ended up becoming Stabbing Westward fans just to pass the time.

* In Ontario, Canada, sleigh bells are mandated by law, and persons breaking the law are subject to a $5 fine. The law states: "Every person travelling on a highway with a sleigh or sled drawn by a horse or other animal shall have at least two bells attached to the harness or to the sleigh or sled in such a manner as to give an ample warning sound".[4] Horses' hooves on newly fallen snow are very quiet, and the sleigh runners make almost no noise.
* The "Jingle Bells" tune is used in French and German songs, although the lyrics are unrelated to the English lyrics. Both celebrate winter fun. The French song, titled Vive le vent ("Live the Wind"), was written by Francis Blanche[5][6] and contains references to Father Time, Baby New Year, and New Year's Day. There are several German versions of "Jingle Bells"; the popular Roy Black version Christkindl and Christmastime.[7]
* Although recorded by hundreds of artists, Kimberley Locke's 2006 version was the first to ever top Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart.
* A plaque commemorating the "birthplace" of "Jingle Bells" is placed on the side of a building in the center of Medford Square in Medford, Massachusetts, USA.
* In Savannah, Georgia, USA, there is a marker commemorating the the composition of "Jingle Bells" in a Church there where Pierpont served as music director.
* Nu-Metal band Korn has done a version of Jingle Bells titled "Jingle Balls"

then again i'm always i'm always curious about hip-hop solo albums from rock musicians

latebloomer, Monday, 24 December 2007 00:24 (eighteen years ago)

hahahahahaha ok here we go:

Fieldy's Dreams is the rap project by Korn's bassist, Fieldy. His first album Rock'n Roll Gangster was released in 22 Jan 2002. It is especially inspired by gangster rap. Most of the lyrics and music was done by Fieldy himself, with Polar Bear (of Infinite Mass fame) helping out with the rest. It is often an interesting and humorous listen, focussing on topics like marijuana and misogyny. Fieldy has stated that he has given up smoking pot and drinking beer as he got married on the 16th of May 2006.

Fieldy's Dreams didn't meet with commercial success nor was it well received by critics.

Fieldy has re-titled his project "Fieldy's Nightmare," with the new album, 2007's (?) Sobriety, but recording was put on hold to focus on Korn for the moment. He says that the lyrics this time around will be a lot more serious and more hardcore.

There's a song about playing pranks. And there's a line, I shit you not--RAPPED, mind you:

"I put doodoo in a bag, set in on fire/Open your door, there's a bag on fire."

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 24 December 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

I owned a whole lot of these records. I don't really listen to most of them anymore, but I'm not opposed to a lot of them - I just don't see the need to hear them.

But the Gravediggaz, on the other hand - I seriously love that record and listen to it with great frequency.

joygoat, Monday, 24 December 2007 06:02 (eighteen years ago)

El Tombato's list might be "so Alabama" cos he's from Huntsville, home of the rocket scientists (literally, like Werner Von Braun, one of the several inspirations for Dr. Strangelove). I was in central Alabama, working in record stores, and pimping everything on Whiney's list everyday. I remember liking most of it (including Korn), but not Porno For Pyros, and not most of the NIN. I always have to get used to Anthony Kiedis's voice again. Very probably, Nirvana Unplugged and Mellow Gold are the best on here, and I think I preferred M G to Odelay (which is also good) because the former incl some production by the Forest For The Trees guy. Whatever happened to him? He reportedly had a very chronic case of the shakes (having worked too long on Planet Houston, for one thing).

dow, Monday, 24 December 2007 07:02 (eighteen years ago)

A+ posting from dow.

FFTT guy had a breakdown according to wiki. I wonder if I still have my album!

Definitely:

Forest For The Trees > Deep Forest > Bran Van 3000

emily Bjurnhjam and dow, same question that went to latebloomer:

what year did you graduate and what are your 5 favorite albums of 2007?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 24 December 2007 07:22 (eighteen years ago)

Here's my top 25 of 2007 since I keep asking everyone.

1. Battles - Mirrored
2. Against Me! – New Wave
3. The Mae Shi – HLLLYH
4. Of Montreal – Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
5. UGK – Undergroud Kingz
6. Big Business – Here Comes The Waterworks
7. Gowns – Red State
8. Hyphy Hits
9. The Field – From Here We Go Sublime
10. Zs – Arms
11. LCD Soundsystem – Sound Of Silver
12. Dillinger Escape Plan – Ire Works
13. Jay-Z – American Gangster
14. Patton Oswalt – Werewolves And Lollipops
15. Hallelujah The Hills – Collective Psychosis Begone
16. Fog – Ditherer
17. Baroness – The Red Album
18. Wold – Screech Owl

Is Battles just Primus for grownups?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 December 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

The Forest For The Trees guy (Carl Stephenson, right?) had a breakdown even before the album came out; his mentor talked him into waiting several years to release it, 'til he was supposedly ready to handle promotional duties. But he didn't do that much more ( a year or two after the album, there was an enhanced EP, better for his visuals than the music, and--anything else?)(But yeah, another breakdown sounds plausible). I wouldn't try to pin Battles down too much, but obviously they know their Spike Jones, their Carl Stalling, their Anthony Braxton, yeah their Primus, their Don Cabellero, their Invisible Skratch Piklz even: absorbed it all, but their nervous systems were already like that. I graduated from high school a long time ago, and Mirrored prob should have been one of my top five, but I couldn't find either of my promos, didn't want to list without listening again (and then after I filed early ballots, it popped up on PTW, as Album Of The Year, so could have streamed it if I hadn't been such an eager beaver/ready to get it over with) Lists suck, but shoulda-been Battles aside, think it was Stax 50, The Sandinista! Project, Silver Monk Time, Mutantes Live, Sirens Of The Ditch, Sound Of Silver(oops that's six but)In other words, mostly stuff I reviewed in Voice and PTW and elsewhere (is so different from happening to like/being brainwashed by daily listening to some of the stuff I was pimping in record store, cos now I get to choose the pimpees)

i'm skeptical about comedy albums in general, but dudes @ work used to play the shit out of that patton oswalt and it's really fucking hilarious.

J0rdan S., Monday, 24 December 2007 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

I never thought about the Carl Stalling/Raymond Scott aspects of Battles, but I can pick out at least three separate moments on Mirrored where its totally evident!

Oh man...
Forest For The Trees on MySpace:

--One album remains unreleased as of 2006 being shelved by the now non-existent DreamWorks Records.
--As far as some of his new projects one of his newest singles includes music from The Young and Elderly Music Recycling Stand Band. The song "I Like to Recycle," is one song out of a brilliant collection of songs regarding the environment. It is featured on a collaborative album with several famous artists.

I just remembered how much I loved "Wet Paint" and am now kicking myself for not including it in my all-rock-songs-with-bagpipes podcast!

Not to sound like one of those people who talks about B1ll H1cks on the internet, but if someone can name an album since Hicks' Arizona Bay (1997) that's funnier than Patton's album, I would love to hear it. Otherwise Patton's got the funniest album of the last 10 years, hands down.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 24 December 2007 08:42 (eighteen years ago)

Don is right, as usual. But what's all this about liking that Battles record?

Ioannis, Monday, 24 December 2007 08:59 (eighteen years ago)

"Even as a 28-year-old man and professional music snob, I will STILL go to bat for Korn's first album."

Does that album not have a lyric that goes "knick knack paddy-wack, give a dog a bone!"? I had the misfortune of seeing Korn open for Ozzy in '95 and that line turned me off from them permanently.

I too will go to bat for the first Korn album. I have no desire to listen to it today but I thought it was pretty powerful and unique, even though I always turned my nose up at it when amongst friends. I suppose the best argument for it would be that it's probably had the biggest influence on post-2000 rock of any record I can think of but most of the bands/music it has influenced aren't thought highly of round these parts either.

I also like Marilyn Manson.

Aw, poor Korn! I think they were voted off the island for their later sins.

TS: Korn's Korn vs. Porno For Pyros' Good God's Urge.

Korn is way better!

Herman G. Neuname, Thursday, 3 January 2008 01:30 (eighteen years ago)

Orange is the shit, yeah. I definitely do not think Good God's Urge is the worst thing on the list or anywhere near it, though. It was a step in Perry Farrell's journey towards complete unlistenability and irrelevence, but he still had a long way to go.

Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 3 January 2008 01:31 (eighteen years ago)

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 3 January 2008 04:23 (eighteen years ago)

I am familiar w/ most of these, though I can't say I love any of them. My favorite is probably Ween. Dr. Octagon I liked a lot when it was out but I haven't heard it since like 2000. Maybe I would still like it. Oh shit, there is a horse in the hospital! God was that funny.

Mark Rich@rdson, Thursday, 3 January 2008 04:31 (eighteen years ago)

latebloomer, Thursday, 3 January 2008 04:48 (eighteen years ago)

I mean do it if only for the chance to rethink what you mean when you say something is "the worst album ever."

Like next time you're ready to post "UGH THIS PANDA BEAR IS THE WORST ALBUM EVER" you can just think of Fieldy and his Dreams.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Thursday, 3 January 2008 05:43 (eighteen years ago)

not to keep picking on you Shakey i like JSBX too but Average White Band enrage you for race-related reasons but JSBX are totally cool?

lol all the bands that JSBX borrowed from are white, for the most part (the Cramps in particular). To my ears, with AWB it's mostly that they don't bring anything different or interesting to the table in terms of execution. like, the only real difference between Pick Up the Pieces and the James Brown riffs they compiled the song from is that, well, they're white and British. it's just kind of lazy and irritating.

You hurt me deeply. You hurt me deeply in my heart. (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 10 March 2011 18:39 (fourteen years ago)

as RL Burnside noted, the JSBX didn't even really play blues (o the irony). I think he called them closer to disco lol

You hurt me deeply. You hurt me deeply in my heart. (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 10 March 2011 18:40 (fourteen years ago)

So basically Shakey, your argument is that ppl who are good enough to work with Herbie Hancock, Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Ray Charles, Ben E. King, Buddy Guy, Smokey Robinson and Marvin Gaye are still terrible because they are white and British?

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Thursday, 10 March 2011 18:48 (fourteen years ago)

they're terrible because they're boring

You hurt me deeply. You hurt me deeply in my heart. (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 10 March 2011 18:53 (fourteen years ago)

pick up the pieces is a good song. it would be a good song if it was by any 70s funk band.

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 March 2011 18:59 (fourteen years ago)

also: orange in particular uses those real dramatic 70s isaac hayes blaxploitation strings and stuff, that is not from the cramps.

gr8080 sings the blues (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Thursday, 10 March 2011 19:00 (fourteen years ago)

that is ONE song. and the strings, as RL Burnside might say, is more disco than blues. I'm not sure what your point is. Yes they had a wider range of influences than just the Cramps duh
