they did "crush crush crush". it was okay. based on the two tv performances i've seen on them, they kinda suck as a live band right now.

you think? I thought they were pretty good on Conan (way better than, say, Fall Out Boy, at least). "y" should've won by a much wider margin.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 7 January 2008 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

i'm going to assume that the 10 ppl who voted 'y' are the ones that ahve heard this and the other 6 are ppl like gier

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2008 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

i thought that they were aight on conan. if i remember the sound on the guitars were messed up and i was kind of disappointed. that said i would brave whiney high school girls to see them if i could.

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2008 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

shitty sound on talk shows is kinda universal, gotta give the band a handicap for that.

What am I supposed to be looking at?

The Reverend, Friday, 22 February 2008 01:13 (eighteen years ago)

Hey guys,

As most of you already know, we have cancelled the rest of our UK/Europe RIOT Tour. First of all, we want to say we are so sorry for letting all of you down. We feel terrible about it and really didn’t expect for this to happen. It probably doesn’t sound like much but we just hate that we won’t get to play this show for those of you who had hoped to see it.

There are a lot of internal issues that have been going on in this band for quite a while now. A lot of it started right around the time we were gearing up for the RIOT Tour in the US. We were able to fight through all of it for this long but unfortunately we weren’t able to keep it together long enough to make it through ’til the end of this tour. We really feel that taking this time is going to give us a chance to get away and work out our personal issues at home and on our own terms. We just aren’t willing to risk the life of our band over one tour. That probably sounds terrible right now, to say that finishing a week of shows wasn’t worth it… but if we can use this next month wisely then we will be a lot healthier for the tours ahead. We hope that - even though it might be hard to understand - that you guys can support us at this time.

Maybe one day we will tell the whole story but for now, just know that all five of us are going to work so hard to get it right. You deserve that and we deserve to make this last as long as possible - and to enjoy every second of it. We love you guys so much. If you could pray for us or just keep us in your thoughts it would be really helpful. You guys have gotten us so far and been the best motivators since day one. We are so sorry for the trouble we caused you guys who bought tickets, fan club members and to all the promoters and venues that we won’t be there to put on a show for. We are extremely sorry to New Found Glory and all their fans who wanted to put on and see a show and who we’ve let down. And lastly, to Lost Alone.

We will keep you guys updated.

Love,
Hayley, Jeremy, Josh, Zac and Taylor

yeah i dunno if i care about them that much as an albums band, but i'm okay with liking stray songs like this and "misery business." the album's pretty evenly decent, but they just remind me of so many other bands that i have a hard time really engaging w/ them

the rap battle of algiernod (k3vin k.), Sunday, 4 October 2009 22:39 (sixteen years ago)

gave the new album a listen. its the first of theirs i've tried to listen to. i was surprised by how decent it was, and i really like the girl's voice, but the music itself does little for me. there were a few songs i liked, but i'm going to have to listen to it again to figure out what they were or even why i liked them.

is their earlier stuff better/worth checking out?

Not surprisingly, this new one is the "we got huge in the last couple years and now we're all jaded and brooding now" record, but for all the moping it's still pretty solid. Really like "Playing God".

A. Begrand, Monday, 5 October 2009 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

Loving the new album so much. Jon upthread totally wrong about the ballads, "Misguided Ghosts" in particular is AMAZING. But yeah, I like the snarky snappy tunes like "Ignorance".

Tim F, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 11:40 (sixteen years ago)

Since I posted that "Misguided Ghosts" has grown on me a lot, still not feeling the other ballads though. I like Paramore punchy and upbeat.

Bastards of Young Dro, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

The lyrics and the performance really startled me, not that I place a huge emphasis on maturity and sophistication, but it seems the work of much older artists.

Tim F, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 22:17 (sixteen years ago)

lyrics to "the only exception" threaten to get on my nerves but damn if it isnt too pretty to matter

maalox (max) (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 23:16 (sixteen years ago)

The lyrics to "The Only Exception" are much closer to what I would consider to be "the norm" for a smart adolescent or post-adolescent band working in this vein. Including the "threaten to get on my nerves" aspect.

they both sing in that so-cal over-enunciated singing style, i guess -- i'm talking out of turn probably but i always think of this as "post blink-182 mannerism" and it bugs me more often that not. and they're both young white girls. but one is really charming and the other makes me want to drown myself.

goole, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 20:48 (sixteen years ago)

the singing/enunciation styles they have in common are shared by an unfortunate and huge percentage of white girls born after 1980, and their actual voices and how they use them are otherwise pretty different.

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 04:33 (sixteen years ago)

idk no one is saying she's as good as hayley (even setting aside the weird reverential vibe i'm getting - she's good but come on), just that the timbre of KP's chorus to "vegas" is similar to hayley's

sveltko (k3vin k.), Saturday, 15 May 2010 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

Exactly. I'm not interested in comparing the merits of the two singers here -- I just strongly think there's a huge similarity between what Haley's voice and Katy Perry's voice sound like, and I don't think this is a challopsy thing to say at all: to me, the similarity is just apparent.

ksh, Saturday, 15 May 2010 16:23 (sixteen years ago)

I'd have to listen to both of their current records a little more closely, but I don't think this similarity is necessarily limited to Haley's voice in general and Perry's voice in the chorus of "Waking Up In Vegas," either.

Sounds like a good deal for everyone that they left, anyway. Although (nearly) all the songs are credited to Hailey and Josh, so I wonder where their sound will go now.

Hayley presented lyrics to us that were really negative and we didn’t agree with. For example, “the truth never set me free”, which contradicts what the Bible says in John 8:32 (“and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall sat you free”).

Dudes, guess what: you're nitpicking. Most of your fanbase probably has no idea about the bible. I hope your pride carries you far.

it's funny how all this is happening right after they released a video for the song "Playing God," which features a chorus about accusations and finger-pointings, and the video is all about Hayley tying the other band members up with rope and, at the end of the video, leaving them locked in a basement and going up the stairs and leaving them behind.

hann am0n tana (some dude), Thursday, 30 December 2010 23:18 (fifteen years ago)

dudes are pretty over-the-top with "exposing" the "conspiracy" of the band's rise, though. it was always pretty clear that the band was being groomed by their label for big things but kind of deliberately 'started slow' (which you'd think they'd appreciate more since major label bands always complain about not being given time to build a fanbase anymore). it's not like they ever had real punk cred or that was a big part of their appeal -- they were just a Fuse/Alternative Press band for a couple years before they moved up to MTV and Spin.

hann am0n tana (some dude), Thursday, 30 December 2010 23:20 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

the video is all about Hayley tying the other band members up with rope and, at the end of the video, leaving them locked in a basement and going up the stairs and leaving them behind.

Lately I haven't been able to stop myself from listening to this album in light of the drama that went down. Especially this line:

"Hayley claimed that this record reunited us as band and made us grow closer together, when in reality we were all growing further apart."

Can't help but think that this makes the lyrics on the album more interesting. I originally bought it being a triumphant "we're back and tighter than ever" record, but now other things catch me, like how aggressive she is even when singing about overcoming hurdles.

Take "Looking Up" which is the song dealing directly with the earlier near break-up. You've got the classic "God knows the world doesn't need another band/ but what a waste it would've been", but otherwise it's very much about her. The recent revelations definitely tell us that the lyrics are all from her perspective alone and the others really don't have a say in it. So you've got "I'll never trade it in /'Cause I've always wanted this" - it's all "I" and not "we". Plus, "I was a few cheap shots away from the end of me" is not all that reconciliatory -- a reminder that "you were this close to me fucking leaving" isn't necessarily the thing you say among friends who've finally truly made up after a big conflict.

And then as you say, Playing God with the video and violent imagery like next time you point a finger/I might have to bend it back and break it, break it off, and it has to be so lonely/ to be the only one who's holy, echoing what Josh and Zac said about how they "fought her about how her lyrics misrepresented our band and what we stood for".

So now I'm reading ALL the lyrics this way. Unfounded, maybe, but I finally care about the words now, and she's become a much more interesting narrator.

abcfsk, Saturday, 26 March 2011 14:20 (fifteen years ago)

Oh wait I was right and didn't know it, Josh Farro had written this on his blog: "Listening to playing god makes me mad because the lyrics are so hurtful and unnecessary."

First post-split release. "Now that you're gone the world is ours". One suspects there will be at least one album's worth of Hayley confronting all the drama and her former bandmates head-on in her lyrics.

Not a very adventurous song, of course, but then this is for the Transformers OST.

"One suspects there will be at least one album's worth of Hayley confronting all the drama and her former bandmates head-on in her lyrics."

I just started getting into this band, but listening to Brand New Eyes this morning and then reading about the split in the band, it seems to me like Brand New Eyes IS that album. I'm obviously just reading into it a bit though.

Also, Brand New Eyes is fucking solid. I don't know when the last time I heard a Modern Rock album that consistently good.

Not to into that new track though.

it's pretty credulous to assume that youtube commenter is definitely who it claims to be

That's his twitter, bro.

abcfsk, Saturday, 4 June 2011 17:31 (fifteen years ago)

ohhh it looked like YT on first glance. anyway zzz. did you guys obsess over the Evanescence lineup changes this much?

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Saturday, 4 June 2011 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

I don't know anything about Evanescence, but I doubt it had this potent mix of religion and internal sell-out/conspiracy/fake-or-not conflict, the bluntness of the lyrics describing everything, the anger that lingered afterwards. This is great stuff to write pop songs about!

abcfsk, Saturday, 4 June 2011 17:53 (fifteen years ago)

ben moody come back!!!

difficult listening hour, Saturday, 4 June 2011 18:41 (fifteen years ago)

paramore are good and evanescence suck

uberweiss, Saturday, 4 June 2011 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

there was lots of religion and conspiracy theories in the Evanescence split too

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Saturday, 4 June 2011 20:03 (fifteen years ago)

the whole split thing just dovetailed neatly with what this band (or at least hayley) was already obsessed with anyway: feeling simultaneously defiant and guilty about moral transgressions. even the song this thread's originally about is about the moral laws hayley's too christian not to value and too human not to violate ("and the forgiveness / that we're both supposed to have exchanged / sorry, honey, i passed it up NOW LOOK THIS WAY"). on lots of brand new eyes you can't tell whether hayley's arguing with purist punk kids or god because both of them make her feel guilty. when atlantic signed her it was to be a pop singer; she fought for her touring punk band, presumably because those values matter to her--cf. all the PARAMORE EST UNA BANDA t-shirts she wears--and i think it probably bothers her that no matter what she does she's still the most important part of the band. but then she probably digs it too. so she writes all these songs telling people not to judge her while she judges herself. no matter how many rosary beads lady gaga puts in the frame she won't be this deep inside the conflation of the personal and sensual and (subculturally) political w/ the religious.

difficult listening hour, Saturday, 4 June 2011 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

should say that i don't think hayley's a great lyricist or anything; she's just open and thoughtful and i think there are probably a lot of people, especially young people, especially girls, especially from the south, who are the same kind of confused she is.

difficult listening hour, Saturday, 4 June 2011 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

confused re: how good they should feel about themselves, i mean.

difficult listening hour, Saturday, 4 June 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

several the biggest female stars of the past couple decades (Alanis, Pink, Avril) straddled a similar line of becoming popular in part by not making quite the kind of pop music their label initially wanted them too and making it part of their REBEL image. it's getting to be a pretty weird recurring narrative.

a http://bit.ly/kv895M (some dude), Saturday, 4 June 2011 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

Right, difficult listening hour succinctly sums up what I find appealing about this band. Just add 'and tight tunes' at the end.

"you can't tell whether hayley's arguing with purist punk kids or god because both of them make her feel guilty."

So so otm. That's the big hook for Brand New Eyes, what makes it about more than righteous emo anger. I had to get this angle before finding points of interest in their lyrics. And those lyrics, while sometimes clunky or awkward, can be captivating in that ambiguity.

really says something about "Misery Business" that i heard it on the radio between "Welcome To The Jungle" and "Killing In The Name Of" and it didn't really feel wimpy or girly or anything by comparison

some dude, Thursday, 9 June 2011 20:11 (fourteen years ago)

Surprised that Monster is top 10 in both the UK and the US - set to be their biggest hit by far, and that's with a heavy, sludgy song that's not in any way FM-baiting as 'Only Exception' was.

abcfsk, Thursday, 9 June 2011 20:34 (fourteen years ago)

well that's iTunes sales for a just-released song -- that has everything to do with anticipation among the fanbase and nothing to do with radio-friendliness or how much of an airplay hit it could be once people actually hear it

It's always been my favorite from the debut album.

justfanoe (Greg Fanoe), Saturday, 30 January 2021 15:25 (five years ago)

and that's saying a lot for a song from their second album!

peace, man, Saturday, 30 January 2021 18:54 (five years ago)

Whoops! Totally forgot about their debut album, haven't listened to that one in years.

“miracle” is a miracle

not sure if a riot poll would be interesting or not (“that’s what you get” in a landslide, right) but i’d vote for this song

xp tbh that run from of "For a Pessimist..." through "crushcrushcrush" is pretty damn unimpeachable.
