Xhuxk: "['Two Princes'] was funkier than any other rock song to make it onto the radio in its decade."

Pretty plausible theory at first glance.

How many other funky rock songs were on the radio in the 1990s? Were any funkier than "Two Princes?"

I think "Sexx Laws" is way funkier, but does that count as a rock song?

Is "Give It Away" funkier than "Two Princes"?

i don't think 'sexx laws' is a rock song or funky.

This is kind of like when my college gf said Cracker's "Low" was one of the few "sexy" alt-rock songs of its time. As if that's any reason to listen to it now.

da croupier, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)

Thanks for the heads up, Tracer.

I think "Sexx Laws" is funky because it sounds like Earth, Wind & Fire. I think "Jerry" is funky because it's heavy on the "one" and the bass/guitar/drum interplay is percussive in a funky way.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:33 (seventeen years ago)

Both dudes love to play as many notes on that snare as possible. Aaron (Spin Doctors guy) has a lot more finesse tho.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

"Sexx Laws" always sounded more "full of funk signifiers" than "funky" to me. We should be looking for heavy guitar rock where the rhythm section just HAD TO FUNK IT UP, like "Evenflow" and all Abbruzzese-era Pearl Jam.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 4 January 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

-- radio rock in the '90s was pretty unfunky, much less funky than radio rock in the '80s and '70s, so it's not a bad hypothesis

It's embarrassingly difficult to argue against Two Princes. I'd nominate 'Girls and Boys' by Blur. Happy Mondays should win this, if they released anything worthy in the 90s. Unless Radiohead ever worked with Bootsy Collins?

Dude, I'm not even sure "Two Princes" was the funkiest song by Spin Doctors to make it onto the radio in its decade (see: "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong").

I suspect his thread would have a different title if Edie Brickell had waited a year on "What I Am"

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, White Trash wins, I think, even if I can't remember ever hearing that on the radio. "Hard To Handle" maybe second place. "Two Princes" third at worst at this point. "Sexxx Laws," or all that Chili Peppers/Primus cow-milking-bassline stuff...Nope. (Primus always seemed funkier to me when they were having a hoedown than pretending to play funk.) And I don't get the Pearl Jam nominations at all (I guess maybe "Not For You" might do okay, otherwise STP were a way better dance band), though I'm wondering if somebody like, say, Faster Pussycat had any early '90s semi-radio hits that might qualify. (Wait, what about EMF? If Happy Mondays or Blur count, then shouldn't they? Not very rock, though...)

Someone on a bus once told me that if I heard Cracker, I'd never want to listen to rap again. I've intentionally avoided Cracker ever since, because I wouldn't want that to happen.

The Reverend, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

Not sure if OMC's "How Bizarre" is a rock song, but if it is, then that.

o. nate, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

"I don't think we got the short end of the stick. We could have stayed together and made a another great album. We chose to end it, which was obviously a huge mistake. We were definitely biting off the Chili Peppers which drove me nuts. It's a style I didn't really care for. I'm a metal head! By the way, I don't think Chili Peppers should be credited for ushering in that funky genre all. Van Halen were the first ones who started blending heavy metal and funk and making it cool. Just listen to the whole "Fair Warning" album. Chile Peppers blow. That being said, I should mentioned that I did audition for the Chili Peppers several yrs ago. I had a great audition and I thought I was in for sure, but they didn't like my image and style. Flea said I was too bluesy and didn't look enough like an "art fag". I think the Keidis dude liked me though."

I like "Low"! And I love "How Bizarre," which would probably win for sure if it counts, though yeah, I doubt any rock stations ever played the thing.

And I just remembered that Kid Rock's Devil Without A Cause came out in 1988. So....something on that, probably. I wonder how airplay "Wastin' Time" got...

Also think Rancid and Offspring probably had rhythm sections as good as Sublime's (who I like), but I've never thought of any of them as "funky," per se'.

xhuxk, Friday, 4 January 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

maybe it's a style, not a mistake. i think the criticism is valid -- they are overplayed and overmixed -- but the result is a particular kind of groove that is not funk per se but funk-rock. and in this case not as good as, maybe, james gang or something, but still a good groove.

scott seward, Friday, 4 January 2008 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

"(i don't think cindy b. actually played drums on the record, btw, just video/live)"

If this is true I DON'T WANNA KNOW.

Tim F, Friday, 4 January 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, i think lenny played the drum tracks :>

Jordan, Friday, 4 January 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

funkiest 90s british radio rock single is much harder - a couple already mentioned but always liked the chorus of 'Moving' by Supergrass too

OH MAN!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 4 January 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

what's the funkiest afghan wigs song?

'Neglekted' comes to mind. Maybe '66'. (I heard Dulli claim that Hey Ya! stole from 66, wtf.) They were more soulful (lol) then funky. Really they were more singing about sex while the other 90's rock dudes were singing about some bullshit.

bnw, Friday, 4 January 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

On their Dulli's gravestone:

"Really they were more singing about sex while the other 90's rock dudes were singing about some bullshit."

helmet might have been my favorite funk rock band in the 90's

But Scott, what about....

http://youtube.com/watch?v=UculXjdcSYs

???

I need to bone up on Brother Cane one of these days! (I did a couple "hard boogie rock" roundups for the Voice and for L.A. Weekly circa '91/92, featuring um...Junkyard, Electric Angels, Dangerous Toys, Blackeyed Susan, Circus of Power, and well, lots of other bands probably. Not sure if Brother Cane figured in those or not. White Trash hit me as a mere "pop your bassline" band at the time, actually. Liked these guys a whole lot more, I'm pretty sure:

http://wm02.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:fcfoxqr5ldje

These guys, too, but okay, but not funky as Lenny Kravitz and the Helmets, who cares. (Actually, Helmet never hit me as remotely funky, to be honest. But maybe I could just never get past the singer.)

Actually, I meant to link to this Jackyl video, not their AMG page:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=AKSJLop26yI

I still think Kid Rock is winning, though.

xhuxk, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

i work with a woman that did concert promotion for a living in the late 90s. had to get the bands to shows, take them to radio stations.

i mentioned the whigs once and she was like i HATE dulli...i asked he what's up...she said he was half the time normal, half the time some weird loverman persona...like one time she went to pick him up and he was wearing a full length fur coat w/a bottle of hennessy and a cane.

M@tt He1ges0n, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:27 (seventeen years ago)

And yet somehow failed to ever make a 2-step record. Lazy.

nabisco, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:32 (seventeen years ago)

And where does Collective Soul's best song fit into this (I'm not saying it's really in the running -- though it's as funky as anything I've ever heard by Afghan Whigs, even their TLC cover -- just wanted to link it anyway):

http://youtube.com/watch?v=pCjUHCAqqGE

xhuxk, Friday, 4 January 2008 23:49 (seventeen years ago)

maybe it's a style, not a mistake. i think the criticism is valid -- they are overplayed and overmixed -- but the result is a particular kind of groove that is not funk per se but funk-rock.

OTM. I really like this tune but never thought of it as funky (or even funk-rock, really.) I'm sure it is thuddy and stupid and grooveless compared to "The Big Payback" or something but that's pretty beside the point when it comes to what I enjoy about it. (If anything, I think of it as going for something akin to the pop songs on Houses of the Holy. I'm guessing this what Dominique was getting at.) This is also why I find this thread hilarious.

Sundar, Saturday, 5 January 2008 02:22 (seventeen years ago)

The link doesn't work for me but I'm guessing it might be helpful.

(The thuddiness and beat-you-over-the-head stupidity of the groove are part of what I like about the song, as it is.)

Sundar, Saturday, 5 January 2008 02:25 (seventeen years ago)

I give up trying to link stuff on ILX, even when trying to plug my own threads...it's just hopeless.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 5 January 2008 02:42 (seventeen years ago)

Ooh, Collective Soul! That's a good'un. As are Jackyl.
Seward's Sass Jordan-boosting is intriguing to me - I didn't know she had any kind of following in the U.S.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:02 (seventeen years ago)

I was blown away and disturbed at the same time. Like when I learned that You Can't Do That On Television had made it across borders as well.

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

even flow is "funky" in an extremely 90s way.

I had Pocket Full Of Kryptonite back in middle school, and thought the album track "Refrigerator Car" was a dead ringer for Even Flow-style PJ.

da croupier, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

one of my favorite funniest things about Pearl Jam is that largely unacknowledged period just before superstardom where they toured with RHCP and made goofy songs like "Dirty Frank" and occasionally brought the funk in their own humble way.

Alex in Baltimore, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

their own humble pie way

da croupier, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

"Dirty Frank" was my fave PJ B-side for obv. reasons.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Saturday, 5 January 2008 08:18 (seventeen years ago)

As far as I can tell this thread has yet to discuss either Sugar Ray or The Space Monkeys' "Sugar Cane".

that one luscious jackson song was funky.

someone -- i'm nominating mr. croupier, should make a sweet 2CD post-vitology pearl jam mix so i can hear some dope Binaural album traxxx! thanks in advance.

M@tt He1ges0n, Sunday, 6 January 2008 01:14 (seventeen years ago)

also it occurs to me, as i've been for some reason pondering the spin doctors (shoot me pls), but their "sound", their thing as it were, was being a jam band without the jams. which also made me think there are probably a bunch of phish songs that are funkier.

M@tt He1ges0n, Sunday, 6 January 2008 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

But why would jam bands with jams be funkier than jam bands without jams? I don't get that. (And judging from their best-of album last year, Lucious Jackson -- including "Naked Eye," their hit -- were nowhere near as funky as they were made out to be.)

Still, now I'm realzing that I'm kind of surprised nobody mentioned "Sabotage" by the Beastie Boys.

Anyway:

<3 that Whiney defends the drumming on "Two Princes"... for such a boring song the drums are really on another level.

imperial frfr (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 29 April 2025 16:54 (one week ago)

But to come at Chuck: "Two Princes" is 0% funky at all outside of the drumming.

(unless Chuck has a soft spot for that skibidi scooby dooby post-Scatman proto-Mraz vox)
