It looks like the late William Rehnquist.

Nevermind easy.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Sunday, 6 January 2008 22:55 (eighteen years ago)

I liked "In Utero" before he died, so ner.

Also, I knew the bassist in the first Nirvana.

Mark G, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

If The Beatles had broken up in 1966, Paul McCartney's debut solo album probably would have sounded a bit like "The Story Of Simon Simopath".

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 6 January 2008 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

I think it would've sounded exactly like the songs he wrote for the White Album.

Actually, that's the first picture I've seen of the band. I think Chris is far right. He also sang lead on "The Lord" by the bee gees. OK, end.

I think it would've sounded exactly like the songs he wrote for the White Album.

You mean the songs he wrote for "Sgt. Pepper" sounded exactly like the ones he wrote for the White Album?

McCartney did release a solo album with material sounding largely like his White Album output. It's called "McCartney" and it was released in 1970.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas, Monday, 14 January 2008 09:00 (eighteen years ago)

The pic is from 1989. Nirvana, at the time, consisted of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Jason Everman and Chad Channing. Maybe not a very "representative" pic, but I didn't pay enough attention when picking it.

I don't think I've ever listened to Bleach all the way through, but In Utero is my favorite album of the 90s...

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:52 (fifteen years ago)

to me it's the least interesting of Nirvana studio albums. many solid tracks to be sure, but to me it doesn't have the passion or quality of prior recordings (including Incesticide)

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

(and yes I realize Incesticide isn't a studio album per se)

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

You've just described my opinion of Nevermind.

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:57 (fifteen years ago)

Nevermind was the best of both worlds, man. strong poppy hooks which Bleach lacked (though wasn't striving for), but plenty of 'noisy' riffs to keep the purists at bay.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:58 (fifteen years ago)

also don't really think there's a bad track on Nevermind whereas there's quite a few I skip past on In Utero ("Dumb" and "All Apologies" being two of them).

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 13:59 (fifteen years ago)

To my my ears the songs on it are a lot more samey and formulaic than on their other records, and the production isn't scuzzy or messy enough for a band like Nirvana.

xpost - love both those tracks!

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:00 (fifteen years ago)

I also skip Dumb and All Apologies, but the rest of the album is so great that In Utero is still easily their best album

peter in montreal, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:03 (fifteen years ago)

I guess I'll have to agree to disagree there. I don't think I ever played it more than three times. granted I'm not a huge Nirvana listener anymore, but even when I was Bleach, Incesticide, and Nevermind always got more listens from me.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:04 (fifteen years ago)

i mean, when i was 13, all i listened to was Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Talking Heads, Red Hot Chili Pepz, Ramones, Primus, Breeders, Ministry, etc—and Nevermind was pretty much the center of this universe for me.

Now that I'm 30 and are more into Husker Du, Wipers, Melvins, Jesus Lizard, Throbbing Gristle, Swans, etc—Bleach just sounds more like a part of my world. Revisiting it recently was like seeing an old girlfriend that got super pretty. Also, I remember hearing it in a bar once with a fellow musician, and he turns to me and asks "Who's this covering Nirvana?" and I was like, "It's Nirvana." Because neither of us ever really noticed that Chad and Dale play double kick pedal all over this thing, which was pretty fucking gauche in 90s alt-rock.

i love you but i've chosen markers (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:05 (fifteen years ago)

Ugh, correction, 31... u_u

i love you but i've chosen markers (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:05 (fifteen years ago)

San Te are you one of those guys that thinks that In Utero is 'too mellow'?

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:06 (fifteen years ago)

Not really, I mean, Nevermind had "Polly", "On a Plain", and "Something in the Way", which I loved. Maybe 'too restrained', but even then, I mean, there's not a 'template' that I need to follow to enjoy Nirvana either.

the songwriting just didn't grab me as much. I would say "Milk It" is my favorite from the album, except that live versions have always been way better than the studio version.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:08 (fifteen years ago)

the songwriting, and the lyrics esp., is I think In Utero's biggest strong point...

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:10 (fifteen years ago)

"Lounge Act" and "On a Plain" are the two Nevermind tracks I still find myself humming at odd moments.

raging hetero lifechill (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

just realised that nirvana's albums are mostly quite similar in my mind, in that there are a load of tracks which i remember how they go from the beginning to the end, and a bunch that I can only remember the name of. So Nevermind has Lithium, On A Plain, Polly, Teen Spirit, In Bloom, Territorial, Come As You Are etc, but also has Lounge Act and Drain You which I'm pretty fuzzy on. Same with In Utero, but even more - lots of great memorable tracks but I couldn't tell you how Very Ape or Milk It go. Plus I never liked Rape Me or Heart Shaped Box or Pennyroyal Tea that much - they seemed too slow and/or angsty. Not much fun.

These days the Nirvana album I'd reach for out of choice is Incesticide. Lots of fun and manages to show many different sides of Nirvana, from the poppy (Sliver, Molly's Lips), to the rocky (Aneurysm, Dive) to the plain noisy and bizarre (Hairspray Queen).

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:12 (fifteen years ago)

I love Lounge Act

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:14 (fifteen years ago)

Lounge Act and On a Plain are both fantastic, yeah.

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:15 (fifteen years ago)

And the last four tracks on Incesticide are all awesome in totally different ways.

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:16 (fifteen years ago)

Actually, Lounge Act is the one that goes "Bum da-da Dum da-da Dum Duh-Dum Da-da-da" so yeah, I know it. And Drain You is about babies. So I lied about Nevermind, but then I have had it in my music collection since the dinosaurs died out so I should remember these songs by now.

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

Aneurysm is the best Nirvana song too.

village idiot (dog latin), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:17 (fifteen years ago)

A brownish area with points (chap), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

xp Can't really listen much to the back half of Incesticide (aside from Aneurysm and Downer)(& Downer wz on Bleach)...surprising to me that you would dismiss Heart Shaped Box and Pennyroyal Tea as "not much fun" but then fuck with the likes of Aero Zeppelin and Big Long Now...

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

question for geir, who wrote the following to explain the absence of unplugged and from the muddy banks... on the poll:

Albums consisting only of new versions of pre-existing material don't belong here.

geir: does the way a song is performed/recorded matter at all for you? is there any chance whatsoever that the unplugged versions of, say, "about a girl" or "pennyroyal tea" are better than the original studio versions, or do you consider that to be automatically impossible? is the beatles' "revolution 1" automatically better than "revolution" because it was recorded first? or is it possible that they improved it when they re-recorded it? do you allow at all for that possibility? and if you do, do you also allow for that possibility with a live version? i'm genuinely curious as to your reasoning behind this.

who gives a shit? Geir excluded Incesticide and the two live albums and included the two 60s Nirvana albums: he has a bit of the idiot in him.

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:13 (fifteen years ago)

i'm aware of geir's general feelings about live recordings. i asked the question because he broadens the exclusion here (and elsewhere) to "new versions of pre-existing material." which raises the question: does performance matter at all? does a great vocal performance matter? does great playing matter? or is the first recording, preferably by the composer, automatically better than all other recordings. period? i'm not looking for a titanic-channeling, ilx-sinking, world-ending thread. just a simple answer. really!

I had the 7" version, back in the day. A very silly Melvins' cover of "Venus in Furs" on the other side.

Mark G, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 15:22 (fifteen years ago)

I had a chance to buy some sort of weird Nirvana vinyl (7 or 10" ???) once, with the VU cover and the song Opinion and some other song on it, I can't remember which. Didn't have quite enough to do it, and am now haunted by it.

Never found it in any Nirvana discography; does anybody have any idea what the other song was? Was it super-rare or anything? Wd appreciate the feedback!!!1!!

bleach = in utero > incesticide > nevermind > unplugged for me

i admit my placement of nevermind might have something to do with being absolutely inundated by it for the entirety of hs. anyway, don't sleep on incesticide imo

My order:

incesticide > with the lights out > in utero > bleach > nevermind > unplugged

I think Nirvana's non-album tracks are pretty remarkable, unexpectedly ass-kicking and often very strange.

Is "Talk to Me" a cover? It sounds very familiar (in the same way that all nirvana songs sound familiar, even upon hearing it the first time) but otherwise doesn't sound at all like a nirvana song.

xp I tend to despise most Courtney Love trash-talk, but I think that this (handling Kurt's recorded output) is the one area where a legitimate claim could be made that she is a scourge on this earth.

scaruffi kaleidoscope (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

I'd condense that to, "I tend to despise Courtney Love; she is a scourge on this earth."

is that rarities box set no good? i've never heard it.

tylerw, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

the box set is great! lot of curiosities that are actually worth listening to repeatedly. check out this one, for example:

also check this out for being possibly the weirdest song in the Nirvana catalog-- but impossibly catchy too

the video of them in a rumpus room practicing with some dude simulating a strobe light by flicking the light switch on and off is pretty charming.

is that Sliver?

I think "Dive" is still one of my favorite "non-regular studio album" track, followed closely by "I Hate Myself and Want to Die".

Great tracks. One of my favorite non-album tracks is the split single they did with the Jesus Lizard, "Oh the Guilt."

you gotta admit, no one can scream like that these days

Lazarus Niles-Burnham (res), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 17:43 (fifteen years ago)

on Bleach Kurt screamed until his voice gave out. I remember my first few listens were painful for the whole "geezus that must hurt like hell" angle.

melody-hating aggr0 nerd (San Te), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 17:44 (fifteen years ago)

Dive, Oh the Guilt, and I Hate Myself are all excellent songs...Been a Son is totally my favorite 'non-regular studio album' track, but there were a lot of great ones...

Even in His Youth is pretty good too; not quite as good as Oh the Guilt or I Hate Myself or Verse Chorus Verse, but I still like it lots...

it looks straight out of Freaks & Geeks but with more mustaches.
