Rolling T-Pain Thread 2008

Kind of a joke thread based on his ubiquity in '07, but depending on how long that lasts, possibly also an actual functional thread to use throughout the year, keeping the rappa ternt sanga from fudging up the rolling R&B and rap threads. T-Pain starts the year with his 3rd #1 single, Flo Rida's "Low," which is still slowly growing on me. A lot of news outlets are reporting that he has a new 'album' called No Love Without Pain out this week, but that appears to be just an unauthorized best-of mixtape by DJ RPM. "Church" was kind of a flop so I think the Epiphany singles have run their course (although I wish his label would go ahead and push "Backseat Action," which has gotten plenty of club/mix show spins), and his 3rd album appears to be due out this summer. His '08 will probably look a bit like Lil Jon's 2004, when he reached such a saturation point that all sorts of random artists you'd never expect him to collaborate with grab him for their first single (apparently Mariah locked him down for her lead single, which my mind can't even process right now). The question is whether the backlash will eventually trump his popularity this year, or if he drops a song or album good enough to silence the critics or get (more of) them in his corner. Get your predictions in now and laugh/cry later. I'm kind of rooting for the guy just because he's funnier and more talented (Epiphany is really musically varied for an entirely self-produced album) than most of his barely-sangin' peers, but he definitely needs to step his game up before his moment runs out and people get too sick of the autotune being his primary distinguishing characteristic.

The latest single featuring T-Pain is "Boss" by Rick Ross:
http://www.xxlmag.com/online/?p=18096
Based on his momentum right now it's fair to say just about anything featuring T-Pain will be massive but I don't really hear a hit in this one, the most interesting about which is that the phrase "thus far" pops up in the chorus repeatedly.

don't really know what i want from t this year... ideally like him to take a breather for a month or two (maybe a produce a track or two on the low like he's started to do) until this mariah thing drops, then come back hard with something of his own. random stuff like this ross and dolla is just annoying the shit outta me right now

r|t|c, Monday, 7 January 2008 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah...but given that different labels and artists operate on completely different schedules, I don't think a break like that would make any difference, since at any given moment the songs he has out could've been made 2 or 6 or 12 months ago. And going away for a while for the sake of going away (or to protest a label situation like Lil Jon did) is usually what makes an artist who's big at the moment disappear for good, so I can't fault him for striking while the iron's hot. If he keeps the quality up then I won't bitch about the quantity.

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 7 January 2008 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i'm aware that's the pragmatic way and all (altho quality is def being spread thin), it's just my personal pref right now.

on the other hand if i was t's manager i'd be forcing him at gunpoint to marry t-love and release 'rereturn of the b-girl 2008' together, so what do i know.

i was reading an ass old edition of entertainment weekly in a waiting room today and they interviewed missy about her new album and they asked her who she was working with and her first answer was of course t-pain

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2008 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

I guess the poll thread could tell me, but of the last few months of T-Pain singles and collab-os what's really good?

Tim F, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

uummmmm a lot of good stuff on his album, 'backseat action' w/ shawnna and 'shottas' with kardi and cham (i imagine you'd really like that tim). 'kiss kiss' w/ chris brown really grew on me and he completely kills the '2 step' rmx (jim jones and e-40 are good too) (probably rap rmx of the year) and the song with twista 'creep fast' is pretty good as well.

Don't know why "Low" had to grow on you, it's pretty classic T-Pain... "Cyclone" and "Who The Fuck Is That?," on the other hand, are awful. Looking forward to his work with Mariah, should be interesting to say the least. "Tipsy" is his official next single, though I think they should've went with "Show U How".

The Brainwasher, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

"low" grew on me too. basically cuz it took me a while to not be annoyed by "low low low low low low low" and to sit through a whole flo rida verse

J0rdan S., Monday, 7 January 2008 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

-- The Brainwasher, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:10 (Yesterday) Link

that's surprising, "Tipsy" never occurred to me as a potential single (although I guess it at least contributes to the picture painted by "Buy U A Drank" and "Bartender" that the guy is apparently some kind of alcoholic). "Show U How" is good, though. I don't think "Low" is classic T-Pain, if anything he's the weak link of the song.

wish 'church' would fuck off already

brainwasher otm about 'show u how', it's that cute side t-pain never seems to wanna show

r|t|c, Friday, 22 February 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

Kind of surprised that "Boss" seems to be doing well, or at least better than "Speedin'," sounded like such a non-starter to me. T-Pain's on the new Charlie Wilson single and I kind that combination vaguely promising but haven't heard it yet. I'm skeptical about "Shawty Get Loose," his collaboration with Lil Mama and a certain accordian-playing parodist, catching on outside the lowered expectations of 106 & Park and its internet equivalent, the Poptimists. "Low" is in its 9th week at #1, which I have to admit is just outrageous at this point.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:11 (seventeen years ago)

what's the song with the chorus that ends in "whooooo the heck is that?" it pretty much blows

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 14:30 (seventeen years ago)

that's the bowlderized radio/video version of Dolla's "Who The Fuck Is That?" which I mentioned in the 2nd post on this thread. yeah, it sucks.

a local mix show DJ's been playing "Dance Floor" lately, at first I was excited that T-Pain had a good new solo single but it turns to be just a deep cut from his '05 album that I slept on. same station also tends to play some awful rough mix-sounding version of "Low" where the chorus seems to be scratch vocals by Flo Rida or someone else other than T-Pain, don't even like the real version that much but it's so grating to hear someone other than T-Pain attempt to sing it in his style.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:36 (seventeen years ago)

low is still number one?!!?!?

and what, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

fucks sake

and what, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:39 (seventeen years ago)

ive given up on radio completely because of that song

and what, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:41 (seventeen years ago)

totally otm as ive stated elsewhere

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 14:45 (seventeen years ago)

weird thing is I've never heard "Low" that much on the radio (might be because I usually listen during the mix shows when they're emphasizing new stuff?), so I never actually got sick of it personally. I can see it getting really annoying if I heard it enough, though.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 22 February 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

Whatever; I still like Low and I've been listening to it for months.
More 'Shawty Get Loose' love, please.
Also, what the hell is wrong with 'Church'? And why so much hate on this thread in the first place? I'll agree that 'Who the Fuck' and 'Speedin' are weak, but for fuck's sake, it's T-PAIN. He's a special fellow.

forksclovetofu, Friday, 22 February 2008 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

I like "Church" and always have (although the crappy video and clean edit have dampened my enthusiasm a little). This thread was started out of love for T-Pain, but also with a critical eye on whether his '08 will be as good as his '07.

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 22 February 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

church is okay but "shottas" and "backseat action" for life

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

wasn't backseat action supposed to be a single

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 20:00 (seventeen years ago)

I think at one point it was supposed to follow "Bartender" instead of "Church," yeah, got some mix show spins but that's about it. I think "Backseat Action" makes the best case for T-Pain's talents as a producer, those drums are fucking sick.

r|t|c, Friday, 22 February 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

is this top hat stylin a new development or did i miss that too? i see he's got one on in the 'boss' vid too

i wonder if the 'boss' appeal is in how it's actually quite chill when you're expecting the usual nu-miami runners bombasticness. i wonder cos that appeal still totally escapes me obv. grim.

r|t|c, Friday, 22 February 2008 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

i'll ride for 'boss' i think the beat is fire

he's wearing a top hat in that 2 pistols vid too. i totally support top hats becoming RAP TREND of '08.

J0rdan S., Friday, 22 February 2008 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

that beat is so boring
the only thing i can think of is its riding purely on the momentum of the artists

ok i totally love "she got it"-- heard it like 68 times on the radio this weekend in stl and it finally totally clicked. justice league have effectively kicked the runners out of the slow, creepy, monolithic beats for florida dudes throne and i think that's a good thing.

J0rdan S., Monday, 28 April 2008 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

"Buss Yo Head" was a big steet joint for mnoths but I never totally warmed up to it. nice hard simple beat, though. loved their song on the Shawnna album, but those Shareefa tracks were two of my least favorites on the album, decent productions but boring songs.

it took the video for me to realize that this Ace Hood aka Ace Gutta guy on Khaled's new label isn't the same as the Ace Mack that was on Khaled's "Make It Rain" remix. shit is confusing! I'm really starting to feel like pre-top hat T-Pain was the end of his hot streak.

most endearingly o_O career move in recent T-Pain history is this video with Ukranian pop star Ruslana:

confirmed off thr33 ringz. would make a pretty good album track but would flop as a single. maybe wayne's worst usage of autotune ever, but pain's parts are pretty good and low key. beat sounds like "love in this club pt. 3" or something.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 July 2008 06:55 (seventeen years ago)

hopefully the first single is huge and awesome.

not if it's "Silver & Gold"!

I had high hopes after Epiphany that his next album would be some shit to seriously confirm his talent, but his last dozen or so collabs have been so uniformly weak that I dunno now. still rooting for the dude though.

some dude, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 07:40 (seventeen years ago)

ya i agree re: "silver & gold". one of my favorite songs of the year but it would flop. im sure "snap your fingers" will shoot straight to the top 10 off two weeks worth of itunes sales anyway so i think they'd be retarded not to go with that. i think this has been a decent year for his collabos actually (IM TALKIN CASH FLOW) but as long as 2 pistols or whoever don't show up on this i can't imagine that it'll be any worse than epiphany.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 July 2008 07:46 (seventeen years ago)

Karaoke feat Dj Khaled - definite highlight, T-Pain add’s this is probably his favourite track says it’s gonna be the last track on the album, strong diss track where he’s rapping about people biting his style, he says the only people that can do it are Lil Wayne and Kanye West , shows respect to Roger Troutman too. The song starts of with him apologising to Akon and his management, he add’s this is due to them not wanting him to air people out.

This is probably a fair move, maybe even a necessary one, for him at this point, but it's funny how a year ago he was saying that only Chris Brown and R. kelly can use style, now it's 2 other people he happens to be working with recently. Stop moving the goalposts, dude! All or none!

xpost - is "Snap Your Fingers" out yet?

some dude, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 07:53 (seventeen years ago)

nah i don't think it's out yet. i just meant solely off name recognition. i guess "got money" could disprove the theory but i think that would've gone top 10 had they not put 4 carter III other songs on itunes immediately after.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 July 2008 07:57 (seventeen years ago)

well, at this point I have no idea if "Got Money" is going to rebound up the charts once the video's out and "A Milli" and "Lollipop" have finally died down, or if it really is going to prove to be a weird (relative) flop by 2 sure things. i wouldn't mind NOT hearing it all summer, though.

some dude, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 07:59 (seventeen years ago)

do you have any idea how it's doing airplay wise? i can't imagine it surging that much wrt digital sales even if radio starts to pick it up. i mean right now it's getting outsold by that awful david banner song while "a milli" continues to stay in the top 35 or so. i think they sacrificed its chart potential by including it in the pre-album release deluge strategy. i mean they had to have known that putting it on itunes right at the height of "lollipop"s success was going to irreparably stunt it.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 July 2008 08:07 (seventeen years ago)

maybe it's t-pain fatigue though? i think "she got it" would've been a surefire top 10 last year and it barely crept inside the top 30 this year. i think if wayne's still got ultimate name recognition right now. i think if they did a properly timed release for "comfortable" it would be a huge huge hit.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 July 2008 08:09 (seventeen years ago)

I dunno, it's hard to say whether the marketplace is burned out on T-Pain or what. You could say 2 Pistols or Tay Dizm or whoever just doesn't have star quality, but it's not like Flo Rida does either! If anything other rappers autotuning w/o T-Pain has just replaced T-Pain hooks for a lot of more popular rappers at this point, even if Kanye and Wayne are the only one making actually hits like that right now (lol "Rider Pt. 2").

some dude, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

i kinda dig "cash flow" by ace hood. good t-pain hook on that one.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:22 (seventeen years ago)

so are we supposed to take the T-Wayne announcement-via-t shirt as a serious thing??? or is that not gonna happen...like I Can't Fell My Face or really any number of other rap projects

kid mush, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

t-pain's t-wayne t-shirt

kid mush, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:32 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah "Cash Flow" is definitely my favorite T-Pain cut of '08 so far. Not really so much for the hook, though, I just like the awesome drums and the fact that Ace is a halfway capable rapper compared to almost every other FL dude that blew up with a T-Pain feature.

xpost yeah I don't believe any of Wayne's collaborative projects other than with Baby will ever drop

some dude, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:34 (seventeen years ago)

I mean maybe after the C3 numbers every label that thinks they can get a Wayne/Juelz or Hot Boys reunion or T-Wayne album on shelves will shell out a big advance and try to make it happen, but I'm not holding my breath.

some dude, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

CASSSSH FLOOOOOO

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)

Ace is a halfway capable rapper

haha yeah halfway capable is probably the highest praise you can give most florida rap dudes

still, i ended up loving "boss" by rick ross, that beat is so mega and a great hook

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:43 (seventeen years ago)

i would like a gif of t-pain doing his thing at a balcony : arms stretched pointing down swinging them low low low low. could be the new pdiddy+mase dance gif

Sébastien, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

Wayne/Juelz or Hot Boys reunion or T-Wayne album on shelves

this would be an AMAZING version of our future

i ended up loving "boss" by rick ross, that beat is so mega and a great hook

that shit was always crack

kid mush, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

"Boss" would be a dope album track, but it felt kinda forced as a single, and that sputtering "boss boss b-boss" bridge was like the sound of T-Pain running out of ideas epitomized.

some dude, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

"boss" might be my favorite rap single of the year. it's between that, "say yeah" and "put on" i think. iirc deej clowned me for posting the boss youtube before anyone knew what it was and big upping the beat. crazy that it came from fuckin jr rotem. it's great though, the fact that it's basically just voices cooing.

i wouldn't bet on t-wayne ever dropping either. they say it's called He Rap, He Sing, but c'mon it took him 3 years to get carter III out so i wouldn't hold my breath. dedication 3 will drop before anything.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 2 July 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

how bout Rappas Ternt Robots

kid mush, Wednesday, 2 July 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

yeah Rotem occasionally comes with some fire. still pretty impressed by the "Bust It Baby Pt 2" beat in spite of myself.

as someone who wants to t-pain further take over the world, im kinda disappointed that "can't believe it" is the first single from thr33 ringz cuz it's gonna flop (a little too sleepy + does the world really want THREE t-wayne singles?) but shit is really growing on me, esp the hilarious verses (ima put you in the mansion/ somewhere in wiscansin). could do w/o the wayne verse and still think this would be a bomb album track but whatever. thr33 ringz is gonna be a classic

J0rdan S., Monday, 28 July 2008 03:13 (seventeen years ago)

"Can't Believe It" is decent up until the Wayne verse, but yeah, doesn't sound like a hit at all even given the pedigree.

not a Lil Mama teenpop booster at all and hated "Shawty Get Loose," but "What It Is (Strike A Pose)" might be my favorite T-Pain track of the year so far.

i think im reaching tape store/cassie levels of t-pain fandom here

J0rdan S., Monday, 11 August 2008 07:03 (seventeen years ago)

why is your fandom peaking now, do you think his last few months have been on the level of what he did on '07? I'm still looking forward to the new album, but if he doesn't take it to the next level with that shit and deliver something better than the singles so far I'm off the bandwagon.

some dude, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 03:19 (seventeen years ago)

how is there not a single mention on this thread of the totally amazing sensory overload that is Boom?!? some people might question the wisdom of bringing in T-Pain for a guest spot when you're already using the same exact vocoder effect on your own voice, but somehow, twice as much actually does end up equaling twice as good here.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i think "shawty get loose", "she got it", "cash flow" and "what it is (strike a pose)" (also "got money" but he's barely even in that) stack up pretty well with his guest spots from last year, and i like "can't believe it" a lot (mostly for the verses), at least a lot better than "bartender". mostly i was saying that just cuz on ilm im always bumping this thread w/ minimal responses that match my enthusiasm.

i think thr33 ringz is going be really really good, probably a little bloated, but there's a few people in pop music who i'd be interested in hearing totally go off the deep end, and he is one of them. idk if he's headed there or not, but in any event i think he has it in him to top epiphany, which i liked a lot but still seemed a little under what he's capable of doing. but yeah, mostly i made the reference to tape store cuz im always bumping the thread w/ super enthusiasm.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 13 August 2008 04:51 (seventeen years ago)

so here's tay dizm, the dude on the 2 pistols song that is less famous than 2 pistols himself. it's called "beam me up", with officer ross of course. always love to see the police reaching out to build a bridge with inner city youth.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDNOoAWjQRY

its a bangladesh beat and one of teddy's weirdest hooks in a minute: "my chevy sit so high up off the flo/i feel like im an alien in a ufo/i go ooooh weeeee ooohh"

J0rdan S., Sunday, 17 August 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

is it really that weird considering the t-wayne entente and that the occasional bit of space talk's been known to occur in his earlier stuff anyway? seems deeply uninspired to me.

r|t|c, Monday, 18 August 2008 01:17 (seventeen years ago)

compared to "the boss", "she got it", "cash flow", "got money" etc i'd say yeah, it's one of the weirder things he's tried to push to radio in a while, and not really cuz of the "oooh weee ooooh" part ("mrs. officer", etc). it sounds really drugged

J0rdan S., Monday, 18 August 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago)

not saying its necessarily "inspired" though

Though this alone doesn’t necessarily ruin a concert. T-Pain proved this in his set—for the most part, he didn’t even pretend to sing. Rather he played a ringleader, bringing out a contortionist, dancing midgets (one of them a mini-Britney Spears who actually stripped), and a fire-eater who set her pasties aflame. With each successive spectacle, the audience got more hyped.
