Seeing Scott Seward's collection has made me realise that I have a fetish for seeing shelves full of records.

Probably because I am living and working so far away from where my own is stored.
My vinyl is all in a locked storage space on Van Dam Street off Varrick and in my mother's Long Island basement.

All my records and all but maybe 20 CDs have been in a storage space for six months while we look for a new place to live. This was tolerable until my ipod crashed because the backup is in storage too. So for me this thread is more like, Take a mental picture of your record collection and weep.

Will - yes, they're Ikea Traby. We have rather a lot of Traby cubes (some with doors and drawer inserts) - books, DVDs, magazines, kids' shoes, camera gear, financial files, photo albums, they've all ended up in Traby. If I look at my Flickr stats my most popular Yahoo Image referrals are searches for "Ikea Traby"!
This is the only photo I have showing the CD cabinets - this was well over a year ago (you can see yet more Traby on the right). We seem to have set up so many obstacles to prevent the kids getting in there that we're fairly discouraged from going in there ourselves. As a result we just have about 100 CDs permanently stacked in various places and that's all we play...

So what's the box set two to the right of Rhino's Sugar Hill box (and after a Stones one, I believe)? It looks like it says WHITNEY. And it looks like it's on Arista. A Whitney Houston box set??

Um, okay, you're making me self-conscious (about my records, I mean). I'm not trying to "win"! Honest.
Anyway, Kevin, damn good eye--it is Whitney indeed. My collection is alphabetized, but not the box sets (of which I don't own that many anyway). The Whitney box was actually a promo/freebie from when I worked at HMV. I distinctly remember it was sitting in this promo box for WEEKS--no one else wanted it or no one wanted to be seen with it--I was thrilled to bring it home, but the truth is, I've yet to play it. It's four 12" remix singles, with GREAT labels (each one featuring her FACE).
Yeah, the Spector box sets too long, but so is every box set ever released, except maybe the Doo Wop Box and that Stones singles box you spotted... even the Sugarhill box (between Dylan biograph and the Stones), I really lose interest on or about the third disc.

Will try to grab some photos of my grandfather's record room tomorrow - several thousand country and bluegrass 45s, 78s and LPs, cassettes he made of the 78s to save wear. Now that my grandmother's moved into an assisted living center, the job of figuring out what's in there was dumped on me. Found a dozen Louvin Brothers LPs (incl. Satan Is Real - that one's going in a frame on my wall).

I have about 350 (CDs) right now and would like something (preferably Ikea) that'd hold up to 6 or 700. Any recommendations, folks?
For years I've poked around IKEA looking for something with a small footprint + high capacity. It seems, however, that IKEA's taking its cues from the downturn in record sales: plenty of options for small(er) collections, few to none for larg(er) collections.
The best, widely-available racks I've come across are manufactured by Boltz. For $199.00 USD, you can get yourself their accurately named CD Rack 600:
http://www.boltz.com/images/products/largeimages/cd600_large.jpg
Obviously a significant dollar investment, but the biggest upside, in my ever-hoarding view, is that it's "expandable to grow with your collection."
― dblcheeksneek, Saturday, 12 January 2008 14:38 (eighteen years ago)
Ioannis - Don't even get me started on the bookshelves! Two copies of Double Trouble--gotta love those remainder bins. And a blue copy of the RS Record Guide--nice. Also, what is Essential Defenders? (Great pics btw.)
Kevin, you're right about the Sparks 45 peeking through ("The Number One Song in Heaven")--I knew you'd come through.
― sw00ds, Saturday, 12 January 2008 15:00 (eighteen years ago)
I don't have a camera, thought mine would involve a hideous pile of records and cds on my floor, all heaped together with guitar pedals and half taken apart guitars, books, dirty socks and underwear, empty bags of potato chips, empty root beer cans, soldering equipment, so on, so forth...
The racks themselves are half full at best.

― Ioannis, Saturday, 12 January 2008 15:34 (eighteen years ago)
Ah, cool, I have a somewhat ratty copy of the red one also, but have been on a years-long search for the blue.
I'm trying to identify every book on your shelf--can get most of the top but get lost elsewhere. We have a lot of overlap in our collections. The two white spines to the left of the Tosches' reader: I can't guess at the one right next to it, but is the one next to that the Melody Maker anthology?
― sw00ds, Saturday, 12 January 2008 15:54 (eighteen years ago)
Also, I can't identify the book sandwiched in between the two Bangs collections.
― sw00ds, Saturday, 12 January 2008 15:55 (eighteen years ago)
Hah! The white-cover Toches book would be The Devil and Sonny Liston--not exactly music related, but it is by Toches (and a great read besides), so what the hell.
Bangs be between the two Bangs books; it's a Brit edition of Psychotic Reactions.

Hands down greatest thread ever! It's like being invited over to all y'all's pads. Many observations/questions.
Ioannis - amaaaaaazing! That Springsteen live box is an annoyance since it seems to be the ONLY record that sticks out from the shelves. And thus if someone asks one question about music, it's "So you like Springsteen?" "Amongst other things..."
My copy of that Dave Marsh 1001 singles book looks almost EXACTLY like yours. Blasé writing (save for the "Soldier Boy" entry - thanx Matos!) AND blasé gluing??
What's the long thing resting on top of the part of the shelf that includes the Springsteen live box? Sorta looks like that Rhino Once in a Lifetime thang.
I'm a comics geek also!
Ok that explains why I never heard of that Avengers box set.
Feel free not to answer this: Is it easy to find books in English where you live or did you purchase most of these via internet or mail order or whatever?
the Melody Maker anthology?
There's a Melody Maker anthology??? Please to explain.
Exact opposite for me. Although if it's any consolation, someone smashed a fly into the Rush entry. It's too gross to even look at. I may never know what John Swenson or whoever thought of Hemispheres.
― Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 12 January 2008 20:16 (eighteen years ago)
What! You mean to say you didn't notice all the Chess boxes (Muddy, Wolf, Berry, etc.) and The Anthology of American Folk Music mixed in with all the records? Hmm, methinks you and Alfred have Springsteen on the brain.
BTW, this is what's resting atop them there records (someday I'll even take the time to read it. Really!):
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Acme-Novelty-Library-Chris-Ware/dp/0224077023/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1200169933&sr=8-3
And yeah, I do most of my shopping online; it's just WAY more convenient that way for me.

Kevin - For me, this Dead record (to the left of the Bruce box) is even more glaringly noticeable in that pic:

Oh gawd, I'd die. It's sorta like taking a picture of yourself to see how fat you really are. My Adorno would kick in and I'd just get depressed.
And I can't even see that Dead record.
― Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 12 January 2008 21:02 (eighteen years ago)
Really? You don't notice the white & blue spine glaring out at you about a quarter of the way in (from the left) on the same shelf as the Bruce box?
― Ioannis, Saturday, 12 January 2008 21:10 (eighteen years ago)
Oh! I thought you meant immediately to the left of The Boss. Yes, I see it now.
Most noticeable spine ever (on a record that is NOT a box set or ever a 2-record set): The Go-Go's: Vacation

Sigh, my photo would just be of cardboard boxes stacked in the basement on the one hand, and a hard disk on the other. How sad. Destined to stay that way until we take over our tenants' apartment in circa 2010.

― scott seward, Saturday, 12 January 2008 22:47 (eighteen years ago)
if i were rich, like, really rich, i would buy a library-sized building and house the biggest hall of records you ever did see. and people could come to listen to whatever they wanted. and make copies of anything they wanted. for free. you could probably buy most of the premier vinyl collections on earth for less than the cost of a jumbo jet and a matisse or two. a boy can dream can't he!

That is by and far the sleekest CD rack I have ever seen. I would so love to own it, but alas I am officially a Poor College Student, and can't really spend $200 on anything at all, let alone a CD rack. I honestly really don't want to spend more than $60, which is pushing it, but I'm determined that it can be done. I'd get a normal bookshelf, but I don't like how deep the shelves usually are.
― Stevie D, Sunday, 13 January 2008 05:28 (eighteen years ago)
look on your local craigslist - furniture section, or cds/dvd/vhs, or just search for "cd rack" "media rack" "cd shelf" etc. - and check daily til you find something good for cheap. works great in college!

Kevin, the MM book David M links to is the one I was referring to. It's a pretty cool book, though not the sort of thing you sit down and read--more a reference guide.

in order to get into the cupboard and take this quick snap, i had to move the washing-line, the ironing basket and the ironing board. which says it all, really. i don't think i've played a vinyl record in more than two years now (whereas 15 years ago i spat on CDs as the work of the devil and refused to entertain the notion of anything other than 12 inches of groove).
http://sparky.thehold.net/pix/080113records.jpg
the CDs at the top are two piles deep, and pretty much as precarious as they look (as mrs fiendish found to her cost while trying to get some wrapping paper before christmas). there are neat little piles of CDs elsewhere across the house, and another shelf in the bedroom; i considered taking pictures of some of them, but i really should be revising for an exam.
anyway, yeh. a rather sad historical document, i guess: vinyl on a par with a copy of clarisworks 4.0 on 3.5" disks :(
i went through a phase of MP3ing as many records as i could bear to do in a day (such a time-consuming process); then i discovered slsk and realised that perhaps it wasn't really necessary.

Here's the sad pathetic state of my records. 99.9% are in boxes @ work. CDs and stuff too.
Interesting new Ikea cab for gear and records (left side is mine, right is my girls). Gear piled on top will go on top shelf (see drill and stuff) after I borrow a hole saw this afternoon). 1200s will go on top w/mixer.
Other photo is by the desk. Shelves being replaced by similar, albeit taller, cab so we don't hafta LOOK at all this stuff all the time. Mixer and 78 ttbl (not shown) will fit inside with printer etc. Typical Chicago-style hutch w/books on right. 1200 on chair for finishing ripping tango wax from Buenos Aires trip LAST YEAR (no, it's not been sitting there all that time... only a couple of weeks.
The cabs come in all stacking modular sizes so we can add another half-size unit next to the horizontal one if we need. All wall mountable too if you like and many diff door styles.
Had hell of a time finding something that was suitable for records and wide enough for the 1200s that we could afford.
Will attempt to avoid submitting pictures of boxes containing 1000s of lonely wax and CDs from my office (sigh)
― factcheckr, Sunday, 13 January 2008 17:53 (eighteen years ago)
Yeah, I'm joshing. I do work in the securities industry--though I've never completed the course, and probably never will--but it holds next to no interest for me. Other than the fact that it pays the bills.

Ned, that can't be everything, can it? (No...)
Factcheckr, fascinating! What's that stick in the pic of the open Ikea cab? Looks like it's broke.
Until VERY recently, we had the same cheap ass VCR and DVD player. Loved the VCR (I think we bought three altogether) but it sadly died last month. We couldn't find it again or ndeed a stand alone VCR. So we bought a VCR-DVD combo which gave me an excuse to store away the cheap ass DVD player which I hated.
DVD next to cab: Because I Said So starring Diane Keaton and Mandy Moore.
I don't see the 1200 on the chair in the last pic. Is the ibook resting on it?
And that's great that your job can double as storage. I hope it's a long term job.
Rock Hardy -
Who's the yellow figure five shelves down on the left? It looks like a sexier Homer Simpson.

Never heard of This is Uncool: The 500 Greatest Singles Since Punk and Disco. Is the writing good?
What's the green book to the left of Classic 80s Pop?
Is the Fascinating Rhythm book a Gershwin bio?
Didn't even know there was a Rick Johnson anthology.
Best book up there: Like Punk Never Happened
― Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 13 January 2008 22:20 (eighteen years ago)
Beardsley is correct. Couldn't fit on another shelf, I guess.
This is Uncool... Ehhh. Some of it's okay. I liked the intro and was gearing up for a good read, but I lost some interest (I'm planning to finish it eventually). One of Gary Mulholland's aims with the book is to provide a counter-narrative of sorts to Dave Marsh's singles book, but it strikes me as surface kind of difference at best.
The book beside Classic 80s Pop is Michael Bracewell's England is Mine, which I think I've picked up three times now and given up on quickly (though I'm waiting in the mail for a copy of his new Roxy Music book).
Fascinating Rhythm--yeah, a Gershwin bio... And the Rick Johnson anthology is excellent. Put together in a kind of haphazard way, but it doesn't work against it in my view... Long been a fan of Like Punk Never Happened.

Actually I agree with Momus on the general point -- having (finally) set up a 1 TB drive and importing all sorts of things into it as quickly as I can swing it, I'd much rather be moving THAT than boxes of CDs again whenever the time comes for said move. I wonder if it also has something to do with looking at a heap of stuff and thinking, "Well, who am I saving it for in the end, really?"

i don't care about the end. and i don't care about CDs. if all my CDs exploded tomorrow, i wouldn't cry. and i love a lot of them! but i adore everything about records. sound, look, etc. i would cry if they died. but when i die? who cares. throw them in the dump. or first come first served.
― scott seward, Sunday, 20 January 2008 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

Very true! I'm also finding though that I'm doing the same now with all the old files I'm putting into the drive -- my last.fm plays will likely get a little more random here soon enough. But this isn't meant to be exclusionary, it's more that there are further options now. Which I'm all for!

having (finally) set up a 1 TB drive and importing all sorts of things into it as quickly as I can swing it, I'd much rather be moving THAT than boxes of CDs again whenever the time comes for said move.
A 1 TB drive might be better pragmatically in a relocation/move...but aesthetically I'd rather look at a record or cd colection than a hard drive.
But I'm a bit surprised to see this line from Momus. It's no doubt more convenient to have digitised images of paintings, but I wouldn't think much of the National Gallery in London if they disposed of their collection and put it on a hard drive.

Both have their places. I rather like the look of the drive on top of my hundred-year-old desk.

I know a ton of people who are just now starting to get into vinyl. It doesn't seem dead at all. This also seems tied to the growing noise metal folk thing that releases tons of vinyl and is growing slowly beyond guys with beards.

So true! Moving far away now and taking as little as I can, selling at least half my collection (to pay for moving the other half)... No longer DJing much, so any incentives to keep so much dusty plastic evaporated.
― blunt, Thursday, 24 January 2008 09:36 (eighteen years ago)
I had to move one of those cabinets when they came to install the new internet hookup. They needed access to an outlet. Each cabinet is three bins wide by five high. It was no problem at the time, taking all the records out and putting them back in. But I must have strained something 'cause I could hardly walk for the next two days. Moving the whole collection would be an enterprise. They are a presence.
― Thus Sang Freud, Thursday, 24 January 2008 12:17 (eighteen years ago)
Jesus, Thus Sang Freud, that looks amazing.
I want to totally purge myself of all this "stuff". as beautiful as Thus Sang Freud's pic looks, man, i just can't keep doing this. it's literally and figuratively weighing me down.
I know what you mean--and there's nothing in the world worse than moving day, trust me--but I've actually come to love my record collection not even so much as music but as comforting furniture. Not being flippant--I don't play the things often, but I love having them around, and I do take some weird comfort in knowing that they're there. (I also just purchased a USB turntable recently, which I think may have the curious effect of rekindling my interest in listening to the things, while making the transformation into mp3s complete, at least until the next thing comes along--started transferring all sorts of cool songs from compilations last night I'd never even listened to before.)
― sw00ds, Thursday, 24 January 2008 16:10 (eighteen years ago)
I meant to say "the curious dual effect"
― sw00ds, Thursday, 24 January 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)
speaking of dying, i can't imagine right now who i'd in fact leave my record collection to. if he have kids, it'll obviously be them--IF they have any interest in the things. I imagine for some people it would be more of a liability "inheriting" a few thousand records, many of them scratched up and clawed on the spines by various cats.
― sw00ds, Thursday, 24 January 2008 16:14 (eighteen years ago)
Argh - "if WE have kids" not "he"
also, when i was transfering songs last night from LPs and 45s to mp3, I have to say--I totally started to believe, for the first time in my life, the cliché about how much "warmer" vinyl sounds. Even through my small computer speakers, the sound coming off the turntable had soooo much presence. it's possible i was just expecting it to, but i don't think so. so maybe what i said above ain't entirely true--maybe i will start listening to records more often again.
― sw00ds, Thursday, 24 January 2008 16:19 (eighteen years ago)
i have a kid already, im hoping he will be interested in taking mine. he has a small collection built up already, about 10 records, but he is only 6. and he enjoys listening to my records with me! i love it. he wants to start making some electro, i told him he has to be a little big bigger before he can touch the mpc.

I've got two of the Expedit 2x4 shelves on the way. Oh so excited. And I'm hoping my 3-year-old will want my records when I go. He certainly is interested in driving his cars on them now, much to my chagrin. The other day I had thrown away a cd-r that had screwed up during an attempted burn. He was under the desk playing and found it in the trash can. So he grabbed it and ran to me in the kitchen and said, as if someone was about to be in big trouble, "Dada, Mama throwed away dis record!"

Just out of curiosity, how do you all organize your music collection.
Right now I have enough (read so few) that I can put them all in chronological order (of when I acquired them), and can remember where everything goes, but obsessive compulsiveness is making me want to either organize by label or by artist, even though this probably would make things more confusing. I'd be interested in hearing what ways people with infinitely more records than I'll probably ever have do it.

I'm somewhere between the boutique and the insane sprawl level - 2,500 LPs, maybe 1,000 singles and a few hundred Cds under the desk in my bedroom. Organisation is loose, but without even this minimum it would be a huge headfuck - as it is stuff goes missing and I waste hours flicking through every shelf.
One shelf is Jazz, alphabetically with no sub- divisions by genre, so Peggy Lee sits next to Steve Lacy, Sinatra by Archie Shepp. Next shelf is Soul/ Rn'b/ Hip-Hop (embarrassingly little) - again alphabetically, although a little disorganised, and compilations willy-nilly at the end.
Next one down is Brazil/ Latin/ Irish Folk/ Reggae/ African - not further organised; under a 100 of each so not too difficult to find as long as stuff goes back.
Half a shelf of Country, and then a shelf and half of Rock/ Pop nearly completely unorganised, although some artist have been grouped. And boxes of random crap behind the sofa/ in the bedroom.
Singles are a mess.

Not too bad considering I'm not yet 22, and 80% of the vinyl (which excludes the 80 or so records I've sold) has all been bought in the last 2 years. I should have a quite impressive looking collection when I'm about 28-30 and move into a place with hardwood floors. http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/7702/1111kfm.jpghttp://img685.imageshack.us/img685/586/2222zvm.jpg

Also, can we morph this into a general furniture thread?

The thing my TV is sitting on is from habitat, and still available. Pricy, though - we got it on sale about 2 years ago for around £350, but it's about £500 RRP now. Top left bit is a drawer, bottom bit is a cabinet that opens - DVD player, Playstation, boardgames, and handheld hoover live in there.

Nice looking setups, Scik Mouthy and EDB. But why the lack of bass? Are there subwoofers hiding out somewhere?
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 5 July 2010 16:13 (fifteen years ago)
A; I live above someone, and B; honestly don't need anymore bass - the speakers, amplifier, and CD player output plenty. I like a taut, natural bass sound rather than enormous anus-opening trembles.
― Captain Ostensible (Scik Mouthy), Monday, 5 July 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)
Look at my floor! I rigged up an old stereo which has a nice low end (set to the bassiest EQ'ing it can muster) as a makeshift sub. Pretty ghetto, but it actually sounds really nice; I also agree with natural bass comment, it's too easy to upset the balance with muddy bass). Living in a big house all my life has spoiled me, I fear having to deal with neighbours.
I love that Becher poster too; frankly it's amazing I still like the posters in my room, given that I bought them at 16 years old.
Also, I should have posted better shots so you can clearly see the vintage ninja turtles figurine on the bookshelf on the left side of my room.

Had an HHB CD recorder at work in my last job, ancient but awesome, cooed everything, even stuff newer players had copy-protection issues with. The button layout on the fascia pretty perfectly matched a Pioneer minidisc deck I once had, made me think perhaps they had the same parent company.

― oɔsıqɐu (nabisco), Monday, 5 July 2010 21:34 (fifteen years ago)
I don't know if this thread is making me think I need a lot more records (which most of you certainly have) or a lot fewer (because I can't keep even my paltry and rarely-played collection tidy). krakow's 7" pile has left me wanting to hear Urusei Yatsura, though. And I could really do with a real hi-fi rack and not just a corner of a cheap MFI desk.
This thread could be expensive.
― atoms breaking heart (a passing spacecadet), Monday, 5 July 2010 21:56 (fifteen years ago)
Yatsura 7''s are relatively cheap, excellent listening and come in all kinds of funky colours. Highly recommended.

Heh. Eensy teensy lil' 2-way speakers on stands are not made to produce full range. It's not taut, it's lacking! Can't tell who makes yours, but they probably have two or three other full-range floorstanding speakers in that series, and if it's a good brand, the bass should be plenty natural without being overkill. Sorry this is off-topic -- if anyone wants to discuss bass on a new thread, I'd be up for it.
― Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)
It's a value-for-money thing - if you can deal with roll-off below about 55Hz, then $xxx gets you much better mid-range, top-end, imaging, etc than the same amount spent on floorstanders. Monitors plus a well-placed/well-integrated sub is definitely the way to go, but not if you have downstairs neighbours... Us Brits don't have that much living space, y'know.
This is a very old photo - four years ago now - but the system hasn't really changed since. Click through for details...

I guess if I were in the middle of nowhere we could have a sprawling estate, but here in Chicago we're stuck with 900 sq ft condo with downstairs and upstairs neighbors. I've had downstairs neighbors for the full 18 years I've lived in the city, and had a subwoofer just as long. Subs are good in that I can turn them down in the evening for the neighbors' sake (headphones go on after 10 on weekdays), and good for explosions in movies, but found that full range is the way to go for music.
― Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 04:04 (fifteen years ago)
Fair enough. That's why subs are so appealing - the control. I'd agree that good bass is the root of good reproduction; the problem with a lot of mid-price floorstanders is that, while they might be moving some air below 80Hz, it's pretty flabby and ends up throwing a blanket over the whole sound. Pleasant enough though - never tired of my pal's Castle Chesters (though he insisted my Heybrook monitors just threw out so much more detail).

I have no photos of my CD collection to post right now, however this thread has shamed me into tidying up and making a start on some more organisation. I have a very small flat, so things are stored wherever there is space.
― MichaelJLambert, Wednesday, 7 July 2010 19:05 (fifteen years ago)
As you can see, storing CDs sensibly is not really my forte. At the moment they fill three CD towers and one bookshelf, but there still isn't enough room for them, so some of them are lying on my writing desk and nearby. At the moment my vinyls are in a cupboard, because they don't fit anywhere in here.

I guess this is a comparatively small record collection, though my family would say otherwise. I try to keep everything fitting on these shelves (about 7' x 8' total) so I do a bit of a purge/refinement every so often. Right now roughly 1000 each of lps, 45s, and cds. And some 10"s, tapes, books, etc. thrown in for good measure. And our dog Jolene.

Looks as if my record collection will be going into storage. :(
I've been begrudgingly coming to terms with this, but until we find ourselves a bigger place to live it just isn't working out to have my collection taking up this much space.

You can start a thread called "Take a picture of your record collection in storage and post it on ilm" so we can still ooh and ahhh over it.
Sorry to joke. That would be rough. I only moved the cream of my record collection to the Outer Banks and put the rest in storage but only until we get our year round rental house next month. We came out here with just what would fit in our cars for our furnished winter rental but I made sure it fit my turntable and some of my fave records. I can't wait to get the rest of my stuff next month because it has been two months of just two crates and it ain't cutting it for me.

Thanks Sanford -- that's our only old fan, about 90 or so years old I think. It's more powerful on low than most other fans are on high and has so little protection from digit slicing. We have a 2 year old in the house so it has moved to "highest spot in the house" status. The two year old also doesn't like that fat, red face on the McSweeney's so she keeps pushing it in as far as it'll go. "No face, no face."
Jon -- I was running into the same thing here a few years ago and finally resigned to just never have a massive collection, rather to just frequently sell stuff I wasn't super-wild about (or stuff that crossed a point on the graph that maps "how much I like it" vs "people are paying crazy dollars on ebay for this"). I came to the acceptance that if I sell something and then later really end up wanting to hear it, I'm sure I can find/buy it again (or resigned to be happy with the mp3s/flacs). Which isn't to say I don't still drool over some of pics upthread (TS Freud's, for example)...
And missing from that photo are a couple hard drives and 100+ dvd-rs.

Well, the good thing is that my wife is entirely understanding and supportive of my music collection and she is 100% on board with me having some sort of "music room" in our next house. Its just that the economy and reality has pushed that off more than we originally thought, so I'll just have to deal with the temporary storage. I'm not heartbroken, but its weird to imagine that I'll soon be boxing all this stuff up.

I have a music room. It also serves as the guest room. I finally acquiesed and replaced the couch with a day bed & trundle. It's only a matter of time before the media center gets moved out and replaced with a dresser. So even having a room doesn't mean you get to keep it!

Our parents bought us records (Free to be You and Me, Chipmunk Punk, Muppet everything) and we listened to theirs (Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel, Moody Blues) and my aunt's (Elvis Costello, Queen, Grease sndtrk). So what I have now started with all those, and then I bought my first lp with lawn mowing money in 1982 when I was 9 (Men At Work's Business as Usual). The CDs started in 1988 (New Order's Substance) when I got a cd player. I regularly sell off / give away lps/cds/tapes so it's kinda morphed a bit through the years.
I'll second or third the hanging out with records/beers/etc!

Oh say it isn't so, Tony! You're not ditching your CDs in their entirety, are you? I just can't bring muself to do that, I only prune stuff I don't want anymore.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Thursday, 2 June 2011 18:37 (fourteen years ago)
I pruned in a big way. I sold about 6,000 CDs over the course of a few months to Reckless and Dusty Groove. I got some box sets/reissues in trade, but mostly cash. I still have 1,500 of my absolute favorites, and deluxe editions and such. The only time I ever actually play CDs is in the car, and most of the time it's a burned CDR of new albums I want to listen to. I just couldn't justify the space that they took up. I needed to make room so that we can more easily make our condo look nice if we want to sell, or have room if we breed, ha. Two years ago I ripped everything to FLAC, and listen to my music on my NAS, transmitted via router to Squeezebox receivers in nearly every room in the house. It's all backed up to 3TB drives at work too.
I also just got rid of a bunch of music books at After-Words books on E. Illinois just last night. There's also a box of free books that they didn't buy because of condition/stock value.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 3 June 2011 16:11 (fourteen years ago)
Although by now someone from the offices of The Reader next door most likely snatched them up, ha.
― Fastnbulbous, Friday, 3 June 2011 16:13 (fourteen years ago)
Sigh... I hear what you're saying, I rarely play CDs in the house too. But every now and then I find cause to look at liner notes, without which I'd lose alot of key information down the road. I'll have to ditch the jewel cases in the near future, which will save tons of space, but even now when I download something I like I make an effort to obtain a physical CD. I have about 4000 CDs and that's my limit - when new stuff comes in each year, I sell stuff in order to make it all fit.
― Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 3 June 2011 20:42 (fourteen years ago)
Yeah, I'm struggling with what to do with my collection. I'm slowly creeping up to 5,000 CDs and about 300 LPs. We had to clean out our house a little in the effort to sell it, so as of now all but my LPs and my most recently purchased CDs are in storage at a friend's house. Luckily I've archived the majority of them but, of course, I keep remembering stuff I want to hear that I hadn't ripped yet. Anyway, it is looking more and more like we'll be stuck in this house for another year or two so I'm trying to cope with not having my collection easily accessible for a long period of time. Kinda sad, but I suppose thats a first world problem and I shouldn't get too upset about it. I'm just looking forward to finally getting our new house with a dedicated music area, whenever that may be.

I sold two of my shelves, and now trying to give away the entertainment center monstrosity for free. Next step after the space is freed up is to find new furniture. I should hire SickMouthy to pick it out and decorate, heh. Another issue is at some point the office might have to be converted to a baby room. It probably wouldn't appreciate a sweet sound system and cds for another 10 yrs.
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 6 June 2011 18:34 (fourteen years ago)
XXP Regarding liner notes, that's why I keep most of my reissues and deluxe editions. However most new albums offer next to nothing for interesting liner notes, and thus little incentive to keep them.
― Fastnbulbous, Monday, 6 June 2011 18:43 (fourteen years ago)
"At some point" you "might" need a baby room? That's an awful lot of ambiguity for family planning! Is there a little reviewer in your near future? Babys definitely appreciate great sound systems - they can hear the high-end we lost!

Not including the Gas boxset on the floor, there is only one identifiable album in this photo, see if you can name it (hint: it's neither a CD or a record).

scott! are those 70s pioneer speakers in pic #2? They look quite a bit like the ones I now have upstairs that I finally appropriated from my Dad
― mh, Saturday, 4 February 2012 20:54 (fourteen years ago)
yes, they are! and pioneer turntable. i like that turntable. i brought my rega to the store.
order? um, uh...my 12 inches are all in one place. and most of the jazz and blues...but i've got lke a dozen or more boxes that are all random and not even on shelves at the moment. luckily, i'm a pretty random listener.
― scott seward, Saturday, 4 February 2012 21:23 (fourteen years ago)
actually mine are nearly identical except on the side where you have two little speakers there are two knobs on mine
― mh, Saturday, 4 February 2012 21:54 (fourteen years ago)
oh and everything in the big closet is classical.
that little closet behind the door was a secret closet! we didn't even know it was there until we moved in. the door was always open before we moved in and we didn't see it. gotta love a secret bonus space.
― scott seward, Saturday, 4 February 2012 22:14 (fourteen years ago)
I haven't really been in the unfinished attic or crawlspace areas of my house yet and I keep hoping I'll find something secret like that. a cool little space, or maybe some records. hopefully not anything or anyone dead
― mh, Saturday, 4 February 2012 22:15 (fourteen years ago)
i've just been slow about buying more bookshelves. and getting books out of there. then i'll have more room. get some more record shelves that will fit. i have some nice wooden ones at the store like the one that is in that closet. then i could get stuff off of the floor. hasn't been a priority because i spend so much time at the store...moving and finding room for records...
― scott seward, Saturday, 4 February 2012 22:23 (fourteen years ago)
I got more furniture and the corner where I had a giant tub of CDs is full now so I have a bunch of stuff sitting in the middle of the room

my question: where do you guys find these perfectly vinyl suited shelves? ikea? i buy everything online so i have no idea what to search for. it's especially hard considering i want something w/ solid shelves - nothing that you can adjust. they're great for books but always seem to deteriorate after a year, the weight putting everything on a slight slope that nags the hell out of me but i imagine nobody has ever noticed, ever
― kelpolaris, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 20:36 (thirteen years ago)

Thanks so much for reviving this thread Z S, re-scrolling is always a hoot. Cataloging your stuff in discogs sounds like a lot of work but a lot of good work! Would be nice to spend a fixed evening/week or so in my 'music attic' - while I love the place I'm not spending as much time there as I would like, it being on the second floor and all..
kelpolaris, those solid shelves are indeed ikea's. Expedit is the name of the series. Available in 2x2, 1x5, 2x4, 4x4 and 5x5.

Cataloging your stuff in discogs sounds like a lot of work but a lot of good work!
yeah, it was actually kinda fun! when i was going through my records, i'd do 20 at a time, and while i'd catalog them i'd pick one out of that batch that i'd never really gave much time to and give it a fair listen. i can now say that side 1 of arlo guthrie's Arlo album is...pretty fucking terrible! also, i revived the discogs thread to discuss it, but there's a nice feature on discogs that shows you the minimum, median and maximum value for each of your records, based upon the last 10 user transactions on discogs. pretty cool.
― dexpresso (Z S), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 21:05 (thirteen years ago)
...so that's what's been keeping you from running ;-)
― willem, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 21:23 (thirteen years ago)
serious question :
can someone explain the need to catalogue collections in discogs (you are not along amongst people i have seen this z s, so this aint aimed at you !) ?
i mean beyond a "pissing up the wall" competition (which this thread is a worthy contender), i dont get it ..
― mark e, Wednesday, 5 December 2012 21:50 (thirteen years ago)
for me, at least, it has a few functions. for completists it can be a great resource. i'm slowly trying to get all the pylon records (there aren't many, which helps!) so it's a nice to be able to click on pylon on discogs and then quickly see what i have and what i'm still missing. discogs is also a good place to buy records, so it's really simple to look at your collection, see something you're missing but that you want, and put it on your "wantlist". then, whenever someone puts up that particular record for sale, you get a notification. also, it may be extremely lazy, but it's a easy way for me to "look" through my records and pick out something to play. my records are all tightly packed together these days so thumbing through them isn't very pleasant.
i'm not sure it's useful for pissing up the wall contests, because i don't think you can share your collection with others unless you're "friends" on discogs. and it appears that no one is friends on discogs.
― dexpresso (Z S), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 21:58 (thirteen years ago)
i'm also kind of obsessed with organization, at least when it comes to music. my mp3 folders are all meticulously organized, and i like to do the same for my records. it's fun to be able to sort them chronologically and realize you have virtually nothing from 1986 (or whatever)
― dexpresso (Z S), Wednesday, 5 December 2012 21:59 (thirteen years ago)

Just wanted to share this relatively recently acquired old bar set we got to store my records in a fun way/add something to our small living room in our small apartment.Bonus obligatory shot of our cute cat too.http://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc364/aerialnostalgia/photo3-4.jpghttp://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc364/aerialnostalgia/photo1-6.jpghttp://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc364/aerialnostalgia/photo3-5.jpghttp://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc364/aerialnostalgia/photo4-2.jpghttp://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc364/aerialnostalgia/photo4-1.jpghttp://i1208.photobucket.com/albums/cc364/aerialnostalgia/photo1-7.jpg

That is indeed one cute cat.
Those look good. How many records do they hold?
― Kitchen Person, Sunday, 23 March 2014 22:03 (eleven years ago)
She is!
Roughly 450? Not enough, ultimately. We wanted to find something interesting looking for the apartment rather than just straight storage. The upper left side opens to reveal a full original glassware set and a light that turns on- though the glasses are boxed up at the moment.
― Evan, Sunday, 23 March 2014 22:14 (eleven years ago)
That's a decent amount. I'll be looking out for something to store records in the near future. Something like that could work. At this point I'd probably need three of them.
― Kitchen Person, Sunday, 23 March 2014 22:42 (eleven years ago)
Good luck on your search! It takes a bit more dedication to find this sort of thing but we're happy with it. Tied the room together nicely.
― Evan, Sunday, 23 March 2014 22:53 (eleven years ago)
Evan those are the most beautiful record shelves I have seen!!!! Are they from the 50's or 60's?

It's the Indie Discography. I love my 80s - 90s indie.

Do you play your CDs directly? Or is most of it ripped to a computer already?
― Evan, Monday, 24 March 2014 14:26 (eleven years ago)
Directly. I have an iPod which I use to check out new stuff that gets sent to me before I purchase or delete.
― Loud guitars shit all over "Bette Davis Eyes" (NYCNative), Monday, 24 March 2014 14:29 (eleven years ago)
Good to make use of them! I've narrowed down my displayed collection to just my favorites that I don't also have on vinyl (or new CDs I've just bought).

― we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Monday, 24 March 2014 15:04 (eleven years ago)
It was my home up until two years ago, when my one-year-old started getting more mobile and a one-bedroom apartment wasn't cutting it anymore. That's actually a photo from the real estate listing. The baby toys were all jammed in a pile just to the right of the cabinet for the picture -- it was rarely that tidy that year.
― early rejecter, Monday, 24 March 2014 15:31 (eleven years ago)
Ha! Well it is still beautiful. I love the furniture and decoration.
― Evan, Monday, 24 March 2014 15:34 (eleven years ago)
OH, and thank you La Lechera
― Evan, Monday, 24 March 2014 18:03 (eleven years ago)
i have a make-your-own furniture book from the early 60s that teaches people how to make their own stereo cabinets and i have been hanging on to it in the event that i ever encounter a person who is both willing and able to make something like that for a modest fee.
― we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Monday, 24 March 2014 18:12 (eleven years ago)
Oh what a fantastic idea! Way better than endless ebay/craigslist browsing.
― Evan, Monday, 24 March 2014 18:17 (eleven years ago)
For an existing one, that is.
Though antique shop browsing is a bit more fun. Really sales-y antique store owners are less fun. Not sure how this all balances out.
― Evan, Monday, 24 March 2014 18:18 (eleven years ago)
I've inherited a big CD & record storage unit my dad made, it's in need of a new coat of paint but it's not bad & it's definitely achievable to do something w/ mdf or wood depending on yr joinery
― ogmor, Monday, 24 March 2014 18:41 (eleven years ago)
early rejecter, are those magnepans?
― naus, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 08:07 (eleven years ago)
i was thinking the same thinking the same thing, was recently deciding whether to go with Magnepans or in-wall speakers in a living room. The Maggies sound amazing as long as you stay in the sweet spot between the speakers.
I was all set to buy some Ikea Expedits for my vinyl collection after i move soon, but this thread has convinced me my records deserve real furniture. I have a hutch that looks like the top part of Evan's setup, except that all the doors are glass. It's currently in the dining room displaying fancy china we never use. I'd rather display rekkerds....
― Lee626, Tuesday, 25 March 2014 12:00 (eleven years ago)
Yep, they're Magnepans. They sound great, but like Lee says they do have a sweet spot -- and I was surprised at how small the sweet spot is. With this particular model (MMG) it's not so much your position between the speakers, but rather the vertical position of your ears -- i.e. they have to be right around the vertical center of the speakers for the best sound. I mounted them so that they're at the proper height when you're seated in the room, but it's amazing how dramatically the sound changes when you stand up. So they're much better suited to dedicated listening than just having music playing as you move around your home. And you really need a subwoofer and a relatively powerful amp to get the most from them. My brother-in-law has a pair of the big floor-standers (not sure which model) and they seem to be much more forgiving regarding positioning and sound fine without a subwoofer. Of course they're also as big as two adults, so not so easy to find a place for them in a lot of rooms.

AAAH Evan those are so nice. early rejecter, those look great too. Sweet TV, do you have a signal going to it or is it just decorative?

I have a large, walk-in cupboard in my living room which I'm starting to think of using to store my CDs and records, as I'm sick of them commandeering the entire living room wall space. I'm looking for inspiration - has anyone done this kind of thing? Or got any impressive photos from elsewhere?
The cupboard is a good size (I still need to measure it though) and very tall (Glasgow tenement), so if I got custom shelving put in up the ceiling it would probably hold everything with a modest space in the middle to walk in and select things.
