"Andorra" is a real grower...like it a lot

Dunno if I can say "classic" yet, but definitely not a dud. Though he is improving with every album he puts out, which is a rare and wonderful trait.

Amazing live ... much better than on record. A lot noisier, two drummers = live madness, etc.

Only "Milk of Human Kindness" is a classic, his other albums are too patchy. "Andorra" was too maximalist for me, but "Milk of Human Kindness" had more of a focus on rhythm, with some very Can-esque moments to balance things out rather than bells-ringing psych-pop from start to finish.

See, I'm of the mind that Up in Flames is his only front-to-back classic. Still one of my favorite records of the '00s. Milk of Human Kindness never really clicked with me, though I've given it plenty of time to sit. Andorra is fantastic as well, though slightly less so than Flames.

I find UIF a little too ADHD for me these days; I like the space, calmness and lower-keyness of MOHK and Andorra more, I think.

Start breaking my heart is a straight up classic. Sparse, fast and clever.

UIF is fairly patchy imho. MOHK a bit mawkish, as in it's not a clear progression on from UIF. Andorra is just fantastic. So dense and well thought out.

Roz, did you see him live? I've seen him a few times and he's great fun. Got to talk to him a bit after the last gig. Very friendly guy!

I still need to hear Andorra. I'm in the "Up In Flames = flawless" camp (no better album for lazy summer driving), but Milk of Human Kindness never really clicked with me.

I'm not mad about the 2007 Tour CD. I probably just need to give it another couple of goes.

2007's Andorra, the last album from Dan Snaith's ever-mutating psych-pop project Caribou, appeared on our year-end list and won Canada's Polaris Music Prize, so hopes are high for the follow-up. That follow-up will arrive April 20, when Merge (in North America) and City Slang (in the UK and Europe) releases his new album, Swim. The 4/20 release date feels oddly appropriate.

Snaith recorded the album in Wales and in Junior Boy Jeremy Greenspan's Hamilton, Ontario studio. Guest stars include a quartet of Toronto free-jazz horn players and Born Ruffians' Luke Lalonde, who sings closer "Jamelia". At this site, anyone who gives an email address can download opener "Odessa".

In a statement, Snaith described the album's sound thusly: "I got excited by the idea of making dance music that's liquid in the way it flows back and forth, the sounds slosh around in pitch, timbre, pan... Dance music that sounds like it's made out of water, rather than made out of metallic stuff like most dance music does."

So I went back and listened to Milk of Human Kindness after dismissing it long ago for not sounding more like Andorra. Everyone up thread who were championed this were totally right. I don't know that I'd say I'd prefer it over Andorra, or even Up in Flames (easily two of my favorite albums of the past 10 to 15 years) but this ranks right up there.

Dan Snaith is dream a boat I tell ya.

Has anyone been peeping Dan's dance edits on the Resista label under his "Daphni" alias? They've been pretty killer so far and i like that his love for African music translates into some very dancefloor friendly edits of songs by Balla et ses Balladins and the like. and then the track he just dropped on Jiaolong, which uses an Analog Africa track for some heavier techno business, is easily one of my favorites for the year.

I often find this with Manitoba, though. That if I hear just one track, I'm all "yeah, this is the best thing evah!" but it doesn't really hold my attention for a whole album's length. So I'd probably like them in other contexts, i.e. if they were in a DJ set or something.

Has anyone actually seen him DJ? I saw him on a boiler room webcast with Jamie XX I think. I liked it but hard to got measure of how into it crowd were.

I saw him do an allnighter with four tet in brixton. Weird crowd but he was great. (Hebden too.)

I really like the way the new track builds but never quite blows. I love tracks that do that. Is there a thread for songs that do that?

Stellar record. The single is my least favorite track but that's a minor quibble in an otherwise wonderful album. Mr. Snaith has done it again.

Shades of Junior Boys...but so much better. Sad ? Maybe. Moreso introspective. Gorgeous synth work and bass tones all over this thing.

I've only really listened late night on headphones so far, and once at my desk while working, but I'm pretty sure there's no brass anywhere, and no tumbling jazzy drum samples, either. Some violin on a couple of tracks? Had hoped Owen might sing on it but it seems like he played violin.

Silver really is amazing; that little vocal tick sample running through it ("hear it" or suchlike?) somehow really adds to the emotional tone rather than breaking it. And the synths, omg, so gorgeous.

Woke up listening to this and one obvi connection is early Joy Orbison...especially the more blissed out side of things. The slower trax have a deep Chicago influence buried in there. This album is going to be awesome to hear on the dancefloor. People are going to be lining up to remix this thing that's for sure. The cool thing is that even tho he is working on the clubbier side of the spectrum it doesn't sound at all disposable. It's very much crafted and written to endure.

Listening to the recording this morning, not sure about some of the vocals, but the production is amazing as usual.

Need to get to know this better, which will only really happen after I get the CD and live with it a lot, I guess, but I feel like it dips a bit in the middle; it falls into griddy, Daphni-esque stuff for a couple of tracks, but without the weird texture and intrigue of Bowls, say, or the edge-of-chaos-ness of Niobe, and loses some of the melody and emotion of the first few tracks and last few tracks. It kind of just sits there pulsing for a bit, which I'd normally love, but it's not grabbed me yet.

I think it's the title track, which reminds me of chunks of the last Four Tet album. It probably works really well in a club, and it sounds amazing phenomenologically, it just hasn't got the punctum, as Marcello would say, that his best stuff does. And the last minute doesn't quite go off like I'd hope.

Heard Tale of Us drop that remix in a set a couple weeks back, it stretches out and foregrounds the strengths of the original for a club or festival in just the right way.

Nice review Ned, unsurprisingly

Opening this up from a CD through big speakers and it sounds absolutely amazing, which is obviously no surprise. The bass is fabulous; I think he's learnt some lessons over the four years since Swim, which I still love but which occasionally lacked a little bottom-end.

Owen's down as playing violin on Silver, but I'm damned if I can pick out a 'natural' string sound; I'm assuming it's run through a pedal or something?

It's a rack unit thing. On "Silver" I'm using my "Penderecki" patch, you can hear 16-stages of pitch-shifting creating a string ensemble sound, then I sweep the expression pedal downward and the pitches expand outward by a couple semitones in each direction. It's a patch I've been using on everything these days.

Giving this my first couple listens. I love "Back Home" especially. Generally very good.

This is his best album I think, the first one I've been tempted to go back to, and his vocals are less intrusively awful than they were on parts of the last album. I still find myself wishing he wouldn't lean so much on certain production crutches (faded/dusty synth sounds, woozy detuned pads) though, at this stage they feel like aesthetic shorthand.

Love the whole thing but Silver is just astounding. Really enjoy Dan's production crutches tbh.

This is a lot better than anything he's done previously, the growing influence of club sounds really suits him. I much prefer this to the Daphni album, which was really enjoyable big dumb fun but felt functional rather than accomplished.

Listening to this for the first time gave me the same feelings I got on first listening to Four Tet's There Is Love In You (dancefloor direction, big step-up from previous work) so given how much more interesting Four Tet got from that point I'm really keen to see what's next.

I thought I heard a Kelly Polar drum sample in there somewhere.

This record is excellent -- really nice meld of the Daphni dance sound and that Caribou mood. Only complaint is that the extended mix of "Can't Do Without You" shoulda replaced the 4 minute version! Still great. Vinyl sounds especially great, too.

Owen: if you still around, are there any other recordings out there where you use this patch? It sounds amazing and I want to hear more of it.

Regarding Caribou: He's been interesting to follow since he called himself Manitoba but couldn't have guessed he'd be this good, I was expecting Kieran Hebden to become the better, bigger artist but Snaith has surpassed him in almost every level.

Well, yeah, I use it with almost every one of my clients these days tbh, esp. the ones with zero-budget. Dan wanted it because he likes the sound of direct piezo pickup violin recording, which is cool, because violinists typically can't stand that sound. As for the machine, when the pitches are close together it functions like the ensemble setting of an ARP Solina, and it expands outward to full microtonal clouds. There are no "proof of concept" recordings yet, unfortunately, but one day I'll get to it. I use it a lot live, both with my own shows and Foxes In Fiction, either as a rack thing or a scaled-down pedal board equivalent.

i've tried. many multiple listens and i don't find this to be anything special. i don't hate it or anything... just nothing stands out to me.

four tet is still a more interesting listen for me, good thing we don't have to choose between them.

Don't get me wrong, I love Four Tet. I just think that Caribou has gone farther with his sound while Kieran has been mostly distracted in all sorts of experimentation without an objective or signature sound in mind.

Caribou's output makes more sense as a whole and you can see clearly the evolution of his sound.Four Tet has been meandering here and there and it's a hit or miss for me. This is, of course, just my humble opinion.

Also, Caribou's live set is more interesting that Kieran's (who in my opinion is not great at dj sets) and that has definitely helped in making Caribou more 'significant'.

Snaith seems a little more focused somehow, like I can picture him putting a lot of stuff aside as "not a Caribou track," so that he winds up with a pretty distilled sound and concept. Kieran seems to put out more throwaway material.

And thanks Owen! Had no idea you collaborate on the Foxes on Fiction album. Loved their 2010 release, didn't know they had released a new one... a quick research tells me that it's only been released digitally and as a limited LP? Will it get a proper release?

Fantastic night! Hard to believe for me but I first saw Caribou/Manitoba over 12 years ago at Wonky. He was so friendly on the night then and what's just brilliant is not just how throughout the years he's stayed so sane but that even this evening, where he had played an amazing show to huge rock star adulation and could have wandered wandered off to the dressing room thinking 'job well done', he came out and spent time chatting and posing for pictures. How is he not more jaded?

His encore of "Sun" was (forgive pun) blistering! All of it, the new stuff, the slightly older songs - all brilliant.

This is great. It actually gave me the idea that it might be a fun ILM project to do our own sort of "skeleton key to our musical taste/DNA" ultralong spotify mixes, and then maybe like each person gets assigned to listen to one other person's mix -- not obligated to the whole thing but as much as they please.

Yeah not a lot of his prior stuff sounds like Our Love. Did you not like "Sun" though?

These are my fave tracks if that helps: Can't Do Without You, Silver, Dive, Second Chance, Julia Brightly, Kaili, Found Out, and maybe Hannibal. Sun doesn't do a ton for me.

I know this description isn't great, but there's almost a shoe-gazey sound on Second Chance.

This one leaked a couple of days ago at 320kbps and I couldn't resist listening to it. Loved it on first listen. Highlight for me besides the singles is "like I loved you".

I think the only thing I'm not crazy about is the album cover.

Why are more people not getting excited about this?

So far I'm admiring it but not feeling it (unlike his last few under the Caribou moniker, which were all immediate stunners). The vocal sampling/looping feels a little heavy-handed.

Absolutely blown away by this one - I don't know if anything can ever top Swim for me, but when the dust settles this is a likely my #2 Snaith joint.

Our Love was the first one I felt less than in love with, and this has jumped him straight back in there.

Thought it was great on first listen in the house. Was a little cooler on it when I listened again in the car, earlier.

I loved Our Love... that grabbed me immediately though there were some arrangement decisions in some of the songs that I felt held them back.

This one I need to give another proper listen to, but first pass it was gorgeous, if not less "catchy" than Our Love and Swim.

I've only heard New Jade so far but I would pay for a version with all the vocals removed.

Liking this a lot more than expected on first listen

Oh man, I love this. Like the latest James Blake, I feel like I like it a lot more than I should, it doesn't really break new ground, but the mood is incredible.

He's never been a better producer than he is on this every album, every single element sounds so good... except his voice which I don't think I'm ever going to get past, it just anchors everything in the emotionally lukewarm zone for me.

Is there a general consensus that Swim is his best one? It's clearly Andorra and then The Milk... and then a big gap imo

Thanks Moka - we're generally all pretty good at the moment but we've been through the mill for sure.

I have reservations about his voice, although it's normally not obstrusive enough to have any detrimental effect, and I wasn't expecting to be so into this from radio play of the singles (Never Come Back sounded exactly like a continuation of Our Love, and Home seemed too reliant on the sample, but they both work much better in context of the album for me) and early reports of how much he's singing on it, but it's actually working for me way more than his singing has before.

There are a few points where I kind of want it to go wild and tip into that collapse/chaos he's done before - the end of Magpie, for instance, teases me that it's going to explode and then it pulls back and finishes - and initially I was a bit gutted that he hadn't pushed it right out there, but I'm also impressed by the restraint.

Great seeing you write about music again, Scik Mouthy. I remember following your blog years ago and getting some amazing recommendations. And I'm glad the family's doing better!

“Our Love” didn't grab me much either, maybe apart from the singles, and Daphni was never really my thing, but I'm looking forward to picking up a copy of the new one today after work. I actually like his singing on his older tracks so the focus on vocals shouldn't be a problem.

Today's Pfork review saying that all of the vocals are him with AI effects, and insinuating that the reason he's not doing interviews around the release is because he doesn't want to make that a focus of how the record is heard.

Were this kind of effects really that much trickier to do before "AI"?

If I’m understanding it correctly these aren’t AI generated vocals, but AI masked vocals. So Dan is basically singing everything and then changing his voice with AI. So this isn’t radically different from say, using autotune but has more potential and will probably be a very popular tool for modifying vocals in the following years.

I don’t see anything controversial with its use but I see why most articles will use it as the main story so they can use the AI buzzword.

It was a very unbalanced piece of writing! I don't mean the prose was unbalanced, I mean the writer seemed to be all over the room.

Ethics/fears about the use of AI-aided vocal transformations aside, I simply miss Snaith’s vocals a lot here, and I think that the album suffers greatly for their absence.

I get why he wanted to experiment with a compelling new technology, and I think it would have made for a fascinating EP. But the contrast between the fragility/vulnerability of his voice and the virtuosic technicolor of his beats has always been the key axis upon which Caribou has balanced, and replacing them with a faceless female pop coo sort of tilts the overall picture into a zone I don’t love.

The record has a gimmick. It’s ok to criticize the music for being gimmicky. But this pearl clutching about an electronic artist using technology is bizarre. And wondering about the “implications” of the AI voice for the rap section is just obnoxious. To call that part rap is questionable to begin with, but also White rappers exist. It’s like if someone said “It was fine sampling Kraftwerk records, but when he sampled James Brown records it really started raising questions”

Like, the implications of the technology are clear and it's Pandora's Box, but let's save the vitriol for when someone is actually using it in a lazy and appropriative way.

The irony is that Snaith has always used sampled vocals to great effect— if he’d just released the album with no mention of AI, I doubt anyone would’ve batted eyes

for over 20 years i have favored "jacknuggeted" as my favorite caribou song but i think this is gunning for it
