Interesting. The young dancehall acts are not crossing over to American r'n'b/rap radio, and while Stelfox (at the Guardian and Pitchfork) and others may be still championing the latest release by one-drop reggae vocalist Luciano, that's apparently considered too old hat to get much attention also.
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 14:47 (seventeen years ago)
my interest in dancehall isnt consistent, so im prob in no position to judge, but do people think the new stuff is still as good as ever? i like guys like vybz kartel a lot (hes not new though i know) but a lot of what i hear on dancehall radio shows on R1 or 1xtra these days just kinda goes in one ear and out the other. seems very ephemeral. sort of like a lot of modern hip hop overall.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 15:00 (seventeen years ago)
or is it like hip hop where a lot of the best/most interesting records oddly seem to be coming from the older artists?
RTC, who keeps up on dancehall alot, and posted a fair ammount on 2007's dancehall thread, doesn't seem to come around here much this year. So maybe AMON has an idea, as I'm not that up on the latest dancehall. Also, are hiphop producers less interested in dancehall nowadays. It seems that way.
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)
i dont see that as a bad thing. dancehall producers shouldnt be looking for hip hops 'validation'. it goes in cycles anyway, but the mainstream boom of dancehall and hip hop seems to have deflated more or less together, so both genres are probably still getting used to the idea of the big pop market not being there like it was in the early 00s.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 16:24 (seventeen years ago)
i don't follow the latest stuff close enough to say one way or another, but its always been ephemeral with all the riddims being churned out and versioning different voices, going way back 30 or 40 years.
the hiphop interest seems to come and go. maybe this summer we'll get some hot lil boosie ft. busy signal joints
now let's lol @ ele gone gospel

David ‘Mavado’ Brooks who is charged with two counts of shooting with intent and illegal possession of a firearm was offered bail when he appeared in the Gun Court today to answer to the charges laid against him earlier this week.
― am0n, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)
"its always been ephemeral"
yeah of course, but before at least, it *seemed* that there were more tunes that would last the distance. now i listen to robbo ranx or goldfinger and its just way too samey and sort of amounts to 'nothing' afterwards. or maybe its just i dont like the aesthetic of a lot of modern dancehall.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 16:49 (seventeen years ago)
Dancehall's fine, I'm sure. Everytime the dancehall-crossover-boom slows down everyone gets up in arms and then it comes back and everyone goes crazy about that and etc. . .
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 16:50 (seventeen years ago)

"gun court"!
― Jordan, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)
right, mine too.
i usually don't get into stuff immediately anyway so the ephemerality isn't really greater or lesser, so much as i just don't have the hindsight yet or not enough distance from the latest shit. cuz i think you need that with genres where everything is "lol that riddim from five minutes ago is old! this one here is the latest thing! hype! hype!"

where does h2o sell tickets? i get the feeling they have a dress code but i could be wrong
― am0n, Monday, 21 April 2008 17:06 (seventeen years ago)
They do not seem to ever sell tickets---they just advertise shows on their website and once in awhile on late-night ads on PGC and KYS. So you have to wait in a long line outside and get searched and show id and then pay. I think you can get on an e-mail list for the club also (although I rarely get any e-mails from them now that I think about it). Yea, it's a no sneakers, no blue jeans dress code policy. When they used to have Friday night salsa veteran shows I would go. Sometimes if you get there early it was/is cheaper to get in, but the live music never starts until 1 a.m. or later. Which can make it tougher if you're taking public transportation and have to worry about taking the last train. As for driving, you need to get there early to find a street spot, or pay expensive garage parking. The place is basically a pain in the neck. Crossroads is not much better.
― curmudgeon, Monday, 21 April 2008 17:37 (seventeen years ago)
i don't know if i'm up for that hassle, unless its something really good. from what i remember crossroads sells tickets, has a (crappy) parking lot and no dress code

Also, "Made in Jamaica" movie doc tonight at the Lincoln Theatre in Dc and May 3rd at the Regal Cinemas Gallery Place
The film brings together a dream list of musicians, including Gregory Isaacs, who offers a majestic elegy to slain dancer Bogle, Bounty Killer, who speculates on what drives young men from poor neighborhoods to gun violence, and Lady Saw, who explains how liberating it is to outperform men when it comes to raw, sexual lyrics. Sound systems pound out deep-bass "riddims" on street corners, in yards, and on Jamaica's famous beaches, as Bunny Wailer, Beres Hammond, Third World, Toots, and Capleton chant lyrics of resistance and redemption. http://www.filmfestdc.org/filmView.cfm?passID=62

any good roots/culture riddims and songs this year? I really like the Kingdom Riddim (Collie Buddz & Chezidek on this riddim are awesome), and of course "Must Come A Road"... and I've been listening to a lot of Queen Ifrica lately ("Below The Waist," "Daddy," "Genocide"... she is amazing) what else? Everything seems to sound like Daseca and Di Genius, with all the autotune and shit...

Eek-A-Mouse Disses Sean Paul, Shaggy, Bob Marley
13 Jun 2008 | by A.K.A., Contributing Writer
When asked at last week’s Carifest CARES (Compassionate Artists Recognizing Entertainment Solutions) press conference what Carifest meant to him,Eek-A-Mouse replied: “It doesn’t mean (expletive) to me” .
He then changed the subject entirely and went off on a tirade, dissing all the“white people who control reggae, like Ace Of Base, Matisyahu, (whose name he repeatedly mispronounced and called Matissaweh), Sean Paul and Shaggy; bitterly blaming them for his inability to get signed by a major label. He even he included the late, great, reggae founder BobMarley in his racist rant, citing that he had a white father.
“They nah wan no black people to run reggae music. They waan Sean Paul and Shaggy; A true. Matissaweh jump inna di business and starts selling allthe records, and now mi cyan sell none, and mi cant sign me, so miwonder wagwann. Bloodcloth! All dem white boys get money from reggae music and me cyan get none. Toots and The Maytals, Dennis Brown getn othing and here comes Massassahoo, here comes UB40…” he repeatedh imself, getting visibly more amplified by the second, as shown in this video of what the release dubbed "spiteful speech" . Click on the link below.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8gz2-SHGlYs
Music transcends race, if Eek-A-Mouse can’t get signed or earn money, perhapsits his attitude, not his skin color, that’s holding him back, the release said.
Team Legendary Promoter, Alfonso D'Niscio Brooks told Eek-A-Mouse's management and agent that, “Unless he issues a public apology toCarifest, its affiliates and its supporters, his performing at Carifest will not be allowed and I will expect a complete refund.” Mr.Brooks further emphatically stated, “I can't condone or promote his negative behavior. Carifest C.A.R.E.S is about Love. Racism and/or prejudices will in no way be accepted. Carifest has a very diverse audience and will not alienate anyone. I mean it when I say we will represent only good vibes! Carifest is not the platform for negativity.”
Stay tuned to find out if Eek-A-Mouse recants his racist remarks or if the show will go on without him.

new buju video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UAIDux1VWRE
No he didn't and I'm not entirely sure he's completely right anyway (how to explain Bounty Killer, Sizzla, Capleton, Elephant Man, etc--he's obv right about Matisyahu.) But Eek-A-Mouse's big problem with achieving international success has more to do with coming along at a moment when America wasn't paying Jamaica much mind and he (like most deejays from that period) was unable to ride it out long enough for the next wave of interest.
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)
he also relied too heavily on one vocal gimmick, and still does apparently from that video, so he was bound to go no further than a hit or two
― am0n, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:29 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah that didn't help his longevity.
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:37 (seventeen years ago)
(how to explain Bounty Killer, Sizzla, Capleton, Elephant Man,
but they still don't compare to the name recognition of shaggy and sean paul in the u.s. but that's due much more to their willingness to do crossover material rather than their color. still its hard not to see it factor in some way, like record execs seeing lighter dudes as more marketable/safer
― am0n, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)
not to credit what he's saying though, his over-emphasis of it is purely delusional. calling matisyahu "Massassahoo" is hilarious
― am0n, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)
I think with the exception of Elephant Man (who spent way too long squandering any momentum he had from all those Lil Jon remixes) the reason those three artists aren't as successful is almost entirely because of their relative lack of desire for crossover potentional (although Bounty Killer did do that No Doubt track.) It's hard to crossover when you are that committed to being hardcore. Still Shabba had quite a few hits (at least as much as Shaggy was) and he's not exactly pale-skinned. Buju, Beenie have had a pretty good amount of success here as well. Sean Paul has been kind of freakishly successful, but I get the impression that might have at least as much to do with his being "cute" as with his being white looking (although obv those two things are not separable really.)
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 19 June 2008 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

King of the Underground Dancehall scene, Vybz Kartel has launched yet another commercial venture. Close behind the heels of his premium rum brand “Vybz Rum”, the president of the Portmore Music Empire has announced his endorsement of a condom line named “Daggering”.
The condoms will be manufactured and tested to U.S FDA standards.
The condoms are to be packaged and distributed locally marketed by a private company. The three pack condoms will be affordably priced and will be an integral part of Vybz Kartels’ upcoming Safe Sex promotional campaign.

My Honda wasn't firebombed - Vybz Kartel
25 Aug 2008 | by A.K.A., Contributing Writer
Vybz Kartel a.k.a Addi the Teacha is denying claims that his Honda Accord motor car was firebombed by thugs who allegedly came to his posh residential home in the wee hours of the morning.
"Ridiculous!" a calm-sounding Vybz Kartel told a One876Entertainment.com reporter this morning. "The Honda had an electrical problem and the fireman came and extinguished the blaze, that's all, my car was not firebombed."
Vybz Kartel has been involved in a lyrical clash with David 'Mavado' Brooks, a member of the Alliance in recent weeks, the two exchanging hardcore disses on the Martial Arts rhythm resurrected by Cordel 'Skatta' Burrell. Mavado's song, Dem a Fag, intimated that Kartel was a homosexual, while Kartel responded with equal vitriol in Wah Dat Fah? suggesting that he had sexual intercourse with Mavado's mother and reiterated rumours that Mavado's brother was an effeminate homosexual.
"At the end of the day, Jamaicans should know it's just music, no physical altercation. Mi no have nothing against David. If he does against me, I don't see it. My focus now is on positive songs like Money Fi Spend, Million by a Morning, and Life Sweet, uplifting songs for Jamaica, so don't expect me to perform those clash songs onstage, just regular thug anthems and daggering songs. Money over war," he said.

I've asked this question twice elsewhere on ILM but most people here seem to be interested in setting up polls rather than actually talking about music so maybe I'll get an answer here: is the new Mavado album any good?
― Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 08:03 (seventeen years ago)
It's good if you like lots of Mavado.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:59 (seventeen years ago)

No in fact he didn't answer my question. I do not know his previous work, have only recently heard (of) him and like the couple of tracks I have thus far heard. Hence I wanted to know whether the full album was worth investing in or not since I haven't heard enough of his work to judge whether I like him as an artist or not. That was the reason for my question.
Next time I'll try and ask other people offline who aren't afflicted by chronic Asperger's. Sorry to have bothered you.
― Marcello Carlin, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)
I wasn't trying to be snide. I would try listening to more Mavado before buying it then. He's a bit of one trick pony so over the course of a whole CD, his autotuned hardman schtick can get a little wearying for most people. But if you really like his schtick then you'll like the album, because it def. stays really true to that schtick.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:35 (seventeen years ago)
Since I use $$$s it's not worth $18 (our exchange rate) IMO, but I don't quite get UK pricing so £10 may be a deal there.
― Alex in SF, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)
I do not know his previous work

Did Pitchfork ever get someone to take over Stelfox's reggae/dancehall column?
Thu: 08-28-08The Month In: Reggae / DancehallThe Month In by Dave Stelfox Well, it's been a long run here at Pitchfork for both myself and "The Month in... Reggae/Dancehall" column. Unfortunately, though, it's my sad duty to announce that this installment marks my final contribution to the site. In early October, I'll be leaving my home for the past 12 years and heading off to sunnier shores to take a job on a newspaper in the Middle East

― craig sager (eman), Friday, 28 November 2008 01:36 (seventeen years ago)
Yes I did. At the risk of sounding cliched (or like an elementary school teacher i had ages ago) it sucks that some knuckleheads have to ruin things for everyone. Years and years ago, there was a shot fired out in the hallway of the old 930 Club when they had a reggae dancehall show, and they stopped doing dancehall events. The Crossroads has had problems for dancehall shows on and off. A dc club for teenagers on F Street (I just forgot the name) that had hiphop and go-go recently got shut down because of some young troublemakers. And go-go clubs have had trouble on and off for decades. It's a complicated political, social, educational, economic, etc. issues and merely shutting down clubs won't stop all the problems.
I always wanted to go there. Oh well.

― craig sager (eman), Saturday, 6 December 2008 03:02 (seventeen years ago)
So do DC area dancehall clubs just need to have better security and metal detectors and stuff to keep the knuckleheads (and NY Giants football players) away? I don't think the Crossroads has had trouble lately. Lots of events are going on all the time and seem to run smoothly I guess (I don't sit around reading police reports so maybe ignorance is bliss).
― curmudgeon, Saturday, 6 December 2008 15:29 (seventeen years ago)
from a b-more perspective the clubs that don't tend to have incidents will have several bouncers frisking and maybe an off-duty cop or two outside. i can think of one club in particular that has had several shootings outside it, some fatal, that never gets shut down, supposedly due to ties to city hall. it's on a block that is slowly gentrifying so i'm sure quite a few of their neighbors would like to see it go. i almost wonder if clubs go lax on security on purpose in order to draw people that, understandably so, don't feel like getting patted down every time they go out for a night. but then that leaves it open for a violent element

Jamaica police: Gangs oust 200 people from homes
By HOWARD CAMPBELL – 6 hours ago
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Heavily armed gangs wrestling for control of two communities near Jamaica's capital have forced more than 200 people from their homes, police said Wednesday.
Families packed mattresses, refrigerators and other belongings into trucks and cars as they fled this week, forming a funeral-like procession out of their neighborhoods. Local school attendance has plummeted from about 600 to 200 students, said Natalie Neita-Headley, a parliament member who represents the area.
Gang takeovers are fairly common in impoverished communities across Jamaica. In recent years, the groups have ousted residents from east Kingston as well as from rural parishes.
Police said they are looking for the leaders of the One Order and Clansman gangs, known mostly for extortion. The gangs have threatened residents and accused them of being police informers, police Supt. Assan Thompson said.
But Monsignor Richard Albert, chairman of a local crime-prevention committee, said the gang leaders have denied threatening anyone.
Albert instead blamed the takeovers on "rogue elements who want to throw people out of their homes so they can put in their own and collect rent."
The most recently targeted communities are located near Spanish Town — about 14 miles (23 kilometers) west of Kingston — where gangs have been fighting for control for nearly 10 years.
Several days ago, a separate gang burned down a tenement in Kingston and left more than 40 people homeless. Most of the victims had lived there for almost 60 years.

KINGSTON (Reuters) - The dancer and choreographer who created the popular dance used by Jamaica sprinter Usain Bolt to celebrate his victories at the Beijing Olympics was shot to death at a Kingston nightclub on Friday, police said.
David Alexander Smith, who was known in entertainment circles as "Ice," was shot in the head and chest during an argument with two men who took his keys and fled in his car, police said.
Police said they did not know the motive for the shooting.
Smith created the "Gully Creeper" that Bolt danced each time he won a race at the Olympics last August.
Bolt set world records in the 100 meters and 200 meters and was a member of the Jamaican quartet that won gold in the 4-by-100 metre relay.
Jamaica has one of the world's highest per capita murder rates. More than 1,500 people have been murdered in the Caribbean island this year.

Almaz is one of the many Ethiopian restaurants on or near U street. A dancehall night that used to be at Duke's moved to Almaz and features http://www.myspace.com/spydathedj on Thursdays. They have also had hiphop djs on some nights. It sounds good but I haven't been there yet.
18th St. Lounge is the place that's owned by the Thievery Corporation dudes. Sometimes they have a doorman and don't let groups of guys in, or they turn 'em away, other nights anybody can get in. I haven't been there in ages. Helene Cooper of the NY Times recently mentioned it in a NY Times Inaugural piece--Enter through the door next to the Mattress Discounters — there's no sign outside — take the stairs and voila! A multilevel row house, with room after room of velvet couches and fireplaces, awaits you. There's a back deck for spring and summer after-work cocktails, and the crowd is a mix of Yes We Can activists and Middle Eastern and European World Bank types. http://travel.nytimes.com/2009/01/18/travel/18hours.html?scp=1&sq=helene%20cooper%2018th%20St.%20lounge&st=cse

It's great. Their comps are almost universally excellent.
No idea on that Congos thing, but I think Simple Vinyl did the Blood & Fire reissue so I don't know anyone would bother with anything else.

Timberlee is awesome. Mavado is still tough for me to take across a whole album, but in small doses he's amazing (Cecile's album from last year OTOH is all killer, totally recommended.) Ward 21 still killing it after all these years. Best producers since prime Steely & Clevie (guess I could hear a Lenky or a Bennet argument.)

ce'cile had an album last year?! omg. never knew. must hear.
enjoyed busy signal's last year too...'unknown number' was my jam.
my dancehall reawakening is mostly courtesy of the heatwave blog, i must admit.
― lex pretend, Sunday, 15 March 2009 20:58 (sixteen years ago)
It's called Waiting (Digital version is called Worth It though, strangely)--Trina is on the new version of "Hot Like We"!
Heatwave are a lot of help, as is Ghetto Palms on the Faderblog.
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 15 March 2009 21:06 (sixteen years ago)
hmm is it this? that's on itunes too, also under the name bad gyal, as well as another album with a rejigged track listing called worth it
― lex pretend, Sunday, 15 March 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)
Worth It/Waiting have some overlap with Bad Gyal (which was originally released in Japan, I think.) Worth It is Waiting w/ two bonus tracks, I think. Bad Gyal seems to be lacking "No Disturb Sign" which is the fucking jam so I would get Worth It.
― Alex in SF, Sunday, 15 March 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)
Here is a link to that tune (courtesy of Heatwave hah!):

Police question Ninja Man
The police are to continue to question dancehall artiste Ninja Man who has been arrested in connection with a murder case.
Ninja Man, whose real name is Desmond Ballentine, turned himself in to the police yesterday afternoon in the presence of his lawyer.
On Thursday the police said they wanted to talk with Ninja Man in connection with the murder of 20 year old Ricardo ‘Ricky Trooper’ Johnson.
Johnson was killed last week Tuesday.
The police say Johnson was sweeping his yard in the company of a friend in the community of Marl Road, Kingston when a grey motorcar drove up with three men aboard.
The men got out of the car and engaged in an argument with Johnson’s friend before leaving.
The men later returned, this time opening fire as they approached.
Johnson was hit and was pronounced dead at the Kingston Public Hospital.

I did not go to any of the old-timer reggae gigs this just-concluded weekend--no Barrington Levy at Zanzibar; No Beres Hammond at Wolf Trap; and no Yellowman and Tinga Stewart and was it Leroy Sibbles at Anne Arundel Fairgrounds.
Meanwhile, since dancehall no longer crosses over onto the r'n'b/rap charts it gets no attention outside of hardcore dancehall circles.

Pitchfork seems to have scrapped their dancehall/reggae column. Erin McLeod wrote a few columns but none that I've seen recently.

It's that tree falling in the forest thing, if records get made in Jamaica and no American bloggers or chatboard people comment on them do they exist and are they any good?
― curmudgeon, Monday, 13 July 2009 15:34 (sixteen years ago)
Amon, R/T/C, Alex in San Francisco, hello, helloooooo, is anybody there....
I'm guessing btw that there are folks out there at other locations still writing about Jamaican music, but there's definately less crossover action going on

Did a quick W. City Paper blog about Tarrus Riley coming to the Crossroads outside DC Sunday night, and then came across a big NY Times article on him as he's got a new cd coming out. Anyone else beside me like his rootsy, r'n'b inflected reggae ballad and pop style? Wimpy, I know.
Rob Kenner, who once had a reggae n dancehall column in Vibe penned this NY Times piece:

Maybe the ILX mods should just add the word "onward" into the subject line: 2008-2009 onward Dancehall/reggae
There are not enough posts here to justify a 2010 only thread --unless someone who knows alot and is willing to 'talk to themselves' with posts comes onboard

I gotta listen to that Heatwave thing. So King Midas Sound versus Jamaican dancehall and reggae, any thoughts? Listening to both makes sense to me, but many seem to have just chosen King Midas.
― curmudgeon, Thursday, 7 January 2010 16:32 (sixteen years ago)
I'm struggling with the King Midas Sound album, which to my ears sounds like cast-offs from a Massive Attack album. Although, it may be that I am approaching it with an expectation that it was recasting reggae/dub/spectral dub a la Rhythm & Sound.
And I LOVE Rhythm & Sound so much that in comparison, King Midas Sound sounds too skeletal and lacks warmth. I'm presevering for a few more listens

but how he blames US R&B and rap for being all identikit chrome blobbery and not dancehall is odd. they both suffer from many of the same problems imo. i fucking hate movados emo autotunery.
