Songs that ILM hates

Message Bookmarked

This poll consists solely of songs that have had to deal with a lot of abuse on ILM. They probably aren't hated by everyone here (in fact, several of them are generally considered classics by critics and fans alike), but they are obviously more hated here than elsewhere.

The point here is not to vote for the worst though, but rather for the one you find best

A lot of great songs here, in fact, but none greater than "Country House". :)

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:16 (eighteen years ago)

Sting or Mika - by some distance

IT'S NOT LIKE YOU DIDN'T KNOW THAT
I SAID I LOVE AND I SWEAR I STILL DO
IT MUST HAVE BEEN SO BAD
BECAUSE LIVING WITH ME MUST HAVE DAMN NEAR KILLED YOU

i went oasis, coz it's loooooong.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:19 (eighteen years ago)

coldplay easy

deej, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:20 (eighteen years ago)

'Country House' without a shadow of a doubt.

Frogman Henry, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

Dreadlock Holiday is my favourite of these

blueski, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

I went for MacArthur Park. Sometimes I prefer Dumbledore's original; other times I need Donna and Giorgio's exegesis - 17 minutes on the unedited 12-inch mix.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

Though the version recorded by Jimmy Webb himself on Ten Easy Pieces may ultimately be my favourite.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:25 (eighteen years ago)

Four Tops did it too?

Tom D., Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:26 (eighteen years ago)

The point here is not to vote for the worst though, but rather for the one you find best

oh shit i meant 'country house is undoubtedly the worst. my favourite would probably be 'hey jude', mainly for the lyric.

HOW CAN I SAVE MY LITTLE BOY FROM OPPENHEIMER'S DEADLY TOY?

Matt DC, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

Fuck!!!!!!!!!! I DO NOT LIKE STING OR MIKA!!!!!!!

Tom D., Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

(xp)

Tom D., Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

suuuuuuure ya don't

blueski, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:29 (eighteen years ago)

I don't subscribe to that point of view.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

o shi i voted worst too! fuck.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

I voted "Hey Jude".

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:30 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't know ILM hated that Mika song. I think it's quite fun. I'm gonna vote for that.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, what's so awful about it?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

You've obviously never heard it 673,000 times - like the poor beleaguered inhabitants of the British Isles

Tom D., Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

FAKE TUOMAS

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:34 (eighteen years ago)

You probably heard "Macarena" 673.000 times too, but that "song" has never met the deserved universal hatred at ILM :)

Personally, I stay away from either. Mika is rather dreadful, unless we are speaking of Mr. Kojonkoski....

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:35 (eighteen years ago)

I can't see how a song being extremely popular makes it bad.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) is at least funny.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:37 (eighteen years ago)

It's the sort of song which only really makes sense when it's a number one hit.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost

No, the point he was making that a banal, whiny, annoying song becomes 673,000 times worse on repeated exposure.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:38 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty Fly (For A White Guy) is at least funny.

Okay.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:39 (eighteen years ago)

I can't see how a song being extremely popular makes it bad.

2+2=5

Tom D., Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'd put Grace Kelly midtable if ranking these. Russians punching above their weight for that UEFA Cup place.

blueski, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:40 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't Grace Kelly a positive, joyful tune, not whiny?

Tuomas, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

The lad has obviously never heard the UK 1993 Christmas number one (xxp).

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

the hell is whiter shade of pale doing in this list? all the others are shite

electricsound, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:41 (eighteen years ago)

Tom hates is, for one. And, you know, Tom's views are rather important here....

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:43 (eighteen years ago)

'Scuse me?

Tom Ewing, I assume.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

Oh! maybe it's you Tuomas!

Tom D., Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

The video for that Creed song has given me so many lulz in the past I should probly give it a vote

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

Good idea for a thread, but if any of these are worse than "Country House", i'd be amazed (Geir, you mad. But you knew that...)

now reading the list.

OK there are about five worse than CHouse. xcepting ones I don't know.

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:47 (eighteen years ago)

No you're supposed to vote for the best worst or somethign

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:48 (eighteen years ago)

Right, it was hard as not many of these I'd care to hear right now, but I went for "The Stand" the Alarm, haven't heard it in years.

I know the Alarm aren't exactly loved, but I don't recall "The Stand" ever getting hate. Oh, and "Rain in the summertime" is just needing an e-tabulous remix and it'd be a hit once again!

Mark G, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:50 (eighteen years ago)

I hate "A Whiter Shade of Pale"? Why didn't somebody tell me?

Tom Ewing.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 11:56 (eighteen years ago)

went for Hey Jude. its ok really innit?

Thomas, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure Tom E would be overjoyed to be regarded as representative of the taste of nu-ILM.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

I now realise I forgot to include "One More Night". Oh well, probably wouldn't have won anyway....

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:16 (eighteen years ago)

Ban Tom E., Tom D., Thomas, Tuomas, Tombot, and Tom Passantino.

blueski, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:20 (eighteen years ago)

How could anyone hate "The Stand" by the Alarm? That's like hating oxygen.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps that's a bit of a reach.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

A tad

Tom D., Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:41 (eighteen years ago)

a whiter shade of pale. followed by avril. how is that not a good song? sheesh.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:44 (eighteen years ago)

a whiter shade of pale. followed by avril. how is that not a good song? sheesh.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

Avril should be torn apart by badgers.

Alex in NYC, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 14:07 (eighteen years ago)

I like "Complicated" just fine, thanks. But "Whiter Shade of Pale" takes it. I'm still surprised it's up there.

Myonga Vön Bontee, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 18:49 (eighteen years ago)

I picked "Dreadlock Holiday" over the also geaat "Whiter Shade of Pale," and had no idea that anybody hated either of them til now.

xhuxk, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 18:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's STILL rock and roll to me.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

god go to hell all of you for playing along with this

gff, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Ocean Colour Scene: The Riverboat Song

^this is still played every single day on Wyvern FM.
Every single day.

Voted Avril, naturally.

DavidM, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 19:07 (eighteen years ago)

McArthur Park is the only thing there I genuinely love, so that. I don't mind Billy Joel or U2 so much either. The rest... no. (Although having said that I've no recollection of what 'Mint Car' sounds like. I'm sure it's a better single than 'The 13th' at any rate).

Gavin in Leeds, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

RONG

energy flash gordon, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

This is a pretty wretched collection of songs. Voted Nickleback, haha.

chap, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

I like Whiter Shade... Procul Harum had a scalding little tune on a recent MOJO sampler called Heavy Nuggets. Long Gone Geek is the name, good shit.

Bill Magill, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

I have Russians on 7".

jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Making it the only one of these I own and thus default winnah!

jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Flip side is "Gabriel's message".

Not good.

jim, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

Country House.

zeus, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

I like all of these:

The Beatles: Hey Jude
10cc: Dreadlock Holiday
Billy Joel: It's All Rock'n Roll To Me
Live: Selling The Drama
Oasis: All Around The World
Travis: Why Does It Always Rain On Me

"Hey Jude" and 10cc are probably the best. But somehow I'm going for "All Around The World."

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

Also, from Tom E's "Popular" blog entry on "A Whiter Shade Of Pale":

I used to hate this song. [...] I still don’t like it much [...] great Hammond, good vocals, draggy pace, blows its wad on verse one and then goes nowhere.

(It's worth reading the full thing though!)

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

whiter shade of pale is a beautiful song! for shame strawman ILM poster that may only exist in geir's head!!!!!!!!!!!

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

Of course it's beautiful. Even though their pinnacle was "In Held Twas I"

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:40 (eighteen years ago)

The Cure had a song called 'Mint Car"?

I voted for Avril, although really it's Hey Jude, but who the hell doesn't like Hey Jude?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 02:03 (eighteen years ago)

"Who the hell doesn't like [brilliant song/band/album]?" is a pretty typical reaction for me when reading ILM.

Most of the songs listed are pretty wretched, though. I voted for "Hey Jude" not just because it's the best of those - it's just a brilliant song, period.

Nathan, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't think Avril was ever hated on ILM?

"Bengali In Platforms" = indefensible though.

Sundar, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Whiter Shade of Pale. I've heard most of the songs on that list way too many times to ever care to hear them again, and by the way, thanks for getting Good Enough stuck in my head.

miryam, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

Whiter Shade is just the best song on there, imho.

that said, anyone who doesn't absolutely despise "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" should please move back to tenth-grade now.

the table is the table, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

"American Pie" is my least favorite, but I voted for a Bluroasis song just to tick off Geir.

abanana, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 04:18 (eighteen years ago)

I quite like that Dodgy track.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

i love A Whiter Shade of Pale. what are some of the arguments against it. always puts me in a good mood.

gman, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 06:15 (eighteen years ago)

Whiter Shade of Pale

Tape Store, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 06:26 (eighteen years ago)

This weekend, i prepared a set filled with Nickelback covers, but unfortunately, I left the lyrics in my now-broken car, which currently sits unlocked in a repair shop parking lot. I like the thought of some thief (or the mechanic, for that matter) stumbling across the lyrics to "How You Remind Me" and a $99 guitar.

Tape Store, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 06:32 (eighteen years ago)

nothing by lionel richie, hmm

the galena free practitioner, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

I haven't got the impression that Lionel Riche is particularly hated here. If I was to include something by a black act (well other than Ocean Colour Scene's drummer), then Lenny Kravitz would have been more obvious.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

All these songs are awful. I'm surprised to see how much I agree with the alleged ILM general "opinion". I can't make up my mind so I'm not gonna vote. The results will probably be meaningless anyway cause half the people are voting for the best track and half for the worst.

daavid, Thursday, 24 January 2008 03:21 (eighteen years ago)

I like 5 of those for real, and a bunch others as guilty pleasures. Complicated and Hey Jude are both outstanding.

billstevejim, Thursday, 24 January 2008 04:15 (eighteen years ago)

I like the thought of some thief (or the mechanic, for that matter) stumbling across the lyrics to "How You Remind Me" and a $99 guitar.

Better: this is how Nickelback actually came up with the song.

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 24 January 2008 04:19 (eighteen years ago)

"Hey Jude" has made me bawl my f**king eyes out in the past (hey, I had a step-mother), and I've flipped 180 degrees on "Whiter Shade Of Pale", but the contrarian in me is going to show some love for "Somewhere Only We Know".

mike t-diva, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand anybody who doesn't love 'MacArthur Park'.

emil.y, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:21 (eighteen years ago)

The best version I've heard of "MacArthur Park" was by Andy Williams, on his farewell UK tour last summer.

mike t-diva, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

One thing I'll always stand with Geir on is that Country House rules

A B C, Thursday, 24 January 2008 11:32 (eighteen years ago)

um.. of the ones i've heard Avril - Complicated is the best.

The Brainwasher, Thursday, 24 January 2008 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Jude, even though the 2nd part goes on too long.

kornrulez6969, Thursday, 24 January 2008 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

The point here is not to vote for the worst though, but rather for the one you find best

I missed this and inadvertently cast a vote for Creed, thinking I was voting for the most unbearable song in the world. TAKE IT BACK!!!

Finefinemusic, Thursday, 24 January 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

I had a beautiful MDM@ moment to Whiter SHade of Pale once, so I'm voting that. Tho best moment in this list is "Chill out, what you yelling for?"

The Wayward Johnny B, Thursday, 24 January 2008 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

that said, anyone who doesn't absolutely despise "Why Does It Always Rain On Me?" should please move back to tenth-grade now.

I sort of agree now that I've heard it enough times to make out the cringe-inducing lyrics (which makes about 11 times total). But I always enjoyed the melody when I stumbled across it. Still do, I guess.

also, Whiter Shade rules.

will, Thursday, 24 January 2008 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

I can't stand myself
I'm bein' held up by invisible men

Not so bad!

Doctor Casino, Thursday, 24 January 2008 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

A twelfth-grader writes.

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 24 January 2008 18:20 (eighteen years ago)

how can people hate "Whiter Shade"? It's like Percy Sledge covering a Bach fugue.

Drugs A. Money, Thursday, 24 January 2008 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

i had no idea dreadlock holiday was so hated!

winston, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 02:56 (eighteen years ago)

"Dreadlock Holiday" is sometimes seen as a bit racially dodgy.
Also the "white man does reggae, mixes it with lots of pop" thing will always cause a lot of hatred, not only on ILM.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

Well, the verses are fine. It's the chorus, which (my songwriter head on here) seem to me the bit that got written first in a jolly ho ho let's play reggae type jam session.

Mark G, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

"A Whiter Shade of Pale"

Joe, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

there are 3 fairly great songs on that list by beatles, U2 and blur

think i'll go with 'country house' because it hasn't been as overplayed as the other two

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 30 January 2008 13:36 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Thursday, 31 January 2008 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I thought "A Whiter Shade Of Pale" was going to win this.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 31 January 2008 02:55 (eighteen years ago)

me too

ok who's the fucking sad act who voted for 'russians'??

electricsound, Thursday, 31 January 2008 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

Dave Matthews Band: Baby
Hootie & The Blowfish: Drowning

What are these?

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 31 January 2008 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

Songs.

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 31 January 2008 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

ok who's the fucking sad act who voted for 'russians'??

I voted "Country House", but "Russians" is a great song. Sting didn't become not great until the mid 90s.

Geir Hongro, Thursday, 31 January 2008 09:02 (eighteen years ago)

Wait, who hates Country House?

musically, Friday, 1 February 2008 23:34 (eighteen years ago)

Damon Albarn and Graham Coxon. Not that any of them post on ILM though. :)

Geir Hongro, Friday, 1 February 2008 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

All truly abysmal stinkers, apart from 'Mint Car' and 'Good Enough', which are nice and inoffensive pop-fluff.

Had Peter Sarstedt's 'Where Do You Go to My Lovely' been on the list, it would've gotten my vote.

stareyedsquirrel, Saturday, 2 February 2008 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

I am kind of surprise "Bengali In Platforms" received one vote only.

Geir Hongro, Saturday, 2 February 2008 03:59 (eighteen years ago)

(Hmmm. Now I was the one who was thinking the wrong way - obviously getting few votes means few people like it, of course)
