i was actually reading a profile of him in the new fad3r today and this is either gonna be really great or a monumental disaster

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 23 January 2008 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

when does it come out

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 23 January 2008 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

i know we're on to 'sexuality' now, but the videos on record makers' youtube channel for 'politics' are hilarious. they mostly consist of him ranting in french wearing a fringed leather jacket, huge sunglasses, and a sombrero. he's insane. i love it.

jaime, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

It is really great, very italo synth heavy and strangely moving vulnerability. Darker and much more melancholy than 'Politics'

baaderonixx, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

I think I had this guy mixed up with someone else .... then one of his older tracks showed up on lovefingers and I was like "wow." got some catcihng up to do

dmr, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

this is either gonna be really great or a monumental disaster

Hmm, I don't think of Tellier as trying to create something that *could be* a disaster. It's already kind of a disaster right? He doesn't confound expectations because he's already told us not to have any. "Wonderafrica" contains lines like "lady love on the lam" and something about flamingoes and another song sounds like the chorus during the Haunted House ride at Disneyland.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

The pictures with Guy-Manuel are like an inverted robot version of these:

Son of a Magma member, interesting...

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 24 January 2008 01:11 (eighteen years ago)

He looks like a French Vincent Gallo, who bases his music around the theme of being perverted.

mehlt, Thursday, 24 January 2008 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

he's way uglier than gallo and seems to have a better sense of humor. tellier >>>>>>>>>>> gallo

jaime, Thursday, 24 January 2008 02:43 (eighteen years ago)

so like if someone who had the leak wanted to email me a rapidshare site where i might be able to find it i probably wouldnt get mad at them

two weeks pass...

loving this right now. it's kind of got an electro-balearic vibe that im really diggin. also, from what i can hear this record has a major cross over appeal which wasn't necessarily the case with his earlier work.

oscar, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

his best yet i think!!

max, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

I was totally into this after one track and kind of bored after six or seven. Maybe I'll give it another go.

Matt DC, Thursday, 21 February 2008 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

baaderonixx, Thursday, 21 February 2008 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

i love 'divine', kind of reminds me of hall & oates or something.

or something, Thursday, 21 February 2008 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, and the vocals are very "Good Vibrations".

Spencer Chow, Thursday, 21 February 2008 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

It really makes me think of Denim, more than anything else, in a pretty good way.

love love love kilometer

deej, Monday, 25 February 2008 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

so i like this album but does anyone else find the drums/hi hats a little flat sounding? it bothered me in the sorcerer album too, like 'kilometer' has this big, uh, expensive sounding synth-hook and then some really cheap drums that sound all CASIO

deej, Monday, 25 February 2008 05:35 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure the cheap drums are deliberate.

After playing this a few times over the weekend I now unreservedly love it. It makes me want to go out and buy a tigerskin rug and an enormous watercolour featuring naked Amazonians cavorting in front of an epic sunset on Venus.

Matt DC, Monday, 25 February 2008 10:55 (eighteen years ago)

i think i dont have a sense of humor about drums :-/

deej, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Great feature on him today in one the big French dailies. Apparently, before making music he had a) been a construction worker, b) worked in spare parts warehouse c) voluntarily signed into a mental ward

baaderonixx, Monday, 25 February 2008 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

i like that all it really takes to 'get' his image is a gis

jaime, Monday, 25 February 2008 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

As usual, everything he says has to be taken with a large grain of salt... The mental hospital thing has popped up before though, in more details. It seems he came back from a UK show to find his place empty, his girlfriend gone, and that's when he committed himself there.

crispyben, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

i think tellier's character/schtick has largely made up for the fact that some of the songs on this are kinda boring

deej, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

So I saw him at beaubourg last friday : great concert although the venue is not designed for that kind of performances (it's like an amphitheatre).
Tellier was playing the guitar (and a bit of piano) with two guys playing synth/sampler and piano. very good lightshow in the spirit of the album (a bit jean michel jarre style, especially on the intro "sexual sportswear"). he played all the songs from the album + a few from previous ones (including la ritournelle by himself on piano).
he's a very funny/sweet performer. The speeches betweens songs were as much pleasure as the songs themselves. very human which means not a perfect show but a very moving one. my favorite performance was "l'amour et la violence". a great, great version started by himself on the piano then the synths gettinh in. it was longer and more powerful than the album version.
anyway, loved the concert and might see him again in April.

AleXTC, Monday, 3 March 2008 12:45 (eighteen years ago)

Can't wait to see that...

AleXTC, Friday, 7 March 2008 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

It's hard to take seriously an official page written in such poor English, but I guess I'll just take their word.

I'm quite baffled by this: "The album is currently at number two in the French chart"

baaderonixx, Friday, 7 March 2008 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

well, there is a HUGE hype about him in France (at least in Paris). He's everybody's darling (especially the media and hipsters).

AleXTC, Friday, 7 March 2008 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

WFT?! As a long-term Eurovision fan whose loyalty was severely tested last year, I am several stages beyond excited about this...

mike t-diva, Saturday, 8 March 2008 01:25 (eighteen years ago)

I got the album from Pure Groove in the UK who included a Tellier "mixtape" CD which is fun.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

Total was about $29 which isn't much more than ordering from the US Amazon. I'm bummed there isn't a special edition with the awesome "Sexual Sportswear" video.

Spencer Chow, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

this album is great. i didn't expect something so minimal, the synths and drum machines just glisten. it's kinda like italians do it better for people who go to dinner parties. think 'elle' is my favourite at the moment, but it seems like the kind of album where every song is a potential favourite, i love records like this

r1o natsume, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

So when is this "Europe Vision" thing? As feelthy Amerikaner schweinhund I don't really have much of a grasp on this kind of thing; the official website is staggeringly unhelpful and seems to assume I already know.

Telephone thing, Sunday, 16 March 2008 04:52 (seventeen years ago)

May 24th. France directly qualified to go to the final, loads of other countries have two semi finals on May 20 & 22 first.

StanM, Sunday, 16 March 2008 08:42 (seventeen years ago)

i accidentally put "roche" at the beginning AND end of this album on my ipod and it works really well!

s1ocki, Friday, 21 March 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

you guys should youtube some other contestants and past winners of eurovision. europe is wack-y.

also, vice interview with tellier is pretty funny. excerpt:

"Do you have a girlfriend?
Yes. She is my muse. On the record there are many samples of female moaning. That was my girlfriend. I took her into the recording booth and fingered her sensually. Those moans are moans of sexual pleasure."

wowzers.

There's a reason I specifically mentioned "in English" upthread : it's turning into an issue.

http://www.esctoday.com/news/read/11096

StanM, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

The song France sent to the contest in 1990 was partly in English (ok, only the four words in the title, but still) - White And Black Blues (written by Gainsbourg, sung by Joelle Ursull).

StanM, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 17:24 (seventeen years ago)

i think this is my favorite album of the year so far. that fucking glistening sound is just wonderful. it seems to build on discovery's whole 80s aor thing really well, these song forms offer more room to play around in that area. like the over-the-top supertramp-ness of the 4th track (even down to that damn wurlitzer sound). and i've been listening to van halen a lot lately so those "jump" synths in "kilometer" really hit me (especially since it's such a killer tune anyway).

i can totally see where people are coming from re: the puniness of the beats in this and the sorcerer record, but it doesn't bother me. but i'm kind of a lame chillout dude so maybe i'm predisposed to flat-ass beats

i can't believe sexual sportswear is the single! kinda weird, no?

winston, Wednesday, 16 April 2008 01:27 (seventeen years ago)

oh wow "divine" is his eurovision song.

apparently, "Chiver is inspired by French independent film 'Steak' (released a year ago).
It's the name of a crew which everybody wants to be part of.
Tellier perfomed in and scored the film."

YES

Local Garda, Monday, 22 September 2008 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

the production by Guy-Man is good. Tellier's vocals often grate as he goes for this fragility and sexiness but just ends up irritating - is best when this is played down as on 'Divine' and 'Elle', the latter would still work sped up and Braxified.

From his early days discover a gem such as « Fantino », which was featured in Sofia Coppola's Lost In Translation or « Universe » which is the key song in Daft Punk's cult Electroma' film. from the Ritournelle' years, « Broadway » is a true diamond, such as « Benny ». His score for Narco and his acoustic live album Sessions are filled with connoisseur's choices like the Christophe cover « La Dolce Vita » which has gained cult-status. Add to this package the 4 best tracks of Tellier's acclaimed Sexuality album, and 3 unreleased & exclusive live tracks recorded in Japan early this year and you have an album that will give you thrills !

Roz, Saturday, 14 April 2012 18:13 (thirteen years ago)

i would enjoy that video a lot more if there weren't all those shots of men hitting women, i know the video doesnt like 'support' that stuff and is meant to be some sort of parody of decadence and depravity but i still hate seeing that esp in a fun music video context

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Saturday, 14 April 2012 20:57 (thirteen years ago)

Just listened to the samples of this on Amazon. My first thoughts are it sounds like he's made a prog record. A lot of the songs seem to have the same pace, Cochon Ville seems like the only upbeat song. I hope the it's better than the clips would suggest, Sexuality is probably one of my top five albums of the last five years.

Kitchen Person, Saturday, 14 April 2012 21:22 (thirteen years ago)

@s1ocki : yeah, I totally see your point but as you say I think it doesn't support that at all, obviously (including the woman with the gun in her mouth) and on the other hand, there's also a guy with something about to blow in his butt...
basically it's just "fun" !

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Saturday, 14 April 2012 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

well, I may have not expressed myself very well or else and anyway, I can totally understand if you think the video is not ok at all !

AlXTC from Paris, Saturday, 14 April 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

yeah i was sort of half-paying attention to the video, so the first time i just noticed the "fun", like the naked dancing and the bottle rocket in the butt. but then i sat down to watch it again paying closer attention and i got a little grossed out by the choking and slapping.

heated debate over derpy hooves (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Saturday, 14 April 2012 23:47 (thirteen years ago)

but the thing is the video, the song and the whole album, I guess, are about the excesses and crazy things that happen in sects with the guru, the cheesy/creepy religious outfits, the fanatic members, the sex scandals...

this is prob a stupid question but does he talk in English or French?

♆ (gr8080), Monday, 16 April 2012 22:09 (thirteen years ago)

i imagine he talks, in french.

A Little Princess btw (s1ocki), Monday, 16 April 2012 22:10 (thirteen years ago)

When I saw him he was using (extremely charmingly) broken English. He was such a bizarre and charismatic presence though that it wouldn't really have mattered. To start the show he had a body double come out on stage after lights lowered for about 30 seconds, got applause, immediately handed guitar to real Tellier.

Am once through the new LP and not quite sure what to think...seems to sag in the middle a bit, much more varied stylistically. But the tracks that stick out immediately (mostly the first 1/2) are amazing.

Deverly (Bangelo), Monday, 16 April 2012 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

this is basically for driving next to a beach at dusk, probably in a really nice car and wearing a suit (seersucker? probably a one-button coat, cut low--no tie; the shoes are the most expensive part of the outfit anyway) with your chick next to you (in a really nice dress, hair up & back) and everything's blowing in the wind

Yeah, he has a real presence live and it's far more instrument based than you might expect- he often pays for a full piano. He also picks up local players to fill out the band, and rumour has these are chosen largely by their shoes.

mmmm, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 07:29 (thirteen years ago)

seen him three times - varied from awesome to "interesting" (ie. the last time I saw him on the tail end of the Sexuality tour, when you could feel he was starting to get bored with the material)

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 07:38 (thirteen years ago)

inconceivable

TracerHandVEVO (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 17 April 2012 10:02 (thirteen years ago)

Agree with the earlier posts about La Ritournelle being the most beautiful song ever recorded, this version is quite special.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zub1-8l0bnU

Broadway is almost as good too, especially the "I feel I'm losing you" bit, which breaks my heart everytime.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lBF8dZGJMU

So the new album is good but sadly not in the same league as the last two albums. The production is amazing but by about track eight I started getting bored of him using that same drum beat for almost every song. I'm not too worried as it took me a long time to really fall for Sexuality.

Anyone know when this actually comes out in the UK? I think the April 23rd release date is just for France.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 13:40 (thirteen years ago)

so far, the little I've heard seems unremarkable/bad. but I just listened to it once... I will wait till I listen to the whole thing properly some times before I make my mind up.
for instance, I thought "cochon" was quite meh at first but now I kinda like it !

AlXTC from Paris, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 13:50 (thirteen years ago)

Cochon sounds even better on the album as it's one of the few songs that actually has a different beat. I was just expecting a lot more from this album.

Kitchen Person, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 13:53 (thirteen years ago)

its v atmospheric and groovy, even by tellier standards, itll prob reveal itself in time

lag∞n, Tuesday, 17 April 2012 13:55 (thirteen years ago)

well I might have a nice surprise then because I'm expecting something quite bad after the first few reviews I've read...
I've had the synth riff from "cochon" stuck in my head quite often lately !
