The Macallan 18 Year, Saturday, 2 February 2008 00:49 (seventeen years ago)

tremendoid, Saturday, 2 February 2008 00:52 (seventeen years ago)

love this track....I have high expectations for his upcoming album

Malcolm Money, Saturday, 2 February 2008 05:13 (seventeen years ago)

when does this actually come out?

s1ocki, Saturday, 2 February 2008 06:08 (seventeen years ago)

ok. not as good as "venus" or "both ways".

abanana, Saturday, 2 February 2008 06:25 (seventeen years ago)

This might mean that so far, the (read: my) three best tracks of 2008 thus far are all disco numbers. And a brave new world it is.

mehlt, Saturday, 2 February 2008 06:33 (seventeen years ago)

It is!

The Reverend, Saturday, 2 February 2008 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

this is not that good

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 2 February 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

booooooooo

The Reverend, Saturday, 2 February 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

i hated it, it was terrible!

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 2 February 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

"blind" and "still going" and whatnot at least have some sort of update factor to them, this just sounds like it could be keytronics ensemble or anything else on irma circa 1992

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 2 February 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

maybe it will grow on me. it took a while for the first juan maclean to grow on me.

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 2 February 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

Juan always left me colder than a witch's tit (except for GMELT and his live show, which was good enough to stand out as exemplary in my mind despite being the last act I saw before Daft Punk at Coachella), but this is just something else. I'm %10000 fine with zero update factor in light of Nancy's performance and All That Piano.

jamescobo, Saturday, 2 February 2008 18:46 (seventeen years ago)

where is everyone listening to this? myspace

s1ocki, Saturday, 2 February 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)

that was a question, not a rhetorical question-and-answer

s1ocki, Saturday, 2 February 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

it starts about 30mins in the Juan Maclean RA mix. not sure where anyone else is getting their fix. i think i saw a virb or imeem page with the song extracted.

brotherlovesdub, Saturday, 2 February 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

on his myspace

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 2 February 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

it's on his myspace and on the mix he did for resident advisor ... can't get it off RA anymore but a bunch of blogs repost those things

uh xpost

dmr, Saturday, 2 February 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

this song is just ok ... I like it but it's def. not a bomb like "Give Me Every Little Thing"

dmr, Saturday, 2 February 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

megaupload link shamelessly swiped from dfa/juanmaclean forums for Juan Maclean RA podcast

In related news, supposedly there's a new <a href="http://www.myspace.com/6fs";>Six Finger Satellite</a> record coming out on Load (Maclean not in the band). It'd be cool to have him do a remix.....

this is a fun song

deej, Sunday, 3 February 2008 02:20 (seventeen years ago)

'By The Time I Get To Venus' was so much better though

zeus, Sunday, 3 February 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

is this a siouxsie cover?

Creeztophair, Sunday, 3 February 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)

No, more like what it says on the tin.

The Reverend, Sunday, 3 February 2008 21:50 (seventeen years ago)

the more i hear it, the more i love it. i think nancy is singing on a few songs on the album. i can't wait.

brotherlovesdub, Sunday, 3 February 2008 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

so excellent

The Reverend, Sunday, 3 February 2008 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

What have you been working on recently?

I have been finishing my next album The Future Will Come. Me and James Murphy are just putting the final touches on it now. I am very excited about it, it is an entirely vocal oriented album. Sort of a disco inflected Human League sounding record featuring many duets between me and Nancy Whang, who has sung on Juan MacLean stuff here and there in the past, but is now featured full-on throughout this entire album.

gr8080, Sunday, 3 February 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

His podcast for resident advisor (happy house is in it) is pretty serious as well, worth listening to if it's yo thing........

Michael_Pemulis, Monday, 4 February 2008 03:57 (seventeen years ago)

the weird thing is that on the podcast there IS an electro cover of Siouxsie's Happy House and then the Juan Maclean song right aftr it

dmr, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:13 (seventeen years ago)

really??

cuz i heard that cover version at a club a month ago and it confused me cuz i'd heard about this supposed JM song

s1ocki, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

01. Hawkwind - 10 Seconds Of Forever
02. Still Going - On and On

06. The Juan Maclean - Give Me Every Little Thing (Putcsh 79 remix)

lol

dmr, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:27 (seventeen years ago)

that new Syclops song on there is really good too

dmr, Monday, 4 February 2008 04:28 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, DFA has just snuck up on me and really given me a swift kick to the rear in the last like, week and a half of discovering their recent catalogue.

This track is indeed, excellent, so excellent. In fact, I'm now listening to it, sped up by 24%, with old rave tracks on top of it, to hear what it would sounds like as an actually happy house song. The question now is why?

mehlt, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:42 (seventeen years ago)

tim sweeney has played this a bunch on beats in space. including running it out of the dubtribe track that it jacks the keyboards from!

haitch, Monday, 4 February 2008 05:49 (seventeen years ago)

Meh - this reminds me of everything I didn like about his first album. I think I'll only ever love GMELT and 'Dance with me'

baaderonixx, Monday, 4 February 2008 09:14 (seventeen years ago)

xpost: which dubtribe track?

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 01:21 (seventeen years ago)

nevermind, i found it. september 25th, dubtribe - do it now.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 01:24 (seventeen years ago)

do it now = one of the best house tracks ever. i do like happy house regardless.

or something, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

Also, Siouxsie fans take note of the title of the song after both Happy Houses.

Kevin John Bozelka, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 07:24 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

man the long version of this is good

t_g, Thursday, 28 February 2008 13:14 (seventeen years ago)

the dubtribe track or the Juan track?

god I would put a long version of the Juan track on repeat forever (ditto for a long version of the first song off 45:33. DFA could become an all-piano-house, all-the-time label and I would be the happiest person on earth.)

jamescobo, Thursday, 28 February 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

the juan maclean song. i guess it's just the normal version? but on those mixes i hadnt heard the whole 9min or so of it.

oh and total co-sign on the all-piano all-the-time dfa

t_g, Thursday, 28 February 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

the only thing I've seen is a nine-minute set rip - I for one am still waiting on pins and needles for a clean copy. when's the album due out again?

jamescobo, Thursday, 28 February 2008 19:34 (seventeen years ago)

i dont think this is a set-rip? http://www.zshare.net/audio/8057684a1760bc/

but am unsure, my friend just fwded it on + it's not the one that i had heard before

juan maclean myspace just says that the album is out sometime in spring/summer :(

t_g, Thursday, 28 February 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

THE FUTURE WILL COME - OCTOBER 09

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 28 February 2008 21:11 (seventeen years ago)

TOO LONG

Gukbe, Sunday, 2 March 2008 00:13 (seventeen years ago)

heard this song at 'the clurb' last night, sounded real good

deej, Sunday, 2 March 2008 00:25 (seventeen years ago)

i dont think this is a set-rip? http://www.zshare.net/audio/8057684a1760bc/

of course it's a set rip!! the pianos that fade out at the beginning are from "still going theme"!!

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 2 March 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

in fact, i do believe it's ripped from tim sweeney's august 21 2007 beats in space set

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 2 March 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

i just figured out this was a rip of "do it now", rushed to post, found out at least three people beat me to it. oh well, at least now i know why this song doesn't impress me that much.

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 2 March 2008 00:39 (seventeen years ago)

The 12" of this is in stores; I saw it at Rough Trade last week.

Savannah Smiles, Sunday, 2 March 2008 01:06 (seventeen years ago)

holy crap at that Dubtribe song. is this some long lost DFA track? those vocals and everything. i've never listened to them because the name makes me think of shitty SF hippy raves. need to do some research.

jaxon, Monday, 3 March 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

This is actually on iTunes - $9.99 for the single with 2 mixes?!?!

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 12:03 (seventeen years ago)

ya wtf??

s1ocki, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

that is extortionary pricing but does little to diminish my biblical covetousness for this song.

also what mixes?

jamescobo, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

Original Version (12:38)
Prince Language Dub (9:14)
Lee Douglas Remix (6:10)

Savannah Smiles, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 16:21 (seventeen years ago)

jesus christ, prince language? WANT.

jamescobo, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 16:25 (seventeen years ago)

GET.

s1ocki, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

some of us switched over to the Zune ecosystem around christmastime (tradeoff: we got exclusive Made In The Dark b-sides a few weeks ago).

jamescobo, Tuesday, 4 March 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)

so Turntablelab had this in stock and so I bought it and I love it and then the baby looked at me

jamescobo, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 02:10 (seventeen years ago)

okay, if i search for juan maclean, it lists the EP as being 3.99, and then when I click on it, it still says 9.99. Anybody buy it?

Gukbe, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

othermusic says they have it for three bucks:

http://digital.othermusic.com/search/full.php?FULL=234886&ALBUM=1

jamescobo, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

iTunes have changed their price to $3.99 now. Hopefully somebody is getting the message that a single > 10 minute track != $10 worth of music...

Telephone thing, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 06:42 (seventeen years ago)

just got it from other music. i can't really say it's kicking my ass (especially compared to gmelt, you can't have it both ways, by the time i get to venus etc)... but maybe i just need to hear it out first.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

does anybody know what track juan maclean plays at the 3 minute mark in this clip from his set at the PS1 Warmup last summer??

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0NXaLDIrE0

uncannydan, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

also been looking for an mp3 or tracklist of that set. PS1 posted mp3s of all the other sets that day (tim & tim, invisible conga people, etc) but strangely not juan's...

uncannydan, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 18:45 (seventeen years ago)

Nabbed this from itunes. Am I crazy or this balanced way to the left speaker?

The Reverend, Thursday, 6 March 2008 04:50 (seventeen years ago)

xpost Haha.

I wouldn't say that its any kind of epoch marker (especially when it's as indebted to classic house and disco as much as it is), it's just an infectiously catchy, wonderful, and euphoric song, (which is more or less timeless anyways amirite?)

That and what Jordan S. said.

How 'bout a round of applause? Standing ovation? You look so dumb right now, standing out by my house, trying to apologize, you're so ugly when you cry. Please--just cut it out. Don't tell me you're sorry 'cause you're not. Boy, you know you're only sorry you got caught. But you put on quite a show, really had me going. Now it's time to go. Curtains finally closing. Hi Space Monkey.

The food and supplies you would have to carry would mean a lot of fuel, but even if you could lift off on a spaceship carrying all that weight and escape earth's orbit, you won't have enough fuel to escape the sun's gravity. Unless you were on a slingshot trajectory around Jupiter. That gravity assist will give you the escape velocity to leave the solar system. With today's technology's limits of chemical propulsion, it would take you several years to get to Jupiter. Hope you brought lots of DVDs with you, and perhaps a significant other. Of course, that would mean twice the food and oxygen supplies. Bottom line is that you couldn't carry enough supplies to survive for years on end. And once you leave the solar system, within your lifetime you would not see any changes in the star background. It would seem like you're standing still in the same place for the rest of your life, onboard a little box that is the only thing standing between you and doom. Interstellar space? I don't think so. It would take you 50 years just to reach the Oort cloud surrounding our solar system. Even if you're still alive and not insane by that time, the nearest star, Proxima Centauri, in the Alpha Centauri star system, is 24 trillion miles away. Unless they perfect cryogenics by the time you take off, you'll never even get close in your lifetime, even moving at 74 miles per second.

I once went to a party in San Francisco where dubtribe played and they (or someone else - memory is hazy) made everyone on the dancefloor join hands and say "ommmmmmmm" for about 5 minutes. I think it was to heal that guy that was crushed by speaker stacks. I remember Sunshine let me touch his 303 which really excited the 17 year old me. Yeah, LOL hippies etc. but I still think they're super underrated...

The Reverend, Wednesday, 27 August 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone read this interview with Juan/John?

http://www.gbh.tv/features/juanmacleaninterview.html

I don't like the way he comes off in it at all. I have my own gripes about some electro, especially the shittier stuff that inevitably comes as it gets more popular/blogged about, and scene kids can be annoying too, but it seems to me he's mad that the music they're making is not like the music he's making. I think that the concept of authenticity in electronic music is what leads to this self-pigeonholing and microgenrefication (sorry, lame word) that causes all this stupid intolerance between different kinds of music. It's like hearing dubstep kids say why electro sucks, and house kids say why minimal sucks, and it's all boring and pointless. It's especially ridiculous to the 99% of people who think a lot of electronic music sounds mostly alike.

I love Juan MacLean music, so I was kind of disappointed to hear a music nerd kind of go off on an electro-hating tangent. It's like hearing

skygreenleopard, Thursday, 28 August 2008 23:46 (seventeen years ago)

I was backspacing and pressed "Submit" too early before I cleared that last sentence. Oh well. Still, this song kicks ass. I agree with everyone who said they really nailed the vocals well.

skygreenleopard, Thursday, 28 August 2008 23:48 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think he's hating just saying that it's kinda played-out.

are you a bangin electro artist on the rise or something?

Steve Shasta, Friday, 29 August 2008 00:08 (seventeen years ago)

nope

I agree it's kinda played out, but it reads SMARMSMARMSMARMSMARMSMARMY:

It's all rock kids.
It's a lot of mustaches and heavy metal t-shirts and fitted baseball caps.
Good God.
Yeah, that's what I was saying too.

I was just hoping that a musician who seems to take the history of the music he makes very seriously and incorporates it into his work wouldn't pontificate on scene fashion. If he just said it was played out, or sounds crappy, I could agree because he seems to know his stuff. But he speaks less about how or why it sucks and more about the "kind" of people that listen to it and how long it will last as a trend. I figured someone as good as he would take one of two stances - 1) ignore blog house like he can ignore anything else he doesn't care for and make something better, or 2) go on a "kidz these days, they're ruining my disco scene!" rant, and it seemed to lean toward the latter.

skygreenleopard, Friday, 29 August 2008 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

got the tour single. they come with 4 diff. color triangles. the song that sounds like the Pet Shop Boys is fantastic. chorus / call-response section saying "i called you from the station" + "you called me from the station" were great. overall the new songs sound great but i sort of wish this was just going to be a Nancy Wang solo album. or maybe i wish john/juan wouldn't sing on any of the tracks. he sort of fucks up the vibe with his Front 242 style vocals.

Incredible show last night in Chapel Hill. If you get the chance, absolutely go see them live. They closed with what must've been an at least 20 minute version of "Happy House." The tour cd is excellent as well. I was never completely satisfied with the first album, minus the real standouts something just didn't connect on the whole, but this show definitely has me excited for the upcoming one.

re: The Future Will Come: can the DFA crew please put that Shack Up/Losing My Edge beat away for good? this song is absolutely horrible in every way possible. the rest of the album is very enjoyable but this track (TFWC) shows a severe lack of quality control.

One Day is great, completely agree. Nancy Wang solo album please!

yeah, i know there would be a danger of having the album be too formulaic but One Day and The Station both need to be twice as long as they are to really take off like The Simple Life and Happy House

The title track is far from the best thing on the album, but I like it well enough. "Human Disaster" is totally unnecessary, but it's followed by "Happy House", which would redeem just about anything.

I dunno, I feel his sound's changed quite a bit from his first album. A lot looser now and obv. more song-oriented. In a lot of aspects, it's the vocals that push this album over the edge. xp

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:52 (sixteen years ago)

hey i liked the first album a lot too, but this one has a lot more pop appeal. and a lot more nancy whang

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:54 (sixteen years ago)

i remember when i first started posting here & actually gave a shit if ppl thought i was, like, jumping on a bandwagon & carefully felt the need to explain that i was down with three-six mafia circa 'tongue ring' or whatever. but guess what: u do not get a prize for having paid attention to ilx threads about dfa artists from a couple years back.

esp since imo that album was way spotty -- juan maclean has pretty much been a 'singles artist' kind of dude -- my first impression of this album feels sorta similar -- not sure why hes going the 'album art' route instead of just packing his records w/ 8 min. long dance tracks. half this stuff needs remixes. & imo 'one day' sounds like dudes really into herbert's scale but thought it wasnt goth enough (this is not a bad thing fwiw ... but i think it still needs a rmx)

I would totally be down with an epic remix of "One Day"

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 05:58 (sixteen years ago)

I don't really have any problem with most of the album leaning more toward synth-pop than house-qua-house, but remixes would totally be in order.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 06:00 (sixteen years ago)

indeed. i am looking forward to seeing who they get for the remixes... anyone happen to know?

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 06:06 (sixteen years ago)

i mean besides the two singles that have already been released (and also didn't really need remixes to begin with)

all-seeing eye of horus (psychgawsple), Tuesday, 10 February 2009 06:07 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah, but the Lee Douglas mix of "Happy House" and Marcus Worgull mix of "The Simple Life" are both great in their own right. I probably even prefer the latter to the original mix.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 10 February 2009 06:18 (sixteen years ago)

I'm very disappointed Emperor Machine chose to only use the male vocals on their remix of One Day. Nancy's vocals are essential and Juan's vocal is the worst part about the song. The Surkin mix is the only one worth hearing.

Agree with the proposition that "One Day" really just needs an extended mix, with a long climax of 4X4 beat plus those synth strings looping over and over and over.

@diplo DUB STEP!! GET DA FUCK UP!!! (deej), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 04:48 (sixteen years ago)

Theoretically the arrangements on this album should bore me - like, do we really need to revive Moroder, Kraftwek, Robotnik et. al. one more time.

But their maximalism, the strategic use of particular sounds (piano vamps here, faux string riffs there) and the awesomely whanged out Human League boy/girl duets make it all sound like certified best thing ever.

It feels a lot more raucous and overdriven than the H&LA album, which it obv. will get endless comparisons to.

goodbye pork pie scarf (The Reverend), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 06:43 (sixteen years ago)

Practically speaking the arrangements on this album bore me - it feels about as obvious as music can possibly get in 2009 - but I'm not sure the Juan Maclean really bring enough of themselves to the table to get past that. It felt a bit like they were chugging through the motions but without the occasional moments of inspiration I remember from tracks like Give Me Every Little Thing.

But then I heard Tonight and totally fell in love, and that alone has ensured I'll give the album a few more plays to see if it clicks.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 09:43 (sixteen years ago)

i've just listened to this a few times and to me there's something pretty great about its obviousness! I wasn't a big fan of his first record at all but this album's really clicking with me - it doesn't seem to want to be anything other than a banging disco/synthpop record and I think on that note it delivers. Plus Nancy Whang's vocals really do add something to his more rote arrangements - she's not a terrific singer but there's a charming enthusiasm about her delivery that it's not hard to get sucked in.

Agree with you on Tonight though, that was the track I really, really loved on first listen too.

Roz, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 10:21 (sixteen years ago)

the raucousness and whang's sub-pro vocals make it sound like a bunch of friends playing house music in the basement, which is what most of dfa's best records sound like i think

The Devil's Avocado (Gukbe), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 15:49 (sixteen years ago)

Man, those vocals on one day sound like they could have been lifted from an electroclash track, disappointing. (If it wasn't for the last 45 seconds, I'd say it sounds like Glass Candy, or something of the sort, which for me, again, is kind of disappointing)

I want less sing-talking and more DUN DEH DEH!

One Day reminds you of Front 242 because 'Juan' can't sing for shit and insists on putting his horrible voice on all the tracks. His voice is even worse live. Still, I love the other parts enough to ignore his contributions vocally.

juniper jazz (haitch), Wednesday, 13 May 2009 02:21 (sixteen years ago)

so good

One time we were in Bristol, in England, a few years ago, some members of the band had taken a fair amount of drugs before the show, mostly things like ecstasy and cocaine and mushrooms. I was using my older MPC at that point, and during the breakdown part in "Crush the Liberation," somehow I had managed to unknowingly raise the tempo from 120 to 180 BPM. So the song kicks back in and it's blindingly fast, and we all looked at each other and just jumped in and played furiously along.

People went crazy, they thought it was part of the show. I think Jerry threw up after, but he never missed a beat. He is like a machine, the best drummer in the world as far as I'm concerned.

that little story a few posts up about the drummer keeping up at 180 bpm is awesome. saw the juan maclean (w/ the field) a couple of weeks ago and he was absolutely incredible - they do this part where everybody speeds up really fast and then comes back down in tempo and he absolutely nailed it. which is pretty hard to do when you're playing w/ sequenced tracks imo

For a second I thought you were talking about the "One Day" vid before I figured out what you were talking about. Dude's had a rep for ridiculous hardmanning for a while.

Jordan - i read an interview with him in montreal's weekly alternative press, where he explains that he was trying to stay away from ironic lyrics in exchange for an honest, heartfelt approach at the risk of it sounding really corny. anyways i got the impression he was a really sweet guy, tired of cynicism and just wants to write some love songs.

He said basically the same thing in the Pfork 5-10-15-20 feature a couple weeks back, that he was drawn to dance music partially because of the lack of angst/cynicism/irony in the lyrics and just wanted to do something more heartfelt and without a facade.

Also, the sleeve art is great - best album sleeve I've seen in years:

Mr. Snrub, Tuesday, 30 June 2009 00:00 (sixteen years ago)

In regards to that video earlier in the thread:

I saw the YouTube video, where Jerry was fuming that you left him behind in Albuquerque – has he since stopped asking for an in-ear?

'Yeah, fuck him, he stopped asking after that video was spread around so much. To spite me, he got tattoos of midi inputs on the back of both of his arms. At the end of the day, we all have the same issues about hearing everybody on stage, and he should not be given special treatment. In-ears are for pussies. I just won't allow it on stage, no matter what he says.'

Hehehe

Also:

'Even something as shitty as this Roland U110 module I bought a couple of years ago, it's a cheap thing nobody is ever looking for. It's just a midi module with presets that you can't tweak. However, the piano sound is amazing for house-y piano stuff, and it's because of that module really that I wrote Happy House.'

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Sunday, 5 July 2009 03:37 (sixteen years ago)

Reverend, I really need to hear your reversion of "Happy House"; please can you zshare again; so so gonna play this when I next DJ.

Lamed out (inexplicably) last time I DJed and stuck Orbital "Chime" on instead of "Happy House"

All you lovers are so damn excellent!

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Sunday, 5 July 2009 03:50 (sixteen years ago)

Nothing I'm saying hasnt been said before - but this still sounds SO EXCELLENT in July 2009!!!!!

Juan/John is quite short!!! He threw on a great set - Blind (Frankie Knuckles mix), Alexander Robotnick - Problemes D'Amour and mixed "Happy House" into "NY Lipps" = people lose they minds!!

Tannenbaum Schmidt, Sunday, 5 July 2009 03:54 (sixteen years ago)

PS Not exactly sure when I'm gonna go to sleep; Happy House on loop all the way home and dug out the disco lights for home disco: HAPPY HAPPY HOUSE!!!!

03. Curses! - The Deep End (Holy Ghost! Day School Dub)
04. Michael Jackson - Get On The Floor (Holy Ghost! edit)

Holy crap they were amazing tonight. Reasons why they were awesome:

- Only playing their seven or so good songs (including Give Me Every Little Thing yay)
- Nancy Whang in full length gold cape and superhero boots
- Singer dude can play two theramins at the same time IN HARMONY. The bit between songs where he played Amazing Grace on both of them was like :0
- 25 MINUTES OF HAPPY HOUSE. About half of which was ridiculous acid wibble from "launch me into space" onwards. And then they brought the original bassline back in right near the end and people went mad.
- Finishing with Tonight <3 <3 <3

According to the Post, Fuchs was attending a benefit party in Williamsburg when he and a friend became stuck in an elevator between floors. The two opened the elevator doors and attempted to jump across the elevator shaft to the nearest floor. The friend made it; Fuchs didn't.

god, what a surreal way to go

iatee, Monday, 9 November 2009 07:16 (fifteen years ago)

the first time i ever heard any production by the dfa was the very seldom heard record a new machine for living by turing machine (featuring my (and hstencil's?) dream lineup off ex-PITCHBLENDE members: justin chearno and scott desimon with gehrard fuchs of VINELAND). [search: "flip-book oscilloscope"].

but yeah, i think it's one of the earliest dfa's productions and it is neither disco nor punk... and to think, at the time, that the rapture were just some gravity records band from san francisco and !!! were dirty smelly hippies from sacramento.

what a tragedy. from holy ghosts blog:

So there is no confusion:

Last night Jerry Fuchs, our friend and our drum hero, passed away. Jerry accidentally fell from a freight elevator in Williamsburg Brooklyn and was not able to survive the intense trauma caused by the fall. Nick and I entered the building about the time the fall occurred. We found him in the elevator shaft. We held him and talked to him and went with him to Bellevue Hospital. Heartbreakingly, the doctors were unable to resuscitate him. He was pronounced dead at 3:33 am.

My last text message exchange with Jerry went like this:

Me: Gerard, will you be coming alone tonight or do you need a +1?
Jerry: I will b coming with my friend J tonight. Let me know if that's a problem. Seriously.
Me: Not a problem!
Jerry: Dude, I know ur list is tight. Let me know if you can't swing it and i will just buy a ticket at the door.
Me: Its fine! We got it
Jerry: Thanks dawg.
minutes later....
Jerry: Thank u, thank u, thank u.

This exchange was typical of Jerry: Always apologizing unnecessarily, endlessly thanking me for no apparent reason, relentlessly polite in a world in which manners have largely been replaced by irony and sarcasm. Of course you wouldn't assume any of this from watching him play drums.... He was terrifying. A machine. A beast. Uncivilized. Rude. A savant. When he got MIDI IN and MIDI OUT tattooed on his forearms I wasn't surprised in the least. In fact, I remember thinking, "Oh, so there they are!" - - as if Jerry had finally revealed the secret to his precision and syncopation.

Jerry was the star of every band he played with and will be painfully missed by those bands and a vast network of friends, family, and of course, musicians and music lovers, worldwide. My deepest sympathies go out to his family in Georgia.

Jerry: Thank you, thank you, thank you...

Always,
Alex

Maclean mixed the entire CD live on turntables, and it features an exclusive Juan Maclean track called "Feel So Good", which has a vocal from Juan/LCD Soundsystem collaborator Nancy Whang and a drum loop from the late drummer Jerry Fuchs. The mix also includes two different remixes of the Juan anthem "Happy House", as well as house tracks that date back to 1988.
