THE MODFATHER TURNS 5O, RECORDS A
DOUBLE AND IGNORES THE HATERS. BY
CLIVE PRIOR

Paul Weller turns 50 this May, and is to mark the occasion with his
ninth solo record, and his first double-disc set, 22 Dreams. "I feel
I live and die by my last album," he says from his
Black Barn studio in Ripley, where he's putting
the finishing touches to the follow-up to
2005's As Is Now. "And this one I can definitely
live by. I feel rejuvenated by it."

It's also his most eclectic outing since his
days with The Style Council. "I wanted to do
something different. I felt I'd gone as far as I
could with my band, Ineeded to instigate a
change to become inspired. There were no
failings-out but I stripped it down to a nucleus of
just me and Steve Cradock. lt's really worked."

He had flirted with the idea of creating an album of
duets, "like the great soul andjazz singers", but also partly
inspired by successful collaborations on single with each
Graham Coxon and singer/guitarist Andy Lewis last year.

Instead, though, he opted for inviting a few guests to join in. Coxon
turns up again on a song called Black River, John McCusker adds
violin, Little Barrie play on two funky rock'n'roll blasts and
Steve White, his drummer since 1984, appears on one
track too.

"I started it last spring and it follows the passing of one
year into the next, going through the seasons," he says. "It
takes in soul, rock'n'roll, there are some folky moments,
some psych bits, a classical piece, some avant free
form. There's a tribute to Alice Coltrane and a
spoken-word piece called God - about
spirituality, not institutionalised religion. It's
been liberating and a lot of fun."

One potential fly in the ointment, though, is
the publication of Paolo Hewitt's book The
Changing Man, a vehicleforthe once Cappuccino
Kid to bad-mouth his former friend and
mentor. Weller has yet to comment. "There's too much
talk of nostalgia," he opines. "I could spend all my time
talking aboutThe Jam but it's just not my way."

"...a spoken-word piece called God - about spirituality, not institutionalised religion."

Can't wait!

Bodrick III, Saturday, 9 February 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

Hewitt finally threw him over? THAT took him long enough.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 9 February 2008 16:20 (seventeen years ago)

And Steve White is only on one track. Wonder if they've fallen out after all this time.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 9 February 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

im intrigued by this. i loved 'wild wood', bits of 'stanley road' were pretty good too.

Michael B, Thursday, 8 May 2008 00:31 (seventeen years ago)

tribute to alice coltrane? MUST. HEAR.

Turangalila, Thursday, 8 May 2008 06:55 (seventeen years ago)

You know, good! I haven't heard one note of this, but it's about time he took some chances!

Oh, and that Paolo book: It was always just a matter of time.. (still, I want one, how's FOPP pricing it?)

Mark G, Thursday, 8 May 2008 07:23 (seventeen years ago)

"She was mad her, eh? I really respect musicians who. y'know, follow their own path. It's very inspiring."

Niles Caulder, Thursday, 8 May 2008 07:52 (seventeen years ago)

He's on the cover of Mojo this month I think.

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 9 May 2008 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

I'm interested in the concept of Weller working with "each Graham Coxon."

Dingbod Kesterson, Friday, 9 May 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago)

"I would play guitar with all these Graham Coxons"

Mark G, Friday, 9 May 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

you both would listen too :)

Herman G. Neuname, Friday, 9 May 2008 16:05 (seventeen years ago)

So weller has apparently been playing Eton Rifles on his current tour.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 18 May 2008 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

two weeks pass...

So the album is out tomorrow and it's been getting fairly good reviews for "weller finally taking risks again". I've heard a couple of the songs which were ok, infact i liked a couple, which is not something I'd ever expect myself to say. Some of the songs were more like wild wood/1st solo album. Stanley Road it's not.
Robert Wyatt plays on the tribute to Alice Coltrane.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:29 (seventeen years ago)

I don't know all his solo albums by any means, but most of what I heard bored me. I like Weller when he's soulful or jazzy or funky like Style Council. I don't want rock and roll from him at all. I have been getting into his first solo album lately for that reason. I wonder if I might like the new one? I'm glad to hear he's taking risks.

Bimble, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:33 (seventeen years ago)

I haven't heard them all either, but my mates a huge fan, and he says its taking risks for a weller album. I think the album is a mixed bag of styles but there's definitely some jazzy and funky/soulful here in amongst the few rockers and ballads.
It's not the bluesy influenced rock he was making in the late 90s.

Apparently weller has been listening to jazz and even some krautrock according to some article he read.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:51 (seventeen years ago)

He's been a long-time collaborator with Robert Wyatt, amongst others, so I think he's probably always listened to that stuff.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:53 (seventeen years ago)

Would you listen to paul weller now,Jim?

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 19:59 (seventeen years ago)

I still like the Style Council, "Uh Huh Oh Yeah" was a hell of a promising first single - a promise subsequently reneged on in lots of ways - and I'd like to hear the Free Jazz stuff so I can see myself at least checking this out, yeah.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:01 (seventeen years ago)

You should check your emails more often then...

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

It's kind of cute a guy of his age rocking the pretentious song-titles.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:04 (seventeen years ago)

Next step he discovers Van Der Graaf Generator?

I still can't get my head around Weller listening to Krautrock. As Victor Meldrew would say , I don't believe it!

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:07 (seventeen years ago)

You know he's on some of Peter Gabriel's early solo albums, right?

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:08 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

It's a short step from hanging with Gabriel and Wyatt to knowing yr Krautrock I figure.

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think Weller is gonna get another cover on The Wire though hehe. He's not taking that much risk. Some of the tracks are poppy, some are quite weird for him and some are soulful or folky. Then theres the dreaded weller ballads. The more upbeat poppy songs are alright though along with the instrumentals.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)

I definitely think it's later TSC and 1st Weller Solo album fans that are going to be the ones who enjoy this album most.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:19 (seventeen years ago)

This is the only thread on ILM at the moment where the Noodle Vague/Louis J double act isnt in action.

WE'RE BRINGING THOUGHTFUL BACK

Noodle Vague, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

'Eno Collaboration' for Wella is surely overdue.

Has he had one already? Apologies for lack of Weller knowledge.

A couple I know and love are obsessed with the guy - they even based an LA holiday round one of his recent gigs.
I find it disturbing.
They were telling me about the Whitey fall out but I drifted off . I wouldn't know who Whitey was if it wasn;t for their fandom.

Read some intriguing reviews of his new one though. Curious.

Fer Ark, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

It's worth a listen. Can't say that about most of his albums since Wild Wood bar Heliocentric, Which had some strings arranged by Robert Kirby (Nick Drake)

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

My mate had a bootleg from Paul Weller Movement's 1st tour. There was a cracking funky version of Kosmos(?) I wish he would make some stuff like that.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)

I for one love the debut - bought on the rush I got from the "Uh Huh Oh Yeh" single (hey, maybe the "yeh" is a nod to Damo Suzuki! ;-). Haven't listened to it in years though and haven't bothered with anything after Stanley Road, which felt very rigid to me, but reading the above I'm inclined to check the newie out...

willem, Sunday, 1 June 2008 21:20 (seventeen years ago)

I wish Weller had made this album after Stanley Road tbh. I wonder how the post stanley road fans will take this new one. There's plenty of poppy rock songs and ballads like on all his albums, but they feel stronger than anything since and the more weirder stuff really is good. It makes you wonder why he didn't take more risks earlier. And he's on a major label so it's not like he's on a small indie and can make whatever the hell he likes, yet , that's exactly what he has done. And It's all the better for it.
I just wish he cut back on the ballads!

The 1st song on the album sounds a lot like Fairport Convention. It's a good start.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 21:33 (seventeen years ago)

world's west? WTF? worst, obviously.

It's east of west, mate.

Bimble, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

Also this may sound weird but for some reason it gives me great satisfaction to be buying a new Paul Weller album in 2008. Makes me feel...still current, not too old...or maybe it does make me feel old, but in a good way. Heheh.

I'm getting mighty sick and bloody tired of waiting for the new Coldplay album, though.

Wait a minute holy shit - Robert Kirby of Nick Drake fame did strings for Paul Weller??? OH my god. Wow.

Also this:

'Eno Collaboration' for Wella is surely overdue.

Fuck yeah, mate. Fuck yeah.

Also what's this about a cracking live funky version of Kosmos?

See I knew if I got started on this thread I'd only feel overwhelmed. I'm going to drink some PG Tips tea now and chill. There is no tea in the entire US of A like PG Tips. No fucking way.

Bimble, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

Wait a minute holy shit - Robert Kirby of Nick Drake fame did strings for Paul Weller??? OH my god. Wow.

Aye, on half of the Heliocentric album.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

Also what's this about a cracking live funky version of Kosmos?

It was on a Radio 1 live broadcast. I think Max Beasley was in his band then haha. (Yes, THAT Max Beasley).
The whole gig was really good. He should've made an album as funky and EXCITING as that. It was full of energy. You should hunt around on blogs or P2P for it. You would love it.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

I had a look on a few blogs but couldn't see it. I'm sure it was linked on a paul weller thread once before on here.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

Gosh. Sigh. I wish the email function of ILX worked better sometimes.

I'm afraid I don't know Max Beasley at all. It's so nice to be online at the same time as some Brits on ILM. I mean wow, I live for that. I will look for that song/gig?

Give me a song to start with, Herman. I'm a bit confused, now. Help.

Email me at newdawnfades______61@_____yahoo dot com

without the spaces or underlines, got it?

Just one song to help me.

Ok emailed you.
I'll need to try get that weller gig off my mate. He's the one who is a fan.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

Found it on a blog. Dunno if its ok to post it even though its a live bootleg. But if anyone wants it say here.
Emailing it to bimble now. I'll email you too J.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

Theres a FANTASTIC version of Precious on it IIRC

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

and TSC tunes as well

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

Damn, this version isnt as good as the one i had. I'll get it off my mate. Its much better quality than this.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 1 June 2008 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

I'm sorry that I'm a bit too drunk to deal with all this right now.

I will remember this, though and get back to you tomorrow or whatever. Thanks, Herman.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 2 June 2008 00:07 (seventeen years ago)

I will check my email.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 2 June 2008 00:10 (seventeen years ago)

Live version of Precious sounds so...appetizing. I salivate at the thought.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 2 June 2008 00:11 (seventeen years ago)

It's awesome, but the version of the bootleg my mate has is the actual live radio broadcast and its brilliant quality. That live gig i found isnt as good quality. Dunno if its like a 10th gen copy or what.
Have a listen to precious anyway and see how great it is.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 2 June 2008 00:14 (seventeen years ago)

Wellermania, thanx Herman. Shit. Thanks a lot.

I'm listening to the first album until I can get to hear the new album. Which will be in the next couple of hours. Wow.

This makes me so happy. I like his soulful funky jazz shit, man. That just fucking kills me.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 2 June 2008 00:41 (seventeen years ago)

I LIKE ME SOME FUNKY JAZZ SHIT OKAY?

"Above The Clouds" in my ears...have I entered heaven?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 2 June 2008 00:42 (seventeen years ago)

Jesus fucking christ, he should try reggae sometime. That would be the deal. Oh god.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 2 June 2008 00:43 (seventeen years ago)

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 2 June 2008 05:48 (seventeen years ago)

Holy shit, I really like this damn album. Wow. I'm at track 12, now.

"Invisible" was really something...I love just solo piano and his soulful voice and stuff...wonderful.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 2 June 2008 06:13 (seventeen years ago)

I think bimble likes it

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 2 June 2008 07:52 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah for real and then there's this one instrumental thing full of old synthesizers. Weird shit. I love it.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Monday, 2 June 2008 08:25 (seventeen years ago)

I remember reading somewhere that Weller tried to get into Led Zep but couldnt.

Seriously, though, exactly how drunk would they have needed to be?

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:48 (seventeen years ago)

presumably the into should have read 'into'.

I have had the same problem. Oh, OK, I never actually tried to get 'into' LZp..

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:50 (seventeen years ago)

Mark failed the audition as he took along a blow up shark, which they didn't find amusing.

"One is never alone with a Paul Weller album" - true or false?

t**t, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:01 (seventeen years ago)

No, I think you'll find One is on a U2 album.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

True!

xpost

Bimble, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, but you'll find one also in alone.

(x-X-post)

t**t, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

(And "alone" is not quite, like, wot one is with a Paul Weller album, for even if a Paul Weller album is, like, the one and only album one has, and even if that one Paul Weller album one has isn't even playing... oh-ok, I own up: I never 've appreciated much the rather (one-pony) talent that Paul-Weller-solo, like sounds to me)

t**t, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

In the same way that you can find "He Is One" in The Prisoner.

Unfortunately you are incorrect, since the new Paul Weller album is a double :)

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

Ha! "And then there were three..."!

t**t, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:20 (seventeen years ago)

(But it doesn't sound anything like the 6-legged Genesis machine, now does it??)

t**t, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

Sounds a bit like the second Peter Gabriel album in places, though.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:23 (seventeen years ago)

is it a double cd?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:56 (seventeen years ago)

Limited edition 2CD plus booklet innit.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:03 (seventeen years ago)

or a plain straightforward 1CD, which equates to a double LP (which it is, also)

Mark G, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

I understand there's a hot new triple CD set shortly forthcoming from the Mick Talbot Combo.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:07 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah that's what I thought. So any thoughts on the album yet?
x-post

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:08 (seventeen years ago)

So far it's like side two of Sound Affects as the Style Council might have done it.

Dingbod Kesterson, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:10 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm, my mate will love it then.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 2 June 2008 18:40 (seventeen years ago)

I might, too. back laters.

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 06:53 (seventeen years ago)

It even got a good review in the NME haha

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 10:44 (seventeen years ago)

Three tracks in...

Damn great so far!

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

Bet you never thought you would say that about a new Paul Weller album.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 14:28 (seventeen years ago)

It's impressive, yes.

I recall the last issued Style Council album, the 'experimental' one, and not being able to actually sit and listen to it.

BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE A COPY!! lol..

no, when I did, it just didn't hold my att: until one day I had a CD copy from the box set, and still I felt as I did at the time, that he badly needed to reconnect with his Small Faces roots.

Now he's mined that seam to say the least, I did feel he needed to make the sort of album that he himself might actually buy.

So far, this is that album.

OK, thats after three tracks, but hey.

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

(CD copy = able to play it in the car)

(Nearly typed cat there.)

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 15:18 (seventeen years ago)

Most recent paul weller albums made you wanna kick the cat?
Did you ever hear Heliocentric? That mined the whole Nick Drake thing.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 15:27 (seventeen years ago)

Except it didn't.

Dingbod Kesterson, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 15:28 (seventeen years ago)

well it didn't sell either, so it got that bit right.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Blimey, eight years ago!

Mark G, Tuesday, 3 June 2008 16:12 (seventeen years ago)

yeah but it got like 3 weeks in the top 40 and was never seen again according to my mate.

Herman G. Neuname, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 08:35 (seventeen years ago)

It was in the chart for seven weeks, six of those in the Top 40.

So bimble, still loving it?

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 7 June 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah...I took it for a walk with me on the iPod this week. I kinda figured out though that if you're a Style Council fan you should probably skip the first three or four tracks. I only say this cause a SC fanboy friend of mine said he heard a few tracks and didn't dig it.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 June 2008 14:49 (seventeen years ago)

2nd track seemed a bit council like to me.

Herman G. Neuname, Saturday, 7 June 2008 14:50 (seventeen years ago)

I think Weller shows a lot of passion on this record, like he's just really dead serious about what he's doing. It's really cool.

xpost

Well you see...no you're right. You're absolutely right about track 2. See...all the tracks were in the wrong order the way I had them. But now I've bought it all on iTunes so things are switched around.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 June 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

Suffice to say there are some non-Style Council-y things on this, though.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 June 2008 14:54 (seventeen years ago)

Hey maybe you and I are talking about different tracks anyway. Sigh.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 June 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

Any Style Council fan should love "Empty Ring", though. I mean come on. That thing gives me chills.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 June 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

Im not a style council fan though :)

Im not a style council fan though :)

Oh I know that, dude! I was just speaking in general terms.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 June 2008 16:39 (seventeen years ago)

Are there any reviews of this album I should see yet? I think it would be fun to try to do a lengthy review of it myself, which is something I don't normally do.

Bimble, Saturday, 7 June 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

Mojo, Q, Uncut had reviews (all positive i think) and NME gave it 7/10, but you dont get large reviews in NME anymore.

Paul Weller's Top 5 Albums

1 Odessey and Oracle (The Zombies)
2 Village Green Preservation Society (Kinks)
3 Revolver (The Beatles)
4 The Velvet Underground & Nico - Yellow vinyl (Velvet Underground)
5 Future Shock (Curtis Mayfield)

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 8 June 2008 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

That's pretty cool. I think I'm going to play that Curtis Mayfield song now. Makes me wonder what Paul would sound like with falsetto - he's never done that has he?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 02:09 (seventeen years ago)

I think he has, yeah, but which one escapes me right now.

Oh, bits of "Long hot summer" for sure.

Mark G, Sunday, 8 June 2008 09:57 (seventeen years ago)

Well shit! You're right! That's one of my fave SC songs, too but I never really thought about that side of it.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 15:23 (seventeen years ago)

The Jam covered Move On Up

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 8 June 2008 15:25 (seventeen years ago)

I know! Heheh! There's a Style Council live version though...Is that what you're talking about? I remember Alex in NYC claimed it was the Jam before and I said "you're wrong"...

I've found it really hard to get "Have You Made Up Your Mind?" out of my head.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

Also - "All I Wanna Do (Is Be With You)" is without a doubt THE most boring track on this. You could miss it and be just fine.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 17:46 (seventeen years ago)

"They say everything has a place and time/this ain't one of those times"

Man, I love that lyric. I don't know why.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 17:54 (seventeen years ago)

BUT EMPTY RING PEOPLE COME ON!!!!!! What else do you want out of Weller than that? My god.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

The Jam - Move On Up

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 8 June 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

and it's on Extras

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 8 June 2008 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

Well..but...hahahah! It's nice to be proven wrong for once! :)

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Did he HAVE to wear an Oxford button down shirt, though? Did he?

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

Also, little known fact: Paul Weller & Curtis Mayfield are/were both Geminis. Another little known fact is that Tim Burgess, lead singer for the Charlatans is also a Gemini and god knows he tried to copy Curtis' falsetto on the Wonderland album, and did a fine job. I can't do that kind of singing. I really can't. It takes luck and skill to do falsetto well.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 8 June 2008 18:21 (seventeen years ago)

I assumed you would've known it was on Extras

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 8 June 2008 20:30 (seventeen years ago)

It was also on a freebie flixidisc with Melody Maker, catalog no of "Paolo 1"...

(won't be using that catno sequence anymore!)

Mark G, Monday, 9 June 2008 08:52 (seventeen years ago)

And the album went in at No1 in the uk charts.

Herman G. Neuname, Tuesday, 10 June 2008 01:10 (seventeen years ago)

Fucking Hell! That's bloody fantastic! I'm surprised how many times I've played this thing, even though it does have some tracks that I tend to skip after hearing half of them.

I bet you didnt check

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 July 2008 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

He deserves props for his bravery although he is never likely to release anything remotely as good as what was on "All Mod Cons" or "Sound Affects" again.

Geir Hongro, Sunday, 20 July 2008 17:45 (seventeen years ago)

I thought you would like the style council and the 1st couple of solo albums geir.

Herman G. Neuname, Sunday, 20 July 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

I guess he's not saying they are not, just that he won't again.

However, he is wrong: This new album is as good as that.

Now going off to 'check my emails' hem hem...(thx)

Mark G, Monday, 21 July 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

did it work?

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 21 July 2008 10:57 (seventeen years ago)

As for Style Council I only liked a couple of early singles. Paul Weller solo is good in theory, but the songs don't work out. Too much of the blues is rarely a good thing.

Geir Hongro, Monday, 21 July 2008 18:58 (seventeen years ago)

He's not done a bluesy album in about 8 years.

Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 21 July 2008 19:10 (seventeen years ago)

I got the new link you sent me, thanks Herm. I'll try it when I get home.

Bimble, Monday, 21 July 2008 20:16 (seventeen years ago)

one year passes...

So new album has Kevin Shields, Bev Bevan and BRUCE FOXTON on it. It's a bit more refined, definitely more psychedelic than 22 dreams. Songs are quite short but a few of them still have the experimental flourishes (like the jazzy piano parts) that the last album had. I'm not sure if the rip i heard is a bit crap or he's gone for a lo-fi production (my guess is I have a transcode) but my weller diehard mate likes the album a lot. He's pre-ordered the deluxe 2cd version with the remixes.

Mark G, I'm interested in what you think about it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 13 March 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

Mark clearly still doesnt check his emails..

Weller fans are saying this album is more experimental than he's done before, no acoustic songs and a couple of his best songs since the jam.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 20 March 2010 15:17 (fifteen years ago)

Hey Ned, Kevin Shields is on this.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 20 March 2010 15:44 (fifteen years ago)

Here is the track

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 20 March 2010 15:48 (fifteen years ago)

I'm honestly still wondering how the hell Weller even knew MBV existed. "You mean there are bands that formed after 1978?"

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 20 March 2010 15:59 (fifteen years ago)

Well, the style council's influences were mostly from the 80s when those albums were made. (one of many reasons they were mostly crap). So I don't think he was always stuck in the 70s. I think the reason his 90s work was so 70s influenced was because in the 70s and 80s he point blank refused to listen to that stuff through his blinkered rock is dead proclamation. So in the 90s he finally went beyond his small faces/traffic/Who listening and discovered the 70s stuff he ignored. maybe now he's bored of that and has discovered other stuff.

maybe weller likes the primal scream stuff shields did?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 20 March 2010 16:16 (fifteen years ago)

So has he confirmed where exactly in London the plum vending machine was yet?

Jamie_ATP, Saturday, 20 March 2010 16:19 (fifteen years ago)

You want to book it for the next ATP?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Saturday, 20 March 2010 19:54 (fifteen years ago)

Definitely. I think he'll want cold curry and flat wine on the rider, not sure if we can handle that.

Jamie_ATP, Saturday, 20 March 2010 20:16 (fifteen years ago)

It's a tall order

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Sunday, 21 March 2010 00:19 (fifteen years ago)

five years pass...

New album Saturns Pattern streaming:

http://www.theguardian.com/music/musicblog/2015/may/13/paul-weller-saturns-pattern-exclusive-album-stream

I'm only a couple of tracks in but so far I'm enjoying what I'm hearing, I'm beginning to enjoy the direction Weller has gone in since 22 Dreams... it seems like he's succesfully, finally moved completely on from his Wild Wood/Stanley Road-era sound, which perhaps he'd taken as far as he could.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 15 May 2015 01:36 (ten years ago)

He seems to be in better form vocally on this record than on his past couple of records, too. 'I'm Where I Should Be' and 'Phoenix' (which is playing now) standing out for me at the moment, looking forward to hearing what the closing 8 minute epic is like.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 15 May 2015 01:48 (ten years ago)

I dunno, after all these years, I always like the "new Paul Weller Album" but I can't say I ever play it more than once..

Mark G, Friday, 15 May 2015 11:43 (ten years ago)

^^ that's exactly how I feel. I gave up around Illumination. None of the records were outright bad, or even fundamentally lacking; they were just barely a notch above average.

He's coming to town soon, though (playing at an abandoned strip mall), and I haven't seen him since 1997. I'll probably end up going.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 15 May 2015 13:16 (ten years ago)

Oh, from 22 Dreams on they've all been great, it's just .. I guess I don't need any more Paul Weller albums.

Am I off the bus? I can only think I've been running with one foot on the open platform since after the "Paul Weller" solo album.

Mark G, Friday, 15 May 2015 13:31 (ten years ago)

Illumination and As Is Now were probably the last gasp of the "Weller solo sound" that began with Wild Wood. Since then, he seems to have gone back to his late period Style Council ethos of trying to stretch himself, especially over the last couple of albums.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 15 May 2015 13:42 (ten years ago)

I never liked his "solo sound" and when I heard "Wake Up The Nation" and "Sonik Kicks" I was shocked and thrilled that he'd moved on to an almost Bowie vibe with this incredible energy that had been missing for so long. I'm looking forward to hearing the new one!

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 15 May 2015 13:48 (ten years ago)

I loved Wild Wood and Stanley Road, but found Heavy Soul a bit of a slog (and the show I saw that year was unexpectedly dominated by aimless soloing).

Listening to the new song, wow, I'm really digging it, and pleasantly surprised that he's not still stuck in "how about I shout over some open chords? Again?"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 15 May 2015 14:03 (ten years ago)

God, the interminable soloing was easily one of the worst thing about '90s Weller. If I remember, he used to launch into versions of 'Foot Of The Mountain' that lasted about 15 minutes, most of that time taken up by aimless widdling.

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 15 May 2015 14:28 (ten years ago)

You’re being too simplistic and you’re insulting my poor heart (Turrican), Friday, 15 May 2015 14:28 (ten years ago)

most of that time taken up by aimless widdling.

Yeah, I was completely baffled by it. I'd never seen him live before, and had no idea that he did that sort of thing at all. I remember many in the audience were exchanging looks like, "Huh? What's he doing? Why is the guy from the Jam playing these long-ass solos?"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Friday, 15 May 2015 14:39 (ten years ago)

I think it was around that time that someone put the word "Claptonesque" into a Weller review (can't remember what it was for) and he got seriously huffy about it!
