So we're fuck-all of the way through 2008; what records are worth attention?

MGMT? Vampire Weekend? Goldfrapp? Elbow? Ricardo Villalobos? Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds? British Sea Power? Adele? Cat Power? Duffy? What's rocking your world from 2008?

Scik Mouthy, Saturday, 23 February 2008 08:07 (eighteen years ago)

Vampire Weekend keeps holding up, despite expectations to the contrary. *shrug*

Scary Mansion's 'Every Joke is Half the Truth' is a better Cat Power record than Cat Power's own record. The Envelopes' second album 'Here Comes the Wind' continues to be rewarding. The Dø's 'A Mouthful' runs hot and cold, but the hot parts are worth hearing. She & Him's 'Volume One' (the M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel collaboration) is warm and fuzzy, perfect if you're in the mood. The Kills' 'Midnight Boom' is sort of a shift for them, but a welcome shift.

Looking forward to hearing Duffy, Santogold and some other things I can't think of right now.

I don't get why other people seem to love Hercules & Love Affair (ugh, Antony!) or that Baby Dee record (ugh, FAKE Antony!).

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 February 2008 08:36 (eighteen years ago)

that scary mansion shit is wack doo

kl0pper, Saturday, 23 February 2008 08:58 (eighteen years ago)

r0ng

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 February 2008 08:59 (eighteen years ago)

all indie shit over here so far (in no order): los campesinos, vampire weekend, high places, hot chip, el guincho also the-dream (dec 07) and gucci mane (<-listen to this, also dec 07)

J0rdan S., Saturday, 23 February 2008 09:09 (eighteen years ago)

also definitely bon iver which is i guess is either 07 or 08

J0rdan S., Saturday, 23 February 2008 09:10 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, maybe it's indie guilt, but I was kind of bummed when making my short list.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 February 2008 09:23 (eighteen years ago)

i've only listened to like 3 albums and they're all indie (counting hercules and love affair i suppose. i like it.). i enjoyed the vampire weekend ep but that was last year i think. haven't heard the album.

tremendoid, Saturday, 23 February 2008 09:30 (eighteen years ago)

heard a bunch of mixes this year though, though honestly haven't heard that many classics. tim sweeney is keeping it up, juan mcleans RA was surprisingly good. He's blown me away live before though, respect.

tremendoid, Saturday, 23 February 2008 09:33 (eighteen years ago)

i still can't get over lee burridge's balance(last year). i think there is about 1/4 that i still have to get through cause i keep having to do other stuff. always surprising. listening to tylero's mix right now, up to his usual excellent standards.

tremendoid, Saturday, 23 February 2008 09:36 (eighteen years ago)

Atlas Sound's debut is v. good.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 23 February 2008 09:56 (eighteen years ago)

Come to think of it, the new discs by Times New Viking and The Ravenottes are v. good, too.

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 23 February 2008 09:58 (eighteen years ago)

Hercules & Love Affair, Nick Cave, Black Mountain, Charlottefield, Dimension X, Diskjokke, Earth, The Mae Shi, Xiu Xiu and The Death of Her Money have made albums I'd recommend to people at will.

There's some other stuff like Kelley Polar, James Ruskin, Lights, Ocrilim and Clinic that needs to be played a bit more but is at least good IMO

DJ Mencap, Saturday, 23 February 2008 10:04 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about TNV! And Kelley Polar!

The new Fred Falke ep is rather nice as well.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 February 2008 10:05 (eighteen years ago)

what i've heard of the kelly polar is as bland as usual.

tremendoid, Saturday, 23 February 2008 10:09 (eighteen years ago)

It's good at 3am when nobody else is up except for you.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 23 February 2008 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

DJ Mencap- tell me more about that Charlottefield record. I got a single of their's years ago, but was unaware they are even still together.

Speaking of Resident Advisor, the Optimo podcast was good as well.

Neil S, Saturday, 23 February 2008 11:31 (eighteen years ago)

Well their old stuff was great but really on a Drive Like Jehu / Fugazi tip, but there's a lot more going on with this album. There's sort of folky bits and postpunk bits - I think they said they listen(ed) to a lot of This Heat IIRC? Assuming they made a bunch more records, I could see them being like Hood, except more of a punk rock band.

DJ Mencap, Saturday, 23 February 2008 11:44 (eighteen years ago)

No offense to any of you here but if all the music you listen to is in the same category (indie pop, with some indie rock on the side) then no wonder everyone always decides in November that "this has been the worst year for music ever."

Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 23 February 2008 13:10 (eighteen years ago)

haha, despite being notorious for liking indiepop, based on everything mentioned here, d5 totally otm

electricsound, Saturday, 23 February 2008 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

(despite ME etc etc)

electricsound, Saturday, 23 February 2008 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

my point was more that i havent listened to anything yet. i enjoy lots of indie pop but it doesn't represent that much of my listening.

tremendoid, Saturday, 23 February 2008 13:13 (eighteen years ago)

i've already heard a modest bunch of singles this year i think are great, but from an album point of view, whatever that's even worth these days, there's fuck-all on the ground. the raveonettes, maybe the i was a cub scout (or was that last year?)..

electricsound, Saturday, 23 February 2008 13:14 (eighteen years ago)

if the singles released thus far are any indication, the 2nd young knives album will be very good indeed.

electricsound, Saturday, 23 February 2008 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

So far this year the jazz scene is shit-hot with lots of bizarre awesome stuff that is actually kind of pop-friendly (see the jazz thread), I have heard some great r&b and amazing metal (see those threads), and a couple of things that are in no category.

Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 23 February 2008 13:21 (eighteen years ago)

Also I really enjoyed the Mountain Goats album, turns out that John D. is a pretty good songwriter after all.

Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 23 February 2008 13:22 (eighteen years ago)

Had you not liked his earlier work, D5? Or had just not heard his stuff yet?

Kind of a weird year for me so far listening-wise, actually -- nothing so far has impelled me to a series of repeat listens, which is always my litmus test for whether or not I'm really enjoying something. Then again at this time last year I only had one album like that, Jesu's Conquerer, so I'm not fretting or anything; also my attention's been more divided among many different non-musical things than it has been in a long while.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

Are pixeltan releasing their album this year?

I know, right?, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

I really like the Vampire Weekend, it did the miraculous job of dislodging Blackout from my mp3 players constant rotation. I really feel like I might have worn that part of the drive out.

I know, right?, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

HAS ANYONE HERE HEARD A MOUTHFUL BY THE DO?

Scik Mouthy, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

Also, All Is Yes by The Blessing is a wicked album, on the jazz front.

Scik Mouthy, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

For fuXXors like me who don't like proper jazz. Or don't know about proper jazz. That is.

Scik Mouthy, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

DJ Mencap- thanks, that sounds good, will check it out.

Neil S, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

I think I would like the Raveonettes album, I've only ever enjoyed Whip It On by them though, the first proper album was such a letdown. I think I'm just very sick of a particular sound which is pretty constant in indie rock, particularly British indie rock. I don't know if it's a production thing, but I just hear it and think "Oh, indie". Apart from it I think I would like a lot of indie a lot more, if it weren't going so out of it's way to sound so, y'know, indie. The Sons and Daughters album was a case in point. I downloaded it based on a lot of "60's girl groups with edge" reviews. But 60's girl groups (well, the Ronnettes, Shangri-La's, the Chiffons anyway) have way more edge and imagination, and this more "serious" rehash sounds (to me) like a band that the girls might have formed for an episode of "Byker Grove"

I know, right?, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

That said I can like a lot of indie ish signifiers, and a lot of the time indie-goes-[insert musical genre here] bands can be really helpful as an entry way into a genre of music as it makes a slightly more familiar version of it that seems to become more and more irrelevant as you listen to more music from that genre. If that makes any sense.

I know, right?, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Vampire Weekend got you into Afropop, you mean?

Scik Mouthy, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

!

No, but I can see me going that way, it works all the time, I think my interests in techno, noise, krautrock, folk etc, all stemmed from some indie band that Pitchfork or someone ranted about, and I usually end up listening to that original band way least. I think I like Vampire Weekend because they remind me of Graceland and Clang of the Yankee Reaper, both of which I love.

I know, right?, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

Know any afropop I might like by any chance?

I know, right?, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

^^^This is good.

Also receiving thumbs up from me: Los Campesinos, eMC, Corb Lund and the Hurtin' Albertans, Glass Candy.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 23 February 2008 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

I've picked up the following in 2008: Atlas Sound, Cat Power, Hot Chip, Mountain Goats, Xiu Xiu -- and I enjoy all of them to various degrees, some more than others obviously, but nothing *incredible* has come down the pipeline in 2008, yet. I'd most recommend Mountain Goats and Atlas Sound albums, both are excellent; Hot Chip is spotty in places, still pretty good; Cat Power is sorta disposable; Xiu Xiu I haven't played enough yet to figure out.

The best album I've heard (not out yet, officially) is the Gutter Twins' release, Saturnalia, coming out in a week or two, I think. If you check out the Gutter Twins thread, there's a link to the whole album, streaming online. Really, really solid album.

Otherwise, I'm most looking forward to Portishead; based on their past work (duh) and everything I've heard about the new release, especially from those who've heard it and *LOVE* it, I'm thinking this could be the best thing to come out in the first half of 2008.

stephen, Saturday, 23 February 2008 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Destroyer - trouble in dreams - almost perfect.
Vampire weekend - very good.
Mgmt - 1st half - classic, 2nd half - dud.
Chauchat - upon thousands - almost perfect.
High places - i've only start listening to it yesterday, but looks promising.

btw,i can't stand the gutter twins the gutter twins .

Zeno, Saturday, 23 February 2008 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, the Cat Power is very disappointing, but it has made me listen to the original Metal Heart a lot which is a good thing.

I know, right?, Saturday, 23 February 2008 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

btw,i can't stand the gutter twins the gutter twins .

s'okay, i think your list sucks too ;-)

stephen, Saturday, 23 February 2008 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Seriously though, Gutter Twins album is *excellent*; stream here:

Zeno, Saturday, 23 February 2008 15:38 (eighteen years ago)

Goslings - Occasion

Aaron Martin - River Water

Maninkari - Le Diable avec ses Chevaux...usually I avoid anything described as "cinematic" but this is beautiful kitchen sink ethno-psyche, somehow holds up over its nearly 2 hrs.

Box - Studio 1...hitting all those spots I wanted from the last Supersilent...like a wankier Supersilent, if Deathprod left the room and they decided to have "fun"

Hadrian VIII, Saturday, 23 February 2008 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

Ned -- I had never actually heard any other Mountain Goats albums before.

oh and je suis animal is probably great but who can find it?

keythkeyth, Saturday, 23 February 2008 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

I'm liking the Gutter Twins - Saturnalia quite a bit. Bought tix to see them in March. Still like Vampire Weekend and Black Mountain a lot. Am absorbing these, all have good moments:

Apes - Ghost Games
Big Sleep - Sleep Forever
Helio Sequence - Keep Your Eyes Ahead
Bob Mould - District Line
Protest The Hero - Fortress
Die! Die! Die! - Promises Promises
Xiu Xiu - Women As Lovers
Nada Surf - Lucky
Hot Chip - Made in the Dark
Clark - Turning Dragon
These New Puritans - Beat Pyramid

Fastnbulbous, Saturday, 23 February 2008 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

El Guincho seconded. There is an awesome new Nicole Mitchell/Black Earth Ensemble album called Black Unstoppable but I dunno if it's actually from '08.

sleeve, Saturday, 23 February 2008 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

D5, I like jazz, but it's hard for me to find reliable recommendations for new jazz discs (even on ILX's Rolling Jazz thread). What are the best new jazz discs you've heard this year?

Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 23 February 2008 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

Hercules & Love Affair, Black Mountain, Sian Alice Group, Silver Mt. Zion, Lee Scratch Perry's Chicken Scratch, and the Crystal Antlers EP have been the best I've heard so far.

Atlas Sound is pretty but kinda shallow (reminds me of Matthew Dear), These New Puritans is OK if you want to hear someone new ripping off the Fall, Clinic is OK and I like it more than their previous album (it's got a messy sound to it that I'm digging).

And fuck, I'm sick of Destroyer.

I eat cannibals, Saturday, 23 February 2008 17:27 (eighteen years ago)

Someone asked once on another thread if there were "new release" lists online for various global/non-English albums. Not sure if anyone is doing that gatekeeper function, which would be difficult considering the number of small and large label efforts in countless genres around the world.

curmudgeon, Saturday, 23 February 2008 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

so far for 2008 :

Radio Scarecrow - The Black Dog (gorgeous from start to finish, a wonderfully layered rich album.)
The Invisible Line - Temposhark
The Heliocentrics - Out There
Clark - Turning Dragon

mark e, Saturday, 23 February 2008 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh, I didn't know Clark had a new album out this year. Has it been released yet? I really enjoyed his last one.

daniel esq start here, also n.b. the next entry

"If That Arm Heals, It Ought To Be Broken Again" 2008 Jazz D Minor Bags Thread

Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 23 February 2008 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

I'll second the Raveonettes and Gutter Twins and add Drive-By Truckers' Brighter Than Creation's Dark and Sam Amidon' All Is Well. I'm hoping the Erykah Badu will turn out good.

deusner, Saturday, 23 February 2008 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

The Hot Chip is pretty good. Avoiding Vampire Weekend like the plauge til the furor dies down, though I plan to pick it up this summer. Really liking Genghis Tron's new record Board Up the House, started a thread on it.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 23 February 2008 21:44 (eighteen years ago)

And fuck, I'm sick of Destroyer.

I wondered when this was going to happen.

fukasaku tollbooth, Saturday, 23 February 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Also, that Shelby Lynne album is nice. I don't think I'm going out on a limb to say it's the best covers record by a female singer-songwriter so far this year.

deusner, Saturday, 23 February 2008 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

dance album of the year so far: prosumer & murat tepali - serenity

r1o natsume, Saturday, 23 February 2008 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

OK, Nicole Mitchell album not from this year, but check this out for April!!!:

NEW HAVEN, CT -- Firehouse 12 Records will kick off its 2008 release schedule on April 29th with Xenogenesis Suite: A Tribute to Octavia Butler (FH12-04-01-006), the new studio recording of Chicago-based flutist/composer Nicole Mitchell's extended composition of the same name.

earinfections, Saturday, 23 February 2008 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

Dimension 5ive, can you list some of those jazz albums you're talking about for lazy people like me?

Patrick South, Saturday, 23 February 2008 23:54 (eighteen years ago)

I almost bought it...but I didn't.

So far I would list my favoritest things I've heard like this:

1. Cuong Vu, Vu-Tet
2. Steven Bernstein, Diaspora Suite (Miles-ish space funk, but Jewisher)
3. Louie Bellson and Clark Terry, Louie and Clark Expedition 2 (big-band corny stuff but really good and kinda forward-looking -- Duke Ellington once said Bellson was the world's greatest musician and he was married to Pearl Bailey so that's good enough for me, jack)
4. Matana Roberts, The Chicago Project (only had it for a couple of days, moving up quickly)
5. Cowboys From Hell, Monster Rodeo (metal-jazz from Switzerland, covers of the "Halloween" theme and straight-up beat-jacks from "Eye of the Tiger", so amazing)
6. Jason Kao Hwang/Edge, Stories Before Within (Third Stream weirdness, kinda good while shoveling at midnight)
7. The Wrong Object, Stories From the Shed (Zappa Tribute Band goes jazz-legit LOL)
8. François Ingold Trio, Fat Free (v.nice)
9. Keith Marks, Foreign Funk (jazz flautist gets down with "Axel F"...but actually better than that sounds)
10. Joe Locke Quartet, Sticks and Strings (I'm a sucker for vibes)

okay my copy of Maceo Parker's Roots and Grooves just arrived and it is SHIT HOT Y'ALL. He's playing with the Cologne big band WDR; one disc of Ray Charles covers, one disc of good old Maceo funk stuff including an 18 minute "Pass the Peas." Dude can still play the holy hell out of that saxophone, it's like he hasn't aged a day. WOW BLAM ZING.

V/A Messthetics #104 & #105
Valet - Naked Acid
Belong - Colorless Record EP
Citified - The Meeting After the Meeting
Lee "Scratch" Perry - Chicken Scratch: Deluxe Edition

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 24 February 2008 00:03 (eighteen years ago)

i just checked out charlottefield, and on first listen i like it very, very much. is the album available in the states? brighton seems like an interesting town...

all i have heard from 2008 specifically is bits and pieces of the new nick cave, the new xiu xiu and hot chip. first two are fantastic, as expected. hot chip is kind of boring but maybe it'll grow on me.

Emily Bjurnhjam, Sunday, 24 February 2008 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

Citified - The Meeting After the Meeting

Wow, you're the only other person in internetland who seems to even know who they are! I'm glad they've started lengthening their songs a little. I just wish there were more than seven on the new cd.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 24 February 2008 01:03 (eighteen years ago)

I'll vouch for Decrepit Birth, Eluveitie, Furious Seasons, Gamma Ray, Ida, Joe Jackson, Magnetic Fields, Bob Mould, Mountain Goats, Zapruder Point. And reissues from Burning Witch and Xasthur. And an EPs worth of new songs added to Cradle of Filth's Thornography, and my copy of this Mexico 70 album says 2008 though I think it's really 2005 or 2006.

And my three favorite 2007 releases that didn't make it to me until 2008 are by Hundred Reasons, Kent and Puressence.

glenn mcdonald, Sunday, 24 February 2008 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

Puressence are still around?!

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 24 February 2008 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

electricsound, Sunday, 24 February 2008 06:13 (eighteen years ago)

Hmmm ... Apparently I am the only one that likes Why?'s Alpecia. I would recommend the bookends "Good Friday" and "Simeon's Dilemma." I've heard about 20 albums from 2008 and this is the only one to cause me to repeatedly listen to it.

ButterGut, Sunday, 24 February 2008 06:16 (eighteen years ago)

albums i think are great so far:

Ladyhawk - Shots
Clark - Turning Dragon
oh, and that mountain goats person

british sea power, vampire weekend, bob mould, eMC, why? have also been getting some playtime

ciderpress, Sunday, 24 February 2008 06:17 (eighteen years ago)

I think I've only been blown away by 2 albums of this year so far.

Xiu Xiu - Woman As Lovers
Boris - Smile

Bus Driver Stu, Sunday, 24 February 2008 06:19 (eighteen years ago)

No love for Beach House's "Devotion"? Seriously? It's my favorite album of the year so far.

mr. falcon, Sunday, 24 February 2008 06:28 (eighteen years ago)

oh i forgot about the constantines album that's always a good one

ciderpress, Sunday, 24 February 2008 06:31 (eighteen years ago)

Black Mountain is my favorite so far. The Drive By Truckers is good but about 5 songs too long.
Looking forward to Nick Cave, Gutter Twins, Boris among others.

steampig67, Sunday, 24 February 2008 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

All right, D5, I hope your Top 10 list above isn't in rank-order (or I hope all the selections on it are top-shelf outstanding), since No. 10 --The Joe Locke Quartet -- is the only one I found on eMusic.

I'll seek out some of the other titles elsewhere. I'm looking forward to trying some new jazz, so thanks for the recommendations.

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 February 2008 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

it should be pretty easy to find information about The Wrong Object, especially if you check out certain websites.

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 24 February 2008 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

really sad that no one has said Bruno Pronsato - Why Can't We Be Like Us cuz I think it's great.

The Macallan 18 Year, Sunday, 24 February 2008 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

very tentative top 10 so far, incl. late '07 releases that nobody I know heard last year (i.e., excluding Rihanna and Ryan Shaw, both of which I like but I figure I was just really late getting to):

1. Dolly Parton – Backwoods Barbie (Dolly)
2. Ross Johnson – Make It Stop! The Most Of Ross Johnson (Goner)
3. Frozen Bears – Hey, That’s a Good Looking Sportcoat! (myspace.com/frozenbears EP ’07)
4. James McMurtry – Just Us Kids (Lighting Rod)
5. Mechanical Bull – A Million Yesterdays (Woodstock Musicworks ‘07)
6. The Tonic Rays – The Tonic Rays (thetonicrays.com ’07)
7. Final Solutions – Songs By Solutions (Goner ’07)
8. Amanda Shaw – Pretty Runs Out (Rounder)
9. Sioux City Pete & The Beggars (Steel Cage)
10. Trent Willmon – Broken In (Compadre)

Next few official actual non-CD-R 2008 releases would probably be Alestorm, HorrorPops, Hayes Carll, Drive-By Truckers, Chris Cagle, Vampire Weekend, Left Lane Cruiser, Ayreon, Night Wounds, Chuck Wicks, Earth, and Kathleen Edwards, more or less in that order. Lazy Magnet seems interesting so far too.

Times New Viking and Mahjongg sounded good to me at first, but hold my interest less every time I play them, strangely enough. Haven't figured out why yet.

xhuxk, Sunday, 24 February 2008 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

(Sioux City Pete & the Beggars' album is called Necro Blues, btw.)

xhuxk, Sunday, 24 February 2008 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

For me there are three albums from this year that spring to mind as particular highlights so far:

Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull
Atlas Sounds - Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel
MGMT - Oracular Spectacular

krakow, Sunday, 24 February 2008 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

I would also add Raheem DeVaughn (shut up r&b haters, it's weird and good), Taint, Weinland, Devian, Raveonettes, the Mars Volta, Luciano, Akoya Afrobeat, Gilberto Gil, and yes probably Ayreon because we haven't had enough double-CD metal operas about environmental breakdown and the vapidity of modern culture.

Dimension 5ive, Sunday, 24 February 2008 20:11 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, Puressence are still around, and I think the new album is as good as anything they've done, and maybe better. Think somewhere between Muse and the Delays...

glenn mcdonald, Sunday, 24 February 2008 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

I'm always amazed by the lists you come up with, Xhuxk.

Dan S, Sunday, 24 February 2008 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

stephen, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:11 (eighteen years ago)

je suis animal 'self taught magic from a book', top indiepop record of the year so far. ambition is such an odd thing for an indiepop band to have. the days ep is also excellent.

keythkeyth, Sunday, 24 February 2008 23:57 (eighteen years ago)

I like your blog, D5. BTW, the disc I discovered there that has captured most of my attention is Marco Benevento's Invisible Baby. But is it jazz? Sounds more rock to me.

Anyway, I likely wouldn't have ever heard of it otherwise. So thanks.

...it's a LIFESTYLE.

(*cue the Reverend driving off in a sweet ride, cackling...*)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 25 February 2008 03:06 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah. What is it, then? It certainly looks like a group blog in its layout, and the posts look like blog-type entries.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 25 February 2008 03:07 (eighteen years ago)

It's looks like a blog, it smells like a blog, it quacks like a blog, but..... IT'S NOT A BLOG!!!

You'll have to ask D5 about that. He seems quite insistent about its unbloggedry.

The Reverend, Monday, 25 February 2008 03:12 (eighteen years ago)

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 25 February 2008 04:01 (eighteen years ago)

thanks daniel, i appreciate it

i dont really want it to be a blog because that implies 'when we have time for it' rather than a regular sort of thing...but we dont really have time for it so whatever

No problemo. Thanks for alerting me to the Benevento disc. It's a nice find (and on eMusic, too!).

Foals album sounds good off one listen.

Scik Mouthy, Monday, 25 February 2008 11:13 (eighteen years ago)

Since it came out late in 2007, and since I didn't hear the whole thing until this year, I will once again mention Ñejo & Dalmata's debut album Broke & Famous. This is a new and collected songs CD, since some of these tracks have been kicking around for a little while. With help from producer Danny Fornaris, they have their own distinctive sound. Reggaeton, yes, but the sounds swirling around are a bit different, and the way they hit the rhythm sometimes gives it a different feeling. Plus, really only about half the songs are dembow. I'm hoping The Reverend will eventually describe this stuff adequately, so I don't have to keep trying. There's a merengue (okay, merengueton), a cumbia, a weird dancey rocky song ("Mi Dia de Suerte"), a song with Chyno Nyno, some hip-hop, a funny ska/rock version of one of the other songs, a really bad salsa track, etc.

Sioux City Pete and the Beggars -- give them sex and money
I had my sights on blunt/dumb with that thread title and shot it right in the foot, no wonder no one bit. But yes, Necro Blues is 2006 actually, and quite lovely.

anyone heard the new El Perro Del Mar LP? if it's got a couple of tracks like 'Dog' and 'I Can't Talk About It' on it i'll be happy

the new one hasn't worked its magic on me yet.
but then again, i've not been in the mood for her style at all.
in fact, apart from the new Black Dog album, i have had a skinny 1st quarter.

i wanted the MGMT to be the great album of 2008, but its fucked beyond belief (not dave fridmanns fault - but grel calbi according to my checks), so i'm still waiting.

mark e, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

i cant pass beyond track 5 in the MGMT.
the thing is, the future also doesnt look so promising

Zeno, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

Additions to my list up there: Be Your Own Pet, Torche, Boris

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 1 April 2008 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

so far: foals, bob mould, mountain goats, boris (is that out yet? er ...), 5ive ... that's not bad so far, is it?

i think i'd probably like the vampire weekend album but i just. cannot. be. arsed.

eagerly, eagerly awaiting new M83 and notwist.

So far this year, in order: Vampire Weekend, Stephen Malkmus & the Jicks, Destroyer.

o. nate, Thursday, 3 April 2008 15:06 (seventeen years ago)

I am LOVING LOVING LOVING the new Mystery Jets and Cut Copy albums, which is a little odd since I wasn't particularly crazy about either of their debuts. Portishead is quite nice too, although I'm a little hesitant about going balls-out crazy over it when it's not even the final version. And that Dodos album is a butt-ton of fun.

srsly I'm loving this year so far and there's still an absolute ton of stuff to come.

jamescobo, Thursday, 3 April 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

That new Snoop Dogg album is banging! Its got this crazy 80s sound that sounds very cool right now.

I have also really been feeling DJ A-Trak's Oh No You Didn't: Live in Vancouver Mix CD. Did you know he is Kanye's tour DJ? He really knows diverse music.

Rob Threezy, Thursday, 3 April 2008 16:45 (seventeen years ago)

top 9 for me (can't think of a 10th one...), alphabetically:

Atlas Sound
Autechre
Boris

Malkmus + Jicks
Mountain Goats
Portishead
Raveonettes
Spiritualized

Rob, I'm pretty sure most here anyone who knows of A-Trak is aware of both his background and his tastes. and what is hazing you for stating things that are obvious and getting excited about someone he considers passe. You'll probably get more hazing from him and others. Don't worry about it. Welcome to ILX.

3) The Magnetic Fields - Distortion
4) The Ravonettes - Lust Lust Lust (I'm as surprised as you are)

7) Beach House - Devotion (again, quite surprised)
8) Autistic Daughters - Uneasy Flowers

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Friday, 11 April 2008 01:31 (seventeen years ago)

Diary of a 40 yr old still getting kicks from old favorites:

The Fall - Imperial Wax Solvent
Nick Cave - Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!
Robert Forster - The Evangelist
Jay Clarkson - Over The Mountain
Jason Ringenberg - Best Tracks And Side Tracks
Minisnap - Bounce Around (they're The Bats minus lead singer Robert Scott)
They Might Be Giants - Here Come The 123s (fun for kids & adults!)

And a bit from younger bands:
British Sea Power - Do You Like Rock Music?
Die! Die! Die! - Promises, Promises

Good but not great:
Magnetic Fields - Distortion
Billy Bragg - Mr. Love & Justice
Ruby Suns - Sea Lion
Robyn Hitchcock - Shadowcat
Sons & Daughters - This Gift

Mr. Odd, Friday, 11 April 2008 01:34 (seventeen years ago)

18th Dye - "Amorine Queen" another good one for the old folk.

I'm not having the same experience wrt 2008 vs 2007. I dig the Ruby Suns album and I like the Vampire Weekend album a lot, but aside from those two albums nothing is bumping my favorites of 07 off any hypothetical lists.

pgwp, Friday, 11 April 2008 07:28 (seventeen years ago)

I don't see anything bumping Portishead out of #1 for me, but I kind of hope something great enough comes along out of nowhere and does. That, whatever it will be, is something I can't wait to hear.

sleeve, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 03:35 (seventeen years ago)

also, The Fall's Imperial Wax Solvent is my favorite of the year so far.

sleeve, Tuesday, 15 April 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

This new Henry Fiol album, De Cachete, which you can download (in a good quality copy) from his own website, is quite good. This isn't, by a long stretch, my favorite sub-style of salsa, yet I've been listening to it over and over again. (Granted, that's partly due to the general dearth of decent new salsa.) Anyway, it's very much a roots-oriented sound, heavy on acoustic guitar, but Fiol puts his own stamp on it.

_Rockist__Scientist_, Friday, 18 April 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)

four weeks pass...

This thread needs more recent posts. I like:
Cloudland Canyon, Sic Alps, Lau Nau, Torche, Kayo Dot.
The Earth album has really been growing on me too!

jonathan - stl, Saturday, 17 May 2008 05:22 (seventeen years ago)

The Golden Hour by Firewater is, to my addled mind, completely astounding.

Alex in NYC, Saturday, 17 May 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

I love Vinicius Cantuária's Cymbals, on Koch. Minimalist like João and spacious like I like it.

Reissues: two great Memphis exhumations. Thank You Friends: The Ardent Records Story and Memphis '70, with some cool stuff by the Minits, David Porter and Bowlegs Miller.

whisperineddhurt, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:55 (seventeen years ago)

Long Blondes and Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan making a pitch for being favourites at the moment. Awaiting Spiritualized next Monday to consume it properly.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 09:59 (seventeen years ago)

Mlle Caro and Franck Garcia - Pain Disappears is a gorgeous record I haven't seen mentioned anywhere else on ILX. Initial template in old-fashioned 2003/04 bedtime microhouse but with chiming guitars and boy/girl vocals over the top. Probably the prettiest record I've heard this year.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 10:24 (seventeen years ago)

Intriguing.

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 10:26 (seventeen years ago)

I specifically mentioned this because I think you'd like it, btw.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 10:28 (seventeen years ago)

It is pretty good, but towards the middle (and through the end) it all gets samey.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 10:31 (seventeen years ago)

Any chance of winging a couple of tracks to me via gmail as a sample?

Scik Mouthy, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 10:45 (seventeen years ago)

So I sat down and worked out my favourite songs of 2008, for now:

The Veronicas - Untouched
Crazi Cousinz - Bongo Jam
Aeroplane ft. Kathy Diamond - Whispers
Ricardo Villalobos - Enfants (Chant)
Shy Child - Cause and Effect
Invisible Conga People - Cable Dazed
Gotye - Heart's A Mess (Supermayer Remix)
Hercules & Love Affair - Blind (Club Mix)
Seany B - Stomper
Peverelist - Infinity Is Now
Low Motion Disco - Love Love Love (Aeroplane Remix)
Rihanna - Don't Stop The Music
Kelly Rowland - Work (Freemasons Edit)
Digital Mystikz - Shake Out Your Demons
Patti Bligh - Brother (2562 Remix)

Erykah Badu - New Amerykah Part One etc.
Hercules and Love Affair
Portishead - Third
Booka Shade - The Sun and the Neon Light
Bruno Pronsato - Why Can't We Be Like Us
Jennifer Cardini - Feeling Strange

Also feeling:

Autechre - Quaristice
Gnarls Barkley - The Odd Couple
The Roots - Rising Down
The Kills - Midnight Boom

And other things that are already more than adequately recommended/discussed by ILM.

kenan, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:03 (seventeen years ago)

Oh! Almost forgot - Justus Köhncke, Safe and Sound. Niiice.

kenan, Tuesday, 20 May 2008 16:16 (seventeen years ago)

the Animal Collective ep is so very good

poortheatre, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 12:52 (seventeen years ago)

Pyramids self-titled on HydraHead is rather good.

aldo, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 13:01 (seventeen years ago)

Can't see the new Mudhoney or Melvins albums mentioned so far, so them.

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 13:08 (seventeen years ago)

2nd on the Pyramids album. It totally rules.

Snowballing, Wednesday, 28 May 2008 18:57 (seventeen years ago)

soda fountain rag 'it's rag time!', would be goods meets pipas meets florian? she's terrific.

keythkeyth, Thursday, 29 May 2008 05:06 (seventeen years ago)

Haha. I see Hegelson is pimping Vampire Hands again. It's really good—a bit quieter than what I usually like, and I wanted more PIL big drums, but it's held up through several listens.

I eat cannibals, Friday, 30 May 2008 00:28 (seventeen years ago)

I have been trying hard with Kayo Dot and have just about got it. Torche is v good also.

aldo, Friday, 30 May 2008 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

I thought that Kayo Dot was pretty disappointing, seemed lack some of the intensity that I liked in the earlier albums. It was just a little too composed for my tastes, I was hoping for a little looser attack.

I'm still enjoying the Jamie Lidell album much, much more than I ever expected to.

jon /via/ chi 2.0, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)

I had never heard Kayo Dot before this album, so it really hit me pretty hard. I should probably check out some of that older stuff then.

jonathan - stl, Friday, 30 May 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

maybe it's bc i'm $+0|\|3D but this Atlas Sound album r u l e s

poortheatre, Friday, 30 May 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

I'm getting the Kayo Dot, hopefully. Since leaving ILX I got hold of their first two albums and was completely blown away by both. "The Manifold Curiosity" and "___on limpid form" in particular are absolutely masterful creations. I gather Mr. Driver decided to sack everyone in the band who wasn't his girlfriend though so can't really imagine how the new one turned out.

Just got offed, Friday, 30 May 2008 23:55 (seventeen years ago)

wye oak 'if children' album isn't anything terribly different but it's quite lovely and the perfect antidote for people who used to like cat power

electricsound, Saturday, 31 May 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)

Add Debut Album by Terminus to my list. It's like Broadcast and/or Ladytron, with an added (and none-too-subtle) sci-fi movie component.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 31 May 2008 05:24 (seventeen years ago)

God this thread is annoying to search for.

I usually go through your Amazon lists at the end of the year to pick up anything I might've missed. Got Electrelane & Caribou that way, so cheers Nick.
