Who's the best rap producer ever?

I don't think we've had a poll on this yet... I tried to make this a comprehensive list of well-known producers, so hopefully no big name is left off. Note that this is about American rap only, because I'm not that knowledgeable with rap from other countries. Concerning rapper-producers, I've only included those who've done notable production work outside their own albums (like Kanye West and Eminem), which is why folks like Organized Konfusion or Outkast are left out.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:04 (eighteen years ago)

I mean, seriously, all this Dilla-stanning is the hip-hop version of "Bradley Norwood was the greatest poet of his generation"

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Nowell. Whatever.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

Are you really pissed that you can't vote for Mike Dean over, like, Marley and Premier or do you just want to point out that you are familiar with the Odd Squad album?

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Whre the hell is Kurtis Mantronik?

zumzumzum, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

this is really just too tough, I'm tempted to just vote for the oldest guy on the list, or the one with the longest career/biggest discog (and I'm not really a Dr. Dre fan at all), wouldn't even think about voting for anyone who peaked later than 2000 like Toomp.

Alex in Baltimore, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

i almost wanna vote for Cold 187um cuz i think it's awesome he's on the list and Above the Law is def. underrated.

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

Donuts is totally boring wtf people

I think I listened to it once and then ditched it

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Erick Sermon, just cuz he's excelled in a few different style and different eras from the early EPMD stuff to like "Crossover" and Redman thick funk stuff is a pretty big swing. also i've been listening to the first couple EPMD a lot lately and i'm starting to think they are my 2 fav hip hop records ever

M@tt He1ges0n, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

although if premier does worse than expected cuz everyone wants to pick a "sleeper" i'm gonna feel bad : (

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

"Man, remember in the three years before J Dilla died when absolutely nobody gave a shit about him? Good times.

-- Dom Passantino"

no, i dont remember that at all. in fact, i remember people flipping over his beats on a regular basis. i remember my shop selling out his instrumentals on Bling 47 time and time again, as well as any 12" he produced by Phat Kat, Frank N Dank, Spacek, etc. maybe your people were sleeping, but that doesnt mean everyone else was too.

"Donuts is totally boring wtf people

I think I listened to it once and then ditched it

-- Shakey Mo Collier"

hahahaha. i voted dilla. it's not really even close, either. i love some RZA, but i hate alot of his other stuff. same with primo and dre, really. but most of dilla's shit is dope, the only thing i'm really not down with is Common's "Electric Circus" album.

pipecock, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:44 (eighteen years ago)

gff, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

xp keep that shit to dance music threads dude

deej, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, Spacek was selling Creed figures in the early 00s. Good times.

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:47 (eighteen years ago)

i'd bet premier for the win. he shold prob win for making limp bizkit sound passable.

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

hehe, pipecock, why bother?

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:49 (eighteen years ago)

maybe its a dance music thing, but pretty much everyone i know that produces electronic music that involves samples totally flips out over dilla's stuff.

Crackle Box, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

"Yeah, Spacek was selling Creed figures in the early 00s. Good times.

-- Dom Passantino"

i know far more people with Spacek records than Creed records.

"xp keep that shit to dance music threads dude

-- deej"

why, i dont listen to just dance music. in fact, the shop i work at is largely a hiphop store, even though i don't like nearly as much new hiphop as i do dance music. i still don't sleep on the good shit and then act as if no one ever heard of it before i did.

"hehe, pipecock, why bother?

-- Crackle Box"

i'm bored.

pipecock, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

"maybe its a dance music thing, but pretty much everyone i know that produces electronic music that involves samples totally flips out over dilla's stuff.

the guy is popular with everyone i know, dance music cats, hiphop cats, neo-soul cats. because he made all of these things.

pipecock, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

i like dilla's shit but seeing him as the pinnacle of rap music is really fucking annoying and its the flip side to not actually liking rap

your favorite record of his doesnt even have rapping on it

deej, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

zumzumzum, really? mantronix?

I was thinking of his stuff with Just-Ice, mostly. There should've been a spot for him either way.

i have been listening to hiphop since i was 6 years old. the first albums i bought on my own were by the beasties, de la, and ll.

my favorite album of his may be instrumental, but my favorite tracks of his are all emcee jams: "pause", "fuck the police", "i don't know", "running", etc.

J0rdan S., Wednesday, 27 February 2008 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

Dre's gone pretty fucking far downhill too imho

dre should disqualified on the grounds that every decent beat hes done since 1997 was jacked or ghosted

I think Muggs did a couple of Funkdoobiest joints, but the bulk of the production on those records was handled by Ralph M. I think he did some stuff for Mellow Man too, but ost of his shit was the Dust Brothers, I think.

I have a Canibus album that's wholly produced by Stoupe, and it has some amazing beats. Other than that, I'm not at all familiar with his work. For some reason I've never ever listened to Jedi Mind Tricks, maybe because the name plus their album covers have given me the impression that they're a lame undie horrorcore crew. Maybe that's not true though?

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 27 February 2008 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

I voted for inventor-of-the-hip-hop-skit Prince Paul since it seems like he's gonna be underrepresented.

The beat to that song is comically mismatched to the lyrics.

I don't like the JMT rapper's flow on that tune. I think only M.O.P. and maybe DMX manage to pull off shouty rapping succesfully, he just sounds irritating. Is he always like that?

I don't think the winning trio was a surprise at all, though I would've excpected Dre to get more votes. Any way, white people favourites or not (which I've always found a silly argument), they've all made some brilliant beats.

But only one vote for Neptunes? Has their rating gone that low since their heyday? (Not that I've anything against that, I've always found their production kinda too shallow and gimmicky.)

I like Politics of the Business (Chubb Rock track is HIGHlarious) and Prince Paul's Paul Barman productions. Handsome Boy Modelling School not so much, but it isn't bad (and what is bad about it I attribute to the Automator, who is fucking horrible)

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 March 2008 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

Not recognizing the "horribleness" of the Automator is a strike against him, def.

Anyway I love Prince Paul so I'm not going to argue he's bad by any stretch. But like anyone who's been around for 20+ years he's made some missteps. Calling out the RZA for a bad album (which I still haven't heard) and pretending these other dudes always piss gold is pretty disingenuous.

Calling out the RZA for a bad album (which I still haven't heard) and pretending these other dudes always piss gold is pretty disingenuous.

my only contention was essentially that RZA's gold:shit ratio is probably a bit lower than the Bomb Squad and Prince Paul. I love Wu-Tang but RZA's cranked out some serious crap, especially lately.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 March 2008 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

Alex in SF, Thursday, 6 March 2008 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

My favourite RZA production work is possibly Digital Bullet, on it he proves he can do a wide variety of interesting beats outside his trademark murky style. Too bad the rapping isn't quite the same quality. The W has very cool and varying beats too, it's definitely the best-produced of the five Wu group albums.

Lolpez, Thursday, 6 March 2008 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

has the RZA really produced more than Prince Paul...? Paul's produced a LOT of stuff (Stetsasonic, De La, his own solo records, Barman, Justin Warfield lolz, etc.) and has been around longer.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 6 March 2008 23:47 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, Prefuse 73 isn't even on the list. Or Blockhead for that matter :(

Doen't matter. Prefuse, Nujabes, Fat Jon, or Nomak alone have all of them completely out-classed hands down anyway.

it means that they are very "white people approved". there is nothing wrong with either of them, but in a poll amongst non-white hiphop fans i sincerely doubt they would even be top 10.

PappaWheelie V, Sunday, 16 March 2008 04:04 (eighteen years ago)

Don't feel like reading through the whole post, but what is the big fucking controversy? RZA is the greatest Hip-Hop producer of all time, hands down. I wish I'd have seen this poll so I could have voted for him and increased his margin of victory.

brightscreamer, Sunday, 16 March 2008 04:30 (eighteen years ago)

guhh

ciderpress, Sunday, 16 March 2008 07:03 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Prince Paul, the skitmaster.

i guess this thread wouldn't have been explosive enough if it had been your "favorite" rap producers. i don't feel at all qualified to vote on "the best", but if i would have seen this poll, i would have voted for either premiere or beatnuts.

rockapads, Sunday, 16 March 2008 09:07 (eighteen years ago)

btw who produced 1-9-9-9 with sadat x and common? that is one of my favorite produced rap songs ever.

rockapads, Sunday, 16 March 2008 09:07 (eighteen years ago)

now of course i wish i woulda voted premo

-- M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 6 March 2008 18:42 (3 weeks ago)

I warned you all up-thread.

ablaeser, Friday, 28 March 2008 01:20 (seventeen years ago)

That said, if I hadn't voted for Premier I would have voted for RZA...

ablaeser, Friday, 28 March 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago)

Premo's solid, but let's face it. He's made the same beat 2,000 times over. Holla.
