wtf with all these Wu-Tang references in UMCs lyrics

Shakey Mo Collier, Saturday, 15 March 2008 00:29 (seventeen years ago)

interesting:

RZA:
At the time we were forming though there were some people who missed out on joining the Wu-Tang. Some just didn’t see the vision. They where like, ‘Fuck this Wu-Tang shit! We’re black, not Chinese!’ That always happens if you look at all the pivotal movement in history – some non-believers just don’t understand until its too late. It was around the same time that I remember UMCs come out, and they were cool, and in fact I’ve had conversations with people in Stapleton who were saying that it was because of UMCs coming out that Wu-Tang was able to come through. They had their success with the first single, ‘Blue Cheese’ and all that, but then their producer, RNS, stole Shyheim from me! Shyheim was already a little Wu-Tang soldier at the time, but UMCs were bringing out a watered-down version of this Staten Island shit and perhaps people thought that they were going to be the mega-megaton shit and so they went with them. They made their choices and they didn’t understand the Wu-Tang vision and how strong it was, but at the time Shyheim was rolling with the Black Gladiator Posse, which was already about to be infiltrated by Wu niggas.

RNS was the UMCs’ Producer and actually I liked his vibe. He had a sound that was sort of like Dre meets the RZA. He’s one of those untouched talented producers. I even did ‘Bring the Pain’ on the SP1200, ‘cos at the time I had the EPS [Ensoniq Performance Sampler] and I did ‘Method Man’ on that. I learned though that the EPS was better because the pitch of beats by pressing a key two notes down. It was superior.

A godlike album but is it really lost?

Kevin John Bozelka, Saturday, 15 March 2008 06:12 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, back in the 90s I heard some hip hop song and I've been trying to figure out who did it, when, etc. It had the following lyrics, which I will type out without linebreaks so it will look rather prosey, but here goes:

"Ever been freaked so good a tear rolls down your cheek your knees get weak you can't speak and your lips get dry and you begin to cry and you wonder why Gemini so fly, I'm not only in it just for me, I love to see a woman in excruciating ecstasy, come on

Ladies let your body flow, Gemini light you up like a Broadway show " etc.

Who was this? Any clues? Why do I still care?

Drew Daniel, Saturday, 15 March 2008 06:21 (seventeen years ago)

I've liked everything I've heard by Stezo, especially Crazy Noise.

Lately I've been listening to this album, and it's very good! Apparently Boss was discredited soon after the album for actually being middle-class and not a real gangsta, but who cares? Her flow and lyrics are tight, and the beats (by Erick Sermon, Def Jef, etc) are mostly great. In fact this is one of the best albums by a female rapper I've ever heard, better than Yo-Yo album that I mentioned for example.

Tuomas, Saturday, 22 March 2008 23:22 (seventeen years ago)

"soon after the album came out"

Tuomas, Saturday, 22 March 2008 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.deathrow-uncut.de/assets/images/Necessary_Roughness_ALBUM.gif

This goes a bit beyond the scope of this thread, since it's from 1997, but I want to give props to Necessary Roughness by The Lady of Rage. The beats on the album aren't particularly original (though they work), but as a pure lyricist she's very good, up to bar with almost any male rapper of the era, and the album definitely puts the emphasis on that. Even though it's on Death Row, it sounds more like mid-90s East Coast boom bap. Too bad her career went nowhere after this album.

Tuomas, Saturday, 22 March 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, I googled Marc Loi, and he seems to be some feminist guy...? Okay, I propped a couple of albums by female rappers, but so what? It's not like I don't think they're good albums no matter what gender of the rapper is. Though I have to say that one of the reasons they are lost/slept on is probably the fact that they are by female rappers. It's not like rap is an equal opportunity game.

Tuomas, Sunday, 23 March 2008 09:44 (seventeen years ago)

Marc Loi has the guts to say things you won't, Tuomas. I notice you're not talking about Hilary Clinton much these days.
