J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 April 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

I like Already Platinum a lot but it definitely feels like a misstep now...Neptunes was just kind of an odd choice and there's no doubt that the album would have been much stronger if he had just kept it Houston/"Southern" sounding...maybe should have put it in though

Yeah, about half that album is great. About half that album is just totally whatever, tho.

Rap albums from '05 I still listen to: Common, Jeezy, 36M. I would have picked Common at the time and I'm not going to second guess myself now.

I probably like Late Registration most but I'm voting for Tha Carter II since I still like it more than any of the overrated Weezy mixtapes since then.

the Lil Kim album was not worth 5 mics but still not bad, might be my fav that hasn't been mentioned yet. Cassidy's album that year was good, too. (lol deej xpost)

Little Brother - The Minstrel Show (Atlantic)
If you like this record you’re either hopelessly nostalgic for the native tongue era or you’ve never heard any of those classic records and think LB are doing something fresh. Either way you probably should just be listening to Bulhoone Mindstate.

Bingo.

deej, Thursday, 17 April 2008 18:34 (seventeen years ago)

at the time I thought Thug Motivation as an insta-classic was almost as offensive as The Documentary, but after Jeezy's awful 2nd album I think I'd be ready to give the first one its props. fuck The Game, still, though.

The Cookbook >>>> her last couple albums with Timbo before it

Pretty much, although I do think he grew as a rapper somewhat on his second, which may be more consistent (yeah, I know), but that one didn't have anything as great as the better tracks on The Documentary.

I still think the Paul Wall album was the best of 05, though. Dude was just the right mix of braggart and weirdo. The song about trolling for ass on MySpace was as real as things got in 2005.

They put out a 12" of "The Food" with both the studio and Chappelle versions in 2004. The studio version is actually the weaker of the two, so they knew what they were doing when they put the Chappelle version on the album.

[Verse 3: Cam'Ron]
Killa killa, more killin' killin' for killa killa
Feel the deal, the chinchillas, they can fit on gorillas
Santana, bananas, clip bananas, wrapped in bandannas
Hammers, hammers, no cameras, you'll be runnin to nana (nana nana)
Nana nana Santana, he be holding berettas
Killa killa kills civilians, you know I'm no better
Mo' betta' betta', cheddar cheddar, you'll be dead on your leather
For cheddar cheddar, heads we sever, go get it together
Get it together, now now get my pape's right
Come through late night
I know what it tastes like (what's that?)
Some good coke, dawg, go get your base pipe
Put on my Laker jersey, then I go rape white (number 8)
You got G ma, I got G too, shit

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)

deej, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

deej, Thursday, 17 April 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)

man im just saying that i rarely like cam's flow on songs and that juelz is better spitting a verse at a time than doing a whole song and that i like his "freestyles" over famous beats better than a lot of shit he has recorded

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)

Be just might be the best hip-hop album of the 2000s.

ha i had you pegged for royce

deej, Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:28 (seventeen years ago)

i didn't see him on the poll though! but i would have probably if he were on it.

but you know, quasi-east coast style semi popular kinda thuggy but kinda lyrical dudes are my siren song.

i haven't heard grandmasters or cormega i bet i would love those too.

M@tt He1ges0n, Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

Oh and the studio version of "The Food" is like 100000X better than the live version. It sounds better, isn't censored, and has an extra verse.

ablaeser, Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:52 (seventeen years ago)

ysi?

J0rdan S., Thursday, 17 April 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

It sounds less raw, who cares, and has an extra zzzzzzzz verse.

The Reverend, Thursday, 17 April 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

And has less energy.

The Reverend, Thursday, 17 April 2008 22:30 (seventeen years ago)

The Gza/Muggs album is kind of flat in a way I won't attempt to describe without listening to it again.

The Reverend, Thursday, 17 April 2008 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

"Love is" is prob the best track on Be, but "The Corner" is still my (totally obv) favorite.

The risks to ethan's health/sanity notwithstanding, I wouldn't mind seeing a few more polls like this one.

tpp, Monday, 21 April 2008 16:41 (seventeen years ago)

let's pick another year in this thread and put together the nominations list here, so that when the next thread starts people don't have to use most of it bitching about what wasn't included. 2004? 2006? some 90s year?

Alex in Baltimore, Monday, 21 April 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)

i'd still like to see yall do this w/ singles (obv pairing down would be harder, maybe use the egotrip lists if you're doing like way back). also 90s plz.

balls, Monday, 21 April 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

I think nominations for the 00s polls will be more interesting and open to debate - ego trip's got the 90s more or less covered..

tpp, Monday, 21 April 2008 17:51 (seventeen years ago)

for singles the rub's 'history of hip hop' mixes might help as a starting point
http://www.itstherub.com/radio.htm

a little ny parochial, esp. in the early 90s, but what are ya gonna do
