I think that's a staggering load of tepid, runny crap. I don't care if she sold more that Presley. Ultimately, he was kinda crap as well.

I love Mariah Carey. Mariah Carey's music saved little ghetto children's lives. Songs like "Vision of Love" gave us hope and we would sing those songs and try to hit every note like Mariah -- which we can't. I don't think she knows what a big part she plays in Bodrick III's life. And then to meet her….she's such a beautiful person that you can't do anything but defend her when [the media] starts acting stupid on her. She doesn't deserve that.

― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 26 April 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)
Haha. Well, Mariah Carey does have a really good voice. And her voice can be very expressive, but a lot of times it isn't. I sometimes get the feeling she isn't trying very hard (beyond cooing and purring in her later songs), but that's probably my preconceived notions.
Still, I'm not sure I can name a better pop voice -- in terms of pure voice -- in her generation.
― Daniel, Esq., Saturday, 26 April 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)
She's ok. I would probably enjoy her singing more if the majority of her songs weren't complete shit.
She did sing/write the best original Xmas song of the past 20 years, no doubt.
― billstevejim, Saturday, 26 April 2008 23:25 (seventeen years ago)
So what are we talking about here? Something objective like who can hit the most notes and sustain them the longest times?
Or more abstract stuff like "soul" or something. Or ability to interpret lyrics? Or having a badass 'tude that carries a song even if the voice can't really.

― Alex in NYC, Sunday, 27 April 2008 12:10 (seventeen years ago)
I didn't ask anyone to cowtow to my taste, I merely opined. The question remains: Do you agree with the statement that she's the "greatest singer of our generation".
― Alex in NYC, Sunday, 27 April 2008 12:12 (seventeen years ago)
Why not? I hate shtoopid generalisations like that, but I can see how somebody who was generalisation-inclined could make that argument.
― Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 April 2008 12:14 (seventeen years ago)
Fair enough, I suppose. I just strikes me that it's just accepted 'wisdom' because she's sold so many albums -- it's the same argument, ironically, as the Elvis album title "X00,000 Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong". Sure they can. Mass crowds of people can be wrong.
― Alex in NYC, Sunday, 27 April 2008 12:16 (seventeen years ago)
Sure people can be wrong, but I don't think wrong comes into it where taste is concerned. I find a lot of Mariah's stuff too cheeseball for my taste, but there's obviously a hell of a lot of people who love what she does and that seems a fair enough argument for being a great singer.
― Noodle Vague, Sunday, 27 April 2008 12:19 (seventeen years ago)

I don't agree that "Elvis was kinda crap as well" (some of his material yes, Elvis, no)
Bob Lefsetz and the baby-boom rock fans who e-mail him are now obsessed with Mariah allegedly lipsynching:
Hey Bob. Instead of challenging us to sing three Mariah Carey songs, maybe you should challenge Mariah to sing those three songs herself. Have you caught any of her most recent live performances on Oprah or American Idol? Hell, even go back to Live 8. She has taken to lipsyncing the second half of her songs. It's quite curious. She starts off...tolerable. Face it, she doesn't even have much of a low range anymore, then, when the song swells and the bigger vocals come in, cue the backing track! It's hilarious. She starts flailing her arms, pointing to the crowd and running around the stage, as if this entire act helps her muster the energy to bring those big notes to life. It's a horrible cover-up. I wonder just how much Pro-Tooling was done on E=MC2? Hooray for Melodyne. from a letter to Leftsetz in his April 24 "Does Mariah Sing" live posting

Elvis and Mariah are both just a voice and nothing else. Elvis is overrated by virtually everyone, Mariah Carey is overrated by audiences only, while she is rated just about right by the critics.

― billstevejim, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)
..although a handful of songs by both Elvis and Mariah are pretty outstanding.
nah, Mariah's written/co-written too many incredibly fun pop songs to be considered "only a voice."
And Elvis, in addition to his beautiful voice, was a performer and a cultural phenomenon.
― Surmounter, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:35 (seventeen years ago)
Mariah's written/co-written too many incredibly fun pop songs to be considered "only a voice."
I've never heard any. Most of what I heard is either boring MOR ballads or even worse tuneless R&B crap.
― Geir Hongro, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
that's your opinion. objectively, she's done more than just sing.
― Surmounter, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:38 (seventeen years ago)
In theory, Elvis was sometimes credited as a writer too.
I generally find a co-credit hard to take seriously unless the same artist has either written some songs all by him/herself or, like Madonna, has a distinctive composition style that makes all the songs sound sort of melodically similar in spite of different songwriting partners.
― Geir Hongro, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:41 (seventeen years ago)
(and, also, like Elton John obv - he has never had a 100 per cent credit either, but he always composed the actual music all by himself)
― Geir Hongro, Sunday, 27 April 2008 19:42 (seventeen years ago)
Too bad his compositions kind of suck

Mariah circa the early 90s is pretty untouchable. Definitely better than the other candidates of her time (Whitney, Celine, Vanessa, Toni, Anita). I prefer Toni Braxton but Mariah has the talent, the cross-demographic appeal and the accolades to be seriously considered the best singer of her time.
― HI DERE, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)
I don't get what Mariah Carey does that's so different from Christina Aguilera.
― billstevejim, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)
she doesn't always sound like a trumpet
― Surmounter, Sunday, 27 April 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)
"Saving All My Love For You" is a much better song and performance than Mariah Carey has ever come close to. And "How Will I Know" is a better uptempo pop song than any of Mariah's too. Around 90-91, Carey may have been slightly better than Houston, but Toni Braxton would soon walk both anyway.
As for Christina Aguilera. No, she has no more talent than any of the others. Not in any way. Which is why there is no reason to like her either.

Isn't it possible to enjoy things about Mariah Carey other than how well she can sing? Good singers do nothing for me.
I just counted up the songs of hers I actually like.. Vision Of Love, I'll Be There, Dreamlover, All I Want For Christmas Is You, Fantasy w/ ODB, Honey & Heartbreaker are ok. I also like Someday & Make It Happen for nostalgic purposes. Yes she's a good singer, but not everyone is into vocal gymnastics.

after all this time, vision of love is still my fave of hers. i never got tired of that song. and they used to play it every five minutes on the radio way back when.
i guess i like un-break my heart as much as vision of love. since someone mentioned toni.
and i guess i like save the best for last as much as those two songs.
but whitney...man, i haven't really cared abut whitney that much as a singer since her first album came out! which was a million years ago. she's a better singer than mariah though.
― scott seward, Monday, 28 April 2008 21:10 (seventeen years ago)

vision of love is old news, boys. that was old mariah. new mariah doesn't sing songs like that anymore. now she sings hip-hop songs about fellas frontin' with the pitch-perfect voice of a hooker on crack. ::shudder:: geez you just gotta love it.

If Carey really did popularize the vocal style that formed the template for American Idol and American Idol-type singers, or if her version of that vocal style (rococo melismatic singing) is really innovative, then that's arguably some compelling evidence of her significance.

and her voice has a pleasant quality to it that doesn't give you a headache like some of the other stuff
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 15:37 (seventeen years ago)
If Carey really did popularize the vocal style that formed the template for American Idol and American Idol-type singers, or if her version of that vocal style (rococo melismatic singing) is really innovative, then that's arguably some compelling evidence of her significance. Myself, I've always blamed Whitney Houston for forming the template for that style (you call it "rococo melismatic," I call it oversinging). Both Houston and Carey are loaded with talent; I just don't like the way they use it, as well as the fact that every American Idol wannabe tries to copy their style. Just recently I was at opening day for Little League game and a male singer — looked about 17 — was doing the "Star Spangled Banner" a cappella in this style. It's rampant. I wonder if high school kids even realize there are different ways to sing. I completely concur that either Whitney or Mariah is the most influential singer of our generation, but not the greatest. They both leave me completely cold. I don't care how pretty your voice is or how many notes you can make out of one syllable — you have to sell the song to me.
― Jazzbo, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 16:06 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, see I think Mariah actually does let that stuff serve the song
― gabbneb, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)
relatively-speaking, at least
ditto... especially cuz she can be so soft about it. she's not always explosive.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 16:13 (seventeen years ago)
also, don't forget, she's hot
― gabbneb, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)
I just think she overdoes it, and far too many up and coming singers think that's the only way to go. Billie Holiday is considered by many to be the greatest jazz singer ever, and she sang like two notes! Today's pop singers think they have to cram as many notes as possible into a song, as if the entire audience had ADHD. Besides, if you want to hear some great melismatic singing, then dig out some old gospel records. Or Sam Cooke, Aretha Franklin, Clyde McPhatter.
― Jazzbo, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 16:31 (seventeen years ago)
Isn't the Whitney/Mariah style just a slightly more polished virtuoso approach to style that countless soul/gospel/disco singers had been doing for years, if not decades, before them? I mean, maybe one/either of them can be considered the Eddie Van Halen figure that raised the stakes on a technical level, but it's not like they deserve that much credit, or blame, for the existence of melisma in popular singing.

I think everyone who blames or accuses mariah of showy, melismatic should listen to some of her songs post-daydream for some of the subtle genius she's capable of.

of course, like 90% of critics/ilxors talking about things they dont actually know about, folx here are blaming individuals for certain styles that have long-running historic narratives and contexts Well duh, we all know melisma has been around for centuries. My gripe is that Whitney/Mariah are taking it to the extreme, as if they're more concerned with one-upmanship than the song itself.
― Jazzbo, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 18:10 (seventeen years ago)
or maybe they just like to sing that way...
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 18:19 (seventeen years ago)
and incidentally the whitney/mariah comparison is valid but somewhat overplayed.

i thought the jody rosen slate bit was really great, i'd like to hear some reaction to it from some people who aren't pants-pissing r&b haters. i'd never really liked mariah carey's music very much, so i've never paid her much mind: was the shift from tommy mattola/MOR stuff to dupri/"mariah-pacifiah"/hip hop stuff really that sharp & pronounced? did she lose an audience?
this is just awz btw:

it was very pronounced, and it lost me for some time. i say it happened with the single "Honey." i hated it at first, wanting the full-bodied voice back, and the sweeter tunes. but now i'm all for the slinky, breathy mariah, on top of hip-hop beats. it's totally different.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 18:36 (seventeen years ago)

to be honest i don't even think mariah is that extreme about it. i mean i don't ever really notice it as extreme. you want extreme in this dept., listen to christina.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)
but really the problem w what you said is the idea that whitney/mariah somehow represent some kind of 'extreme'
― deej, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 18:48 (seventeen years ago)
They represent an 'extreme' because their melismatic singing style adds notes that are 'more than words.'

that's my take, but i'm not well-versed when it comes to internet zingage.
1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. 2. A robot must obey orders given to it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. 3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.

I have learned to cherish Carey's singing for its brute force, blinding technique, and, yes, showboatiness—to place Mariah's vocal "runs" in the tradition of John Coltrane's "sheets of sound," the pummeling drumming of Led Zeppelin's John Bonham, and Eddie Van Halen's "Eruption"

Beyonce, as a singer, walks all over Mariah Carey. Mariah has a tremendous range and can do some genuinely awesome stuff at the top of it, but Beyonce seems to put a lot more thought/talent/whatever-it-is-that-makes-singers-sing-better-than-other-singers into where to put the emphasis, how to swing a line, etc. bias from me though is that I like some of Beyonce's material and very little if any of Mariah's. (Offhand I can't think of any Mariah I've heard that I liked.)
this though:
is fucking crazy talk

― Surmounter, Saturday, 3 May 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)
i think something mariah does really well is play with her vocals. whereas other singers might bring it home with more emotion, i always feel like mariah is having fun with her voice.
― Surmounter, Saturday, 3 May 2008 21:12 (seventeen years ago)
One of the reasons why Beyonce comes across better than Mariah nowadays is that Mariah has blown out the middle of her range.

it's easy to forget mariah's vocal phrasing, because she's so widely regarded for her range and power, but she achieves a lot with the way she articulates her words. her signature hip-hop accent, intensifying over the years, now strongly inflects her phrasing as well. it seems to allow her personality to fill out the words more.

From this post:
A black Honda pulled up next to them and the passenger, William H. Greenman, 22, yelled at Schreiber, calling him a derogatory name for listening to Mariah Carey, reports said. "POPIST!"-- Ned Raggett, Monday, May 19, 2008 5:49 PM (3 days ago)

I was hoping and hoping that the story would be about a crazed indiefuXXor Pitchfork reader bottling Ryan.

No I don't, but she can certainly do a lot more with her voice than Beyonce.

Out of curiosity (I think we've talked about this before), is it the entire genre you find unacceptable or specifically these performers? I'm curious as to what you think about someone like Leona Lewis, who's still a full-on pop singer but had a massive hit basically equating falling in love with killing yourself (co-written by Hillary Duff, apparently! lolz).

haha. that song is intense.

Can't say I've heard Leona Lewis' music. If by this entire genre you mean R&B, I'd say I don't like the majority of it, but there are exceptions, however fleeting (again -- Luther Vandross is untouchably great). Honestly, because I don't like 99% of it, it should therefore be noted that I don't know much about it, so my opinions should be factored accordingly. I'm still wincing from certain folks taking my words here FAR TOO SERIOUSLY.
Mariah Carey has a more accomplished voice than Beyonce. That doesn't mean that I like what she does with it, but were they ever in some sort of Olympic sing-off, Mariah would handily trounce her.
