i need to think about this a bit, but i want to see more answers. "Official Girl" is number one. "No Air" is number two. And it starts to get confusing after that (and OMG the chorus of that Annie song)

Tape Store, Monday, 7 July 2008 01:52 (seventeen years ago)

Portishead "Small"

matinee, Monday, 7 July 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)

I'm going to list 15, because (a) I've included a handful of re-released/previously lost or unavailable songs, and I'm not sure they should count and (b) I've been so down on this year's new releases that I'm looking at this exercise as a way to reapproach 2008's offerings. With that in mind, here are 15 songs I've liked so far this year (in no order except that the first two songs -- both reissues -- are, by far, the best things I've heard this year):

Dennis Wilson -- It's Not Too Late
Spirit Of Israel -- Daniel
Annie -- I Know Your Girlfriend Hates Me
Atlas Sound -- Recent Bedroom
The Raveonetts -- You Want The Candy
Portishead -- Silence
Cut Copy -- Heart's On Fire
Mingering Mike -- Coffee Cake
My Morning Jacket -- Touch Me I'm Going To Scream (Pt. I)
Neon Neon -- Dream Cars
Mountain Goats -- Sept. 15, 1983
Why? -- Good Friday
Sian Alice Group -- Way Down To Heaven
Sun Kil Moon -- Heron Blue
Dengue Fever -- Sober Driver

This is heavily weighted toward indie rock, I guess. I like indie rock. Beyond that, (a) I haven't heard much exciting new stuff from other genres I enjoy (e.g., "world music," jazz) and (b) usually by now a handful of outstanding pop songs grabs my attention (last year it was Rihanna's Umbrella), but that hasn't happened so far this year. I do sort of like that "Sometimes I wake up early in the morning to play my con-con-congos" funky house song, but I'm not sure that's even a 2008 release, and it might be mostly novelty, too (haven't decided yet). Also, that Steinski reissue disc (What Does It All Mean) is great, but I'm not sure I could single out a particular song from it to include on this list.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 7 July 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

That Mingering Mike song is a novelty, too. I still love it. Can't really say why.

Daniel, Esq., Monday, 7 July 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

This is missing a lot (and will be fixed later), but here's what comes to mind (roughly in order):
Cassie - "Official Girl"
Jordan Sparks feat. Chris Brown - "No Air"
Colby O'Donis feat. Akon - "What You Got"
Lil Mama - "L.I.F.E."/"A Milli Freestyle"
Alphabeat - "Fascination"
Mahjongg - "Rise Rice"
The Juan Maclean - "Happy House"
Hercules and the Love Affair feat. Antony - "Blind"

Mariah Carey - "Lovin' You Long Time"
Cupid feat. B.o.B. - "369"
Mariah Carey - "Touch My Body"
Wiley - "Wearing My Rolex"
Lil Wayne - "A Milli"
Mighty Infamous feat. Big Face, Mike Smoove - "Duck Down"
Mighty Infamous - "So Ghetto 08"
Cherish - "Killa"

Jazmine Sullivan - "Need You Bad"
T2 feat Addicted - "Gonna Be Mine"

T.I. - "No Matter What"
Erykah Badu - "Honey"/"Soldier"/"The Healer"
Keri Hilson - "Energy"
Kleerup feat. Merit something - "3AM"
Scarlett Johannson - "Falling Down"

Need to hear more of:
Ciara - "High Price" (for the record: yes, i am on this track's side)
Annie - "Songs Remind Me Of You" (and in a much less controversial ftr: yes, i am on this track's side)

Question:
Is Pilooski's edit of "Send Him Back" from 2007 or 2008? It's AWESOME. Everything I've heard from him is, actually.

Also:
Hmm, are we considering "LES Artistes" 2008? I should have put it on last year's top ten, but i zoned out.

Tape Store, Monday, 7 July 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

Hercules and the Love Affair feat. Antony - "Blind"

Damn. Forgot that one. Blind is a fantastic song. I like Antony far more when he's collaborating with others on more upbeat material.

Dr. Carter makes me feel seasick.

Mordy, Thursday, 10 July 2008 04:25 (seventeen years ago)

two months pass...

If anyone has 3/4-year top 10's, I'd be interested in seeing.

Based on reading through a few threads including this one, I seem to be among the minority who is overwhelmingly unimpressed with 2008 music. Please help.

billstevejim, Saturday, 27 September 2008 02:28 (seventeen years ago)

Double Leaning Jowler (The Reverend), Sunday, 28 September 2008 23:30 (seventeen years ago)

Curmudgeon, Carl Sims has one "s." That website misspells it. But more importantly, it totally blows my mind that he would be mentioned in this thread!

Patrick South, Monday, 29 September 2008 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

I wanna shake up the normal expected top songs here (not that I don't like some of 'em), plus I really do like Ecko and Malaco and other label Southern bluesy soul. I should add some of my fave Caribbean, African and Latino songs as well.

curmudgeon, Monday, 29 September 2008 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

I'd be interested in the Caribbean and African selections.

As for Carl Sims, his stuff tends to run awfully close to the Blues demo setting on a keyboard. His last album 'Get Ready', as well as those that came before it, is almost amusingly bad/cliched/generic, though feel-good at the same time (and his lyrics can be hilarious). I just heard his latest album, though, and it's one of his more tasteful albums musically, by and large.

Patrick South, Monday, 29 September 2008 01:46 (seventeen years ago)

guys, i know i'm the last person here to discover it, but FUNKY HOUSE is incredible!!!!

"When I Grow Up" has a pretty massive chorus!

"when i grow up" is awesome and is better than tons of shit on blackout

'when i grow up' is a huge banger but not as good as the best singles off their first album, and wouldn't make my top 10. then again i'm going to end up frantically trying to cram about 100 tracks in there, so.

lex pretend, Monday, 29 September 2008 07:45 (seventeen years ago)

im sad that the pcd album is going to bomb. i really have no interest in hearing it and even though i find the actions of major labels nowadays either detestable, laughworthy or both, i kind of still want them to be able to pour huge amounts of money into a talentless group and reap the benefits of it

you have been yellow carded by an actual referee (J0rdan S.), Monday, 29 September 2008 07:56 (seventeen years ago)

No mention of Spiritualized thusfar. hmmmm...

Pillbox, Monday, 29 September 2008 09:22 (seventeen years ago)

The new PCD single "I Hate This Part" is really good, much better than "When I Grow Up" I reckon.

well, we've got like 20% of the year left so it's probably a good thing if people still have room on their LOVE lists. i still don't really have a firm album or singles list, a lot of things i LIKE being shuffled up and down the latter. (xpost)

some dude, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

don't know how many this is but it's pretty much casually throwing together all the songs i think are "top 10-worthy" from this year, with some help from last.fm. probably incomplete, esp wrt techno, it's more "tracks" than "singles". left off artists whose albums hit me more as ~albums~ like erykah badu, ne-yo, gang gang dance, anja schneider, akiko kiyama, lindstrom, luomo.

how in the world am i going to narrow this down???

100 Yard Dash is the most grating track on the album!

Patrick South, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)

i didn't find it grating, and it's not quite so heavily stylised as some of the other tracks, but i have only had the thing for one week so we'll see how things go

lex pretend, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:14 (seventeen years ago)

deerhunter - "nothing ever happened"
sigur ros - "gobbledigook"
walkmen - "in the new year"

marnie stern - "steely"
fredrik - "alina's place"
glasvegas - "flowers and football tops" (this album was very frustrating)
department of eagles - "no one does it like you"
portastatic - "some small history"
jerusalem and the starbaskets - "i cannot radiato without you"

― Kevin Keller, Thursday, October 16, 2008 10:38 PM (2 weeks ago)
switch "nonpariel of favor" with "an eluardian instance" from the stellar skeletal lamping
take off J+S "radiato", don't know why i put that on there, though i like the song
although the Glasvegas record gets worse with each spin, i still like that song a lot
replace "no one does it like you" with "while you wait for the others" by grizzly bear (i'm counting it!)
maybe "punk trips" or "shredders on fry" by eat skull

aside from that, keep it the same

Kevin Keller, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:15 (seventeen years ago)

Matos W.K., Friday, 31 October 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)

Many of those aren't singles, obv. For convenience's sake I stuck to the top of the two lists I've made so far (http://m-matos.blogspot.com/2008/07/im-not-nate-im-nowhere-near-as.html and http://m-matos.blogspot.com/2008/10/been-while-since-i-made-year-so-far.html, if you're interested) but there's stuff underneath them that will likely bob upward when I recablibrate everything. I'm ridiculously backed up on singles, albums, MP3s, life, but I've been bearing down and seeing all these lists will certainly help kick me into higher gear.

Matos W.K., Friday, 31 October 2008 20:40 (seventeen years ago)

I guess I found 100 Yard Dash grating because it's this simple melody repeated on guitar (with a tone that bugs me) again and again until the song's 2 minutes are up. Basically, it's the kind of song that you only need to hear once. The song doesn't go anywhere, which is why it's so short. Also, I feel like the track is one of the MORE stylised tracks on the album--as if its only purpose is to yell out, "Hey, I nailed the Motown sound!"

Patrick South, Friday, 31 October 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha he nails the Motown sound all over the album

Matos W.K., Friday, 31 October 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

Right now looks something like:

1. Usher - "Love in the Club"
2. Young Jeezy - "Put On (ft. Kanye)"

i see what you're saying, but that's not all i listen to. it definitely makes up the majority, though (i don't see a problem with this). then again, there isn't an "umbrella" yet this year (that i've heard at least), which is one of the best songs of the decade imo.

Kevin Keller, Saturday, 1 November 2008 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

Okay... 2008
No Age "Teen Creeps"
Hot Chip "We're Looking For A Lot Of Love"
Holy Ghost! "Hold On"
Estelle "American Boy"
Vampire Weekend "A-Punk"
The Mars Volta "Goliath"
Black Moth Super Rainbow "Zodiac Girls"
Wolf Parade "Soldier's Grin"
Of Montreal "Id Engager"
The Sword "Fire Lances Of The Ancient Zypherians"

...compared to 2007...
Ne-Yo "Because Of You"
Yo Majesty "Club Action" (Yo! EP version)
Simian Mobile Disco "I Believe"
Radiohead "15 Step"
Justin Timberlake "Until The End Of Time (Remix)"
Studio "Origin"
Pinback "From Nothing To Nowhere"
DJ Unk f/ Andre 3000 "Walk It Out (Remix)"
Modest Mouse "Missed The Boat"
Spoon "You Got Yr Cherry Bomb"

Okay, 2008 is def a step down.. partially because there's virtually no top 40 I've been enjoying this year. Usually that's one aspect that will bring overall quality rating up or down for me.. But in comparison with what preceded, every year since 2005 has gradually gotten worse, and I'm fairly sure that right now is as bad as it gets. I have yet to hear a single remarkable release, single or album, that's been released in 2008. I keep getting pumped for all these forthcoming releases, and they all turn out to be more of the same shit. I'll hear or read about something that's been gaining attention, and it turns out to be more of the same shit. The state of the world right now is suggesting that this will not last much longer, so hopefully there is light coming soon.

billstevejim, Saturday, 1 November 2008 06:01 (seventeen years ago)

i dunno, for me, 2007 was a pretty memorable year, both mainstream and underground.

Kevin Keller, Saturday, 1 November 2008 06:29 (seventeen years ago)

People who make definitive statements like "this year sucks" almost always have bad taste in music anyways, and their way of thinking about their taste in music even worse.

I think even on the level of genre it's hard to make these calls - was this a good year for hip hop or a bad year for hip hop? Maybe it was a good/bad year for hip-hop-you-like.

I would confidently say that this year has been a bad year for commercial dance, in the sense that the dance music that mostly charted was bad and the stuff that theoretically is both good and populist doesn't have a big enough profile (yet) to chart. But we're talking about a fairly limited claim here, which mostly boils down to "I'm over 'brazen' post-post-electro-house tedium."

Tim F, Saturday, 1 November 2008 07:07 (seventeen years ago)

well thank god no one said "this year sucks", then, right?

Dimension 5ive, Saturday, 1 November 2008 15:42 (seventeen years ago)

I have less confidence in my singles list than pretty much any year, ever; it's a mess. I never hear the radio anymore, I don't download anything unless I have to review it somewhere and I have no choice, so it's really hard to hear any singles as singles, which is pretty much what I require in my head. My song of the year, by far, would be "High Cost of Living" by Jamey Johnson, which (1) isn't a single and (2) is also on my favorite album the year, which would probably disqualify it for my singles list even if it was a single. That said, here are 25 singles (in vaguely descending order of preference) that I'm more or less considering:

Miley Cyrus – “See You Again”
Phil Vassar – “Love Is a Beautiful Thing”
Sister Sin – “One Out Of Ten”
Buraka Som Sistema featuring Pongolove – “Kalemba (Wegue Wegue)”
V.I.C. – “Wobble”
Cyndi Lauper – “Into The Nightlife”
Kid Sister featuring David Banner – “Family Reunion”
Sway featuring $tush – “F Ur X”
Scooter – “The Question Is What Is The Question”
Arcade Lover – “Fantasy Lines”
Alphabet – “Boyfriend (Pete Hammond Remix)”
Early Man – “Sinking The Blade” (lead song on 4-song EP, therefore a single by definition in my book)
Alphabeat – “Fascination”
Blackout Crew – “Put A Donk On It”
M.I.A. – “Paper Planes”
Ashlee Simpson – “Outta My Head”
Kid Rock – “All Summer Long”
Runrig – “Clash Of The Ash”
Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons – “Beggin’ (Piloski Edit)”
The Knux – “Cappucino”
Prima J – “Rock Star”
Ashlee Simpson – “Little Miss Obsessive”
Ryan Shaw – “Do The 45”
Vein featuring Pitbull –“Get Up Stand Up”
Hot Stylz Featuring Young Joc – “Lookin’ Boy”

And four more songs that I'm pretty sure aren't singles, but would be in the running if they were singles, so if anybody knows otherwise, please let me know:

Daveigh Chase – "The Happiest Girl In the Whole U.S.A."
Maria Daniela Y Su Sonido Lasser – Duri Duri"
The Swear – “Chicago”
Kathleen Edwards – “I Make The Dough, You Get The Glory”

xhuxk, Saturday, 1 November 2008 17:29 (seventeen years ago)

most of the lists posted after mine are only reminding me of songs i missed out of my list, not helping me trim it down at all...

Was released in July of 2007; the Puppets, sadly, had no releases in 2008.

But while we're on the subject, http://archive.wfpk.org/LiveLunch/20080314LL-meatpuppets.mp3 is definitely worth a listen.

The Kath Edwards is definitely a single - stumbled across the video on Yootoob a couple weeks ago. It is also very definitely year-end material.

I ain't got the foggiest what my list will be - since I've not written regularly anywhere, it feels like there's gonna be tons of stuff missing. I think I may have fallen into a hole sometime around March and not emerged until mid-September.

'No Air' ftw, is what I think I'm trying to say here.

haha i thought 'dreamer' was an olympics song? my copy's tagged as "2008 olympics" anyway, and it suits the song to the ground.

my favourite item from the similarly ubiquitous rihanna is also a random b-side/bonus track (i don't even know which countries, not this one) - 'haunted' is this amazingly claustrophobic ballad w/distinct rebecca undertones.

also i urge anyone who loves 'a black man in space' to check out the ame remix of etienne jaumet's 'repeat again after me' - spooky ascending melody, messy saxophone climax.
