The Inevitable New Jay-Z Album: Blueprint 3

Inevitably started by me.

Word is it's "entirely" Ye's production work.

First track finally leaked in full a couple hours ago: http://tinyurl.com/577w9a

As per usual I'm at work and can't listen to it, so somebody tell me how terrible it is so that I don't get my hopes up.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:16 (seventeen years ago)

its kind of a mess but i like it

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:20 (seventeen years ago)

That is v nearly a ringing endorsement via u!

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

beats any of the singles off his last two except maybe "roc boys"

btw so is this kanye's "a milli" rip?

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)

i mean look he is still a C+ rapper on this and is still rapping about some puzzling shit-- oasis beef, calling himself "high fashionique" and shit like that, but the beat really works cuz it doesn't require him to actually ride anything, which is when he's been utterly awful lately ("i know")

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S. authoritatively reminds us that Jay-Z is a "C+ rapper"

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:35 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I mean (this is not an apologetic for the fuckin *whisper flow*) it's always been dude's freedom in engaging w/his beats that makes him so interesting to me. He's always had one of the jazziest flows in rap, and that's part of the reason why I keep listening.

xp

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)

Hurting come on I'm the biggest Hov stan on ILM and even I'll admit that lots of his recent output, "I Know" being a prominent example, is subpar.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

dude based on kingdom come/american gangster + various scattered verses i think "C+ rapper" is being generous

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

im too lazy to troll you right now but lets be honest

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:38 (seventeen years ago)

also i dont think i want to have the "jay-z isn't that good anymore" discussion on ilm again

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago)

for serious though this track is pretty weak

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:39 (seventeen years ago)

yep xp

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:44 (seventeen years ago)

btw so is this kanye's "a milli" rip?

buh? just ima hustler x 99 problems with swizzy/rocky mania switched for (weirdly leaden) 80s minimal.

totally tedious tune.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:47 (seventeen years ago)

Better than I expect from a late-era Jigga single.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:49 (seventeen years ago)

knowing the way kanye obsesses over really popular and margin-pushing songs that he doesn't make (esp rap songs), i wouldn't be surprised if this was influenced by "a milli", in the sample and the bass (very un-kanye) and just the structure of the song in general

it definitely doesn't sound like anything he's been doing lately

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:53 (seventeen years ago)

i don't really dig this.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 05:24 (seventeen years ago)

RIP

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 12 August 2008 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

OMG only listened to a minute, but it was really good!. i skipped ahead, though, and i'm not sure that beat really holds up w/o some manipulation for 3+ minutes.

Tape Store, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 06:00 (seventeen years ago)

lol at this dude still being butthurt over Gallagher zings four fucking months on. Noel OG has moved back onto zinging "spotty herbert" indie bands again.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 08:58 (seventeen years ago)

like a good parochial. dude being butthurt = dude understanding tabloid culture sells, especially in some places.

i think jay told us all a couple years ago that he's very comfortable being a "C+ rapper" - no more interest in flowing futuristic - and some of us are very comfortable with the same

Masta Ace at least got a "featuring" credit when he did that on "Drivin Down The Block"

Jordan, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 15:26 (seventeen years ago)

M@tt He1ges0n, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 15:53 (seventeen years ago)

one month passes...

Okay just got the news on the new LP. The Tracklisting on the internet is completely false, with the exception of possibly Most Kings but even that has been changed as Jay gave Chris Martin the original verse for a Coldplay song. Kanye West produced the entire album with a sound that combines the best of Kanye, Swizz, and Dilla. Think about how Swagga Like Us has the vocal sample with the Swiss Effect, the drums of Dilla by not being on some straight up boom boom bap sound, and the Electronic/European sounds of the keyboards used on the swagger joint.

Timbaland originally said he was doing the album, at which point Kanye flew to Germany to meet up with Jigga, gave him one beat cd with fifteen or so joints on it and after that it was a wrap. Kanye then flew to Hawaii where Jay was working and from there they knocked it out. The sound is not Love Lockdown so don’t worry about that. It’s more about some hardcore Hip-Hop with a bit of Hardcore Rock and Electronic. It will definitely satisfy the heads while appealing to the eclectic cats.

As far as now there are no rapping features on the LP, but Cee-Lo Green of Gnarls Barkley is singing the hook on one track. Another song about Brooklyn features Santi White aka Santogold, an up and coming artist out of New York. Kanye sampled one of her songs and Jay then brought her in to redo the vocals. While other producers have been trying to get their work on the album the sound that Kanye is bringing is so different from what he has been doing that its damn near impossible to get anyone who is matching the same sound without them hearing what he has been doing.

I think from the news that I got is that he is gonna change the game again with the sound of this album, and while that has been said before remember Jay has already done this at least twice, once with the bling sound of the Neptunes and again with the original Blueprint.

The “Swagger Like Us” sequel has been CONFIRMED. Verses from Jeezy, Nas, and Andre 3000 have already been recorded. However, 50’s efforts were excluded from the track because, well, he was never asked. I guess Fif’s swagger just wasn’t good enough, lol!

I like D.O.A. It's not so great lyrically, but nice No I.D sampling, as usual. It's a bit weird for a 40 year old dude to care so much...not sure whether it's just a Flex-pleasing excuse for a minor headline, or something more substantial.

http://soulbounce.com/soul/2009/06/jay-z_death_of_autotune.php

He isn't saying anything new. Initially I was all ready to jump on board with Jay-Z and his wacky "Death Of Auto-Tune" idea, but after actually hearing the track, in which he bemoans not only the use of "T-Paining it" but tight jeans and bright colors on a track co-produced by Kanye West, I can't help but wonder if this approach isn't just little passive-aggressive. Here you have a man that has no doubt benefited financially from many of his friends going the Auto-Tune route, and he opts to "kill" it on a song instead of just, I dunno, not using it or even referring to it at all.

This is a gimmick. Just like "Hip Hop is Dead." People have been over Auto-Tune for a while now, but I suppose if Jay-Z gets other rap artists to stop using it, he can just sit back and take credit for starting a movement or saving Hip-Hop or whatever. I beseech anyone reading this not to fall for that shit.

My opinion on what i've heard so far: At least it's conceivable U2 could have a big hat club.

thing about still following bands with fading talent is that it's usually only evident in one place - jay-z is a mediocre rapper who feels the need to constantly apologize for that fact with his "i'm old, been there done that" lyrics. i don't like being hit over the head repeatedly with the fact that he is old

this is pretty bad. "off that" is growing on me a lot, though - even tho i still dislike the sentiment, it's got some nice lines and i'm basically of the opinion at this point that the faster jay raps the better the song's gonna be

srsly, Forever Young pushes this album firmly into the gahbage pit. that track name, that guest star, that interpolation, that complete and pathetic lack of self-awareness. it's like him giving the final speech at the funeral of his rapping career. :(

methanietanner, Tuesday, 1 September 2009 02:01 (sixteen years ago)

the "interpretation" or whatever is awful but it's probably my second favorite track on the album just because i like the original song

^^ srs question, what song do you think Kanye was referring to when he said he did "probably one of the best hip-hop beats of all time" for this album -- i swear to god out of the 8 beats he did on BP3 "Run This Town" might actually be the closest thing to a realistic candidate

Even "Run This Town" is a bit neutered - kinda pop rap like T.I. (whom I like btw), but it would have been a lesser song on The Blueprint.
