Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:46 (seventeen years ago)

So they weren't actually called Peter, Paul and Mary?

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:47 (seventeen years ago)

Ohio Players

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Average White Band

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

Sadly I can name members of all of these bands

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:50 (seventeen years ago)

Even Chicago?

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Peter Cetera

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Oh. I'm sorry.

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)

Green Day
Offspring

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:52 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, sadly I can name some members of nearly all of these from memory, and in some cases I can name all of them. I hate my stupid brain.

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:54 (seventeen years ago)

WASP

someone should watch Decline and Fall of Civilizatoin Part II: The Metal Years

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

Like, why should I be able to name multiple members of Deep Purple, Chicago or Toto? Why don't I instead know, like, the quadratic formula?

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 15:55 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I only know the name of one of them

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

OK, I can't name anyone in OMD. But I can name two members of BOC.

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

I can name all the members of both!

Tom D., Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

I'm mostly listing old groups because they have a legendary enough status that people should theoretically know names of the band members even if they don't care about their music. I wouldn't expect the same with new groups, I mean who besides their fans could actually name the members of Linkin' Park or A*Teens?

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

Procol Harum

Famously, Gary Brooker and Matthew Fisher.

Lovin' Spoonful

Zalman Yanowski!

OMD Andy McCluskey!

Tuomas, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:08 (seventeen years ago)

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Thursday, 21 August 2008 16:14 (seventeen years ago)

Chicago had Terry Kath. Awesome dude.

Around 5 p.m., late afternoon of January 23, 1978, after a party at roadie Don Johnson's home in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles, California, Kath — being a gun enthusiast — took a .38 revolver and put it to his head, pulling the trigger several times on the empty chambers. Picking up a semiautomatic 9mm pistol, Kath put the gun to his temple and pulled the trigger, infamously saying, "Don't worry, it's not loaded." (After showing the empty magazine to his friend.) However, one bullet remained in the chamber, killing him instantly — a week shy of his 32nd birthday.

OMD = Andy McCluskey and Paul Humphries.
TVOTR has a singer named Tunde, a beard named Kyp and a ScarJo producer named Dave Sitek.

Could not name anybody in REO Speedwagon, Kansas or Amon Duul I.

Styx? Herman's Hermits? This Heat? Candlebox? Drive Like Jehu? Midnight Oil?

Owen Pallett, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)

Slade - Noddy Holder! Always struck me as a fantabulous name.
Spooky Tooth - Mick Jones. No, not that one, the other one. The one who was in Foreigner.
pre-"Skunk" Baxter & Michael McDonald Doobies: Patrick Simmons and that other guy, the lead singer . . . Tom Johnson? Johnston?
REO Speedwagon - Kevin Cronin, Gary Richrath, Alan Somethingorother . . . I think there's a Bruce in there too.
Kansas - Kerry Livgren

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

All former born-again Christians of a certain age know Kerry Livgren because he went on to form A.D. The same reason we know Mark Farner of Grand Funk, because he went all Jesus-y.

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:57 (seventeen years ago)

Styx - Tommy Shaw, Dennis DeYoung
Herman's Hermits - Peter Noone!
Midnight Oil - Peter Garrett
Candlebox - beats the hell outta me

henry s, Thursday, 21 August 2008 17:59 (seventeen years ago)

Also James "JY" Young and the Panozzo brothers, Fhuck and John. (John is deceased, Chuck is HIV+.)

Yes, I spent a lot of time reading my sister's "Paradise Theater" record jacket as a kid.

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

Jesus christmas, did I just type "Fhuck?"

Pancakes Hackman, Thursday, 21 August 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

I think I know no members of most bands.

contenderizer, Thursday, 21 August 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

Midnight Oil?

Peter Garrett, Jim Moginie, Martin Rotsey, Rob Hirst, Andrew James (bass 1978-1981), Peter Gifford (bass 1982-1988), Bones Hillman (bass 1989-whenever they broke up)

But I used to be a ridiculously huge fan of these guys.

On tour last week, I asked all 3 of my band mates to name the members of Metallica. They could only come up with Lars.

I wanted to fire them all on the spot.

Pet Shop Boys = Neil Tennant
Live = Ed Kowalczyk

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 21 August 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

"Todd" was the singer in Toad the Wet Sprocket. Todd Phillips, maybe?

Two of the guys in Live are named "Chad," and I only know this because of a hilariously biting review that appeared, I think, in SPIN.

Gin Blossoms also have a Robin, I think.

This thread would be a lot more interesting if we named famous bands we actually LIKE (and even own recordings by) yet can't name any of 'em. Like, say, the Chemical Brothers. (Oh wait, one of 'em's named Simon, isn't he?)

(Has this been suggested already? Sorry, didn't see it.)

(I guess Weiland and Zach are the mega-famous ones there, but for some reason it seems weird to me that one would have much awareness of Sleater-Kinney without knowing at least one of the three names, given that they're so often talked about as individuals, and not just some faceless unit.)

ian, Friday, 22 August 2008 04:07 (seventeen years ago)

Big & Rich are their real names, near enough.

Chi-Lites and the Four Tops - Levi Stubbs!
Avalanches - Darren Seltmann, Robbie Chater, Tony DiBlasio, Gordon McQuilten, Dexter Fabay, James DeLaCruz. First three are still in the band. There was the Japanese MC before they had records out, and the old bloke who played percussion when they toured the album too, Peter "Snakey" something.
Stone Roses - Ian Brown, John Squire, Gary "Mani" Mounfield, John? "Reni" Wren?
Pet Shop Boys - Chris Lowe not named yet. Sylvia Mason-James probably just about counts as a member for touring purposes.
Chemical Brothers - Ed Simon (not Simon something) and Tom Rowlands
the roots - Black Thought, Scott Storch, Rahzel and a bunch of dudes who are still in the band.
rage against the machine - Tim Commerford, Brad Wilk, the The Nightwatchman bloke. Tom Morello!
Village People - the Indian's name was Felipe.
Iron Maiden - Bruce Dickinson, Nicko McBrain, and some dudes who haven't written bad Tom Sharpe knockoffs or been hit in the face with a pan. Possibly a Steve Harris? And Eddie.

Once you know the name Sugarfoot Bonner, it's a hard one to forget in the Ohio Players. P-Funk alumni Junie Morrison was also in the Ohio Players in the early days too.

It took me a minute to remember Jani Lane.

I wanted to say Dani Filth first but I knew that had to be wrong.

I just meant it's likely he's encountered the "Well, yeah" ilx-meme a few times on various threads, whether or not he knows they're former Eagles

Just remembered that Mike Reno is the lead singer of Loverboy, so that doesn't count.

I did realize today that I couldn't name a single member of the band Slayer, but I think I'm in the minority on that.

I sometimes introduced myself as Mike Reno when I worked in call centres. (I'd try to use a different name each call some nights. You take your kicks where you can with that job.) No one ever questioned that one. My supervisor in Montreal and I had kind of a post-xhuxk fascination with Loverboy.

Pretty sure I couldn't name anyone in Harlequin

I'll be sad if Tuomas doesn't know of Don 'n Glenn by now

I watched the Netflix documentary on Eagles a while ago, so yeah, I know those names now.

Thomson and Thompson, duh!

And yeah, I'd come across the name "Don Henley" on ILM before, I even recognized his hit tune when it played in the documentary, I just didn't know he used to be in the Eagles. The doc also taught me that catchy "Heat is On" tune from my childhood was also by a former Eagle.
