If Ciara had been it would you still have voted her ahead of Madge or is Ciara just your favourite current/new pop star? (I know you like pop to be current but surely you wouldn't pick Ciara against the likes of Madonna or Michael jackson as best pop star ever?)

and that's like, three times over at the very least: jackson 5 period as teenage wunderkind just slaying everyone with rockin robin, off the wall period as sexiest andogynous popstar ever with the best grooves and moves, and thriller to bad era as world-beating colossus weirdo in red.

john q deeznutz (Frogman Henry), Tuesday, 16 September 2008 05:33 (seventeen years ago)

I went with Elton John on grounds of endurance, catalogue, visuals, and unlikeliness, but in hindsight an equal or better case could have been made for Madonna on all four counts.

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 05:40 (seventeen years ago)

As for non-musical qualities, it would have to be either Michael Jackson for being so fantastically OTT no one comes near, or Madonna who has actually done more for the female gender than hardly anyone else by being very explicit but at the same time always very much in control.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 08:14 (seventeen years ago)

And, I mean, both have made there share of excellent music too.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 16 September 2008 08:15 (seventeen years ago)

Went for Bowie. He's the most enduring, entertaining and multi-faceted and has had the most consistent career on average out of all of them. I mean, I like Elvis and Prince and the Beatles all equally, but Bowie has always been a presence and generally well respected other than maybe during the late-80s/early 90s.

"Who of todays pop stars will be best remembered 20 years from now?"

Do you always live in the future? How does it feel like?

"For me, the best musicians will always be the biggest stars. Music should be about music in itself and nothing but music and strictly music. Everything else is uninteresting and irrelevant."

If you knew anything about pop, you'd realize that musicianship is largely irrelevant. Pop is not only about the content, but largely about the package. (Cue pervy joke about George Michael's package. hur hur)

That said, my pick would probably be Sinatra, Presley, Madonna or Prince. These may have had great content, but it was the package which won me over.

Of course they are household names.

state of the world today, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 10:30 (seventeen years ago)

Ice Cube and Ice T are _not_ household names. You do understand what the term "household name" means, right? It doesn't mean "familiar to people who have a decent knowledge of certain cultural fields". It means "known to absolutely everyone in the country". Pretty sure your gran couldn't reel off the Amerikkka's Most Wanted tracklisting.

Carrie Bradshaw Layfield (The stickman from the hilarious 'xkcd' comics), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 10:33 (seventeen years ago)

Paul McCartney is the best musician ever, which is more important for me than being a "star".

Musicianship aside, who do you think is the best "pop star", Geir?

state of the world today, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

I think I have written that a bit upthread. For me it's between Michael Jackson and Madonna. Speaking of image and cultural meaning alone and not at all music. I also guess Elvis was more important as an "icon" than as an actual musician.

Whenever music and image is combined as a criteria, I will always pick from music alone.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 21:44 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think anyone could argue if Michael Jackson, Madonna or Elvis win. But Elvis probably wont get as near as many votes as the other 2.
Was he the first pop star?

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 17 September 2008 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

Only if being a pop star has to involve pop music, and even then, you could argue that what Al Jolson used to sing was pop music too.

Geir Hongro, Wednesday, 17 September 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

Ah here we go.

Well according to the billboard chart and perusing Geir definition of 'pop' music George Strait is actually the best pop star ever with 54 #1 hits. Followed by Conway Twitty's long-held record of 50 # 1's.

Fail to this thread yadda yadda.

Ice Cube and Ice-T (and Nas) don't belong on this list. You can't become a pop star after the fact. I want to vote Timberlake, but he's not included, so I'll either cast a vote for Bowie/Prince or Ice-T (PROTEST)

Was Kate Bush a pop star?

Tape Store, Saturday, 20 September 2008 00:12 (seventeen years ago)

i think it's lame to vote for someone you didn't "experience" as a pop star. prince has been a rubbish pop star for as long as i've been aware of him (about two decades).

Yeah, man, cause we all sure did love Frankie's duet with Bono, that's no lie!!

Perry-Como-Zombie-Memorial-Radio-Now! (Ioannis), Saturday, 20 September 2008 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

Its odd that the thread getts bogged down in debating the pop bit of 'best pop star' as we wonder about including Al Jolsen and the the 'star' bit as we wonder about Tom's grannie checking out Nas.

But I got most stumped with how to define 'best' - its not just the best selling or the most popular but the one that seemed to do 'being a pop star' the best, and that seems to be about the gateway thing - as a teenager in particular looking for my own world to explore then Bowie was the one to follow.

I thought there would have been more written WHY Madonna or Michael Jackson is the greatest ever pop star in peoples opinions (assuming they will run away with this poll)

I hate this thread, and if I forced myself to vote I would go with Elvis. But I'm not going to vote

A case could be made for David Beckham.

He's no Gazza.

Better pick Best then.

Madonna lagging behind Prince & Bowie in 4th place shock.

man fuck Michael Jackson

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 29 September 2008 23:43 (seventeen years ago)

The most surprising thing here is the rather poor showing of Madonna. I mean, it isn't like 4th best and 12 votes is exactly a bad performance, but I kind of would have expected her up there together with Michael Jackson. Culturally, she has had an enormous impact.

Geir Hongro, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 00:55 (seventeen years ago)

It says 'best' though.

Maybe people voted elsewhere thinking everyone else would vote madonna.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 30 September 2008 12:41 (seventeen years ago)

No she always does poor in polls with male-dominated rock critics. Even Janet Jackson has done better than her in say P & J She has historically done the worst of any pop star of her stature, and even any critical goodwill afforded her after her first decade has come with enormous caveats. (She doesnt make things easy by remaining around).

Vichitravirya_XI, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 13:58 (seventeen years ago)

I think it's cool that Britney did just as well as Mick Jagger and Paul McCartney

Vichitravirya_XI, Tuesday, 30 September 2008 14:00 (seventeen years ago)

I don't see any poor showing of Madonna! 4th aint bad!
