Favourite remix is hard. PROBABLY their remix of Low Motion Disco's "Love Love Love" which has one of the most amazing climaxes ever. When the enormous warped piano refrain comes in it's just insane, probably the best thing of its type since Maurice Fulton's remix of ALice Smith's "Love Endeavour" (and that had Smith's astonishing vocals to help it across the line).

But yeah Aeroplane are amazingly on point at the moment - Shortwave Set! Grace Jones! Friendly Fires!

I stand by my "they're to balearic/nu-disco as Thin White Duke was to electro-house claim.

Also their DJ shows are excellent.

my fave remix is the shortwave set one because the first twenty seconds are kind of like huh, okay then it opens up and its kind of simple and certain and eazy and you can sing along, while you dance, if you want to. also its the best one to hear out.

What I love about them as original producers - the sense that on every single occasion they're consciously trying to make the most enjoyable record imaginable. And their ability to mix pop-disco and e-transcendence and that sense of wide-eyed wonder without ever really coming over as twee or cloying or annoying. Whispers is my favourite single of this year by several light years.

What I love about them as remixers - they do what JLC *used* to do, which is to really understand the point of a song and just rearrange it to make it MORE so. The Grace Jones one is a case in point. The only side alley is the Friendly Fires one which takes the song in a different direction (mostly by replacing the vocal) but still somehow manages to keep the evocative feel of the original. The Cut Copy one is possibly the only one that doesn't quite work as well possibly because the original is going for a very similar vibe.

i think these guys are great, but i find it very difficult to articulate why. it's too easy to lob "80s" in their direction or like, happy-sad disco-pop. "aeroplane"/"caramellas" is a must if you have not heard it. their second single is "pacific air race", which is not as good, but still worth checking. and "whispers" (the third single) is great, but i like the h&la rmx the best. out of the remixes i think i would list my favorites as: cobra dukes, grace jones, shortwave set, low motion disco, lullabies in the dark, allez allez. i would love to hear an aeroplane rmx of h&la or of "west end girls" where they just looped the intro synths for 10 minutes.

producers of the year by a country mile, although dj international mag picking 'caramellas' as tune-of-the-year was a bit o_O. unlike tricky my favourite of their own tracks is 'pacific air race'. the key change has me welling up. favourite remixes are 1. low motion disco, 2. coyote and 3. grace jones. can't get into 'whispers' as much as everyone seems to have, just ain't feeling the vocal. and i have tried. the friendly fires remix is good but the justus kohncke one kills all.

They are great, although mostly in the "yes it's really cool to hear ten Aeroplane productions in a DJ mix with everyone cheering each time" sense. But they choose appropriate stuff to go with it - when I saw them they dropped Tensnake remixing Sally Shapiro, Mungolian Jet Set remixing They Came From The Stars, I Saw Them etc. It was like the last outpost of maximal melodic dance. A very large, all-enveloping sound.

Best bit (and I'm repeating myself from the balearic thread but whatevs) was when one of them started to mix in Robin S's "Show Me Love", didn't get much of a reaction of recognition from the crowd as the bassline dropped (myself excluded), and looked at the crowd with confusion, consternation and something close to disgust.

I think this is an excellent description of what they do. In many ways they're closer to a Ewan Pearson than a JLC, except that the JLC comparison works because with both Aeroplane 2008 and JLC 2005 there's this sense of expecting to get over the largesse of his emotionalism by the time the next remix comes around, only to be helplessly overcome once again. It seems unbelievable that Producers/Remixers could walk that tightrope of wonder/tweeness so long and so successfully.

I'm only just now listening to Pacific Air Race for the first time. It rules, far more tracky and dancefloor-orientated than a lot of their other material, reminds me a bit of that Lullabies In The Dark record with the number that I can't be bothered to Google.

It strikes me that they're going under the radar a bit despite having remixed everything that wasn't nailed down over the last year or so. If they can keep up this workrate next year there's a lot to look forward to. And an album as well, right?

The lack of love for the Pacific Air Race 12" has me a little down. "Above the Clouds" is the peak of their original material thus far.

RBMA Radio just added a new Aeroplane Mix and it is goooood.

i think the reason that i didn't rate "pacific air race" as high as the first single is because i just have not listened to it as much. i bought the vinyl on release and then it kind of went into the pile. i'll give it another try. i remember really like the cover art.

I made a compilation of their best stuff for a friend over the weekend and it really is the best thing ever. I don't think I quite appreciated just how good they are at producing shiver-down-spine moments - it's like they've got it down to an exact science.

Yeah, they make it seem almost too easy. Their music.... wells up more effortlessly than just about anything.

Like, the breakdown bit at the three-four minute mark in the Low Motion Disco is almost offensively smug in its own largesse, "bet you can't do this, eh!"

ya, i think my least favorite part of the remix is the refrain where the original dude sings "they'll be out for us" in that indie-anthem-fuxxor voice. the original wasn't as bad as i expected from that one line (i quite like the cowbells!), but it still sounds like a third string dfa act.

Re the Flying Mix:

a) Isn't Tensnake's "Tavira" totally amazing?

b) The Aeroplane remix of Lindstrom & Solale is such an amazingly compulsive track, that guitar is insane. The sudden organ vamps remind me of Fela Kuti for some reason. Although it does make me think that if Aeroplane blow up it will kinda mean that Reverso 68 wuz robbed.

I love this Tellier mix (thanks for the link gr8080) - but... is it wrong of me to be reminded slightly of "Dance Wiv Me"?

My brother has been trying to get me to listen to Aeroplane for a few months and he sent me the Tellier mix. Z thought it kinda sucked to be honest, it sounds like something Reverso 68 might have done in 2003. Plus I love the original Tellier and they lose something in the streamlining of its very carefully placed rhythmic orgasms/pauses!

Pretty much all of their recent remixes have been one-offs: The Shortwave Set remix was string-riff assisted house, Grace Jones was dark Moroder/Cowley epicry, Lindstrom/Solale is more of a Glimmers style live disco-rock affair (though much better than that makes it sound) etc. etc.

I agree that italo-reviving electro-house isn't the most exciting of shifts at this stage.

i listened to the tellier mix twice on an actual aeroplane and let me be the first to tell you this is the real deal folks

tellier remix isn't their best but it's still nice. and i think an important difference they have with reverso 68 is that aeroplane are huuuge suckers for a cheesy pop hook. they use some very similar sounds but i've always thought that unabashed love of pop is what made aeroplane so fun/endearing.

Ha, you never heard the Reverso 68 Remix of Bent's "Coming Back", which I suspect is what Ronan is thinking of above.

I have the Flying Mix - I'd never seen a tracklisting though so didn't know the Lindstrom mix was on there. Will give it another listen.

It's the one about two thirds of the way through with the scratchy guitar and awesome organ vamps.

They were great at Cargo last night - it was a bit Now That's What I Call Nu-Balearic, started with their remix of Friendly Fires and also played the Shortwave Set and Sebastien Tellier mixes.

How was the crowd/atmosphere? I couldn't go in the end, but went to see Runaway there last Friday, and I couldn't really get with it. People didn't seem to be that into or even there for the music, and there seemed to be broken glass underfoot everywhere (v bad for dancing; I prefer talcum powder). Maybe free nights not so good?

Difficult to tell really because we had a massive group of us out and spent something like eight hours in there. Bit of an after-work drinks vibe maybe, people seemed to roll in early evening and then just not leave, venturing out to dance/watch bands later. We turned up more or less straight from work and had dinner and drinks in the bar bit first, mostly to avoid any queues later.

Atmosphere on the dancefloor was great though, although their music is so accessible and poppy that it couldn't really not be. That might again be skewed by the size of the group we had.

going out with 6-8 ppl is really the best way to do it imo

The Friendly Fires remix is real cool, sure, but that God Only Knows thing is bloody awful. The semiotics side of my brain says this remix is exploitive of the listener's nostalgia, like having Tom Cruise appear in Tropic Thunder---->not funny. The corny music-school side of my brain hates the fact that the remix gets the chords wrong.

Yeah it was the "warm-up" thing that riled me a bit - you've said that three or four times now about Balearic/disco stuff and I don't get it. Sort of... judging fairly unabashed pop-disco by the standards of techno, or something? It brings out the same sort of reaction in me as when people turned up on minimal threads back in the day to go "why isn't this banging like Green Velvet or Pendulum?"

I'm not judging it by the standards of techno, I just think it sounds like something that was done already, I can't see what new things this brings to the table esp as a really big populist sound. It reminds me of electrohouse in 2004/2005, in places, but whatever's been added (not sure, pop?) and whatever's been taken away (house/techno/trance/nubeat) it's just not my own thing, and I really have tried.

I mean Aeroplane actually kind of remind me of Mylo more than anyone, in that the stuff is not particularly well produced but is full of pop hooks. I'm not anti-pop either, just this stuff makes me mainly feel disappointed with where electroclash/electrohouse went.

I also feel italo has been way overmined and I'm bored of it by now. Maybe others feel this way about house but so be it.

Plus I still think, and I've said this before, that there are disco clubs in London where you go there and the revival of the same ultra poppy sounds has been going on so long it feels like what a bad bar must have been like back in the day.

but I am still mystified as to how popular Aeroplane are and hence my kvetching above...like WHY NOW? is populist dance music really just as lacking in new movements as the closest underground variations?

Some of it reminds me of the Ratface Dreamangel "Fired Down" stuff... that is, early 90s dance 45s played at 33 rpm.

i had stayed off this thread as 1) i didn't want to rain on the parade and 2) their manager is a very good friend of mine so i feel i should be supportive, but ronan just nailed exactly how i feel about them in his mylo referencing post. i had started to think i was the only one as everyone i know seems to be aeroplane mad at the moment. i love their grace jones remix but most of the rest has this horrible digital sheen that hurts my ears. their production actually makes me feel kind of nauseous.

I dunno, it feels to me like this is exactly the right time for something like Aeroplane to appear, because it's been a really lean few years for maximalist melodic dance music. I've been saying for a while that it's good to have something again that feels big without being lairy, maybe that quality was what was lost around 2005 when electrohouse faded and noisy Erolclash took over (or minimal, if you're looking the other way, but I'm trying to keep minimal out of this debate).

The Tellier remix was the first one when I thought Aeroplane were drifting too close to electrohouse - if anything I want dancefloor-friendly new Balearic to resemble 2002-era Take Me With You house. Aeroplane's best stuff does that, they have a real feel for a hook - speaking as someone who prefers the Das Pop/Cobra Dukes/Caramellas end of their sound to the Grace Jones/Tellier end.

is this aeroplane backlash about aeroplane specifically, or nu-balearica/cosmic disco whatnot generally? b/c it doesn't make sense to me if it's the former. i don't feel aeroplane's aesthetic is noticeably different to any other nu-balearic act, or even lindstrom in non-conceptual mode, it's just that they're slightly poppier and have more regular output. their position vis-a-vis that scene is a bit like jacques lu cont vis-a-vis electrohouse.

I think Aeroplane have less of a connection to house music than Mylo and pretty much no connection at all to techno. Even at their most up there's barely a decent kick drum in sight. Another reference point might be Rex the Dog who I think structured his tracks in a manner similar to how Aeroplane do now. Compare/contrast "Aeroplane" and "Prototype".

The tendency towards narrative development is what made circa 2004 such a great time for dance mixes of pop songs. Even if you leave Jacques Lu Cont out of the picture you could make such an amazing comp of this stuff:

i was listening to the "now til 69" remix last night and stirmonster's "horrible digital sheen" comment came to mind. it really was kind of nauseating! it was an mp3, but even on top of that it sounded weirdly compressed and despite listening to the song about 20 times or so in the past i had never noticed the production (probably because i was paying attention to everything else or nothing at all cuz it's so anthemic). the drums have this kind of rushy ableton feel to them.

Ha that sounds right actually. The Shortwave Set remix is either astonishing or vaguely repellent depending on one's mood.

Feel the same way about the Shortwave Set mix actually! But they're worth seeing live (and are not syntheticky throughout - speaking of which they really need to get out that Lindstrom & Solale remix to prove they can work in materials other than plastic and polyester).

shall look out for that mixmag disc; the various sets of theirs that i've heard have been pretty tight. they also avoid the trap of sounding too synthetic all the way through, as tim says - looks like i was having a go at them upthread but i'm more worried about those who'll play sets entirely composed of hi-gloss balearic revivalism, it'll be like dudes who jumped exclusively on the ed banger/kitsune jock, bleurgh.

I'm actually slightly disappointed with this mix as I think I already have two thirds of those tracks. This feels more like a mixtape than an actual mix as the transitions between tracks are usually quite sudden.

Definitely worth buying - I mean, Mixmag is only £4 or something and it's nice to have some of these tunes in CD quality rather than MP3 (Although I've no idea what 'quality' these cover CDs are compared to say a commercial release. For all I know Aeroplane may have sent Mixmag an MP3 of the mix in the first place)

fyi SF heads, Mixmag w/ Disco Balearica mix in stock at Amoeba right now!

i saw them at medusa in l.a. on wednesday! it was really fun, but i was too drunk and i'm not obsessive enough to comment on track selection, though i'm pretty familiar with all of their stuff and their mixes. big cheers for 'paris,' obviously. played the sebastian tellier remix, too. it was just one half of aeroplane, the smaller of the two of them and he seemed quite accomplished with transitions and whatnot. apparently they are also playing at anthem magazine's pool party tomorrow, adjacent to coachella, which i just so happened to get lucky enough to snag wristbands for.

If this means that they're concentrating on finishing the album and getting it out asap then I hope the Americans will consider this taking one for the team.

any news on the album?

one thing that has really been bothering me is how laptoppy a lot of their stuff sounds. Like I kindof expect something a bit more lush and analogue from my balearo-disco edits, like, texturally these really bother me, they should be more decadent or something. On the other hand, the way they stretch the dynamics of these things and pack them with mad catchy new bits is pretty great imo. So I am of two minds. Luckily Aeroplane and Todd Terje both exist.

They do have a kind of plasticky glittering surfaces feel, but I think this is a big part of their appeal. I don't think of Aeroplane's stuff as "balearo-disco edits", but more as, I dunno, a dance music equiv. of stuff like "Bizarre Love Triangle".

What they're definitely not doing is fetishising the organic sound of pre "dance music" dance music. Todd Terje does, and marvelously, but these are two very different approaches.

IKR, your complaints about Aeroplane are how i feel about that solo Lindstrom album. the whole thing sounds like it was made with 1 piece of software, v limited texturally.

i like Aeroplane's plasticky quality in small doses but i dunno how much fun a whole album of it would be.

Got a bad feeling this album is going to be delayed and delayed and come out 12 months after their moment has passed.

yeah the aeroplane remix - if i was dancing to this the organs would make me want to do so many diff things- it's like they are trying to make you break your body

I think i've said it before but the interrelationship of all the different instruments reminds me a lot of Fela Kuti. But yeah, there's a sense of "You thought you knew what you were dancing to, now suffer the consequences of our unexpected second attack!"

yeah which is weird for them because their songs/remixes always have such a deliberate intent wrt to build - it's pretty jarring and that's def a part of why it's great (besides just sounding awesome)

Jordan have you heard the Allez Allez remix? That's the one when they really go for broke with the build, to the point of throwing on these ridiculous piano chords at the end. It's pretty much the exact same trick as on the MGMT mix only better cos it's faster.

Listened to their remix of Sebastien Tellier for the first time and the OMG HOLY SHIT moment came when just before the 4th minute that whirling synth (?) hits.

Discovered Tensnake's "Tavira" from the Flying Mix and wow..

Yeah "Tavira" is gorgeous. Love the percussion.

That whirling synth isn't in the the original song but it's originally from Supernature. It's one of those remix/production tricks that seemingly always works though - Lindstrom wheeled it out on his last album for the "I am going to be extra extra ostentatious right about... now" moment. It's pretty much the ultimate icing-on-cake disco flourish.

WRT to the discussion upthread about the electric sheen of this shit, i think this may have already been said but it's ultimately just pop dance. i mean in interviews that's how they've described it. their first release seemed to want to operate within the nubalearica whatever vein, but esp since they've been remixing all these pop people it seems to make sense. it's just the catchiest shit you've ever heard

oh okay, didn't know that. the title of the video is "recording with aeroplane" though so I'd still guess that au revoir simone are going to be on the album, but that's only a guess.

on the digital pop sheen - the only time I've noticed or that it's bothered me is with the "Now 'Til 69" remix, which is their worst by far imo. liked it the first few times, despise it now. otherwise i don't really get that criticism.

I know I'm way behind the curve on this one, but people kept playing that bloody Sebastian Tellier mix they did and every time it came on, my ears would prick up and go OOOOOOOHHHHH WHAT IS THAT MAKING THAT SOUND...

That synth sound at the beginning of the track - where it's all swhirly and phased out, and it kind of ... bubbles ... the echoes/delay on it makes a noise like waves breaking on pebbles and it is the most amazing sound I've ever heard.

I was kind of gutted when I heard the original song - it's nothing like.

Also, that rejected Grace Jones track is ... sublime. That's the only word for it. Shivers down my back every time I hear it. How can seven minutes feel like a heartbeat? It's just so swooshy and lush.

Now I am going to read the rest of the thread and see what else I've been missing.

This summer feels weird. I was trying to work out if my tastes had changed so much - or if fashion has just turned around, and suddenly all the things I'm attracted to in sound (phase, psychedelia, texture, layering, fuzziness) are suddenly back "in" like someone waved a magic wand and turned everything swhirly.

Tavira is his best work in my book.

tensnake's new one- in the end (i want to cry)- is fuckin great if you ask me. also every track on the 'keep believin' ep is way solid, esp "tavira"

and "congolal" is a one of my all-time favorite nu-balearic tunes

"Tavira" is pretty astonishing; it's also a track that seems purpose-built for use in Aeroplane sets.

I also loved Tensnake's "Around The House" from way back when, though that was in a different style to his current stuff.

yeah, i thought "around the house" was pretty nice but had none of that wide-eyed euphoria that's all over those two remixes. i'll be checking out those tracks yall mentioned.

I don't actually know what the difference is apart from 4 seconds longer. In fact, listening to them note for note next to one another... I think there's just slightly more step delay on the non-Italo one and the EQ is slightly different? I'm not even trusting my ears at this point. Maybe they're the same and it's entirely psychological that I view the non-Italo one as more "swhirly" and less "crisp"

i was driving the other day with nothing to listen to, threw in an old mix cd i made a year and a half ago, and their fool for love remix came on. i can't remember if it's gotten much hype on here, but it's so great. much more in style with what they were coming out with originally

fever ray is the one which is other way round - love the og but kinda don't want to hear another rex the dog remix in 2009 - you just know it's gonna be so formulaic

aeroplane has always been remixers of mediocre or worse songs. see: "paris", "circuit", "now til 69", "fool for love". hell, almost all of the songs that got remixed by them are mediocre!

But that's the thing - they take mediocre, boring songs and make them AMAZING.

I don't think I'd want to hear them tackle a song that was already good.

Sort've meh on that new mix, seems a bit Aeroplane-by-the-numbers.

^^^ i was of this thinking for a while too but the kilometer mix has a way of wedging itself in your brain and making you submit to its charms

i dig the first couple of tunes a bunch, that lindstrom remix of doves is pretty epic. this mix isn't really too far from the mixmag one imo, maybe slightly less exciting because there are no actual aeroplane mixes on here but it's still pretty fun stuff

I like the mixmag one, it's a total populist thing and full of obvious choices, but then of course populism is one of Aeroplane's strenghts. Very hard to get sick of "Now Till 69", "Kilometer"...even "Paris", which has well and truly been played to death by now.

Just clicked in this thread to see what the heck the mega-building spacerock explosion song was at the end. This is pretty Epic, in like, the Beowulf sense of the word.

(And as an aside, I was completely disappointed when I heard the original Kilometre. It's awful.)

I think you'd be surprised. If we're going to be completely honest about it, a lot of the intersection comes from the bit labelled "Erol Alkan cosmic space glam disco with some beats on". And don't forget, Electronica is where a lot of the dronerock/shoegaze kids wibbled off to after the whole nu-gaze thing went tits up. (James Holden after all has more in common with the original shoegaze aesthetic than, say, Barney Rubble Motorcycle Club ever did.)

I need to know more about this Joakim : Nebula Laughter track. It's totally spacerock, especially the last few minutes, and I want some more of that to put next to my Silver Apples records.

'lifeless' isnt fair -- its a totally difft kind of song -- going for a louche slow eroticisms rather than a dance-y italo remix

yes, it's here. but I doubt it's not a sample because it sounds different. it's more like they borrowed the melody.

the supernature (esque?) synths are in the aeroplane remix, they come in halfway through or so.

i'm talking about the original sebastien tellier tune's synth melody, which may not be a sample from that art of noise song but is reallllllllly dang similar

I was really bored by the synths in the original. That was one of the things that made it so disappointing.

The sort of... frothy sound of the synths in the remix are pretty much one of the biggest reasons I love it so much. They sound almost like breaking waves, that combination of choppy wub, the heavy phase, and then that slight step delay on the ends of the phrases that sounds like musical ... spray. I think that one synth sound is my favourite synth sound of the whole summer.

Unless the Black Meteoric Star album comes up from behind and usurps is, which it might well do.

i appreciate all synths mentioned here without prejudice, don't really understand all this hate towards the original tbh. it's easily my favorite song on the record, those synths add so much to the sleaze- and are still all over the aeroplane remix

But I fully admit, that could be because I was so turned off by the video. I have not heard the song in the context of the album.

OK, I'm listening to it now without the picture.

1) it's quite slower than the Aeroplane remix
2) no WUB or step delay on that synth sound - without which it just sounds kinda cheesy. It's the frothy delay that really makes that synth sound for me - the original is too stabby and dull.
3) the lyrics are much clearer on the original, and you can hear what he's actually saying - on the remix, they're smeared out by the delay so it sounds like he's singing "right under the tongue" (I thought it was a coded reference to cunilingus, ha ha)

it sounds like 'right over the top' & the lyrics always kinda implied cross-dressing

but i dont think thats what he intended

also yeah those synths are not cheesy theyre dope

the remix of kilometer sucks....way to remove the space from a great record

also just watching the video...sebastian tellier is basically the greatest human being of all time

their set at creamfields yesterday was fantastic, real controlled and gradually swelling til it exploded for the last 30 minutes. great re-edit of 'girls & boys'. nice pastel shirts.

their first release came out in 2007, they seem about mid-late 30s so what music stuff were they doing before then? their tracks are so perfect surely they must have been involved in making music in some form for years beforehand?

Not sure whether they'd be your thing really but the album is very enjoyable. That said I haven't heard the Horse Meat Disco remix so not sure whether it's remotely representative.

I got the single off iTunes, it's fun silly party music, like I said, reminded me of Horton's mob, in a good way. The Horse Meat Disco version isn't really *that* different, it's just got some nice chattering nanorobot noises but I don't really fancy wrestling with beatport to go look for it.

I'm willing to bet a sizeable amount that the Optimo mix will be the best of those three.

Not sure about the Au Revoir Simone remix, it feels a bit rushed, both in that it sounds a bit cobbled together and also that it could do with being about three minutes longer.
