i dunno, there's a difference between a "d'oh we were gonna wait 2 more weeks to drop this single but since it's out there..." leak, and a "this song is unfinished and features a scratch vocal by a different artist, noone was meant to hear this" leak.
and Interscope can't possibly control every track that gets leaked by their artists.

But the 45 degree tilt toward earth is what made the 1st pic famous.
― President Keyes, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:09 (sixteen years ago)
i dunno, im thinking that since the kanye single got leaked so early and got people excited partly cos it was so rough and demo sounding, this might be the new trend - leaking tracks that are still really scrappy. everyone liked hearing the biggie demos of lil kim tracks - this is just getting in there early.
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:28 (sixteen years ago)
(not that this is a particularly good song either way - i doubt even dre rhyming where eminems left his guide tracks can make it much better)
― titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:29 (sixteen years ago)
that's a totally different situation, though. Kanye posted "Love Lockdown" to his blog, not calling it a 'demo' or anything, and after everyone said the vocals sucked compared to the live performance he caved and re-recorded it. even if artists want to post works in progress, they're probably going to be very touchy about how and when that stuff gets out to the public.

Is "Crack a Bottle" seriously being discussed as a first single? Really? (in Seth & Amy voice) Like, for real? Because it's not that special. It's like something to tack on to a deluxe, six-months later edition of Relapse, right? The beat's the best thing about it - the featured performers are all kinda sleepwalking through it. It's like that "Swagger Like Us" track from the T.I. album, only not quite as good, and that track wasn't awesomesauce to begin with.

A lot of big projects like this have one or two big trumpeted leak songs that get called the "first single" until an actual proper first single comes out...sometimes because the first leak flops, sometimes it's just planned as a b-side/'street single' all along. I think they just rushed out "Crack A Bottle" because that demo w/ scratch vocals leaked but they're not gonna shoot a video or anything.

He's just a cop-out artist. Nothing too subversive was ever done without a "Nah, I'm just playin', Dawg," following. For awhile it was a formula: First single - raunchy, jocular, radio-friendly single (with at least one "OH SNAP!" joke at somebody's expense) under the Slim Shadey persona Second single: Eminem's "dark subject matter" about abuse and alienation Zzzzzzzzzz Third Single: I forget what came here...Stan was the third single once, right? That was actually very memorable.

without disagreeing with any of the above (lame popcult namechecks, lazy bounce beat, stupid "funny" voice) ... i don't hate it. and i don't think it's worse than (or as bad as) "just lose it," not to mention (the appalling) "crack a bottle." there's not much to the chorus, but it's catchy enough. and i kind of like his cadence against the beat. faint praise, ok, and it doesn't make me excited for the album. but i've kind of given up expecting em to be interesting, so him being not-terrible is a small plus.

Haha man that shit is fucked. It's kind of amazing how the guy's been in such a holding pattern that all you gotta do is change a few adjectives/names and the things people are saying about "We Made You" are identical to what people were saying about "Just Lose It" almost 5 years ago. It honestly makes me curious if Interscope won't greenlight his album until he has a song like this or if he just feels a pathological need to launch every album with one no matter how half-assed and shitty it is. If any rapper ever had the cultural currency to not try for the pop radio single and still sell it'd be him, but he just never bothers. And I mean the beat, the voice, they're so deliberately annoying! What a weird guy.

when 'just lose it' came out, i genuinely thought eminem was trying to torpedo his own career b/c he didn't feel like being a celebrity or whatever any more. don't really have any explanations for the same thing being used as a "comeback" though
― lex pretend, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)

I mean when you're not paying attention to it it lopes along reasonably, I kind of like the demented circus/Christmas production, but he's really kind of retracing well-worn territory here and everybody is right about the sense of taking one of the goofier "Encore" songs and swapping in some slightly less stale references.
The video is REALLY a detriment though - song is much more harmless without it. Same forced wackiness as "Just Lose It."

OK, so he's done (slightly) worse tracks, but this is his Big Comeback Single?? omg
― Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 03:10 (sixteen years ago)
The makes total perfect sense as Eminem's big comeback single.
― Kerm, Wednesday, 8 April 2009 03:23 (sixteen years ago)
i will say this: i like it a LOT more than "crack a bottle". but that doesn't really mean shit.
― andrei armpitshavin (some dude), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 03:35 (sixteen years ago)
Debating whether or not this is slightly better than polished turds like "Ass Like That" & "Crack a Bottle" has no bearing on fact that, compared to any of his numerous earlier career high points, this just fucking sucks. It's over. He's done. I was sort of hoping he'd have at least another Eminem Show-strength album left in him, and Dre being back on the roster seemed promising, but nope.
― Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Wednesday, 8 April 2009 03:42 (sixteen years ago)
Christ, this is his big comeback single and it's worse than "Fack"!
HOW THE FUCK COULD EMINEM POSSIBLY MAKE A WORSE SONG THAN "FACK"??

never has there been such finesse and nostalgia
the only line that remotely impresses me, and I loved "Just Lose It." References more than a decade old >>> References six months too old

^^^FAIL.
― The Reverend, Thursday, 16 April 2009 08:01 (sixteen years ago)
I hate to admit it, but it's sort of growing on me. It's a disorganized mess with no particular point besides serving up a batch of miscellaneous references, and it's not as good as "One Week" in doing that, and I wish he'd lay off the helium balloons but there's something perfect about the Dr. Seuss rhythm of lines like this:
Can he come backas nasty as he canYes he can, canDon’t ask me this again
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 16 April 2009 14:01 (sixteen years ago)
Basically, if you listen to the rhyming and not the words this is really enjoyable.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 16 April 2009 14:02 (sixteen years ago)
yeah in a fucked up way i enjoy this song. but i mean ive always hated "my name is" so the bar is pretty low for me as far as what i consider a good 'funny' eminem song.
― brewer and what (some dude), Thursday, 16 April 2009 14:05 (sixteen years ago)
That's what I meant by making sense. This fits right in with his other 'funny' cornball lead singles.
― Kerm, Thursday, 16 April 2009 14:30 (sixteen years ago)
I think my favourite delivery is "Jennifer's in… LOVE with me John Mayer, so sitonthebench!"
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 16 April 2009 16:05 (sixteen years ago)
"How does feel / is it fantastic, is it grand?" also pretty good.
― Doctor Casino, Thursday, 16 April 2009 16:16 (sixteen years ago)
is the finesse & nostalgia line a reference to something I am not getting?
― she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 16 April 2009 16:57 (sixteen years ago)
no it's just an overrated MC throwing together a couple of unrelated three-dollar words to prove he's got a vocabulary to dignify his fart jokes
― brewer and what (some dude), Thursday, 16 April 2009 17:02 (sixteen years ago)
this just popped in my head, and i'm not sure it's true but one time a dude who used to be part of the original rhymesayers crew said that a long time ago Slug from Atmosphere and Em battled, and that Em was really impressed and bit a lot of his whole confessional/emo shit from Slug back then...he said at the time Em was just straight up battle rapping and after he'd had that run in with slug and hear the early atmosphere stuff he started changing his style
― Lord Iffy Boatrace (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 16 April 2009 17:14 (sixteen years ago)
I think "finesse" and "nostalgia" are supposed to be at odds (what he's praised for vs. what his albums are full of), and that the self-awareness makes it funny.
― da croupier, Thursday, 16 April 2009 17:21 (sixteen years ago)
xpost yay another reason to dislike slug
― da croupier, Thursday, 16 April 2009 17:25 (sixteen years ago)
i dunno, i'm much more inclined to assume it's just his ham-fisted way of saying he'll make you nostalgic for a time when MCs had more finesse or something
― brewer and what (some dude), Thursday, 16 April 2009 17:31 (sixteen years ago)
either way dude needs to die on a toilet already
― da croupier, Thursday, 16 April 2009 17:36 (sixteen years ago)
the lyrics are pretty bad, but you've got to admit his flow is still incredible. the way he rides the heavily swung beat with a rigid, staccato flow is really nice
― rio (r1o natsume), Thursday, 16 April 2009 17:50 (sixteen years ago)
maybe not really nice, just nice
i'll cop to being interested in the actual content of the album

you can listen to it on myspace.
it's sort of jawdropping how far he's fallen.
this is the most joyless album i've ever heard.
plus all the "shocking" stuff just feels so limp, there's no real emotion with it, just going through the motions, feels all the uglier for it.
also, is it me or is dr. dre pretty much a shitty producer in 2009?
it's like remaking in da club or if i can't beats for the zillionth time....zzzzzzzzzz
― Brolotov Cocktail (n/h) (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 18:58 (sixteen years ago)

― homage is parody gone sour (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Tuesday, 19 May 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)
imo yes. it's way uglier, weird rape fantasy shit, plus all the poo-poo-pee-pee triumph the insult comic rapper faux leprachaun voice shit.
"deja vu" is like the only thing that reminds me that i used to like this dude. that song is pretty good, but it's like drug abuse is the only thing he has left to get confessional about anymore.
the mom song is pathetic it's like you're a grown fucking man, i think we are the same age, grow the fuck up already you tard.

"If any rapper ever had the cultural currency to not try for the pop radio single and still sell it'd be him, but he just never bothers."
werd, i was just thinking this. i mean, has nobody told him that NO ONE (prince, the beatles, ll cool j, anyone) keeps selling singles to teenagers forever? i mean at some point you gotta grow up with your fans if you want to still have anyone want to see your shows when your 40. it's weird, cause going by his lyrics/skill you gotta assume the guys got some smarts. does he really think this sort of crap is really gonna sell?
"It honestly makes me curious if Interscope won't greenlight his album until he has a song like this"
this would make a lot of sense.

I just realized I never heard The Eminem Show or Encore in their entirety. Might bother with the former today, for the "which is worse, poo or shit" debate. Definitely don't here a moment on Relapse as grating as the "AND NOW I'M THE TERMINATOR" thing on "Ass Like That," so I'll buy this is better thant Encore.

MT: One of the things that was interesting in your autobiography is when you're discussing the topic of guns and you wrote: "guns are bad." I'm wondering if you're happy to see hip hop and rap in general kind of moving away from the "gangsta" element.
EMINEM: Um, well, do you think it is moving away from that? I guess, in a sense, it does kinda feel like that, doesn't it?
MT: Yeah. And I think you're partially responsible for that because you brought a more humanistic sense to the form.

MT: That's the key. That's great. The new "We Made You" video is one of the most hilarious fucking things I've seen in a long time. The song itself is great — but the video made me laugh. It's almost like you're bringing about a rebirth of the music video. But I think there's deeper stuff there. You tell me if I'm reading too much into it — but in the past, Eminem, especially the Slim Shady character, was always painted as this villain in pop culture. And yet in this video, you're mocking all these current iconic "heroes" in modern culture. But it's like these lame idiots are the heroes and icons of today. And it's like, "Well, who are the real villains here?" Or am I reading too much into it?
wtf

I've always wanted people to be able to look back at each video and go, "Oh, remember what was going on at that moment!" You know what I mean? "Oh, that's when Jessica Simpson got fat." "Oh, OK!" And even if she gets thin again, that's fine. But for that moment in time, she was fat.

EMINEM: [laughs hard] That's funny, man!
MT: Thanks.

EMINEM: What I did was I bought a whole bunch of CDs, right? I bought like everything that was new. Everything that had just come out. And then I never got a chance to listen to it! So I've been taking like an album every day, a new CD with me every day. And then I put it in the car so I can listen to it on my ride to and from the studio. And I'm totally trying to play catch-up that way.
So it's really funny that you bring that up because all those CDs ... well, most of them have literally been sitting inside my CD drawers unopened since then. And I'm just now taking like one out a day and trying to play catch-up.
― Beatrix Kiddo, Thursday, 21 May 2009 20:36 (sixteen years ago)
MT: It seems also in the book that we saw a more grown-up or adult element to Eminem. Controversy is still obviously going to hound you because that's just the nature of the beast. The O'Reilly thing proves that. But I'm wondering if Eminem, the father and the humanist, has finally caught up with Eminem the artist?
EMINEM: I don't know about that. You might wanna listen to the record first!
MT: OK . Well, you know, there are so many parts of the book that are just genuinely touching. They reveal you have a genuinely good heart — like when you and Proof helped that little girl who was stranded in the airport. Stuff like that. I guess what I'm wondering is if there's a change in image. I just read yesterday that you are going to be in a new movie this summer, and you can't say anything about it, but that it's a Disney movie. So, I thought, well, "That has got to be Eminem the dad coming into focus there."
EMINEM: No, it's not a Disney movie!
MT: OK. Well, then let's forget that.
EMINEM: I was just being sarcastic. Yeah, I'm alongside Hanna Montana in my new short film!
