yeah At The Bottom is awesome...as far as the six bonus live tracks at the end..."Art School" and "Hold Onto the Rails" would have made a legendary single...prolley one of the best of the 80s.

Not sure what I'll vote for, this will require some thought. Point that thing is kind of epic, but I've always loved Billy Two...

Someone was on Vehicle (is that right?); it's on the second disc...reformed Clean has some decent moments but the stuff I really go nuts for is the old stuff which is mostly collected on Disc 1 of Anthology...if you can find a copy of Compilation, though, snap it up!

Yeah Compilation and Vehicle are both totally amazing, totally brilliant. After that, I can really take or leave most of their stuff...

actually Modern Rock is not that bad...pretty and atmospheric...Safe in the Rain and Outside the Cage hold up quite well I think.

btw: absolutely thrilling show at LPR on Tuesday. Didn't expect them to sounds as "big" as they did. Place was packed as well. I had no idea they still had that sort of following. Song selection was almost perfect and they really appeared to be enjoying themselves. Not sure, however, what was up with D. Kilgour's "look" though. The headband and bandanna made him look like Mike Reno. They certainly brought it though.

Well, I don't have a complete set list but recall hearing "Anything Could Happen" and "Getting Older." They also did a nice version of "Drawing to a (w)hole. Also, the earlier part of the set they stretched things out a bit frequently getting into a hypnotic groove of sorts and, seriously, sounding a bit like Neu. Totally unexpected. Having been a long time fan but never having seen them before I expected them to be a bit rickety and shambolic but...they were the exact opposite. They were heavy.

They played about an hour and the crowd was very enthusiatic.

Haha yeah it was weird. I've never seen them before so at first I thought "does he always dress like that?" but then Hamish joked about how "David's going for a cross between Dick Dale and Mark Knopfler."

Fun gig in DC last night although the sound was not mixed that well. David Kilgour was wearing an upturned on the sides straw cowboy like hat this time, with Bob Scott wearing a fisherman's one. Seems like a similar set from the other night. An hour and 15 minutes or so. Lots of Neu-ish sounding cuts, one that reminded me of Wire, another kinda Bowie-like, plus some jangly ones.

"Tally Ho" was again the last one before the encores. The Kilgours ranted about politics a bunch between a couple of songs. Dislike for Dubya and New Zealand's current head and the entire 2 party structure in the US of A

That's a bummer, I read some interview recently with DK where he basically said that The Clean aren't likely to ever record again. When I saw them in 2010 they were fantastic.

Feel free to c/p my description from the other thread -- I'm on zing. The show was fun to talk about afterwards and started well, but kinda plopped rather than sizzled.

I do wonder whether DK was playing so poorly bcz he was out of it, bcz he didn't give a shit or out of actual hostility to the crowd

Yeah i saw them in 2010 too, they were great but their songs do fall apart instead of end properly so I thought that was just their thing. On that point alone (referenced on the other thread).

fine if they don't feel compelled to make another record, but i guess I'd hope they at least enjoy playing together from time to time.

It started off ok, DK had his back to the audience and was pretty far out with the solos, and then each song would just kinda plop at the end, right when I was hoping/expecting it would take off. This happened over and over, there were some comments about the president, drones, riots, and pleas for small talk between songs (Hamish seemed lucid and normal, Bob did too) and then around 10 they stopped playing, disappeared behind the curtain for a while (longer than usual) and then came back sans DK, who was nowhere to be found. An audience member got on stage and asked him to come back "You've inspired so many of us to play music, we want to hear you" and he never came back so that guy's friends sang/played Tally Ho with 2/3 of The Clean.

Hamish and Bob sounded good though! I got to see Hamish's rather weird drumming style.

this is a bummer. they've become one of my favorite bands over the last couple of years and were pretty great in 2007 from what i recall. also strange why David is touring if he doesn't want to. these american shows don't seem to be a great money-maker?

i forgot to mention that there was one point where either bob or hamish said something like "you don't understand us anyway" or something to that effect
that was the only moment that genuinely bummed me out
otherwise it just didn't live up to my (admittedly high) expectations

i also think their first song was PTTSE and the played Fish later but who cares

I went with little/no expectations having not seen 'em before and had a blast. Sloppy and snippy and short as it was, it's impossible to argue with that rhythm section and even a cranky David Kilgour is still fantastic. Loved the encore, too!

Let me just say that both Kilgour brothers' new albums are excellent. Still need to hear the new Robert Scott.

Looking forward to their Memphis show next week. I need to hear Hamish's album. I love the new (last year's) Mad Scene record. Very satisfying. Repped for it over on the MS thread a while back.

show in brooklyn was good fun. ira and georgia were on stage for a lot of it, there was one extended jam, can't remeber which song it was. a lot of songs did end abruptly, but not sure i would have noticed had i not read this thread.
not sure if it is a sign of great songwriting or that i have been listening to a lot of clean lately, but it's amazing how david plays an opening chord on the guitar and i can instantly hear the entire song in my head. i love this band.

That’s sad. I’m sure there are people on this board who knew him well, but I’ll just say I met him at a party in Brooklyn circa 1999 and he struck me as a very likeable and unassuming guy. Easy to talk to. I bumped into him a few more times in that general period and then one last time about 20 years later in Williamsburg when he was shopping for clothes. He may not have remembered me but I couldn’t help remember him, he had one of those looks and one of those vibes you don’t forget.

RIP. selfishly I'm lamenting that I never got to see them live. almost did once, they were opening for Yo La Tengo in LA, but we were waiting for my then-girlfriend's brother because he was driving, and he was out selling someone weed and turned up late and we missed their entire set. he's dead now so I probably shouldn't be mad at him any more.

Got my compilation in the mail yesterday, was listening to it in the car today; besides "Point That Thing Somewhere Else," really liked "Flowers." Good aimless-driving drone.

'getting older' is not only the best song but also asks the most pertinent questions

In the car for a few hours today, got through the rest of it. Very glad I bought it (triggered by unfortunate news).

"Point That Thing Somewhere Else," the song that piqued my interest, is still my favourite: first-tier, HOF drone. Yo La Tengo covering it is a perfect match. I only wish it went on for another five or six or ten minutes--they couldn't had another "Marquee Moon" to their name.

There are a few ordinary songs on there (over 40 altogether, so of course there are), and there's one awful experiment, "Ludwig" (mercifully brief), but good songs kept popping up regularly, and the last two or three were really good, so nice finish.

clemenza i'm surprised you hadn't heard them before, just because you seem very knowledgable about lots of other punk and indie from the era. Compilation was also my introduction to them, and still my go-to.

"Anything Could Happen" was the first one that really wowed me, and still one of my very faves of theirs. it's one of those songs that seems familiar, the very first time you hear it

I just didn't know them at all, although I realize now that Christgau reviewed them in the late '80s--there were a few New Zealand bands he kept up with--and I would have read those reviews at the time. They were good, but for whatever reason I never ended up buying anything.

have you heard any of the many other bands in their circle? chills, bats, tall dwarves, etc. All worth while and amazing.

I have Submarine Bells, and once posted about the three songs I really like: "Tied Up in Chain," "I Soar," and "Effloresce and Deliquesce." Nothing by the others.
