Feel like I'm pushing my luck here but here goes.

What I thought, if we keep this thread going from now until 1st January and then create a poll with the 20 most popular bands and the=, I.E. if Bucks Fizz, Nu Shooz and Red box are all equal 19th, they all go through to the poll section.

So, if you can just put your nominations, without saying why, I'll add up the votes and we can make our cases and explain our reasons in the Poll on Jan 2nd.

For a band to really qualify as the "best ever", it can't be limited by any one style. So Parliament/Funkadelic, cool as they were, don't deserve the nomination. I mean, they only knew how to play one style, funk, which was James Brown's territory anyway. And we can't nominate James Brown, because he was just one guy. Bands that can perform effectively across a broad range of styles are more deserving (such as, say, The Beatles or Ween). But we're never gonna be able to nail down the best of the best, because there are so many types of music available. Nevertheless, I think John McLaughlin might be capable of this.

I have a serious problem with The Fall and Joy Division... X will never be my thing... just thought I'd share.
Also, isn't the stone roses mostly boring? I mean 'I wanna be adored' is great but the rest is probably boring. Kinda like how Slint is seriously overrated and has a boring side.

What I've had to do, and I am taking this as seriously as possible in order to get as definitive an answer as possible, is to record each voter seperately, as well as each vote. In this way, anyone who votes for 1 band and then changes their mind, will find their final choice being counted and no others.

Obviously, this method is not foolproof as anyone can set up different accounts, but, what's the point of that and who could be arsed anyway?

Clearly silly votes will still be counted, although, I'm relying on the goodwill of the majority to not block vote in this respect. If a sudden rush of votes come in for, say, Aha, I would have to consider if they were genuine or not but I would obviously suspect the former.

To those who have stated they don't have a favourite band, sorry about that, but if you don't there ain't really much point being on this thread or voting. This is purely a nominating thread where the 20 bands with the most nominations and the = will be placed in a poll sometime after 2nd January.

I realise that this is not the definitive way of measuring this. There are a number of other ways I could have attempted to do this. a knockout competitiion. Lists of peoples top 10 bands, etc but this is the simplest, the most direct and therefore, the most sensible. The more Indidvidual votes are cast, the more people will have a say and, therefore, the more accurate the final 20 list will be.

It's always amazed me that such a poll has never been done before. I post on a number of boards and this is the one where, I feel, the highest number of people who are passionate and knowledgable about music, post and converse. Instead of waiting for others to do this, I decided, during a drunken moment last night, to attempt to gather the information myself.

I have quite a bit of free time over the next few weeks and am committed to making sure this is done as fairly and accurately as possible. I am fascinated to know the result and I feel that the methodology and criteria used, not to mention the sheer volume of votes, will allow an accurate picture to emerge.

The list of the 20 bands going through to the final poll will be published sometime during the day (UK time) of 2nd January

That's why, as I have stated a few times up thread, the final poll will be made up of only the 20 bands with the most votes and = votes. Therefore, if 5 bands are all equal 18th, they will all be included. if for some reason, there are, like, 35 bands all on the same number of votes, then, a play off can be done but the chances are, this won't happen, just because the sheer number of votes involved will result in a certain amount of repetition of bands.

I have noticed that news of this poll has been mentioned on a few different boards already.

I would appreciate it if I could be informed by one of the moderators if it is clear that fans of, for example (oh I don't know) The Cardiacs, Jethro tull or The Beta band suddenly start block voting, having recently joined this site for the first time. It will be easy to spot this happening but evidence that votes are from new members will confirm it.

It does strike me as akin to asking "what is your favorite product available at the supermarket". Some will pick Cabernet Sauvignon, some will pick rib-eye steaks, some will pick snack cakes, some will pick abrasive pads. At the very most it tells us something about the demographics of the forum during a short period. It tells us absolutely nothing about the actual merits of the artists.

I'm not a huge fan of polls on ILX. They tend to draw us in, but rarely offer much insight or tips for seeking out something new, and absolutely clutter the front page. There's some value in a tightly constrained poll: your favorite Nordic Progressive Folk album, or your favorite nu-gaze act of this decade. That sort of poll draws attention to things that might have been missed as the press of new releases have obscured recent gems. An ILX equivalent of what I consider and useful poll might be "what is your favored red wine grape variety". Its meaningful and productive in that it encourages people to split hairs, and offer descriptive distinctions that will aid both those of us with a passing acquaintance, and future readers delving into the ILM archives, to determine "I like X, should I hunt down Y or Z?".

It seems I made a mistake and after checking the votes again, the second entry for New Order on the list from yesterday has been deleted. Not sure where it came from but New Order currently have 3 votes.

One or two people are still not reading this properly and are nominating bands simply on the basis of no one else having nominated them yet. If you have done this, please let me know and I will ammend your vote. It's your favourite band of all time youre voting for. 1 band, 1 vote.

I can understand some people feeling that this poll is a little futile in that, all it will ever show is votes cast at the time of the poll, for artists which are currently the voter's favourite. As i stated above, what it proves is debatable, although the more votes are cast, the more accurate picture will emerge.

The issue of block voting is obviously an important one and somebody has to take a stand when this occurs. As I am running the poll, I will be doing this. Nothing Fascist, all done in the name of fair play and accuracy.

Can I also ask that people don't E-mail me with votes? It makes it look dodgy when a band who has only been mentioned once suddenly has 4 or 5 votes.

Other than that, this is going as well as I expected so far. plenty of votes coming in and, as Mark G stated, plenty of interesting debate. Hopefully, this will continue and, when a final result emerges some time around the middle of January, we'll have played this to death and everybody will have had a vote and a say with an overall winner emerging.

Keep voting. (and as I stated earlier, If you want to change your vote, please state what FROM as well as what to. I will find your original vote eventually, but it will save me time)

Anyone can vote how they like but I've had a few E-mails with votes. It just looks shady when a band that has only been nominated once on this thread suddenly has a few votes (via E-mail, which are, therefore, not listed)

It's the reason why so many of the most insightful posters no longer visit here. I used to visit here to read intelligent argument and insightful prose and, occasionally, contribute something myself but, like many others, I rarely bother nowadays.

If you don't like the poll, just ignore it...not a problem! Just trying to do something interesting and worthwhile!

ilm tends to rise to the occasion and people still appear to make intelligent arguments and provide insightful prose - the recent round of polls that pitted stooges/sabbath/vu vs every other band in the world were entertaining and worthwhile.

now I appreciate you being all scientific with your approach but when you yield a list like the one below, well, I agree that it's kind of depressing and underwhelming... but blaming snarkers seems like some mislaid sour grapes, especially since most of ilx's "rabid dogs" have been sent to the cornfield by this point. I hope you feel better after blowing off some steam, though.

Maybe if this poll didn't have such stupid rules, it would have been more successful. How many ILM users did you really think were going to nominate a band? Let's be super generous and say 100. But to have a list of top 20 bands, you would need at least 20+19+18+17+16+15+14+13+12+11+10+9+8+7+6+5+4+3+2+1 = 210 ILX voters. Otherwise you would have ties that would exceed the maximum poll options # (as you currently have since 59! bands have received only 1 vote). Also, those 210 non-existent voters would have to vote perfectly. Otherwise you would need more than 210 voters to establish your top 20.

Here is a perfectly intelligent way you could have fixed this: Allow each ILX voter to nominate 5-10 bands. Possibly give them X amount of points to distribute among as many nominations as they'd like. Maybe every voter gets 10 points. You can give all 10 to Fleetwood Mac, or give 1 point to 10 different bands. Then count up the points and create your list from that.

As it is now, though, it is the worst possible way to run this sort of poll. Is it really surprising that people aren't interested in playing along?

All you need for a top 20 (or, be be reasonable, a top 15-25) are a few clear front-runners and a double handfull of also-rans. Which is what we've got now. Hell, according to Sven's last count, there are 19 bands with more than one vote, which is exactly what he seems to have been shooting for. So what's the problem? How is that a problem? Ranking doesn't matter, all this 1st round does is to determine the final list of 20. I just don't buy that "math" is the issue here. There's a level of hostility ("Sven Hassel Shutthefuckup") that's out of proportion to dodgy methodology...

I think it extends from the math. I know that I thought 1 nomination per person was pretty shitty. And since the thing seemed like bullshit from the beginning, I didn't take it seriously. When everyone nominated the Vines (obv. a joke pick, but so what?) and Sven began to censor the votes, I think it just inspired more hostility. If he had addressed the reason no one was taking it seriously, instead of going OMGZ THE INTERNET IS SERIOUS BIZNESS, then he might have been able to avoid some of the hostility.

I know that polls like this can come across all lowest common denominator and I'm also aware that all I would be doing was collecting a list of bands to put into a poll some time in the new year. I saw it as an excercise, not in voting but in discussing a selection of bands from right across the musical canon that might not otherwise get compared before coming to consensus of a kind, albeit in the broadest sense.

In many ways it has been pretty successful. Plenty of votes, a wide range of bands and a few clear front runners. I decided to run the poll in the way I did on the basis of the idea, perhaps misguided, that it would bring about interesting discussion. I suppose it has, but not in the way I envisaged.

I worked the maths side of things out with an expectation of getting about 200 votes. In hindsight, I should maybe have gone with 3 band or, as suggested upthread, 5, but this seemed a good way of polarising opinion. It will definitely work.

As for the accusations of over-seriousness, Looking back over some of my earlier responses, I can see how I might have handled this better, and therefore avoided my little temper tantrum yesterday, but some of the abuse was over the top.

But the fucking Vines...

I'm really not that serious. some of my responses to other threads bear this out I hope.

There have been about 130 votes up till now, give or take. I could knock this on the head but I'd quite like to carry on and create a poll after the new year and if others agree, please keep voting. I still think this could be worthwhile although what it will ulitimately prove is debatable.

Maybe we could have a seperate discussion thread about that.

Maybe there is valued discussion to be had from comparing the relative merits of Immortal, the Flatlanders, the Wu-Tang Clan, and Pere Ubu but I can't really get my head around it. To gank the supermarket metaphor someone use above, I may have a bag of haricotes vertes, a jar of organic, unsalted, chunky peanut butter, a flank steak, and a six-pack of Asahi in my house, but the question of which of those is best is never gonna come up. They are for different things.

This is, admittedly, where I sort of got it wrong from the start. I saw this as mainly a thread for nominations and the poll as being the place where the discussion will take place, ie when the list was down to 20. I like polls (although I can understand why some don't) I enjoy the discussion and the comparison aspect and I always knew that it wouldn't prove who was the best band or anything like that but that it might show where a few people's heads were at.
