Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 1 January 2009 08:43 (sixteen years ago)

At the risk of the eternal ridicule of those perfect in every thought and deed, here's the kind of shit that would most likely end up in my decade top ten (suggest away):

1. Shameless samples
2. Several songs in one
3. Songs that sound like a song submerged in crud or shoegaze
4. Shtick
5. Novelty
6. House music that sounds like Shakedown: "At Night"
7. Irritating repetitions
8. Chirpy Danish/Scandinavian pop

Thank you

Kevin John Bozelka, Thursday, 1 January 2009 08:56 (sixteen years ago)

kjb, why ar you sober enough to start this thread?

The Reverend, Thursday, 1 January 2009 10:11 (sixteen years ago)

Just thinking about this topic reminds me of how good a decade it's been for new music. I started a list (mostly rock-oriented, I'm afraid), and found it hard to whittle it below 25.

'entertainment purposes' ONLY! (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 24 May 2009 07:07 (sixteen years ago)

i'll be first in line for pointless narcissistic end-of-decade list making when the decade starts actually being over

'entertainment purposes' ONLY! (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 24 May 2009 07:23 (sixteen years ago)

This end of the decade stuff is fun, but still really surreal to look at. Was it really eight or nine years ago when the Strokes were supposed to be heirs to some rock and roll throne with their, admittedly impressive, debut? This kind of thing strengthens narratives surrounding the trends of the decade (The decline of This Genre, the rise That) for better or worse.

Aaliyah Aaliyah
Outkast Stankonia
Jill Scott Words and Sounds

i'm disappointed people are doing this so early. disappointed!

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Sunday, 24 May 2009 10:48 (sixteen years ago)

yeah the new wilco album isn't even out yet!!

some people wait a lifetime for a momus like this (J0rdan S.), Sunday, 24 May 2009 10:51 (sixteen years ago)

It is early for these lists. But it also seems pretty laid-back at this point, and all subject to change. At this point, it feels more like an early nominations thread, with the real arguing to come later.

And J0rdan's right, too. There's a lot of good material left to release this year (e.g., Wilco, Annie, Sonic Youth, Grizzy Bear, Clientele, The Books, The New Pornographers, Roxy Music, Amy Winehouse). But still. Besides, this thread already reminded me of some great stuff that I'd forgotten, and need to revisit (e.g., The Streets and (can't believe I forgot) Kanye West and The Exploding Hearts) or that I've slept-on, and need to explore (e.g., Fujiya and Miyagi).

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 May 2009 12:19 (sixteen years ago)

I would have liked this thread better if people had posted their favorite music into categories

I am mostly interested in Dad Rock or close variations thereof (perhaps John Fahey, Aimee Mann, Clientele, and Wilco) exceptions - Johanna Newson's voice annoys me to no end. So no category can be perfect - especially for an "aspie" sailor like me. Oh and don't get me started on Devendra Banhart's voice. Makes me sad that Natalie Portman isn't the kind of girl I used to imagine her as.

Generally, if your top ten albums includes a token artist I hate, I'm going to dismiss that list as a whole (by quickly scrolling down to a new list to get away from said artist). I'm such a bastard in that way. It's like when people get upset because someone includes ____ with _____ in the same sentence.

I don't want to stray from topic but there are a lot better hippies she could have picked. Banhart must have swindled her. He must be some sort of alpha male hippie that got first dibs because he was a persistent asshole.

goodbye horses, I'm crying over you (Mulvaney), Sunday, 24 May 2009 14:59 (sixteen years ago)

I like "dad-rock," too, but maybe people have diverse tastes?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 May 2009 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

That's why I suggested categories. People have the right to diverse tastes and I respect that. I like a little of every genre too but alas it is just that, a little. Anyways, please don't stop making top 10 lists because of me.

goodbye horses, I'm crying over you (Mulvaney), Sunday, 24 May 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)

I'd like to see a list on genres I don't know anything about like jazz or country actually.

can't wait to read all your awesome addendums and corrections to these lists in 6 months

μ-Fish (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 24 May 2009 15:40 (sixteen years ago)

Haha. You think there wouldn't be 6 months of addendums and corrections if people waited until December?

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 May 2009 15:50 (sixteen years ago)

kinda thought this thread was more "at this point what kinda stuff will be on your end of year lists." That's how I was answering anyway and that's how most ppl seem to be from how they are phrasing it.

❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉Plaxico❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉❉ (I know, right?), Sunday, 24 May 2009 15:53 (sixteen years ago)

Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 24 May 2009 15:54 (sixteen years ago)

First of all, I'm glad this thread finally got bumped. Second, haters chill. If you read the first post, this thread is more about Your Top Ten Fave Singles/Albums of This Decade so far. Your entire top ten won't come from the next six months no matter how many riches they burp up. So tell us your fave albums/singles so far. And find me an Aughties metal band as amazing as The Angelic Process.

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 24 May 2009 17:54 (sixteen years ago)

Tim F, surprised to see The Knife missing from your top ten albums.

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 24 May 2009 17:55 (sixteen years ago)

2. Several songs in one
This represents the worst of mainstream pop.

Wait a minute, Geir. Aren't you on fire for "several songs in one?" Isn't that precisely what "Supper's Ready" and acres of prog are all about?

Kevin John Bozelka, Sunday, 24 May 2009 17:57 (sixteen years ago)

Surprising to me how little I'm really enthusiastic. Can certainly get behind:

Arcade Fire, Funeral (seems much older; had to double-check it was released after 1999.)
New Pornographers, Mass Romantic
The Mountain Goats, All Hail West Texas
Belle and Sebastian, Dear Catastrophe Waitress
The White Stripes, Elephant

And beyond that, I'm not sure! Maybe the first Man Man record, maybe Widow City, maybe Talkie Walkie, maybe What's Happening in Pernambuco... but much as I liked these records when I got them I haven't really returned to them.

Guayaquil (eephus!), Sunday, 24 May 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

KJB,

So when we're gonna this for real, can we start a new thread?

μ-Fish (Whiney G. Weingarten), Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

i'm disappointed people are doing this so early. disappointed!

I think it's understood that these are supposed to be the favorites SO FAR.. they're going to change over time anyway.

billstevejim, Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

single of the decade imo..

billstevejim, Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

80's and 60's were better, but 00's was not bad.

billstevejim, Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

important question: was "Say My Name" this decade or 90's?

billstevejim, Sunday, 24 May 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

Allmusic says it was a single in 2000 but the album came out in 1999.

Maybe should have included Voodoo in my list.

thread's interesting just to sort of be reminded of what's been out. not sure about a solid 10 on either, but things likely to place for me:

m.i.a. kala (or possibly piracy funds terrorism)
t.i. king
marnie stern -- one or the other, i go back and forth. probably the second one
outkast stankonia
lumo vocalcity
first DFA comp

things that could possibly, i don't know: sean paul, amadou and mariam, konono no. 1, keren ann, times new viking, jay-z black album, lots i'm sure i'm not thinking of.

singles would be even harder, but some things i'd hate to leave off:

"gasolina" daddy yankee
"oye mi canto" n.o.r.e./nina sky/etc (i prefer the mix with tego to the one with daddy yankee)
"pull shapes" pipettes
"oh" ciara
"umbrella" rihanna
beyonce track to be named later (seriously, how do you choose?)

Eazy, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 04:18 (sixteen years ago)

'the argument' might crack my top 10 if i thought long and hard about it actually. black dice - 'beaches and canyons' is also up there somewhere. add those two to the records i listed previously.

Charlie Howard, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 04:50 (sixteen years ago)

Nice to see Fever Ray on someone's list already, despite being so new. It'll def be on mine.

clicking through all the "best of 200*" lists online to help jog my memory made me realize how mainstream my tastes were this decade. but with the naughty's rap renaissance being so great i'm not sure i care.

top 10 singles:

slave 4 u - britney
never leave you (uh ooh) - lumidee
baby boy - beyonce
digital love - daft punk
music - madonna
get ur freak on - missy elliott
the streets - original pirate material
drop it like it's hot - snoop dogg
me & u - cassie
wait (the whisper song) - yin yang twins

top 10 albums:

snoop dogg - r&g
jay z - black album
dr. dre - chronic 2001
voodoo - d'angelo
sambass 1&2 (brazilian drum and bass comp) <--- counts as one cause i bought them at the same time
ludacris - word of mouf
postal service - give up
kanye west - college dropout
kanye west - graduation
kanye west - 808s and heatbreaks

fwiw these charts would be more reflective of my tastes if i we were allowed to put essential mixes recorded off the radio in the album section.

Artists of the decade is also an interesting thread topic. Kanye and Craig Finn! Good Nos. 1 -- 2. No GhostFace?

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 26 May 2009 12:04 (sixteen years ago)

(I remember Alfred saying GhostFace is the best album artist of the decade. I think he may be right).

Daniel, Esq., Tuesday, 26 May 2009 12:04 (sixteen years ago)

My favourite album artist of the decade would probably be Meshell Ndegeocello: she's released three r'n'b/soul albums and one jazz album during this decade, all of them good or great, and all of them also different from each other.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 12:19 (sixteen years ago)

It's been a long decade that seems to have gone by very quickly, if that makes sense. It's quite freaky to think that Nixon by Lambchop is from the same decade as Merriweather Post Pavilion, but it also doesn't seem like five minutes since I bought XTRMNTR.

For some reason I've always thought Supreme Clientele is a 1999 album, but Wikipedia says it's from 2000. It came out in January though, maybe that explains it.

^^^man i loved this but it seems sooooooooo long ago. this decade seems incredibly confusing.

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:37 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno...i think decades are always kind of vast and hugely varied when you look at them through the lens of something that moves as quickly as pop music.

some dude, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:38 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah but it's the first one I've really lived through and paid intense attention to for the whole time.

shit, seeing brand new on this list puts me on this crazy trip; i'm very familiar with the record, being a 15 years old when that came out. for a lot of reasons, i can't really deal with emo at all anymore, but i feel like that was one of the records that at least did it right.

i am rubber, t u.r.koglu (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:45 (sixteen years ago)

Reflection Eternal would be probably in my top 20

some dude, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 14:48 (sixteen years ago)

argh ten is SO HARD for albums. It was tough getting down from 25.

Charalambides - Likeness
Nurse With Wound - Huffin' Rag Blues
Fiery Furnaces - Blueberry Boat
Kate Bush - Aerial
Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 - Bob Dinners
Coil - Ape Of Naples
Sun City Girls - Hi Asia/lo Pacific
Biota - Half A True Day
OOIOO - Gold & Green
Panda Bear - Person Pitch

kills me to leave out great albums by Eyvind Kang, Es, Mum, Volcano The Bear, etc.

top five singles maybe are

A-Frames - Neutron Bomb
LCD Soundsystem - Losing My Edge
Missy Elliot - Work It
Johnny Boy - You Are The Generation...
Pixeltan - Get Up/Say What

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:52 (sixteen years ago)

and what are the big canon mixes of the decade? i'm totally out of my depth there, but michael mayer's fabric mix is one of my favorite things.

would you ask tom petty that? (tipsy mothra), Tuesday, 26 May 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

i'm not totally sure about C2 in top 10, most likely to be bumped down the list later on.

only mixtapes i would think about maybe putting in the list over their companion albums are one of Kanye's pre-College Dropout tapes and Jadakiss's Kiss My Ass. but then i'm kind of virulantly anti-mixtapes-equal-albums stuff.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 10:40 (sixteen years ago)

I'm amazed that XTRMNTR came out this decade. It seems a lifetime ago.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 10:42 (sixteen years ago)

And already I've thought of about five albums I missed. Kate Bush! Boards Of Canada! Argh.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 10:42 (sixteen years ago)

i posted an albums 100 nearly 18 months ago so in December i'll just add about 15 albums since and shuffle the order

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 10:48 (sixteen years ago)

hmmm i'd probably want to make room somewhere for unwound's 'leaves turn inside you' as well as the kate bush. a top 20 list would be a much easier feat than narrowing it down to 10. that way i might even be able to squeeze in 'blackwater park' somewhere and possibly blonde redhead's '23'.

i'll post a revised list sometime soon

Charlie Howard, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:25 (sixteen years ago)

This is why I never have any influence upon the consensus:

Isolee - Rest
Suba - Sao Paulo Confessions
Zoot Woman - Living in a Magazine
Akufen - My Way
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
Roisin Murphy - Ruby Blue
The Knife - Silent Shout
Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
Autodrone - Strike a Match (check if you loved the 90's Medicine)
School of Seven Bells - Alpinisms

Singles (problably guilty of tokenism, but no worse than the eventual canon will be):

Azzido Da Bass - Dooms Night (Timo Maas Remix)
Daft Punk - Harder Better Faster Stronger
Freelance Hellraiser - A Stroke of Genius (Strokes vs. C Aguilera)
Kelis - Milkshake
!!! (Chk chk chk) - Me and Giuliani Down by the Schoolyard
Kylie Minogue - Come into My World (Fischerspooner Mix)
M.I.A. - Bucky Done Gun (perhaps)
Royksopp - What Else is There (Trentemoller remix)
Crystal Castles - Crimewave
Friendly Fires - Paris (Aeroplane remix)

Derelict, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:23 (sixteen years ago)

Isolee - Rest

This reminds me; that Isolee disc with the song Shrapnel is outstanding, too.

Nick, why you choose worst Six By Seven album? :(

sad blue nose hybrid with shit football crew (country matters), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:34 (sixteen years ago)

Azzido Da Bass - Dooms Night (Timo Maas Remix)

Woah, I can't believe I forgot this. Single of the decade.

a hoy hoy, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:46 (sixteen years ago)

Can't really go wrong with Tim's list, tho no mentions of e.g. Fall Out Boy or Jacques Lu Cont or Andrew WK on the thread so far.

etc, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:53 (sixteen years ago)

eligible for the 90s too ha xp

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 12:54 (sixteen years ago)

etc - The Killers' "Mr Brightside (Thin White Duke Mix)" should be on my list somewhere given it was my favourite song of 2005!

Also I've curiously forgotten 2008 - I'd want to find a way to squeeze in "Bongo Jam", "Untouched", "Love Story" and "Whispers"...

Tim F, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:12 (sixteen years ago)

whose "love story"?

I didn't.

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:27 (sixteen years ago)

tim, did you hear any of the various cassie leaks over the past year and a bit? 'is it you?' is great but a curious choice

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)

and 'born to make you happy' surely wasn't from the 00s!!!

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:32 (sixteen years ago)

personally i find it difficult enough to do this for any given year, can't imagine being able to do it in any meaningful sense for a decade. albums will be easier obv.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:33 (sixteen years ago)

Hmm I was thinking "Born To Make You Happy" came out at the beginning of 2000 but maybe not.

I heard some of the Cassie leaks ("Turn The Lights Off", "Soldier 4 Your Love", "I'm In Love With You") but the universal teen-drama simplicity of "Is It You" really gets to me.

"Love Story" is Taylor Swift.

Tim F, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:43 (sixteen years ago)

'Born To Make You Happy' was the 2nd #1 of 2000 in the UK iirc

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 13:54 (sixteen years ago)

Principle Participant - Wonderful
Jason Forrest - 10 Amazing Years
Portishead - The Rip

Touch of Death, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 16:04 (sixteen years ago)

i dont think i can do this, every time i try i end up picking middle of the road consensus picks which makes the final result the ten albums i never want to hear again

Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga

Good album, but you people need to go back and hear Girls Can Tell and then revise your lists.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 17:58 (sixteen years ago)

I like Girls Can Tell alot, but not as much as Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga.

nate woolls, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

Sleeve: though my list would look nothing like yours (apart from Aerial), I kinda really really want your record collection.

Nicole Mitchell & Black Earth Ensemble - Hope, Future, And Destiny

I guess I could google, but what is this? Some sort of Jesus Acedo project?

Enemy Insects (NickB), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 18:50 (sixteen years ago)

I prefer Kill The Moonlight. Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and Gimme Fiction come in second (for this decade - SoS probably equals them).

Sickamous Mouthall (Scik Mouthy), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

NickB, Nicole Mitchell is current president of the AACM and my favorite jazz artist of the decade. She has like 4 or 5 fantastic albums.

sleeve, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 20:58 (sixteen years ago)

XP Sorry that last vent. I wasn't considering who wrote the comment I was replying to. But color me decidedly underwhelmed by the band Spoon (in general). The music is just too polite for me, I guess - I've nary a clue as to what the fans are responding to.

Sometimes I wish American fans pursued the Japanese course: when they fall in love with juju music or bossanova or goa trance they form bands that emulate the feel of the original so closely as to rival their inspirations, and then perhaps surpass them in their own way. Or the British, misunderstanding the context and conventions of (usually) black American music enough to return with music that, again, rivals its inspirations (at an oblique angle). Here in America, we get polite colorations with textures or rhythms that wouldn't offend the Starbucks sound system, and it crowds the critical canon, while meanwhile there's this extraordinary stuff that is just over the borders of what's permissible in consensus lists. And that from a band presumably inspired by Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebzeit. I guess I don't want novelty - history and my collection is too large - I want hypernovelty.

Based on the short list from my computer:

The Rants—Get Back Into It
Aaliyah—s/t
Dabenport—s/t
El Guapo—Super/System
Deadly Snakes—Ode to Joy
Exploding Hearts—Guitar Romantic
MIA—Kala
TV on the Radio—Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes
A Frames—s/t
Indian Jewelery—Invasive Exotics
Nomo—Ghost Rock

No doubt some more jazz and punk when I go through my physical albums.

Yea, Exploding Hearts! That disc needs some love in these decade-end lists. (Nomo's good, too)

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 29 May 2009 00:31 (sixteen years ago)

The 00's were awesome, partially because of the influx of DIY that the indie explosion & internet created.. DIY probably increased more this decade than any since the 70s. (Maybe i'm wrong, but thats how it looks to me)

billstevejim, Friday, 29 May 2009 00:54 (sixteen years ago)

i'm happy mclusky was loved.. i tried pushing it on lots of kids, but nobody i know seemed to care.

billstevejim, Friday, 29 May 2009 00:55 (sixteen years ago)

word. and the fact that i put them so high on my list would suggest that i'm not a "serious cat" all of the time. :)

and daniel, i hate a lot of 60s music too. but the stuff i truly love from that era gets the nod over a lot of the stuff on my 00s list

Charlie Howard, Friday, 29 May 2009 01:19 (sixteen years ago)

good thing about these threads is I get reminded of things, I forgot that Boredoms VCN was from '00. I think Indian Jewelry's Free Gold should probably be in my top 25 as well.

Is it really, really weird for anybody else seeing all this music (that seem to come out so recently too!) getting rounded up together finally?

I was too young to go through this with the entire 1990s so this is my first "wow, I can't believe this decade is almost over and I remember all of this" decade.

Cunga, Sunday, 14 June 2009 07:47 (sixteen years ago)

Yes, it's incredibly weird. That said, after getting annoyed having a genuine argument with someone who refused to believe anything other than "music was better in the sixties", I am quite enjoying making lists of fucking amazing music i love from this decade.

I'm just as guilty as everyone else for not mentioning him enough here but Ludacris needs to be remembered when we come round to doing this properly. Two of the best albums and like a million great singles. Think votes might get split by trying to figure out whether Southern Hospitality is better than Saturday is better than P Poppin is better than YOOOOOOOOOOOOUS A HOOOOOOOOO is better than Act A Fool is better than etc. Did we ever do a Luda singles poll?

b!tchass, birdchested bastard sees a dude bigger than he (a hoy hoy), Saturday, 20 June 2009 13:36 (sixteen years ago)

"What's Your Fantasy" is in my top 10 singles of the decade, and Back For The First Time is probably in my top 100 albums, but he peaked pretty early and hasn't really been that consistent. "Southern Hospitality" and "Move" and a couple non-remix guest spots are classics for me, but he's got like 20 singles that are garbage too.

These 10 albums probably meant the most to me for a whole host of irrational reasons:

1. Atmosphere, When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold (Rhymesayers), 2008
2. Madvillain, Madvillainy (Stones Throw), 2004
3. The Owls, Daughters and Suns (Magic Marker), 2007
4. Low, Things We Lost in the Fire (Kranky), 2000
5. David Byrne & Brian Eno, Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (Todomundo), 2008 [re-sequenced version on my computer]
6. K'NAAN, Troubadour (A&M/Octone), 2009 [advance version, which was pretty different]
7. Bruce Springsteen, Working on a Dream (Columbia), 2009
8. Fugazi, The Argument (Dischord), 2001
9. P.O.S., Ipecac Neat (Doomtree), 2004
10. Madonna, Confessions on a Dance Floor (Warner Bros.), 2005

Turangalila, Friday, 9 October 2009 17:32 (fifteen years ago)

Can anyone recommend me some hip-hop singles? Since I'm not an native English speaker most of the time I don't get hip-hop because I rarely focus on the lyrics, so my attention is almost completely drawn to the production techniques. The only hip-hop which enthuses me this decade so far is those with production similar by J Dilla or MF Doom. Sort of big immersive beats with a dash of psychedelia, something which I can play without focusing on the lyrics so much...I suppose not focusing on the lyrics when listening to hip-hop is sort of missing the point... but still, I love the sound.

Any song recommendations please?

Moka, Friday, 9 October 2009 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not the biggest hip-hop fan around (by any stretch). But I think GhostFace is maybe/probably the best album artist of the decade. Up through the new disc (which I haven't heard), you can't go wrong sampling his songs, e.g., Shakey Dog, Walk Around, the first non-skit song from the Ironman album (title escapes me).

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 October 2009 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

Sorry if those aren't "singles," per se. I listed what I know/recall.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 October 2009 18:55 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I like Ghostface. Jellyfish and Walk Around are some of my favorites of his.

Moka, Friday, 9 October 2009 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, Jellyfish is great, too.

Daniel, Esq., Friday, 9 October 2009 19:06 (fifteen years ago)

Oddly enough I do understand and get most of the lyrics when listening to artists like Madvillian or Ghostface Killah. So asides having a wicked production in their songs I love their lyrics.
Must be they sound like they're stoned most of the time which makes it easier to understand them since they speak slower.

Moka, Friday, 9 October 2009 19:09 (fifteen years ago)

2009 Nominee, Best African (Whitey on the Moon), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 02:49 (fifteen years ago)

FWIW I could have easily put Fishscale and maybe even Pretty Toney on there, but Supreme Clientele is already there and I wanted to give some other rappers some shine. I know I have 2 albums each from Daft Punk and Radiohead, but in both cases they seem like such different records, both essential in their own way. I think LCD SS deserves a spot too, but I couldn't decide on one. I think 43:55 is my favorite, but it doesn't seem like enough of an ALBUM, y'know?

2009 Nominee, Best African (Whitey on the Moon), Wednesday, 14 October 2009 02:58 (fifteen years ago)

the Coup album is a nice (and unexpected) pick.

hatchet, axe and saw supervisor (CaptainLorax), Sunday, 18 October 2009 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

Man I want to make a singles list, but it's gonna be so tough! There are just a ridiculous number of songs I love from the last 10 years, just in hip hop alone! Not nearly as easy to quantify as albums IMO.

Likely my top pick though, a true all-time incredible classic, is "Le Retournille" by Sébastien Tellier. I hope it gets its due on the ILX poll (was it even on the Pitchfork list at all?)

Messed up. Richard Hawley's disc is Cole's Corner (The Ocean is the first single from it). What a fantastic disc, especially as summer fades into autumn.
