rolling pop in 2009 thread

I wanted to create a pop thread for 2009 that would cover pop music from everywhere, and not just the stuff lucky enough to hit the charts. i have less and less faith in PopJustice every time i read it so i am depending on the good people of ILM to steer me to some good stuff in 2009.

so what's happening this year? what should I be eagerly anticipating?

I'm kind of hoping to do that in Rolling UK Pop/Chart/"Few people would dispute that Elbow have given us the album of the year" Thread 2009 tbh - I don't want it to just be the same old shit it winds up being every year, though that's what'll happen.

As for what's happening... don't actually know, but I'm gonna start looking about ASAP.

looking forward to Shock Value 2, that's about it.

yeah last year there was a US charts thread with pop and a UK charts thread with pop, but I'd like to have both of the pop elements, including stuff not related to charts in here. ILX threads have a way of working themselves out...we'll see...

will be keeping an eye on this thread, though not if it turns into the repository for popjustice-style pop (love peter but really his taste is like an anti-litmus test for me). k clarkson is a good start, had forgotten about her entire existence but her last album was underrated.

I think we'll all do better if we just close the body bag on Popjustice and just move on.

"just dance" is such a banger

the lyrics are so great too - lost phone, can't remember the name of the club and it's not even that great - she's forgetting everything via dancing but the song doesn't throw it in your face

i haven't looked up the credits yet but there is no way that akon didn't write that o donnis verse - the cadence is exactly like akon writes

Yeah, took me several times hearing it to realize it wasn't Akon. I kinda hate that song, but w/e, this isn't really my thread.

i think Akon actually is singing backup on that song, but yeah it sounds like he also wrote that weird-looking dude's voice. wtf is this song, it got to #2 on the Hot 100? i've heard it like 3 times.

i am grateful for the 'Just Dance' acapella i found on slsk. sounds great over the Kris Menace remix of Moby's 'Ooh Yeah'.

they were a pretty solid singles band for a while there but wooooooow that new one is awful...i'm sure you couldn't find an embeddable version of the actual music video but really worth seeking out to see how bad it is

haha, yes, we have two pop stations here, and i've heard both stations playing it at the same time TWICE this week.

the radio down here has started to play a "just dance" remix with kardinal offishal. his verse is awesome. i always kind of liked that dude but i was pretty turned off by his akon single

gaga is inescapable here too - every station is playing her except the hardcore rap/r&b one

re the rejects song. i don't think it's their best song by any means but i like it cuz of its goofiness. im not usually a proponent of championing a song cuz it's "fun, man!" but it really is a fun song, from the "gives you hell" instead of "give you hell" part to the stadium singing part to the weird for the rejects instrumentation. im not buying it form itunes any time soon but i like it

i think part of my problem is that i don't even understand the phrase "when you see my face I hope it gives you hell" enough to process it as a chorus that repeats over and over and over

I love the Lily Allen song ("The Fear") and it's really only made better by the fact that I wasn't expecting another good track from her ever.

it does sound like a smash hit, but more in the sense of "it sounds like 12 other Max Martin/Dr. Luke tracks that were already smash hits" than being really immediately irresistible.

i think "just dance" is an all time banger but i dont know if i care much about gaga herself. i think the song is extremely well-written in terms of getting across the feeling of being really fucked up and not caring about anything but dancing. you don't really hear lyrics as straightforward as "I love this record baby but I can't see straight anymore/ Keep it cool, what's the name of this club?/ I can't remember but it's alright, a-alright" on pop radio and i think that's the song's biggest strength, esp. compared to awfully generic shit like "hot n cold" and "womanizer"

also i STILL can't get with 'my life would suck without you' - the verses are ok but i've heard them maybe 50 times already on sundry dr luke productions from sugababes to paris hilton, and the chorus is somehow both too much (so blarey) and too little (so lazily written). but then i think my december was way underrated - the best tracks on it ('hole', 'never again', 'one minute') are better than anything on breakaway. and also REALLY HOOKY - i can't believe all the people whinging about how it was too dark and difficult couldn't hear those tracks' huge, huge hooks.

i'm glad 'diva' was chosen as the single - i really assumed it'd just be an album curio at first. female r&b has been missing that kind of swagger lately (ciara's insistence on releasing lovelorn ballads and midtempo grooves instead of her own swagger tracks as singles hasn't helped.) if it really was beyoncé's decision that's even better - she's beyoncé fucking knowles, i am glad she sees herself as beyond such concerns as "would this sound better amid tired refried lady gaga electro and kelly clarkson desperately trying to prove she's still fun".

(yeah, the only single i hear left on the beyoncé side is 'broken hearted girl', though 'disappear' is my favourite.) i never heard the demo of SOL that brainwasher prefers, but i love the album version so much that i don't want to - it doesn't sound like an obvious single but i think it would definitely stand out enough to catch people's ears - it's so ridiculously rococo. tbh by the time you get to the 5th single off an album, its predecessors should have done the heavy promo lifting already. can just imagine beyoncé running frantically around an empty versailles, dressed in full regalia, for the video.

i think releasing another pair of singles might be overkill though...certainly in the UK, where only one-by-one really works. i think it's one of Wayne's best recent guest appearances, and obviously any song w/ him on it right now is going to get a leg up in airplay right off the bat. but Wayne's been on a lot of singles in the past year that haven't done as well as "Turnin' Me On," so you gotta assume that the singer and/or the song are the variables. if Keri's going to do well at this point it's obviously going to be kind of a slowly growing series of hits, more like say Keyshia Cole's first album than the way Ciara got a smash right out of the box. is there any word of what Keri's next single will be yet?

i think this is fucking terrible in every which way (heard it today on the bus back from work site, but thankfully 'single ladies', 'my life would suck' and 'whatever you like' were on also, which we all sang along to), but i'm curious too see what a sarge thinks of it

eh i think it's alright, i kind of hate the idea of emo bands throwing stock synth lines into all their songs, but i can't deny that it works really well when the chorus opens up. it's basically just a teenpop song, and, like metro station, it would sound better if miley cyrus was singing it. to me it sounds like what clarkson/max martin etc trying to do with "my life would suck without you" except that song just seems so belabored to me, where as "don't trust me" is just some kids with one good idea (a chorus). i wasn't exactly pining for a fake metro station but this song turned out to be pretty decent, but it's not like i want a fake 3OH!3, or any more real 3OH!3 for that matter

it's sandwiched between MTV Hits and MTV Jams on my cable system so I pass over it channel surfing a lot...usually they're playing Mind Of Mencia but occasionally I see a video.

Heard Lonely Island's "I'm On A Boat" on local commercial radio today. This shocked me. Stations here play hardly any non-Flo Rida, non-Eminem, non-T.I. rap, and they play this?

i think i knew the first time i heard it when i bought the album and flipped through the credits...don't LOVE the song but i like it and it's growing on me...i assumed the KP version would at least be of the caliber of "Hot N Cold" performance-wise but wow that's pretty rough.

katy perry's version is def...different. i hate the verses but the chorus is kind of great

song is a total monster and 1 millionx better than any of her singles- quite the turnaround to "i kissed a girl" tho

i don't get why any of you love 'i do not hook up' so much. it's marginally better than 'my life would suck...' but suffers from pretty much exactly the same flaws. there are a couple of songs i like on the clarkson album but the whole thing hangs so heavy with its shiny happy FUN that i just can't be bothered.

i don't love it either, it's a fun song and i won't mind hearing it on the radio but i'm not excited by it. same goes for "my life would suck," actually. kelly is usually good for some totally amazing songs so i imagine when i finally pick up her album i'll find some.

'i do not hook up' is beyond bad :(
