i picked this up at last. it sounds quite rough, and the singing is not great, but there's some beautiful stuff on there. i like it quite a lot, it's definitely recommended (track 2 in particular is a treat.)

I had three (all?) Bedhead albums back in the 90s-early 00s, thought all of them were fantastic if a bit indistinguishable - ultimately, I think you only really need one. Which one, I guess, might be up for debate. I seem to recall really like Transaction de Novo so it's surprising to see some resistance to that album in this thread. Then again, it's been at least eight years since I've listened to any of their albums, so maybe I'm misremembering. I've been a little wary of going back to Bedhead after all this time; I fear they won't have aged very well.

It's actually been the opposite for me. I was afraid they would sound dated, but when I threw Beheaded on recently, I was all "fuck, these guys were even better than I remember"

Codeine were aggressively slow, with a lot more dynamic shifts (The White Birch, at least - there's another album I loved ten years ago but kinda fear hearing again). Bedhead never ever got loud. The drumming was extremely simple, almost nonexistent; the (three) guitars were very soft and all intertwined with each other; the vocals never really went past a whisper.

Bedhead never ever got loud. - Wasn't there a song or two on Transaction de Novo where they rocked out a bit, or at least used a distortion pedal? Though I own it, I probably haven't listened to that record in 7-8 years, though I remember really liking it in 1998. The Bedhead tunes I keep handy to put on mixes and such are "Bedside Table" and the cover of "Believe" (played on a touchtone phone!) - that seems to be just about all the Bedhead I require in my life at present, though I think I'll go dust off TDN just to make sure.

Re: Codeine vs. Bedhead - Stylistic differences aside, I recall Bedhead being more pensive in their slowness, whereas Codeine was just fucking soul-crushing, but in a really beautiful way.

Just bought Transacion De Novo the other night. Damn, it's like a sleeping bag made of Joy Divisions. Far and away my favorite.

I wish these guys came back. Matt and Bubba apparently started a band called Overseas with a guy from Pedro the Lion and another dude. Album out earlier this year. Anyone heard?

used to like them a lot back in the day, but after revisiting recently, I find their songs far too conservative-- in a way other similar bands like Labradford and Stars of the Lid weren't. I hate to say it, but I don't find much of substance in their music anymore.

Just checked out a tune called Down Below on YouTube. Didn't bring the Kadane-family magic, IMO. But yeah, will look further into them.

In that respect, the Kadanes (especially in Bedhead) have more in common with first gen slowcore bands like Low, Codeine. Maybe not Red House Painters, though.

Me too. But that song always remained particularly special. When I discovered it the straightforward angsty melodrama of other artists felt so much sillier. It got me to seek out and respect music that seemed to consciously restrain for overdoing this or that. Adds so much dimension.

They're not conservative, just disarmingly precise with their arrangements.

They are also very patient.

What I loved about watching Bedhead live was the way a guitarist would just sort of stand there idle for half the song until it was his turn to (literally) chime in.

I'd love a new New Year album. The last two were gold, even better than Bedhead in my book

I appreciate the restraint-- it's why I got into it in the first place. It just seemed like almost all of their songs follow a similar feel, a similar pattern. It's OK for a song or two, but gets very monotonous after a while. Like I said, I don't feel about saying that.

The last New Year album is so good, only Transaction de Novo being better in the Kadane catalogue in my view. Playing 'Folios' right now, first time in a good while. That song could go on for ever.

"I don't think the good years I've got can wait". That's a nice little memento mori, and sort of sums up the feel I get from this band. Like, live your little life, and do it well and good.

Huh, the think the first two Bedhead records are perfect, the third less perfect but full of some nice surprises and detours. The New Year I treat as an awesome echo. Even though it's a new band, it's also the same band, but different, and not quite the same sound as Bedhead but certainly the same vibe. When I saw the New Year live they were great. I once saw the Kadanes play as a duo and their sound even worked well like that.

Oh boy, excited here. I always feel like Matt Kadane is my cool-world alter-ego - also a Matthew K, a midcareer PhD academic teaching in a university, dark hair. It got a little out of hand when I bought a black Telecaster Custom, not my fault it was so good to play.

Duster has a lot of space-rock elements but also a lot of straight up slowcore indie tracks too that put those 2 bands together in my mind. Try the new one. Nonesuch also put out a career spanning comp not too long ago which is rad too.

There's a bit of a Bedhead vibe to parts of the (excellent) recent Peaer record.

Listening to the Overseas-record the Kadanes did with David Bazan and Will Johnson a few years. It’s not as controlled as Bedhead’s songs and, to a degree, more straight up indie. But it definitely has the guitars.

Yeah I really thought it was a recent band when it came on in the "recommended" after an album I was listening to.

The brothers K do that beautiful "amplified wires intertwining" dual-guitar clean tone so well, it's literally mesmerising to me. Never tire of those records and always seem to be emulating their guitar lines when I play,

i missed them when they were active but eventually listened to them due to the silkworm connection and they are so great and also so consistent. everything i've listened to has been great, they keep the same sound all the time (even on the new year albums) but find little nooks and crannies in that sound to mix things up.

I once played some Bedhead for an older friend of mine, and he was absolutely entranced, because it's so rare to hear a band focused on clean (Fender) guitar sounds, let alone guitars so intricately and clearly worked out. He kind of scratched his head over how they even wrote songs, because everything fit together so well.

Fun fact, Matt played drums on that one! I was emailing him for a while and mentioned it was my favourite Bedhead drum track (or maybe Half Thought), and he was pleased

Also altho I completely agree that their sound is the epitome of Fender clean tone, Bubba more often plays a Les Paul which surprised me. Matt’s Tele Custom is generally set to the neck pickup which is one of the early widerange reissues, basically a generic PAF style under the hood. So it’s generally humbuckers into Twin Reverbs.

It's been so long since I saw them play in any context, Bedhead or New Year or even just the brothers. What did the third guitarist play?
