OK, every other genre's rolling 2009 thread has posts now. Where are the "punk" (or non-indie underground) Rock posts? I'm sort of de-lurking myself (don't think I've posted on ILM since like 2005ish) to bump this thread up so I guess I should add some actual content. I've been listening to a bit of the Hudson Falcons recently (damn NJ influence). Anyone know if their newest album is any good?

i saw vampire hands do a stones cover set on new years eve, it was great!

Okay I'm trying to de-lurk myself too! But I don't have much to add to the thread so far. Does anyone know if Pissed Jeans are up to anything this year?

Haven't been buying/listening to much new shit lately, so I'm kinda out of the loop.
Right now I'm listening to Blue Sabbath Black Cheer, Endless Blockade LP from sometime late last year. I guess it could be punk?, but no, not really. Just a giant wall of horrible machine noise.
Recent Pink Reason split with Hue Blanc is excellent. Ummm...

my buddy just got the wavves 7" on tic tac totally, and shit is goo-ood. even better than the (sorta uneven, but great in parts) woodsist record.
― 69, Monday, 5 January 2009 15:44 (sixteen years ago)
Still not buying much 2009 rolling "punk" (or non-indie underground) "rock" records.
Newish Blank Dogs EP, The Fields, is a bit disappointing. Not terrible, but a solid step down from On Two Sides and the best of the singles. Couple good tunes, but mostly sounds like middling O2S outtakes. Similar production & tones, just second-tier tunes. I still rep for this band massively, but am kinda bummed that this is probably gonna hit more ears than anything else they've done, what with Woodsist hype in the air.
Coconut Coolouts 45 on Florida's Dying has awesome A-side, "We Drink Blood". Maybe too goofy for the Rusted Shut loving likes of ILM punk thred.
After much struggling, have turned the corner, re: greatness of Black Time. Did not want ITR LP I heard a year or two ago, but recent Skulltones 45 is fantastic, especially on long flipside "Doomsday Parade". Less garage, more indefinable post-ponk.

i agree about the fields in a way, contenderizer -- i think im just very excited for the 2LP coming out, with its alt-vocalists and promised diversity-of-approach. dont get me wrong, i really really like just about all the blank dogs songs he's done to this point, but broadening the palette is a great idea. i continue to approve of his trajectory, and i bet ill listen to the fields in a year, and itll sound just as good as the hozac 7" or on two sides.
― 69, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 14:43 (sixteen years ago)
wrt waaves, blank dogs, teenage panzerkorps etc...
i like all these bands, but the whole "in the red" recording style is getting a little old for me. i like a lot of these bands and think they have good songs and wouldn't mind a more trad recording approach.
― ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 17:10 (sixteen years ago)
Been listening to Meth Teeth and Eat Skull (and Blank Dogs) this week and yeah I kinda agree, I like these bands and obviously the lo-fi aesthetic is part of that, but when every song is recorded so everything is massively distorted it takes away the impact.

The recorder grot thing is weird. There are times (bands, records, songs, moments) when I think it is thee shit, makes perfect sense, sounds fantastic (recently: 1st Siltbreeze der TPK & TNV records, most Dank Blogs, lotta that Columbus Discounts), but as a blanket style laid over a whole scene, it gets annoying. Love Eat Skull, but a lotta their shit is just totally unlistenable unless I'm in the right mood. That fucking Skulltones EP, for god's sake. Same for Psychedelic Horseshit and subsequent piles of TNV. Especially frustrating when a really killer hook or arrangement is reduced to a bad, blurry blind-drawing of itself for the sake of aesthetic politics.
I like the Hospitals approach, where it still sounds no-fi, but you tell can tell they put some thought and effort into sculpting distinct sounds.
― Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 17:45 (sixteen years ago)
yeah like when dig yourself came out it seemed pretty awesome like real refreshing...and i do like these bands, love on two side a lot...it's just getting to be overkill IMO
― ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 17:58 (sixteen years ago)
im totally still ok with it LOL
― 69, Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
Agre about overkill with the lo-fi. That Eat Skull ep really put me off getting the LP, actually. Maybe unfairly. Although I finally got hold of the Sic Alps record, and they've really got the fidelity right. It just sounds nice and dusty without losing the fleshiness.
― hologram of balls (gnarly sceptre), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 18:09 (sixteen years ago)

― gnarly sceptre
OTM, re: Sic Alps, but you really oughtta check out the Eat Skull, even in spite of me saying bad things. Starts out harsh (tho not as harsh as Meds etc.), but gets really damn good as it goes on. Not saying you neeeed it, but listen to it at least, maybe even skipping the first few tracks. Never less than noisy, but they often back off enough to let the songs work.
― Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)
That Oh Sees 'Master's Bedroom' album from last year seemed like a good example of how to step away from ultra-distorto production and not lose the essence of what you had
― Pescetarian Reich (DJ Mencap), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 19:16 (sixteen years ago)
^ another good example, though I think the previous Oh Sees did a good job of it, too (relative to Coachwhips/other Dwyerses).
― Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)
i should recheck sic alps...i saw them live once and i was really hyped and i guess live it just came off as some sort heavyish 2 man bluesy stuff...like not near as far from i dunno black keys or something as i thought it would be...are the records weirder?
― ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
In that they sound NOTHING like 2man blues shit ala black keys, yeah, totally. Some older stuff is kinda on the fucked up folky noize tip, like whispy melodies under lo-fi J&MC gnarl. Mold weed crud etc. Some newer stuff is kinda On Sees-ish, with Nuggets vintage rock action mixed in for extra pep. Not really retro, but with toes in distant waters. Pleasures & Treasures is real good, as is Description of the Harbor, former with teh former sound, latter with the latter. Recent U.S. EZ kinda tends back to the hazy, mellow, but with killer tunes and lotsa detours.
― Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 19:46 (sixteen years ago)
yeah it just coulda been the night i saw 'em....i have tons of friends that love the shit out of them....
they seemed like they were in a sorta "jammy" mood and it just sorta chugged along on some classic rock type riffs for long periods of time...but who knows could have been an atypical show or something
― ie: BANGING (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 19:48 (sixteen years ago)
Dunno about the live show THB. Could suck for all I know. I did see the Black Keys one time, before I'd heard the Big Come Up, and was totally confuzed about why all these otherwise normal-looking people were grooving to this totally average (and kinda cringe-phoney sounding) rehash blooze rock hooey. Made it subsequently impossible to enjoy the albums, tho Come Up is inoffensive. Not that this has anything to do with anything...
― Calling All Creeps! (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 January 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)
the gary war album sounds like a dude biting haack but trying to make music that still fits into the nu-fuzzy aesthetic

I quite like that this verson of the LP has two extra tracks they wanted on there but took off at the suggestion of Jello Biafra, even though he had nothing to do with the album - lol early 80s

This weekend I get to choose between seeing Finnish HC legends Riistetyt or Japanese noisecore "homage" the Wankys. I'm erring towards the latter at the moment (listening to their I Got Vasectomy demo ATM)

I was surprised to find a few different Sex Vid singles in a punk shop in Camden recently. Didn't know Camden kept up with that sort of thing. It's southeast of the station, just off Camden Street, but I'd never come across it before, despite living round the corner. You been there, Mark?? Also some Homostupids, Carbonas, etc. I bought the reissue of the Die Kreuzen Cows & Beer 7".
― hologram of balls (gnarly sceptre), Wednesday, 14 January 2009 10:50 (sixteen years ago)
Would that be All Ages Records? If so yeah I've been there. It's OK but a bit pricey.
There's a distro in London that sometimes has a stall at punk gigs that has the Sex Vid stuff, amongst other things, they probably supply All Ages or something.

La Vida Es Un Mus is rad and cheap. I think Paco who runs it is booking Sex Vid for the UK this year but unsure how concrete that is right now. All Ages is something to do w/ the Household Name label if i'm remembering right?

Caught Finnish hardcore pioneers Riisteyt playing in Henry's cellar bar week before last, and they totally tore the roof off. (No mean feat in a cellar!) Packed the place out with old-school crusties. Mad mental moshpit - someone was crowd surfing in a venue with about 18" of headroom. I went clanking off home with stray studs stomped into the soles of my engineer boots. Don't miss 'em if you get the chance.

They aren't using sheet music anymore (haven't seen them in awhile, so I don't know if that's a recent development or not), and the sounds the guitarist got out of his amp were just ear-piercingly high...in the best way possible.

woah this is kinda crazy, the Guardian UK wrote a little thing on Baby Guts, a band on the same label as my band...anyway they are great folks and a great band (the vivian girls reference in the article is kinda dumb though, baby guts is way more horsepower than that)

― crackers is biters (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 30 January 2009 18:10 (sixteen years ago)
This kind of thing is why we have the Guardian zing threads Matt... tunes are pretty fine on initial exposure but the fact that Vivian Girls are mentioned in any way says a lot of things about a lot of things
― Peter Andre Test Tube Babies (DJ Mencap), Friday, 30 January 2009 18:42 (sixteen years ago)
yeah i don't really know the guardian, but it seems lame like "hey let's just mention another girl band"...even though baby guts is 2/3rd male anyway
but yeah it's amazing they got mentioned at all, our label is super small and they def sell records in the 100s and 10s not the 1000s.

Is there any musical difference between the 2 editions of this Johnny Vomit & the Dry Heaves single? Or is it just a different sleeve or something?

Saturday, April 25, 4 pm, $12 adv, $15 door. All Ages.Disembodied (Reunion!)Coalesce (Kansas City, MO)Veil of Maya (Chicago, IL)Architect (Syracuse, NY)Frontier (MN)
*Influential 90s Metal HC band Disembodied is back. We asked them to play a local show before they head out of town to headline the sold out Burning Fight Book Release show in Chicago. They've put together a great lineup of bands to join them, so this show should be a memorable one.
Wednesday, May 27, 5 pm, $15. All Ages.Amebix (UK)MiseryWarplague
*80s UK Peace Punk/Metal legends Amebix are back and as amazing as ever. Recently played a series of sold-out dates in the US to rave reviews. We got them to play one of only a few dates in the US this time around! Of course, locals Misery and Warplague round out a great bill!
Saturday, May 30, 5 pm, $10 adv, $12 door. All Ages.Skitkids (Sweden)Assrash (Reunion!)Living HellDetonate
*The Skitkids are definitely one of the best active HC bands in the world and we are bringing them in for their only show in the Midwest! Mpls ragers Assrash are back as well--reunited for the first time since the 90s! Living Hell and Detonate--some of Mpls' finest will kick your ass as well!
Friday, July 10, 5 pm, $10 adv, $12 door. All Ages.The Kids (Belgium)The Daily Void (Chicago)The Retainers
*Getting the Kids is very exciting for us here at EN. True legends of the late 70s Euro punk scene, the Kids first LP is a masterpiece of KBD melodic punk. They played a few shows in the US last year and blew everyone away. We got them for their only Midwest date. Chicago's Daily Void (ex-Functional Blackouts) have a slew of 7"s and a great LP out and will surely be amazing. Local faves, The Retainers will rock the house after just releasing a fantastic new LP on PTrash Rec in Germany.
Saturday, July 11, 5 pm, $10 adv, $12 door. All Ages.Tragedy (Portland)Condominium
*We talked Tragedy into stopping for a show on their way to a tour of Finland and Russia. These guys have defined modern HC for years and always blow everyone away. This will be there first appearance in MN in a couple of years. Condominium are one of the Twin Cities' best HC bands and are not to be missed!

Didn't know Amebix were playing again. Think I'll be catching them at the Camden Underworld.
― Lemurian commode (gnarly sceptre), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 16:19 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah I got a ticket for the Underworld show.
I also got a Teenage Jesus & the Jerks ticket last night - they're playing somewhere called Corsica Studios in April.
― I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 17:39 (sixteen years ago)
amebix played here last month w/ morne and kylesa, the crusty kids were in crust heaven
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 17:58 (sixteen years ago)
new oh sees is nice if you like oh sees
― congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 17:59 (sixteen years ago)
saw aids wolf last week - not sure they belong here but their new stuff is more driving and rocking then what I've heard previously
― 鬼の手 (Edward III), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 18:01 (sixteen years ago)
I like Oh Sees.
I also like Kylesa but don't think they're supporting Amebix in Europe. They weren't even supporting them in LA, I was going to attempt to see them when I was there but couldn't get a lift - this was before they announced the London gig.
― I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 17 March 2009 18:07 (sixteen years ago)
yeah yeah i like oh sees too! i think imma see em next week. gotta grab that LP.
― 69, Tuesday, 17 March 2009 18:08 (sixteen years ago)
So apparently the Avengers LP is finally getting a legit reissue - I already have the orig LP but the CD is a 2 disc version - anyone know what the bonus tracks are?
― I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Wednesday, 18 March 2009 10:42 (sixteen years ago)
I also like the new Oh Sees. Is it less "crisp" than the last one, or is that the quality of the mp3s I got sent?
― Jouster, Thursday, 19 March 2009 09:14 (sixteen years ago)
blank dogs were like really really good last night. i love all the records, but i was not expecting their live set to be as good as it was.
naked on the vague sounded rad, but quit after two songs cause they had some problems w the sound :(
brilliant colors and nodzzz ruled it too. very excited to try again with naked on the vague tonight, see blank dogs again, and finally see dutchess and the duke!
― 69, Monday, 30 March 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)
i <3 dutchess and the duke, listen to that record all the time
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 30 March 2009 19:02 (sixteen years ago)
new oh sees is less fuzzy than the last one which I don't think helps it
― cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Monday, 30 March 2009 19:05 (sixteen years ago)
but the live show is great, the main dude makes cool faces and shit
^^ ha ha! You should see the faces Dwyer makes when he plays jazz. Priceless!

Shameless plug...Hue Blanc's Joyless Ones and Pink Reason did live sets for my radio show today. The archive is at http://wnyu.org/2009-03-30_newafternoonshow
The set starts a little after the one hour mark.
― jonathan - stl, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 04:27 (sixteen years ago)
blank dogs were a little worse last night than the night before, naked on the vague gooooood but sort of annoying with their WE KNOW YOU THINK WE'RE UNLISTENABLE SCHTICK YAWWWWWN. dutchess and the duke played in the middle of the crowd with no amps/mics. which, fine. was cool, but, like, a tip too precious for my tastes. just plug in, dudes! but they sounded really great. the duke truly has an A+ voice (is that too GAY to say in the 2009 rolling "punk" (or non-indie underground) rock thread???).
― 69, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 17:29 (sixteen years ago)
does anyone like the bedroom-y oh sees stuff better than the rockier stuff?
― 69, Tuesday, 31 March 2009 22:11 (sixteen years ago)
whoa why did i sleep on that spider bags 7"?????? "hey delinquents" is one of the songs of the year.
― 69, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 16:56 (sixteen years ago)
going to see the blank dogs this wed w/white mice, excited
― d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 16:57 (sixteen years ago)
i saw one solid A blank dogs show last week, and one B- show. it's rad to see the squelchier songs take on a roxy music-like live rock groove!
― 69, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 17:05 (sixteen years ago)
is this where we talk about eat skull? anyone heard the new one yet?
― prostitutes all over the place (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 17:08 (sixteen years ago)
Blank Dogs playing in the UK in May, got ticket for Madame Jo Jos in Soho. Which isn't the best venue but the other gig I've seen listed in London is at Barden's Boudoir which is even worse.

― 69, Tuesday, 7 April 2009 17:17 (sixteen years ago)
Barden's is better than Madame Jojos on White Heat night!
― CosMc (Raw Patrick), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 19:02 (sixteen years ago)
True but I'm not planning to stick around afterwards anyway. And I work in Soho so it's more convenient.
― I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)
saw the blank dogs last night
technical gear difficulties + lead singer being broken up with by gf via text message right before the show = disappointing and sort of lifeless set.
― d20 riot tard (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 9 April 2009 22:44 (sixteen years ago)
i really couldn't fucking stand white mic either. that whole locust shit seems played out IMO.
uh oh that xpost is shocking rolling "punk" (or non-indie underground) rock thread gossip

According to his twitter, Jay Reatard's new album is done. I'm looking forward to that.
(Does being on Matador now mean he isn't non-indie underground?)
― Jouster, Friday, 10 April 2009 20:17 (sixteen years ago)

guys that eat skull is really disappointing. i've tried like three times but none of the songs are sticking...i loved Sick to Death
― k3vin k., Friday, 10 April 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)
whoa really?? all the talk ive heard is that its the best thing of the year, and like 10x as good as StD!
i hear its a little less over-the-top with distorto and weirdo stuff, but that the tunes are great! i saw them the other day, and they havent changed their live approach much...

new sacred bones singles are A++ -- nice face and timmy's organism (human eye dude, better than the newest HE album) are fucking rad. naked on the vague is very very good also, but like a step-and-a-half below the other two (mostly cause no real surprises on theirs).

okay this is important: the bitters (http://www.myspace.com/bittersband) are on the blank dogs label and have written some seriously amazing tunes.
― samosa gibreel, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 02:16 (sixteen years ago)
^^ I CAME ON HERE TO POST THAT. kudos to mr blank dog for picking good releases that dont all sound like blank dogs!
the whole bundle is pretty great, especially the beets LP and bitters 12". mayfair set fails to live up to either blank dogs or dum dum girls, havent heard the tapes yet, and havent gotten to blessure grave or woods either...
― 69, Sunday, 19 April 2009 03:15 (sixteen years ago)
also, saw ty segall and thee oh sees last night (left before the intelligence, oh well, so much for ever getting them). ty segall was really really good and cute, lotsa snotty ramalama energy (like the traditional fools' stuff, no surprise) and a pretty good band. but oh man i love thee oh sees, and they just kind of blow everyone else off the stage for me. john dwyer makes me really really glad i moved to SF.
― 69, Sunday, 19 April 2009 03:24 (sixteen years ago)
beets & the woods are my faves. kids from the beets are seriously amazing. like, real fucking punks who dress like the ramones and are really fun-loving dudes.
― ian, Sunday, 19 April 2009 03:27 (sixteen years ago)
I know this is completely anathema to the entire rolling pun-derg-rock ethos, but does anyone know of a site that sells a lot of this stuff digitally? I know that mp3 rips of lots of 7"s float around, but does anyone sell the stuff straight up? Would that be a totally doomed business from the start, since the whole point is super limited 7"s and stuff?
Anyway - I've been digging the Savage Boys and Girls Club album on In the Red and the Wax Museum album on... I can't remember.
― Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Sunday, 19 April 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)
I was asking about the digital thing because I am obsessed with this one tune - "On Top of That Girl" by Sweet Faces - after grabbing ift from some blog. But the rip is terrible, I don't have a turntable, and I would love a clean copy of it. But I don't know who to give my money to... and I would love to check out a bunch of this other stuff, too.
― Shannon Whirry & the Bad Brains, Sunday, 19 April 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)
wow the bitters are nice! way more 60s garage feel but def digging it

http://www.myspace.com/wethemeans
^^^check this band...Cool Devices...out of Chicago, used to be the Means, but anyway really nice...sort of garagey organs but not in a retro 60s way, way more mean and screamy, like in the Skull Kontrol vein...or Tar if they were hep cats or some shit...anyway really fucking digging this, recorded at Electrical Audio, frankly it's nice to hear some shit that doesn't sound like it was recorded in a tin can these days.
also, this is way more on the Sonic Youth late Unwound tip, but some people I know from Mpls have a fucking GREAT new band called Whitesand/Badlands....honk if u luv art rock:
― 4,000 hoes in blackburn, lancashire (M@tt He1ges0n), Thursday, 23 April 2009 15:53 (sixteen years ago)
wow cool devices are pretty awesome.
i checked out more of whitesand/badlands, because it was hard for me to judge them by that one song. they've got a few more up here: http://whitesandbadlands.blogspot.com/ which aren't as good IMO. i like them ok. i can definitely hear unwound in their music.
― borntohula, Thursday, 23 April 2009 17:23 (sixteen years ago)
Thee Oh Sees "Help" is really strong. Maybe even more than Master's Bedroom, which very gradually became a favorite last year. The harmonies are up front more than ever, pushing it closer to pop than Dwyer's yet gone. Nice companion to the Hunches record in a lot of ways- a balance of noise and jangle and hooks.
― bendy, Thursday, 23 April 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

is it different from the Yardbirds song of the same name?
― dmr, Friday, 24 April 2009 19:51 (sixteen years ago)
It is a different song. The Yardbirds one has the chorus that goes "Come tomorrow..." and the Max Frost song goes "Nothing can change the shape of things to come" and yeah, it was in a Target ad.
I've got a copy of the Wild in the Streets soundtrack lp. Shape of things is the best song, but "52 percent" is noteworthy. It's a pop song outlining Max Frost's campaign platform for the presidency. I guess it goes along with "14 or fight." The movie is great. Richard Pryor, Shelley Winters, Ed Begley, psychedelic concentration camps for all Americans over the age of 40. You gotta see it.
― Trip Maker, Friday, 24 April 2009 19:59 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I like the new Oh Sees record, btw.
― Trip Maker, Friday, 24 April 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)
Oh SeesI think the Target/Wes Anderson OST'ish of it is great. The harmonies seem intentionally wussy, yet so out of focus (and sung in that squirrel register) that is their eeriest yet. It's like the Moody Blues, if they actually tried to sing their spoken intros. Underwater.
― bendy, Friday, 24 April 2009 22:44 (sixteen years ago)
Hey Matt, since you're in the Twin Cities—Do you remember a band called Faux Jean? Matching outfits, '60s revivalism, girl/boy singing? Both the Golden Triangles and The Oh Sees remind me of them, in that they both sound like what would happen if Faux Jean freaked out and recorded in an echo-y tin shack.

Saw GBH tonight in a teeny venue in the east end, the support bands were pretty lousy but GBH were fucking great and played pretty much everything I wanted them to, circumstances have always gone against me in seeing this band before, glad I finally got around to it.

new Tyvek album is pretty hot shit, goofy california raisin cover art notwithstanding
bought the Eat Skull "Wild and Inside" LP the same day, the first two tracks are pretty good (esp. Stick to the Formula) but it seems to fall way off after that, nothing's stickin with me

in conclusion: rad

How long do the World Is Lousy folks usually take to mail out a record? I ordered something from them about two and a half weeks back, and was wondering what their fulfillment usually looks like. (Maybe I'm spoiled because everything else that I've ordered after seeing it on the Rolling Undie threads has gotten here in, like, three days.)
― THESE ARE MY FEELINGS! FEEL MY FEELINGS! (I eat cannibals), Friday, 15 May 2009 17:56 (sixteen years ago)
that's not too extreme a wait - maybe email if yr order hasn't arrived in a few days? AR guy is a bro so if something's gone wrong i'm sure it'll be fixed
― pretzel walrus, Friday, 15 May 2009 18:14 (sixteen years ago)
Yeah, it's not an extreme wait. I've just ordered from, like, five different labels due to this thread, and have gotten used to it being there, like, the very next day. The first time it was surprising, by the fourth time, it's expected.
God, the internet has ruined my patience. I WANT MY GRATIFICATION INSTANTLY.

― S-Ban Hour Best Hit Parade (DJ Mencap), Monday, 18 May 2009 18:34 (sixteen years ago)
does deastro count in this thread? sort of an atlas sound-type project, lo-fi, big, busy drums, dream-pop vocals. the record is moondagger and i'm really digging it
― k3vin k., Monday, 18 May 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)
i get less and less sure what fits in this thread/category, but I've been listening to the Fresh & Onlys records like crazy recently. All so good (and more to come -- another LP on Woodsist and an ep on Captured Tracks this year), but so far the 4-song single on Chuffed gets the most play. Just a great distillation of that band in such a short burst.
plus that bitters record and world's lousy 8 are wonderful as well.
― city worker, Monday, 18 May 2009 18:44 (sixteen years ago)
yeah that bitters record is a+! it's a fucked up guy, right? i've never heard a fucked up song that's made me not want to listen to something else, but that one may have been my fave of the last set of captured tracks releases.
haven't heard the fresh & onlys stuff yet, though i've been curious.
haha yeah this thread is sort of amorphous but whatever, if it's good and has at least some shared punk dna i'm putting it here.

i think "non-indie underground" is what's really important, unless you don't mind "punk" being used as a catch-all term for noise, lo-fi and post-punk.
― samosa gibreel, Monday, 18 May 2009 22:20 (sixteen years ago)
I think a lot of this type of stuff as indie rock personally but the rolling indie thread is mostly just lame Arcade Fire nonsense so I'm happy to read this instead.
Think a lot of dudes on here might like my band's newest EP but feel kind of gross about posting it on here. You know where to find it if you want to hear it (on our website).

oh also i got a copy of a comp of vancouver stuff called emergency room (from 2008 i think) and aside from having a horrifically ugly cover and a swanky bound photobook inside the sleeve it is really good, like at least 70% excellent and the rest is never worse than "eh whatever." there are a lot of girls playing punk rock in vancouver!
― pretzel walrus, Friday, 22 May 2009 19:13 (sixteen years ago)
Tyvek s/t seems a little blah. It's good to see them blowing up, though (for some values of blowing up—ood to at least see blog chatter about them). I used to work with Kevin's older brother Trevor and got to see some of their first gigs. I'm glad they're still around, too, because I kinda expected them to flare up and then disappear like most Ann Arbor punk bands. (They made the wise decision to move the hell out).

they def went a different direction than an LP full of FUTURE JUNKs and AIR CONDITIONERs, but i think its a pretty awesome, and sorta complex, grower

Pitchfork even joining the Wavves backlash now. http://www.facebook.com/ext/share.php?sid=98348074168&h=HUk2V&u=Fhv9l&ref=nfI don't think the music warrants the harsh criticism he's gotten. Seems like an unfortunate side-effect of...something.
― Trip Maker, Friday, 29 May 2009 15:31 (sixteen years ago)
But I guess when your big festival set goes down the way that one did...
― Trip Maker, Friday, 29 May 2009 15:32 (sixteen years ago)
pitchfork does this shit on purpose IMO, like build something up to take it down later...like i "kinda" know a dude in Tapes n' Tapes from around and like they are super nice and all...but i swear Pitchfork pretty much singlehandedly made them, then when the next album dropped - right when they had a chance to sorta cash in maybe and do okay - pitchfork said it was just "okay" indie rock, well fuck that's what they always were you fucks! then they write about "former blog buzz bands" when they pretty much go out of their way to create the buzz in the first place...
they did the same shit to plastic constellations...
i think it's to demonstrate their value to advertisers, like we brought you into the world we'll take you out a la bill cosby's old line.

i dunno, like i thought they were just like an okay run of the mill minneapolis indie rock band. i thought they both seemed "fine" couldn't really tell why one was supposed to be so much better.
― i would never want a book's autograph (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 29 May 2009 16:02 (sixteen years ago)
i don't think a band like wavves having a slight meltdown onstage is really newsworthy!

― Trip Maker, Friday, 29 May 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)
An onstage meltdown at a big festival is a major component in becoming a major rock band; Pitchfork is probably helping out their bros by reporting this.
― congratulations (n/a), Friday, 29 May 2009 16:11 (sixteen years ago)
if pitchfork had reviewed the black lips before the live album they prolly would have had an article like "BLACK LIPS SHOOT FIREWORKS OFF ON STAGE, PLAY GUITARS WITH DICKS."

The Wavves Barcelona gig sounds significantly better than when I saw the Jesus and Mary Chain on their first UK tour - and that didn't really do them any harm.
― Soukesian, Friday, 29 May 2009 16:20 (sixteen years ago)
Pitchfork didn't cover that, though.
― Trip Maker, Friday, 29 May 2009 16:21 (sixteen years ago)
Oh by the way I saw these kids last weekend and they were great and they're all like 17 years old and they made me feel embarrassed for being 30 and still trying to play rock music when clearly it's for high school kids like them. So much energy, great songs, unison vocals on basically every tune. They only have a self-released 4-song EP so far, which isn't as good as they were live.
― congratulations (n/a), Friday, 29 May 2009 16:25 (sixteen years ago)
oh I guess they're 18 not 17
"a combination of a difficult soundcheck and absolutely foul moods resulted in what must have been the most epic onstage meltdown a band of their small size could conjure."
wavves are a b- band but seriously this kinda reaction makes me wonder if the writer's ever been to, you know, a punk show before. i mean maybe not!
― pretzel walrus, Friday, 29 May 2009 17:12 (sixteen years ago)

― pretzel walrus, Friday, 29 May 2009 17:14 (sixteen years ago)
i like the record enough but wavves has one of the worst live shows ever. i saw him a few times at sxsw and each time the sound was just awful, his voice shot and really he just seemed like he didn't know what he was doing. i definitely don't suspect he's an asshole or anything, but it's understandable that eventually something would go horribly wrong.
― samosa gibreel, Friday, 29 May 2009 18:57 (sixteen years ago)
Dude needs a soundman, maybe a guitar tech. The record is pretty damn good, shouldn't be that hard to get that sound live.

dead clodettes record on lipstick pickup (french girl band, incompetent shouty awesome)bundle of fags - art school asshole (plain ol punk rock, good tunes, catchy)i'd buy that for a dollar vol. 1 (comp, los steaks track is particularly enjoyable)fems - go to a party (reissue on drag city, sub-flipper, annoying-on-purpose bass plod)ean eraser - illegitimate love (punk/garagey powerpop, a-side is a real brainwormer)

...uhhhhhh oh right back to punk/"punk" stuff...
anyone heard the new pink reason/electric bunnies split?
― pretzel walrus, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)
@nnie's review of pink reason side:
song one: this sounds good except for that horrible organ! everything else sounds awesome, but god that organ. it sounds horrible. i feel weird. when is this gonna end?
song two: this sounds ok, but wheres the organ?
― 69, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)
electric bunnies side is more of their clattery sound, kind of trashy/junky. first song, i thought was incorrectly on 33 1/3 cause it sounded too slow. but then it turned out it was on 45. then it turned out it was supposed to be on 33 1/3.
ok so we were slightly intoxicated when we listened to this 7".
― 69, Wednesday, 3 June 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)
To reiterate - definitely Meaningless - the other stuff is good but that one is pretty much perfect all the way through.

Really digging the 13th Chime re-issue that just came out. UK death rock/post punk. Collects the singles & I believe a couple of unreleased cuts.
Also, Meaningless, yes. I wasn't aware it was still in print; haven't seen copies around lately.

There is a definite Country Teasers influence on display on the record. Not a bad thing at all, imo.
― Trip Maker, Monday, 8 June 2009 15:12 (sixteen years ago)
got the newest hozac bundle today!
as we speak, im putting on the smith westerns LP (and the first minute sounds good), but more about that later.
cave weddings 7" is awesome. sounds just like eric and the happy thoughts, which is unsurprising, because it's eric's other band. @nnie likes them more than i do normally, but this is a very good single -- simple not-too-wimpy super-catchy pop songs.
francis harold and the holograms is good and loud. it leaves me wanting to hear their previous 7", though, where the extreme noize was a little more like sculptural or something?? this is a little too diffuse to be great.
davila 666 is the surprise winner! i had never actually jammed them before, and now im psyched to hear the LP. nuggets en espanol, convincing 60s sound, poppy/wiry gtrs.
smith westerns LP sounds good so far too! crunchy like the hozac single, lotsa pop melodies, some chill lil t-rex swagga, etc. more later.

lol ok now all i can think of are punk bands using synths that i DO like (all them dudes above plus pere ubu, spider, chrome, dna, devo, six finger satellite, old devo blah blah) and if we count organs as synths then the whole thing's off so hey statement retracted
― pretzel walrus, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 00:21 (sixteen years ago)
...and Geza X. And the 90s had Men's Recovery Project and Primadonnas.
There were a ton of great synth-punk bands in the first half of the decade. I really liked disks from The Minds, The Epoxies and Jett Rink in particular. Piedmont Charisma and Ima Robot had some good stuff too. Digital Leather's record from last year wasn't solid all the way through, but "Styrofoam" might be the best song out of the whole trend.
― bendy, Wednesday, 10 June 2009 01:05 (sixteen years ago)
I wouldn't put Cheveu in the same category as all these bands you guys are talking about. Their songs are pretty dominated by guitar. I wonder of DJ Mencap went to the show?

I didn't go and see Cheveu - I knew I'd be the only person there that even had a potential interest in them (I only knew it was happening at all cos I compile listings as a job, and they were playing with two bands chosen entirely at random) and I'm finding it harder all the time to, you know, live for the music when watching bands struggle to enjoy playing terribly-promoted shows in front of no-one. (It's possible this didn't turn out to be the case, but it seemed especially unlikely.)
ANYWAY just quickly gonna revisit some dudes I repped for up top by mentioning that the Shitty Limits album is now out and now great, and I know they have their own thread but Pissed Jeans' new one has got some top-of-their-game gems (no idea if this is out there, I got it off a label stream)

re: pj, totally loved shallow, PU & sub pop singles, not incredibly familiar with hope for men ("a bad wind" is a killer tune but nothing else super-grabbed me; have to go back and listen again sometime), but i'm totally interested in a new record. live they've alternated between helllll yeah (69 and i drove up to philly a few years back to see them tnv and country teasers, it was way great) and ehhhhh yeah whatever (last time i caught them the INSANITY felt kinda forced and they weren't as pummeling as i wanted them to be)
― pretzel walrus, Thursday, 11 June 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)
Shitty Limits coming to my town next month, looking forward to it. Almost makes up for Wavves cancelling their entire Euro tour post-Primavera incident. Got to wonder if that would've happened if Pitchfork hadn't made a big deal of it.
Was also kind of bummed that I missed Experimental Dental School last month ('nother barely-promoted show I guess, on an inconvenient Sunday night) but their new album is completely lacking in everything I found promising-but-not-quite-there about their previous, so.
Country Teasers + TNV + Pissed Jeans is one awesome lineup! Jealous now.
(PS synths rule OK etc, this lurker mainly checks this thread for the synthpunk and organ-garage business)

― if you're a pizza-loving New Yorker, it was pretty hilarious. (DJ Mencap), Friday, 12 June 2009 14:39 (sixteen years ago)
Ha, I thought I'd stolen it but it was free anyway. Feel bad for bad words and for not turning up now, will give it further listens and hope that someone went to the gig so they might come back, but a Sunday night which didn't get plugged on the local music forum and didn't get reviewed in the local music sheet (actually pretty decent) = I suspect the place would've been empty.
Anyone who calls a track "Your Tears Are My Ice Cream" is ok by me, anyway.

If it was I'd probly be on here pimping my friends' bands but nah. If anything it might be attributable to them not really being sceney types... like there's a lot of twee indie kerfuffle round here sort of in the Los Campesinos slipstream, and there's always been quite a lot of punk and HC kids, but they or Mclusky never rilly had anything to to with that

Anyone familiar with any of these bands:
Logic Problem, Mob Rules, Black Time, Nowhere Fast and Ironclad
They're playing (along with aforementioned Shitty Limits) at an all ages show in London next weekend and I'm thinking of taking my 12 yr old nephew who's staying with us at the moment - his previous exposure to punk is Green Day and the Ramones but he's currently into Cradle of Filth & Cannibal Corpse, I think he'd probably still like a hardcore gig tho
― Colonel Poo, Friday, 3 July 2009 13:35 (sixteen years ago)
I'm seeing Logic Problem on Sunday, what I heard sounded good assuming you like the whole 1984 redux thing in the first place. Mob Rules are quasi-powerviolence from I think Leeds; their EP is really solid. Black Time had a record on In The Red if I'm thinking of the right band - didn't do a lot for me but I've heard a lot of ppl rep for them since. I know dudes in Ironclad a bit but haven't listened to them - I guess they do that sort of neo-youth crew HC that I don't often like all that much.
― Real Men Play On Words (DJ Mencap), Friday, 3 July 2009 13:44 (sixteen years ago)
assuming you like the whole 1984 redux thing in the first placeThis is a valid assumption.
I thought Black Time were a neo-garage band - kinda weird they're on this bill. I'm not hugely into the youth-crew era stuff. Although I do like some Youth Of Today, so who knows.
I think I'll take him to it tho, he's getting a bit bored I think. I've been playing him Napalm Death, Melvins, Darkthrone etc probably not music for the punk thread but I just wanted to show him there's better stuff than Cradle of Filth :)
― Colonel Poo, Friday, 3 July 2009 13:56 (sixteen years ago)
I guess I'm not expecting most folks on this to be thrilled by the idea of a UK band doing the Oxes/Don Cab/Shellac instrumental thing but I've been spending this evening listening to 'Tanknology' by That Fucking Tank
Oh hello! That'd be me, except 90% of the bands I saw from like 2003-2007 were this so a bit burnt out on it now... but since I have managed to see hardly any gigs this year and the local promoter who put on most of said shows has now decided that Justice synths + earnest Get-Capey post-emo vocals are the new thing, it's always nice to remember the good times
(Dug the last TFT album hard, which was kind of surprising since I'd seen them live and hated it. Might just've been grumpy because they were billed above Part Chimp, who were my pet favourite band of the time. Also I think the soundguy took a dislike to them and decided he didn't give a toss and wanted a smoke instead.)
Gave the Black Time LP a good few spins trying to convince myself I liked it, so something about it charmed me, but it seemed a bit thin. Would like to see them live in the hope that they'd be a little fiercer/darker than on record. Not so much "In The Red" as "tentatively considering a fresh coat of magnolia" or er something. (This is wildly unfair but what else to do with a horrible cheeseball line that sprung into my head and I have no other home for)
― a passing spacecadet, Friday, 3 July 2009 15:05 (sixteen years ago)
Pretty sure Tanknology is better than their last one although it's been a while so maybe I should revisit
― Real Men Play On Words (DJ Mencap), Friday, 3 July 2009 15:08 (sixteen years ago)
i like a bunch of black time stuff - the thing is that they have a few different sounds, and they kinda veer from one to the other from single to single and album to album. the one that does trashcan (rubbish bin?) shouty boy-girl indie garage punk is the one i like best, like the "dance party" 7", but the others have their charms as well, if not always the tunes. they have a ton of stuff to wade through but i like that 7", the new vague themes ep (which is an ornate one-sided 12" with an etched flipside, kinda ridiculous but also kinda awesome), and the newer ITR LP best. at gonerfest last year they were good not great, but i dunno how indicative that was of the typical live show.
black time side-band sexaphone has some fun stuff too if you have any <3 for bratmobile & ilk
― pretzel walrus, Friday, 3 July 2009 18:26 (sixteen years ago)
yeah rubbish bin'll do :)
I like some Bratmobile, sometimes they're a little too inept even for me tho
― Colonel Poo, Friday, 3 July 2009 19:00 (sixteen years ago)
haha yeah i hear you, totally.
also 69 i got my mayyors ep and yeah it is great!
other stuff i've been meaning to mention here:
davila 666 stuff (douchemaster 7", hozac 7", itr lp) is all pretty good imo! hooky puerto rican garage punk/greaser rock, reminds me in places of the first king khan/bbq album.
sneakers "children into people" 7" killin it for me. cave side project, kinda postpunky, propulsive/cutting/kinda funky drumming, catchy little rhythm riffs, reverbed spaced out vocals back in the mix.
sneaky pinks "i can't wait" 7" reissue - i love this song but there was no way in fuck i was gonna pay $60 for it on ebay so hey, thank you reissue, for making this dilemma no longer relevant.
ean eraser "illegitimate love" 7" - this is not really new (last year or so?) but i've been listening to it a bunch again so hey. punk song, y'know? verges on powerpop maybe a little but i love it and i don't really like powerpop at all. internet is super informative.
― pretzel walrus, Friday, 3 July 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)
"so hey" competing w/"7"" (whoa is that the proper punctuation? do you stick with a " if you're citing a measurement within a quotation or do you modify it to ' as you would when quoting speech?) for most-utilized tidbit in above post
― pretzel walrus, Friday, 3 July 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)
change the " to inch imho. 7-inch

Three listens in to Furture of the Left, and trying to hold up my jaw, and I'm not even that into 90s T&G. I really need to mull this over, but this set is kicking me way harder than anything McLusky ever did.
― bendy, Saturday, 4 July 2009 04:23 (sixteen years ago)
k so here are three incredible local (montreal) punk bands who have started existing really recently and are all three-way tied for my new favourite band ever.
dead wife (www.myspace.com/deadwifemontreal) play really perfect lo-fi, girl-fronted noise punk.
tonitix (www.myspace.com/tonitix) play really simple yet creative garage-punk, and every song fucking explodes.
ultrathin (www.myspace.com/ultrathinmtl) are on a more soupy, fuller sounding tip than dead wife of tonitix and are only thirds as fast but just as cool and worth while. also unlike the two other bands i mentioned they have actually released music! it is a split cassette with twin crystals (who sort of suck) out on cool montreal cassette label campaign for infinity (www.myspace.com/campaignforinfinity).
enjoy!

I'm seeing Logic Problem on Sunday, what I heard sounded good assuming you like the whole 1984 redux thing in the first place.
― Real Men Play On Words (DJ Mencap), Friday, July 3, 2009 1:44 PM (3 days ago) Bookmark Suggest Ban Permalink
Yeah this was pretty killer... just really fast and efficient and raw Die Kreuzen type swill. I'm not gonna pretend they're the band that'll change your mind if you think rehashing 80s HC is a waste of time but it was as on point as you can realistically expect. Shitty Limits were even better, had a great night basically. One of the Limits dudes has a label called Static Shock - bought a 7" on said label by Young Governor (newest member of Fucked Up IIRC) which is quite poppy retropunk, decent on first play
― Real Men Play On Words (DJ Mencap), Monday, 6 July 2009 22:14 (sixteen years ago)
I think I will probably go to that.
Rehashing 80s HC is no waste of my time :)
― Colonel Poo, Monday, 6 July 2009 22:16 (sixteen years ago)
anyone heard the new JR yet? it's kinda NZ'ed out in places, jingle-jangle electric and acoustic guitars and some keyboard stuff; reminds me of the bats. not really sure what i think so far...i didn't like it one bit on first listen but it sounds better today.
― pretzel walrus, Friday, 10 July 2009 18:18 (sixteen years ago)
I'm siked as hell to be among people where we don't even have to say Jay Reatard much less explain who that is but that did take me a minute I will say.
I like the album and can't say much constructive about it now other than there are some killer songs
― splashing out on some prospective meat (DJ Mencap), Friday, 10 July 2009 22:15 (sixteen years ago)
I didn't go to the Logic Problem gig in the end but might go down to see the Wankys tonight.
I just got hold of the new JR so haven't listened to it. Not sure how much I'll like it since I preferred Blood Visions to the more recent stuff.
― Colonel Poo, Saturday, 11 July 2009 10:18 (sixteen years ago)
Listening to 'Primary Colours' by Eddy Current Suppression Ring for the first time - getting a UK release on Melodic of all labels - pretty funny (if yr a bit lame) that the last thing they put out was on Iron Lung's label. Also it says here that they won the Aussie versh of the Mercury Music Prize! I like this though, v much into 80s postpunk indie territory
― splashing out on some prospective meat (DJ Mencap), Saturday, 11 July 2009 10:53 (sixteen years ago)

yeah this thread has alot of potential, i feel all we do though is pop up every few days to announce some new release but nothing ever really gets discussed at all/enough. anyways so this has leaked?
― samosa gibreel, Saturday, 11 July 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)
sometimes i think this thread gets a little too focused on the sorta garagey/neo-lo-fi axis of stuff....so..
Here's a big burly band from Chicago called The Brokedowns....sometimes they recall like um...Fugazi meets No Means No but with a dude from Pegboy singing...or something
playing a show with them on aug 1st in mpls should be cool! i'm kinda totally loving this shit right now

― gr8080 expectations (M@tt He1ges0n), Saturday, 11 July 2009 19:31 (sixteen years ago)
yo dudes, god bless this thread and all who sail with it, but yes, i agree that a) it can focus too heavily on the neo-lofi/bedroom stuff and b) we sometimes just note what we're listening to and then disappear. so up with people, discussion.
― pretzel walrus, Saturday, 11 July 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)
Thumbs up on the new JR. He's become a pretty great vocalist over the years, I noticed - a surprising amount of range/different moods on it.
― Jouster, Saturday, 11 July 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)
I guess it's not that surprising, now that I think of it - I guess just more noticeable when condensed on a 12 song album rather than spread over a ton of singles.
― Jouster, Saturday, 11 July 2009 20:27 (sixteen years ago)
i prefer jangly acoustic guitars & keyboards jay to punk jay - matador singles 08 is def my favorite release by him - so i have some pretty high expectations for this album and tbh it didn't wow me like matador 08 - no "see/saw" or "hiding hole" - but im willing to believe that it will grow on me because his songs are all sort of inconspicuous. the final few songs (and the rework of "i'm watching you") are great tho just like they were on matador 08. i reeeeally like the two singles too - esp "it aint gonna save me" which has an insanely catchy riff - so we'll see. i'm pretty much expecting to love it eventually.
― dropping knowledge bombs on digital culture (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 11 July 2009 20:34 (sixteen years ago)
the song where he sings like basically in falsetto is pretty awesome too
yeah i think "it ain't gonna save me" is a jam, tbh i was disappointed there weren't any other songs that hooked me as immediately. but as previously noted i'm liking it more now; i think it's a grower
― pretzel walrus, Saturday, 11 July 2009 20:39 (sixteen years ago)
also matt those dudes sound good, what's yr new band like?
― pretzel walrus, Saturday, 11 July 2009 20:40 (sixteen years ago)
I went to see the Wankys tonight - the predominantly crusty/leather, bristles, studs & acne crowd mostly left to the bar after War System played, there was only about 10 of us in the audience, but it was pretty great - if you like that 80s Japanese noisecore stuff like Confuse, Gai etc or new stuff like Lebenden Toten you'll probably dig it. The whole thing is done as a homage/pastiche of that stuff, even down to nicking the band name/logo/album title off the Swankys.
I'll probably listen to the new JR this week, still not sure if I'll like it but I was listening to that 7" with the Go-Betweens cover on it and I did like that stuff so maybe I can deal with him leaving the punk behind a bit.

― samosa gibreel, Monday, 13 July 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)
I think it's the best thing they've done on initial plays so yeah - says Aug 10 release here so I dunno if they'll have it with them (they should have 'Think' their 12" from last year, tho)
― At War With False Nose (DJ Mencap), Monday, 13 July 2009 21:29 (sixteen years ago)
Is there gonna be a Lovver / Lover throw down? I'll rep for the single v Lover.
― Trip Maker, Monday, 13 July 2009 21:37 (sixteen years ago)
single-v lover has some good stuff, yeah. haven't heard double-vversion.
back on board the "meh" train re: new reatard. it's ok, there are some chill tunes, but the single's the best song on there and too much of the rest just blahs around. and i liked most of the matador singles, so it's not the less aggro direction that's failing to connect.

Going to see Jello Biafra's new band tomorrow. I liked the stuff he did with the Melvins, I figure this new band will be along the same lines?
Some guy wrote an I Hate Jello article bashing him for playing DK songs with the Melvins, saying he claimed to write the DK songs and if he did then he should be able to write new songs instead of playing old stuff, conveniently ignoring the fact that he did 2 albums of new songs with the Melvins and er I haven't heard anything about the reformed Dead Kennedys writing any new songs...
― Colonel Poo, Monday, 7 September 2009 17:03 (fifteen years ago)
man, MOTHERFUCK the reformed dead kennedys. what's the new band? who's in it?
― samosa gibreel, Monday, 7 September 2009 17:05 (fifteen years ago)
New band is called the Guantanamo School Of Medicine and has various dudes from bands like Victim's Family and Rollins Band in it. Album's not out yet so dunno what it sounds like.
― Colonel Poo, Monday, 7 September 2009 17:08 (fifteen years ago)
the new reigning sound is predictably great!
damn though this is pretty mellow and 60s...but hell why not? dude's been around forever.
i can't think of anyone who can write good old fashioned rock n' roll songs like this and be this good at it. it's like they are instantly familiar and comforting but they don't seem predicable or lame either...or fakey. dude is mr. oblivion is a genius basically.

oh also got that 13th Chime singles comp reissue thing! good stuff...sort of reminds me of a less shouty/metallic early Killing Joke, but with a more funky bass thing like Gang of Four or something, but a goth Gang of Four
― i'm beasting off the riesling (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 7 September 2009 23:44 (fifteen years ago)
i think the Cultural Decay reissue LP (done by the same label, sacred bones, as the 13th Chime) is even better. Check it out if you see it 'round.
And yeah, new Reigning Sound is great. Greg is one of the most knowledgeable guys I know about sixties pop/garage/r'n'b and tbh i think part of what makes him a great songwriter is hisintimate familiarity with the sound he wants to create.

How was Jello, Colonel?
― Soukesian, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 19:59 (fifteen years ago)
I downloaded that 13th Chime thing, haven't listened to it yet tho.
Jello was pretty damn awesome actually. New stuff is along the same lines as the Jelvins and they played 5 Dead Kennedys songs, new lyrics for California Uber Alles about Arnie etc. Jello was stagediving into the crowd and came out covered in fake blood. Pretty much as good as I could hope for at this point in time. Also I didn't know who the support bands would be and they turned out to be Moral Dilemma & the Restarts, both of whom are nothing new or special but decent enough bands compared to most of the bands that tend to get booked to open for touring US bands these days. I'm looking at you, Dragster, Mike TV & Love & a 45.

Missed Eat Skull at the FYF (I was standing in line, I think). Still, Fucked Up, Mika Miko, Lightning Bolt, all pretty great. I crapped out halfway through No Age's set—it's weird how much backlash they seem to get from my pals here in LA, which seems totally undeserved. I mean, they're pretty much doing the same thing that they've always been doing, fuzzy punkish duo stuff, and you either like it or you don't. I dunno, maybe it's because I don't know them personally, but I was kinda shocked at the number of people who were like, fuck those guys, they're assholes.

Only time I saw No Age was after Jay Reatard and Times New Viking and I thought they were pretty mediocre, they have some good songs but I can't see getting excited about them.
― Colonel Poo, Saturday, 12 September 2009 00:03 (fifteen years ago)
Being old (at least for hipster punk rock) means that it's hard for me to get totally excited about anybody, but No Age has put on some pretty great shows. Like most bands that traffic in the heavy distortion fuzz, I think they do better in smaller venues; outdoors No Age loses a lot of sound that would normally be reflected back. I'd never seen Times New Viking before, and it was kinda funny how, I don't know, generic pop-punk they sounded without the fucked-up production. But they were pretty entertaining at least, much more so than The Thermals, who they were up against.
The only band that really has killed it for me live in a while was seeing The Oh Sees at The Smell, where their claustrophobic echo really played well with the horrible shotgun flat architecture of the venue. But I got ragged on for liking those guys too.
Then again, it amazes me that these same folks are totally fucking psyched about Har Mar Superstar, who seems like a third-rate Quintron (who's already Prince+Mental Illness).
I usually just put the blame on the mainstreaming of indie rock and the tendency to accept "quirky" in the place of "weird" or "disturbing."
― Giorgio Marauder (I eat cannibals), Saturday, 12 September 2009 06:29 (fifteen years ago)
You got ragged on for liking Thee Oh Sees? Fuck that, man, they're so great.
― Jouster, Saturday, 12 September 2009 06:32 (fifteen years ago)
Just catching up with Ghosts, but it more than just solid. It starts out fast and catchy, and I'm like, "hey!". Then about halfway thorugh, I'm all "hey this is getting louder and faster and catchier!". And by the last two songs I'm lying in the road with tire marks on my back going, "waurrrrghah". Their interlocking-gears guitar work is on the level of Hot Snakes/DLJ. Best Dirtnap since Busy Signals.
I like Oh Sees soo much better than any of the other echo-chamber shitfi stuff.

all his stuff is pretty solid IMO. castle face LP and goner LP are tight -- otherwise, theres an LP comp of singles/splits/cassettes, a few recent uncollected singles, and a split LP with black time. the perverts' (his other band) 7" is pretty good too!
― 69, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 23:14 (fifteen years ago)
I say start with the Castle Face LP, then move on from there. The Goner LP took time to grow on me, but almost all of his stuff is good.

Been forever since I posted here...
Started picking up Ty Segall stuff earlier this year on the basis of the Castle Face LP and that one Traditional Fools LP with the sunglass hamburgers on it. Horn the Unicorn & the Black Time split = crazy great, Lemons is growing on me. Saw him with Sic Alps and didn't even know it. Was super impressed though, cuz he's a better singer than primary Sic Alp (who's good and a nice guy besides, so no slam intended), and a MUCH better drummer than whoever does that job when Ty's up singing and playing guitar. Talked to him after and found out who he was. "Thailand" t-shirt shoulda maybe tipped me off... Saw him as himself w/ band at the Comet a few weeks back, and he was excellent. Slightly overshadowed by Jeff the Brotherhood, who were a total surprise.
Reatard's the best live show I've seen in the '09 (twice), along with Wooden Shjips, Shellac by far the worst (worsting even Wavves and Naked On the Vague, for which they deserve some kind of horrible medal).

man i've been meaning to post on this thread a bunch too. i just moved down to NC and we've been getting a ton of awesome shows over the last few weeks - saw the box elders at a house party (still haven't heard that record, though they're a kickass live band and the 7" rules), then the beets and airwaves the next week (beets were meh but i like their records too, airwaves were good stuff), and then last night another house party w/yussef jerusalem, thomas function and spiderbags, where everyone killed it. YJ did a burzum cover, which was kinda funny/awesome.
― pretzel walrus, Monday, 28 September 2009 20:58 (fifteen years ago)
I wasn't bowled over by the Box Elders album - I love the 7" tho.
― Colonel Poo, Monday, 28 September 2009 21:01 (fifteen years ago)
the Mantles lp is just out and growing on me on repeated listens. and that new Sic Alps single too.
― grey davies (city worker), Monday, 28 September 2009 21:10 (fifteen years ago)
seeing Reatard, Nobunny & Box Elders tomorrow night!
― Brio, Monday, 28 September 2009 21:14 (fifteen years ago)
PS anybody heard the Almighty Defenders yet? King Khan & BBQ + Black Lips supergroop thing.
― Brio, Monday, 28 September 2009 21:15 (fifteen years ago)
Box Elders LP didn't really impress me on the 1st few listens. I mean, I dug it just fine, but it wasn't killing me or anything. Every time my ipod coughs a BE song, though, I think it's the best thing ever. I think the production isn't doing 'em any favors. Songs are mostly distinctive and memorable, but the blanket of lo-fi dust makes em all blur together when taken as a whole. Not in a good way.
Sic Alps 45 w/ the Donovan cover is a recent favorite. Much better than the US EZ stuff.
― That's not just me saying that, that's the Pentagon. (contenderizer), Monday, 28 September 2009 21:26 (fifteen years ago)
I had exactly the same impression of Box Elders here. So good in small doses, diminishing returns as a whole.
― Brio, Monday, 28 September 2009 21:31 (fifteen years ago)
I saw Mt. Eerie about a week ago, and it was seriously awesome. I think I expected it to be a bit "indie-er" sounding, but it wasn't, and that was good.

this just in: davila 666 is still fun, good stuff.
anyone got anything on bare wires? i like their milk n herpes 7" a bunch.
considering going to see cheap time and pinche gringo tonight. i'm kinda iffy on cheap time/novak, tbh. a few good songs ("spoiled brat," "handy man") but the LP left me kinda cold.
― pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:28 (fifteen years ago)
Ignorant of Bare Wires. Spun that 7" in the store, but it failed to kill me. Love Davila 666 though, especially the singles. Missed them when they played here live, in favor of Kid Thailand, but I'll get another chance in Portland in October (anyone else going to that free Garage Fest thing?). Cheap Time is okey.
― That's not just me saying that, that's the Pentagon. (contenderizer), Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:42 (fifteen years ago)
man i wish i were going to that portland thing. all the bands are playing on one night though, right? at like five different venues?
― pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 29 September 2009 16:43 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, it's gonna be great! Four venues, one night -- Oct 17. The stuff I'm most interested in is largely confined to the two 21+ joints, with some slight spillover to the all ages venues. Figure I can catch at least half of the good stuff.

Yeah, I evaded mention of the sponsor, for reasons of being kind of creeped out by it. Assume they figure that a good chunk of demographic will eventually clean up for work, kids, two-car garage ownership, etc. A good bet.

bare wires were baaaaaad in SF a couple months ago. maybe theyre more honed after some time on the road, but im not sure itd be worth finding out for me. the bassist jumps around a lot in this autistic-seeming way, which is cool enough. the drummer is pretty poor, though, and the lead dude just seems like the main character in an ABC FAMILY adaptation of dazed and confused: no charisma, no danger, but lots of long hair. i like the LP and 7" a lot, though, so it's kind of a toss-up. coulda been a bad night.

I've had the opposite experience. Have heard great stories about the live show, but the records I've heard (a couple LPs and a split 45 with Jeff the Brotherhood) haven't done a thing for me. Appreciate the pwr shredding and earnest early SST vibe, but the tunes don't grab and the jammy parts wander too much for me to sustain interest.
― That's not just me saying that, that's the Pentagon. (contenderizer), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 22:09 (fifteen years ago)

― Roger Sánchez Broto (vain_bowers), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 15:37 (fifteen years ago)
dag i wanna hear that one. really like that split 7" of theirs; been looking forward to more.
saw a pretty chill show last night - harlem, tv ghost and wizzard sleeve. harlem didn't make much of an impression - they had a few decent tunes, but i'm a little fried on that sorta sound at the moment. tv ghost and wizzard sleeve destroyed though, especially tv ghost. all sortsa aggro art-noise-hell in yr face kinda stuff, singer/guitarist had a james chancey thing going on. tunes peeked through the scree fairly often and they were good when they did. picked up their new one on in the red, but haven't had a chance to listen to it yet. wizzard sleeve were a real treat too - heavy keyboard drone psych-punk. less arresting performance-wise, but i found myself enjoying them just as much as the set went on.
― pretzel walrus, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 23:38 (fifteen years ago)
Like all those bands, though I've heard the least by TV Ghost. And I know what you mean about Harlem's sound, but the tunes are there, on the LP anyway. Love Wizzard Sleeve. Good cop. Unfortunately, that tour ain't coming anywhere near the West Coast. Both bands only playing in the Midwest, East Coast and South.

otm on harlem live; the melodies don't make it through the sound of their loud guitars live but on the album they're pretty undeniable.

yup i think "south of france" is better than anything girls have ever written. where girls will drive through a solid melody and then just swagger around for most of a song, harlem keep busy banging out the hooks. saw both of these bands play at a bar at sxsw last year, and i guess this partly has to do with them being a fun garage rock band, but harlem really stole the show.

still getting warmed up to the new king khan & bbq show album, but the title track is i think the best song they've ever written by a pretty wide margin, and i'm a big fan. they're definitely shedding a lot of their punk gruff and going for like, classic songwriting on a lot of these tracks. also it sounds like trying to overcome their limitations as a two-man band. it's fuller sounding, probably due to increased reverb or something. it's really noticeable, and probably on the whole a good thing.

Better than "Waddling Around"? Cuz I think that's the bar, and it's pretty high. ("Captain Captain" and "Why Don't You Lie?" = runners-up.)
― from alcoholism to fleshly concerns (contenderizer), Sunday, 15 November 2009 01:54 (fifteen years ago)
my previous forever favourite king khan & bbq show song was "i'll never belong," and tbh it might be the newness of "invisible girl" that's making me say it, but i don't think so. the great thing about invisible girl is that it's still retro, but in a more ambiguous way. you can point at "waddlin around" and say 'doo-wop' or '50s rock,' but you can't exactly do that for "invisible girl."
― samosa gibreel, Sunday, 15 November 2009 02:22 (fifteen years ago)
there is still some punk snot, it's just toned town a bit; nothing quite as battered as "zombies" and nothing that sounds anything close to "learn my language." the second half is pretty much their standard garage rock jams, with great scuzzy guitar solos and stuff. i listened to the album a couple more times since my last post and i full on love the album now. such a wonderful band.
― samosa gibreel, Sunday, 15 November 2009 02:26 (fifteen years ago)
I do really like the doo-wop stuff they do, just like the KK & BBQ sound much better than either of their solo stuff, although I guess BBQ isn't far off that on his solo stuff.
― Colonel Poo, Sunday, 15 November 2009 02:46 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i love the doo-wop too, but this is good you should really check it out. i don't mean to have sold it as a really significant leap forward in any direction, just noticed a couple changes of pace here and there-it's still very much exactly like their other albums.

a few recent things i wanted to mention (all came out a while back, but i'm slow):
coconut coolouts - "punk house" 7-inch on ken rock. excellent. as goofy as ever, but tougher and rawer than most ccs tracks.
white wires - "pretty girl" 45 on trouble in mind. some of the best power-pop punk i've heard in ages. b-side's a little too nobunny, but "pretty girl" is killer
audacity - power drowning lp on burger. crazy, spastic pop/hc with a huge debt to early redd kross (& maybe the exploding hearts?). songs jump around all over the place like crazy, thrash hard, never go where you expect, but almost always bury two or three massive hooks in the mess. gets better every time i hear it.
stupid party - s/t mini lp on freedom school. dirgy, lethargic flipper-damaged punk that verges over into some kind of grungemetal sonic tarpit. no skills, only retarded monomaniacal riff bashing. very enjoyable if not classic.

tonstartssbandht are two crazy baldheaded florida weirdos who've recently moved to montreal and released a tonne of great music this year. they're touring the usa with ultrathin (who i've mentioned upthread) next week and if somehow any of you have any faith in my punk rock recommendation, try and make it to a gig. sometimes it's just vocal loops, sometimes it's sludge, and sometimes it's psychedelic garage punk, all of which are played with caveman simplicity and a creepy childishness.

So, what was the best stuff this year? I nominate that Cheveu single (Like a Deer in the Headlights) for best of year. Thee Oh Sees killed it, in general, all year, as did (The) Intelligence. Album-wise... Marked Men, Smith Westerns, TV Ghost, The Yolks? Loved all of those. Oh, and the Young Governor Stuff was great, too.

but you don't like "saxophone skree + convulsive drumming"?
― sarahel, Monday, 14 December 2009 06:20 (fifteen years ago)
is that something i said? it sounds like something i'd say...
and i mostly don't like whatever that would describe (european free music? it's coming back to me now), but then sometimes i do. thing about KH is that i'm appreciating him as much as the music. the persona, the dance & performance art aspects, the sui generis selfmade art spectacle he offers.
the sound alone is something else. frankly, i find many (most?) non-fushitsusha KH recordings fairly difficult to tolerate. too shrill, abrasive, chaotic. but a good live show is always accessible, no matter how harsh the noise.
― a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 14 December 2009 06:29 (fifteen years ago)
it is in quotes because it is something you said. Is it the fact that it lacks a certain structure?
― sarahel, Monday, 14 December 2009 06:33 (fifteen years ago)
it's in part that it lacks what i think of as structure, but also because it doesn't do what i want music to do. i think of the relationship between music and me as being primarily physical. music moves a certain way and sounds a certain way and thus compels a sympathetic response. dance being the most basic version of this.
i can certainly enjoy the sensation of having waves of noise peel my skull back, but i prefer that it be anchored to a rhythmic skeleton my body can understand. or at least to an ambient drone i can inhabit comfortably. if the convulsive factor becomes dominant, i lose the ability to physically connect.
that's maybe why a lot of very harsh and even convulsive 60s/70s spiritual free jazz does appeal to me. because it seems as though the music - jazz music, the swing of it - is still present in and under the noise. like the music is trying to get out through the noise.
fwiw, i'm at this place recently where i'm finding a lot of value in music i'd previously written off. especially prog and art music of a non-punk sort. realizing just how closed-minded i've been about certain things, attached to restrictive (received) ideas about what's cool and what's not. enjoying letting that go, and i'm sure that there's a lot of stuff i need to revisit.
― a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Monday, 14 December 2009 06:48 (fifteen years ago)
I hear that - I started listening to Magma, and now find myself listening to King Crimson. But - I get what you're saying about the rhythmic skeleton - there's definitely a range of free music or things that could be described as "saxophone skree + convulsive drumming" in terms of departure from that skeleton.
― sarahel, Monday, 14 December 2009 07:02 (fifteen years ago)
LOVE both magma & king crimson. dunno why, but king crimson have always been exempt from my distaste for prog. perhaps because they were some of the first such music i ever heard, before i had my baffles up. and magma are a universe unto themselves. it's hard to hate a universe.

thread has lost most of its punk points

xp - they broke up two years ago.

That Jeff the Brotherhood sounds really solid from a first listen.
― Jouster, Monday, 14 December 2009 09:47 (fifteen years ago)
jeff the brotherhood album is very good, esp "heavy damage", "the tropics", "bone jam", "mind ride". only complaints i have are that the sequencing is odd (definitely not front-loaded), and that 've already got a lot of the best tracks on singles - but those are minor quibbles.
plus wanted to 2nd samosa the gib on davila 666. keep forgetting to mention it, but excellent album w lotsa variety and a surprisingly high level of pop craftsmanship. was hoping it'd pick up fans outside the ITR/termbo/goner orbit - dunno to what extent that's happened though.
JTB and davila put on two of the best shows i saw in 09. kinda funny that they both also put out lps that don't begin to hint at the craziness they're capable of live. not bad records by any means, but surprising sedate, given the raw materials.

felt the same about several of the shows i liked best this year, especially jay reatard, wooden shjips, AFGCT. all put out records that are almost criminally misleading wr2 what they're capable of onstage. which doesn't make them bad records by any means, but the contrast is jarring.

Just to veer off topic again for a second, I saw the Luttenbachers cover De Futura in a basement in my town in like 2002 or 03 and it was very good. It was the trio lineup with two bass players.
Jay's show this year in town was really good. But he fired that band and seems to have gone off the deep end according to reports coming out of Memphis. So volatile.

just listened to jeff the brotherhood lp again. kinda regret mentioning it here, on punk thread. it is so not punk. kinda sounds like a hybrid of fu manchu & the cars. stoner riffs + minimal 80s pop. live there's an OTT DMBQ/monotonix vibe, but the album's pretty restrained.

is great and everybody should hear it tho
― a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 04:13 (fifteen years ago)
I saw them live earlier this year, and they were good, but definitely had the classic rock/stoner riffs thing going. They don't play with fire or knock over trash cans like Monotonix, they just play their instruments.
― sarahel, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:04 (fifteen years ago)
where'd you see them, sh?
― a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:07 (fifteen years ago)
Oakland, where I live.
― sarahel, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:07 (fifteen years ago)
check
agree they don't go crazy overboard with the "showmanship", but there's definitely a theatrical element. at least there was when i saw em - heavy guitar posing, kit destruction, etc. plus the music's pretty cartoony to begin with. not so far from like turbonegro, guitar wolf, hellacopters, (though a lot more humble and genuine in their rock god shtick).
― a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:14 (fifteen years ago)
well yeah, but not to the OTT extent of Monotonix.
― sarahel, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:18 (fifteen years ago)
i have never heard that band, but i met jeff the brotherhood in a diner near my house and i talked to them about kate bush & madonna.
― ian, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:22 (fifteen years ago)
you should see them! great band and excellent dudes. talked to them for a while after the show, but mostly (ok entirely) not about kate bush & madonna.
― a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:25 (fifteen years ago)
i almost never go out to see live music honestly. i'm an old curmudgeon.
― ian, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:28 (fifteen years ago)
i see lots of live music but don't listen to enough recorded new/contemporary music, so perhaps we balance each other out.
― sarahel, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:31 (fifteen years ago)
i don't listen to a lot of new music either. i have to keep up with it to an extent cuz of my job, but... not at home.
― ian, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:37 (fifteen years ago)
heh - i see lots of live music cuz of my "job."
― sarahel, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 06:38 (fifteen years ago)
i just like going out to see bands, and sometimes i buy their records and bring them home to listen to.
full circle

hipsters...
anyway, i was reading this angry-making dusted review and it was making me all angry. who is patrick masterson and why is he such a dink about the eat skull record?
i wasn't aware that the band were "in such an important position regarding the long-term legitimacy of the current underground", so i guess i'm insufficiently bummed about their failure to immanentize the eschaton, but it's still a damn good record, given that they seem to be total weed hippies.
― a dimension that can only be accessed through self-immolation (contenderizer), Tuesday, 15 December 2009 08:54 (fifteen years ago)
kinda bummed i didn't nominate it on best of 09 thread, but not too much cuz no one would have voted for it anyway. curse you, the double ex! and yes it does belong in punk thread because they kinda rip off the misfits in one song.

I love Dusted, even when they're really, really wrong. Y'know?
― Jouster, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 11:41 (fifteen years ago)
i also for the record love dusted and recommend the regular reading of plus have nothing against patrick masterson who i'm sure is otherwise charming and am apparently way too fond of "kinda" and "bummed" for the record

contenderizer - if you want to pm me i can tell you eat skull-related stories vis a vis "the underground", but I won't post about it here.
― sarahel, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:34 (fifteen years ago)
Glad I'm not the only Dusted reader. Felt like I was for a little while.I like Wild and Inside a lot. All my friends in Portland HATE Eat Skull.Hey guys new Eddy Current Suppression Ring album comes out early next year.New track on their myspace page.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 16:51 (fifteen years ago)
I read Dusted too, from time to time. Rob from Eat Skull lived in Oakland for a while before moving to Portland and starting that band.

Local Flavor is top of the heap for me, too, but it's a more Psych-Drone-Freak kinda thing, I thought. I haven't had enough time to digest the Axemen Scary pt III reissue, but it has been bewitching the two times I've played it. It's really very funny, but also to be taken seriously.
― Trip Maker, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 19:51 (fifteen years ago)
It's really very funny, but also to be taken seriously.
that's exactly how i feel about both the axemen reissues!
i talked to them at their carrboro show, and they were sweet guys, too. the whole in-joke thing translated to the live set very well. big cheap motel is very good, but scary is great. ive only heard them through the reissues, so im very excited for three virgins and whatever else siltbreeze is gonna reissue.
― 69, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 20:01 (fifteen years ago)
the drummer told me about their reunion -- a couple years ago, he was planning his 50th birthday, and someone ran into the bassist, who was homeless and living in a traincar, and invited him to the drummer's party as a surprise. when they were at the party, people kept saying "hey it's the axemen again! the axemen!" (except he said it with his kiwi accent as "x-men" which was cute) so they started talking about wouldnt it be fun, etc, and eventually ended up on tour w times new viking!
― 69, Tuesday, 15 December 2009 20:17 (fifteen years ago)
That's nice. I love a redemption/reunion.I never would have heard of them if it wasn't for the reissues, that's for sure.

Came across a band called Arsene Obscene searching for Metal Urbain rarities: great Francophone "bedroom punk" with a cool single "Partir A La Guerre" on Slovenly, and an LP coming. Ultra fuzzed out sound and truly Thunderous 70's punk riffing. Love it!
