Zomby - Where Were U in '92? (I think this is pretty great even though I was about 8 years old in 1992 - I'm sure others may find it a pointless nostalgia fest).

Earth - The Bees Made Honey... (basically my go-to record when I don't know what to listen to)

Sunn0))) - Flight of the Behemoth (picked this up for £5 in the Zavvi clearout. Still think BlackOne is their definitive record)

Why? - Alopecia (my gf got this up the other day. Really don't understand the appeal)

Future Islands - Wave Like Home (I really like this. Indie-Electro-Pop with Springsteen-ish vocals.)

ears are wounds, Friday, 9 January 2009 11:59 (seventeen years ago)

Robert Forster, The Evangelist (pretty good, as per usual, but nothing to really write home about. i miss Grant...)

Marlo Thomas and Friends, Free to Be...You and Me (great fun!)

Ioannis, Friday, 9 January 2009 12:14 (seventeen years ago)

Still really enjoying the DJ Sprinkles album.

Checking out Mountain People - which I prefer to a lot of the deep house revivalism.

Peverelist I wished I'd found before - Infinity is Now is classic.

Rollmottle's remix of Radiohead's Reckoner is great. I wish that guy released more stuff!

Bytetone's Death of a Typographer - best glitch album in a long time.

Finally like everyone else, Merriweather Post Pavillion.

12 Songs, Randy Newman

I have totally been in a Randy Newman mood lately. (Guys, guess what, the 70's are back, with all its old sorrows wrapped in a kerchief tied 'round a stick). 12 Songs is the only one I haven't been in the mood for again lately. Maybe I've heard it too much. Maybe I prefer the first album, with those songs that late at night can lay you under the floorboards.

Anyway.

Lindsey Buckingham - Gift of Screws
Jeff Buckley - Live at Sin-e (double-disc version)
Sam Phillips - Don't Do Anything
Dodos - Visiter
Callers - Fortune
Max Richter - The Blue Notebooks
Jolie Holland - The Living and the Dead

Chuck Berry's song The Promised Land has had me in the grip of its wondrous purity for most of two weeks. Voice, lyrics and the marvellous sections of guitar.

Also, finally set up my stereo after a long absence wandering the land - first song Deer Park by The Fall. The full sparseness of the drums, guitar and bass near made me weep salt tears of joy.

Thoroughly enjoying making my way through the end of year lists put up here - got a big soft spot for MIA although L'il Wayne leaves me cold.

Uh, and also the recording of an hour-long radio drama that'll be premiered on my "home station" in a week's time, Maailma parim küla (The Best Village in the World) -- has mucho fine wackiness plot wise: starts with an old communist dying (somewhere in Finlad, hmh); before huffing his last puff, the commie makes his son promise that he'll build a church to commemorate his father - the Church of Death; lots of lunacy follows (some of it chillingly credible), with shady donor-organ-trafficking "surgeons", eager military mentalists, a rather hapless church organist tinkling the finale of Beethoven's 9th now and again, and a Bear (uh-uh) roaming the woods and eating all sorts of suspicious officials and clueless tourists galore.
The musical passages, from Mozart's Dies Irae to "ethno-pop" colourings to Ladysmith Black Mambazo, are pretty cool too.

Digging through a bunch of old CD-R books filled with bootlegs. Today, it's been:

*Television 7/2/78, Portland, OR (like, the best thing ever)
*Neil Young/Crazy Horse, Birmingham 1987 (weird era, still some great stuff)
*Richard Thompson - Doom & Gloom from the Tomb (comp of random stuff stretching from Fairport to Linda and beyond -- awesome version of Sandy Denny's "John the Gun")
*Buffalo Springfield - The Missing Herd (stuff left off of the infamous box set, mostly live)
*Pink Floyd BBC Sessions 69-71 (another weird era, but mostly good psych jamz)

show of hands, anyone interested in a blog featuring this kinda stuff? I've been considering it ...

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

How's this measure up against Isbell's contributions to DBT? Samples sound kinda bland.

Daniel, Esq., Thursday, 5 March 2009 11:40 (seventeen years ago)

That Isbell record is my favorite of the year so far. It goes without saying that the 400 Unit is not as good a backing band as the Truckers. And he's not going to win any points for edginess. But he's a great songwriter and if you are inclined to like what he does, you'll love this one.

Sittin at the ghetto thinkin bout
All my homies passed away (uuunnnggghhh!)
Candy painted cadillacs and triple gold
That's how me and my boys rolled
How could it be?

And I'm so all alone

I used to hang with my boy even slang with my boy
Used to bang with my boy, goddam I miss my boy
We started out youngstas in the park throwin birds
In your hearse, damn it's sad to see my nigga in the dirt
The game got me workin, got me perkin, never jerkin
Still blowin dolja fo ya cause I know you up there workin
Ya little baby's cool and ya baby's mama straight
But today's a sad day to see the t-shirt with ya face
From the cradle to the grave, from the streets we used to fall
In the park you liked to ball, put yo name upon the wall
In the projects you's a legend on the street you was a star
But it's sad to see my homeboy ridin in that black car
A lotta soldiers done died, a lotta mothers done cried
You done took yo piece of the pie but you was too young to retire
Why soldiers ride for yo name leave it vain
Some Gs never change, damn they killed you for some change
Smile for my homie Kevin Miller my boy Randall

We used to grip on the grain and flip them candy toys
But I'd give up all that bullshit if I could get back my boy
Off in the club smokin weed til 3, hollerin at the hoes
Spendin $4000 on me on gators and clothes
When I turned to rap, he had to chase the game
Nigga told me, "C, leave that dope, cause rappin is yo thang"
I ain't gone even lie, some nights I ride and cry
Wonderin why the real niggas always the ones to die
So I just smoke my weed and try to clear my mind
I wish that I had the power to turn back the hands of time
I wonder if there's a heaven up there for real Gs
For all the niggas in the game that be sellin keys
I keep my memories, try to keep my head stromg

I'm just sittin here dazed thinkin bout all the times we had
Thinkin the past, some was good and some was bad
Remember Dante?
It was a group of us, just a group of five
Now three dead, one in jail, it seem right now I'm the only one alive
To all my soldiers before me, may ya'll rest in peace
When He took three, took my soul, just the bodies
He at the crossroads guide us out to the rest of me
Wishin I could rewind time like demos
Me and you gettin girls, writin down numbers like memos
Makin million dollar bets, makin all our money stretch like limos
Even though I smile, it's sad, but they say gangstas can't cry
But if I close my eyes and visualize me together
Then I suddenly wanna smile
To see you laid down when it's yo time, when your time was up
You never seen your child, but he's here to remind us
Even though you was wrong, I never could belive that that was true
You was with me forever, you could check my rest in peace tattoos
See me and C and P forever gon be ridin and thuggin
Rest in peace to all the ones that didn't make it
And rest in peace to my brother
We gon miss you
http://images.lowriderarte.com/drawings/0701_lrap_06_z+drawings+notorious_big.jpg
(I love these fools)
I know you in a better place
(Every time I get on my knees)
And I hope to see ya soon someday
(I pray for you, I'm glad you in a better place
I hope I see ya soon, ain't no more killin
Ain't no more fights, and ain't no more tears)

re Isbell and the 400 Unit: the best things are the 6/8 country-soul ballads; and there is a good bit of sorta experimental, noise stuff on the record, so it comes across like program music in a way. nothing perhaps as direct as say the Truckers' "Self Destructive Zones," and Isbell is def a muso--thoughtful, schooled, etc. but the record has its satisfactions and he sings it better than he did the '07 Sirens of the Ditch. I prefer the new one.

keythkeythkeyth, Thursday, 26 March 2009 20:45 (seventeen years ago)

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 26 March 2009 22:15 (seventeen years ago)

both pink frost versions are dismal, 'not given lightly' is a clone of the original but he doesn't sing as well. 'you forget' is really good, sin fang bous too which is strange since i don't much like the original.

keythkeythkeyth, Thursday, 26 March 2009 22:32 (seventeen years ago)

It would be impossible for a cover of Pink Frost to top the original, I think, so probably a bit silly to try. It occurs to me now that House of Love gave it a go, though.

Sleep Tundra (Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You), Thursday, 26 March 2009 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

i love that 'girl with the loneliest eyes' single. drill covered 'pink frost' sometime in the mid 90s before flying nun went completely out of their mind though drill were pretty horrible actually and their cover was awful too. listening to candy claws now, a local band, sounds like seabear/sin fang bous, weird.

kind of two things going on w/ me. country/folk/country-rock on one hand. hank williams, johnny cash, charlie poole, a few old-time country/folk collections like h. smith's 'anthology' that i checked out from the library i work, gram parsons.

hip-hop on the other i guess. mostly wu-tang & ghostface/raekwon solo albums. plus 'new amerykah' like crazy

kinda got back into a few dylan albums too - nashville skyline in particular. oh and 'self-portrait' is actually great!

Er, sorry about the seriously late response. I think Force It is UFO's best studio album, Strangers in the Night being the best overall. After they got their sea legs with Shenker on Phenomenon (another good one), they put it all together on Force It. I like "Petting" but I think Force It is the best.

This year has been all about Billy Joe Shaver, the Sonic's Rendezvous Band box set, playing the Royal Trux song "Juicy, Juicy, Juice" on repeat, LATE '60S WILSON PICKETT, and Grant Green because the record store down the street doesn't stock any of the other jazz guitar guys I've been looking for; not even Charlie Christian. Dude. Oh and um, the Mnemonists and Biota a lot, and Smegma. And the Maths Balance Volumes Lower Forms LP though maybe I shouldn't count that cuz of personal bias and also I had to leave that in America. Plus a few dozen other fleeting obsessions.

Grouper - Dragging a...

How is her recorded output? I saw her live and was kinda bored but thought there was potentially enough there for me to "get it" if I had an lp.

oing oing oing (╓abies), Saturday, 29 August 2009 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

Well... I haven't seen her live (ask me again in 3 weeks after ATP NY 2009), but her recorded stuff is really really great. From what I understand she's gotten progressively more "song" oriented as the albums have gone by -- I'm not the best person to ask as I haven't followed her career in any sort of linear fashion, though. All I know is that most of her stuff sounds almost ghostly, barely there, like a whisper through the clouds. And reverbed waaaaay the fuck out.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Saturday, 29 August 2009 03:23 (sixteen years ago)

I'd say last year's album, the Dead Deer one, is as good a place to start as any. Speaking from experience, of course.
