This CD I'm listening to now 'Orphaned By The Ocean' is on the Rocket label and has a bunch of stuff going on but IMO hits a peak w/ the last track which is totally RIYL that Disco Inferno/Too Pure Records circa '93 space-dub caboodle

HEAVY WINGED/WINDY+CARL "MONOLITH: EARTH" LP+CD

The Monolith series combines two artists on the same one-sided, reverse-cut LP by hard-panning one recording to the right and the other recording to the left. By adjusting the panning controls on his or her turntable, the listener is free to control the degree to which the two recordings melt into one. Each edition in the series is limited to a one-time pressing of 500 picture disc LPs featuring a Monolith inspired painting by Ned Clayton and includes a CD with stereo mixes, extended versions, and bonus tracks.

Monolith: Earth is the oxymoronic pairing of dreamcore drone legends Windy and Carl and new school leaders of free rock Heavy Winged. Heavy Winged contribute one of their darkest, most oppressive tracks yet. The addition of Windy and Carl's purity creates something entirely different. It's no longer the sound of three bros busting out dark drone metal in some shed in snowy Vermont; it's now the sound of some communal artists busting out epic krautjams in the German hinterland. Primitive, vicious early man meets colossal pristine symbol of higher thought - could there be any better pairing for this Monolith?

If the two tracks are actually in tune and in time and fit together then that sounds pretty cool. If not then making it mono and complicated to listen to = bad. (Oh, but I see you get the stereo mixes on the CD, so I suppose in the latter case you're really getting a CD to listen to with a hopefully rad-looking collectible LP you pay through the nose for and never play.)

I would totally go for their "CD 3pack" sale thing at the top of the catalog page if I could work out how you get it to work with the Paypal cart system.

(Also, a link for a free Landing CD with any order, and I think it's one I don't have, so I'm tempted by that. Don't forget to add that to yr cart if you order. If you want one, I mean...)

I'm very excited about this. The vinyl sounds fantastic, and officially "drops" on February 2nd, I've been told. My favorite rock band ever! This LP was originally released in an edition of 200 copies (this reissue is an edition of 500) and originals have always been way out of my price range until now. VERY pleased to see this coming out on Mutant Music!

Japan's Overhang Party were always one of their country's most interesting, multifaceted and imaginative musical units, and we at Mutant Music are honored to be able to make their long out-of-print debut LP available once more.
Overhang Party and its members, which revolve around founder Rinji Fukuoka, have always shown a wide range of musical interest and ability, and this LP shows them all at their formative nucleus, offering a glimpse into what would come in later years in addition to enormous immediate aural gratification.

Initially released privately by the group in 1993 (prior to Rinji's formation of his Pataphysique imprint, which would release the rest of the group's output in addition to many other interesting recordings), this LP was limited to just 200 copies and has long been sought-after by aficionados of the Japanese underground. Needless to say, until now, if one were to be lucky enough to find a copy of this LP, it would come with a suitably enormous price tag; we offer it once again in the vinyl format with its original presentation for those of us for whom the depth of our fanaticism may not always equal that of our bank accounts.

This LP shows the group's long-standing interest in the avant garde and improvisation, featuring some amazing soundscapes which find their way through both the beautiful and the abrasive; they definitely explore some far-out territory, but there are also glimpses into the beautiful saturation of their more "rock" side on occasion, with some particularly expressionistic guitar work from Rinji within the context of a slow-burning psych blowout. This LP features the initial lineup of Rinji Fukuoka (guitar, voice), Iwao Yamazaki (drums), Kouji Nishino (bass) and Kunukunu as guest on VCS3 synthesizer during the track "Air."

Overhang Party ceased in January of 2008, and its members continue on with their new efforts as Majutsu no Niwa. As we honor their early forays with this re-issue, we also eagerly anticipate what the future will being.

reverb worship has been reissuing the long-gone Tranko EPs.. HIGHLY recommended, though the best one (III) is still on the way.. my favourite japanese psych band by far

they've been playing around a bit i guess, but i saw them for the first time tonight and they were really excellent, really great. pg six, helen rush, samara lubelski on guitar, guitar, and violin/bass respectively. holy jeepers was it a good show. Helen does all the singing as far as I can tell. pat plays two guitars incl a nice elecric twelve sorung. some great richard thompson-esque barbs & a pleasing variety of lead-guitar techniques (picked, e-bow, slide. nice. not boring to watch.) sounds sort of like you'd imagine it would--like the helen-sung tower recordings songs with a droned-out hall of fame meets fairport meets charalambides-playing-the-dead type vibe. you know what i mean. composed songs with nice instrumental parts, nice dynamics. i was expecting them to be quiet, but they were pretty rock & roll. so anyway, fucking great great set.

oh man i absolutely loove hall of fame/tower recordings, i need to check it out somehow even though i am far from nyc

Anyone seen Emeralds live? All I've heard is the tape collab with Dilloway, which was good, but it might be his input which keeps it from being otherwise unremarkable. And they're on a bill with Pain Jerk, who is probably headlining and therefore playing afterwards, which seems counterintuitive. Pamper then pummel? Or vice versa??

track 1: cross between nels cline and house of sun. maybe not unlike what sonny sharrock vs brotzmann would sound like if sharrock were missing the bass strings and brotzmann were playing a broken transistor radio.

track 2: ecstatic wordless vocals give way to free folk guitar fuckery. sort of NNCK / JOMF vibe but less predictable

track 3: starts out like house of sun but turns into spare guitar explorations in the vein of the quiet parts of VCN

track 4: dubby free percussion workout followed by a stripped-down guitar jam in a sort of sunroof! style followed by a freakout combination of tracks 1,2 and 3.

My friend told me that the Spiral Joy Band are going to be in town for the Documentary Film Festival going on at the end of the month. It's the first live music thing I've been excited about this year! I hope they get an opportunity at a decent space to stretch out and do their thing. They aren't as relevant to this thread but Black Twig Pickers are coming with them.

^^^called it - I just put the LP on and it totally falls down as an 'experiment' due to the two bands sounding pretty much how they normally sound - HW completely obliterate W&C whose contribution is even quieter and more serene than normal. Also this is a one-sided LP but there are grooves on the other side, containing silence - weird. I have the CD on now and W&C are sounding pretty on top of their game so it's not a disaster or anything

The new Sunburned Hand of Man lp is really good.Just ordered a new TwinSisterMoon 7 inch that comes with a book.Also ordered 2 cdr's by James Jackson Toth's new band Occult Activity On Campus that's on his new label.And i'm really enjoying a couple cassettes i picked up by The Second Family Band "The Eternal Lag" & When We Are Gone".This is last years release but i just heard it for the first time & really dug it & that's Golden Jooklo Age.Also i'm really enjoying the latest 5 cassette dronefest from Natural Snow Buildings.I also ordered the new United Bible Studies on Camera Obscura.
In a couple weeks Robedoor/Pocohaunted & Magic Lantern are playing in town

Saw Robedoor the other night headlining a four band show at UCI -- had to leave pretty early into their set, alas, but they sounded pretty great. Sasqrotch were sharp too.

Can't wait to see Robedoor at SXSW. Ned's piece just made me more excited!

Fantastic album, yes. As I mutter about here.

i stopped keeping up with usaisamonster circa tasheyana compost, and i always sort of regret it. they are a grade-A Good Band. It's weird--Now that I live in NYC I've seen them play maybe twice in five years; when I lived in Providence I saw them at least a dozen times between 2001-2003.

btw they absolutely BRING IT live.

I missed them when they played here last year w/ lightning bolt, they were touring as a 4 piece

Great interview with Six Organs, Ned, really interesting stuff. Wish it was longer. Do you by chance have an unedited transcript (assuming the original interview was cut down)?

There's not much more, and I do wish I had more of a follow-up on it. Some small specifically RTZ trimming was done since this ended up running so late after the release of that.

I remember seeing USAISAMONSTER like 9 years ago in some dark bar in Brooklyn, and thinking they had some serious presence (I seem to recall orange hunting camouflage one piece outfits and crazy beards)... I bought some homemade CDRs from them and I have no idea what ever happened to them.

they are a great band and really nice people, did several shows in our basement in Oregon. sorry to hear they're disbanding but better to quit ahead, yeah?

The first Christina Carter Many Breaths subscription series cd-r came in the mail yesterday and it is really nice, maybe my favorite thing from her since "electrice."

ned, this is the Scream, Baby, Scream! tape. i would have bought it, but the Foot Village peeps inherited some big-ass distro w/o paying for the wares and they were charging $5 and i was kinda like, "so i'm gonna give you $5 for a 15-minute long noise tape? uh you need yr heads straightened, hardly anyone knows who gang wizard are any longer."

It is a joy to finally listen to the Gang Wizard (featuring Ned Raggett) tape on Pink Triforce entitled "The History of Cartography." Talk about a meeting of the minds! It is Wizard at its dreamy Wizardliest, Ned at his eggheadiest, totally delightful. The folks at Pink Triforce (great name) spraypainted the tape gold, which is great, but misspelled Ned's last name as "Raggot," which is not so good. Still: It takes that "The Gift" thing but makes it louder, longer, more pointless, and about a trillion times more obscure, which is to say considerably better.

yeah, same here. I liked puff but could never really get into the s/t for whatever reason. I barely remember it now but I think I found it overly harsh at the time. it's all relative of course, but that's not really what I'm looking for from this band.

it feels like they've really hit their stride with the new one. I've heard the whole thing now and it's just great.

They were good but I mostly listened to them from outside the venue. I enjoyed the first couple of songs but it wasn't working for me as well as IJ and as the venue had no a.c. (it was actually a trailer classroom on campus) I thought "Fuck it" and just chatted with friends outside so I could at least hear them without dying of the heat.

i can't get enough of the stuff that Utech records sent me in the mail. i love this stuff!!!! perhaps the most metal-friendly non-metal label on earth. and i have NO idea who these people are either. or i didn't before i heard them anyway. Aluk Todolo? Olivier Dumont? Guillaume Gargaud? sooooo dark and rich and deep and heavy. i love labels with such a distinct worldview/vision.

I bought the new Blues Control last week and it is indeed great. I too preferred Puff to S/t. But i kinda got into it eventually and i really should pick up the vinyl.

The GOG album is pretty massive. If you like huge walls of guitar drone you will probably like it. But the Aluk Todolo album is great too. This simple drum beat and all this swirling building guitarstuff around it...i dunno, i kinda like it all.

Mammal relocated from Michigan to the Seattle/Tacoma/Olympia area some time back. But yeah, he's been pretty quiet. Though I have this fantasy in my head that he became drinking partners with the Mount Eerie dude because that new Mount Eerie album has some Lonesome Drifter-like ooze on it. Of course, it's not nearly as severe!

Loving the new Christina Carter record, "Lace Heart." Similar to "Electrice" from last year, except the songs are a bit longer in general. Electric guitar & voice, usually singing words. Two LPs.

Also very good is the new Rameses III disc on Type, I Could Not Love You More. I've always enjoyed them well enough but this one really feels like a keeper, a classic case of a lot of familiar approaches recombined into something more distinct. You also get a sense of how it's three people working in concert and with a (gentle) air of improvisation rather than a fully focused solo disc, say.

New Batoh/Espvall also killing it as well -- "Until Tomorrow" is my favorite so far from that.

And yeah it really was one of the best such fests of its kind I've attended -- everything went smoothly, times didn't overrun (which can often be a problem...), good crowd. When the only real complaint to offer is that the Swedish American Hall was a bit stuffy at points, only I felt it more because I was wearing something long-sleeved, then that's a sign. They made it sound like they were going to try for it again next year and I hope they do.
