I can't help but love the silly buggers, to be honest.

Do you really have to choose? I think they can be both. I have to admit that I can't really take much AC/DC at any one sitting, but it's hard to deny the hip-shaking power of something like "You Shook Me All Night Long". Earlier material, while revved up through the amplifiers, is really classic blues with a nasty bent (not that blues can't already be pretty explicit and nasty): Mark Kozalek played this to the hilt with his folked-out reworkings of early AC/DC numbers on his What's Next to the Moon album.
In a way, though, AC/DC is much like the Ramones: if you have one or two of their albums, you probably have all you really need. I'd probably choose Back in Black and Dirty Deeds. Anything post-Back in Black is probably best avoided, though there are sporadic moments worth noting.
― Sean Carruthers, Sunday, 22 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link
Let's see how many of us get to that age and can still rock even slightly, I say. Classic, natch. The Ramones comparison is apt, to be sure, but I feel that all the Bon-era stuff and the first couple of Brian Johnson albums belong in every home. Also, the bottle opener key chain that came with the box-set has proven incredibly useful over the years.
― Ned Raggett, Sunday, 22 April 2001 00:00 (twenty-three years ago) link
Only strike against them - ditto Sean above - is they've lingered so long, consequently made more good albums than you'd need. But, y'know, some of those less celebrated albums - POWERAGE, FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK - are solid as all get out.
(Also, totally inappropriate to apply the word misogynist to songs about fucking, liking women, and liking to fuck women. Albeit AC/DC's are crudely worded - "Up to My Neck in You," "Inject the Venom" etc. The doggerel's part of their charm. More apt to call 'em "human naturists".)

ANYway, I zapped an e-mail to my New Yorker editor with the flimsiest of hopes that he might be able to hook us up. I don't generally like to exploit this particular avenue, as my connection with the magazine seems TENUOUS at best, and I don't want to ask for extra favours or rock the boat. But, to my considerable surprise, John wrote back (the subject header read: "YOU RAWK TONIGHT!") and all was a go! Trouble is, being that this gig was at the Roseland Ballroom (a large-sized venue for mid-level bands, but tiny for AC/DC), the tix were being distributed in a scalper-defying voucher system. Once I heard from John that there would be two tix in my name at the box office, I trucked on up to Roseland and waitedfor a chilly HOUR in the cold with a gaggle of other middle-aged,leather-clad mooks, only to be turned away when I finally got in with the news that: "Press tickets won't be available `til this evening!"
I went back at 6:00, and the street was crawling with scalpers, mounted police, crestfallen metalheads and grown men with paunches and thinning hair dressed like pre-adolescent Australian schoolboys. After unspooling a giant ball of red tape, I finally got my envelope of two tickets (thank god, I was expecting to get stiffed with only one, and having to explain that to Rob would've been unpleasant and awkward). I jogged over to Ye Olde Tripple Inn on 54th street and celebrated with a few pints of Yuengling while I waited for Rob to show up. Huzzah!
After a quick bite, we repaired back over to Roseland where the mob scene was in full swing. We'd heard rumours that the opening "mystery band" was going to be some sort've R'n'R Hall of Fame amalgam featuring members of the Clash and the Police, but suffice to say.....I didn't really expect as much (can you imagine Paul Simonon and Sting playing at an AC/DC show? Me neither.) It wasn't. Instead it was some nobody band called, I think, Momento, who insisted on chiding the capacity crowd with taunts of "old people" and "how come there are so many old fat guys here tonight?" What did they expect? This is AC/DC, not fuckin' Linkin Park. They left the stage to a smattering of indifferent applause.
The floor was packed like a massive cannister of hirsute sardines. Our press tix got us, however, up to the Mezzanine level, which afforded a bit more elbow room and comparitively unobstructed views (although we were still behind the VIP section, which featured little tables on the balcony.) We settled in, grabbed a few more beers and readied ourselves for rock. I spotted Rick Rubin, but no other notables. The crowd was peppered with a truly diverse cross-section. Aging metalheads, guys in business suits, a few hipsters who could've been Strokes roadies wearing "ironic" shirts featuring bygone luminaries like Rainbow and Dio, a couple of legit Hell's Angels, a few mohicans, a mixed bag.....though no hip hop kids. Surprise.
Promptly on-time, the band hit the stage, opening with "Hell Ain't A Bad Place to Be." Bassist Cliff Williams hasn't aged a day. Malcolm issignificantly trimmer and less goblinesque than before. Phil Rudd on the drums is the *SPITTING IMAGE* of Iggy Pop...it's bizarre. Brian Johnson -- complete with signature cap and indecipherable Geordie accent -- still has the pipes, and comes across as possibly the most grounded, nicest guy in rock. And then, of course, there's Angus.....Australia's finest embodiment, now almost fully bald save a friar tuck ring and a thinning widow's peak. His trademark "dance" while playing (massive, gleaming guitar at trunk-level, left knee-raised, shoulders back phasing into shoulders forward, head down, right-knee raised, full-on rocktastic grimace all the while) is a bit less feverish than in years past...but, y'know, the man's fuckin' in his fifties, for god's sakes, and still rocking absolutely furiously. Majesty.
The set list was a bit soft on momentum. Lots of older numbers, like "Gone Shootin'," "The Jack", "Rock'n'Roll Damnation", "If You Want Blood". They, of course, did do stand-bys like "T.N.T.", "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap," "Thunderstruck," "Back in Black" (the second number of the evening), "Shoot to Thrill", "Hells Bells" (the track that got me into them way back in Eighth Grade), "Highway to Hell" and "Whole Lotta Rosie." I was somewhat struck by the absence of "Who Made Who", "Let There Be Rock" and "For Those About to Rock", yet they insisted on playing "Stiff Upper Lip" from their most recent album. After a to-the-minute hour and a half set, they only did one encore (knowing full well that no one paid to get in, save the poor slobs who paid ridiculous scalper fees...I was offered three hundred for my pair) with "You Shook Me All Night Long". To be honest, I've never really liked that song. It's kind of their "Whip It," y'know? Their one "hit single."
After that, following a bit of a tease, the house lights went up, and that was it. Personally, I could've standed a few more tunes, but hey.....I can't complain.

What the heck is with these new reissues? I guess they sold the rights to Sony or something? Ok fine, great, an opportunity to finally put the catalog in order. But no, they're re-releasing the same stupid American versions! So we're going to once again end up with "Problem Child" stupidly on both Let There Be Rock and Dirty Deeds Done Done Dirt Cheap, and a half-assed Jailbreak EP, while great Australia only cuts like "R.I.P", "Stick Around", and "Carry Me Home" languish. How idiotic.

This is so true. I'm glad they got him back in the fold after the years with "the bald guy from the Firm" (as everyone used to call him).
If I had to OPO it would probably be Let There Be Rock. Which sort of a weird choice because it probably has the least amount of Bon's signature humor. Which is of course one of the main reasons I love the band so much. That side is best featured on Dirty Deeds and Highway to Hell.
But Let There Be Rock - it's just so relentlessly heavy. The production is weird, the guitars just crackle with electricity. The album really shows off the way the twin guitars play off each other to create those glorious riffs. Like on "Overdose" which has the long intro w/ the arpeggios and the crashing drums. Then one guitar picks up the riff, then the next one locks in. It just becomes this churning monolith. Like space-rock or something. Yet for all of that there is still space in the music; they don't let the chords ring too long, they clip them off. This sound is nothing like the happier music, still tethered to the blues, on earlier records like High Voltage.
But yeah, every Bon Scott era record is a classic, and a decent number of the Brian Johnson ones as well (I'll take everything up to and including Flick of the Switch, and I actually really liked Ballbreaker).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/tayside_and_central/7792166.stmAC/DC are about to be paid a glowing tribute at Holyrood in recognition of the rock band's Scottish roots.
South of Scotland MSP Christine Grahame has lodged a parliamentary motion calling for the achievements of the group to be acknowledged.
Founding members Angus and Malcolm Young were born in Glasgow before the family moved to Australia in 1963.
And former frontman Bon Scott was born in Kirriemuir, where there is a memorial plaque in his honour.http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45313000/jpg/_45313762_41646570.jpgAC/DC were formed in 1973 and have sold more than 150 million records worldwide, with songs such as Highway to Hell, Back in Black and For Those About to Rock (We Salute You).
In 2003, the band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Glasgow gig
They recently released a new album called Black Ice and will play Hampden Park in Glasgow next year as part of a world tour.
Ms Grahame's motion - entitled AC/DC, We Salute You - calls on the Scottish Parliament to recognise the band's Scottish roots; note that their popularity continues to grow and welcome their forthcoming performance in Scotland; and to acknowledge the musical inspiration the band has provided to thousands of Scottish musicians.
Ms Grahame said: "It is clear Scott had a strong sense of his identity, from the 'Scotland forever' tattoo he had on his arm to his playing the bagpipes on the AC/DC track It's a long way to the top.
"When they played Glasgow in 1978 the whole band wore the Scotland national football strip as their concert took place just ahead of the World Cup finals and it would be fitting if they were to do the same when the band play Hampden national football stadium next June.
"After 35 years AC/DC are still contributing to music and giving fans enjoyment worldwide.
"I think they have long deserved official recognition from their homeland for that major musical contribution and my parliamentary motion will go some way towards recognising that."
Angus and Malcolm Young are guitarists and songwriters in AC/DC. Bon Scott died of alcohol poisoning in 1980, aged 33.

Maybe this was just Easy Street in Seattle, but I think some indie stores got some copies in the same day as Walmart. I bought mine on release day.
Black Ice sounds like the superior and mature followup to Blow Up Your Video. Black Ice makes Razors Edge, Ballbreaker, and Stiff Upper Lip seem like atypical experimental albums in comparison.
And of course, Black Ice is great.

"Maybe this was just Easy Street in Seattle, but I think some indie stores got some copies in the same day as Walmart. I bought mine on release day."
I have heard stories of indie stores buying copies of AC/DC, the Eagles, Garth Brooks or whatever else Wal-Mart exclusive is being sold at loss-leader prices and then repricing them for sale at their own shops. In many cases, it's cheaper (and more profitable) than getting them direct from the major label to buy them at Wal-Mart for $9.99 and sell them for $12.99. Affects sales numbers, too, with all the indie bulk buys boosting the bottom line.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 19 December 2008 20:09 (fifteen years ago) link
I like it quite a bit. Beats hell out of House of Jazz. I might have said in another thread that there a bunch of things which stick on this one. Rock 'n' Roll Train is the obvious one. But my favorites off it are Wheels and Money Made. Spoilin for a Fight, too.
It's to the AC/DC classic albums list what Venus in Overdrive is to Rick Springfield's classics. It's not going to crowd Highway to Hell or Powerage, but it competes fairly easy within the Brian Johnson albums. I never listen to Thunderstruck, Blow Up Your Video, the Maximum Overdrive soundtrack or Fly On the Wall anymore. This one's best songs I can see hanging in there for awhile.
Maybe Angus looks silly in the booklet shot but he sure doesn't sound silly. Plus that rhythm guitar still has it.
The used store on Colorado, Penny Lane, also had a copy of something advertised as the opening band on the AC/DC tour. The Answer? Advertised as sounding like classic rock or old Free. Passed on that one.

I think I discussed this with da croupier, but Black Ice is the perfect album for the fan of both Jet *and* The Darkness, both of which became popular since AC/DC last released an album. It's likely the band made this with one factor in mind that was "Ah, so the kids like Jet and the Darkness, eh?"

Powerage is their high water mark. Every song a winner and it contains Bon's best lyrics. It tends to get forgotten though. My 10 year old son is partial to "Dirty Deeds..." except for "Big Balls", which he hates but can't quite explain why.
― kwhitehead, Friday, 6 April 2012 16:59 (twelve years ago) link
Too subtle?
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 April 2012 17:06 (twelve years ago) link
Powerage is the best. Quite agree that it has Bon's best lyrics - and I think it's the only album free of innuendo. It's a proper blue collar struggle album. Dirty Deeds has always seemed to me to be very patchy. Ain't No Fun is way too long, though it has a great lyric and Bon's best asides (Oi! Howard Hughes! Get your bloody jumbo jet off of my airport!"). Squealer is actively unpleasant, and a genuinely misogynist song.
BTW Anyone who reckons AC/DC aren't/weren't misogynist - how do you explain away Squealer and The Jack?
― Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Friday, 6 April 2012 18:08 (twelve years ago) link
I concur with you, Viva Brother. DD is patchy and the humor is too broad but, when yer 10 like my son, subtlety is a non-issue. Thankfully, he isn't aware of the misogyny.
Also, your take on "Powerage" otm.
― kwhitehead, Friday, 6 April 2012 18:50 (twelve years ago) link
In the band's defense: last time I saw them live, they made a point of women *and* men flashing their chests on the jumbotron.
Not in their defense: "Let Me Put My Love Into You"
"Don't you struggle,Don't you fight,Don't you worry,'Cause it's your turn tonight."
Come on, everybody, sing it with me!
"Let me put my love into you, babe,Let me put my love on the line,Let me put my love into you, babe,Let me cut your cake with my knife."
Great song, though.
― Josh in Chicago, Friday, 6 April 2012 18:54 (twelve years ago) link
I love Dirty Deeds, far and away my favorite AC/DC album. "Big Balls" is the only point at which the humor goes too broad, imo (though I loved it as a kid), and yeah, "Squealer" is p gross. But the title track is such a blast, same for "Rocker" and "Problem Child". Surprised that people think that "Ain't No Fun" is too long. I mean, it is long, but it's one of my very favorite AC/DC tunes, totally mesmerizing from start to finish. "Ride On" too, a real curveball in their catalog.

I'll rep for Flick Of The Switch, but that's more for the sound of the band than for anything Brian does. The band is blazing and raw.
Otherwise, it's seriously hit or miss since BiB.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 6 April 2012 22:37 (twelve years ago) link
I don't think in some ways for all their greatness and popularity that AC/DC gets the quite rep for just the raw use of minimalism in their sound. Many of their great songs are just that very straight pounding beat tied around those huge open chord stabs. Even by their peak heyday of the 70s, people had been playing rock guitar for a while, yet that hard stripped down use of chords - you start messing with a guitar and crap it sounds like AC/DC. It's easily as genius and signature as how the Ramones used simple changing powerchords. Add in Tony Iommi's use of powerchords, sometimes detuned in Sabbath and you pretty much have the holy trinity of heavy and hard guitar riffage.
― earlnash, Saturday, 7 April 2012 00:04 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah, I liked the MOJO piece on AC/DC a few months back, where Angus really stresses how much the simplicity is conscious, by design. Open chords, nothing fancy. But what makes AC/DC special, I guess, is that Angus can also really play. That's the real key to something like Back in Black - big dumb songs, big open chords, blazing solos.
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 April 2012 00:24 (twelve years ago) link
I also agree that post Back in Black, there's really only one or two killer tracks per album. But those tracks are awesome!
― Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 7 April 2012 00:25 (twelve years ago) link
Yeah AC/DC's really pretty deceptive in their simplicity --- once you dig into the music, and Angus, they're really really on their shit.
And this is a really dumb admission but I had NO idea that Malcolm and Angus Young were George Young's little brothers. Easybeats were one of my favorite bands growing up, and it never occured to me that they were related [insert facepalm here]
but seriously, how's that for a Rock N Roll hall of fame family. Amazing to me, really.
― Peppermint Patty Hearst (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 7 April 2012 00:43 (twelve years ago) link
i'm not a big hard rock person, but the minimalism and the guitar tone make ac/dc completely amazing. there is just nothing else that compares.

Oh Bon looked like the perennial 16 year-old boy up to no good, I don't even want to know half of what he got up to irl.
Brian gives the creepy vibe singing but to clarify, I think that that uncle thing works in his favor off stage. He seems like a nice bloke. You'd probably be relatively safe to have a conversation with him if you're of the female persuasion. Bon, I'm not so sure about, lol.

Malcomn is really the secret weapon in the band. He's riff guy in that group and his playing is so fxxxxxg tight that the whole band swings around him like a clock gear.

No props for Cliff Williams? Utilitarian for sure but somehow perfect for the band. He knows his place. "Love Hungry Man" is the only song I can recall when the band let him do some fret walking.
― kwhitehead, Saturday, 7 April 2012 03:25 (twelve years ago) link
Malcolm, Cliff and Phil are my heroes in AC/DC. Malcolm especially. For the absolute self-discipline required to spend the last four decades doing as little possible while the other two do the crowd pleasing flash. Love watching them on stage, too: the factory workers who clock on, go to their work stations and just do it for two hours.
― Viva Brother Beyond (ithappens), Saturday, 7 April 2012 08:26 (twelve years ago) link
Cliff is the king of the one-note arena bass line. One of my favorite concert images is Cliff and Malcolm hanging out at the back by Phil, then sauntering up to the mic for the big choruses, only to return to hanging back after.

The thing about Cliff is that, while it may seem like he has the least demanding job in the world, the subtle swing he applies to those eighth-note parts is an utterly essential ingredient in the AC/DC sound. Their signature rhythm is defined by the tension between Malcolm and the drums, who tick away like clockwork, and the push-pull feel of Williams's basslines.

― da croupier, Friday, 26 July 2013 01:42 (eleven years ago) link
like they're both rewrites of earlier smashes (albeit still hook highlights of the period) but where "Thunderstruck" takes "Who Made Who" and turns it up to eleven, "Money Talks" just adds Brian goading a hooker (or a maid) to a rehash of "You Shook Me All Night Long"

''AC/DC members have previously made a pact that no band members will be replaced should someone need to leave the band.
Unless they made that pact in 1995, this makes no sense. Obviously, they replaced Bon Scott, but they're on their 3rd or 4th bassist, they had two different replacements for Phil Rudd, and even Malcolm was replaced on some 80s shows.

Hmm. I think the fact that it's already been six years since the last album, which means at minimum two more 'til the next one, if there's a next one, hints that announcing a formal split or retirement or whatever is sorta beside the point. Every band is on hiatus between albums and tours. But yeah, that Billboard piece is pretty rife with a non-denial denial vibe. It'd be pretty easy to kill this rumor right now, and that article does not do it.
Basically, no official word from the band or management, let alone anyone on the record, so I fear for the worse.

Again, sorta vague. Confirms someone in the band has a debilitating illness, confirms there is still a plan to head to the studio to see how things go, and maybe that there will be a 40th anniversary tour. But then he also says everything is up in the air, so I guess plans don't mean that much.

it'd be nice if they got to do one last big album and farewell tour, a lot of big bands end their run unexpectedly and don't get to soak in a moment like that. but they're old guys and nobody lives forever, it's okay whenever it ends, they've had a great run.

― Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 22:26 (ten years ago) link
maybe it's strategic, their hits are such high points that it must really boost their catalogue sales to have them spread out on albums that are otherwise plenty listenable
― j., Wednesday, 16 April 2014 22:41 (ten years ago) link
Man, there have been tons of best-ofs and greatest hits released for all sorts of shitty bands. It has nothing to do with I'd want - that is, nothing - but what the band could get away with releasing and yet has not released. Boxed set-wise, the two sets - Bonfire and Backtracks - are sort of odds and sods, no? There's no equivalent of the 4-disc career-overview best-of that, again, lots of other acts release. Whether one is warranted or not is another question, but again again, that has not stopped lesser bands from doing it.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 April 2014 22:43 (ten years ago) link
but what the band could get away with releasing and yet has not released
this is the thing - they're proud of their albums as individual works, they reasonably think there's no need to fleece fans, the two movie soundtracks are functional best-ofs, Family Jewels has almost everything you'd want to see, and the DVD in Backtracks has the alternate videos.
and as one of the best-selling bands in the world, they're likely not under any irresistible pressure to cash in from any record companies. (and even if they were, I'd guess have enough control via George and Alberts to refuse if they wanted.)

if AC/DC was going to do any kind of best-of, they'd probably have to do a Bon and a Brian comp separate
what Metallica and AC/DC also have in common is that they were two of the biggest holdouts in not putting their music on iTunes for years before finally giving in. interesting how it's a couple bands who have dozens of singles in permanent rock radio rotation that are really trying to uphold the sanctity of the album.

When they say "nephew," it's important to remember that this isn't a Richie Faulkner-in-Judas Priest situation where the new guy is half the age of the rest of the band. Stevie Young is 57; Malcolm is 61.

AC/DC will eventually become a ghost band, like the Count Basie Orchestra, the Duke Ellington Orchestra, or the Mingus Big Band (all currently active entities).

i dig that they were actually considering naming the album "man down" but agree it's a little mean - the beauty of "forget the hearse cuz i'll never die" is that they're not directly referencing bon so much as refusing to alter their course, "rock or bust" is definitely more appropriate
as to whether this will be any good, whether they should break up, all these questions were resolved about thirty years ago

may have even said it on this thread but i like to think of powerage as a concept album about bon scott belatedly experiencing being dumped for the first time in his life and just losing his mind about it. "hell ain't a bad place to be" on the last album even being kind of a foreshadowing

Dementia at 61? Man, I wonder what's going on. My dad had a rare form of Alzheimer's called post cortical atrophy, but I don't think that affects short term memory as radically as that article indicates Malcolm is dealing with.

I'm sort of warming to it? After the initial disappointment I think I just accepted this is no new Thunderstruck, not even a new Heatseeker or Stiff Upper Lip, but just an OK AC/DC song, and that's something I can appreciate. I like it better than Rock n Roll Train but it's not even close to Anything Goes, which still is my favorite AC/DC track since Big Gun.

AC/DC drummer Phil Rudd's charge of attempting to procure murder has been withdrawn.
Rudd appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday and was also charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of cannabis and threatening to kill.
Rudd's lawyer, Paul Mabey QC, said this afternoon that the Crown solicitor withdrew the charge after a meeting with Mabey and police.
The Crown solicitor said there was insufficient evidence to justify the charge, Mabey said.

That's a slightly different story to the one I've heard... the one I heard was that Moon was so pissed off at MacLagan making off with Kim that he paid someone to have his fingers broken to put an end to his career, rather than have him killed. It wasn't that long ago, Pete had to write to Mojo or some such to refute an oft told tale about one of his original Mod hard nut mates that had killed four men in a brawl. "Killed" was a more poetic term for "hurt a bit" back in the sixties, you see.

okay back to me going through the AC/DC entire discography....
we left off about halfway through For Those About Rock....ended up being a bit of a slog, obv the title track is all time, but yeah felt like them trying to recreate Back in Black to lesser results...
Flick of the Switch is maybe the nadir (at least until the late 90s/00s)....reaaaaaly uninspired mid-tempo stompers, seems like they were all written by AC/DC coming up with a title they were going to shout in the chorus...."Rising Power" is a keeper, but outside of that I've already forgotten everything except "Bedlam in Belgium" because it had the world "Belgium" in the title and seemed to be a story song about some AC/DC show that turned into a riot
now on Fly on the Wall....again I think this is not well regarded but actually seems a bit better than Flick of the Switch at least...."Shake Your Foundations" is great....
― punk rocketeer (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 November 2014 18:14 (ten years ago) link
but i mean it's hardly great or anything
"Sink the Pink" - lolzy song title aside is pretty great -- though looking ahead they recycled this and "Shake Your Foundations" for Who Made Who
― punk rocketeer (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 November 2014 18:17 (ten years ago) link
ok the rest of this outside of those 2 standouts isn't super great, danger is okay
― punk rocketeer (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 7 November 2014 18:35 (ten years ago) link
okay wow does the title track to "Who Made Who" feel like a breath of fresh air....their new wave song? Or at least proof they like Eliminator by ZZ Top? way more spare track with the repeating bass and angus seemingly trying to simulate a sequencer with an SG....catchy as hell...
it's such an odd album...a "soundtrack" with a new hit song, a some of their "greatest hits", the two songs from the previous album, one Bon Scott era fan favorite....and two (pretty cool) instrumentals....don't really know what this is supposed to be but honestly it works as a listening experience

i skipped over the hits on who made who because i'd just heard them all
on to Blow Up Your Video
definitely off to a better start than the last few, "Heatseeker" is sprightly, quicker tempo and catchy and Johnson actually bothering to write some vocal melodies, seems in the vein of Who Made Who (the song), seems as though they've struck on a good variation on an AC/DC song with this stuff

i'd never really listened to Thunderstruck on headphones before
so anyway, the last time, when they go back to the whoa-ah-oh-ah-ohoh-ah-oh part, there are THREE drum machine hits on the fill before they kick the guitar in for the final "Yoooo beeen THUNDERSTRUCK"...it's so clearly a drum machine, really weird
― punk rocketeer (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 14 November 2014 02:39 (ten years ago) link
i always noticed that those hits had a really heavy echo on them that made them stick out but i just kind of assumed it was for dramatic effect, didn't consider whether it was punched in on a drum machine. AC/DC drums are so typically devoid of flashy flourishes that it would be kind of appropriate if one of their most memorable drum fills was added by a producer with a drum machine while mixing down.

AC/DC has indeed resolved to move forward; it's planning to tour next year. Whether Rudd will join his bandmates remains in question."Phil created his own situation," says Young. "It's a hard thing to say about the guy. He's a great drummer, and he's done a lot of stuff for us. But he seems to have let himself go. He's not the Phil we've known from the past."

As the judge dressed Phil Rudd down, perhaps the most stinging rebuke was that the former AC/DC drummer's playing wasn't anything special.
Judge Ingram said there was no evidence he had an offer from the band and he was not convinced that Rudd's drumming was integral to the AC/DC sound.

It's really insane, isn't it? Has there ever been another band that lost so many members in such quick, unrelated succession, and not by death, firing or quitting? Phil Rudd in legal limbo, Malcolm committed, and now Brian told to stop? It's just crazy. If I were Cliff or Angus I'd sleep with one eye open.

I would actually rather see AC/DC with Rudd and without Johnson than the other way around.
But what is (or was, I guess) Johnson's range these days? Can he even get anywhere near the high notes in "Back In Black"? A younger singer might be able to deliver where Johnson couldn't.

this doesn't really "sound fine" to me - i mean, he's mostly hitting the right notes, but there's not a lot of power behind them, he's slurring his words a lot too compared to how he sounded in his prime. esp when compared with this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQywr-PBR_o
and 15 years ago. from his last tour, he sounds godawful - and it's in a lower key now too. he has no power anymore

― MatthewK, Tuesday, 8 March 2016 11:57 (eight years ago) link
Oh, I agree there's no power to his vox. But it's not like he's hitting bum shrieks or whatever. And I know I was listening critically back in 2001 or whenever, just don't think it mattered. Haven't seen them since, though, and yeah, it's been a while. I don't know what singer gets better as he reaches his 70s. Springsteen is about as good as they get in terms of powerhouse vocals in old age, and he's singing in different registers/keys, too, with less power, etc. And you know he's been taking better care of himself.

I saw them on the Ballbreaker tour, and he did sound fine, but also changed some melodies around slightly to avoid the highest notes ("Back in Black" most obviously). He wasn't super powerful, but he was by no means tired or struggling.

I saw them in 2008 (twice!) and he sounded as good as I expected the singer for AC/DC, whose voice sounds like sheets of plate glass being fed into a tree shredder at the best of times, to sound.

What I heard from someone who I'd trust implicitly on knowledge of this tour is that they were auditioning singers last week. He told me this morning that these stories were the first he'd heard of Axl joining and it sounded like crap to him. Not least because he fully expected GNR to be announcing a US stadium tour imminently.
Agree on the issue of AC/DC's disicpline v Axl's complete lack of it. I can't imagine the AC/DC organisation tolerating someone with an ego that might upset their applecart in any way.

As much as we want this tour to end as it started, we understand, respect and support Brian's decision to stop touring and save his hearing. We are dedicated to fulfilling the remainder of our touring commitments to everyone that has supported us over the years, and are fortunate that Axl Rose has kindly offered his support to help us fulfill this commitment." AC/DC will resume their Rock Or Bust World Tour with Axl Rose joining on vocals. The European stadium tour dates begin on May 7 in Lisbon, Portugal and run through June 12 in Aarhus, Denmark as previously announced (see below for full itinerary). Following this European run of dates with AC/DC, Axl Rose will head out on his Guns N' Roses, 'Not In This Lifetime' Summer Stadium Tour. As many AC/DC fans know, the remaining shows for the 2016 AC/DC Rock or Bust World Tour, including 10 postponed U.S. shows, are being rescheduled with a guest singer. I want personally to explain the reason because I don't believe the earlier press releases sufficiently set out what I wanted to say to our fans or the way in which I thought it should be presented. On March 7th, after a series of examinations by leading physicians in the field of hearing loss, I was advised that if I continue to perform at large venues, I risked total deafness. While I was horrified at the reality of the news that day, I had for a time become aware that my partial hearing loss was beginning to interfere with my performance on stage. I was having difficulty hearing the guitars on stage and because I was not able to hear the other musicians clearly, I feared the quality of my performance could be compromised. In all honesty this was something I could not in good conscience allow. Our fans deserve my performance to be at the highest level, and if for any reason I can't deliver that level of performance I will not disappoint our fans or embarrass the other members of AC/DC. I am not a quitter and I like to finish what I start, nevertheless, the doctors made it clear to me and my bandmates that I had no choice but to stop performing on stage for the remaining shows and possibly beyond. That was the darkest day of my professional life. Since that day, I have had several consultations with my doctors and it appears that, for the near future, I will be unable to perform on stage at arena and stadium size venues where the sound levels are beyond my current tolerance, without the risk of substantial hearing loss and possibly total deafness. Until that time, I tried as best as I could to continue despite the pain and hearing loss but it all became too much to bear and too much to risk. I am personally crushed by this development more than anyone could ever imagine. The emotional experience I feel now is worse than anything I have ever in my life felt before. Being part of AC/DC, making records and performing for the millions of devoted fans this past 36 years has been my life's work. I cannot imagine going forward without being part of that, but for now I have no choice. The one thing for certain is that I will always be with AC/DC at every show in spirit, if not in person. Most importantly, I feel terrible having to disappoint the fans who bought tickets for the canceled shows and who have steadfastly supported me and AC/DC these many years. Words cannot express my deep gratitude and heartfelt thanks not just for the recent outpouring to me personally of kind words and good wishes, but also for the years of loyal support of AC/DC. My thanks also go to Angus and Cliff for their support. Finally, I wish to assure our fans that I am not retiring. My doctors have told me that I can continue to record in studios and I intend to do that. For the moment, my entire focus is to continue medical treatment to improve my hearing. I am hoping that in time my hearing will improve and allow me to return to live concert performances. While the outcome is uncertain, my attitude is optimistic. Only time will tell. Once again, my sincere best wishes and thanks to everyone for their support and understanding. Love,Brian

It's kinda weird to think that one of the rowdiest rock and roll bands in AC/DC is hanging on life support because of real estate rental out clauses all over the world.
Consider that a band like AC DC makes this big plan to play a world tour, you got to work with bookers to arrange sports stadiums and arenas around the world. Basically hold the date, which booking agency has to put up some money. If AC DC totally cancels, I would imagine they have to pay back to the booking agency for cancel fees.
When you get to be artist playing a bunch dates in big rooms, that can add up to a whole lot of money. I'm pretty damn sure that's why the Who probably in the wake of Entwistle's death retooled and were back on it in a very short time. I don't doubt this AC DC situation is the same deal.
Mal's health put him out of action, Phil's in jail and Brian's gone deaf - what a rough run.
― earlnash, Saturday, 30 April 2016 19:23 (eight years ago) link
Bands are insured to cover these issues and massive tours have been cancelled in the past, so I guess there's also this bloody minded determination to go ahead despite everything. Also that's a hell of a lot of money.

'm pretty damn sure that's why the Who probably in the wake of Entwistle's death retooled and were back on it in a very short time.
According to Townshend, the Who were insured (and, in fact, made sure to insure themselves given Entwistle's unhealthy appearance during their tour rehearsals). The main reason they didn't cancel the tour was the vast numbers of employees who would've been out of work for x number of months. That said, I believe Townshend was on the same band-tour-treadmill train of thought that also wouldn't allow for the cancellation of their 1979 tour post-Cincinnati.

hah, yeah. technically Phil wasn't an original member either. Obviously Phil and Cliff were in the band for 99.8% of its existence but I do find it funny that a lot of the rockist fanbase who has been loudly whining about the departure of "original members" hurting the authenticity are forgetting that the Australian version High Voltage was recorded with Bon, Angus, Malcolm, and a handful of no-names on bass/drums.

I was annoyed today that not many people were acknowledging George's death, especially with regards to his influence on AC/DC. He was greatly responsible for the raw sound of the band's pre-Highway to Hell output, and Let There Be Rock has one of the gnarliest, aggressive guitar tones ever recorded. Here's a great story about the recording that album via wiki:
In a 1991 interview with Guitar World, Angus recalled, "The song "Let There Be Rock" was unusual for me. I remember my brother, George, saying in the studio, 'C'mon Ang, let's get something different here'...I had great deal of fun on that whole album. On the last track, I remember the amp blowing up at the end. I said, 'Hey, the speakers are going!' You could see it in the studio, there was all this smoke and sparks, and the valves were glowing. He kept yelling at me, 'Keep playing, keep playing!'"

I didn't know Vanda and Young were Flash and the Pan until the day George passed. It's funny because I've had the song "Down Among the Dead Men" going through my head, it's a great little 60s "death ditty" pop tune disguised as new wave.

There used to be a YouTube video of Malcolm's isolated guitar track from "Let There Be Rock" - it was breathtaking in its metronomic precision and force. Made Michael Rother sound like some kind of jam-band hippie by comparison.

RIP. Never heard a rhythm guitarist that could match him. And lest we forget, within the band, he was known as "The Riffmaker", being the point of origin of so many of their greatest songs.

unperson and Ned OTM, a huge part of what converted me to AC/DC was the precise energy and leanness of the rhythm section. RIP.

Wow. There are ample interviews with Angus describing Malcolm as the better of the guitarists. It's also Malcolm who imposed (in the best way) the band's open chord minimalism. I love his rhythm playing on "Thunderstruck" so much. RIP.

Even if Mal was still there, you can't expect now to be 1977 or 1987 for that matter. Hard to know if Angus will continue, but I kind of hope he still keeps playing music in some form. Whatever happens from now on really can't change what has already gone down.
I'd just hope peace to the Young family for losing two members so close together, that is not easy however it goes.
There is a funny thing in one of the ABC/BBC documentaries about AC/DC where their mom figures there is no way the two brothers will be able to play together for long without killing each other. It was a surprise to the family that they were able to make it work together in the same band since they fought like cats and dogs as kids.

Seems like the new album is essentially Angus getting the most long-standing members in to put songs on top of demos that Angus and Malcolm recorded in 2003; so a final album with Phil Rudd, Cliff Williams, Brian Johnson, Stevie Young, Angus Young, and Malcolm rhythm guitar on every track. If Angus does a farewell tour with none of those players except Stevie, plus Axl or rotating allstars as singer, good luck to him.
(one hopes that "final" and "farewell" are the crucial modifiers. this band have been characterised by forward momentum in the face of appalling challenges, but closure would probably be appropriate for fans and Angus by then.)

Last year on the 40th anniversary of Highway to Hell, I was commissioned to do a special piece about bit for Invisible Oranges to commemorate the occasion. This is the direction I took it
I was only ten years old when Highway to Hell came out. Though this still puts me several decades older than most Invisible Oranges readership (and, um, editors), it means we all shared discovery of the album and the original AC/DC vocalist Bon Scott long after its release 40 years ago.My 17-year-old son Matthew is among the latest to get into AC/DC. He heard the band initially through pop culture -- their songs are still trotted out for Hollywood blockbuster soundtracks, the radio plays a dozen or so songs on the regular, Jack Black emulated Angus Young’s riffs and schoolboy fashion sense in School of Rock, and women still gyrate to the band for fun and profit. (Not that Matthew knows anything about that! Though he did say “Girls Got Rhythm” was his jam which I think shows pretty good parenting, even more so than not showing him that video.)Between asking him to do his chores, I asked him how it was that he was enjoying Highway to Hell at the same age when I was doing so when kids are supposed to hate their parents’ music and vice-versa.“No matter what a lot of people say, I think of AC/DC as the definition of rock-'n'-roll,” he said as prideful tears welled up in his dad’s eyes. “They may on paper sound generic, but try finding a band that sounds anything like them. It’s just rock in its essence. This is some of the most faithful stuff I’ve seen. Truthfully it hasn’t aged. It won’t die, it doesn’t really change, and it fits with every generation.”

I don't think I read that piece at the time, but it's good, and you're absolutely right that they do a lot of different things on H2H; "Touch Too Much" and "Get It Hot" are very much pointing the way toward the New Wave AOR of the early 80s, "Beating Around the Bush" is pretty much exactly what Ted Nugent was doing on his late 70s/early 80s albums like Weekend Warriors and Scream Dream, and "Night Prowler" is maybe the slowest blues they ever recorded; it's almost biker doom. AC/DC always had more ideas than they were given credit for, and most of them were good ones.

honestly I was the same with AC/DC. I used to think Bon Scott sounded like a muppet with chlamydia and I hated the so-called "sameiness" of their music, also believed challops like that Brian Johnson era was superior (when really the only thing of his I liked was Back in Black)
Was about 9 years ago I went through their near entire discography and fell in love with the Bon material. it's so raw and purely face-melting.

a muppet with chlamydia
As if this is a bad thing for the notorious singer of a hard rock band.
My favorite AC/DC story is from both of the times when I saw them on the ... maybe first Ballbreaker and then the Stiff Upper Lip tour? Whenever it was, during probably "The Jack" iirc they had a camera panning the crowd for flash-happy women, but after a couple of flashing women the camera would linger on flashing men, too, and it just alternated from there.

i love the Bon era the bestbut overall with this band I think the joy of relistening as a longtime fan now is that there is a lot of joy in their music, and how the fun IS that it’s not really “about” anything. And lately for me on a musical level, marvelling how the whole rhythm section is *so* locked in, solid as a fucking rock, with these perfect spaces to support Bon’s showmanship, or Angus’s solos, or fuckin bagpipes or whateverit’s a thing of beauty imo

I feel like one of the only people who loves Fly on the Wall. Crazy underrated album. A little clunky (Simon Wright's style is more caveman compared to Rudd's swinging groove) but it's loaded with some wicked rockers.

given the excess, not got to that one yet.but to be fair, have listened to 4 of them, and so far, not hit a dud yet (ftr : back in black, let there be rock, high voltage, if you want blood)

I was surprised they never did a farewell tour, but perhaps one is imminent, as apparently they are playing a one-off (for now) show in California with a bunch of ol' Monsters of Rock vets.

Always loved the way that Cliff Williams essentially stays out of the way of the real rhythm section, which is Malcolm Young and Phil Rudd.

Every musician in this band is part of the rhythm section. Someone I know used to say of AC/DC, for all its no frills, no fuss, meat and potatoes philosophy, the band is always in tune, and always in time.

I think of AC/DC* as the electric equivalent of the Count Basie Orchestra, and Malcolm was their Freddie Green.*with Phil Rudd, that is. Without Phil, they’re too stiff, they don’t swing, and the rhythm section doesn’t breathe.

Just heard Thunderstruck used as a cue on NPR, and for a second was sure that meant someone had died. :(

AC/DC were a huge band for me when I was a kid. I got into them because of Maximum Overdrive. But I was very Brian-centric and only knew the biggest hits of the Bon Scott years. Anyway, I was listening to Rose Tattoo the other day and it inspired me to dig further into 1970s AC/DC. I mean, I don't need to tell anyone that High Voltage is an amazing record, but I'm always glad when I find something awesome to catch up with.

Powerage is the 70s record I return to the most (though obv I celebrate the whole catalog) mostly cuz its light on hits but mostly cuz it's like if I told you "Oh yeah the Stones made a record between Sticky Fingers and Exile that's just as good but no one talks about it"
The early Johnson era stuff is so great and maybe a little underrated now?
― chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:44 (one year ago) link
The band I was in did an AC/DC covers thing for a NYE and we specifically focused on the Brian Johnson era stuff cuz it wasn't as "cool" but we did a deep dive and really practiced the material (like more then we normally would for own shit, natch) but so it gave me a renewed appreciation of those songs and Johnson is a fucking incredible singer, to sound like he does and do it LOUD is a lot harder then you'd think
― chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 23 August 2023 15:49 (one year ago) link
we had a confetti canon on stage and sync'd up "For Those About to Rock" with the midnight countdown so "FIRE!" came right at midnight and it would have been awesome but our bass player kinda step on the touchdown call cuz he thought I was going to blown up by the confetti canon so he pulled me away and can you tell I'm still pissed about it haha?

Apparently Cliff is back, but Phil is out. :(

I guess it's kinda hard to guess where Rudd's head is at given his history
― Blues Guitar Solo Heatmap (Free Download) (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Wednesday, 13 September 2023 14:48 (one year ago) link
Fun fact: Rudd was the only Australian born member of the blockbuster era.
― Josh in Chicago, Wednesday, 13 September 2023 17:45 (one year ago) link
but overall with this band I think the joy of relistening as a longtime fan now is that there is a lot of joy in their music, and how the fun IS that it’s not really “about” anything. And lately for me on a musical level, marvelling how the whole rhythm section is *so* locked in, solid as a fucking rock, with these perfect spaces to support Bon’s showmanship, or Angus’s solos, or fuckin bagpipes or whatever
it’s a thing of beauty imo
Booming post, cosign 100%.

There is a 2 part ABC documentary about Alberts LTD which covers from the 60s with the Easybeats through AC/DC that is on Youtube that is worth a view. It is like many of these RNR documentaries but the Australian view point is pretty novel to me, especially seeing some of the other acts covered in the show like Rose Tattoo. The part where Young and Vanda was using drum tape loops to make tracks was interesting.

First tour since 2016, I guess. But just Brian and Angus as anchors. No Cliff or Phil.
― Josh in Chicago, Monday, 12 February 2024 14:29 (nine months ago) link
Phil Rudd has not toured with them for fourteen years tbf (four years before his meth / murder-for-hire legal complications)(and Cliff retired from the band aged 67, so not touring at age 74 for an album that he popped back to record for a few weeks in 2018 is not much surprise)
― bae (sic), Monday, 12 February 2024 17:14 (nine months ago) link
And Malcolm is dead. I know *why*, doesn't make it much better. But Cliff did play with them at that Power Trip show back in October, so there was a possibility.

Aw man why is this thread not called "AC/DC C/D"? Someone really slipped up there.
