Awful nme-style name but you should know what I mean (Miss Kittin, Fischerspooner, Tiga and Whoever-it-is, et al). So, any cop? Personally, I believe Fischerspooner to be ugly artless chancers (anyone see the piece in the Guardian comparing them to the KLF?! Not even close...) and the work of Miss Kittin to be sublime (Sylvia Saint fronts Kraftwerk, can anything compare?). But I am relatively ignorant in this field and would like you people to tell me how to think. I thank you...

And what does the aforementioned Miss actually look like? She's not a Peachesesque hound is she?

Miss Kittin looks vastly prettier than Peaches, don't worry. I too think that her records are the best of the bunch: the Hacker LP, the Golden Boy tracks (esp. 1234) and the Felix tracks. her version of Je t'aime...moi non plus with Sven Vath is not impressive though. Even the people who revere F/spooner will readily admit that their album only has about 3 actual songs. Who else is there? Adult are pretty good but slightly samey, I like the little Crossover I've heard, and keep an eye out for The Feline Dream, Pretty and The Vichy Government.

Doesn't seem possible to read a discussion about Peaches without some (usually male) negative comment on Merril Nisker's physical appearance. Eg some tw*t in this month's Jockey Slut:

I was really into the album. Then I went to see her live and I though she'd be a real babe and she's not, she's a moose. So it detracts from the music.

As though a woman in her 30s, who doesn't resemble a photo-model (like 99% of us), means she's not entitled to be overtly sexual. Not sure whether to be annoyed, or enjoy, their displeasure. Fuck the pain away kicks serious ass btw.

Though having said that, it doesn't really fully spoil the enjoyment of the music - just a touch disappointing (like the time when you were 14 and first saw what Frank Black really looked like). Anyway, most amusing image of the day (re:"Not sure whether to be annoyed, or enjoy, their displeasure") is of some pursed-lips guy, stood at Peaches gig, smirking at all those bawdy males NOT getting off on Peaches sordid show. I loved the fact that Frank Black was this shouting fat bloke - it added an extra spin of the unexpected to the Pixies' music (also his subject matter was real revenge-of-the-nerds stuff). It's much worse now he looks exactly like the music he makes, i.e. plodding check- shirt bar bore.

Peaches looks fine, it's the music that I don't like. And yes it's impossible to read a feature which doesn't mention her looks (even the positive ones go not-conventionally-attractive) - it's also impossible to read one which doesn't slaver over her presumed bravery in being a woman singing/performing about sex. Assuming this is true, why is this still a big deal in rock/pop?? - it implies a degree of sexual conservatism which the rest of pop culture and society seems to lack.

I'm affronted! How DARE you speak on behalf of all Mancs. Being a big main Manchead I say that Electroclash is rather respected up here with the grunting locals. And then you go on to dismiss Romo?! My good god, Orlando and Sexus might have been the only decent Romoey acts out of a big pile of shit, but two good bands is surely enough for the scene to regarded with a touch of fondness and respect. And they all wore suits. And used brass. And did a song where you can hear loads of hangers-on in the studio, clapping and cheering along like ALL the greats (Dexys, Miracles, umm..). Um, yes, Electroclash. People say "Fischerspooner only have three good songs etc" this is almost correct but also totally irrelevant. They have one AMAZING song, they don't need anymore - haha, they celebrate this fact by doing Emerge THREE times during their gigs. Most punk band since Daphne And Celeste.

Adult have great songs but it all gets a bit much after more than a few minutes. Same for Miss Kitten.

I feel like electroclash never really lived up to its promise... you had these Larry Tee events, bands like W.I.T. who weren't actually very good.. and you had some really excellent stuff, a lot of which is documented here. But there was this feeling I had in New York at the time that somehow rock and electro were combining, that acts like the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Fischerspooner and Felix Thee Housecat and The Knife and Chicks on Speed and The Rapture were going to swirl up a new kind of music, and I guess they sort of did, for awhile, but.. well I don't know what I'm bemoaning exactly. A lack of institutions? Some sort of structure or movement that carried forward?

Mmm yeah… it did sort of feel like “here is the next configuration”, and I saw a bunch of young bands that were something like an Iggy glam front person and two Korgs. It filtered into other scenes, early Glass Candy, Lost Sounds. But it hit the shredder of the blog era where everything is a rabbit hole and nothing is a new wave.

The kids are revisiting “indie sleaze” which has slight overlap w electroclash but also includes things as late as like 2010.

I know I’ve heard Stardust in heavy rotation on some mainstream American radio stations, Daft Punk probably was too — but it was the house D.P. not the electroclash (if there even was any?)

I saw Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem put on some great shows in America but I missed the part where they were in heavy mainstream rotation at all. Granted I basically stopped listening to stations that might play them but am I wrong?

The thing is, Janet Jackson had hits over house beats in the early 90s. C&C Music Factory surely charged higher back in the day than LCD Soundsystem ever did ffs. House has been a normal part of America pop for a long time. Electroclash never was.

Maybe my definition of electroclash is a bit wider than most, but it felt like this, the Two Lone Swordsmen album 'Tiny Reminders' and the 2ManyDjs mix were all instrumental in setting some sort of electro-flavoured agenda for the years to come and arguably defining much of the sound of the 2000s.

So while electroclash as a minigenre was short lived and faddy, I don't think things like LCD Soundsystem, mid-2000s electro-house, hell even something like La Roux's 'In For The Kill' would have been as big as they were without that little electroclash match doing a bit of trickle-up

That nabisco post is great (and that Futurism mix CD on City Rockers probably is the best album in the genre).

2ManyDJs is a good call as well - there seemed to be a lot of overlap between electroclash and other trends/scenes like mashups or the punkier end of the NY indie rock stuff (e.g. ARE Weapons who were a really poor man's Suicide from what I can remember). Definitely an influence you could hear in later '00s UK pop too e.g. Goldfrapp or say 'Something Kinda Oooh' by Girls Aloud.

Electroclash’s greatest triumph was, to my mind, not any particular band or album or song but rather the creation of the “open format” club night: the DJs revelled in a lack-of-any-particular-genre-consideration and happily play Joan Jett into Le Tigre into The Gossip into “Losing My Edge” into Human League into Sex Pistols and then a band would play (Shychild, Erase Errata, one time Vazaleen in Toronto got ESG up)

Also there were lots of bands doing the electroclash “thing” prior to it becoming a Larry Tee/Vice Magazine phenomenon— adult. in particular, but also Stereo Total and Add N to X and maybe Ladytron and maybe Trans Am

What I liked about electroclash at the time was that there were more women and gays in that scene than any other, also it was all possible because rent wasn’t yet an affront, playing music wasn’t just for rich kids

I think there was a general um “lack of critical oversight” regarding what was happening, which was good at first, but a lot of contributing factors kinda killed it:

- Fischerspooner started charging too much for their bad shows
- the Rapture made a weird bid-for-rockstar-status album and it was bad but inexplicably Pitchfork named it AOTY
- James Murphy was delivering the best tracks I guess but also the least-interesting thesis
- smoking ban
- rents went up

Hard agree and it's what connected me to club culture to begin with. I was in very beardy things I'd only loosely call raves as a yoof, but when I moved cities and it was all just "upscale" "techno" events I felt extremely alienated. Finding audiences who were willing to be receptive to the excellent stuff I experienced as a teenager was liberating and helped me feel free to be me and out in a deeply regressive area. I can't stand the aesthetics, music, or styles (for the most part) these days but I'll be forever grateful to this idea, to Optimo and 2 Many DJs especially, for giving me a vision of a path towards self-expression.

I recall a funny story I might’ve already posted, but in 2003 or 2004 in NYC I went with friends for a night out. We knew about five odd parties that night and we had a plan, one of our crew knew every bouncer and so we were able to skip right in without question. My friend Michael, as we left his place, said “there’s a new rule. If Chloe Sevigny shows up, we have to leave the party immediately.” We laughed and agreed. This wasn’t a judgement against the ubiquitous Chloe, more of an arbitrary rule to ensure we kept up the pace. Chloe was at the first party we arrived at and we quickly finished our drinks and left for the next. Chloe showed up to party #2 about 45 minutes later, and again we booked it out of there, chuckling

it is true that the comp above is more sort of... soulseek-era dance-inflected rock or the inverse. also a good few things that were much later than electroclash and not electroclash. the bonus vinyl has emerge which i guess is maybe the only undeniably 100% electroclash track on the entire thing? calling the rest a broad brush selection would be generous. doesn't mean it's bad music, tho imo some of it is, but spanning nine years and acting like that was one scene might make for a nice faux-academic compilation title but it makes for a p shit comp.

also it's not like the myriad brilliant electroclash mixes of that time are lost to the sands or something, i guess as the last few years of cd comps selling a lot it was a sort of golden age for well-curated, nicely produced commercial dj mixes. there are absolutely loads of good ones and they are not hard to find. tho obv branding something as 'x y and z 2002-2009' has become a thing of its own now even if you could just fire up youtube and 'study the actual texts'.

mostly a much better list, praise the robot, but some weird choices. also basically anything after 2005 is not electroclash and that's p generous. i was gonna say 2004 but 'do i look like a slut' confounds me as i am sure i heard that before 2005, way before, i feel like.

a lot of stuff on there that has nothing to do with it too, like how is house of the jealous lovers electroclash? it may have been played at the same parties but it obv isn't that. same with vitalic tbh which i never thought of as electroclash and, since it came out in 2001, was being played by like hard techno djs before it went overground. i am sure i saw like billy nasty or someone play it before i knew what it was.

that's the thing i guess about these scenes, prob heard a lot of tracks off that felix da housecat album played by a fairly wide range of djs and then when it became 'electroclash' some people are abandoning ship cos can't be associated with something popular/hard-coded.

la rock 01 was 100 per cent a big track in all clubs that followed electroclash or even during that era. but lots of other odds and ends were gathered into it, like some french house was also but that's also not electroclash. not really policing a definition here more just think electroclash, almost unusually for a dance music genre, is actually quite a small territory and fairly easy to define.

sonically, I’d say the early/peak IDIB sound was a bit of a retreat from the brashness of Ed banger etc shit in the indie dance world, more soft focus, more compressed frequency range

I feel like dance music contracted a lot in the early 00s with clubs closing etc and all that dance is dead stuff, which was a silly media thing but clearly it stopped being a presence in the charts or whatever. This had a slightly counter effect of everyone huddling together to watch DJs who were playing prob the widest range of shit ever, and a lot of past and present and future all thrown together.

Then once everyone was back in, and I always think fast broadband and stuff was a huge factor of spreading all the good stuff, it's prob settled back into the genre boundaries of old, maybe not entirely like the past but like to some extent, and obviously deep house becoming the dominant thing for years and years sort of reflects that.

yeah “indie sleaze” is trying to describe a broader scene / timeframe than one specific music genre — a bunch of years’ phases of clothing style, parties that mixed ec-era dance music with live music, plus bands and bloghouse that spun off of them. five years looks coherent looking back 23 years in a way that felt like many distinct 2-year things when living through them.
