The LP on NNF is the fist real official jam. I guess there was a 7" or two before that? I like it well enough but... not all the time. If you guys like this I would also suggest checking out the "Dolphins Into The Future" LP.

A lot of this sounds like he's jamming directly over Thai music. Or sometimes like he just threw a bunch of distortion on some of that stuff. I'm not complaining. There was a period after I got back that it was the only kind of music I wanted to listen to. My friend got this CD that has 30 min songs where they just jam the fuck out on like one or 2 chords with electric 3 stringed guitars (forget their name). Sounds totally like it could have been made by jap or wburg noise kids.

anyway i'm not max or anything but i think it has lots of appeal beyond the lofi recording aspect, much like nite jewel, the tunes are top notch and would be great regardless of the recording context. i agree alot of stuff like this suffers by making the lofi aspect its only virtue, but at the same time "overplayed cassette" wooz and hiss is to me pretty refreshing after hearing so much immaculately produced music over the last few years

so the ducktails dude also does real estate right? cuz the real estate album is really great. i haven't kept up much with in vogue beachcomber seaweed indie but i like this a lot. there are def songs that sound like the shins but i think it's got a very CCR quality about it imo, laid back, backwoods guitar strumming kinda thing

Made a mix for my friends at the Bakery centered around the Real Estate "Fake Blues" 7" It also includes "Let's Rock the Beach" by Ducktails. They were listening to it today when I got my lunch!

A few weeks ago he played a really good set with a drummer (not sure who) here in Auckland. Slow quiet improv, about what I expected his songless stuff would sound like (I'd only ever heard Be Mine Tonight). I think he's living in New Zealand again. No clue, aside from that.

Real Estate wouldn't sound out of place entertaining the evening beach crowd at the Myrtle Beach Holiday Inn. And I mean that as a compliment.

Really liking the two Real Estate 7"s so far, particularly "Suburban Beverage". Need to get ahold of some Ducktails stuff.

Yeah I thought about going to that, but with all the Pitchfork fawning over Girls, I'm a little wary of the annoying crowd this might draw.

Saw Real Estate @ The Funhouse (Seattle) tonight. Really nice, and a good deal more propulsive/energetic than I expected. Drummer & bassist hammer the tunes surprisingly hard. Reminded me of a bunch of different stuff: surf music, the "rhyming guitars" of Pell Mell & Love Tractor, a sort of John Frusciante version of late Pavement (plus they had Malkmus clothes), even Dire Straits. Only knew "Fake Blues" and "Pool Swimmers" going in, off a Woodsist 45 I picked up a while back, but I liked just about everything they played. Bought a copy of the new LP off them, which I'm listening to now. It's excellent, though much more relaxed & dreamy than the live show.

Band afterwards was Pill Wonder, who sounded too much like Animal Collective for my taste, so I split. A guy shooting hoops in the rain told me about clown cults in Italy, and how they used to eat people and terrorize them and so forth. The red mouth of the modern clown supposedly symbolizes the bloody jowls of this hideous cannibal clown ancestor. I dunno. Is this true? Did there used to be clown cults in Italy, and did they used to eat people? I would like to think so.

The internet provides little to no evidence supporting the existence of cannibal clown cults.

Okay so I've fallen really hard for Real Estate, but I'm not sure I can say the same for Ducktails. Backyard didn't feel like anything I'd really want to return to.

add note - i also picked up a real estate "live on the radio" lp at that show, which is much more like what i thought they'd sound like live: a clean, bright, unreverby version of the studio stuff, with a v understated rhythm section. looses some of the melancholy psychedelia, but still nice back porch jams. nowhere near as revelatory as woods' "acoustic family creeps" radio session ep.

I really like the new album, even if it has veered more towards Real Estate territory than his previous albums (i.e. more "songs" and less textural, for the most part). Fair warning though, I'm a sucker for this particular vibe right now.

I really, really like the new one. I get why its kinda divisive, I can see how people who loved the bedroom sound of the self-titled or Landscapes might be put off by how crisp and smooth this is. But I dig how it kinda hits the midpoint between Real Estate, Ford & Lopation 80s sounds, and like Kaputt era Destroyer.

This guy totally lost me A dud in every sense of the word IMO. No identity.

hadn't heard these guys before, but i like the latest release, especially the duets with the lady singer. i take it it's kind of a departure from the other stuff?

Well he started out doing pretty lo-fi, fuzzy guitar based stuff, but subsequent releases (esp 2011's III) saw him meandering a little closer to Real Estate (his other band) territory. this one is a huge leap in sound quality and collaboration. the Ford & Lopatin dudes also show up, there are a lot of guests on this.

it's pretty good! especially like the "letter of intent" tune.

i dig this. i'm very happy that the pointless sax solo has made a comeback.

I like Planet Phrom (apparently a cover, he played it at Woodsist Fest and credited the songwriter, can't remember who) off Flower Lane. and Killin the Vibe is all time. other than those standouts though I think I liked Ducktails better when it was more distinct from Real Estate. (maybe not coincidentally my opinion of Real Estate went way up in the meantime, Days was fantastic ... didn't really get into the debut much)

Anyone else at the Lexington show last night? Phenomenal stuff; the new material is so much better live; looser, freer etc. And Matt Mondanile's guitar work was absolutely sublime. Could happily listen to him puttering about for hours.

Flower Lane grew on me. it's pretty cool, especially the first half.

Flower Lane is gorgeous. What Pitchfork listed as a defect of Ducktails -- Mondaile's preference for surfaces over substance, the fact that his songs do not "cohere" as neatly as Real Estate's songs do, for instance -- I think is one of his great strengths. If the songs felt like they were "going somewhere" they wouldn't have the magical, meandering quality that they do.

Best Ducktails, imo.

it's hard for me to choose between this one and arcade dynamics, which is an album that make me happy whenever i listen to it. i think they accomplish different things.

Is there another thread dedicated to Ducktails' new album, St. Catherine? I thought there'd be more fans. I didn't even realize this was released until now. Listening. Reviews seem tepid, but I loved the last two albums, so...

this one is kind of growing on me, but as of yet i'm still listening to it more out of loyalty to magic first impressions with the last one than for what it does on its own

Calling someone out over their Twitter likes is a bit unfair though as I know a lot of people who use it as a bookmarking system rather than for agreeing with a Tweet's sentiment.
