NO NO NO NO NO not the juggalos or whatever but the Instant Composers Orchestra led (though there may have been some dispute over that, not sure) by Misha Mengelberg.

Josh, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

AKA the ICP Orchestra (name later to be taken by career-nadir faygo-snorting clowns when they record an album with the CSO)

on 'jubilee varia' the cellist heckles his own band!

on mengelberg's 'two days in chicago' ab baars plays the most beautiful ugly solo (or the ugliest beautiful solo, I'm not sure) I've ever heard on 'body and soul'

Josh, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if you're talking about the Insane Clown Posse, I reckon they're a really dreadful act who look like stupid wankers, and have no merit what so ever, but that's just my opinion.

Andrew, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

He's not.

jess, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

i interviewed misha mengelberg once

mark s, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Mark-yeah, your article on him is cited in the Misha entry in the european improv page.

One item in his discog that interested me was his 'Two nights in chicago' db CD on Hoatology. Anyone heard it?

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''on mengelberg's 'two days in chicago' ab baars plays the most beautiful ugly solo (or the ugliest beautiful solo, I'm not sure) I've ever heard on 'body and soul'''

Is that a recommendation?

Julio Desouza, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like how they can play "inside" with great poise and polish, and then go "outside" and do something completely unexpected. A very high caliber of musicianship and a unique sense of wit. Search: Bospaadje Konijnehol 1, a set of Ellington tunes plus a suite composed by Mengelberg.

o. nate, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yes yes yes it is, julio. I would love a copy myself. :(

jess, it's kinda... supposing there were a line between 'in' solos and 'out' solos, baars just keeps wavering back and forth over that line. it's hard to explain. see if you can find the track online!

Josh, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if I remember correctly at least half of 'two days' is mengelberg solo, which is also great and fascinating (I think the notes say something about 'monk meets satie' which makes some sense); anything with a larger group is definitely worth getting beause of their amazing sensitivity at improvising. it lets them navigate the in/out split beautifully.

Josh, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've always wanted to hear them (or any big band with Han Bennink on drums!).

On a related note, did anyone hear that new Mengelberg quartet album with Han and Dave Douglas?

Jordan, Wednesday, 12 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

jodran, they played in st paul! I did not get to go

This was the overarching storyline behind the act the whole time. They started out as regular gangbangers who were pulled turned into supernatural thug clowns by the Dark Carnival to warn humanity to give up their evil ways and embrace Jesus. No I am not kidding; it's pretty explicit when you follow what they've put out from beginning onwarads and even at their most depraved, they've always been on some "you're getting fucked up because you've done wrong" shit.

i mean, again, i know this sounds like jaded whiney whatev. but serious question:

why is everyone (on waaaaay more sites than ILX) acting like they've never seen a juggalo before? ICP is all of sudden a hot, followable hipster meme in 2009-2010 when like the clown existed way before most people even had the internet.

Lift Your Skinny Jeans Like Antennas to Heaven (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:14 (fifteen years ago)

At age four, Joe and his brother caught a butterfly, and both were fascinated by the vibrant colors and overall peacefulness of the creature.[2] They kept the butterfly in a jar overnight, and intended to free it the following morning. When they awoke, the brothers found the butterfly had died, and felt as if they had committed a murder. The brothers made a vow that "one day, [they] will make it to heaven, so that [they] can [...] apologize to that Butterfly face-to-face."[2] On every Insane Clown Posse album and EP it reads "Dedicated to the Butterfly" because of this vow.

modern eunuch-like crooning (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 9 April 2010 16:24 (fifteen years ago)

The answer, Whiney, is because most people actually haven't seen a Juggalo before. Most people just heard about the Disney controversy and tuned in for The Great Milenko which was kind of okayish and The Amazing Jeckel Brothers which was eye-bleedingly terrible, went "lol talent-free fatties" and went back to whatever they had been listening to at the time. Internet forensics and the trend to pour back over things ten to fifteen years old to laugh at them combined with the bizarre longevity (driven largely by the positive message underneath all the nonsense IMO; a shit-ton of CCM folx could learn a valuable lesson here) and the impossible-to-ignore visuals are causing the current Juggalo craze. It's not really rocket science.

Been wondering about this more lately. Are ICP embraced at all by the CCM universe? From my completely removed perspective, the biggest failing of said universe seems to be the relentless candy-coating of everything; for all that ICP's lyrical insanities are no less melodramatic they at least kick against the stereotype, however unfair, of CCM as nothing but lovey-dovey nonsense.

the juggalo who took our Wurlitzer also got excited when he saw we were throwing out some old air conditioner parts, as he had some "projects" with pals where they might come in handy. da croupier, Friday, 9 April 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

Also ICP does a lot of weirdo subversion of their own schtick, like they have a lot of rampant anti-intellectualism running through their stuff sitting right next to "oh btw my ass got straight As when I did my schoolwork"; they're setting up this paradigm of book learning not being particularly important so it's okay if you're not good at it, but it's also okay if you ARE good at it because hey, they were too. why is everyone (on waaaaay more sites than ILX) acting like they've never seen a juggalo before? ICP is all of sudden a hot, followable hipster meme in 2009-2010 when like the clown existed way before most people even had the internet.

My guess is they only really became hipster lols when violent j became lol fat violent j. also making the christian thing even more noticable than the songs about fucking decapitated obese children in the anus but still doing both added to the clusterfuck.

The most amazing thing about the Juggalo movement IMO is how people point and laugh at it, but whenever you read accounts of people actually spending time with these people they're all along the lines of "holy hell, I have never actually spent time amongst a more upbeat, friendly and helpful group of people in my entire life". Like, ICP is actually making folks into better people through ridiculous clown makeup and terrible music.

two weeks pass...

From the "Hatchet Herald"

I don’t know what Webster’s definition of the word “miracle” is, but we’ve always thought it meant something fuckin’ amazing and incredible. A fuckin’ special, awesome event of some kind. A great, wonderful thing. A fuckin’ miracle.

The song “Miracles” is classic ICP. Our listeners know we’ve always included one or two deep, meaningful songs on our albums, we’ve just never made a video for one until now. It was a good idea, obviously, ‘cause it’s got people talkin’. The truth is it don’t make us mad to see all the hate “Miracles” gets from the mainstream. We’ve been “The Most Hated Band in The World” for many years. Without all the hate on the outside, it wouldn’t be as warm as it is on the inside with the Juggalo Fam. Instead, all the hate “Miracles” generates makes us sad. Sad for the haters.

I mean, yeah, we get it. It’s funny to people on the outside lookin’ in, seeing two clowns rapping about space and shit, while floatin’ around in an orgy of screen savers. And SNL’s parody was off the hook hilarious. But when you step back and really look at all the genuine hate it got from everyday people, it’s hard to believe that so few got it.

Yes, most of the miracles we mention can easily be explained away by science, that’s why we say the line “fuck scientists.” Their factual findings sometimes explain away the Earth’s cool mysteries. Part of me wishes they were lying. Part of me doesn't want to know how they really make crop circles. My imagination wants to believe it’s aliens or somethin’. If people can’t relate to that, then that’s their loss. I mean, seriously, it must truly suck to have no imagination about these things. Us Juggalos have deep imaginations, and an awesome sense of humor.

As for the infamous line, “fuckin’ magnets… how do they work?” Magnets were like magic to me as a kid. You could move things across the table without actually touching them! I found that shit amazing and I still do. If you don’t like that, have a dick for dinner. As for the sun and the stars. Who looks up into the sky and doesn't wonder sometimes? Come on, man, I fuckin’ straight up feel sorry for anybody that can look at the moon the trees, and the seven seas, and not see fuckin’ miracles. It’s not about religion either. Nature itself is a miracle. Stand toe to toe with the ocean at night and tell me that shit ain’t amazing.

We appreciate all this shit. Especially a yellow ass, long neck giraffe. What’s a shame is how people walk around blind to it all. They lost their spirit about everything. If you can’t even see the miracle in animals, then you must have never truly loved a pet. That has to suck for you. Maybe you mother fuckers should relax that wound up, extra tense bitch ass of yours for a minute and go smoke a joint or somethin’.

Be an individual, step out and away from the flow of the crowd. Take a time out, open up ya mind and then peep the giraffe. Try to appreciate some of these miracles, bitch.

What’s a miracle is the fact that some people haven’t recognized by now that Insane Clown Posse will never die. ICP will go down in history as an independent music miracle. Get used to these ugly faces. MMFCLJ.

man these guys are on point lately:

Violent J: I know the stuff isn’t really miracles. I think we might have misused the word miracle. I think that might mean something that has happened with no explanation. These things we mentioned in the song, they can all be explained. But what we’re doing is appreciating them. Even the infamous line, “Magnets, how do they work?” I mean, yeah, we know how magnets work. But they’re still incredible. You can push something across the table without touching it. And as a kid, I found that fascinating. I still find that fascinating. [laughs]

Shaggy 2 Dope: Come on, a rock that pulls metal towards it or pushes it away? Yeah, it has to do with the magnetic polar caps and [stuff]. But for real? Come on, man. You’re just holding a U-shaped thing that pushes metal away or attracts metal or something. The North and South Pole makes a rock magnetic, and if you touch a piece of metal with it, that becomes magnetic? That’s crazy.

Violent J: I grew up in Detroit. We don’t have pelicans on every corner. We don’t have giraffes walking down the street. Anybody ever stood next to a giraffe, tell me that’s not a miracle? This thing that’s yellow and polka-dotted, spotted, it has a dinosaur neck? If you look at a giraffe and think, “Well, they’ve been here for millions of years, no big deal,” that’s your loss, man. I feel bad for anybody that’s numb to all that.

Shaggy 2 Dope: At the Detroit Zoo now, you can feed the giraffes. Last week, I took my kids and a friend to the zoo, and it wasn’t open. I was like, man, I want to feed a giraffe. Getting that close to some crazy-looking animal that only lives in Africa and Detroit? It’s not every day you just get to marinate with a giraffe, man.

Violent J: To me, I’d rather be the dumbed-down guy appreciating everything than the guy who knows everything and doesn’t appreciate [anything].

Sugar Bear (Shaggy 2 Dope), a streetwise detective from San Francisco, is brought to New York City by its chief of police (John G. Brennan) to take down Big Baby Sweets (Violent J), a notorious crime lord who controls the entirety of the city's criminal underworld. With the help of Officer Harry Cox (Harland Williams), a wildly inept patrolman, as well as some timely assistance by Dolemite (Rudy Ray Moore), Sugar Bear sets off to bring down Sweets' evil empire. This task is made difficult by Sweets' entourage: his ineffectual right-hand men Big Stank (Jamie Madrox) and Lil' Poot (Monoxide Child), his personal security ninja Hack Benjamin (Robert Bruce), a pair of stealthy Magic Ninjas, and Cactus Sac (Mick Foley).

"A college professor took two days out of her fucking life to specifically attack us," says Violent J. "Oh yeah, she had it all figured out."

One of the ICP road crew locates the video on his iPhone, and it is indeed withering: "The Miracles video is not only dumb, but enthusiastically dumb, endorsing a ferocious breed of ignorance that can only be described as militant. The entire song is practically a tribute to not knowing things."

"Fuck you, man," says Violent J. "Shut the fuck up."

"Did you anticipate this kind of reaction?" I ask them.

"No," sighs Violent J. "I figured most people would say, 'Wow, I didn't know Insane Clown Posse could be deep like that.' But instead it's, 'ICP said a giraffe is a miracle. Ha ha ha! What a bunch of idiots.'" He pauses, then adds defiantly, "A giraffe is a fucking miracle. It has a dinosaur-like neck. It's yellow. Yeah, technically an elephant is not a miracle. Technically. They've been here for hundreds of years…"

"Thousands," murmurs Shaggy.

"Have you ever stood next to an elephant, my friend?" asks Violent J. "A fucking elephant is a miracle. If people can't see a fucking miracle in a fucking elephant, then life must suck for them, because an elephant is a fucking miracle. So is a giraffe."

VJ: Look at the "Miracles" thing. We don't think that was funny. That was us trying. That was us doing our best.

S2D: It's so funny. I said this to a couple of different people. To me is funny because if, say, Bob Dylan would have came up with that song, people probably would have been, "Oh, shit, man! That's the bomb!" You know what I'm sayin'. But because we came up with it, they're, like, "What assholes." [Bob Dylan's much-admired "Every Grain of Sand" is in fact very close in subject to ICP's "Miracles."]

In 1998, Joe suffered a series of panic attacks that went undiagnosed for a while. First he thought he was dying, and then his brother suggested he was being attacked by demons. He eventually was diagnosed and started taking medication, but it was making him very fat (Joe has the naturally intimidating figure of a wrestler or bouncer), so he settled for therapeutic weed and long, meditative walks in the Michigan forest.

"Back in '82, ahem, 1782, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote a piece that's been left out of the spotlight ever since. The title of the piece is 'Leck Mich Im Arsch' or literally translated to English as 'Lick me in the arse'. Understandably this piece has figuratively been swept under the rug. So who better to give this piece it's due respect than the wildly successful, much misunderstood, and divisive Southwest Detroit rappers Insane Clown Posse?

"With fellow Southwest Detroit-born Jack White at the production helm and musical backing by Nashville's very own Jeff the Brotherhood, this 2011 version of 'Leck Mich Im Arsch' marries Mozart's melody (and lyrics sung in operatic German) with ICP's poignant lyrical addition in English and Jeff the B’s monster-riffs, letting the whole thing tie together in the most beautiful of ways."

1 - it's important to remember that these predominantly nihilistic knuckleheads may claim to have been brought together under the aegis of social connection and community but that they're really there because they're consumers of horrible processed foodstuffs, sugar water and some spectacularly unredeemable music

2 - cut off the roads and the concession stands and i give these guys three to four days before they start killing and eating each other

i dunno man, there seems to be a real sense of "world's going to shit, grab what you can" going on among juggalos.

i havent dared step in to the suburbs thread but i can't help feeling all "get out of NYC for a day or two, bro".

juggaloes are a cross section of america's poor in the flyover states that have rallied around a musical movement.

⚓ (gr8080), Sunday, 9 October 2011 02:36 (fourteen years ago)

lol, i spent 25 years growing up in a "flyover state" mr. kamakawiwoʻole
it's not america's poor, it's people who like shitty music
i have similar distaste for phish phreaks

ok bro granted, this is still an ILM thread, but this revive is about a 23 min documentary that is 0% - 1% about their music

⚓ (gr8080), Sunday, 9 October 2011 04:36 (fourteen years ago)

eh, you're probably right. i really wanna like these kids more than i do i guess. they're just really depressing to me.

loads of personality, loved to chase chickens (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 9 October 2011 04:37 (fourteen years ago)

i'm not disagreeing with you!! i'm just saying that eating + drinking garbage is ~america, man~

⚓ (gr8080), Sunday, 9 October 2011 04:38 (fourteen years ago)

oh they're mad depressing, but my point is that you can look at juggaloes as a silver lining to a much bigger and more depressing group/culture

⚓ (gr8080), Sunday, 9 October 2011 04:39 (fourteen years ago)

well the people who make a big deal about NOT eating/drinking garbage are derided as effete hipsters!
can't win for losing
wait, the juggalos are the silver lining to the worst generation? plz explain (and plz stop saying "juggaloes")

Violent J, who formed ICP with Shaggy 2 Dope, told HuffPost in a series of texts that he found Wood’s description to be inaccurate.

“I can’t believe TheAtlantic.com would hire a writer, presumably for his expertise in journalism who’s that off the mark, as well as an editor for his or her fact checking abilities who obviously lives within a reality separate from our own when it comes to defining who Juggalos truly are and what they’re about,” he wrote.

Unlike Trump, ICP also showed leadership in the fight against the coronavirus. The group canceled its yearly Gathering of the Juggalos the same month the president was downplaying the virus.

“The bottom line is that we REFUSE to risk even ONE Juggalo life by hosting a Gathering during these troubling times,” ICP tweeted last April.

Daniel Dale, a reporter for CNN, tweeted that covering the 2017 Juggalo protest “was the most pleasant reporting experience I’ve had in Washington. The Juggalos were unfailingly, sometimes comically friendly.”

That description is a far cry from the pro-Trump protest on Jan. 6 that eventually devolved into an insurrection that left five people dead, including a police officer.

In a follow-up text on Tuesday, Violent J said he was hurt to see Wood’s mischaracterization of the Juggalo community.

“The truth is it fuckin’ hurts and [it’s] scary seeing professional adults acting like savage bullies,” he said, noting that ICP fans make “easy targets because they’re so misunderstood.”

He added: “sad little bullshit like this makes me question the media in general and [lose] a little faith in just about [everything] I fuckin read!”
