Songs with YOUR Name in the Title

Are there any good ones? Do you hear them and think, "Hey, that's my name"? Does the fact that they contain your name make you like the song more or less?

Mark, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a woman in my office named Wendy, and I think of the Beach Boys song when she walks by. Another woman is named "Peg," and it's ditto w/ Steely Dan.

I cannot think of any songs with Mark in the title, though. Anyone?

Mark of the Beast

There's one that about Mark Robinson, although I can't remember the title or artist. It's on a split 7" with Unrest's "Yes She Is My Skinhead Girl."

j, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

JuliA by the Beatles (I know there's a bit of cheating involved here but...)

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I've heard John Lennon's "Julia" often enough that any recognition factor has worn off. There are other song titles containing my name, but I don't think I've heard any of them.

(Allmusic gripe: It would be useful if you could search for song or album titles by words other than the first.)

j.lu, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Mark E. Smith & Brix" by Barbara Manning.

http://gygax.pitas.com, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Hey, Hey Paula" - not necessarily perfect until you take into consideration that my middle inital is "A" and I get mail addressed to "Paula" all the time.

paul, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Mark'll Sink Us" by The Fall

http://gygax.pitas.com, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's a manitoba song called "brandon" (my first name). i never thought i'd see my name in a song. spelt correctly too!

dyson, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Adam's Song" is my favorite Blink single... (yeah, that's my real name)

Keiko, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

'mark' - shed 7.

I was the Singing Nun. Now you know.

dleone, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Julio: How about "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard"?

Surprisingly few songs with "Dom" or "Domenico" in the title. Wonder why.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

What do you think of these songs? Do you like the fact that your name is in them? (Songs about Mark E. Smith do nothing for me; nor does "Mark of the Beast.")

Mark, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like the Blink song.. but not as much as "Mark of the Beast"...

Keiko, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Surprisingly few songs with "Dom" or "Domenico" in the title. Wonder why.

How about "100 Dom" by Boredoms?

Poor Nitsuh.

"When Nitsuh Sleepy Time Down South", by Louis Armstrong?

Curt, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Hardly related at all, but I was a religion major in college, and whenever someone mentioned the concept of the "historical Jesus," my brain would automatically sing those words to the tune of "Detachable Penis" by King Missile. Whatever gets you through those 4 years, I guess.

Nick A., Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

first person to find a song with 'geeta' in it gets a cookie!

geeta, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sleater Kinney - Words and Geeta

Leee, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gilbert Becaud's Nathalie. I still have old farts thinking they can woo me this dreadful POOP song - a vomit launch is a more likely reaction when someone starts singing it .

nathalie, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

This runs up against a thread I've been thinking of starting lately -- about the single-person character-study or love-song about a woman (or actually hahaha "girl") being such an embedded (androcentric?) pop-music trope that there really are none about men; even when women write them they write them about women. Off to start thread!

nabisco%%, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To Brandon: I'm assuming that Manitoba fellow named his song after my hometown, which is in Manitoba, and not after someone named Brandon. It's a very nice place, I can assure you, though it does tend to make people want to leave (me, Sean Carruthers, Mae Moore, etc.).

Bryan, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''Julio: How about "Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard"?''

Dom: Who did that? Never heard of it!

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oddly enough, that Manitoba CD also has a song called Dundas, which is the hometown of one of my Toronto friends. We both had the CD, which meant that we both had an ode to our hometowns on it! Neat! (note: Mae Moore was apparently not born in Brandon, but was certainly raised there from very early on, and I think she left around age 6.)

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Dom: Who did that? Never heard of it!
Ladies and gents, it's rhymin' Paul Simon!

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fleetwood Mac’s Rhiannon - blame my hippy parents. Although I like the Celtic vibe it evokes.

Rhiannon, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Lots of examples for me: "O Baby", "O Canada", "O Christmas Tree", etc.

o. nate, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Boredoms - Cory & the Mandara Suicide Pyramid Action or Gas Satori

chaki, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Gilbert Becaud's Nathalie. I still have old farts thinking they can woo me this dreadful POOP song - a vomit launch is a more likely reaction when someone starts singing it .

"Natalie, Natalie, I wanna see yr anatomy, baby... I'm tortured by yr logic & yr beautiful hands..."

As for me, uh, "Victor" from Eat to the Beat.

Vic Funk, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

By the way, to answer the question, a couple of tracks by John Lennon with his son's name in the title. Two that I know of named simply "Sean": one by Proclaimers and one by Everything But the Girl. I'll take the EBTG song, thanks.

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

''Ladies and gents, it's rhymin' Paul Simon!''

I think I'm gonna be sick!

Sean-What did you think of Murray street?

Julio Desouza, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's that bloody Elton John song, and a goofy Bruce Springsteen out-take. "I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky, lucky" as a wise woman once said.

Daniel_Rf, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The only ones I know of offhand are Borbetomagus & Voice Crack's extremely dubiously titled collaboration "I Want To Be a Black Weightlifter Named Douglas" and Bitch Magnet's "Douglas Leader." Supposedly there's a Hawkwind song called "Douglas in the Jungle," but I've never heard it.

There are songs by the Clean and God Is My Co-Pilot where they mention me by name in the song, though...

Julio: that particular Paul Simon song is actually pretty good.

Douglas, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There are a trillion songs with "James" in the title.. But the one that's in my head at the moment is the the one by the Bangles on their first LP... "lettin' me down again.. James"

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

ya, i love my song - "brandon". love manitoba too, used to live there aswell - the province that is.

dyson, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I cannot think of any songs with Mark in the title, though. Anyone?

There's one that about Mark Robinson, although I can't remember the title or artist. It's on a split 7" with Unrest's "Yes She Is My Skinhead Girl."

"Mark Robinson," by Graverobbers. I've been told that the sleeve is more entertaining than the song.

j.lu, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Louie Louie" has always annoyed the hell out of me.

lou, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark'll sink us is as pretty fucking spookily close as anyone is likely to get

mark l. sink s, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a Bauhaus song called "Lagartija Nick" that someone once taped for me, but I can't remember it.

And I'm featured (but not named) in the name game song - "Nick Nick Bo Bick, Banana Fanna Fo Fick, -Niiiiick."

nickn, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah Mark S I heard that and thought, "So that's where Sinker got his name from." Figured you liked the Fall and all.

Mark, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

there's a couple of old 50s songs with my name in, i don't know who they're by but one goes:whooo please stay with me dianaand one is called "my diane". and lets not forget "dirty diana" by michael jackson.

queenoftheharpies, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Frank Zappa's 'Andy'. ;)

Andrew, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

yeah we have done it before but: The Coasters, Link Wray, Bob Dylan, Alice Cooper, Leonard Cohen, Juicy Lucy, Spaceman 3, The Straitjacket Fits - all in the title or chorus, and Boston (I see my Maryann walking away) and the Dictators (Maryann is in love again for the second time this week) in the verse.

maryann, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I forgot John Hore.

maryann, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Bakhtin wrote an essay called 'Marianne.'

maryann, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's probably some old folk song called "Old Ned of the Gloaming Hills" or something like that. Er.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 13 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

The Mekons have a song bearing my name although I've never heard it.

byron the bulb, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sonic youth's eric's trip

erik, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

If I have one more middle-aged asshole break into song about how I'm their brother I'll strangle them.

Dan I., Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All I prefer the Half Japanese song by the same name, "Calling All Girls" by Rick Springfield has those really great "Colin Colin Colin..." background vocals.

Colin Meeder, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

All = Although.

Colin Meeder, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There, there, my dear - Dexy's

Doesn't have Robin in the title, but the song is about Robin. Bonus points coz its an ace song too!

Robin, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Fly, Rockin' Robin, Fly.

I just found a song by New Model Army called "225"...

.. About 600 "Dave" songs...

Dave225, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Sort of similar-ish thread on ILE.

Jeff W, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Ground control to Major Tom...

Mark, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Nicknack-paddywack, Give a Dog a Bone".

Nick, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Happy Birthday Mr. Christian" by Apollonia 6. Better still if you can track down the outtake version which features Prince's guide vocals, which somehow make me wetter than Patricia Kotero's. I'm straight too.

PossumSlimm, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"harry is the one i think you'll marry...but its CHRIS that you kissed after school." - not in the title but its me name.

Chris, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"William, It Was Really Nothing" - The Smiths. Ace.

Dom - what about that old Domestos ad? 'Big Bad Dom'...

Mr Swygart, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

being a closet jack, 'jack and jill' remains my all-time fave song. such melancholic ennui in the relationship metaphor 'jack fell down/ and broke his crown' but romantically uplifting, but ultimately tragic as the ever feral jill comes tumbling after, in a shockingly devotional act of selflessness.

Barnaby, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't come up with a single song with my name in the lyrics (even spelled the 'normal' way). Anyone know of any?

Justyn Dillingham, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

...comencing Countdown, engines on....

Mark, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Just in Time" - Just in Time
"Justin" - NSync
"Justine" - David J.

Dave225, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, a bit of catchup:
Julio - Haven't gotten hands on Murray Street yet...it's out? Yikes.
Dyson - Where were you from in Manitoba? Wpg, I'm guessing?
Mark - "Clown control to Mao Tse Tung!"

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'll take the EBTG song, thanks.

I wasn't aware of this one.

Sean, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"jesse's girl"*

(*ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHH HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!)

jess, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And "Jesse" by Roberta Flack.

Mark, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

But she didn't write that, I don't think. Did you ever get that tape?

Mark, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Janis Ian wrote "Jesse". Is this the point at which being a record geek really gets embarassing? I don't own a Janis Ian album, btw.

Sean, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And what's up with complaining about your name song being "Jesse's Girl"? We should all be so lucky!

Mark, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

mark, yes i did! good god, that's terrible of me that i never confirmed that. how do you like the boredoms cd?

and "jesse's girl" not a bad song per se, but "YOU ARE NOT THE FIRST PERSON TO MAKE THAT JOKE IN FRONT OF ME AND MY GIRLFRIEND."

jess, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Oh, and "William Tell Me" by Seedling. Which isn't as good as The Smiths.

And if we're being picky, then yes, "The William Tell Overture". Though I don't really want to be associated with the world's most common and, as such, irksome mobile ringtone, thank yer very much.

Mr Swygart, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

And don't forget the Who, Maryann (with your shaky hands).

nickn, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord"

Lord Custos v2.3_hv, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

To help Ned out: Ned Kelly, by Johnny Cash. I suspect that there may be criminal associations here.

For me: Abraham, Martin & John (Marvin Gaye/Smokey Robinson), Martin's Story (Minutemen), Tribute To Martin Luther King (Loving Sisters), and Silence... Recorded At The Gravesite Of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King (PM Dawn). You may spot that being named after the same old protestant* as one of the 20th Century's most adored figures helps the connections.

*Actually I was named after my grandfather, who was named for Martin Luther.

Martin Skidmore, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Thanks for that reminder about the Who. It would be great if I could have enough songs for a whole record! Who else has that many songs? I guess it would be a girl. Jane probably has a few because it's a name that lends itself to jokes and is the female equivalent of 'John.'

maryann, Friday, 14 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's a Frank Zappa album with my name in the title. It's called, "Freak out".

Anna Rose, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Martin - I can't believe that you of all people could have omitted the classic Soft Cell track "Martin", about a schizophrenic who "sleeps with all the lights on" and "has a family history".

As for me, I cannot imagine anyone would have released a "Darren" song unless it was some kind of oh-so-funny 'comedy' record about some second-hand car salesman who lived in Essex (not that I've got a chip on my shoulder, or anything !).

I used to get friends singing "Karen" by the Go-Betweens with my name substituted for the title - "darren, yeh yeh darren, yeh yeh.."

Darren, Saturday, 15 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

anyone got a keith song?

Keith McD, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I can't think of one, but maybe someone could write one for you. "Keith, don't paint your teeth..."

electric sound of jim, Sunday, 16 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

sean: it was winnipeg, i was real young tho. what would really impress me even more than having my name (brandon) in a song title, is to have it used in a song and have something rhyme with it. ya.

dyson, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

There's "Keith Don't Go" by Nils Lofgren.

Arthur, Monday, 17 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

seven months pass...
I was named after 'Alexis' by James Gang (and Marc Bolan?) ..I don't know any other songs with the name in it.

also: that Manitoba CD also has a song called Dundas - isn't the guy called Manitoba FROM Dundas, Ontario?

Alexis, Friday, 17 January 2003 03:30 (twenty-three years ago)

I think the Manitoba dude is from the UK.
I've got the latest one downstairs, but I ain't getting it to check. It's on Domino though.

Horace Mann (Horace Mann), Friday, 17 January 2003 03:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Gary's song by AMC, it always seem to fit.

"if we sit here and drink enough beer
we'll be two inflatable dolls in a hookers bad dream..."

and before the barndance guitar solo

"...and i think i just came in my pants
aw, baby did you wanna da-a-a-ance?"

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

Thankfully, no one has ever pulled that joke on me, too obscure. But I do get a whole lot of "Oh my god, they killed Kenny." Which is NOT cool.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Friday, 17 January 2003 07:41 (twenty-three years ago)

'Sweet baby James' by James Taylor. Used to hate that song as a kid.

James Ball (James Ball), Friday, 17 January 2003 09:57 (twenty-three years ago)

"Wave of Mutilation" - The Pixies has a line it it that goes "could find my way, to Mariana" which surely refers to the trench, but I'll take what I can get.

I also found a religious folky record that has a song called "marianna" on it - or at least the cover of the records is MARIANNA written in a sorta gothic font.

marianna, Friday, 17 January 2003 10:26 (twenty-three years ago)

Rainer Maria have a song called "Ian" though I haven't heard it.

Ian Johnson, Friday, 17 January 2003 22:40 (twenty-three years ago)

Sublime - "Evan Is A Nazi"

There's GOT to be something out there better than that.

Evan (Evan), Saturday, 18 January 2003 00:45 (twenty-three years ago)

"Tony's Theme" by the Pixies (Dan's right! I'm a SUPERhero!)
"Anthony Boy" by Chuck Berry

evidently some jazz dude name Kei Akagi has a song called "Tony M." but he may be referring to the New Power Generation rapper who moaned about 23 positions in a one night stand on "Gett Off".

And I still assume that Rod Stewart is saying "Every Picture Tells A Story, Tony!" at the end of that song.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 18 January 2003 00:57 (twenty-three years ago)

My dad used to tell me he named me after that Hollies song "Carrie Anne" (I'm a Carey Ann). But he also used to tell me he named me after the Stephen King book Carrie. But then again my older brothers names are Larry and Jerry. And then again, I guess I don't have an exact song.

Carey, Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:08 (twenty-three years ago)

You were named after Harry Carey.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The only thing that comes to mind is "Ballad of Curtis Loew". Hmm...

According to AMG song search:

Carey, Saturday, 18 January 2003 01:35 (twenty-three years ago)

a song with my name in the title? FUCK THAT SHIT!! there's a band that uses my NAME as THEIR name ... and they're a mighty big band at that.

(or didn't you know that TAD is short for TADEUSZ?)

Well, who could forget Paul Simon's "Call Me Al...............ex in NYC"

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 18 January 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

one month passes...
Before I ever heard Prince, I saw that he had a song called "Darling Nikki", which is my name (Nikki, though I have an aunt named Darling). I was intrigued. When I saw my friend had the LP, I said, "Hey, you know that Prince has a song about me?" He laughed for quite a while and then played it for me, it was a very funny and awesome moment. It made me like the song about a dozen times more that I heard it in this context.

There's also a 12 Rods song where he repeats "Nikki you touched me" and a dude put that on a tape for me. It's an okay song, my name added no special significance to it.

Fivvy (Fivvy), Saturday, 15 March 2003 21:31 (twenty-three years ago)

I've had lots - first of all I was named after two of the lamest singer-songwriters of all time (and no, not "Roger Adultery" - you figure it out) so that already puts "Sweet Baby James" in the category - also "James" by the Bangles (it's about some guy named James letting them down...again) and that song by LA Style, James Brown is Dead - I had the CD single when I was a kid and some asshole traced the cover on the blank side of the cd cover and wrote "James Toth is Dead" with the cartoon of the grave. Very funny.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:11 (twenty-three years ago)

There are lots with James in the title (could only find the one Nikki in my collection, except the sort-of cheating 'Doc Hope (Nikki Lauda's Turkish Chemist Mix)' by Full Moon Scientist). I have:
Bobby James - NERD
Brother James - Sonic Youth and Big Joe Williams
Elmo James - Chairmen of the Board
Feeling James - Fresh Gordon
Hear Me James - Woodentops
I Feel Better Than James Brown - Was (Not Was)
I'm Bad Like Jesse James - John Lee Hooker
Jackin' James - Jack Factory
James - Lloyd Cole
(lots of James Bond Theme versions too)
James Brown Is Still Alive! - Holy Noise
James Ray - Crystalites
Jesse James - Pogues
John & James - Toots & the Maytals
King James Version - Billy Bragg
St James Infirmary - Louis Armstrong, Bobby Bland, Lou Rawls

You're not related to the godlike Alex Toth, are you?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:21 (twenty-three years ago)

I'm sure there are at least several songs with my name, but I can't think of any good ones - at least one monstrosity by Michael J comes to mind, and the Elton J one suffers from my great dislike of the artist. There's a great David Murray one, but that's about a specific person with my name and I'm not a history-making tenor sax player.

However, Bob Dylan's "clothes-line saga" takes place on my birthday. I've always been excited about that.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:26 (twenty-three years ago)

martin

can't believe i forgot about Brother James. Of Course! and "(Have you Met) Horror James" by my all time favorite band Royal Trux - the friends of mine I like best refer to me as such in email form.

not related to alex toth (what band was he in again? some quirky rock duo?) but am related to Peter Steele, Vincent Gardenia and baseball great Ed Lynch.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:28 (twenty-three years ago)

The Furious Five's Cowboy has the same birthday as me, which I find pretty cool, too.

Back on topic: Outkast, "Nathaniel"... aaaaaand that's about it.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Saturday, 15 March 2003 22:32 (twenty-three years ago)

There's an Elton John song called Gabbneb?

Alex Toth isn't a musician - he's my all-time favourite comic book artist.

Nate, there is the Supremes' Nathan Jones and the great Reverend Billy C. Wirtz has one called Nathan Lee.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:10 (twenty-three years ago)

The Leader of the Pack's name was Jimmy, I don't know if that counts for you, James - but it's pretty cool.

Ally (mlescaut), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:14 (twenty-three years ago)

There's an Elton John song called Gabbneb?

No, the EJ song contains another form of my first name (which has nothing to do with "gabbneb"). The song also has to do with "Jets".

Nate - there's also Joni Mitchell's Nathan LaFraneer

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 15 March 2003 23:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I've only ever heard one - bowies cover of the Pretty Things' 'Rosalyn' - and I don't like it. Boo, hiss.

Zora (Zora), Sunday, 16 March 2003 18:19 (twenty-three years ago)

there is the Supremes' Nathan Jones

Well damn.

Nate Patrin (Nate Patrin), Sunday, 16 March 2003 18:44 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate Ben Folds Five but "I Wanna Be KATE!" is just about the best crush song ever written. Too bad no one ever sings it to me. Except my friend Cat, but that doesn't count.

kate (suzy), Sunday, 16 March 2003 18:51 (twenty-three years ago)

There are a bunch more, but I like to stick with 'Beautiful John' by Madder Rose...

mookieproof (mookieproof), Sunday, 16 March 2003 18:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Zora, there is Rosalind by the Creepers, and Rosaline by Lolita Storm - close. Too many Johns to list. Kate, have you heard Sharingalokate by De La Soul?

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Sunday, 16 March 2003 19:32 (twenty-three years ago)

two months pass...
it's not in the title but, "her brother don't like me, thinks i'm a fag/he's got me all wrong i just wanna DO that RAG" ("reggae reggae" by the real kids)

d/rag, Monday, 26 May 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

One of (the brilliant) Nick Cave's biggest hits is titled with my first name. And if anyone makes any wisecracks about my possibly being the first female ever named "Henry Lee", I will deck you.

That's about the only song I can think of. I'm currently too lazy to look up anything anywhere.

Dee the Lurker (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 01:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I am in a quandry. I love Pet Sounds, but I HATE (I'm using the word "hate" about a song here) Sloop John B.

Johnney B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 10:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I will always have a soft spot for Rickie Lee Jones, since she wrote her biggest hit about me.

chuck e., Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:07 (twenty-two years ago)

"Kate" always reminds me of this girl I dated for two weeks in college who was named Theresa. Stoner girls seemed so attractive in those days.

As for me personally, "It's A Shame About Ray" by the Lemonheads. A nice enough song, unfortunately ruined for me by a burnout from 10th grade biology who used to sing the song to me over and over again in a mocking way before I could get the record and get into the band. Whenever I hear it, I'm reminded of that dude.

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 27 May 2003 15:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Believe it or don't: Evan Parker's Monkey Puzzle has a track dedicated to my august majesty.

veering a little from the thread premise, i just found out that there's a dancehall mc called mitch! he's got a track called "crazy girl" on a new riddim that i don't know the name of!

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 22:20 (twenty-one years ago)

has there ever been a less likely name for a dancehall mc?

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 30 November 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

weird psychc connection, ilm. last night my friend played for me the ween song "sarah". it's awesome. so glad to have a properly spelled namesake song!

Well, my name IS a song title! And a fine song it is, too, more rocking and far less cloying than, ahem, "Watching Scotty Grow" by Bobby Goldsboro. (Yeesh!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Saturday, 11 February 2006 15:57 (twenty years ago)

The Beatles' "Doctor Robert" has my name. It may be the only song that does though, as Robert doesn't really flow well in a song. Nicknames such as Bob or Bobby might be more common.

Sharon's Song - Joni Mitchell
I Ain't Sharin' Sharon - Bobby Darin

I found a song on Allmusic called "Attack of Sharon on the Herbovore" by Dogslyde..alas, no audio...

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 12 February 2006 03:58 (twenty years ago)

oops, I meant 'Song For Sharon' by Joni.

VegemiteGrrl (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 12 February 2006 03:59 (twenty years ago)

seems like every susie/susie q song is really irritating and cheesy. I can't think of a Susan song, but it seems distracting to have your name called out while trying to enjoy a song.

Susan Douglas (Susan Douglas), Sunday, 12 February 2006 04:06 (twenty years ago)

one of the first songs i liked by myself was "charly" by prodigy.

Vintage Latin (dog latin), Sunday, 12 February 2006 04:08 (twenty years ago)

There are several, but my favorite is the Smiths, "William, It Was Really Nothing."

Susan, there's a very nice Country Joe and the Fish song called "Colors for Susan." (I've only heard the Henry Kaiser cover.)

I just did a search on the itunes music store, and I found a song called "Matthew" some shmaltzy adult contemporary singer named Denise Jerrido, and the lyrics included the line "you are going through an emotional time."

There was another song called "The Same Man (For Matthew)" by an acoustic folky type named Rachel Loy.

I also found a lousy rap song called "The Book of Matthew."

Matthew C Perpetua (inca), Sunday, 12 February 2006 05:29 (twenty years ago)

Susan, there's always "To Susan On The West Coast Waiting" by Donovan and the bona fide chart topper "Susan" by the Buckinghams. Both worthy. Take a bow.

Hank Williams' "Too Many Parties, Too Many Pals" contains my surname.

brianiash (briania), Sunday, 12 February 2006 06:24 (twenty years ago)

I've heard John Lennon's "Julia" often enough that any recognition factor has worn off. There are other song titles containing my name, but I don't think I've heard any of them.
(Allmusic gripe: It would be useful if you could search for song or album titles by words other than the first.)

eurythmics "julia"

"Brother Rapp" by James Brown. Always makes me happy when I see the record standing somewhere.

Tobias Rapp (Tobias Rapp), Sunday, 12 February 2006 11:41 (twenty years ago)

Susan, there's also the appalling "My Name Is Not Susan" by Whitney Houston. Maybe I could claim that one, since my name isn't susan either.

I searched the thread, before posting, to find I had mentioned the first three already

RJG (RJG), Sunday, 12 February 2006 19:49 (twenty years ago)

Well, neither of my songs are particularly complimentary - the Vaselines did "Oliver Twisted" ("inevitably careless, hated rock'n'roll, he had no soul"), and then there's "Oliver's Army" by Costello. Still, I like both songs. Better than hearing my sister sing that fucking "Oliver!" song over and over when I was 7 or so.
