Deftones: Underrated?

Message Bookmarked

I've spent the last few hours scouring the net for reviews of Deftones albums, only to find that most reviewers don't seem to take the time to really listen to the albums in their own right, ignoring the deliberate and painstakingly crafted sound scape, only to lump them in with "nu-metal" (a label they spit out with heavy disdain) Is there more to Deftones than simply who they hung out with when they first started? Are they a band that will be name checked by future innovaters? Can we blame them for emo? Should they go on if bass player Chi, in a coma since an auto accident in early November, never recovers? Am I the only one who even cares?

divorcedalcoholicloser, Monday, 2 March 2009 02:05 (sixteen years ago)

Deftones are pretty good, man...Spin did make the switch around 2001 from characterizing them as nu-metal loseurs to calling them the Smashing Pumpkins of the genre...theyre not the best but they have some undeniably good songs...

I like them a lot and White Pony has to be one of the best rock albums of the decade.

yes, i would say they are probably the most underrated band of the last 10 years or so.

They do have a really great drummer.

I feel this. I put on White Pony once a year or something just for nostalgia and end up getting really excited

I started this thread because I wanted to hear other peoples opinions about our boys and I couldn't really find that many reviews online. I myself have been an obsessive fan for a good ten years and wonder how anyone could not think they're amazing. Each album progresses from the previous in a way that's an unexpected direction, but one that totally makes sense Their production is thick and awesome. What's not to like?

divorcedalcoholicloser, Tuesday, 3 March 2009 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

i always wrote this band off as lame and couldn't tell the difference b/w them and Korn without ever actually paying real attention to them. ILX was actually the first place I read that they might have more merit, and that was mainly from UK people, where I think their critical reputation is higher than in the US. sadly I tend to associate popularity in this musical format as hand-in-hand with suckitude. I was wrong, White Pony is pretty great.

I always thought the Deftones were an indie rock band, possibly new wave-ish (which is to say that I guess I don't really have a clue what they sound like, but that's what their name looks like).

Brian C, Thursday, 25 March 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not a huge fan of "overrated/underrated" discussions tbh but I think Deftones are simultaneously over and underrated, just by different populations.

My metalhead breathren were wont to dismiss them as Korn clones, which even when they did play a similar style, they definitely had their own personality. And less likely to check out albums like the s/t or White Pony.

However, being someone who liked both those albums, I can say that it never really went beyond a strong "like", not a "love". I think they do what they do well, but I've never heard anything of theirs that captivated me or took me to the next level.

So I guess I'm saying they're rated about right in my eyes.

Usain Bolt Cola (Cattle Grind), Thursday, 25 March 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

"Change (In the House of Flies)" is my favourite song from White Pony.

Sundar, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 01:55 (fifteen years ago)

"back to school" is indeed bad but it was an alternate version of one of their songs which was tacked onto a "re-release" of White Pony:

"Back to School (Mini Maggit)" was released as both a single and as an EP package; the single was released shortly before the EP.

Vocalist Chino Moreno: "This album right here [the White Pony re-release] is not the album that we turned into the label. As far as we're concerned, the first edition was the record. Done. Then they talked us into re-releasing it with another song on it, and it's not like I'm against the song or whatever, but I liked the sequence we had when we first turned it in. When this version came out, a little part inside all of us felt like: 'Fuck! We just totally compromised.' And I know that a lot of our fans felt bad about it too."[1]

i've heard the new album once, not enough of an opinion to cast judgment on it yet

regarding "white pony." if i've ever needed an album to remind me of where i was musically/emotionally that year as an upstate high-schooler involved only with what was heard on FM radio, that album is it

That's such a fucking lame excuse. If they were truly awesome they wouldn't mind whatever song the label picked as a single. Stop creating music that makes you feel ashamed.

Moka, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 06:06 (fifteen years ago)

Chino's pretty good at coming across as a doofus in interviews...I also wish he wouldn't scream "Squeal like a pig!" throughout their cover of "Say It Ain't So."

ILM/music critics aren't the world, but certainly in those worlds the Deftones are far from underrated. in fact, they seem to be the only nu-metal band in those worlds that gets positive mentions at all (which is interesting in itself).

since no-one gives a shit about nu-metal anymore, though, i guess in that sense they are underrated.

keine Macht für dich mehr! (Eisbaer), Sunday, 23 May 2010 14:46 (fifteen years ago)

It's the main thing that's impressed me with meeting them all several times. A lot of bands pay lip service to having interesting taste in music but Deftones really know their shit. Chino and Frank (DJ) especially. They'll talk to you about Coldcut, Three Six Mafia, Slayer and Aphex Twin.

Super nice guys as well. Awful business with what happened to Chi. He is a gent, y'know.

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:30 (fourteen years ago)

i dunno, i like them alright - but this new one seemed to drag on for what seemed like forever. there's few very solid tracks - but overall i wasn't blown away.

got electrolytes (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:32 (fourteen years ago)

think the last few tracks are stronger than the first few tbh - the songs are pretty short, can get thru it easily

acoleuthic, Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

ya - when i say dragged on i just mean it seemed that way - alot of the tracks got really same-y sounding to me. i didn't mean anything was actually long.

got electrolytes (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:48 (fourteen years ago)

think this album dips a bit in the 8/9 position but then rly picks up again for the last 4 - mebbe w/o those 2 songs it'd be more palatable and wd even seem more varied - no biggie tho afaic

how's life, Monday, 15 April 2013 16:37 (twelve years ago)

just from various band promos/interviews that I had read from a decade ago, Chi was kind of what I figured I would've been like had I joined one of the metal bands around here and they'd hit it big: quiet and affable, and just constantly having his nose in a book. I'd read somewhere that he'd been working on a novel...I have no idea if he'd ever finished it or if anything had come of it, but I always thought that was cool...

Drugs A. Money, Monday, 15 April 2013 18:15 (twelve years ago)

or, on second thought, maybe not what I thought I wouldve been like, but more what I would've wanted to have been like...I have been in a band before and even at the local level, the whole self-aggrandizing 'rock and roll dream' schtick gets really thick, so opting to be off in a corner reading in the face of all this seems like a very good look to me

xp to hows life: if you're interested in getting into the deft ones I would probably start out with White Pony, followed quickly by Around the Fur...White Pony is def loaded up with great moody goth pop, whereas Around the Fur, which is just before it, has more of a metal vibe. Lots of great tracks on their first one, Adrenaline too: Bored, Root, Engine No. 9. Lots of ppl rep for their last two, and they're dece, but Adrenaline/Around the Fur/White Pony are def canon.

Don't know much about the s/t or Saturday Night Wrist; I've heard lots of mixed reactions to Saturday Night Wrist. I should probably check it out

I just had a geek moment and realized that the way the special red edition of White Pony displays the track times but not the titles on the cover is a nod to the packaging of Hum's Downward Is Heavenward.

Anyway I also think the s/t record is underrated, so many jams and probably their two best guitar-free tracks.

can't believe divorcedalcoholicloser isn't on ilx any more

Szechuan TV (Noodle Vague), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:21 (nine years ago)

i have time for this band but the idea that the honourable gentleman divorcealcoholicloser flouts in the op, which ive heard repeated often, that they are lumped into nu-metal because of "who they hung out with when they first started" is just wrong: they have rap metal songs, there are a number of sonic similarities to other bad and hated nu-metal peers in their music, espesh in the first two albums, i saw them tour with linkin park and taproot 13 years after they formed the band. just embrace the fact that you like a nu-metal band ffs.

uncle tenderlegdrop (jim in glasgow), Wednesday, 16 March 2016 21:29 (nine years ago)

saying "they have rap metal songs" is p misleading though, they've recorded precisely zero of those in the last 15 years

Why does it feel like this album is getting much more hype than their last one did? Is it just simply a timing thing due to people being nostalgic for NuMetal or are some publciation trying to make up for the fact that they ignored the last one?

one year passes...

well so much for that lol

anyway, big new interview in Kerrang re: the new album, fair bit of detail in there. the album is out....soon, apparently.

“We’ve always made Terry quit,” chuckles Abe. “It’s kind of our thing. We make him quit every record. First record? He quit. Second record and White Pony? He quit. Self-titled? He quit. And this one? He almost quit! He’s like a dad… And you don’t want to piss dad off. We can make his glasses fog up so quick. He bites his lip, his glasses get steamy, and we know we’re at that point! There’s always that goal of, ‘Let’s make ol’ TD quit!’ A lot of times he would just quit to get us on our toes.”

If it’s true that no producer has loyally suffered more at the hands of what Abe jokes is Deftones’ ability to “excel at lagging” than Terry Date, it’s also true that no producer has harnessed the beauty and fury of Deftones’ music like him. Their latest outing is a testament to this.

Despite Abe’s jokes, Deftones clearly put the work in: a band hyper-focused on delivering an album to fall in love with, not just one epic lead single. Recorded at LA’s Henson and Seattle’s Trainwreck Studios, it was fuelled, Abe says, with the usual stimulants of “coffee, juice, good beer, laughter, a little piss’n’vinegar, but a lot less tequila”. Together with Date – who is constantly praised by Abe and Chino throughout the conversation – they worked on 12 tracks, with 10 making the final cut.

“A lot of bands say, ‘We wrote 6,000 songs for this record and chiseled it down for you, the fan!’” jabs Abe, playfully. “You didn’t write 6,000 fucking songs, man!”

The ones they did, they paid forensic attention to. The opening track, for instance, which begins with a gorgeous synth passage from Frank, had a complete overhaul. The screamed vocals you will hear were first demoed at Chino’s house over Christmas when he decided he didn’t like his initial approach on the song as it had already been recorded. Picture this: Chino – a preternaturally gifted vocalist – demoing his new take by whispering his screams into the mic so as not to disturb the people in his home. Stunning moments mount up: one song starts with a bassline so rapid Sergio Vega’s left hand probably has no fingerprints left.

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:34 (four years ago)

bits of that album remain elusive to me but in an appealing way, it was interesting to read about Stephen Carpenter's slight distance towards it

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:36 (four years ago)

gore is bafflingly underrated by ppl for not having enough riffs? even though it is absolutely packed w/ fuckin riffs

it has the best ending of any deftones record, the last three tracks are such a ride

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:38 (four years ago)

it is definitely packed with riffs! my theory is that the slightly airier production, which is not as monolithically heavy as KNY, tricks people's ears

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:41 (four years ago)

carpenter's issues with gore didn't make sense to me when i actually heard the record (ofc, then chino and carpenter were quick to be like "that's just the nature of us making art with each other and three other people, is we will sometimes butt heads over the direction the thing takes" and that definitely makes sense to me)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:43 (four years ago)

yes they definitely have a complex set of inter-band relationships! (retrospective lol at Chino sitting out the making of Saturday Night Wrist for seemingly ages)

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:45 (four years ago)

i think that's the most underrated one. certainly the mathiest they ever got. notwithstanding the last minute of "pink cellphone" is the worst part of their catalog. combat -> kimdracula -> riviere... another unbelievable ending

also it's better than adrenaline

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:48 (four years ago)

haha I was just about to say I think that one has their best run of closing tracks! and "rats!rats!rats!" one of their finest grooviest freakouts

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:51 (four years ago)

my unpopular opinion is that of the run of incredible records they've been on since around the fur, the s/t is my least fav. feels very disjointed despite the individual songs being great. the intensely creepy atmosphere they get on "deathblow" and "battle-axe" never really comes back? but an album with both "when girls telephone boys" and "anniversary of an uninteresting event" aka when an album contains both hardcore and slocore... it's just a little much. "moana" prob my least favorite deftones closer too even though it's a great song

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:53 (four years ago)

but "deathblow" and "battle-axe" are like walking into a room in someone's house and it's entirely empty except for the chains swaying from the ceiling... real hellraiser horror movie vibes

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 14:55 (four years ago)

I need to relisten to all three of their 2010s albums because I can't remember a note of any of them. I liked Saturday Night Wrist better than the s/t, though.

got impatient and searched out the new song and holy shit

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 15:24 (four years ago)

someone compared it to devin townsend and yeah the riff is very ocean machine

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 15:30 (four years ago)

feeling blessed to get something like this and the new hum record in one otherwise terrible year

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 15:31 (four years ago)

oh lol I forgot you can get around region blocking

yeah this sounds really different, melodically speaking. this was the "comically big" riff discussed in the Kerrang piece I guess? it fits.

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 August 2020 15:34 (four years ago)

Been listening to Gore for the last hour and the guitar solo on "Phantom Bride" is one of the cheesiest things I've ever heard not coming from an Italian symphonic prog band or an '80s AOR power ballad. I literally gasped.

but also fuck you (unperson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 16:05 (four years ago)

I think I gasped the first time I heard it as well. pretty wild that it's the only guitar solo in...their entire discography?

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Thursday, 20 August 2020 16:08 (four years ago)

that solo rules, thank u jerry cantrell

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 20 August 2020 16:13 (four years ago)

relistening to KNY as it's the only one I have on vinyl; it sounds pretty good considering they crammed 51 minutes into a single LP!

Spottie, Thursday, 20 August 2020 17:07 (four years ago)

I generally like them well enough but have trouble telling their records apart (even their songs tbh). Maybe a tad good monolithic and compressed for me.

great song.
also, 'koi no yokan' is their best album, imo

Nourry, Friday, 21 August 2020 10:24 (four years ago)

I have no be honest, not a fan of the new album cover. reminds me of mudvayne

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 21 August 2020 11:20 (four years ago)

That is a Big-Ass Rock Song. Almost reminds me of Antenna-era Cave In.

but also fuck you (unperson), Friday, 21 August 2020 12:17 (four years ago)

yeah I can hear that. the major keyness is unusual for them.

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Friday, 21 August 2020 12:28 (four years ago)

relistening to saturday night wrist the other day made me realize it's their first album that really reaches the level of space rock

could def hear an argument for it being their best; i thought it was their best when it came out, but then of course they released diamond eyes and koi no yokan both of which i like more

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 August 2020 13:40 (four years ago)

but like nothing on previous deftones records sounded like "beware" or "xerces"

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Saturday, 22 August 2020 13:43 (four years ago)

they always sound like them but I do like ezrin's angle

unpaid intern at the darvo institute (Simon H.), Saturday, 22 August 2020 14:14 (four years ago)

it is sort of amazing how uniform deftones records are (10 to 12 songs, 46-52 minutes, many w the same producer) and yet no album is particularly similar to any specific other

Long Stereogum review of the new album by Luke O'Neil, whose Welcome To Hell World emails I skim until I can't stand it anymore (usually 3-5 paragraphs in). Looking forward to hearing the whole album.

but also fuck you (unperson), Monday, 21 September 2020 14:13 (four years ago)

Stereogum is great for its headlines, but read any of their write-ups at your own risk; some of them are so unbelievably cringey they actually feature phrases like “this music RULES”

beamish13, Monday, 21 September 2020 14:15 (four years ago)

Stereogum is great for its headlines

strongly disagree

billstevejim, Monday, 21 September 2020 18:44 (four years ago)

stereogum is good for the genuinely admirable breadth of what it covers, mostly not for the writing

anyway, I'm stoked for this. a "very good Deftones album" would be more than good enough.

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 24 September 2020 19:21 (four years ago)

so far (up to "Pompeij") this sounds like a less obviously hooky KNY. tons of weird chord progressions.

really enjoing it.
'pompeji' is an immeditate highlight.
and am I the only one who thinks of... no doubt while listening to 'headless'?

Nourry, Friday, 25 September 2020 14:21 (four years ago)

occurred to me this is the most well-integrated the different sides of their sound have ever been. there's never a moment where the riffs clear out for something purely meditative and gorgeous like "sextape," "entombed" etc. it's just crushing and beautiful in countervailing waves, all the time. think they had a real breakthrough here

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 25 September 2020 19:47 (four years ago)

"urantia" is the best

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 25 September 2020 19:48 (four years ago)

“Pompeji” into “This Link is Dead” is great.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 25 September 2020 20:06 (four years ago)

This is such a great album, I've ended up listening to it all day. One thing that stands out is that a lot of the vocal melodies (e.g. 'Urantia') seem atypically bright and hooky for them.

my honeymoon period with this one is giving me the exact feeling koi no yokan did at the time: they put out another masterpiece

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 15:48 (four years ago)

today i think "headless" is the best song. so much of this record sounds like their entire discography enfolded into single songs, and this one kinda migrates from the s/t to saturday night wrist in the verse/chorus and then slips backward into an odd time signature like all of my favorite stuff on diamond eyes

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 29 September 2020 15:57 (four years ago)

xxp.there was a response chino had during an interview for this album where he danced around the “both sides” issue that had me wary of his views.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Friday, 13 November 2020 13:53 (four years ago)

From the vulture interview this year:

No matter who you are or what you do, I think most people deal with that dichotomy in life, having days of feeling like you’re your better self than others. I’m a work-in-progress. But yes, the song is acknowledging that. But it’s also about being frustrated with the times and how everybody, not to be so literal, because it’s not political or whatever — but it’s like everybody’s right. Everybody has an opinion. Everybody’s barking at each other through the fence, and it drives me fucking mad. I don’t want to have to pick a side. I want balance. I want to be able to make a decision that doesn’t have to go along with any one side of any argument. You know what I mean? That song actually also speaks to that, I guess, whatever. Everything is so polarized.
