Um. It's been really interesting hanging out on other boards to see how they handle things. It's been really interesting, and really weird.

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:20 (sixteen years ago)

And on the few other boards I post on regularly, I've never seen anyone complaining that it's a boys club or that girls are too scared to post on it. That's peculiar to ILX it seems.

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

Well, of the other boards I'm on...

Board 1 has pretty much been destroyed by one individual that the mods either can't or won't do anything about - lots of old time users have been driven off by the antics of this individual, there was a forum poll to vote him off - he stays. And the forum has changed - much for the negative, I think.

Board 2 - maybe they're all so pilled up, but it's just a complete and total love fest and I've never been anywhere so friendly and welcoming. There are brief spats, but people really work to sort them out, there's no dogpiling on to egg on an argument, it's more like people actually try to actively get others to work through/forget their differences. Lovely.

Board 3 - 90% teenage girls and 90% lovely - except for the one teenage boy, who just happens to be moderator and behaves, well, like every teenage boy in the world and actively creates fights then bans anyone who disagrees with him.

So... not sure what those brief descriptions say.

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

Why is ILM almost exclusively male?

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

Board No.2 was the one where there was the long-running joke that there were no girls.

In fact, for the longest time, everyone though I was male - despite talking quite often about cock and boys I thought were hot, the usual Kate stuff - it was actually easier for them to believe that "wow, we thought you were just really REALLY camp!" than to accept that a girl had got into the inner sanctum.

But then, once I came out as being female, there turned out to be several other women on the board.

ILX does just have a particularly... masculine flavour all its own. I can't really put my finger on it. But it does just have a kind of... atmosphere at times that is really unpleasant. And I don't encounter on other forums.

"Talking about vagina at a dinner party." (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:30 (sixteen years ago)

ILX in general or ILM? As I've always thought of ILE as being 50/50.

Pfunkboy in blood drenched rabbit suit jamming in the woods (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:31 (sixteen years ago)

x-post to Kerr

The person having such a bad influence on Board 1 is male, but he's in his 30s so I don't know why he acts the way he does.

I suppose it really is down to individuals. It's not even that one individual can destroy a board, but more than one person can create a poisonous atmosphere by setting a standard that it's somehow OK to act in a certain way. And then more and more people act in a negative manner, and if that goes unchecked, and it drives off the more positive people, a board can tip.

double-x-post yeah, sorry - ILM.

"Talking about vagina at a dinner party." (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:33 (sixteen years ago)

okay speaking for myself here, i'm not particularly offended or revolted by ilm-ers making penis jokes or whatever. knock yourselves out. but somehow whenever a girl starts talking about the hotness of male musicians, immediately someone else and it's invariably a dude, goes "ugh stop, you're grossing me out" (cf the balearic dudes thread/the patrick wolf thread).

i'm not as overt about my googly-eyedness as kate is but i fucking hate that people pick on her when i personally don't find anything she says worse than what ilm dudes say about beyonce's ass. like grow up already. women have periods, get wet, have vaginas and orgasms, find certain male musicians really that fucking hott alright? get over it.

also it is lol that this thread that wondered why ilm was a boys club almost immediately devolved into dick jokes.

Reege & Leif (M@tt He1ges0n), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:48 (sixteen years ago)

Though I do think that that sentiment is specifically anti-Kate, rather than generally anti-women.

I mean, my general goggle-eyedness is something that's kind of... a reaction against lots of the music industry in general. Growing up as a female musician in an overwhelmingly male music world, you have to develop a certain level of toughness, and a kind of "having bigger balls than the men" attitude. Also, it's like... when I was younger and actually attractive, these were the kinds of things that were said about *ME* - as a woman before I was ever treated as an artist. So it was like, either, I had to get out, or just accept it and throw it back at people. If it's OK for fans, journos, critics, random strangers to talk about *me* onstage in that way, why shouldn't I be able to talk about *male* musicians (especially the supposedly "Serious" ones) IN THE SAME MANNER?

But, like I said, that's specifically anti-Kate because most women don't talk that way in public (they may FEEL it, but they've learned not to express it, because, in order to be taken seriously as a female music fan, you have to kind of... neuter yourself in order not to be cast into the groupie-stereotype.)

Why I think ILM is so overwhelmingly male? this is going to be a controversial answer, and I'm not going to qualify or debate it, but I do think that it's down to the poisonous attitude of a handful of posters who made it a pretty... icky place to be (let alone to be as a woman).

I've got a fairly thick hide most of the time, so I can shrug a great deal of it off (it's funny how people think I have such a hair trigger, considering the amount of stuff I do manage to just ignore - but hey, people never notice the times you *keep* your temper) - but a lot of women *are* put off by that kind of thing.

The ILM Double Standard (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

Well, I guess I've missed the worst of what Kate's talking about. Not saying it hasn't happened, either I didn't see it or it passed me by.

I think Geir's 'joke' was pretty revolting, but hey ho.

Mark G, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

what the fuck is anyone fucking talking about. specific examples or stfu

Mr. Que, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

but somehow whenever a girl starts talking about the hotness of male musicians, immediately someone else and it's invariably a dude, goes "ugh stop, you're grossing me out" (cf the balearic dudes thread/the patrick wolf thread).

Let's stop pretending this is a girl thing, rather than a Kate thing. Whenever this has come up in the past, it's not because the guys on the board are threatened by female sexuality, it's because Kate describes her desire in language that's frequently graphic/TMI. People are objecting for the same reasons they've objected to L0uis J@gger's odes to his own tumescence.

Though I do think that that sentiment is specifically anti-Kate, rather than generally anti-women.

Oh good, you agree.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:55 (sixteen years ago)

...and also... sorry, I am RANTING here, I know it, but I've got a lot of thoughts pent up at the moment, and if you want to suggest ban me for expressing them, well, perhaps I'll get more work done.

But... you get the ILX that you create with what you choose to give attention to. I said this the other day - you know, when I revive a thread with a perfectly straightforward request for information, no one even answers. When I get on a thread and start going "OMG OMG, EROL ALKAN - WET DREAM, WOULD TOTALLY HIT THAT - AW YEAH SPACE ELECTRO VAGINAS ROWR..." then suddenly I get dozens of replies. Sure, most of them will be negative, but at least it's some kind of reply.

(However, after I did point that out, I got a whole lot of really good, helpful replies - specifically on the James Holden/minimal techno thread. So I don't know if that works with all ILM GURLS or just Kates, but you know, more actual conversation and YouTube links means less provocative behaviour to try and get a reaction?)

The ILM Double Standard (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 20:57 (sixteen years ago)

Actually this board, of the five or so that I'm on that are relatively active, has the most visible and largest number of female contributors. The other four are dedicated to more "difficult" music.

Board 1: predominantly local/regional - 2nd most active female contributors, has the positive and negative aspects of a board where a lot of people know each other in real life and see each other at gigs: there are real life consequences to being an asshole or an idiot online, and there are the natural schisms and beefs of a local scene. Minimal trolling. Moderator is an employee of the entity that hosts the board.

Board 2: somewhat local - younger age demographic than Board 1. One moderator can be a serious bully, but has mellowed a bit as of late. Posts deemed offensive to moderator will get deleted, and several people have been banned for having beefs with moderator, including one ex-gf of moderator. Moderator has multiple sock puppet accounts. A significant number of women are members, but don't post nearly as much as dudes. Periodic dysfunctional butthurtedness. Minimal trolling due to active moderation.

Board 3: international - most posters are over 30 and male and seem like well-adjusted people that like to nerd out about weird music. Used to be set up to allow easy sockpuppetry, but registration measures have become stricter. Sockpuppets were even pretty well-mannered. Highly articulate flamewars and responses to the minimal trolling.

Board 4: international - almost entirely male, posts get regularly deleted and moved for being "off-topic." Lots of arguments where language barrier plays a significant role. Posts removed for criticism of a musician hero-worshipped by most of the board. Lacking in the sense of humor department.

2)
i would be curious to hear if other women outside of roz or kate have this problem? cuz i guess i could see the board being a little knuckleheaded but it doesn't strike me as like macho central exactly.

Anyone who gets even slightly weirded out by any woman talking about how hott this or that musician is is a pretty pitiful specimen IMO.

Most other fora & lists Im on (analog synthesisers & music studio shit mainly) are 100% boys clubs so even ILM seems more gender balanced to me. the only other forum that has a visible no of female posters is the classic movie forum i frequent and no-one bats an eyelid when someone rowrs at Richard Barthelmess or George O'Brien or who the fuck ever.

Pashmina, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

(I'm male BTW. I'm as manly as fuck, actually. Also a bit loaded right now)

Pashmina, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 21:07 (sixteen years ago)

yeah even if the ire is just directed at kate, it's just annoying as a woman who reads this board to see a whole bunch of guys pick on another woman for something as innocuous as ogling a dude, no matter how graphically detailed - especially when, as kate says, there are just loads and loads of threads with guys doing the exact same thing. and girls don't give you grief about it because quite honestly, we don't fucking care who gives you a boner.

there are other reasons why ilm is female-unfriendly aside from this i guess but it's the reason why it seems particularly unfriendly to me right now.

Roz, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

I'd just like to point out that no one is getting all "UGH GO AWAY" about the guys that Laurel or the schef or ENBB are posting on WS 09.

Also:
talking about Beyonce's ass or having a wank over the new Bat For Lashes album cover

I'd guess that most of this discourse is largely jokey, whereas most of your drooling posts seem quite earnest. I'm not going to claim that the jokiness makes it OK (i.e., I can see how a woman could find the language off-putting and even threatening), but I think it explains the difference in how people react to those posts vs. yours.

Bianca Jagger (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

Stop relegating Hull you miserable gits! (country matters), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 21:17 (sixteen years ago)

I'd guess that most of this discourse is largely jokey, whereas most of your drooling posts seem quite earnest.

1) are they really? Can a casual (female) reader tell that? and 2) are you sure? 99% of the time when I'm lusting after some boy, I'm usually laughing my head off, both at myself and the phenomenon of fandom. Why do read earnestness into one situation, and not the other? That says a lot more about you, and your prejudices that it does about me.

And now, in order to calm me down, and also to provide a lovely and female-welcoming environment, here, let's all enjoy the fabulous spectacle of the MOST BEAUTIFUL PAIR OF HANDS IN THE WORLD TODAY. And now I'm going to get offline and have a relaxing beverage.

p.p.s. please don't lock this thread before the results are in, no matter how much people hate me.

The ILM Double Standard (Masonic Boom), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 21:20 (sixteen years ago)

I think I manage to avoid the threads of potentially offensive sexual objectification of women on ILM. I run into it more on ILE on movie threads. It doesn't bother me when that's the subject of the thread. At most, it gets kinda annoying and boring, when not accompanied by LOLs. The thing that bugged me the most (in terms of things that tend to offend "feminine sensibilities") was the bullying and ridicule of other posters for what appeared to be no good reason, other than LOL. I didn't understand why so many people were picking on L0u1s. Now that I've been here a little while, I can understand a little better, but I think it's kinda mean. He seems like a good kid.

i don't think that's even remotely comparable given that the whole point of WS is to drool over beautiful people. this was about ILM specifically anyway. xxp

Roz, Tuesday, 24 March 2009 21:24 (sixteen years ago)

Kate, that was just conjecture. I don't really follow many of the threads you're on. (I just looked up the Patrick Wolf one to see what Roz was talking about.) In any case, you're probably right that it's not quite as simple as I'm making it sound.

I was just trying to combat the broad claim that the men of ILX are put off by expressions of female desire. If that were true, then surely WS would've turned into a clusterfuck long ago.

Anyway, I feel bad arguing with you about this, Roz, since I've recently been thinking about how much I like your presence on ILX.

eh no big deal jaymc.

fwiw i don't think kate's posts are earnest at all - she's not literally having an orgasm right there and then guys. in fact, they're pretty funny (to me anyway) until someone comes in and tells her she's gross.

honestly though if anyone thinks her style is TMI, hang out at a TV fan board sometime where the regulars are 80% young girls (especially if it's one dedicated to a CW TV show starring generically good-looking actors) - this is how fangirls usually behave and express appreciation for the opposite sex and there's nothing gross or creepy about it at all. it's just funny and somewhat endearing.

I was crushing on old-school Hillary Clinton (in her Twenties) -- probably because she resembles my supremely attractive friend Erin (who, despite liking me, is with someone else right now and so she's horribly unattainable). Goodness gracious, I'm an absolute sucker for blondes these days. But after dropping by a bookstore yesterday where my long-time friend Molly (who is not a blonde, mind you) works -- oh goodness, she's always stunning but yesterday I really wanted to pounce on her because she looked so exceptionally scrumptious (without even trying!) and was just so bubbly and charming. I wanted to playfully tackle her behind the counter and from there on it would've been wonderfully inappropriate! Anyhow, she's invited me along to dinner and some other event with a group of her friends on Friday -- it's not a date essentially, but at heart I wouldn't mind if it twisted into one. Ooh, I just remembered that she complimented my appearance! No-one ever does that! Squee! Cuddlestein Mountain! Nuvvieworld! Okay, I'm just getting ridiculous -- I'm just excited because it's a prospect to escape social poverty with a possible hint of romance. I'm probably being too optimistic; I can't help it! I've wanted something to look forward to!

I will say is that it's not even the graphic/TMIness so much as the frequency. Anyone doing the same OTT self-indulgent/attention-seeking schtick over and over for years will annoy people (not all people obv, just a certain number - and not all men i know this for fact), regardless of the subject.

Also Natasha Khan is cute or whatever but taking your top off for your album cover just seems so cliched and pandering to certain expectations you shouldn't be surprised if it increases sexual objectification of her instead of more discussion of the music.

Yet again, ILM utterly and totally misses the point re: gender.

Someone asks the question "why are there so few females on ILM?"

Woman 1 pipes up to say "well, actually I feel, as a woman, quite put off by the way that this forum has dogpiled on hating Woman 2" and then ILM goes on to have a 163 post thread - dogpiling on the hate of Woman 2.

Anyway, whatever. This is so tedious and nothing ever gets learned, just the same old tired feuds get rehashed out yet again. At least I managed to finish my Finding Ada Lovelace post in time.

I am female but my own general avoidance of posting on ILM is usually because I either feel I don't have anything to contribute to a thread, or that when I do, someone else has already said it more eloquently... or, just that my knowledge of something isn't very good compared to other people's. I definitely lurk on some of the more thought-provoking ILM threads, though. A more accurate/revealing poll may have put an option for people of each gender who lurk but don't often post.

Also, that Julia Roberts gif had me giggling for way too long.

Well, the results of the poll are going to be useless now that a lot of fucking dicks have said that they are planning on lying.

It is impossible to have a constructive debate about gender on ILX.

I'm beginning (what do you mean beginning?) to realise that it's impossible to have a constructive debate about *anything* on ILX. It's impossible to talk about any kind of actual real issues when people just use anything as an excuse to vent on personal feuds, vendettas, etc. But I've known this for a long time. (And I'm certainly not innocent.)

So there's the impasse. You either deal with ILM the way that it is, or you move on and go somewhere less... hostile. So you can't be surprised if women choose to do the latter.

I don't think that a disproportionate number of women have left ilx (or indeed ilm)? it's never exactly felt as if there was a great oestrogen exodus. ILM's always skewed male; it doesn't feel any more male than it did four, five years ago.

fwiw I have never really had a problem being female on ilm! I like ilm more than ile! But then I'm fairly thick-skinned (...fairly), have little time to post, and basically just want to find out things about records.

TBH Kate this debate would have been a lot more constructive had you not almost immediately come in and made it a thread about you. I look around ILX and see constructive debates happening all the time, some of them even involving you!

And yes the people who immediately jumped on you take a big chunk of the blame as well. And this is someone who AGREES with the basic point you and Roz are making, but you in particular expressed yourself in such an instantly hyper-defensive and accusatory way that it's hardly surprising the whole thing veered into this.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 10:18 (sixteen years ago)

ie it's exactly the same method of arguing that causes people to jump on Marcello when he makes one of his grand pronouncements, even when he is essentially right.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 10:20 (sixteen years ago)

I can understand if you read it that way, because, obviously, if you have a negative opinion of someone, you are going to read negativity into everything they say or do - but I did not make this thread about me.

But that's ILX, you try to discuss your own personal experiences in an attempt to extrapolate, of course you're going to open yourself up to overtly personal nastiness. (It's really not very nice, and actually, quite upsetting on a very personal level to have your entire personality dismissed as "schtick" by someone with a long term dislike of you, but hey, I don't think it's appropriate to air that here so I just won't.)

No, you're right, it's not like there's been a "massive female exodus" (though I do recall it being a bit more gender balanced in the very early days) - but it's more like... I have tried to turn so many of my girlfriends onto ILM. Women who love music and have a lot to say. It's more like they stick their heads in the door, and just kind of turn off and walk away without posting, or lurking at best. And they do say (about 4 or 5 different women have said this to me at different time) that the atmosphere of nastiness is one of the biggest reasons.

But I am so tired of this whole subject, and though, hey, it's "just ILX" I have genuinely been hurt and upset by some of the things that people have said about me on this thread, so enough.

i mean maybe we should do a poll on 'It is impossible to have a constructive debate about gender anything on ILX' and see how many people vote yes. i just think comments like that are absurd and nothing to do with "long-term dislike" or whatever excuse has been cooked up to explain why two people might strongly disagree about something.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

It depends on what you consider 'constructive'.

Few debates end up changing anyone's mind about anything, the best they can achieve is to highlight something missed and/or unnoticed.

If the place is a bear pit, the bears aren't going to notice.

Mark G, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 11:32 (sixteen years ago)

fwiw i did say that there are prob other reasons why ilm skews highly male, despite its openness and the breadth of knowledge available here. i hate to generalize about this, but it seems that girls are mostly just less aggressive about music they like/dislike, less prone to completist tendencies, less inclined to get involved in musical one-upmanship and so on. and you have to admit that ilm snark veers close to outright meanness and bullying at times - all of this would be intimidating to most people, but i'm guessing to women especially considering that there isn't that many of us here in the first place.

i just picked on the one reason that really bugged me - which is that the last few times that me and Kate started a mostly innocent and fun conversation about hot male musicians, someone came in and accused her of being gross and creepy, when nothing she had said had struck me as being particularly offensive, especially when compared to similar things said by other ilm-ers about female artists. it might just be directed at her or her personal posting style, but the way it happened and what was said was hugely annoying and made me feel like in order to be here we need to keep our female libidos in check all the time. which again, isn't fair.

and one more time, lol @ this thread devolving immediately into dick jokes (started by Geir, of all people) - i guess that prob made the entire discussion that followed a moot point.

Roz, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 11:34 (sixteen years ago)

again Roz, just look at the old to semi-old celebrities you would travel back in time to have lots of sex with. thread for evidence that there is no real policing against female libidos or whatever. it is just down to the difference between saying it and shouting it repeatedly.

sexual objectification or romanticising of female artists on ILM tends to be blunt but thankfully brief, even reduced to "ws" perhaps because most guys know people don't actually want to read them going into detail about it or be encouraged to picture them in the act. some examples might be useful in the argument tho.

i'm just trying to explain why this perceived unjust imbalance may be felt.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 11:43 (sixteen years ago)

but that's my point. i'm not sure she was shouting it repeatedly at all. and yes i know there's threads like that one and WS08/09 where it's free ogling for all - ergo, there's also no reason for people to pick on her (or any girl at all) for getting extra fangirly when patrick wolf shows up in his new video half-naked in bondage gear.

Roz, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 11:55 (sixteen years ago)

it's just like saying there's no reason to pick on Bimble, or Geir, or whoever really. People have very different ideas and expectations of what is reasonable to object to or behaviour-wise - can't say one is more right than another most of the time ergo there will be fites.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:09 (sixteen years ago)

some people are more prone to repeatedly object to others' peccadilloes in a dickish, bullying, potentially hurtful manner though - and that is far worse than being overly enthusiastic à la bimble, or whatever it is about kate that people object to - and that is the point here

roz again otm

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:24 (sixteen years ago)

i mean, what is worse, kate lusting after boys in that balearic thread, or the bullying pile-on which resulted in one perfectly fine poster leaving and the ensuing clusterfuck? who are you really defending her?

*here

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:25 (sixteen years ago)

exactly. and btw i'm generally opposed to picking on bimble and geir too cause both of them are pretty harmless to me. i'm just trying to explain why picking on kate in particular for being enthusiastic about dudes might be annoying or off-putting for other female ILM-ers.

Roz, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:26 (sixteen years ago)

I think Geir seems to enjoy the banter though - and there's never any malice involved.
Whereas the responses to Kate's enthusiasm are often quite nasty.

Still not sure what Kate is supposed to have done wrong though, I've never seen any post from her which I'd object to.

*Haha that was only last week but still, we are trying.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:33 (sixteen years ago)

i don't think anyone's denying that kate's a marmite poster and that this isn't partly a kate thing (but also partly a general female thing - or at least an anti-fangirl rhetoric thing, which isn't limited to females and which not all females do - people who object to fangirlism can suck a dick and grow up though). it's that they don't seem to be able to move along and skip over her posts, but instead gang up on her in a particularly nasty way wherever possible and whatever she posts. that is really cuntish, immature behaviour.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:34 (sixteen years ago)

I agree but it isn't really hugely different to what people do to, say, LJ or Tuomas, one of whom seems to provoke a similar, ahem, visceral reaction in certain posters not a million miles away from here.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:36 (sixteen years ago)

Louis is similar to Geir - he's actually well liked and enjoys the banter as far as I can tell

Thought people were cruel to Tuomas & never understood why. (seems we don't like people who wear their hearts on their sleeves?)

tomofthenest, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:41 (sixteen years ago)

Basically I wish this board was always 50% female and they posted however they wanted, so we wouldn't have to go thru this shit every time.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)

think both comparison are unfair to tuomas, tbh, without prejudice to either of the other posters.

tuomas never had the habit of turning every thread he posted on into a thread about him, although his ... persistence obviously grated on enough people in the end.

Anthony, I am not an Alcoholic & Drunk (darraghmac), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:45 (sixteen years ago)

I don't know who you mean by this "we". It is entirely down to individuals as mentioned upthread. I think it's pretty difficult to deny there are certain posters who regularly throw around misogynistic comments, some of whom have been banned recently.

But at the same time ILX as a whole has a higher proportion of prominent female posters than most other web communities I've been a part of. And one of the quickest ways to alienate people here is to perv or creep over female posters as we've seen time and time again. There's a problem but it's a lot more nuanced than this thread seems to suggest.

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:47 (sixteen years ago)

yeah i don't deny that it's partly a kate thing (as it might be partly a tuomas thing or a geir thing) but again, it was more about why picking on her the way some guys do would be offputting to girls on ilm in general.

Roz, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:48 (sixteen years ago)

some people did a similar thing re tuomas ie missing the point behind why people had a problem with it. even he himself re suggest bans didn't seem to get that it wasn't what he was saying that people objected to generally, but the way he went about it (pedantic, needling, that lack of self-awareness thing). that's how i saw it anyway.

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

It's not just offputting to girls though - I know as many male as well as female posters who have been put off by a poisonous atmosphere here at times. But yes I totally see your point.

I guess what I'm saying is, are there misogynists here - yes almost certainly. Is misogyny a problem across the community as a whole? Probably not. (xpost)

Matt DC, Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:51 (sixteen years ago)

speaking of tuomas, can he be unbanned now pls? i imagine he would have had some worthwhile contributions to make on this scintillating thread.

although they probably would have led to him being sugbanned again. :-/

N1ck (Upt0eleven), Wednesday, 25 March 2009 12:53 (sixteen years ago)

i think the thing about Tuomas is that sometimes other people would turn the thread into a thread about him, at least for a while? and if you're just skimming it's hard to tell who's doing it, you just notice that the thread's become about Tuomas, again. And the same with Kate, often - it isn't just Kate's original posts that make the thread "about her", it's the kneejerk reactions and the way she responds to those reactions. but then sometimes it doesn't happen - as with eg the border community thread revive, which was totally civil and fun.

The thing is, though, as a new person or potential ilx-or, while the target of some of the bullying and nastiness might be okay with it or enjoy it as banter, without that context, it could be perceived as pretty cruel. One of the things mentioned by women in the older gender-representation thread, that both Kate and Roz bring up is feeling like you have to be really careful how you present yourself and what you say for fear of being an object of ridicule - either the subject of an argument or opinion about music or details of your personal life. This isn't to say that the women are more sensitive about this than the men, the common sentiment was that it wasn't really worth the grief, in the "I have better things to do" sense.

That said, this thread doesn't really read like a pile-on Kate. Besides making fun of or being grossed out by oversharing of other posters that aren't Kate, most of the people responding hadn't read the threads Kate was upset by, me included.

Back in 2001, as the internet boom turned into a bust, M.I.T.’s Quarterly Journal of Economics published an intriguing paper called “Boys Will Be Boys: Gender, Overconfidence, and Common Stock Investment.” The authors, Brad Barber and Terrance Odean, gained access to the trading activity in over 35,000 households, and used it to compare the habits of men and women. What they found, in a nutshell, is that men not only trade [post?] more often than women but do so from a false faith in their own financial [musical?] judgment. Single men traded less sensibly than married men, and married men traded less sensibly than single women: the less the female presence, the less rational the approach to trading in the markets.

If ILM's too aggressive for women is that definitively a bad thing? While I don't really condone any Freudian fears of female urges wrt Scandinavian house-music, I think that the heated atmosphere of ILM is kinda why most of us are here in the first place.

I dont usually read/post to ILM cause frankly, I find it really boring much of the time, and I love my music.

Also, I find these kind of hangwringing gender threads pointless, really. Who cares if theres 3 or 300 women on here. Why does it matter? You almost never hear the guys asking why theres too many guys here (OK I know Kerr started this thread but... you know).

Dude, it was a prostitution thread, the question of the thread was if you had ever been, or been with a prostitute. I answered it very simply and succintly, not even more than a sentence. What about that offended you so much? I'm just curious, cause I think it's weird that someone would be that offended by what I wrote:
Thread is here.

And all I said was this:

I was with a gorgeous black woman prostitute in D.C. once, yes. Big knockers as I recall.
