Please Choose Your Favorite 4AD Female Vocalist (Whose Name Does Not Start w/ Elizabeth Fraser)

For reasons of fairness and balance, the elephant in the room has been excluded. Please select based on 4AD work only: For example, you'd have to think that her work on Chemical Chords trumps everything else on the list if you plan to vote for Laetitia Sadier. Rachel Goswell doesn't count for Slowdive, but does for Mojave 3, etc.

Laetitia Sadier (Stereolab)

laying | (goole), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:20 (sixteen years ago)

Kim Deal. Without doubt.

jagged-electronically mäandernden underbody (Drugs A. Money), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:23 (sixteen years ago)

really? even considering everything else stereolab has done, i'd still put her behind lisa gerrard, kim deal, maybe kristin hersh.

x-post

I think no pants is sexy. (Matt P), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

my faves are easy: heidi berry, kim deal (don't forget her awesome ultra vivid scene cameo!), lisa germano, kristin hersh, lorita grahame, and anja huwe. i would have to choose between either lisa or kristin for number one and i refuse to do that because that would just be mean. am i the only person who still listens to heidi berry records? 4AD was so ahead of its time as far as the whole freak folk thing goes. i should wiki heidi and see what she's been up to. i should actually just pick lorita for baby i love you so alone. (who sung the original version of breakdown by colourbox? and tarantula? maybe i should vote for them...)

scott seward, Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:24 (sixteen years ago)

i liked mary hansen better anyway, r.i.p.

I think no pants is sexy. (Matt P), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:25 (sixteen years ago)

oh i guess i love lisa gerrard too. i mean i love dead can dance.

i'm so straight for kim deal's lisp.

I think no pants is sexy. (Matt P), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

I voted Miki because I love her hair so much.

(The) (Fabulous) (Stevie D), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:27 (sixteen years ago)

The reason I started this poll is, having been on a Throwing Muses kick lately, I realized how many of my all-time favorite female vocalists were on 4AD at some point. This would include: Liz F (obv), Kristin Hersh, Kim Deal, Laetitia Sadier, Paula Frazer, Kendra Smith, Meriel Barham, Lisa Gerrard & Rachel Goswell (with several other honorable mentions). So I'm going to take some time to roll this one around before committing.

am i the only person who still listens to heidi berry records? - nope

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

how long was stereolab on 4AD, i don't associate them with this label at all.

velko, Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:32 (sixteen years ago)

i always forget about the unrest/4AD thing cuz their records are all on teenbeat in the states.

scott seward, Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

that dude from cindytalk should get an honorary vote in this poll.

scott seward, Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

xpost: Unrest only put out a bit of material on 4AD, but it was some of their best work IMO: Perfect Teeth, Isobel Bishop EP, Cath Carroll EP

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:41 (sixteen years ago)

Jeez, one could make a convincing argument for B.Cross based on "Angel, I Will Walk You Home" alone.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

ah right perfect teeth and that stuff WAS on 4AD. i'd forgotten. and, yeah, that's all some of my fave stuff by them.

scott seward, Sunday, 5 April 2009 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

No Caroline Crawley, no credibility.

Stevie T, Sunday, 5 April 2009 20:26 (sixteen years ago)

Of Shellyan Orphan? I do like some SO (still bump "Burst" from time to time), but I'm pretty sure they were exclusively on Rough Trade. If CC did some solo work on 4AD, I am unaware of it & duly apologize, sir.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 5 April 2009 20:36 (sixteen years ago)

She sang on at least four This Mortal Coil tracks, I think.

Stevie T, Sunday, 5 April 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

Huh, yeah ur right: She was on several tracks on Blood. I never made the connection. I didn't go to the trouble to track down all the individual guest collaborators on the TMC albums. My bad, b/c yeah, she is a fantastic vocalist.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 5 April 2009 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

There's also Anke Wolbert from Clan of Xymox.

f. hazel, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:14 (sixteen years ago)

Kristin Hersh, Lisa Gerrard and Kendra Smith get enough love, so I'm going with Heidi Berry.

f. hazel, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:16 (sixteen years ago)

As much as I love Kristin and TM, Heidi Berry is easily the best vocalist from the list..

I just wish she would make another record... another Below The Waves plz k thx.

Jack Battery-Pack, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:19 (sixteen years ago)

There's also Anke Wolbert from Clan of Xymox. - doh!

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:22 (sixteen years ago)

And Judith Boyle from Spirea X! hahahaha

f. hazel, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:26 (sixteen years ago)

OK, well, at least no one in their right mind would choose Spirea X as their favorite 4AD groop, vox or no.

2 ears + 1 ❤ (Pillbox), Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:28 (sixteen years ago)

okay, i'm being picky again but the other rutkowski, deirdre, should be up there with louise. cuz the vocals they did on filligree and shadow and blood are some of my favorite vocals ever. and they were kind of a team harmony-wise. their versions of tarantula and morning glory are so great. (and all the back-up harmonies and singing they did. like on the god-like strength of strings.)

also a shout-out to alison limerick on the this mortal coil records. her "my father" and "drugs" are awesome.

scott seward, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:46 (sixteen years ago)

Clearly This Mortal Coil need their own poll.

f. hazel, Sunday, 5 April 2009 21:47 (sixteen years ago)

^^ I could get behind that.

As much as I love Lush, it's not like Miki B could ever be considered the finest vocalist (tho' arguably the coolest name on this list). I'll go with Tanya D.

yeah, that might be what I'm thinking of, actually.. I recall having a cassette of that I picked up in the late-90s as record store promo-junk. Why on earth she would dump a great tune like that exclusively on to a promo sampler is beyond me. Thanks for the effort, anyway.

That's like the best Heidi Berry song ever, too. Produced by Brendan Perry.

f. hazel, Monday, 6 April 2009 01:38 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, you non-Lisa Gerrard voting people, we need to sit down and have a talk. Really. Step in my office.

I'm ashamed to say I haven't heard much Heidi Berry at all. Agree that TMC probably needs its own similar poll aside from this.

I'm delighted that a few folks thought of Anke from Xymox! :) :) :) You know I haven't heard the entirety of Twist of Shadows since it came out but I think I might like to.

Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Monday, 6 April 2009 01:39 (sixteen years ago)

Another vote for Heidi Berry -- ironically, her pre-4AD records were much more 4AD-esque than what came out on 4AD -- by the time Ivo signed her up, she was more Sandy Denny/Linda Thompson than anything else. The Kendra Smith record is good but it now unfortunately seems like a one-off.

Jeff Wright, Monday, 6 April 2009 03:00 (sixteen years ago)

Jeff Wright! You're still alive! So happy to hear from you here, man! I know every time you show up here I get sorta teary eyed about when you and I used to be such good penpals, but even so, it's been quite awhile since I've seen you here. I hope all is well with you. Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Monday, 6 April 2009 03:29 (sixteen years ago)

"Love" is better than "Below the Waves" although I love 'em both. Also search the demo version of "The Mountain" which outshines the album version.

f. hazel, Monday, 6 April 2009 03:51 (sixteen years ago)

Yep, noted. Thanks.

Still, people who don't vote Lisa Gerrard in this poll need to step into my office.

Earl of Gothington Manor (Bimble), Monday, 6 April 2009 03:56 (sixteen years ago)

Please select based on 4AD work only: For example, you'd have to think that her work on Chemical Chords trumps everything else on the list if you plan to vote for Laetitia Sadier.

Fuck you, I won't play by your rules and I voted for Laetitia anyway.

Honorable mention to Kazu Makino, poor girl isn't gonna get more than a vote or two and she's fucking classic.

Paula Frazier, Laetitia Sadier, Lisa Gerrard in that order.

Another vote for Miki!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Tuesday, 7 April 2009 13:48 (sixteen years ago)

This dude's a dude. (He's the drummer.) - lol, oops. For some reason I thought Stereolab had always had more than one vocalist, post-Mary Hansen (RIP) or no. I'll bet he gets at least one or two votes.

I feel like I ought to vote for one of those His Name Is Alive ladies if I knew who sang what. - Karin Oliver was their primary vocalist up through the Nice Day ep. Ft. Lake featured both her and Pippen, and then Pippen sang exclusively on the next two albums (by which point HNIA had completely abandoned their more 4AD-appropriate leanings in favor of trad gospel-blues). I actually fucked up (yet again :/ ) by including Andy FM (who is actually Oliver's cousin or something), b/c she doesn't figure into the equation until Detrola in 2005, by which point they had left 4AD.

It's funny that, despite their deliberate weirdness early on, HNIA sounded even more bizarre and haunting as they became more trad, and I think the entire catalog shows one of the most interesting stylistic evolutions one could hope to find. Still, my money would be on Oliver, particularly for The Dirt Eaters EP & Mouth by Mouth - stunning vox in both cases.

OK, so I've reoriented myself with "The Devil" (thanks again FH - I can't believe the quality you got from a cassette-rip. It sounds fantastic! No audible tape hiss at all.) & yeah, it is as great as I remember - not to mention that this is the first time I've actually "heard" it, being that previous listening experiences transpired exclusively on a shitty cassette player in my old car.

Anyway, yeah, the Brendan Perry production totally makes sense: It has that same quasi-Irish/quasi-Americana acousti-goth sound (which I luuurve) as mid-90s era DCD. It certainly makes a qualified argument for the full-scale DCD/Heidi Berry collab (as I geekishly dream..) that will never happen.

I'm seriously second-guessing my vote for Kristin Hersh here.

Her and Brendan Perry doing an album together would have been pretty great, I think. Some well-chosen covers and a handful of new material... I'm imagining something along the lines of Fotheringay given the This Mortal Coil treatment. She was supposed to have another album out back in 2006 (not on 4AD) but it never happened. I wonder if she's reachable via her website for news?

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 11 April 2009 04:22 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe she and Kendra Smith are secretly collaborating with Richey Manic & Tupac.

srsly tho, b/w her and Kendra, it would be nice to get some info on these ambiguous non-retirements. Heidi's last album was her best IMO (still have not heard her debut, to be fair). She must be doing... something?

Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Saturday, 11 April 2009 04:37 (sixteen years ago)

Heidi Berry teaches and does songwriting workshops somewhere in England. Kendra Smith... does not use Facebook. Or computers. Or electricity.

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 11 April 2009 04:47 (sixteen years ago)

everyone knows judith from spirea x is judith from adventures in stereo yes?

lorax enforcement officer (electricsound), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:06 (sixteen years ago)

I did not know that. FWIW, my dismissal of Spirea X was not intentional (when I started the poll), but, for the record, that record is so boring and generic as to be overlooked by even the most exacting of shoegaze completists. This is not Judith's fault, so much as it is that of Jim Beattie.

Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:18 (sixteen years ago)

Oh yeah that Spirea X CD single I bought years ago was a snoozefest.

Lucking Faptop (Bimble), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:23 (sixteen years ago)

i think the album is fairly middling. their best tracks are on the two singles - 'jet pilot' being their best moment for me

lorax enforcement officer (electricsound), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:26 (sixteen years ago)

I didn't know Kendra Smith had anything out on 4AD at all. I remember the Opal record which was pretty good, but I guess I never cared enough to follow. Hell I didn't know she was in Dream Syndicate, either! Amazing facts!

Lucking Faptop (Bimble), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:27 (sixteen years ago)

I'm starting to feel bad no one's repped for the Xmal Deutschland chick, though. Or even Kirsty Yates from Insides...damnit what was that band she was in before them? ARRGH, don't tell me...it's on the tip of my tongue...

Yeah can we have a 4AD boyz vocalist poll though? (in which I will tear my hair out trying to decide between Brendan Perry & Ian Masters?)

Lucking Faptop (Bimble), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:31 (sixteen years ago)

Don't forget the guy from Spirea X!

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:33 (sixteen years ago)

Earwig! That's the name of that band she was in before Insides...I still remember Peel playing them. I saw their CD in LA once and almost bought it, but didn't. Alright I know I'm getting too talkative now. I'll be quiet for a bit.

Lucking Faptop (Bimble), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:34 (sixteen years ago)

way xpost to Bimble Re: K. Smith: Her 4AD LP is good & def worth seeking out, but you should try to get your hands on Opal's Early Recordings or Kendra's The Guild of Temporal Adventurers, both of which are practically impossible to find, natch. *email me if want mp3s, cause I've got 'em.

Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:34 (sixteen years ago)

What world is this where Bimble hasn't heard the Guild of Temporal Adventurers?

the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:36 (sixteen years ago)

Don't forget the guy from Spirea X! - yeah, Jim Beattie. The dude from the most boringest LP on 4AD and Primal Scream's worst album (which is REALLY saying something).

Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:37 (sixteen years ago)

yeah can we have a 4AD boyz vocalist poll though? (in which I will tear my hair out trying to decide between Brendan Perry & Ian Masters?) - We'll do this next, & then have a grudge match b/w the winner of each poll. And then the winner of that poll can go up against Liz.

Ian Masters, btw. Dude has the voice of an angel. Have you heard the ESP Summer album, Bimble?

Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:39 (sixteen years ago)

Ian Masters, btw. Dude has the voice of an angel. Have you heard the ESP Summer album, Bimble?

Yeah I have, and see I actually lied. BECAUSE I WOULD VOTE FOR IAN MASTERS EVEN OVER BRENDAN PERRY, BITCHEZ. LOL "voice of an angel" only scratches the surface with that dude!

Anyway I don't know about the Kendra thing...see, the college radio station was fucking INSANE over that Happy Nightmare Baby record and it was nice but I never got all excited about it. What kind of music/instrumentation do these Kendra records have?

Lucking Faptop (Bimble), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:51 (sixteen years ago)

xpost: Spirea X never struck me as bad, per se, just dull as dishwater. And this is coming from someone with a MAJOR soft spot for shoegaze also-rans: Bleach, Blind Mr. Jones, you name it. But all I ever keep on hand from Spirea X is "Chlorine Dream," and that is basically only for the purpose of genre completion.

xpost: "Early Recordings" is paisley underground at its very finest, but a lot folkier and less Doors-obsessed than HNB. GOTA is the genesis of Kendra's love affair with the hand-pump organ & it alternates between rainy-day droney tracks and bizarro pop songs. You'd have to hear that one, really.

Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Saturday, 11 April 2009 05:58 (sixteen years ago)

Alright downloading Guild now...but after this you guys gotta give me a rest. Listening to the Devil by Heidi Berry now. Reminds me of Clannad for some reason. I downloaded Below The Waves, too, gonna listen to that next. I can see why people would reference Sandy Denny about her from this Devil track, though.

yeah, I had a soft spot for shoegazing also-rans too - anyone remember some Australian band called Jupiter or some such? Holy shit, I think I've still got that record. I also like Revolver and Drop Nineteens...um...AT THE TIME.

Lucking Faptop (Bimble), Saturday, 11 April 2009 06:00 (sixteen years ago)

Jim, please tell me you remember this band called Jupiter. I still have the record. It was on Summershine records.

Lucking Faptop (Bimble), Saturday, 11 April 2009 06:01 (sixteen years ago)

i've never forgotten jupiter, listen to them quite regularly... at the time that record was a revelation in australian music. still sounds great today.

main dude went on to be in january, who had a couple of albums.. one on poptones (a great album) and one on must destroy (not such a great album)

lorax enforcement officer (electricsound), Saturday, 11 April 2009 06:05 (sixteen years ago)

January played in my college cafeteria when I was studying in Ireland! I totally didn't know that that dude was in Jupiter. And I haven't thought about Summershine records in a VERY long time.

Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Saturday, 11 April 2009 06:07 (sixteen years ago)

heh they're a MASSIVE part of my musical history so they're never very far from my mind..

lorax enforcement officer (electricsound), Saturday, 11 April 2009 06:11 (sixteen years ago)

btw, while we're on the subject, if anyone has an mp3 of Whipping Boy's "Sugar I Swear," I've been looking for one for a long time (even the band themselves couldn't help me with that one).

Imaginary Dead Baseball Players Live in My Cornfield (Pillbox), Saturday, 11 April 2009 06:11 (sixteen years ago)

ES, you know Lauren A. right? I know Jupiter from a mix tape she sent me in 1993! It is a small world for us 'gaze freaks.

Yeah, they were called Jupiter. Don't have the album handy here, but I recall them having one of the most 4AD-wannabe album covers ever.

Here we go...

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_y35XeAsqK6c/RxFqx_7M_DI/AAAAAAAAAJU/zg-nBAKjUZ8/s200/cover.jpg

Think Summershine released this. Went through a stretch when I picked up a lot of what they were releasing - Autohaze (underrated) and Drop City/Colorsound (which I think are brilliant)

lots of xxx-posts

Autohaze (underrated)

hmm, i'm in two minds about this. i think their first handful of releases are great, but once they ditched the galaxie influence for a more byrds/neil young thing they totally lost me

drop city's first album and the chiaroscuro are effectively aussie noise pop canon

lorax enforcement officer (electricsound), Saturday, 11 April 2009 06:37 (sixteen years ago)

My favorite 4AD shoegaze also-ran was Orange (the 1992 New Zealand-by-way-of-San Francisco one). Release a 7" on BJM's Tangible label and a full album a couple years later. Pretty sure vocalist Sonya Waters is still working, but back in NZ now.

Carroll Shelby Downard (Elvis Telecom), Saturday, 11 April 2009 06:40 (sixteen years ago)

Oh fuck I love you guys with this Jupiter stuff! To me it's a forgotten record, a nothing record no one should know about, which I just happened to have asked my mother to send me in the mail some years ago amongst other shoegazing records. (It's an EP that starts with a song called "Sense") I'm gonna put it on the turntable in just a minute here just for you. I can't remember what even made me buy it, I'm afraid. I was England at the time. I really don't remember. But I was passionate enough about it to write a letter to Jupiter about it back then, and one of the band responded! Can't remember the details, sorry.

Sigh...yeah I remember Whipping Boy, too. Had some 12". Didn't make much of an impression.

Will check my email, Pillbox. I am slightly drunk myself. I know I get out of hand on this board sometimes and offend some people, but really that's all I want out of life is to discuss music with folks. Even if I go totally sober tomorrow and never drink or smoke again, I will still need that or life isn't worth living.

Don't know anything about January, but I'm amused to hear they were on Poptones.

Lucking Faptop (Bimble), Saturday, 11 April 2009 06:41 (sixteen years ago)

Also, sorry I don't remember these other Jupiter releases that Chris mentions...although the sleeve he posted is familiar. Maybe I didn't like them after that EP, I don't know...

Agreed. But those first singles and Mild Steel Flat are tremendous.

I would vote for Magic Transistor Radio myself.

That Orange album on Dewdrops? It's great! Their track on the Splashed with Many a Speck comp is also amazing, sounds plucked from some early 4AD comp.

Pillbox...I got your email, but you know how the ILX email system works...you have to literally type out your email for the person you're writing to, because it won't let you have a return address, hence me having to interrupt this thread to post this. If you want to correspond with me on email, mine is new_dawn_fades_6_1_@yahoo_.com without the underlines. ILX gods, will you please fix this about the ILX email system someday so I don't have to keep interrupting threads with this shit? Thanks.

Lorita Grahame (Colourbox) 2

Ouch, ilxors need their ears syringed if they think Miki Berenyi or Laetitia Sadler are better vocalists than her. Her vocals on 'Moon is Blue'or 'Baby I Love You So' alone pwn most other singers on 4AD's roster.

featuring Strawberry and the Shortcakes (Billy Dods), Thursday, 23 April 2009 08:44 (sixteen years ago)

I dont think Miki is a good singer full stop, but hey I didnt vote for her.

Paula Frazer, underappreciated now and forever.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 23 April 2009 10:40 (sixteen years ago)

Holy shit, I just realized that Heidi B only got one vote! That is one less than Andy Ramsay, who is a dude (thanks jaymc). That just ain't cool.

SORCEROUSES..roll on stage! (Pillbox), Thursday, 23 April 2009 12:24 (sixteen years ago)

Ouch, ilxors need their ears syringed if they think Miki Berenyi or Laetitia Sadler are better vocalists than her. - well, aside from the fact that a lot of people haven't heard Colourbox (which is, itself, unfortunate), I was careful to phrase the poll heading with "favorite," rather than "best," so that people didn't feel compelled to vote for who they "should" vote for. I mean, by any standard, Lorita is a more dynamic vocalist than Miki or Laetitia, but both of the latter have great tone and timbre which perfectly complements the music of their respective bands.

SORCEROUSES..roll on stage! (Pillbox), Thursday, 23 April 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)

I am in the process of assembling the 4AD Guys Poll & it is proving to be quite an undertaking, but it will be posted tonight. Meanwhile, if any of you could help me out by letting me know who the male vocalists were on the This Mortal Coil albums, I would appreciate it. I don't have physical copies of them at present & am having trouble tracking down song-for-song personnel info.

SORCEROUSES..roll on stage! (Pillbox), Saturday, 25 April 2009 23:32 (sixteen years ago)

Never mind - I found the info at Discogs.

checking out some Breeders youtubes from Coachella 2008 makes me wish that Kelley Deal had been an option here, since I think she has an even better voice than Kim's...

aw, I would have voted for Paula if I'd seen this poll

akm, Sunday, 26 April 2009 04:30 (sixteen years ago)

I too wish Lorita had got more votes. I think she should get some of Miki's, who often gets bonus points just for her looks.

See, more people know Stereolab, which is why Laetitia got all those votes, see. Cause people don't know about other stuff. They need to be made aware. Laetitia is a mighty fine vocalist, don't get me wrong, but people need to be educated.

bloomps! (there it is) (Pillbox), Sunday, 29 May 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)

my two favorite karin oliver songs:) the other's pretty great too. could have included the other hnia singers on the poll, karen neal, denise james, chelle marie, erika hoffman, melissa elliott, etc... melissa elliott with a guitar, heck melissa elliott at car city records, sigh! dirt eaters, what could have been.

keythhtyek, Monday, 30 May 2011 05:02 (fourteen years ago)

in the case of HNIA, there is this whole vast sub-tier of rotating vocalists and players.. I mean, you just rattled of six or seven off the cuff! So I thought it would be reasonable to zero in on the lead vocalists who have defined various incarnations of their sound: Karin for the dreamier early stuff, Lovetta Pippin for the trad blues etc. albums, & Andy FM for Detrola & surrounding collaborations.

Were any of the women you mentioned in his 90s band The Dirt Eaters?

Erika Hoffman sounds familiar. I think I might actually kinda *know* her - tho I didn't know she played w/ Warn. It doesn't surprise me, tho. There was a time, a few years ago, when there was this rotating circle of indie kids & UM music school ppl who, at any given time, comprised the lineups of Saturday Looks Good to Me, Nomo & HNIA + all associated offshoots etc.

bloomps! (there it is) (Pillbox), Monday, 30 May 2011 05:17 (fourteen years ago)

erika hoffman was also the singer in godzuki and she appeared on a lot of saturday looks good to me songs. she was on 'stars on esp'. melissa elliott was in the dirt eaters. there are other things that never were released like his name is arrive, i don't know if they ever recorded anything actually, the japanoise version of his name is alive songs.

keythhtyek, Monday, 30 May 2011 05:22 (fourteen years ago)

that's cool. I didn't know Erika sang on Stars on ESP. That is one of my favorites!

I think it is safe to say that Warn is sitting on piles and piles of unreleased tapes. I haven't really been so much into much that he's done post-Stars, tho I did like Detrola & his production for Nomo has been really great. I do know that Warn has tapes from sessions w/ Ian Masters in some Buddhist in Laos or something. Now, those I would be interested to hear.

well, samples

keythhtyek, Monday, 30 May 2011 05:53 (fourteen years ago)

actually that may not include ian masters, there may be more than one mountain ocean sun release

keythhtyek, Monday, 30 May 2011 05:55 (fourteen years ago)

oh this has to be what I was thinking of, I mean, unless it is another side project in a different remote Buddhist enclave w/ glockenspiels & what not. See, I totally acknowledge both Warn & Ian's talents, but I think they are at their best when retaining some element of pop, however abstracted.
