Richard Marx - S&D

Actually don't you think that if Patrick Bateman declared a fondness for Brand X (the band, not another designer logo), the book would've been more ambiguous and strange and WAAAY less obvious? It would've been a real book then and not a satiric schematic. Ellis is funny and everything but if you want a real transgressive trip into darkness that leaves you feeling soiled and uneasy afterward try A.M. Homes' 'The End of Alice' or Gordon Lish's 'Dear Mr Capote'. Also, I think Ellis fucked up by having Bateman ridicule Elvis Costello, but such is the cruelty of time viz. old music reviews

Despite the sub-Duran Duran video attempt, "Keep Coming Back" is actually rather good! Come on, you know it's true! I also liked that one that was a straight photocopy of the Eagles' "Good Day in Hell". What? You don't know that one?

dave q, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You just don't get hair like that in the charts anymore.

stevo, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Growing up I think I received Richard Marx like lungs breathe air. "Hazard" was so omnipresent, I don't think I would have been able to understand that liking it was a personal choice rather than an immutable aspect of reality.

Tim, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

what was richard marx's big hit and why can't i remember it now? in elementary school music class we were forced to learn how to play the melody of it on the keyboard (how "new wave" of us.)

jess, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

You had keyboards in yr elementary school? Try being forced to duplicate it on an 'autoharp'!

geeta, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

hehe, i am currently forcing my keyboard kiddies to play 'cherry lips' and the theme from 'the simpsons'

"It Don't Mean Nothing"

Baaauuughhhahahahaha!

Dave225, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I'd thought he was pleasant but uninteresting, and I was puzzled by his stardom; then "Hazard" astonished me with its sadness and beauty; I wasn't expecting anything like that from him: the mystery and pain of life, what's THAT doing here?

Frank Kogan, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

the big hit was 'right here waiting'. and if anyone says anything truly appreciative about that song, i'm outta here.

Dave M., Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I remember when it was the question of who would succeed more, him or Robbie Nevil.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 20 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

"Right Here Waiting" has a catchy melody. If Elliot Smith had written it and recorded it in his style, it'd be his best effort ever, and we'd all praise it.

todd: you bastard etc.

Dave M., Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Todd, you bastard, if Elliot Smith wrote "Waiting For You", he wouldn't be Elliot Smith. He'd be Christopher Cross.

Daver, Friday, 21 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Yeah, well, Christopher Cross wrote better melodies than Elliot Smith is capable of, too. Anybody on this list thinking for him or herself?

Todd Brandenburg, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Tim is dead right about "Hazard". I was utterly despairing of the world (for both personal and political reasons) when it was out so I drowned my sorrows in it - my world was falling in, and it had some sort of meaning. All his other songs are dreadful Sloppy Bit fodder.

Robin Carmody, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I think "All By Myself" is the best example of what I'm trying to get at in my little responses above. Dressed up in Badfinger's clothing, that song's easy to love, and it should be loved, since it's terrific. I can't remember which screaming drone passing herself off as a "good singer" covered it a few years back, but you know the version I refer to--it was a big international smash, over-produced so's you wouldn't ever suspect it was originally written and recorded by someone or something "cool" or "hip". But you see that's what makes it a good song. It can withstand the force of different styles. Singer/writers like Richard Marx are funny to look at, but one should try to think outside the silly little indie box for at least a moment. I mean, you are aware that metalheads and fratboys think you're as embarrassing as you think they are, right? And who the fuck is to say that you're right, that you really do have the corner on cool? It becomes horrifyingly like religion. I seem to have an agenda. Must figure out what it is. Good night.

Todd Brandenburg, Saturday, 22 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

Are you all being serious?

Ally, Sunday, 23 June 2002 00:00 (twenty-three years ago)

I like to think about the people (who surely existed) who heard Should've Known Better and thought "Wow, I didn't know Richard Marx could ROCK!"

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 30 November 2012 22:31 (thirteen years ago)

Don't Mean Nothing and Should've Known Better were actually his first two singles. The ballads came later.

awww dammit

Matt Armstrong, Friday, 30 November 2012 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

yeah Marx's early rockers weren't bad at all. "Don't Mean Nothing" actually has Joe Walsh (which makes sense: it's a "Long Run" rewrite).

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 1 December 2012 00:00 (thirteen years ago)

and it must be pointed out:

Marx placed himself in the record books by being the first solo artist to have his first seven singles hit the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart (3, 3, 2, 1, 1, 1, 4)

Not to mention his songwriting/production credits.

I could be wrong, but Marx's hair was a topic of discussion even when people had ridiculous hair everywhere, right? Because that's just plain silly.

Richard Marx leaned his head over the West Hollywood restaurant table and poked his fingers into the top of his notoriously lush mane.

"You can see right here, I have no hair spray," the pop singer said. "I don't ever use hair spray. I just have thick hair, which I think (upsets) a lot of bald critics."

I still think Marx's "Angelia" is one of the best hair-metal ballads of the 80s - it's basically just a Def Leppard ripoff. Haven't heard that song in decades but I'm sure I'd still like it today.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 18:43 (thirteen years ago)

Yeah, I guess the way the guitar sounds reminds me of Hysteria a bit. His voice kills any metal aspect. Hair Ballad.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 23:28 (thirteen years ago)

He's playing a small club here in a couple of weeks, same place I'm seeing Graham Parker.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 4 December 2012 23:38 (thirteen years ago)

Which would you prefer, Josh -- a punked-up cover of "Should've Known Better" by Parker or Marx doing an acousti-sensitive "You Can't Be Too Strong"?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Tuesday, 4 December 2012 23:42 (thirteen years ago)

Good question! Marx is more versatile, so maybe Marx doing Parker? Then again, Parker doing Marx would be more fun. Marx clearly writes songs others like to sing.

Marx popped on stage for one of his songs when I saw Keith Urban a while back.

This is such a funny way to end this article. Though recording a Christmas album w Kenny Loggins is probably a better way to earn money than writing a story about how you insulted a guy you never met and then impressed your boozehound friends by avoiding a bar fight.

At one time, Rogers Park had been an Irish and Jewish neighborhood, but immigration and suburbanization transformed its demographics to equal thirds white, black, and Latino, with a few Middle Eastern grocers mixed in for diversity. The Lighthouse was the last redoubt of white folks too sentimental—or too broke—to leave the old neighborhood. Sitting next to the stubborn ethnics on the torn vinyl stools were broken, drunken men and women who lived in adult care facilities on Sheridan Road, the neighborhood’s main drag.

My favorite part:

Until I wrote that blog post, I hadn’t thought about Richard Marx in more than 20 years. Back in 1989, my friend Marty was trying to describe the roster of a celebrity softball game, but couldn’t come up with the name of one of the musicians.

“Who’s that guy who really sucks?” Marty asked.

I knew immediately. “Richard Marx?” I replied.

Marty’s face lit up. “Yeah! That’s it!”

I like it because the guy writing the article depicts himself as a not-particularly-influential critic who makes an offhanded comment thinking nothing of it, and finds himself sucked into an a comically ominous battle with a soft rock B-lister. I think he approaches the situation half-wanting to blow off Richard Marx as some lame has-been, and so he never takes Marx seriously, just riding the wave of this bizarre experience to the point where he ends up having an uncomfortable face-to-face meeting.

“Explain to me why I’m shameless,” Richard Marx said.

Had I given it more thought, I would have written that Richard Marx was the kind of musician who wouldn’t be ashamed to record anything he thought would sell a million copies. But I didn’t want to say that to his face.

"You called me shameless in my hometown, where my family can read this.”

That was a douchey thing to say, especially since Richard Marx is married to a model and I’d woken up alone that morning. I let it pass, though. I wasn’t there to start another argument.

yeah .. i think thats pretty cool actually ...

mark e, Sunday, 13 January 2013 21:29 (thirteen years ago)

Richard Marx was the kind of musician who wouldn’t be ashamed to record anything he thought would sell a million copies.

what does this even mean? As an artist I want to record a song bought only by the Edward McClelland claque?

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 January 2013 21:33 (thirteen years ago)

i'm super-curious why marx is so worked up about the phrase "shamelesness," but why should a journalist be expected to explore that, or even defend his work, when he can just hem, haw, hand the offended a copy of his book about obama and write a tell-all later?

da croupier, Sunday, 13 January 2013 21:34 (thirteen years ago)

no question he gets defensive about music. Besides the Adam Curry kerfuffle, I remember reading an irate letter in his name after Entertainment Weekly made disparaging remarks about him in the mid nineties.

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 January 2013 21:38 (thirteen years ago)

what does this even mean? As an artist I want to record a song bought only by the Edward McClelland claque?

It's doing what you want without concern for how it might be received vs. cynically doing exactly what you think will sell. Isn't this the classic 'sell-out' debate?

Poliopolice, Sunday, 13 January 2013 22:16 (thirteen years ago)

oh is that what the debate was about

the little prince of inane false binary hype (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 13 January 2013 22:19 (thirteen years ago)

the sellout argument is kinda moot if you never liked him in the first place though, surely

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 13 January 2013 22:21 (thirteen years ago)

he's referring to the Alan Vega-Colin Newman collaboration that Marx left in the vaults because the record company wanted "Endless Summer Nights."

Listened to his interview on Low Times a week or so ago and he revealed that his first (or one of his first) recorded vocal performances was the "all niiiiight" background vocal on Lionel Richie's "All Night Long". Which sucks, because now when I listen to that song it's THE ONLY THING I CAN HEAR.

first I think it's time I kick a little verse! (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 4 August 2013 21:12 (twelve years ago)

I like "Endless Summer Nights", "The Way She Loves Me", "Take This Heart", and uh...probably a few more.

Neanderthal, Sunday, 4 August 2013 21:40 (twelve years ago)

"don't mean nothing", which i'd call the best fake eagles song ever except 3 of the eagles are on it so i'm not sure there's anything 'fake' about it, and of course 'hazard' are the only two i'll really rep for, there are a few others i can get more mild pleasure than mild annoyance from ("satisfied", "children of the night" a pretty big guilty pleasure, "endless summer nights" which could probably use more sax tbh). no use for "right here waiting" or "hold on to the nights".

Albini interviews Fulks:

A: So, this has nothing to do with your music, but I'm gonna ask you about it. Are you familiar with—there's a short film that your lovely wife, Donna, has been asked to be in that I have also been asked to be in. Are you familiar with this?

F: Sure. I told her never in a million years to even approach you because you would be uninterested, but it sounds like there's a possibility you could do it.

A: Well, what happened is—it's a short film about a Twitter beef between a writer and a musical celebrity, let's say a slightly passe musical celebrity along the lines of a Richard Marx.

F: Like Groucho Marx but from Winnetka.

A: When I read about that original Twitter beef, my initial reaction was that the writer guy, who was all incensed about how cheap Richard Marx was—my initial reaction was that that guy was a cock and a half, and I hoped that Richard Marx punched him square in the nose. So I was curious to read the script, because I wanted to see if the script was from the perspective of Richard Marx or from the perspective of the writer. Or if it was from some external perspective.

F: Have you read the script?

A: I did read the script. And now I'm kind of creeped by it, and I kind of don't want to do it. But I feel like I'm an awkward position, because it seems like this guy has written this part for me to play me, saying things that I would never say about someone I would never say them about.

F: That's kind of why I told her that I didn't think you'd be interested in it. Because it's you playing you, right?

A: I think that's the idea. Were you aware of this Marxstroversy when it happened?

F: I guess I did read an article about it somewhere, yeah.

A: Secondarily, I'm a little freaked about it because I appeared on—there was a local taping of a podcast, the Scharpling podcast [Low Times]. It's Tom Scharpling from The Best Show. He and a couple of other people from the show have a podcast, where it's more related to music. Anyway. They taped it at the Hideout, Chicago's friendliest tavern, and they had me and Richard Marx as guests. So I actually met Richard Marx.

F: And he wasn't a cock—he was a nice guy.

A: Well, you know, he seemed like he was a little out of touch and maybe a little full of his own dump. But I find it really hard to think ill of a guy who's self-aware enough to come down to a thing where he knows he might get picked on. I thought that was, relatively speaking, big of him.

F: To want to punch a music blogger is an inherently creditable notion. (Laughter.)

the problem w/ the blogger discussed above is that he can't imagine a person who could make the sort of music marx makes (and continues to make) doing so in earnest. i see no reason to doubt marx's commitment to even the dreck-iest of his music.
