what are these?

iatee is right -- they're from Adult/Child, which, as (s)he says, is really mixed. "It's Trying To Say (Baseball)" is a pretty bouncy, awesome little tune sung by Dennis. "It's Over Now" was on the GV box -- it's this really heavy, orchestrated ballad with a really lugubrious slowed down vocal by Carl. I have to admit: "Hey Little Tomboy" from that record may have the creepiest lyrics of all time -- but the tune is undeniable.

Warms my heart to see high placement of Let The Wind Blow. So perfect. Cabin Essence top 10 is right on as well, mebbe my favorite smile item. But no Dance Dance Dance? ;_;

"let the wind blow" is a great song and should've been on my list. it covers a lot of musical ground in two and a half minutes.

i keep coming back to smiley smile and wild honey, even if the former is kind of denigrated since it's not smile. but for me they are really satisfying records, as long as you skip "transcendental meditation" (in theory I like the dissonant nature of that song but it just doesn't work, and certainly breaks the mood of the LP).

i have to admit that none of the subsequent albums really do it for me, even though there are a lot of gems sprinkled around. i just can't accept "sunflower" or "holland" as great albums b/c there are a few too many disposable songs, and occasionally an embarrassing one. (and some songs that are somehow both great _and_ embarrassing, like some of dennis's stuff like "cuddle up.")

i should add that i like a lot of textures/instrumentation they were exploring in late 60s/early 70s--the electric piano, the moog bass, etc.

oh and finally i do really like "do it again" but somehow what that song _signifies_ (a self-conscious, nostalgic return to "classic" beach boys themes) kind of gets in the way of how it _sounds_.

The old smiley smile/wild honey 2fer was my first beach boys. I remember it had amazing liner notes. Wish I still had it for that reason.

Break Away's a good song, although the extra dry production has always seemed strange and uncharacteristic of Brian. I think it says in the two-fer liner notes about that one that Mike was pissed that it was "under-produced", which is sort of true.

the '70s album reissues were done later and the liner notes are hit and miss (most are missing the band-history stuff that was on all of the 60s stuff) and there are _no_ bonus tracks. but they sound real good.

although if the liners were more thorough i guess it'd mostly be about band members' drug abuse and mental breakdowns, etc. just an ugly, tangled story i imagine.

so annoyed that capitol took two-fers w/ bonus tracks out of print and replaced them with those stereo+mono things. although i admit i prefer everything in mono. but i hate that all the great bonus tracks just disappeared. see also most recent reissues of elvis costello LPs.

"reggie dunbar" sounds like a jamaican producer; maybe it's murry wilson's rasta alter-ego.

I'm not sure I understand this premise. I guess I would say that I like how early rock and roll manifests in studio bubblegum in the '70s and that the one-two of "Do It Again" and "I Can Hear Music" on 20/20 is an early example of it.

There does seem to be an almost political edge to Do It Again that some of the other not-bad revival tracks like Keepin' the Summer Alive and Good Timin' don't have.

Bah! It's too late for me to load up my iPhone with beach boys stuff after catching up with this thread. Haven't had a beach boys phase all year and I need to rectify that. Could do with rediscovering some stuff I haven't heard to death though. I mean, I cherish my Smile box set to bits but whenever I listen to Smile it largely goes over my head through familiarity

I still maintain 'Smiley Smile' is one of the best things the Boys ever did. People really must've thought they'd gone insane when they dropped that one after Pet Sounds.

I do like it but I think subsequent albums got that mellow, homespun and acid-fried feel better (ie, Friends). The presence of Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains is *really* incongruous and jarring.

I was confusing "Do It Again" with "Rock and Roll Music" and the whole storyline surrounding 15 Big Ones. I take it back.

When I was in my full on superfan phase, I couldn't get enough of the 67-73 material. It felt like discovering a whole new, sometimes even better band than the one with all those well-known pop songs. After living with it for a few years, though, I'm back to loving the old stuff again. Will refrain from ruffling feathers by calling out specific tracks...

that second era really is a goldmine though, and one pretty much completely unknown to non-obsessives.

there is a mildly challopsy aftertaste when people venerate the late 60s/early 70s stuff and kind of pass over the mid-60s stuff in silence.
