Naive Teen Idol, Friday, 22 May 2009 02:13 (seventeen years ago)

Good to see some Breakaway lovin among the hardcore BB contingent. I'm gonna have to think about this one hard before posting mine.

ch4rlie fr4m3, Friday, 22 May 2009 08:42 (seventeen years ago)

good picks so far!

iatee, Friday, 22 May 2009 09:08 (seventeen years ago)

7. It's Trying To Say (Baseball)
9. It's Over Now

what are these?

ch4rlie fr4m3, Friday, 22 May 2009 09:17 (seventeen years ago)

tracks from brian's abandoned 'adult/child' album.

those + "still I dream of it" are v. good.

the rest is quite bad. it's all on youtube if you're curious.

iatee, Friday, 22 May 2009 09:20 (seventeen years ago)

i think i have certain tracks from landlocked and adult child, with some overlap between them. i like the one about eating carrot smoothies or whatever.

ch4rlie fr4m3, Friday, 22 May 2009 09:26 (seventeen years ago)

10 is way too few for such a glorious act, but...

7. You Still Believe In Me
8. It Came To My Window

7. It's Trying To Say (Baseball)
9. It's Over Now

what are these?

iatee is right -- they're from Adult/Child, which, as (s)he says, is really mixed. "It's Trying To Say (Baseball)" is a pretty bouncy, awesome little tune sung by Dennis. "It's Over Now" was on the GV box -- it's this really heavy, orchestrated ballad with a really lugubrious slowed down vocal by Carl. I have to admit: "Hey Little Tomboy" from that record may have the creepiest lyrics of all time -- but the tune is undeniable.

I think it might be safe to assume that 97% of people in the world who know what 'adult/child' is are male

iatee, Friday, 22 May 2009 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

It's safe to say that the long version of 'Til I die on Landlocked (which is goes down with 'adult/child' as rare beach boys stuff) is the best version.

With Me Tonight
Wouldn't It Be Nice
Johnny Carson
Shortnin' Bread

I Can Hear Music
This Whole World
I'm So Young
When A Man Needs A Woman

^^^BB songs I have learned to play (and that for some reason my 2 yo daughter likes to sing along to)

emotionally abusive jowls (Shakey Mo Collier), Thursday, 27 May 2010 20:18 (sixteen years ago)

1. Please Let Me Wonder
2. The Warmth Of The Sun
3. In My Room
4. Let Him Run Wild
5. Caroline, No
6. God Only Knows
7. Your Summer Dream (I wish I had taken these lyrics to heart when I was a teenager)
8. Kiss Me Baby
9. I'm Waiting For The Day
10. The Girls on the Beach (see comment on #7)

These go to 11: Guess I'm Dumb (recorded during Glen Campbell's brief stint with the band, but this is all Brian's songwriting and production at his absolute peak, and missing from many fans' collections)

Ah, 10 songs just ain't enough....

12. Don't Talk (Put Your Head On My Shoulder)
13. Don't Worry Baby
14. I Get Around
15. Busy Doin' Nothin'
16. California Girls (one of the greatest pop confections ever!)
17. Still I Dream Of It
18. In The Back Of My Mind
19. Here Today
20. And Your Dream Comes True

Honorable Mentions: Honking Down The Highway, Custom Machine, In The Parking Lot, With Me Tonight, The Surfer Moon, Good To My Baby, Sherry She Needs Me (a.k.a. Sandy She Needs Me, a.k.a. She Said That She Needs Me), Dance Dance Dance, Be With Me

And how 'bout some love for their oft-overlooked instrumentals: Summer Means New Love, Let's Go Away For Awhile, The Nearest Faraway Place, and maybe Diamond Head.

I worship Brian Wilson. For me, his 1965-66 recordings set the gold standard for record production and intricate, gorgeous vocal harmonies that surpass anything recorded before or since...

i do wonder if certain members of the band fought to have all the phases of the beach boys given "fair" representation on this box set. the last box set basically skipped the latter-day (late 70s–90s) stuff or passed over it very quickly.

probably about 3% of beach boys fanatics are truly interested in hearing outtakes from "keepin the summer alive"

1. I Get Around
2. God Only Knows
3. Don't Talk (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)
4. Gettin' Hungry
5. Don't Worry Baby
6. Don't Back Down
7. Kiss Me Baby (this will have to stand in for the suite of ballads on side B of Beach Boys Today)
8. Wendy
9. Wild Honey
10. Wonderful

11. Hushabye
12. When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)
13. Darlin'
14. Falling in Love (Lady) (will have to stand in for the better Dennis tracks--there are only a few IMO)
15. Little Honda
16. Girl Don't Tell Me
17. You Still Believe in Me
18. This Whole World
19. 'Til I Die
20. Surfer Girl

although i'm kind of a diehard fan and listen to those almost-no-Brian '70s albums and enjoy (most of) them, I still feel their best stuff is from 64-66. i don't get the same burst of exaltation from the later stuff.

also, it's hard to separate the different parts of Smile for me, which is why only one song from that project made my list(s).

how did "I Get Around" fare in the poll? as huge as it is, I think that tune is not fully appreciated. it's extraordinary, one of the very best singles of the 1960s.

I guess that's a pretty happy result, although there's a preponderance of ballads and softer tunes. beach boys were a rock band!

anyone else rate gettin' hungry? that's one of those unintentionally (?) avant-garde things they came up with frequently enough. i love the stark contrast b/t verses and chorus.

"let the wind blow" is a great song and should've been on my list. it covers a lot of musical ground in two and a half minutes.

i keep coming back to smiley smile and wild honey, even if the former is kind of denigrated since it's not smile. but for me they are really satisfying records, as long as you skip "transcendental meditation" (in theory I like the dissonant nature of that song but it just doesn't work, and certainly breaks the mood of the LP).

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:49 (twelve years ago)

i have to admit that none of the subsequent albums really do it for me, even though there are a lot of gems sprinkled around. i just can't accept "sunflower" or "holland" as great albums b/c there are a few too many disposable songs, and occasionally an embarrassing one. (and some songs that are somehow both great _and_ embarrassing, like some of dennis's stuff like "cuddle up.")

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:51 (twelve years ago)

i should add that i like a lot of textures/instrumentation they were exploring in late 60s/early 70s--the electric piano, the moog bass, etc.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:52 (twelve years ago)

oh and finally i do really like "do it again" but somehow what that song _signifies_ (a self-conscious, nostalgic return to "classic" beach boys themes) kind of gets in the way of how it _sounds_.

flesh, the devil, and a wolf (wolf) (amateurist), Friday, 13 September 2013 00:53 (twelve years ago)

by the time they get around to the last few 70s albums they just kind of give up on there being anything meaningful to write about tho, which is a bit lol. Peter Buck writes the "Love You" ones, I think Tom Petty writes one of the others

Break Away's a good song, although the extra dry production has always seemed strange and uncharacteristic of Brian. I think it says in the two-fer liner notes about that one that Mike was pissed that it was "under-produced", which is sort of true.

it's al who complained about the production

by the time they get around to the last few 70s albums they just kind of give up on there being anything meaningful to write about tho, which is a bit lol. Peter Buck writes the "Love You" ones, I think Tom Petty writes one of the others

the '70s album reissues were done later and the liner notes are hit and miss (most are missing the band-history stuff that was on all of the 60s stuff) and there are _no_ bonus tracks. but they sound real good.

although if the liners were more thorough i guess it'd mostly be about band members' drug abuse and mental breakdowns, etc. just an ugly, tangled story i imagine.

so annoyed that capitol took two-fers w/ bonus tracks out of print and replaced them with those stereo+mono things. although i admit i prefer everything in mono. but i hate that all the great bonus tracks just disappeared. see also most recent reissues of elvis costello LPs.

"reggie dunbar" sounds like a jamaican producer; maybe it's murry wilson's rasta alter-ego.

I bet at some point Mike Love tried to convince the boys to do a reggae album

mike love does not approve of marijuana though

in some alternate universe it was carl wilson rather than paul simon who went to kingston to do production work in the early '70s and came back this "this whole world an' ting"

i do really like "do it again" but somehow what that song _signifies_ (a self-conscious, nostalgic return to "classic" beach boys themes) kind of gets in the way of how it _sounds_.

I'm not sure I understand this premise. I guess I would say that I like how early rock and roll manifests in studio bubblegum in the '70s and that the one-two of "Do It Again" and "I Can Hear Music" on 20/20 is an early example of it.

There does seem to be an almost political edge to Do It Again that some of the other not-bad revival tracks like Keepin' the Summer Alive and Good Timin' don't have.

Bah! It's too late for me to load up my iPhone with beach boys stuff after catching up with this thread. Haven't had a beach boys phase all year and I need to rectify that. Could do with rediscovering some stuff I haven't heard to death though. I mean, I cherish my Smile box set to bits but whenever I listen to Smile it largely goes over my head through familiarity

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 01:01 (twelve years ago)

I still maintain 'Smiley Smile' is one of the best things the Boys ever did. People really must've thought they'd gone insane when they dropped that one after Pet Sounds.

Pingu Unchained (dog latin), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 01:06 (twelve years ago)

I do like it but I think subsequent albums got that mellow, homespun and acid-fried feel better (ie, Friends). The presence of Good Vibrations and Heroes and Villains is *really* incongruous and jarring.

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 16:20 (twelve years ago)

I was confusing "Do It Again" with "Rock and Roll Music" and the whole storyline surrounding 15 Big Ones. I take it back.

When I was in my full on superfan phase, I couldn't get enough of the 67-73 material. It felt like discovering a whole new, sometimes even better band than the one with all those well-known pop songs. After living with it for a few years, though, I'm back to loving the old stuff again. Will refrain from ruffling feathers by calling out specific tracks...

that second era really is a goldmine though, and one pretty much completely unknown to non-obsessives.

what's up ugly girls? (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 17 September 2013 17:18 (twelve years ago)

there is a mildly challopsy aftertaste when people venerate the late 60s/early 70s stuff and kind of pass over the mid-60s stuff in silence.
