this song featured in a discussion i had with a friend a little while ago about the death of the metaphor in chart pop. "let's make a song about birthday sex, called 'birthday sex.'" because, you know, "16 candles," who can tell what that's about?

anyway, it's ok. B-/C+.

cool showy synth textures, rhythm constantly shifting between triplets and straight 4/4, a big dramatic outro that sounds completely different from the rest of the song -- ymmv, but it has a lot going for it that is 'noteworthy' in the context of the stuff it's being played between on R&B radio.

murda mo not mo murda (some dude), Friday, 18 September 2009 02:22 (sixteen years ago)

basically i like all the songs on the album - i can see how people might hear it as generic, or (staaaans) terius-jocking, or repetitive, but i guess what it comes down to is i like the kid jeremih a lot (andy k compares him to saadiq in his amg review - otm!!) and you really get the feeling this is exactly what he and the schulz guy always wanted to make; there's real charm and talent in the attention to detail they've put in to what is pretty much the most 2009 record you will ever hear that even when it's on something i wouldnt normally be mad for like the gaga-goth europop on 'runway' it still draws me into their shit cos it's somehow just theirs and theirs alone, i dunno.

r|t|c, Friday, 18 September 2009 02:27 (sixteen years ago)

nearly embarked on a schulz - peanuts folly there BUT I DIDNT

r|t|c, Friday, 18 September 2009 02:28 (sixteen years ago)

yeah listening to those last couple songs I heard a little bit of a certain high joyful tone I identify most w/ Saadiq and (dare I say it) Stevie Wonder -- always annoyed me when people referred to "Birthday Sex" as being somehow post-Dream when if anything it's just yet another guy with a high voice who's similarly post-R.

murda mo not mo murda (some dude), Friday, 18 September 2009 02:41 (sixteen years ago)

like ok, 'jumpin' there is on the face of it like every lame ron browz wannabe banger you expect to come across - but tell me that's wack, with that rollercoaster chorus and all? shit is riveting imo.

ha i didnt dare say stevie either! that breakdown on 'starting all over' in partic is just pure class for a hundred reasons: i'm saying hacks is the last thing these guys are.

the thing about post-dream/post-r is that yeah (musico)logically of course it's post-r because that's what the-dream is. but yknow, not playing dollshouse or anything but i could well imagine terius being more of an issue in these guy's minds as they were making it. in any case however it's wayyyy more interesting as post-dream just because of the delicious irony of 'birthday sex' in its mystic obviousness actually being a genuine international solo hit: time will wash this irritation from the history books but never, i bet, from terius' very psyche. (or so i like to imagine.)

BTW the best song on this album is "My Sunshine" the uplifting ray of sunlight over a funeral scene fade out into end credits ballad. Check it.

Tim F, Saturday, 19 September 2009 23:59 (sixteen years ago)

i don't know about uplifting but i think you're right about funeral scene - "how could someone just take your soul so fast / and now youre gone"? and "if i could hold you again" might be a standard line but once i realised you could hear the chorus as having a double meaning............. :(

incidentally the abrupt switch in tone from that song into "...bet you'll fall in love with my ride!" is my favourite cackle of 09 i think.

r|t|c, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 21:38 (sixteen years ago)

brainwasher i take the point those other albums might be being underrated here (especially pleasure p's) but wtf man ur trippin so, so hard if you think you're gonna make that point on the basis of them not being as "generic and samey" as the jeremih

r|t|c, Tuesday, 22 September 2009 21:44 (sixteen years ago)

this record is brilliant yeah, listened to it more than anything else this year probably. quite surprised by how both the big ballads are so good, after initial "this sounds like what u2 make" reservations about "my sunshine" i've been listening to it loads now. don't like "runway" too much tho.

the production on "raindrops" !!

ship i really dig that song except for the insanely retarded metaphor in the chorus -- what's with this song & the new jt/timbo & fast food? anyway, the production on this album definitely surprised me -- altho it prob shouldnt have bcuz of how many subtle production tricks are in "birthday sex" -- and it's def why i keep wanting to like the album

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:49 (sixteen years ago)

i've kinda tuned out the lyrics -- "break up/make up" is a big red flag at lazy couplets ahoy -- but the vocals and the melody, especially on the bridge, are so great. baby James and I have bopped along to that song many a time.

guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 03:04 (sixteen years ago)

i held off listening to the album for ages b/c "birthday sex" was so perfect, but in that fragile don't-know-if-i-want-any-more way - it's a lot better than i thought it would be, but i think i agree w/jordan about his voice - it doesn't bother me in small doses but so much reediness over 45 mins is a bit much.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 11:03 (sixteen years ago)

i'm streaming this right now--i think i just really like the sonics of it enough to carry the parts where the songs or his voice aren't quite up to par? so i'm like on the cusp of purchasing it but with my self-imposed 2 records/week limit not totally sure if/when that'll happen.

inevitable procession of the luda verse makes this track seem more slight and generic than it really is, needed to assert itself a tad longer before and maybe even during. still v v v good though - schulz is a beast, like who else other than these guys would bother chipmunking the chorus so very lightly like at 3mins

I was disappointed they didn't give "Break Up to Make Up" a singles push. That one sounded like a hit to me.

It wasn't high art, but that self-titled Jeremih album was really an oddity: A major-label R&B album written and produced entirely by a singer and his producer. That was really refreshing. Judging by the Ludacris feature on the first single from his next album, though, I'm guessing the new one will be more of the typical by-committee R&B album.

nothing relaly jumped out at me on first listen - no 'make up to break up' or 'birthday sex'. feels more like a long, really well produced EP than an album. kind of reminds me of lloyd's like me the young goldie in terms of just being a solid collection of songs where the production really suits the singer and vice versa.

wanted to turn it off when the 50 track came on though

more or less see this album as sorta like the awkward self-conscious teenage growing pained older brother to the exuberant little bubbleworld of the first. (by that i'm not saying the earlier record wasn't derivative, just that it was derivative in its own way; it's the difference between 'birthday sex' and 'sleepers', the stronger suggestion of jeremih speaking through other ppl's voices and seeing the stuff he does through other ppl's eyes.)

like i mentioned on the rolling thread though i'm not really into being overly critical of this album cos even on its least successful cuts i still think there's always something earcatching to enjoy, either on the production or vocal side, and yeah basically i remain fully supportive of these talented & (especially so in a barren r&b year like this) unusual dudes.

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:22 (fifteen years ago)

by the by a couple of cuts on this (mainly the two after '5 senses', but in small doses elsewhere too) totally make me think jeremih should probably have a career on stage or in glee or something.

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:28 (fifteen years ago)

agree the new thread is unnecessary btw, if it wasn't already clear.

r|t|c, Thursday, 18 November 2010 05:30 (fifteen years ago)

i think this compares pretty badly to the first album, actually - seems a lot of the arrangements are stripped further back, which makes jeremih's reedy voice stick out a lot more - it gets kinda one-note over the course of an album. and there aren't any standouts on the same level as "birthday sex"/"imma star"/"raindrops".

i think there's a perfect balance of sleaziness & charm that really makes the song work -- i realized it when i was thinking too much about "love faces" & how trey songz really lacks tact in his songs, but i feel like jeremih in that song is sorta like a dick that would actually get a girl cuz his jokes are funny ("let's just take nine shots, we can call it 50") -- that balance of sleaziness & charm is also a big step up from "birthday sex" which i love as a song but jeremih's persona on that song is pretty ridiculous

I don't know how popular or respected he is, at least outside of ILM. I think a lot of people find the boyish tint of his voice annoying.

Agree his window might be closing. Bei Maejor is kind of doing the same thing, but with more gravity.

Evan R, Thursday, 12 July 2012 13:43 (thirteen years ago)

ok "popular and respected" is a slight stretch but people who mighnt have cared for his solo stuff now like him on hooks do they not

and i think his window's wide open, i'm just not certain he quite knows how to really distinguish himself solo any more

bei maejor is a charmless idiot

r|t|c, Thursday, 12 July 2012 13:59 (thirteen years ago)

I would have thought Jeremih would have gotten more of a bounce from that really fun Diggy song earlier this summer, but that track didn't have the shelf life I expected.

I'm really conflicted about Bei Maejor. I think he can be a sharp songwriter sometimes, but that's not the same as liking him. "The Truth" was a really cold slab of storytelling, and "Til We Get It Right" was just an absolutely wonderful track

keep forgetting to listen to the shlohmo ep

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 5 August 2014 17:27 (eleven years ago)

This teaser EP has me excited for the album, but I'm worried about the Mustard influence, too. Read an interview a few days ago where Jeremih took credit for "Show Me"—as he tells it, he was one of the song's primary writers, and was supposed to be on it instead of Chris Brown—so in his mind he claims some ownership of that whole sound, which is scary. There are so many more individualistic sounds he could be running with instead.

Evan R, Tuesday, 5 August 2014 17:56 (eleven years ago)

When I was creating 'Don't Tell 'Em,' I was feeling a way because I was a part of the 'Show Me' record, with Kid Ink and Chris Brown, as far as from the writing side," he said. "I was actually on that song before Chris. Nobody really knows this: The day I wrote 'Don't Tell 'Em' was the day 'Show Me' went No. 1. It was like, 'Man, can you believe the song that I helped on and that I was on, went No. 1?' I was like, let me make my own..."

I mean, that definitely explains a lot, but at this point I expect more vision from Jeremih than "I'm going to make my own version of that one Chris Brown song"

Evan R, Tuesday, 5 August 2014 18:02 (eleven years ago)

shitting on "don't tell em" privileges the auteur over the banger and when it comes to jeremih i'm not sure i can get with that

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 August 2014 21:08 (eleven years ago)

the guy's first ever single was a blatant rip off of the-dream, it's not like he's some historically original voice who must not be tampered down at any costs

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 August 2014 21:33 (eleven years ago)

It's tacky

Evan R, Tuesday, 5 August 2014 21:35 (eleven years ago)

it works. the song has other parts that work anyway.

i think you guys are being a bit too serious about this song.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 5 August 2014 21:41 (eleven years ago)

i think if Jeremih only had the Shlohmo EP out right now, or only had a standard issue Mustard radio song out right now, i might be tut tutting right along with you guys about the direction he's heading in. but instead he's got them both out, plus another EP, plus a release date for the album, and all of it's pretty dope to me and i'm happy to see dude winning.

some dude, Tuesday, 5 August 2014 22:09 (eleven years ago)

Yeah, I don't want to overstate my aversion to the single. It's not a travesty or anything. It's just a bit of a bummer that the guy is on a hot streak and this is the single we got. I really don't think it does justice to how spirited or inventive his recent output has been.

Evan R, Tuesday, 5 August 2014 22:17 (eleven years ago)

It's probably a 50th percentile DJ Mustard single; I'd be excited about it if it were a 70th or 80th percentile one

Evan R, Tuesday, 5 August 2014 22:19 (eleven years ago)

i think it's pretty good. only part that annoys me is "girl you know I'm from Chicago/ I act a fool, Bobby Brown wit it" because he delivers it like a punchline but Bobby's not from Chicago, it's just a string of unrelated lines.

some dude, Tuesday, 5 August 2014 22:46 (eleven years ago)

the one drawback of the song to me is that the "don't tell em" part of the chorus is kind of drab, which is a shame cuz the pre-chorus "oooh why why why why" is really great imo. but even the "don't tell em" part is ushered in by this little roll of hi hats and a satisfying lil bass drop so i still fuck w/ it.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 01:22 (eleven years ago)

It's just a bit of a bummer that the guy is on a hot streak and this is the single we got.

i was higher on 'late nights' than most people on this board iirc but 2013 was a lost year for him imo and we were almost halfway thru 2014 w/ stagnant buzz before this single dropped so i don't really agree w/ this statement

le goon (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 6 August 2014 01:24 (eleven years ago)

yeah. even if i didn't like the single, the Shlohmo EP had been delayed for like 6 months, and the album (which thank god is no longer called THUMPY JOHNSON) had been delayed for like 18 months. now we're getting 3 projects in the space of a couple months and a whole shitload of songs that sound nothing like "Don't Tell Em."

some dude, Wednesday, 6 August 2014 01:38 (eleven years ago)

Evan R, Friday, 10 October 2014 21:39 (eleven years ago)

i think the idea of them doing nothing to distract from "don't tell em" and then being like "bam here's the album" is interesting (if it works)

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Friday, 10 October 2014 22:17 (eleven years ago)

how'd they never shoot a video though

how many billboard top 10 songs since, like, 1990 don't have an official vide of any sort? can't be more than a dozen

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Friday, 10 October 2014 22:17 (eleven years ago)

Yeah it would be a cool experiment. Nothing they could do would make the song a bigger hit than it is now so why bother, I guess. They can promote the shit oh of some future single.

I don't watch or really like music videos so I don't mind that this song doesn't have one. (It's almost kind of refreshing coming on the heels of 2014, which saw critics write almost as much about videos as they did songs)

Evan R, Friday, 10 October 2014 23:05 (eleven years ago)

kind of refreshing to see that a song can smash without a video too, a video dropping seems to have so much more impact than the music dropping (cf "2 on" - that song had been around for MONTHS earlier this year, to little reaction, and then the video dropped and boom, everywhere)

lex pretend, Saturday, 11 October 2014 10:31 (eleven years ago)

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 13 October 2014 04:39 (eleven years ago)

I know "Show Me" came first and you love it but imo "Don't Tell 'Em" has a better singer, a better rapper, a better hook, even a better interpolation

Raccoon Newsy Wewsies (some dude), Monday, 13 October 2014 04:54 (eleven years ago)

also way better, more propulsive beat

Raccoon Newsy Wewsies (some dude), Monday, 13 October 2014 04:55 (eleven years ago)

other than better rapper i dont really agree about any of those things! and 'dont tell em' feels like such a cheap conceptual bite, too

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 13 October 2014 05:53 (eleven years ago)

the house reference feels so much more forced ... like the 'show me' ref was about the beat too

deej loaf (D-40), Monday, 13 October 2014 05:54 (eleven years ago)

weird this was such a slow burner, such a bit of fluff

the other song about butts in the top 5 (forksclovetofu), Monday, 13 October 2014 15:35 (eleven years ago)

"show me" is better but i always thought "don't tell em" was being underrated -- i think jeremih shines thru that song anyway once you can divorce it from "show me"/mustardwave in general

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 October 2014 16:37 (eleven years ago)

i've come around to "don't tell 'em" and rather like it now. maybe i'm just pleased to see that a song in 2014 has finally legitimately crossed over from being a big hit on hip-hop radio to becoming the same on pop.

dyl, Monday, 13 October 2014 16:49 (eleven years ago)

"Don't Tell Em" is tied w/ "Rack City" for highest charting Mustard song, history will forget "Show Me," y'all lost

Raccoon Newsy Wewsies (some dude), Monday, 13 October 2014 16:50 (eleven years ago)

also i was never really bothered by "don't tell em"'s similarity to "show me" bcuz jeremih was originally supposed to have "show me" so i can't fault dude for trying to get his slice

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 October 2014 16:53 (eleven years ago)

but ppl like kev or whoever lamenting that "don't tell em" isn't jeremih enough shows the blind spots of auteur fetishization imo

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 October 2014 16:54 (eleven years ago)

Jeremih's voice is more valuable than his aesthetic -- he has deep cuts with a distinctive sensibility but when he makes a hit it's just a cool hit song with Jeremih's cool voice on it and the shape it takes doesn't really matter

Raccoon Newsy Wewsies (some dude), Monday, 13 October 2014 16:56 (eleven years ago)

imo denigrating "auteur fetishists" can be useful in a rockist context when people are putting britney spears down or whoever and there are some problematic racial/sexist implications, but me pining for the jeremih of old is hardly the same thing

k3vin k., Monday, 13 October 2014 17:02 (eleven years ago)

i mean i just thought it was a lame song and preferred the kind of career jeremih used to have and his old style. i understand him having to hop on trends tho (and obv his career was built on biting dudes like the-dream anyway, so..)

k3vin k., Monday, 13 October 2014 17:04 (eleven years ago)

but anyway i've come around on the song a bit, i think it's a respectable 6/10 joint, but it's obviously more of a mustard (who i'm ambivalent about) vehicle than a jeremih one. there's not a lot of technical or emotional range; it's a limited song

k3vin k., Monday, 13 October 2014 17:05 (eleven years ago)

yeah it's fine but what stops me getting excited isn't so much where it fits into jeremih's career as where it fits into mustard's; it's a mustard vehicle that isn't even in the top tier of mustard 2014 singles

lex pretend, Monday, 13 October 2014 17:27 (eleven years ago)

i don't think it's much to get excited about as a song itself but as an agent to get his album matriculating i feel pretty good about it

snrub goin up on a tuesday (J0rdan S.), Monday, 13 October 2014 17:33 (eleven years ago)

which perhaps is an objectionable way of looking at the song but such are the economic realities of popular r&b in 2014

weird http://www.billboard.com/articles/news/6327425/jeremih-holding-back-his-career

J0rdan S., Friday, 21 November 2014 23:28 (eleven years ago)

This is straight out of an Onion article about Joe Biden:

Jeremih and his touring entourage are reportedly under investigation by police for causing $700 worth of damage to a Fuddrucker's restaurant in Billings, Mont., on Nov. 5. Police claim the singer's crew threw beer bottles when a manager intervened after a 17-year-old female employee complained about the group flirting with her. Charges haven't been filed, but a local radio station, KRSQ, is banning Jeremih's records. The singer didn't respond to Billboard's requests for comment after the accusations, but on Twitter he blamed the "unfortunate incident" on racism.

Evan R, Friday, 21 November 2014 23:38 (eleven years ago)

Not sure if I buy the "reclusive" angle—he's not, really—or that any of this rises that far beyond normal A&R disorganization. Interesting to learn he's probably to blame for not having a video though; lotta people wonder about that one

Evan R, Friday, 21 November 2014 23:40 (eleven years ago)

buried the lede here:

"Oui" sounds great on the radio but "Pass Dat" is incredible and really sets my expectations high for this album

easily one of the best albums i've heard this year

if you took out "give no fuks"/"feel like phil"/"royalty" and cut the tracklist down to 12 songs i would consider this a nearly perfect record. every other song ranges from good to incredible.

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 8 December 2015 04:54 (ten years ago)

thinking this is ultimately p good (unexpectedly so from my pov) with fitful lucid periods of inspiration. would have liked to go higher cos u can see almost touch a special album, or what a special album would be like, thru the party smoke but even with rejigging i think it might still just come up a couple songs short. a wonderful extendo ep for sure however

probably that's the cup half empty view idk. give it a few weeks

obv agree that the rap karaoke bloc (lol is thugger too pricey now or was jer like fuckit yo i got this) carries the blame with big sean saboteur in chief, constant low key struggle to fully recover its thread after that

i wasn't talking about sales, i was referring to the romanticisation and elevation of an artist on to a bit of a weird pedestal. i mean, that's not a bad thing, i was part of cassie fan club, if you hear it in the music you hear it in the music, but it shouldn't be surprising when others aren't quite as enraptured by the minutiae of their breathing

cher guevara (lex pretend), Monday, 14 December 2015 23:42 (ten years ago)

so you're just talking about...music fandom? interest in a particular artist? why the hell is Captain Hyperbole telling anyone else to tamper down the enthusiasm?

Shkreli, Martin & Wu (some dude), Monday, 14 December 2015 23:50 (ten years ago)

Def Jam has a knack for fucking up anything Jeremih-related but i do hope they capitalize on "Pass Dat." The Weeknd and Young Thug already did versions of it, they could use either/both of those for an official remix that would be huge but i think the song could do really well on its own too.

It’s Jeremih’s essential paradox: persistent unknowability in the face of skyrocketing fame....“The black knight, at the end, has always had to be unmasked,” he explains. “He always had to take off the helmet one day. It’s like the phantom of the opera, you had to unmask him. And right now, people are still in the stages of unmasking me. A lot of people don’t know how I talk. They don’t know how to say my name right. They don’t know a lot of the shit that is me, underneath the helmet.”
