trey songz is the most superfluous hook singer around right now. ive never heard a rap song with him singing the hook and been like "hm well im really glad my mans trey songz is singing right now"

Sonia, Judge Sotomayor (The Reverend), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:04 (seventeen years ago)

voted for "Girl You Know"

Sonia, Judge Sotomayor (The Reverend), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:05 (seventeen years ago)

they should have a deal or no deal type show where these trey songz features are in 50 separate cases and i have to go down to 1 to listen to for the rest of my life. the deal they offer me after every round is the chance to shoot myself in the head.

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:06 (seventeen years ago)

how do i choose between the 2 pistols songs?

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:07 (seventeen years ago)

2008: "Hood Love" (Maino featuring Trey Songz)

^this has to be one of the worst rap songs ever

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

not that i've heard it, just speculating

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:09 (seventeen years ago)

2008: "Ya Heard Me" (B.G. featuring Lil' Wayne, Juvenile & Trey Songz)

probably should've voted for this because i could list 300 living musicians i'd want to hear on featured on the hot boys reunion single before i got to trey songz

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:12 (seventeen years ago)

2008: "Ride" (Ace Hood feat. Trey Songz)

this is fucking horrible. ace hood sex raps + songz hook = i give up

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

2008: "Cuddy Buddy" (Mike Jones featuring Trey Songz, Twista & Lil Wayne)

had no idea songz was involved with this, pretty good joint imo

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:15 (seventeen years ago)

im gonna follow the rev's lead and start referring to all "f/ my mans trey songz" as a mini-genre called "songz"

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

as in

2008: "Da Baddest" (Big Kuntry King featuring Trey Songz)

this has to be one of the most unnecessary songz ever - couldn't you have just sampled pimp c on the hook?

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:17 (seventeen years ago)

i lked 'pop rose' for abt .5 secondz so ill go for that but mostly i agree wit j0rdan

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:19 (seventeen years ago)

2008: "I Just Wanna" (AZ featuring Sheek Louch, Max B & Trey Songz)

i dont get it this - you are a hood ny rappers like AZ and you recruit some hood ny rappers like louch and max b and you pay for a SONGZ HOOK why???

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:20 (seventeen years ago)

southern posse cuts sex raps + trey songz has to be the worst super mini genre ever - who would want to listen to this crap??

2005: "Hold U Down" (Bun B featuring Trey Songz, Mike Jones, & Birdman)

hazmat yayo (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:22 (seventeen years ago)

J0rdan S4rgent, why are you hating on MMTS?

Sonia, Judge Sotomayor (The Reverend), Wednesday, 27 May 2009 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

i can't even figure what song to vote for as best, even "Girl You Know" is better in the album version w/o him on it

but to take it back to old school ilx defending the indefensible, i like the kinda rambling endless verses MMTS drops on these 2 remixes:

ok, so lloyd butches it up for one song. whatever, not disproving my point. what's telling is that his hook on "forever" is better than any mmts has ever done on a rap song.

Finally, we'll have a more expanded story on Trey Songz on Tuesday, but for today, we had to bring the origins on his now-signature "Yuuuggghhh!" ad lib. You've heard it on his songs and you've heard it on records he's not even on, like Drake's "Best I Ever Had." Where did it come from?

"It just came about," he said recently in his new hometown of Atlanta. "I'm a fool, really, in the studio. I said it on one record. I don't remember what record it was on first. Then I started going places and people would do it. That's when I knew it was something that was catching on. Now I gotta do it on every song."

ok i figured out what this is referring to but i always just thought he was saying "yup" in a really obnoxious way.

he is saying yuup

The Brainwasher, Wednesday, 12 August 2009 13:52 (sixteen years ago)

he should have told MTV that when they interviewed him and spelled "yup" with three G's and three H's.

ringtone lizard (some dude), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 13:57 (sixteen years ago)

trey songz really has a signature ad-lib?

heave pho (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 18:27 (sixteen years ago)

it's not even really an ad lib, it's more of a throat-clearing sound effect like when jadakiss cackles

"lol :)" is super catchy, i don't really feel like i can resist it getting stuck in my head no matter what i actually think of the song

ringtone lizard (some dude), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 18:29 (sixteen years ago)

i mean for as "dumb" as it is, it's a good hook and a pretty smart song to make

heave pho (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 18:32 (sixteen years ago)

i feel like when you call a song "smart" what you really mean is pandering

ringtone lizard (some dude), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 19:01 (sixteen years ago)

sure, yeah, but i also mean that it's a song "about" twitter that's not all FOLLOW ME TWITTER TWEET TWEET or w/e that would make people just go "ugh" - instead it uses "twitpic" in a rhyme for a catchy chorus so in essence it's a good little song that feels a bit more "of the moment" and thusly will probably be more successful in the short term than it might have been otherwise

heave pho (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 19:06 (sixteen years ago)

also it's a good song i think because of that little part after he repeats "lol smiley face" - great melody there

heave pho (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 12 August 2009 19:18 (sixteen years ago)

if you're saying it's not quite as desperate as the Mistah F.A.B. song then yeah

and yeah that melody at the end of the chorus is definitely what makes the song

a being that goes on two legs and is ungrateful (dyao), Wednesday, 19 August 2009 08:52 (sixteen years ago)

i know complaining about soulja boy's rapping makes me a nas stan and all but man he really kinda ruins the song. simple dumb raps can be fun but just repeating the title 8 times, rhyming "blackberry" with "halle berry" and then splitting is just annoying.

some dude, Wednesday, 19 August 2009 13:24 (sixteen years ago)

the worst part about that verse is claiming that Halle Berry is thick

some dude, Thursday, 23 September 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

good for my mans

J0rdan S., Thursday, 23 September 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)

that's just about as much as katy perry has done in three weeks right?

surfboard dudes get wiped out, totally, Thursday, 23 September 2010 16:44 (fifteen years ago)

two months pass...

my mans doesn't do earnest very well.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:02 (fifteen years ago)

all the songs featured in this poll are so fucking bad

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:06 (fifteen years ago)

idk rev i fuck w/ "can't be friends"

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

that was exactly the song that made me say that

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:07 (fifteen years ago)

it sounds like some classic mario winans ish to me

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

i p much hate mario winans tho

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:08 (fifteen years ago)

What do you dudes think of "Blind" though.

Tim F, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:09 (fifteen years ago)

my mans is seriously so boring & oftentimes so aggressively anonymous that i have a hard time saying that he does a certain type of song well -- i think material makes or fails him, not the other way around

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:09 (fifteen years ago)

otm

don't know "blind"

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:10 (fifteen years ago)

It's pretty fucking earnest.

Tim F, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:16 (fifteen years ago)

the best trax on his album are the earnest ones

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:18 (fifteen years ago)

ok one of those earnest songs has him mimicking a doorbell but w/v

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:19 (fifteen years ago)

i still don't think i could ever bring myself to listen to a trey songz album

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:19 (fifteen years ago)

neither did i, before i actually listened to this one. it's worth it!

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:20 (fifteen years ago)

i like as much earnest stuff (i need a girl, can't help but wait, can't be friends) as i do jokey stuff (bottoms up/say ahh, i invented sex, neighbors know my name)

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:21 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah, "can't help but wait" is good. forgot about that one.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:21 (fifteen years ago)

i think it's hard to get through the whole thing in one sitting -- it's long and kinda monochromatic & i've had to force myself to go back & hear it in order for songs to start separating themselves in my mind

he's kind of an artist right now where i end up loving like pretty much every single, and you could cobble together a pretty dope 13 or 14 song album out of his last two albums combined, but neither of them are actually all that great, tho i think the last one is prob slightly better

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:22 (fifteen years ago)

oh i pretty much just listen to either the first third or, more often, the last third of the new trey - def a bit too much for one sitting. he sounds like he pushes himself a lot more not to sound generic when he's being earnest - re: his lighter stuff, i don't dislike songs like "say ahh", and if i ever heard them on the radio i'd probably be more fond of them, but they're not that special.

lex lex lex lex lex on the track BOW (lex pretend), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

everytime i hear "bottoms up" i feel like trey must have sheepfacedly went back to the lab after doing "say ahh" and been like "ok i probably could have been a bit less obvious about ripping off 'blame it'"

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:25 (fifteen years ago)

hearing "say ahh" on the radio a bunch taught me to hate it. it reeallly doesn't hold up.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:27 (fifteen years ago)

i think my problem with "can't be friends" is he's being a sleeze and trying to pass himself off as sympathetic. like...i have no problems with r&b dudes being sleezy as long as they kind of own it? but when they try to have it both ways it triggers my gag reflex.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:30 (fifteen years ago)

ha i have not paid enough attention to the lyrics of that song tbh

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:33 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the last third of the recent album is very good

gimme schefter (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:34 (fifteen years ago)

i think my problem with "can't be friends" is he's being a sleeze and trying to pass himself off as sympathetic.

this strikes me as pretty real.

I think it's a great album.

Tim F, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 10:35 (fifteen years ago)

i like the new album pretty well

lotta diamonds ... but prolly more display names (deej), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 15:55 (fifteen years ago)

"Can't Help But Wait" is great because Trey is the 2nd hammiest vocalist in R&B after Beyonce and it taps into that while still utilizing his young man swag -- the intro with the pew pew pew lazer gun noises and deadpan "check it out" leading right into those verses full of over-the-top vibrato and the ridiculous emphasis of lines like "you're worth MUCH MORE THAN THE OCCASIONAL I LOVE YOU!!!!!" that tension is missing from "Can't Be Friends," which is just pure pork.

some dude, Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:07 (fifteen years ago)

ha i remember the first time i saw trey songz it was in the video for scarface "girl you know" and my first thought was like man that dude needs to get punched in his stupid smug face reaaaally hard....my second thought was goddamn scarface has gotten fat as hell.

EIEIoOoOO (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 7 December 2010 16:17 (fifteen years ago)

I did, and it is indeed really awesome.

"Goon Sex" wasn't quite as good as the title promised, but "Sex Dance" is precisely as good as its title.

MAKING LOOOOOVEEEE FECES

dayo, Thursday, 24 March 2011 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

"love faces" is such a creepy ass song

wavy g. wavegarten (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 March 2011 01:16 (fifteen years ago)

it has a great melody & he sing it well but the lyrics are an absolute mess

wavy g. wavegarten (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 March 2011 01:17 (fifteen years ago)

he sing it annoyingly imo

some dude, Thursday, 24 March 2011 01:25 (fifteen years ago)

i dare you to listen to it and not think he's singing 'making love feces'

esp when she dirties up the sheets

dayo, Thursday, 24 March 2011 01:28 (fifteen years ago)

"don't it feel good when i touch on it" has weird sexual predator connotations to me

wavy g. wavegarten (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 March 2011 01:29 (fifteen years ago)

hahahahaha

i usually think of his ridiculous stupid vibrato as turning vowel sounds into R's "makin LRRRV FRRRRRCES"

xpost

some dude, Thursday, 24 March 2011 01:30 (fifteen years ago)

The Weeknd thread is reminding me how great the Anticipation mixtape is, but I actually prefer the showboating, Apollo-rocking Trey Songz of Passion Pain and Pleasure over Anticipation's eerie, man-in-space act.

My favorite song on the album is probably its most over-the-top. I love how it cycles through so many conflicting moods and emotions yet brings them all to this great resolution:

"heart attack" is still the jam

le goon (J0rdan S.), Monday, 3 February 2014 21:29 (twelve years ago)

it got a little tired for me by the end of the year it was on the radio. good song though.

2005: "Girl Tonite" (Twista feat. Trey Songz) 0

This is a good song even tho MM is just singing Ready For The World. Dunno why I never repped for it earlier.

raggett neds of your summer dress (The Reverend), Tuesday, 4 February 2014 05:13 (twelve years ago)

it was such a weird witless "Slow Jamz" retread but yeah not unpleasant per se.

the new Trey single where he sings "Fu-Gee-La" over a DJ Mustard beat, though, fuck that forever.

scott c-word (some dude), Tuesday, 4 February 2014 12:06 (twelve years ago)

Ugh, I didn't realize that was Trey Songz. I still love this guy and I'm rooting for him to come back with something good, but man, his inability to resist low-hanging fruit

Evan R, Tuesday, 4 February 2014 14:12 (twelve years ago)

you say that as if it's actually as big as "Bottoms Up," though. he's never going to have a top 10 hit again.

If Robin Thicke and Jason Derulo can do it, I wouldn't count Trey Songz out.

It doesn't even feel as big as "Heart Attack" or "Two Reasons"

curmudgeon, Monday, 5 May 2014 20:33 (twelve years ago)

I know I'm preaching to an empty room here, but I'm liking most everything I'm hearing from the upcoming album. July 1 release date; a few new songs out today:

http://karencivil.com/new-music-trey-songz-foreign-and-change-your-mind/

This one's still my fav:

https://soundcloud.com/spinzhoodrich/trey-songz-ft-jeezy-ordinary

I bet the album will be good.

Evan R, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 15:53 (twelve years ago)

he could have a pretty strong Greatest Hits collection at this point but i can't imagine getting hyped for a Trey album. the last one was trash outside the singles.

some dude, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:12 (twelve years ago)

yeah i didn't like the last one at all

his sound isn't interesting to me at all, i find his albums to be weirdly greyscale. got good singles sometimes of course.

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:17 (twelve years ago)

Passion, Pain & Pleasure is a back to back classic in my book; that one never lets up. I have no idea how he went so wrong with Chapter V, though. Terrible album.

Evan R, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:22 (twelve years ago)

trey songz doesn't strike me as one of the r&b dudes most concerned with creative control, his label probably just thought he'd reached the limit of his market potential and didn't give him the best songs

een, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:30 (twelve years ago)

looking back at PPP... i wonder if trey is the only artist to have a drake feature on a song not produced by 40 and a 40 song that doesn't have a drake feature on the same album

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:36 (twelve years ago)

i get the opposite impression, i think he has a hand in the writing of most if not all of his songs and has a very strong sense of his sound and his 'brand,' whether i always like the results of not. xp

some dude, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:37 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I think Al's right. If you look at PP&P, he was the primary writing credit on nearly every song, which is probably why that was such a coherent, vaguely classicist R&B album. On Chapter V, he has almost exclusively secondary writing credits. That's probably why that album is such a scattered mess; there was almost certainly some label meddling going on there

Evan R, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:42 (twelve years ago)

Like a lot of R&B singers, it doesn't take much for Songz to come across as a sleazeball, a cornball or an asshole. Chapter V really didn't have a good sense of where those boundaries were.

Evan R, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:45 (twelve years ago)

that album had TWO songs built around football metaphors. the Ty Dolla $ign-written "Fumble" was just the worst.

some dude, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:45 (twelve years ago)

"heart attack" is his best single though (either that or "can't help but wait" imo)

le goon (J0rdan S.), Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:50 (twelve years ago)

"Heart Attack" is all time. Plus it's my fiance's favorite Trey Songz single; she's been talking about doing it at karaoke for ages.

Evan R, Tuesday, 13 May 2014 16:56 (twelve years ago)

Wouldn't be doing my duty if i didn't note that the new album is really, really good. A lot zippier and more club-minded than the last couple of albums, and save for a track or two it doesn't leave the sour aftertaste that other male-fronted Mustard&B does. And the Nicki track is going to be a great single

saw this mention of Trey in a Washington Post article on a great funky North Carolina family group called Brass Connection who have moved to DC and have been playing street corners:

Their first hot spot was Dupont Circle. It was there, they say, that R&B singer Trey Songz hopped out of a limo to listen. The crowd went wild. He put $500 in their bucket.

Evan R, Friday, 21 April 2017 19:22 (nine years ago)

do you like that song, Evan?

flopson, Friday, 21 April 2017 20:25 (nine years ago)

Yeah it's sweet and breezy, though as a lead single it's kinda underwhelming. I know this board/people in general rip on A&R interference, but I'm kinda shocked his label let him release this album. So much B material, and it kills whatever commercial momentum the guy had

Evan R, Friday, 21 April 2017 20:35 (nine years ago)

I guess I'd rather hear the guy make a very low key R&B album than go full Derulo but still
