Christina Aguilera - Bionic

Am I the only one who's excited for the new Xtina Aguilera album? Back to Basics was a bit self-indulgent at parts, but I think the 1st disc is a certified classic and the second disc has some great moments ("Save Me From Myself" is one of her best songs, easily). Anyway the new album sounds really interesting, here's the confirmed list of people she's working with:

Sia
Ladytron
Tricky Stewart
Le Tigre (!!!!!!!!!)
Claude Kelly
Focus
Linda Perry
DJ Premier
Goldfrapp

We should be hearing a first single within the next month or so.

i'm actually really excited

Monday Nite Tranny Party (The Brainwasher), Monday, 8 June 2009 18:31 (sixteen years ago)

I'd be more psyched if she did something with Switch

i'm going to choose to believe this is the 70s rock band

wow totally - did you ever hear the switch remix of that p diddy/xtina joint? 'tell me'? IMMENSE

i'm excited to hear this but also fully aware that it could go either way. back to basics only had a handful of cuts which are worthwhile (though those ones are VERY worthwhile) and 'keeps getting better' was rubbish.

lex pretend, Monday, 8 June 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

Yeah "Keeps Getting Better" was embarassing... I wish she would stop working with Linda Perry, she's a total hack.

Monday Nite Tranny Party (The Brainwasher), Monday, 8 June 2009 18:35 (sixteen years ago)

and yeah Switch would be really interesting!

Monday Nite Tranny Party (The Brainwasher), Monday, 8 June 2009 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

did she ever do stuff w/premier besides ain't no other man? that was classic

i would never want a book's autograph (M@tt He1ges0n), Monday, 8 June 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

also, there's rumors that she's covering Ladyhawke's "My Delirium" for the album.

Monday Nite Tranny Party (The Brainwasher), Monday, 8 June 2009 18:37 (sixteen years ago)

yeah Primo produced most of the first disc of Back to Basics.

something very amniotic about those clips. makes me think it is xtina. why would goldfrapp be doing this at the same time that their proper, and v different, album campaign has just kicked off?

III. The video names.

This was the one that sealed the deal for me: If you add up all of the numbers before a decimal and attach a letter to its corresponding number (A=1, B=2, C=3, etc.) you’ll notice that each video has a distinct message:

Prelude 699130082.451322 = (38.17) = (CH.AG) = CH. AG.
9.1.13.669321018 = I. A. M. CH.
9.20.19.13.5.723378 = I.T.S.M.E.C.

dude you've now used 'dinner party music' and 'coffee table music' as disses within the last few days, are you playing criticism cliché bingo???

these videos and images aren't *that* weird imo, also you'd think they'd up the weirdness of the viral stuff over the final product....

nobody else would do a huge viral campaign like this

disagree!

Cunga, Thursday, 28 January 2010 02:53 (fifteen years ago)

yeah the first artists who sprung to mind were lady gaga and fever ray (as dan compared this to upthread)...

anyway the obvious reason i thought it was xtina, which seems to have been pretty much proved now, is that she's at exactly the right stage of the promo cycle - lady gaga's just released an album, the knife and goldfrapp have just kicked off promo campaigns for v different works, xtina has a new album just around the corner that we haven't heard anything about yet, apart from these virals. it pretty much has to be someone decently well known with an album release date close enough that people know about it...

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 08:22 (fifteen years ago)

It does occur to me that a lot of this imagery would also be in line with Tomorrow, in a year; currently listening to that STREAMING IN ITS ENTIRETY ON THE KNIFE WEBSITE to see if it matches the music in these viral videos.

its funny tho how christina has always seemed like britney + time lag and i always felt like britney stumbled upon her great moments in this haphazard and lol chaotic way but christina always feels like shes desperately trying to shape a career, and while i do think this looks awesome, if its her "blackout" its pretty funny that britney fell flat on her face into a psychotically brilliant album basically by being too drunk and fucked up to do anything else and christina seems to desperately have to construct this career sinking artistic album. you know. if it is her. and its good. and weird. manny farber etc.

"you lost me" is great - on one listen this album seemed like a bit of a mess, and most of the uptempo tracks horribly dated, but it has a few good moments, mostly the ballads and "woohoo".

Predictably, I like the ones with the collaborators I already like - Elastic Love, My Girls, the Sia ballads and the Ladytron goth-trance one. I sense there was a massive boardroom freakout about thus stuff, hence the shit that sounds like cookie-cutter Pussycat Dolls pop. A lot of the bonus tracks should have replaced humdrum safe bets on the main disc.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Friday, 28 May 2010 16:01 (fifteen years ago)

"elastic love" and "sex for breakfast" are the keepers off of this one for me... overall I'm pretty disappointed but I'll give it a few more listens

yeah and "you lost me" of course

The Brainwasher, Friday, 28 May 2010 16:23 (fifteen years ago)

Sex for Breakfast? Really? Pure Flight of the Conchords.

Haunted Clocks For Sale (Dorianlynskey), Friday, 28 May 2010 16:37 (fifteen years ago)

sex for breakfast is ok. i would consider not skipping it if it came on shuffle. most of the material on this album is unfortunately very weak. i feel like her performance of "you lost me" on idol might as well have been a speech to 'the general public' re: the fate of her career for the next few years because there is very little chance this album is going to have even one successful single. "woohoo" is its only shot and that move doesn't seem particularly fruitful thus far.

teledyldonix, Friday, 28 May 2010 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

well "sex for breakfast" reminds me of "loving me 4 me" which is my favorite xtina song, that's why I named it

i fake it so real, i am beyonce (surm), Friday, 28 May 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

that's always been the issue with xtina though, she doesn't really have her own musical identity

The Brainwasher, Friday, 28 May 2010 17:35 (fifteen years ago)

insomuch as that is a "problem", I mean I guess her great voice is the 'constant' throughout all of her stylistic shifts

The Brainwasher, Friday, 28 May 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)

wasn't as much of a problem until these last 2 albums. and her voice is "great" but it can get annoying, or grating. i love her high register though.

i fake it so real, i am beyonce (surm), Friday, 28 May 2010 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

like, "back to basics" and this just seem to be so obviously coveting somebody else's steez, that it's just kind of odd.

i fake it so real, i am beyonce (surm), Friday, 28 May 2010 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

i would say "stripped" was very much christina.

i fake it so real, i am beyonce (surm), Friday, 28 May 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

not bad. i still feel like she's experimenting with other ppl's styles tho.

she made this into a real strength on stripped, i think - the mastery of a different distinct, contemporary style for each single felt like a real statement of intent, and enabled her to do some really interesting image-shifting stuff too. and the styles were subordinate to her own charisma, whereas here it mostly feels like she's trying to be other people as well as cop their styles.

i agree, i was pretty shocked. like, most of the non-bonus tracks are unlistenable and don't even deserve to be on the album at all. that one is actually really good. i don't know who in their right mind decided to make it a bonus track as if it were an afterthought.

teledyldonix, Wednesday, 9 June 2010 01:49 (fifteen years ago)

I discovered this album last year, and thought it’s so great… yes, kind of corny at points, but in a way that’s fun/enjoyable to me. I didn’t know any of the Discourse around it from the time (Perez Hilton and all that), so it was cool just to get into the album without any of the baggage. (I’ve never been a Christina fan, and tried listening to all her other stuff after this, but it’s the only one that really hits for me.)

why the fuck was this amazing piece of new wave disco relegated to bonus track status???

Yep, this is the track I heard (playing at Target) which inspired me to check out the album… “Monday Morning,” it’s a brilliant song!
